FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

I have a fairly complex (24 interrelated files), bound solution distributed on both Macs and PCs in kiosk mode. One (and so far only one) PC implementation gets occasional, random 'Abnormal Program Terminations'. It's a Windows 98 application. The termination affects the files by destroying the font references assigned to displays. This customer is NOT happy. On two occasions the termination allowed me to get 'details'. In both cases the dll referenced was fmtools.dll. In addition to losing font assignments, one other symptom of the failure is corruption of the 'wallpaper' the user has assigned to his desktop. I'm using Filmaker Pro 4.03 to develop an order/invoicing/inventory system. I have all the files setup and it seems to be working just fine however now that we have nearly 300 records in the order file the other filemaker apps that connect to the host are terribly slow to bring up and update records. This is what I have going on. Our sales people enter orders in the orders file. The entry fields here are actually fields created in the invoice file and layed out using a portal. I have about 40 files, some of them are related while some not. Are there any way to clear ALL fields from ALL files? it's a pain to do it one by one...

I have a pasted jpeg file for each record. THEY WON'T PRINT!!! Everything else, including images placed in the layout will print fine. Is it possible to have information from a portal appear in a pop-up list in a field that is not in the portal? IE: A line item number from a portal being put in a field for an external cost so the external cost can be referenced to its associated product? Having line item numbers appear in a list is way more secure for data entry than transposing them or even drag and drop. Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Company is networked. Network protocol is Tcp/IP. The Layout pop-up menu is displayed in columns on some users and with one long column with a scroll on others. None are Mac, all PC and under either Windows NT, 2000, or 95. Cannot figure out how to get the layout pop-up menu in the status area to show in columns and not one long vertical column with a scroll. Help???

I've imported an old dbase (DOS) mailing list database into FM5. The file imports fine, but I have one field called "citystate" inherited from the original containing, as you might imagine, both the city and the state. Is there an automated way to separate this data? The FM5 Help menu or printed documentation don't appear to readily address this issue.

Is there a way to email directly from FM5? I am for some reason under that impression. I maintain a mailing list database and would like to be able to email new records to my fulfillment house to ship my product. Then, upon successful transmission, I'd like the new record's status to no longer be considered "new", thus paving the way for more "new" records. Thanks.

It was comforting to find the Development Standards by CoreSolutions www.coresolutions.om.ca . It's nice to have field naming coventions and such. It just makes the whole process feel more professional. I know there must be a good reason, but I've got a question about one of the standards. It states that, "No portal shall be formatted to allow the manual creation of related records- ie all related record creation shall be done via scipts whic are called by a button on or near the protal." When setting up a report with the layout assistant, is it possible to re-open the assistant to review all the settings.? It took a couple of tries to get a sort/ report working. Now I have to recreate it. I did not record all the wizard settings. I do not see all the settings in the pull-down menus.

I am creating a FMP DB that will contain 60,000+ reference only graphics. It would be a great time saver if the application preferences allowed the user to set "insert reference only" as the default. Since that is not the case, I am wondering whether there might be some area in the registery (Windows NT 4.0) that could be modified. Hi All, Can you have a second variable in a lookup? What I mean is this: One file ("Quote") showing records from another file ("Line Items") in a portal based on a "Quote Number". I want to have another file "Purchase Order" bring records from the related file (the one used for a portal in "Quote"), but I want to show only those records that have a certain "supplier nubmer" in them. Can you do someting along the lines of a sort and and then omit the other records? I can't figure it out for the life of me. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello all. I don't see how I can do this in my database, so I hope you can help. We have reports file. In this file, we have reports that are as short as 1 page, to as long as 14 pages. I have made a calc field that determines the number of pages used. However, if one of our users finds 15 records (reports) they need to print, it takes them a long time... They have to click to each record and print pages 1 to x, then go to the next record, and so on. Is it possible to script this process? I can't seem to find how to set the page values in the print window based on a value from the record being printed... I could then loop this, and they will have their 1 click - print …

