So I have a client with a fairly complicated FMP file hosted on Server and they just got an iPad. They want to carry a copy with them that's just for reference (read-only) and have it get updated nightly when they plug in and sync. Server unfortunately always backs up to a folder within the backup folder that is named with the date and time. Any easy way to get that latest backup to sync with the iPad? I've set it up with DropBox which works fairly well, it's just kind of manual at the moment. Thanks for any suggestions. It's all Mac 10.5 and FMPS11.

I just got FilemakerGo, and think this is a great step forward. I had tried to use FMtouch, but it was so hard to work with, that I gave up on it. I am a physician, and use Filemaker for my Medical records and prescription writing. My main concern (other than the missing printing feature, which I assume will be coming if we pester them enough) is security. FMtouch had database encryption. Filemaker support just informed me that FilemakeGo does not. In fact, none of the Filemaker Pro databases can have encryption. My question is this: How secure is the data on FilemakerGo, and Filmaker Pro in general?

I noticed that portals with a scrollbar do not scroll when viewed on Filemaker Go, at least on my iPad they don't. Neither by touching the scrollbar to the right of the portal, nor by swiping up/down in the portal list. Anybody else noticed this? Best, Ernst

Hello, On Sep the 2nd, I attended a siminar on developing for FileMaker GO that was hosted by Richard Carlton Consulting and FileMaker. It was an excellent presentation which was similar to Richard's Devcon Presentation this year. There are several videos, and files you can download, and he has provided some links to other resources. Will the separation model work on FMGO? If so, how would you get both databases to the device? One of the downsides that I see to this platform is the difficulty in syncing data from say an ipad to your desktop.

Hi everyone, We got our FM database up in an iPad, but can't figure out how to export the records to another computer.. The database in iPad is just something that the user will use remotely, and the records need to be integrated with the main database file (with the same design) in a computer. Now we need to figure out how to somehow retrieve the database file off the iPad? Anyone who's familiar with how the new gadget works? It doesn't seem to have the email attachment function, and I don't even know if we can store files in any locations in iPad.. otherwise i could just email the FM file... Let me know. Thanks a lot!

The documentation from FM states that you can store sound but can't play them in a container field. Has anyone made a work around for this? I tried to embed as a Quicktime movie since iPhones and iPads are built on Quicktime but nothing. My system is designed for kids with fun listening tests that rely on containers with recorded sentences. If anyone can think of a way around this limitation, that would be great.

Windows XP sp3 iPhone 3G (OS 4) I have used iTunes successfully for the past two years. Yesterday I had an issue with my phone and successfully restored all iTunes media and backups on my iPhone – except for the FMGO iPhone app that (I realize now) I did not sync/backup before the Restore. All of my apps were restored except for this one. I have a receipt for the app from Apple, but I cannot figure how to get FMGO back on iTunes and onto my iPhone. Any recommendations? Sorry if this is not the correct place to post this, but I cannot get any help from Apple/iTunes support. Thanks lpm

Hello I have a perplexing problem. I have the same database hosted at austinmichael.com and fmgateway.com. They both have the same issue. If I connect to my database hosted on either site on Filemaker Go using WIFI, it works beautifully. If I'm using 3G, It will not connect. It won't recognize either sites and won't open the databases. Not to complicate matters, but it might be useful to know, that if I'm on 3G and use VPN to connect to my network at work. I can connect to the databases on either hosting site, no problem (though it is obviously slow going over 3G through VPN back through 3G) My thought is this is either a hosting issue or a port issue on th…

Hi Guys, First of all it's important to say we've been blown away by just how good FM Go really is. It opened and ran the database solution we developed over the last 10 years without modification. I now find that it may be a good idea to optimise layouts for a better user experience. My question relates to performance and how FM Go actually communicates with FM Server. Local network access using iPad is fine, however when on mobile data it's too slow to use. Does anyone know if each fp7 file is loaded in full to the device or whether it only downloads only the selected layout information and data on request. Essentially this will decide if i'm to put the t…

On FMGO, you can access the scripts for a solution from the Cog wheel in the upper right hand corner. Is there a way to prevent scripts from being selected in this way? I want them to run scripts from the solution ONLY.

I know that FileMaker Go does not support printing, but has anyone figured out any workarounds? We are trying to use FMGO with a POS system and we need the ability for the waiters to send their orders to the kitchen. Currently we do this on a Mac Mini POS terminal. We have the FileMaker client print via a script that executes an AppleScript. The AppleScript determines which department in the kitchen to send the order to. I was thinking that I could have a script running on the server every 30-60 seconds, and have it check a field value to determine if the order should be printed, but I am concerned about the server load of having it run so frequently. …

While testing Filemaker Go on some databases hosted by FMServer I noticed some obvious performance issues. Drawing pages was pretty slow on complicated layouts, for example. However the most serious issue issue arose when performing a Find based on a calculated field. This brought the app to a near standstill, whereas it is reasonably fast on a desktop Mac. I assume that this is due to the processor performance of an iPad. Is there a guide to designing databases which optimize performance for 'CPU challenged' clients that might be helpful for the iPad? It would be nice to know what sort of operations are handled by the client vs. the server.

Anyone heard any rumors about the creation of an FM Go Store where you could purchase FM GO apps? This seems like a logical next step since these apps can't be sold through the App Store. We have a half dozen apps that we feel would be extremely attractive to FM users; however, using FM GO we can't make them available to users unless they already have FM GO.

I was wondering how popup windows that are used for modal dialogs or select lists perform on FMG? I know two windows on the screen aren't supported, but do you switch to the popup window, stay modal and then switch back? Or, will modal users not be able to have this interface?

I've downloaded the iPhone version, and so far quite impressive. I'm seeing a ton of potential here, but I'm also seeing a very glaring flaw. It doesn't appear to support any type of data exporting. None of the needed script steps are supported. Now why would they do that? I realize it's meant to connect to a hosted database, which is great, but what if I have customers in the field and firewall issues prevent direct connection with FileMaker. I'm wanting a way to send their data to an FTP or via email, and have FileMaker import it. The only thing I've been able to accomplish is a send mail where I include the data I want to export in the body of the email. Anyone kn…

I don't have an iPad/iPhone to test, yet! However, I'm wondering about the impact of hibernating. In the fmgo_dev.pdf doc, at the top of page 13 it states: "1 When you hibernate FileMaker Go, any currently performing scripts are aborted. If Allow User Abort is on, you can return to the previous state when you resume FileMaker Go. If Allow User Abort is off, FileMaker Go will close instead of hibernating. " What does this mean, exactly. What previous state would I be returning to? A script aborting unfinished could be quite a bit of trouble for those who appreciate data integrity. Do I return to FM after hibernate, and the script continues where it left o…
