    Hi, I want my dates to display in following order: day-month-year (28/11/2005) 28th november 2005. Now they are displaying automatically month-day-year (11/28/2005. How shall I do to change that? and how to define a field where the date is changing automatically every time I have done something with my records, changed address etc.

    I have a database of 18 courses (i.e. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)and I have a database of 20 instructors (i.e. Fred, Sam, Bill, Tom, etc.) Some instructors are qualified to teach some of the courses. There is a relationship established between the two databases. In the instructors database I have a "Data Enty" form that has all the information about an instructor. I have a repeating field that is a value list based on the "course name" in the course database. I click in the field, select the courses the instructor is qualified to teach, so on the layout I have a list of the courses an instructor is qualified to teach in the repeating field.     Hi There When upgrading my FMP5 solution to FMP7, one of the first benefits I noticed was the improved record locking (down to field level). This was especially important to me as a lot of data input is via Portals & previously if the main parent record was in use, the whole portal was locked. Today, a problem has re-surfaced where I have started getting "record in use" messages when 2 users are trying to access different fields in the same parent record. This also knocks on and seems to lock the portal also. Is this normal - or have I changed something thats caused this problem. Any help appreciated. Thanks

  4. Please help!! This is very frustrating. I am creating a rate schedule (a list of prices) we send to our customers. Some fields only apply to certain customers. My boss doesn't want to see any blank spaces, so I need to figure out how to put "N/A" in the blank fields. Should be easy, but I can't figure it out. All fields are in number format. Thanks!

    Hi All, just a question about the Define Fields screen. When defining fields for a table that has lots and lots and lots of different fields is it possible to group them into groups? Say for instance I'm working on the supplier table I'd like to group the fields for address details together under one heading then group the fields for banking details under another heading, etc. I could then hide or show a group as required.     I am needing to set up a field based on this calculation. If "field 1" contains "insert" then "Ins" I know for the most part how to do the If(then) calcs but I am not sure how to make it look for a string of text in field 1. I can't use the "=" operator because field 1 can contain more data than just "Insert". It could say "Insert1", "cd Insert", "BRC Insert" etc. It could also contain data that doesn't have the word "insert" in it at all. Please help.

    Ok, i have script with a copy/paste step... When i paste, i'd like to paste "with style". The field in wich i'm copying it is in 12 size font and i want the paste text to be in 10 size font. I know that scriptmaker lets me paste "without style", but how can i paste "with style"? Help from FMP says that "Paste without style tells FileMaker Pro to ignore all text style and formatting associated with the Clipboard contents." So, how do i change style and formatting associated with the clipboard? Thanks p.s. i'm using fmp7 btw

    FileMaker 7 has been a big improvement for us, and it is great to not need to take the databases offline as often as before. One thing I find we still have to take the databases down for, however, is to assign the default value for a global field. Is there a way to assign the default value for a global field in a file that is shared on FMP Server 7 or 8 without taking the file offline for a time? The field in question is a container field, if that makes any difference. Thanks for any help!

    I am attempting to use an auto enter replace existing values calculation to make entering data into a time field more efficient. I am trying to be able to enter numbers only without the and without am or pm in military time. I can enter in military time but have to use to and I am trying to skip that.     Hi To All, I am having a problem with Quick Time being lost from container fields. The Quick Time is 'stored' in the container field and I thought that meant it was permanent as compared to a reference to a related path to the file. I lose the QT when I move the FM File to any different location or onto another machine. I also tried compiling to a Runtime with same results. I read up on storing the files in the Web folder as recommended by FM thinking FM must check there as a standard filepath. But even when I put them here it is not linking.     I have a table that has expiry dates (think of it like video rentals). And of course a client table which it is linked to. What I want to do is to show the effective date (you can say it's the closest due date). If I was to create an calculation field in the expiry table called effective_date, how should the calculation be? Maybe I shouldn't be using a calculation field for this.

    I've searched and can't find anything that similar to what I need. In my layout I have a DATE IN, a DATE OUT and a RECORD COMPLETE field. When the record is created, the DATE IN field is auto-entered w/the current date and RECORD COMPLETE is set to NO. When the record is completed the users fills in the DATE OUT. When a date is put in the DATE OUT field it triggers an auto-enter calc that changes RECORD COMPLETE to YES. I also have a CATEGORY field specified as a checkbox set.     Hi everyone, I've been trying to figure this out for a while...but everything seems so complex...and it seems like it sh ould be something very simple. I have a database where students are entered when they need to wait for a course. I have a field called Status where hte user selects from a value list either Idol, Denied, Red-flagged or Granted. Is it possible to total the number of results for each with a calculation field (ex. total of idol, total of denied, total of red-flagged, total of granted).     I use windows and FM8Adv. I am trying to create multiple areas that slide on a single form. I basically have columns with 2 feilds side by side. If field 1 is empty, I need it to slide to the left. Sounds fine right. Well, since I have multiple columns, everything slides all the way to the left, shredding my columns. How can I use the sliding feature and control it so the items in each column slide, but the columns don't slide? Thanks.

