I will upgrading the 3.0 server to the latest filemaker server. I have a few basic questions: 1) Will the users be able to edit the data online (www)? 1.a) If they can edit the data online why will I need to purchase clients? 2) The databases I have created using filemaker 5.0 will they work with the latest server? 3) Can the data be viewed on-line? Thanks, Evan P.

I have tried to open files on our FileMaker 5 Server machine using the remote Server Administration tool. I can use the tool to close files, but when I try to open them, I receive an error saying "error occurred, unable to open file". I can go to the server and open the files directly. Any ideas why it won't let me open them remotely?

Well, here is the sad story. Some time ago my Predecessor(s) purchased two individual copies of FM Pro Server 3.0 for Windows NT. These cd's came in a bown shipping envelope containing a olny cd each. I assume that years ago there was documentation but it is lost now! Is there a way I could get the code associated with each so I could install it? I am willing to mail the cd's to the company for verification purposes. We lost several million dollars from our district budget and buying such software is just a dream. Please help. Evan Panagiotopoulos

Hi, Is it possible to run two filemaker server 5's on the same NT network without any conflicts. I need to have two servers containing the same databases (same database names) on each one. (Before you ask why?) I have two ordering systems, one in $NZ and the other in $OZ. Currently I am running server 3 for OZ and Server 5 for NZ and i want to upgrade server 3 to 5. =)

Version: FM 4.1v3 This has happened once before- and restarting the server solved the problem- What happened again is that all PC users would lose their connection to the database, and then were not able to see files listed under Hosts after restarting the PC. Brief description of setup: Main Site 1 is connected to remote Site 2 thru a T1 line.

Okay, first off -- for those of you looking for the fmserverd binary, it is here: FileMaker Server 5.5/FileMaker Server Config.app/Contents/Resources/fmserverd Now to my question -- I'm trying to set up FMP Server 5.5 to run as a non-admin user on Mac OS X 10.1. I can do so just fine from the command line while logged in as the non-admin user, but I need to create startup items in /System/Library/StartupItems and I'm having trouble executing the command I believe should look like this: sudo -u fmp /Applications/FileMaker Server 5.5/FileMaker Server Config.app/Contents/Resources/fmserverd -c fmserver.conf But when I run that, I get the error: Error opening log file: …

Hello people, I need a little help. Up to now, our small business have always used one database with FileMaker pro 5. Of course, some businesses grow, like ours, and now I have to make sure that all computers can access the database. I just want to know if the server version will let me share the same file simultaniously with all the other computers. If so, I presume that I will need filemaker pro 5 licenses on all the other nodes? Finally, can I have it (server) run on win98? Thanks for your time. ps. sorry for the obvious lack of grammar skills, I'm not english.

Not a question about Mac vs Windows, but instead which is the best Mac OS version to run FMP Server 5 from. I seem to remember someone recommending 8.6. Clients are running version 9.1 and 9.2. Also how far down does one strip the extensions. Do you disable even things like Qtime, etc. Would appreciate any comments and rational behind them. Thanks. gd

Hi, I need to run FMP client and server on the same computer - to host files using FM Server and access them using FM Client (this is for testing purposes, to test functionality before deploying everything on a LAN). The problem is that FM client doesn't see files hosted on FM Server. At all.. I tried Local host, and Specified host (was using 127.0.0.1). No success. Honestly, I'm a bit puzzled, because I never had such problems on LANs.. Any help or advices are greatly appreciated! I use FM Client and Server 5.5 for Mac OS X. I created a database that included both global text fields and regular text fields. I placed the database onto a FileMaker Server. As I enter data (records) into both of these fields everything appears to be entering properly. I then close the database. The next time I launch the database, from the server, the data from the global text fields has disappeared. The data in the regular text fields is still there. Any explanations?

Quick question. I am running a filemaker server which is remotely accessed by several other terminals. My question is, when a terminal access the server, is the application processed in the server first before being fed into the terminals or are the terminals the ones who process the data? The reason why I am asking this is because the terminal seems to be really slow in computing out the information. So I am trying to identify whether it's the server issue or just the terminal being slow? Thanks.