I have several computers in an office and want to share/host a database via TCP/IP. When I go to document preferences and try to change it to multiuser, I get a FM message saying that the fiel couldn't be set to mulituer do to a network error. FMP5 will "convert" v3 files to v5, allowing you first to save the v3 file (renaming as desired), then to save the v5 file. As far as I can tell, the conversion won't change a thing. You can't "save back", so once a file is v5, it's v5 forever -- of course, you can export the data and import it into a v3 file. Yes, v3 and v5 can live together -- I've got ... well, actually I have v4 and v5, but it amounts to the same thing. HTH, Dan

Hi. I am setting up a database for sailboat rental to calculate time at a certain rate, with one field for culmative time for each sailboat. I had it set up in excel like this: DATE DAY FROM TO TIME USED CULMATIVE The culmative time being a calculating field that would calculate the whole time the boat was out for a certain period, say, a month. Transferring this out to filemaker has been a headache; I know I have to think "outside the box" but I'm having trouble with that field. FYG I used the time sheet template to start with and am changing field names within, deleting fields I don't need. Any help with the culmative field would be appreciated.

I just downloaded the Trial version because our company would like to make sure it can do what it wants before it is purchased. I went through the tutorial but I'm confused I guess because the tutorial did not relate to our business. What we need is really something basic and from what I can tell Filemaker pro will do this. I'm hoping someone can help me start from scratch if I tell you what our needs are. I've heard so many good things about this program but unfortunately the company will not invest unless it knows it can do the job.

Is there a way to print a layout from a main menu screen, even if it is not currently in view?

My database is set up with a main menu which leads to several seperate layouts for entry of different data. When I navigate from the main menu to a new layout, the previous data entered in the various fields is displayed. Is there a way to show blank fields in the layout every time I go to that view? Hi all, I'm hoping someone has a solution to what I'm trying to figure out: I have a portal list in one layout for products. In another layout, I have a portal list of the same products, only there is loads of information you can enter about each product (custom products) and the portal rows are very large. Because of the nature of our business, all this info on one product is necessary at time but not at others. This is why I created a simple list. My problem is this: Can you click on a button in a portal row and have FileMaker switch to another layout with that same portal in it and go to the row you clicked from in the other layout? A FM application I'm using/troubleshooting has a button that calls a script that adds a new record. A subscript runs as part of this script and creates 3 related records. When adding a new record, a FM warning pops up saying: "This field cannot be modified until RECORD NUMBER is given a valid value" I click ok, it comes up again. Three times total. Then the script dumps me in the right field in the right layout, like I was creating a new record. But there is no record number assigned. In the layout I designed for data entry, I set the field up for check boxes (as more than one type of equipment may be applicable). Hi... 'nother question. When I look at my database in Filemaker, it looks just like I want it to- in a table view, all the columns are on the screen, sized according to the contents. However, when I activate the Web Companion, and view the file thru Internet Explorer 5.5, the columns are all evenly spaced so that the table occupies probably 3 page widths so you have to scroll over to view everything. The message I get says "Unable to Install" and prompts me to search for my previous full version of filemaker pro or qualifying upgrade. When I browse into my Filemaker Pro 2.1 folder and click on the icon I get "Filemaker Pro is not a proper upgrade product." According to the documentation that came with the upgrade package, I should be able to upgrade if I'm running Filemaker Pro 2.1 v2 or higher. As a DB newbie, i will try to explain this, please do not flame me for newbie stupidities. At the office i am able to connect UD4 on my NT machine to a MS Access DB, while using a BEA server. Though i accomplished this today, i am already cooking up some JSP pages that allows me to update/delete records in the Access db and also perform login/logout functions. This is the problem. Quiz Database. I have one database that stores several different cateogories of questions. Once I find the subset of questions, I need to randomly pick a certain number of questions for a test. When I tried it, the randomly picked questions are from the whole database not just the subset(category) of questions. I am creating a project tracking system which has 3 time tracking files that relate to a master Projects file, based on departments. Data is entered through portals there and lives in each respective department file. In each TT file there are a few summary reports for time tracking which are sorted by month and year. Hi.. Need help- I'm 100% new to File Maker. I am building a database for my book collection. I have it set up nicely for what I want it to do, with one exception- how can I make it so that there is a link- button or other on the page that when clicked, it will open a new page, layout or whatever with a photograph on it? That way I can have a large photo of the book, signatures and all on a page that can be printed separate. Otherwise a photo on the same page will be too smalfor detail. Ideas? Jim