I'm currently creating a clients table and one of the features requested was that the field Comments cannot be modifiable after it is created. Right now I'm trying to put text into the repetitions with this calculation: Case(Get(CalculationRepetitionNumber);"V1";"V2") I was thinking that V1 and V2 would show up in the repetitions, but only V1 does. So I'm not understanding something simple. What am I doing wrong? Eventually I'll use Let to define V1 and V2 by calculation.

    I need some help with a particular calcuation. I'm designing a solution to monitor weight training progress in the gym. Each exercise has a particular routine that requires an increase in weight/resistance after a particular objective is met. When you achieve a certain number of repetitions for a given exercise, you are supposed to increase the weight by approximately 2%. The problem is that the smallest increment of weight that can be increased in the gym is 5 lbs (2.5 lbs for each side of a barbell for example). Members need to be trained in particular elements for example 30.1,30.2,30.3 and when they have done all of the elements, they are then qualified to sit the exam comp30.     Attached is a very simple database with a huge problem. There are 3 tables: Category, Item, & Received Items. 'Items' may be apples, oranges, & pears, whereas 'Category' may be either fruit or vegetable. In 'Items' there's an unstored calc field that sums all related received items. I wrote to newmillenium about it and I am awaiting an answer. That prompted me to want to put a default image in my field that says "picture not available yet". Is there a way to auto enter that?     I have twenty-five fields defined as Yes/No radio buttons. I want a calculated text field to combine the results so that if buttons 1,3, & 15 = "Yes" then Combined_Text_field = text_1 + text_2 + text_15 and so forth for all possible combinations. Can someone point me in the right direction with this calc? I know one way would be for me to set individual global text fields for each radio button and then combine them all in the combined field. I was just wondering if there was a way to avoid this intermediate step.

    So, um...can anyone explain why an indexed field would spontaneously change its indexing language to German? This has happened to me now on several occasions, often to multiple fields at a time (though never to multiple fields from different tables at the same time...at least not yet), and needless to say this is wreaking havoc on my system. Scripted finds and relationships based off of these fields automatically fail if the field is not properly indexed. Most of the afflicted fields are old, and had been indexed properly for quite some time.

    To be totally honest, I just started using Filemaker yesterday. But I am a quick learner. I have taught myself a lot about it already, but I just can't figure this out. Here is what I want to do: I have a field (Rights Due) with radio buttons Yes and No, and I want specific new fields (Agency, Payment, Contact) to appear on the layout when Yes is selected. What i would like to be able to do, is have it so that when you click on a drop down selection field, and start typing - the list will jump to the appropriate selection. e.g: On Name/Title - Type in MI and it jumps to MISS This would particularly be useful on fields that only have YES and NO for selection. There can be more than one value selected for each record.     I'm having trouble with time fields. Whenever I enter a time into a time field I get the error message "The value of this field must be a valid time ...." The message tells me what the time should look like (presumably taken from my OS X System Preferences). Even if I enter it exactly as it says, I still get the error message. The problem first occurred in FM 7, and now repeats in FM 8. Is it a FM problem or an OS X problem - or perhaps a user problem!? Help will be much appreciated.

I've written a script in Fm 6 (then I've converted the file to FM 7) which defines all the repetitions of a multiple field (6 repetitions) with a calculation (the result is calculated evaluating and taking the value from a related database). In FM 6 and 7 it works and all the repetitions are filled up. In FM 8 only the first repetition seems to be definable through a calculation, the other repetitions stay empty.     Hello All, I have a portal that i use to verify products with another portal. When this order is verified it should automatically update the calculation in the verify table and output verified in the current layout. It does not automatically update. The only way for this update to occur is if I commit the record by clicking outside of the portal. The only thing that drives me nuts about this, is that it works correctly in FM6 by automatically updating the calculation without having to commit the record. Any help with this one would save me from going nuts.

What I need is a calculation/text field that will see the result from the first field and add 5 spaces in front of the text in the field. I'm sure there is a way but I can't figure out a way to tell the computer to add 5 spaces without actually doing " ". Any help you can give will be much appreciated.

My calculation field has the following type of calculation (I'm looking for the calculation result to be text) If ( AddressBook::NameField = "John" ; "Send Birthday Card" ; " " ) This calculation works as long as John is the first record in the related table. However, if John is a subsequent record to the first - it doesn't work. result one should = insert the text "Send Birthday Card"; result two should = an empty field. This is just an example. My real field result is much more complicated, and has nothing to do with trying to figure out when to send a birthday card to John.

    Ok, another one for today: Is there a trick to using global fields across shared databases? I've never been able to create a global field that stores data across the network for multiple users. I've dealt with this by creating a small database of "globals" that are actually just text fields that I can reference from the other files. I feel like I must be missing something.

  65. I'm trying to create a field that displays contents from multiple related records. Is this possible? This is the specific instance: I currently have a 'song' database. Each song is a record with additional fields for album title, genre, explicit content, composer, etc. In a separate 'album' database, I would like to create a field that lists all the songs from the album (based on a relationship matched on album title). Is this possible? Or am I going about this in the wrong way? I can create a value list that gives such a list, but I don't know how to make such a field.