Ok, Everything works fine. On a single computer and in my little network Mac-PC. Then I install the dbase on a FM Server (Windows NT) and: - the first time the speed is great, I shut down the dbase - I open it again and now it's sooooo slow (and bound to stay that way) What's going wrong? Links are fine, everythings ok, please H E L P. Maybe it's me as it's the first time I installed a fmdbase on an FMServer. All the files are in my remote server window. And as long as the server isn't activated everything works fine. This makes me feel helpless, Mich

We're hosting some databases with FM Server and we just switched to 2000 from NT. Now I can't open the hosted databases on the machine that's hosting them, it' can't find it's own IP address. The other computers in the office (both Macs and PCs) access the files via the sever's IP address. FileMaker is set to use the TCP/IP connection, so it's not that. Any suggestions?

We have installed on a remote server (Windows Server 2000 NT)FileMaker Pro Server 5. We are 10 users each sharing a certain number of volume and each having its own private volume. We have never been able to share a database between all of us. We have about a dozen different database that are shared between some of us and some between all of us. Support from FileMaker is inexistant, they told us that they can't see what the problem is and just don't care. Does anybody out there have an idea of what the problem is and what to do about it. Here's a quick "Orientation" for FMP 5.5's Auto-Update feature. First, open the "AutoUpdateExample.fp5" database that comes with the 5.5 server install. Examine the fields and scripts in there. The example database is designed to check for and download the Server Administration plugin. You have to duplicate the functionality of all the fields and scripts in this example for any plugin downloading you want to do yourself. When you look at the scripts, it's not always real obvious that one external call - like External("FMA-Version", 0) - needs to replaced with the equivalent call for the plugin you want to work with. In the case of the Troi Dialog plugin, you would need …

Hello... Been using FM Server 5 (Mac) for about 6 months now. Have used the "scheduled backup" feature to back up to a removable disk, with no problems.... Now, I get a "error message" when I try to back up my files. It will back up all of them but one, which of course, is the main data file that holds most of the critical info. It will not back this up now. I open the server messages and all it says is something like..."can't write "main data" to disk... What gives? Worked like a charm and then all of a sudden...it doesn't. Do I have a bad file? Is there a fix to this problem? This particular file holds about 200,000 records....so it is a big file and importan…

If I use FM Server 5 to host the databases, will that have any impact on the databases being hosted? I know that if you install FM 5.5 on a workstation and open an FM4 file it will convert it to FM5.5 and this is not backward compatible. which would mean that users will not be able to open the database without using FM5.5 Thanks in advance

I am hosting 2 different sets of databases with 2 separate Filemaker Server (Version 5.01) applications. From the Guest tab window, one of the applications only shows the Guest and the Protocol while the other application shows the Guest, Protocol, address, connection time and idle time. As far as I can see, they both have the same preference settings. How do I show the address, connection time and idle time? Is reinstalling the software the only way to fix this?

Would the speed of FileMaker Server 5.0 increase if we were to add 512 MB of memory to our dedicated G4 FileMaker Server? FileMaker Server 5.0 is the only program running and is the foreground application. We currently have 256 MB memory in our G4. Mac OS takes about 45 MB of memory to run and FileMaker Server 5.0 is using about 45 MB of memory. This G4 is dedicated to running only FileMaker Server 5.0.

In one of my database files I have a script that imports data from several other files (I use the Import script step four or five times). Using regular FM Pro 5.0 on a network, the script takes a few seconds to run. Recently the database was moved to FM Server 5.0 -- and this script now takes several minutes to run, even with only one user. I don't know much about FM Server (and don't administer it), so this may be a stupid question, but: Is there some reason for this? Are imports always slow in the Server environment? Thanks for any advice anyone can provide.

