I am making a file using file maker, and No text from the layout screen carries over to the Browse field, and in layout I have to move the buttons and fields around a bit to make the text display. It seems like a horrible bug which is making this program useless in my eyes, How can I make a file with no text on the layout? Please tell me what I'm doing wrong! -Frustrated FM7 User

I sell small ads in weekly newspapers in the Southeast US, and I need to generate a report (invoice) for each newspaper showing how many ads each advertiser ran during each week of the month. I have a file that includes five fields: Newspaper Name, Date, Advertiser Name, Number of Ads, Cost of ads. Each time an ad runs, I create a new record. (Newspaper Name is a lookup from the related 'Newspaper Contacts' file.) I created global fields (fDate1), (fDate2), (fDate3), (fDate4), (fDate5) to hold the date of each week, and I created a calculation field that compares 'Date' to "fDate1' and returns 'Number of Ads' when they match. I'm a new to this forum. Would you help me on this? I am working on a database of research articles that has multiple search options (1 drop-down selection and 3 text input boxes for "author", "title", "keywords", etc). Problem is...when I click "Search" button without entering any input, entire records return. With no input, user is supposed to get the error page. Any idea? Thanks a lot!!

I am using Filemaker for a member database. I am looking to create a member directory in Quark. Last year, I exported the records as tab-separated text. I then went into Quark and hit return a lot (there are 10,000 records) and then went through and bolded cerrtain lines and italicized others. Its just a normal database, but the end product needs to be in this format: <b>Company Name</b> Person's name Address L1 Address L2 Phone Fax Home <i>Notes</i> Is there an easier way to accomplish this? Hello, We are having a problem with an eight file solution. It is hosted on a Mac (OS 9) running FMP Server 5.5. Users range from W2K, 98, Mac OS9 & Mac OSX. We suspect that we have one or more corrupt files. There is some strange behavior with some relationships (lost) and value lists (show up on OS9, don't show up on OSX, etc.). I have a bunch of questions, if you will indulge me. How can we figure out which file is corrupt? We have already re-built the largest from scratch. Ok, so I do my Print Setup ... then I create my print script ... but it won't go back to the printer I've set for a specific print script! AGH. It just keeps the one that's currently active. For example: I have a brother printer select ... I run my print script and it uses the brother printer. I have a PDF driver selected ... run my print script and it uses the PDF driver! I'm trying to automate a script importing a daily delimited file but fmpro 7 keeps giving me an error when i specify the file and folder location. ie... filewin:/S:/*.sos I'd even live without specifying the extension if it would automatically take me to the appropriate folder and pick a wildcard "all files" view? Any suggestions on what i might try or am doing wrong?