I have a text field in a filemaker db which I am using to store notes. The text extends beyond the frame boundaries and I use scrolling to access different parts of the document. Here is the difficulty. If I scroll to read a particular position, and then select another window- either a different filemaker window or another application window, then the pointer position automatically scrolls back to the top of the document. Is there a simpler way to "lock" a record from being modified other than going into the "validate by calculation" settings? I have one form where there is a field called allowedit which is either empty or contains "T". I would like for the user to not be able to alter any fields or portals if the allowedit field = T. I want to simulate an input box or a dialogue box for a user to input data into one field. To achieve this I duplicated my original layout, then proceed to draw the dialogue box over top of it, disabling all the fields underneath. However, I have a portal underneath, and when I click on the dialogue box, it highlights the portal row right through it. Is there any way I can disable it? Kim

Hi, I have insert a pdf file as an object into a container. (E.g. Define field as container. In the container, right click and select Insert Object-> Browse-> Select a pdf file). A pdf file icon is displayed in the container. Then in the asp file, I tried retrieving the pdf file, but failed. In the browser, it displayed as a pdf file icon. May I know what syntax to use in order to retrieve the pdf file? I use response.binarywrite to retrieve the record, but cannot work(E.g. response.binarywrite Recordset1("PDF").value).

One of my clients is running FM3 and FM3 Server (latest updates). We have opener files setup on all the client machines (all Macs) to automatically open all the necessary files from the server. Everything works fine until someone tries to use the opener file when the server is down. At that point, the opener script permanently loses the reference to the hosted file that it needs to open. Even after the server is back up again the opener script remains broken and must be re-edited to choose the file again. Has anyone found a way to make an opener script that won't self-destruct if the hosted file can't be found? Also, does this problem exist with FM5 and FM5 server?

On my PC I have several DB's with the master one maximising the display on open. This I would like to retain throughout but my other DB's need to be opened and retain their size and state. however this doesn't happen. does anyone know how I can retain the window size and shape?

I am new at Filemaker. I have FMP5 on a pc. When I enter a character for a pop-up list it goes to the correct character, but I figure when you pick the second character it should go to next second character match. It goes to another selection on the list with the first character match. Is this normal? I have a cfml webform. When users check a checkbox it updates the file properly. If they return to edit the record and uncheck a checkbox, the update will not take....any other updating takes (text fields, dropdowns, etc). Any ideas? Unlimited 5.02 Thanks

I have a database that has fields that use the Text Index option, with the max set to 7 repetitons for each field. Example: Field 1 = class name (each repetiton has different data) Field 2 = time (each repetiton has different data) Field 3 = teacher (each repetiton has different data) Each record is by student name. I would create a layout that would make this easier to use. I would like to have one layout that I could show all the student in that class for that teacher. No matter how hard I try I can not get this to work

Our setup: one database hosted on dedicated G4 runing FMPro Server 5, and seven workstation/clients (each with independent licenses of FM Pro 5). Every time we restart a workstation application the Page Setup defaults to 75% sizing. Each client can individually reset it to 100%, but once the application is "quit" and restarted, it reverts back to 75%. This is true of all the client workstations. Did not have this problem with older versions of FM Pro.

When using Global fields in a Multi-shared DB over the network, are Global fields unique to each session (client) running?. The idea is as follows; I would like one DB to accept the users ID number and hold this in a Global field, that way everytime they do a new time/material entry the user ID gets automatically stamped with the ID they entered into the Global field. This saves them entry their ID for each new entry. Hope this makes sense. Thanks

When I send emails, if the field containing the email address has a space at the beginning or end of the address it is ignored and not sent although the only way to discover this is to check sent items in my email package. I have 4 computers that need to access filemaker files over the internet through a proxy server. 3 of the computers are Windows 95 and 1 is W2K Pro. The proxy server is running Microsoft proxy 2.0. All 4 machines are set up the same. One of the W95 machines will not open a file. When I try to open the file, I click on Host, specify the IP number-- The squiggly line comes on for a second then goes away with no connection. What do I need to do to make the one work like the other 3? The version is Filemaker pro 5v3. Any help would be appreciated.