Just converted 32 databases from v4 to v5 and am hosting them with v5 server. All are functioning fine except one. The problem db comes up asking for a password and if one is not provided you can't get in. The same db opened with Pro locally will let you in without a password. I will research password configurations in general, but hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I've been going to use the backup scheduling feature to backup to the folder that Retrospect backs up every night (I have nothing to do with the whole Retrospect thing, and don't know anything about it). I've just installed FM 5 server, converted all my FM3 databases to FM5, and moved them to the FM 5 server folder. I've started FM5 Server, and activated all the files. But I can't open the files from a guest computer. The files show up using the "hosts" button in the "Open" dialog box, but I get a "file cannot be found" dialog on the guest computer, which is running FM 5.0. If I use remote administrator to 'stop' the database, I can then open it, although I'm then hosting it. Any thoughts on how I can open server hosted files from my PC? Many thanks, Jack

Does anyone know how to resolve this? I've recently taken over support for fm in my company and I'm new to filemaker. We have fm5 server, currently with 128 hosted files. Frequently, my users request that a copy of a file be sent to them, so I close it, ftp it, attach it to an email and send it. They typically rename the copy, delete all records from it, update some layouts and send it back to me. Then I ftp it to the server, move it into the correct directory and using my local fm5 pro with server admin plugin, I try to 'open' it. When I choose the file, I get this message... Hi all, I am in the process of setting up an installation of Server on a Citrix Metaframe box so that multiple users can access the centrally stored databases over a TCP/IP connection. I have heard that this can be done, but before I drop multiple thousands of dollars, I would like to know if anyone has had any poor experiences with this type of installation. Most users will be accessing with fairly fast connections. The Citrix box will not be a speed demon, but I'm not sure that is a problem. Any advice or cautions would be appreciated. Chris

I was wondering if anyone had noticed any problems with running FileMaker Server 5 on an NT box. We have it running on two NT boxes. One is really just a large workstation, and the other is a Dell poweredge 4400. The 4400 continues to blue screen while the workstation runs pretty well. It mostly happens when we do very large deletes from FM, but not always. Dell has not been much help in this matter. I just don't see how it could be FileMaker seeing how the other machine is doing twice the work, and hosts 3 times the data and has not had a problem. Any help would be great.

I'm currently running Filemaker Pro on a NT 4.0 server. I'm using the web publishing to let people access the databases through a web interface. I need to be able to let people have access to the databases through the web interface whenever the server is on, even if someone isn't logged into the server. Does either Filemaker Unlimited or Server let me run the program as a service so that even if nobody is logged on to the server, people can still get access to the site? I'm looking for basically the same ability that IIS has in that you don't need to be logged into the computer, the computer just needs to be on.

When this occurs, I can solve the problem by either changing the preferences within FM Server o…

We have FM% server up on a Win2K server machine. My question is this - the manual and docs state that all files to be served are supposed to be either in the server directory, or one folder level deep. Is this indeed the case, or is there a known work-around some one might be able to help me out with? James Huie

This is very simple I'm sure, but I need reassurance please! I recently had a problem running a database on 2 linked PCs. Changes made to global fields in the host file were only updating in the guest file after it was closed and then re-opened, and changes made to global fields by the guest weren't visible by the host at all. I tried a laplink connection and also an ethernet one. My IT support (who aren't very Filemaker familiar) were stumped, but I eventually read in the help file that this non-updating between host/guest is normal. As I need changes saved and visible for all users, would using Filemaker server to run the host file do trick?

This is very similar to a post already here - I have the same problem, but the answer did not come out in the other discussion on this topic. I have FileMaker Server 5 with all of our data. It serves to our FM clients inside the office, and over TCP/IP for remote users. I want to get FM Unlimited to open a FM Servered file and share it via the web companion plugin. This is not working. I can not connect to any databases that FM 5 Unlimited has open that are being served from FM Server. All works well when a local file is open in FM U 5, but not a file being served. The ultimate thing here is that I want to use Lasso to access my files on FM Server, through FM U. T…

Dear Sirs. Could someone help me with trouble I have? I have two machines the server running under Windows 2000 Server platform and the workstation running under Windows 2000. They both have RAM 256 Mb and Intel 700 MHz processors. Also I have a LAN with 100Mb speed. I start FileMaker Server 5 at the server machine and FileMaker Pro 5 at the workstation. When I try open a simple database (for example database have one record only with fields creation date and creation time), it takes 30 or 40 seconds to open it from from server. I test my network, everything works fine. So could some one help me to understand this problem ? Thank you.