Hi, I am new to this, and fairly new to FileMaker. I am using FM Pro 7 and am haveing trouble importing a database with multiple tables that are related. When I import, it is ONLY importing one table. In the docs it says to have the layout you want imported (the other table in this case) selected when you want to import that other table. All of this is coming from the exact same database, except it is a clone of the main database (used for data entry purposes, no chance of messing up the main database - data integrity). Hi, I'm looking for some advice pertaining to a PDF document storage database I'm trying to make. I'd like to be able to write a script whereby a reference to a PDF file would be placed in a container so that it could be viewed in filemaker and then the user could double click the file or something and cause that same file to open in Adobe Acrobat. Once I have that working, I want to add various text fields to tie this into my current customer service database so that I can scan all my paper invoices and contracts for each customer and relate them to the customers other records. Hello, Here is the question. I would like to do a report that lists all the products for a certain year, but I want the report to do subs on a certain field and I want to change that field value in a script. Example - You have a database of all cars from 2000-2004 and you have a field for color. Your database is populated with color as white only, but there may be 6 different colors you want to report on. Like first I would like to list all 2004's with white in order of name and then list all the same cars with blue and then red and so forth on the same report. I have a solution that I'm trying to work out the security. What I am attempting to do is users will have on their desktops a filemaker 7 file that will open the solution files from the server. Since I have multiple users, I would like to impose the security of the users only have the ability of viewing the records they have created. If they did not create the record then the records can't be seen at all to the point that if they do a show all, only records that they have created will be shown. I would like to lock some records so that they can not be edited by user but only by admin. I would like to use hypertext functionality for going to other layouts rather than the buttons. I just don't like a lot of buttons and I think they look clunky if used in excess. I can "debutton" the button function so that it doesn't look like a button, by making the background of the button clear and setting the pen size of the button edges to none. I can also change the font to a different color (e.g. blue) and underlined. If I could give this a "mouse-over" effect so that my curson changes from an arrow (or any other effect to show the user that it is "hot"/hypertext) to say a hand when it goes over the "hot-spot" it would be complete. Hello! In my old FM5 I used Troi-dialogbox plugin which make it possible do calculated text and valuelists dropdown inputs, and the useful barberpoole. Do anyone know if its possible in FM7? The attached FM7 db demonstrates two failed approaches at something that is probably quite simple to someone more skillful and/or less sleepy than I am. I would be so grateful if someone could publicly humiliate me with a beautifully simple solution! The idea is simple: I want a pop-up list to control the contents of a portal. I'm new and found this forum. It's been a great help these last few months but now I need help. Let me tell you what I need done and I'm hoping someone will walk me through creating a script file. I work for a security company. When our officers call in for a case number, our dispatchers enter the info into the database. Then issue a number to them like 04567. The problem is that when they start, they check the database for the last used number and then just remember the next number when ready to issue it. Hi. I administer a MS Access database at my place of work. I really wanted to give FMP a good shot (for many reasons... I'm an apple user, I like how FMP handles all multimedia files, accounts/privledges setup, etc.). So I went out and purchased Dev 7 (with my own money... $500, now that's dedication to apple!). I created a file with two databases: one is the fill out form and the other ons is a control panel with buttons to switch layout, print,... Local all works fine! Now i placed it in the hosts on the server. The two docs open... New to V6 and enjoying the ease of Table View for some situations. But it seems to not recognise sub-summary fields - that is they don't show in Preview. Is this the case? That means it's either re-sizable and movable columns and no sub-summaries - or sub-summaries in a list without the joys of movable columns. I have FM Server running on a OSX box. I have FM Unlimited running on a PC that serves up some of the files from the FM Server. FM Server is set to automatically backup the files each night at 10:00. When it does this the PC unlimited access is paused while the backup occurs. It seems that occassionaly after the backup is complete something happens and the PC unlimited does not come back online. When I come in in the morning I have to go and quit Unlimited on the PC and then relaunch it. Is there anyway to stop this from happening? I guess the easiest way would to find a way to automate FM Unlimited on the PC to quit at 9:59 PM and then to automatically relaunc…

I have a bound solution that works fine using Developer 5.5 and installing via Inno Setup. I converted the files to fp7 and bound the solution in Developer 7. It runs fine when launched from the folder where it was bound. However, when I compile it with Inno the installation doesn't launch. Same same with WinZip and Winrar. I get a spinning cursor for about 3 seconds and then nothing. I notice the USR files after binding still say Filemaker 5.5. What am I missing? Thanks!

Hi again! I'm trying hard to get a report to work - but I can't figure out a simple (?) counting problem using subsummary fields. It's hard to explain here but the example file illustrates my problem and I hope someone could look at it and if possible tell me how to make it work! I'll explain the attached file. HI gang, I have a question. I used an online DB that retuned about 1200 results, in an HTML table. I am trying to ultimately get this information into a FM database. To do this, I copied all the info, and pasted it into Excel. Everything looks great. The first colum (or field) is a hypertext link to more information specific to the result. When I paste the info into Excel, it retains this hypertext link. When I click on the link in Excel, it launches my browser and displays the info. Hi all, I am trying to set-up a multi-warehouse inventory system. I haven't used Filemaker in ages and am well rusty. I have a file with 3 tables - 1)Warehouse Master 2) Item Master and 3)Item/Location 1 and 2 are self-explanatory, 3 will hold the inventory balance of each Item in each Warehouse. My problem is that I do not want to allow non-unique records based on both Warehouse code and Item code. Can a script be initiated to close a host file while logged in from another box as a remote user. In order to make updates to a host pc i have to log in from a secondary machine but until the file is closed i cannot replace the file. Hope i explained that well. My scripting so far closes the files on remote but not the host. Can't figure out how to initiate it on the host though? Jared

Filemaker still requires you to link layouts to tables to access them. Example: Set Field( Table1::field, Table2::field) will always copy a blank value regardless of the field's content. Separation of data and design with a query language will always put Filemaker in a class with a standard spreadsheet program. I use Filemaker everyday to create elaborate SQL based front ends which make up for the endless relational deficiencies of Filemaker. Filemaker is a great program if used for what it can do. Calling it a relational database is just wrong.

