Importing & Exporting

Getting data in and out of FileMaker.

  1. Started by michele,

Hi, I've been browsing this part of the forum but haven't found an answer to my problem. Is there an ultimate solution for importing from a csv file in filemaker 6. I'm talking about several files with a whole lot of fields (+90) that are being imported and have to be assigned to the right field in a database with +300 fields. The field names aren't similar. Of course I've done imports before but never for this amount of fields. Now I'm going crazy writing my import script using the filemaker import window, searching, scrolling up and down, trying to remember where I found a field and when I find it back wondering where the other field stayed... an…

  2. I am interested in using FileMaker to develop manuscript for a project that will be be both online and print. I want to be able to locally format text fields with italics and boldface in FileMaker, and then be able to export the text coded--either XML, HTML, or XPress tags--so that the local formatting is retained. I know that this was not possible as of FM version 5, but I'm wondering if that has changed in v7 or v8. Is there a function that allows FM to recognize italicized text in a text field so that I can add "" and "" around it in calculation field? Or is there a third-party add-on? Thanks in advance for any tips.

I've have jpegs of my art in the AppleWorks DB that I'm importing into FMP 8. While I've mananged to get the fields to FMP by saving the Appleworks as ASCII and spreadsheet before importing, the jpegs never get into the ASCII or spreadsheet in the first place. Other than re-importing the graphics (oh, that's all right, there are only 781 records), is there any work-around?

hi guys. i have an active database, which co-workers use. i would like to continue to develop the database without tampering with the active database. i thought about creating a new database and i want to import the fields to the new database. in the new database, i created 2 or 3 tables (named the same as the active database). now i was able to transfer the fields to the first table. but i can't change the TARGET TABLE to import the other fields in tables 2 & 3.

Hello, I was wondering if someone can help me with an import I do daily. I currently import records from a web page (that I've been given access to as a courtesy). What I've been doing is "Select All" on the web page and paste this into a text file which then turns into a tab-separated text file. All I had to do then was set the "First row is a header row" option and import using the "Update Matching (add new)" option. This has worked fine until the number of records started to grow. It seems to take almost a minute per 100 records (I use FMP8 on a 667MHz G4 PB). I don't have the "perform auto-enter options during import" option selected. I've tu…

Example, in excel I have a column called Address2 which has City, Province and Postal code. And in another occassion, I have many fields (in Imports table) that needs to be merged into one field (comments) for my working table. It'd be ideal to be able to drag and drop a file or image onto a text field and have it enter the path as text in the field. Either that or clicking on the text field would bring up a file browser. I know in 6 and earlier, you had to export to a known location then use a file plugin to move the file to the desktop. Can this be done now in FMP8 using the get(desktoppath) function without using a file plugin? Also, would this be platform independent? Thanks Greg

If I pared it down to just a few fields the output would look like this ([CR] and [LF] denote the control codes) As you can see this is horribly, horribly broken. Several times a day we need to go in and alter these orders or in my case import more information from an excel file into the database. The problem I am having it, when I put in Order number equal order number and then import a specific field, instead of adding it to the record we have now and updating it, it creates a new record. This is becoming problematic when we have over 3000 records before the duplication. How can I stop this from happening and placing the information on the clients record without having several records for each field I update?

I have a solution hosted from a FileMaker Pro 8 application. When accessing the database from a client, I am having an issue with an export script I created that exports an RSS (xml) document. The difficulty is specifying the path for the export. If I am at the local machine, everything is fine. Otherwise, I receive an error when exporting. I know this is an issue with the file reference, but am not sure how to correctly setup the export pathing for clients. Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Does anyone know if it's possible to export the currect record only (much as printing can function). I know that I can create a find with the record's ID number (and so then have only one record in the found set), but I don't want to have to do that every time I want to export. Is the easy solution staring right at me?

Greetings. I have a script in a FMP6 solution, written by a vendor, which retrieves data using an import step. It performs an HTTP request, and uses an XSL style sheet, then performs the import. The problem is, as soon as we change the URL to HTTPS (which it should be), the step fails. I know the URL is correct because it works fine outside of FMP. The vendor suggests we have to change a setting on our network. The network manager and I debugged a few things, but see no issues. Anyone know if there are settings specific to FMP or FMP server (5.5) where I can modify things to make this work? thanks in advance, Heather

Although I've been working with filemaker since 1988, I've never used a spell check before. Now that I'm using a lot of text both in French and Dutch, it wouldn't hurt to check for mistakes directly in filemaker in stead of exporting my typings to a text file. I've always used the English versions, because it's easier to get the information I need, without having to look up the Dutch translations for English terms. But now I'm stuck. I got the English dictionary wanting to change every Flemish word I use and I seem unable to lay my hands on the Dutch dictionary or the French one. It's basic for someone using this thing since Filemaker II, but, well, there …

This is my first posting on FMForums so I don't know what to expect... My problem is that I have data (being a city name and a county name) in one field that is seperated by a comma. I want to seperate the two from each other and get them in seperate fields. I immediately tried to use first word and last word functions but realized it didn't work--of course the cities are sometimes one or two words as well as the counties. Is there a function that I can use that will recognize the comma in the middle and pull out data respectively? Help!!

I have a dilemma... We recently switched to filemaker pro to track jobs in our department until we get a new program (Virtual Ticket) implemented. Originally, we thought it would be best to keep the two different catagories separate in two different filemaker databases, so we duplicated the exact database and have maintained different records in each one. The problem now is that we want to combine the two together, but it has container fields that will not allow it to export the records correctly. I am new to filemaker and inexperienced and cannot figure out how to make the two sets of information available on one database. The two databases are IDENTICAL but I can't get …

As it stands now, the checked boxes will export in the order that they are checked, but I want them exported in a fixed order. So if boxes 4, 2, and 5 are checked in that order, I would like them to output as 2, 4, 5. Also (this is a good one), I'd like to be able to print out what each number represents. So like if 2 is L, 4 is A and 5 is V, then, using the example above, I would like 4, 2, 5 to export as L, A, V. I dream bigger than I'm able to accomplish. I tried creating a global text field, setting this equal to "¶" and then exporting with my other export fields, but when I open the output file in BBedit, I see that it has inserted a "¿" instead of a line break. 72. Anyne got any ideas as to how to script a find-replace "" with "/" in a field that contains a file path. In a scripted find-replace the is always regarded as an operator, even with the surrounding quotes. It works fine as a manual find replace - but I don't want to pass this on to an end user in my runtime solution. I want to be able to copy a file path from the OS, paste it to the field and use it to export field contents. The problem is the pasted result has the slashes going the wrong way for Filemaker to interpret as a valid path. Of course this could be corrected manually but it would certainly be more desireable to have this done automatically.

For clarification I entered square brackets [] in the sample above where there is an unknown rectangular character contained in the output. What I am after is a .txt file that looks just like the contents of my global field. Anybody know how to solve this dilemma?

(Fortunately this question is more theoretical rather than some immediate crisis – which is often the case with my other postings:) I have a medical application that uses a long list of Vitamins that I’ve imported from Excel into FMP 7 to create a “Vitamins” table. I specifically used auto-increment to assign a record number to each of a couple hundred records. This was intended as a “one time” import – I shouldn’t need to do it regularly. As part of the application, I use the record number to do look-ups: The record number gets stored in a “Medical Tests” table – I use a portal to display the actual Vitamin names. All works fine – but here’s my concern: At…