I recently updated my company's filemaker pro server from 3 to 5. For some reason the users from our remote offices can't connect. The server is running on a mac with TCP/IP networking with remote file access enabled. I've also had a report that 5.5 works but that's not exactly a resonable option right now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

We run Filemaker Server on a stand alone machine in our offices. There are two computers on the factor floor which logon to the hosted database. We want to start and stop filemaker hosting automatically. We can start it no problem using task scheduler but we want to stop only in there are no current logged on guests. Since quitting time varies and they often work OT we don't want to rely on task scheduler. When we used to host our database using standard Filemaker we were able to run a script every 30 minutes (with a plug in), and if there were no guests the database would shut down. Can anyone help?

I have a Filemaker Pro Server behind a firewall/proxy server. Our company does not want to serve filemaker through port 5003. Is there a way to change that port number and to have the clients access the appropriate port number? Thanks

Has anyone tried FileMaker Server 5 out with Mac OS 9.1? We just bought the server version and installed it on a Beige G3 wiped clean and freshly loaded with Mac OS 9.1. FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited will not stay connected to the server for longer than 24 hours. FileMaker Server says that the client is no longer responding even though EtherPeek shows that the client returns every one of the FileMaker Server's test packets that go out once a minute. Has anyone else had this problem with any other configuration? FileMaker Pro 5 Unlimited is running on a machine with 8.6. They each have plenty of RAM allocated to the respective FileMakers.

Currently we have about 40 users accessing FMServer through a firewall and all the other users reside on the same side of the network as FMServer. Sometimes the users that access the server through the firewall receive a message that the database couldn't be found and an open dialog boxes appears. If they cancel from the dialog box and choose the same button to open the database again the database will be found. I'm not having the problems with users that aren't going through the firewall. The users that are having the problems does vary and doesn't seem relative to their hardware. Everyone is using TCP/IP network protocol. The IT people claim it is an application problem…

Hello all, Everything I have read seems to indicate that in order to get the Today function to update itself, you must close the DBs on FMServer, then launch them in FileMaker, close them, then open them in FMServer again. As a test, I created a simple DB with a Calc field set to "Today". When I just close down the server and relaunch it again, the Today value gets updated (without having to open it in a regular verson of FM). Is this middle step of using a regular version of FM necessary?? Thanks...

Help! We have an ethernet network made up of 13 Filemaker Pros users using Win 95/98 and Macs. We just installed Win 2000 and Filemaker server on one machine, upgraded the ram to 256 megs and are using it as the server. I installed the remote administrator on my machine (win 98)and and it works fine for several minutes then causes the server to crash.

I upgraded my company from Filemaker Pro 3 server toFilemaker Pro 5 server. I upgraded also the clients. And put the server on a Mac Grey G3 boosted at 400Mhz. I have speed problems. In the business, people say Filemaker is to slow. I look, and when Filemaker have to calculate or show pop-up menus, it is very slow. I put the 'More CPU for filemaker' option. Don't know really what to do. I don't think that is normal. There is only 3 clients at the same times on the server. Thanks. G.A.

We are in the process of using the FileMaker Suite as an enterprise application solution. We are doing some testing, and I am about to purchase an NT server which will host FMS. I am currently looking the following server with the following specs: IBM Netfinity 5100 Server Dual 866 PIII Processors NT 4.0 SPC6 512MB of Ram 18GB 10K Ultra160 100 Fast Ethernet, maybe go to GB Ethernet, not sure. I've read that you guys said RAID is really not going to be useful here, but I'm not sure about that. Anyhow, the database is going to be constantly accessed via FMP 5.0 by employees to update records. At the current time, about 15-20 employees will be accessing about …

Hello, I have a FileMaker Server 5v2 running on Win 2000 Server. It may run fine for several days, but then all of a sudden the server disappears from the host list and I have to manually stop and start the service to see it there again. I never had this problem on NT 4.0 Server. Any suggestions? Thanks, Orville

FM server has a limit of 50 files. I understand that there is a relationship between the number of files in a solution and the number of users on the network and that this relationship limits the speed or accessability of the solution over a network. Can anyone expain this relationship (if it is real) so I don't create too many files in the solution to hamper usability in a 5 or 10 or 20 user network? Suggestions for further reading would be helpful too. Thanks.