Newbie Question #2: In Layout mode, if I click and drag a field it takes FM a long time to redraw the object making rearranging objects very tedious. I've seen other posts bemoaning this very slow screen refresh "feature". I can reproduce this effect in a brand new 1 table file with 1 field. HOWEVER, when I create a database from a "FileMaker Template" (e.g. Contact Management)... In Layout mode, the field objects are refreshed with incredible speed when they are moved. I'm having a problem with one of my loops breaking, I've had no problems with the type of loop in FM6 (re-writing in FM7), I wondered if there was something I needed to do special in FM7. Basically what is happening: Script 1: - takes a found record set and loops through them. For each record it is supposed to search in one of two files to see if there is a similar record (two different scripts triggered by if/else statement). If I don't include the two scripts the records will properly loop through, so something in them (both of them, actually) is keeping the loop from going to the next record, so I've ruled out that they aren't properly sorted... Hi there experts, I had a FM Server network with a G4 server (1.2g RAM) - FM Server - OS 9 and Around 15 FM clients running FMP 5.5 - OS 9 & OS X This was working fine for a couple of years. Only I need to put the FM Server app in foreground in the G4 server. Today I have upgraded the G4 to OS X latest version and re-installed FM Server 5.5 v4. Now when I start the FM application it runs normal for the first 2 or 3 clients. When I start the 4th client, all the clients go terribly slow. It is really annoying. I've been having some problems with some of my more complex scripts, and I've narrowed it down to problems with GTRR (goto related records). Apparently I can't even seen to pull off simple gtrr scripts. For instance: Two tables, "gps_assessment" and "significant_others". Hi all, First time post here, so be gentle... I am currently writing a database which involves the use of multiple layouts. As part of the requisite for the database I require users to be able to move back and forward through each layout as though it were a web page (back and forward buttons on each layout for example). I work in a garment production company and I need some help on what I am trying to create: I have 4 files with the same product ID#. File 1: -product id # -fabric code ... I am quite new at using filemaker and I don't think that my question should prove to be very hard for someone somewhat more advanced then me. I'll try my best to explain. I have the Dutch version of filemaker so I'm losely translating its teminology. I have created a few users (passwords)and for one of them I have restricted his field altering ability. One (DB A) contains a mailing list (addresses, names, etc), the second (DB : is a list of mailings (mailing type, date, number of pieces, description, etc). They are related, and matched by a serial number field in the mailings database (each mailing gets its own serial number), which is related to a repeating field in DB A (called Mailing ID Nos). Mailings do not necessarily go to each record in DB A. Ok folks - I'm ready to throw my Apple 23" cinema display and dual G5 out the window this problem is so frustrating. A week ago our FileMaker Pro server (Win 2k server) crashed. The boot.ini file was missing and we thought the issue was only a hardware problem. All the hardware problems have been fixed though, the drives reformatted (FM databases were transferred to a network drive & an external hd for safekeeping during this work), the OS installed again from scratch. I am a total newbie to filemaker. I have set up a template to enter data and that went pretty well. I am stuck on one thing though. I have two date entries. (dd/mm/yyyy) and I want to automatically calculate the difference between them in weeks, ie 01/01/2004 to 02/01/2004 = 4 weeks. how do I do this? I set up what I thought was a calculation (date1-date2=) but that just gave me jibberish. any help is greatly appreciated.

I have tried using the Data Merge Manager in Word X for Mac to merge fields from FM7. In the Choose a File window the FM7 files remained dim. The same procedure worked if I used an old FM3 file. Is this a FM7 problem or a Word version not updated for FM7? I am using Word 10.0.0 Any help is appreciated.

using 7.02 on 10.3.4 There is still some kind of sliding bug. Yes, fields slide properly, and big variable-length fields or portals that span over into a second page if large do shrink correctly into one page if they are small... the bug is that lots of blank pages are printed, even if all the fields of every record fit onto one page after sliding! Identical records and databases in Filemaker 6 do not do this; they slide exactly the same but don't randomly print blank pages all the time. This is a reproducible bug. Hi All, I have an actor's auditions database that I would like to display a running total of auditions for a given actor. This needs to be in the regular list view and not as a grand summary part, report or portal. It also needs to be global, not just for the found set. The current list view simply has the actor's name, audition date, location and type. I'd like one more field at the end of this row that shows how many total auditions that actor has. Just the total number of records with a given actor's full name, but I don't know if I need a self join or a get function of some kind. Thanks in advance, this forum has been a lifesaver for me.