    To validate the duplicated record , I used SELF relational and serial# to do like this if serial# <> SELF.serial# then DupFlag is TRUE otherwise DupFlag. It works fine in version 5.5 or 6.0, but it seems NOT work properly in version. DupFlag is always TRUE even there is no duplicated record. I just switch to Version 8, still new to it since the architect of 8 is totally diff from its earlier versions. Any help or idea woulf be appreciated very much Thanks guys.

    I have just started working with File Maker and only do so in a very basic manner. I use it to keep track of college student book records. We are currently working with anothe company and need to exchange information. When I sent the info to them they said they needed a certain number of positions for the student name, ID number, and account number. For example, currently I have like 11 spaces for the first and last name and I need 15. Is there a way on FM to add a finite number of spaces or positions to a field? Sorry if this is confusing!

    There is a lookup in "Invoices" (from "Works") that performs fine on many records and not on some. There is a parallel lookup in "Commision Invoices" (from "Works") that performs fine on the problem records. I have recovered the each file with no errors and no improvement. I have duplicated a record in "Works" that does not lookup correctly in "Invoices" without improvement. Is there a way to check for DB corruption or are there alternative methods of clearing this irregularity?

    Hi I have a simple Photo Catalog created from the Built-in Photo Gallery template that comes with FileMaker 7 Pro. I've modified it slightly but am having a problem where my container field is showing pictures fine in FileMaker but when viewed on the web thru IWP the pictures are being resized to fit the container. Whereas I've set the containers settings to Reduce, keep proportional and Center which IWP seems to be totally ignoring any ideas on how to stop it stretching / resizing my images? I've tried viewing it in IE and FireFox, both show it the same. Cheers Matt

    Hi all, So, here's the story... The users want to be able to have a new line item on a purchase order pull in the last price at which they bought that item. And, they want the "read in" price to be in black on the layout. If, on this occasion, we are purchasing the item for a different price, the user needs to be able to overwrite the price that was provided from the last record; when this happens, the price should change to grey on the layout.   75. Is there any way for a field in a table to be setup for auto-entry based on the "max" value found in a group of records (instead of a repeating field) within another table? I'm trying to find the biggest number in a set of records for a field from Table 1, and then auto-entering that found number plus 1 into a field in Table 2 whenever a new record is created. The MAX function apparently won't work, since it only searches for values within a particular repeated field and not within an entire set of records (using a particular field). A search in forums on this site didn't turn up any info about this yet...

    Greetings and salutations - I built a large Case statement to calculate my total task cost. The problem is that if 'Task Unit' is not blank and the Round Priority equals either 'Priority24' or 'Priority72' the result is not calculated. Any clues? All other parts of the statement will calculate correctly. I thought it might have something to do with having a number at the end of the priority, but the calculation will work if it using hours instead of units to calculate.     I am trying to set up a report where the headers change based on the current page number. However, when I create a test field that is an unstored calculated field consisting solely of Get(PageNumber) and place this on my report, I always get 0 when I preview the report. My solution is a bit more complicated, but to start, I have repeating field of Titles (10 of them) and a repeating field of IDs (also 10).     Hi, I have a global Summary Field displaying a time total that calculates correctly. However, the field displays nothing while I am modifying any of the fields it totals - once I am done, the display shows up again with the modified total. What I would like is for the old total to remain while I am modifying the source fields and have the new total appear once I am finished. I have tried other methods of making this work, but I can't seem to get both the global and the calculation parts correct.     Scenario: A user enters data into a field that has been formatted to show in Title Case, but the user enters all characters in lowercase. Those items are then used as a value list in a pop-up menu. The pop-up displays all items in the pick list in lowercase (although it will show the final choice in Title Case as I have formatted the field to do so). Is there a way to get the entire pick list to show in Title Case? I have specified the text formatting for each field and even added a TextStyleAdd calc for all fields. What am I missing?

    I developed a database and in the database I have sales tax being figured by a field that is either yes or no depending if it is wholesale. If it is no, the calculation figures out the sales tax and puts it in the total. The problem I have though is that it was working great until I imported 1077 records. Now my Sales Tax field that had .0825 as a calculation is gone. So the tax cannot be figured out. The field is showing the standard -654321.987. I cannot get it to take the .0825, it says the field is not modifiable. How did my field format of .0825 go away. I need it back in there so it will figure all the taxes. Hope this is makin sense.

This field is defined in Items.fp5, when I try to enter 10.00 or 10,00 (depending on wich one is set as the decimal seprator in Control PanelRegional and Language Options) it throws an error saying it is decimal only. In fact, that is correct, but when I enter wheter 10.00 or 10,00 in the same field (UNIT_PRICE) of the same record, but on another page (Print.fp5), it accepts "." and ","...   99. I have created a database of 90 records. On the top of each record I have a record number symbol. Also on each record I have an ID field. Its options are: indexed, auto-enter serial, required value, unique, numeric only, allow override. When I initially planned the database, these two numbers were synchronized, so that the Id field was the same as the record number. Since then, I've added more records. Now they are no longer the same. Sometimes 2 records have the same ID number, which means that one record will have incorrect information in the portal fields.