Hello, I need to take a FM5 database (from a Macintosh) and plug it into a website being hosted off of a Windows 2000 server. Can anyone tell me which applications I need to buy to do this? I'm sure I need Filemaker 5 Server on the Windows machine, but what tools will I need to do work on my machine (Windows 2000 Pro)? Does everything I need come with the Server edition, or will I need to buy one of the clients (i.e. FM5, FM5 Unlimited, FM5 Developer...). I haven't seen much to help me make this decision. Thanks a million, Chris

I thought that an underscore on a file name will hide it from the Hosts listing when accessing over the network, but it does not seem to be happening, as it does when using version 4.1v3 client. Am I missing something, or is there a new way of doing this? The sharing option for each file now contains an option for Multi-user (Hidden) which hides the file. This should also be able to be toggled via the Scriptmaker.

What is the best way to go about making our company database live so that computers can access, update, modify, add records and such over their dialup connection? I need to maintain full FM Functionality. We cannot use web browsers. What are my limitations and is there a way go make it accessible to more than 250 users at a time? All advice is welcome. I am in the middle of a FM 4 to FM 5 conversion. My question is can a FM 5 server exist on a FM 4 server? I know they can not serve files at the same time, but if I install FM 5 and leave it turned off and then turn off FM 4 and turn on FM 5 for test when I want, will this work? If somebody has tryed this and gotten it to work, what problems did you run into?

I apologize if this question has been asked before. I am in the process of ordering a machine that will be used specifically for FMServer 5.0. I have read the minimum requirements for Mac and for PC, however, I would like to know what the general consensus is for the machine type/size, etc from those of you who have had must more experience than I. Currently, there are 9 people using a Mac and 1 person using a PC to access the FMP Files. I have them all set up to use TCP/IP. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What's the best way of setting up FM databases to be served to remote clients? Our sales people are asking for this for when they go on the road. I've been told that it's possible to access our FM databases through the Internet. Other advice has been to use a dial-in server. FM5 Sever currently resides on an NT server and hosts through TCP/IP over the LAN to Windows and Mac clients. The server is connected to the Internet through a router and T1 connection. Thanks, Franklin

Scenario: FM Server 5, 6 or so users logged on. One user starts a script to print a report which finds a subset of records in a child file for that report. A half second later another user starts the same script to print a different subset of records. Question: is the second find going to interrupt the first and if so how do you prevent it from happening. I suppose what I am asking is does Server 5 provide each user in this scenario with its own found set of records or does something else happen. Thank you.

We just upgraded to FM 5 Server and it will quit on its own, seemingly at random. We'd successfully run FM 3 Server on an old iMac for a couple years (and a PowerMac for years before that.) We have 9 users max at any time. The error message we get is -1070. We've tried everything: switching from AppleTalk to TCP/IP; recovering each file in 3 then cloning, converting to 5 and importing; reinstalling the server; buying new iMacs to replace the older power macs on the network (though we still have 2 power macs in use). Please help!!!

What I am doing here, is replacing an NT Server with a new server. Filemaker 5.0 Server is running on the old server. The sysadmin starts Filemaker Pro 5.01 on the server every morning, then clicks HOSTS, then hosts the database files. 1 - On the new server, I can start Filemaker Server. When I start Filemaker Pro and Click HOSTS, the databases do not appear. Where do I specify the location of the databases? 2 - There are about 20 Filemaker Users. The company has licenses for each. On most, I can see the license number on Help-About-Info. The copy running on the current server doesn't come up with a license number... it's just blank. When I install filemaker on the New…