Hello! Am developing a contracting system for an entertainment agency. I need to accomodate 2 scenarios: 1) Generate a contract for both client and single performer for an event, (already have this part done using a one page form containing all information on both client and artist), and; 2) Generate a contract for client and multiple performers for same event - to put it another way, I need to generate a set of subcontracts tied to one master client contract; Am not a true "newbie" per se, however, my FM skills are a little rusty! Hi folks, I'm trying to help a friend move a Filemaker 5 file from an old computer running Windows 98 SE to a new computer running Windows XP. The problem is, any attempt to move or copy the Filemaker file on the old machine results in an instant Blue Screen O'Death. Scandisk on the old computer doesn't find any problems, and Filemaker 5 is able to read and write to the file without apparent problem. Filemaker 5 cannot, however, save a copy of the file, as attempts to do so cause Filemaker 5 to crash. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Sorry if this has already been posted but i couldn't find a solution. We recently ported our company databases from Server 3 (running on a Mac OS 8.6) to Server 5.5 and our clients machines from FM Pro 4.1 to FM Pro 6. It has been working fine for about a month with 10-15 users, but a few days ago we started to notice drastic slow downs on accounting databases (with lots of calculations). I've heard that server 7 deals with this by doing calculations on the server side but does anyone know a temporary fix for server 6. Could I purge something on the server? Very obvious bug this one. I have a report including a portal; each line on the portal contains fields from a related record. Let's say there are 9 related records, FileMaker 7 always prints a blank line at the end of the portal - ie 10 lines all up! Exactly the same code in FileMaker 6 resulted in only 9 lines being printed. Any workaround / confirmation? Thanks - chris.

I have an application in which I'd like to hide the status area, using my own on-screen buttons for all user interaction. The problem is that this application has a report in which each record prints to more than one page - and I'd like the users to be able to preview this, and navigate from record to record and page to page, *without* needing access to the 'status' area. It seems like in preview mode it is impossible to have any active buttons. Scrolling the scroll bar moves between records, and not between pages; I have to click on the little page icons in the status bar to do this. i have a system set up with about 100 users. There is a pop up list that can be viewed fully on some machines and gets cut in half on other machines. So, some users can view all of the data and others cannot see the whole name. IE in a company database this looks like this Johnson, James if viewed correctly. some users see Johso If you have 30 Johnsons this becomes difficult. Is this a windows problem, filemaker problem? Hi, I have a database set-up for web access. When I view any of the layouts in a web browser I notice that the scroll bar on the bottom (horizontal) allows the viewer to scroll to the right a whole bunch even though there isn't any text on that side of the layout. I am working with a set of FMPro files I created to generate reports from data exported from another program. I don't have any ability to control the format of data exported from the other program. The problem is, all my dates are importing as 19XX. Oddly, when I open up the text files in Excel, it formats the dates correctly. I KNOW Excel is not a smarter program than FileMaker. I have looked at all my date fields in all the files and cannot figure out what I am overlooking. Any suggestion?

I have a look up happening between two databases that is troublesome. When I create a new record, the look-up doesn't happen. If I move on, define fields or something (haven't found trigger) and come back, the values are then populated. I have other look-ups happening using different relationships that work fine. Anyone have any ideas why these won't happen. BTW the relationship is an indexed calculation with a value of 1 between both databases. Like the cartesian X value between relationships.

Hi all I'm trying to understand the way some templates of FMP 7 work, e.g. "Resource Scheduling.fp7" or "Task Management.fp7". In these files, I see in almost every table, a field named "one", calculated, value = 1 and also relations based on that field. I understand that it always, in every row of every table that contains it, it equal to 1. Can anybody explain what is this field? So I'm relatively new to this forum, but I can't find an explanation of a problem I'm receiving anywhere, so I thought I'd ask the question in here. Currently, our system is running FM server 5 and hosting a number of files (~70). The client-side computers are running Filemaker v5.5, one running v6. Hello, I have a problem of import data from another table in same file. I have a script to import data from Table B to Table A, I used filemaker network path "fmnet:/192.168.1.11/testfile", because this is a sharing database. However, when remote user run this script, their FM7 crash and quit. Only host can run this script with no problem. Is it a FM bug or I used a wrong file path? Please help! Damon

Ok, this is the same database i posted about before. It is something for me to keep easy track of the PCs (and other related equipment) in my office so that i know which ones are next on the upgrade cycle. I basically have a table that lists all the different pieces of equipment. Due to the fact that certain things like monitors and scanners will be attached to a particular PC, i made a relationship back to itself. Am currently producing an on-line searchable database using FMPro 4.1v2 and using FMP to serve the whole site. The server is a Mac (BW G3 350 runing OS 8.6). Users are able to search for a list of records by entering any one or more of three parameters. A fourth parameter is permanently set by being a hidden input on the search page. However if a search is made without putting in any user parameters the search returns all records which match the hidden parameter. Would I just be able to use FileMaker Pro Web companion to upload my files on purchased hosting space? I have not even touched the Web companion yet. I am trying to get background info on where to start. Does my hosting company need any kind of FileMaker server software to be able to host my database? Do I need to purchase FileMaker Pro Instant Web Publishing software or is this something that comes with FM Pro 5?