I opened the program on the computer(server) which keeps the file, and then run it on another computer(client) thr' the LAN. The connection and computers should be good enough to run any program, but now the running speed is extremely low. Are there any way to make it faster thr' the LAN? Please Help!! -jimi

I've got a Filemaker Pro 3 Server database of about 2000 records that's suddenly lost the ability to toggle between List and Form views. It works if you change the View setting, close down the database, and re-open it again, but you can't toggle in real-time. As this is co-incident with some problems searching in date fields, I'm guessing the database may be corrupted somehow, but my attempts at using the Recover feature haven't worked. When I launch FM Pro, it takes about a minute and a half to load. The first screen comes quickly, but the rest takes ages. Once it's all loaded then everything is fine, but it's so slooooow to start. Anyone any ideas? I'm on W98SE, 8oo mghz, 132 RAM.

I currently have my simple, but web enabled service database running with FMPro 4.1. I have also supported a Db in the maintenance department with Paradox 9. The HR department had me doing a few things with Access. With those experiences in mind, I find the options in the pull down menus and the screens available to be very sparse in FMPro. I have a flat application file that is related to itself based on a field (link) whose value is always "1". On the form layout view I have a portal with 20 rows on the left side and the individual record on the right half of the screen. I am trying to scroll through the list in the portal and click on a row and want the record on the right to go to that record. What is happening when I assign the portal field as a button with the goto related record script attached, the record on the right performs correctley but the portal jumps back to the first record and I want it to stay on the "selected/clicked on" record. IMHO, seperating database and program in different files causes less risk of data lost.. Would someone pls tell me what is the advantage of saving them in the same file as in FMP? -jimi

So these folks say they need information in "CSV format, pipe delimited". What the heck do these terms mean? And can FMP accommodate them?

I know that you can't modify calculation field. But, is there any other way of going around and modify the calculation fields?

I can't believe this is so difficult to find, so I hope I am just missing something obvious, though I've been searching web sites and news groups for hours. I have a simple "Price Book" database in FileMaker Pro 5 for Mac. One of the fields is a Text field with a "filename to a JPEG image". I simply want the browse screen to display the picture when a record appears (just like a web page would with <img src="mypic.jpg"> ). I can't seem to find anything to do this, INSERT PICTURE doesn't appear to let you specify a variable for the Filename. I'm having an awful time relating, and correlating the way that FileMaker Pro5.0, functions and it's terms compared to Access which is the Program I used for a database! Is it me or is it really minus some of the abilities of Access. I keep trying but, I am having an awful time understanding FileMaker Pros functions, and how they will work for me! If anybody knows both programs well, I could use help in a big way!

I am trying to Match 2 fields from one database to a portal in another. I can do one or the other with relationships, but can't get it so that both fields in the new database have to match in order for the portal to show the data. Example on my job ticket database I have one field that asks for client, in another field I have a request for Job #. I want the other database to display all the jobs for that client and that job number in a portal. Seems simple but I have not figured it out yet.

You could just add 91 days. It won't be quite correct but maybe good enough. The next_rev field is a calculation field where the calculation is: last_rev + 91 result is a date.

I have a Master menu FM file with buttons to link to other fm files. The script opens the 2nd fm file and closes the menu and has the same procedure to go back to the menu file. However the script doesnt always work and open the other file. What is the best way of linking a menu fm file to a number of different files and back. Cheers

Do you know what the estimated limit should be on the amount of fields in one database? Is 130 too many?

I would like to create a database that will allow me to see the records running from left to right and the fields within each record listed below it. Example: (printed) If you were to look at a sheet of legal paper you would see four records going across the paper from left to right. Below each of the four records you would see seven fields (days of week) listed below it. I would like to have two weeks worth of information on one sheet of paper and it's easier to run the information vertical and not horizontal. Can anyone help? -Thanks

Hopefully someone can help me. I'm trying to breakdown film scripts by the Actors and their Chrono days in the script. I have set up each scene # as an individual record with Scene #, Location, Chrono, Roles, as fields, but when I try to place more than one actor in the roles field via a portal FM creates another record of the scene with just one actor. What can I do? I also want another lay out for each actor displaying only the scenes he or she is in and then be able to makes notes about that scene.
