I setup the table, my problem comes in when trying to print labels (off a 6 label per sheet) when the first 2 labels have already been used.(or any combination have previously been used) I need to make it print on the next available label. I can't figure out how to do this. Any help will be appreciated much.

I am in the process of designing a medications list database for my office, one where we can record a patient's list of medications they are taking during their check in process. One key to this design will be ease of use. I know that I could use an inventory-like setup, whereby I would have a table labeled med_chart (similar to a purchase order set up). Utlizing a med_join file portal on the med_chart table, it would pull information from a continually updated medications table of products used. Hello all, I have an invoice and am having trouble with my sub-summaries not displaying the data correctly. The following is what I need my invoice to generate: 1. Show all the suppliers that were used on one invoice for one customer by month. 2. Show a total of all line items for that month by invoice number and customer name. Problems: (Right now I only get 1 supplier line and 1 total in browse mode, in preview mode I get more line items, but no totals or breaks between customers) I am using the report wizard, but I don't think I am entering the correct fields to be summarized, or I am putting them in the wrong place. Question 1: I use FMPro 7 and have a question. Provided the subject matter, you may be able to tell i am new to filemaker. I am building a database that has to add contacts. Each record has company address, phone numbers, etc.... Is there any way, other than using the first letter of the entry, to select the first item in a pop up list? In other words, I can select the SECOND item with the down arrow key (one keystroke) and enter (second keystroke). If I don't want to use the alpha keys, I have to hit down and then up and then enter to get the first item (three keystrokes). I'd like a key that selects the first item regardless of its first letter. Thank you. Deborah

HI, My FMP file contain 3 tables: I have a Table named "Project" ,one named "Parts" and another named "Elements" A relationship have been established between "project" and "parts" usind a "Project ID" match field. I have a layout with 5 popup list that ether says active or complete. Its basically a list of things to do. The popup lists are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. What I need to happen is, when complete is selected in 3, list 4 and 5 will automatically change to complete as well. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

In fm 7. I have on one layout with fields to edit records as well as a portal showing related records, and this is in a single table. When I select a related record from the portal, the record comes up to edit. But I don't want the portal to jump back to the top. So if I select record 20 from the portal I want the portal to stay on record 20. I thought by turning in layout mode, "show field frames when record is active" off would do the trick but it don't seem to. Any ideas? Thanks, Doug

Hi Guys, I'm asking for advice for a fairly simple problem. My FORM screen has about 30 fields which the user can alter at will. The problem is, the altering at will (as the multiusers are changing fields and then not realising it!), is there a way where I can have my FORM screen so that users can "view" data (so the FORM would not allow any data entry), however when they want to edit data, i'd like them to click on an edit button, which will allow entry into fields. Hi everyone. I have searched high and low for an invoice example without luck. Currently I have an invoice file that consisits of one record per item ordered. It is working wonderfully, but I want to be able to look at a list of all invoices per customer from my customer file. Instead of showing just one reference to an invoice number, it shows a record for each item ordered in the portal. So if customer A bought three things on an invoice, my portal is showing three occurances of that invoice. I have a drop down box on a layout that needs to display a list of values from one of three different tables based on the value of another field on the layout. For example, there is a drop down box called "person type" which can be either P for party, W for witness, or A for attorney. Well, this is sort of a printing issue, but it has more to do with portals. I'm going to be printing a short portal on a form, should be no more than 10 rows. In each row I need it to print the current # and the total number of records. For instance, the form is printing a child's information and I need it to print "Child x of xx" for each one. I'm sure this is possible, but I haven't done enough with pritning related records through portals to know how. I know it's frowned upon printing through portals because it's not the least bit reliable, but I'm being forced to make and EXACT copy of a printed form, so I can't have seperate pages for different print…

Ok, I'm having a new problem with printing. I have a small form where Users can enter in text. As they type, the text box will automatically scroll so that they can type as much as their little hearts desire. The problem I'm having comes when I try to print these forms. I'd like the layout to expand the part to fit in all the text so that it will print nicely. I've tried making the fields very large, and setting them to slide. This works most of the time, but some Users seem to type more than I thought possible - is there any setting that let these fields expand to fit the text in preview/print mode? Thanks

I have a credit card field that I would like the first 12 digits to use the bulletz font and the last 4 to use the arial font. Is this possible? I haven't been able to get it to work but wasn't sure if it wasn't possible or if it was the way I was using the TextFont function. This is the 1st time I have used the TextFont function. When I copy and paste information from a web site into a field, the font format from the web site is pasted with the data. This is not what I want. I want the pasted data to take on the font characteristics I have defined for the field under the layout. I tried Synchronize Field Font under Field Behaviors, but that had no effect. I also searched the manual and online help but was unable to find a solution. Thank you in advance. I imagine this is easy and perhaps common answer.

I upgraded to FileMaker Pro 7 from 6 and now some portals aren't showing information in Preview Mode and aren't printing (though I can view the information in Browse Mode), and also there are pages of blank space between the portals. The portals have repeating fields and I think that the database is leaving space for if all the portal's repetitions were needed even when only a few of the repetitions are needed. Selecting Sliding Up didn't help. This all worked fine in all previous versions of FileMaker Pro. Please help!

Hi, I'm working on a library project, and at the moment, a portal is showing all the loans by a certain person. However, I don't want it to show loans which have been returned. I have a checkbox graphic that indicates whether the book has been returned or not ( 1 = Not returned, 2 = Returned). How would this be possible? I have attached the file in it's current state if anyone needs to have a look. Any help would be appreciated.

When I compare text written in Arial in Pro7 with the same text in Pro5 there are big difference in sharpnes. It seems that in Pro7 the text is not so sharp and clear. I cannot see that there are any difference in settings. Has anyone seen the same problem and know how to deal with it so the text will be as sharp as in pro5.

Is there a way w/out using plug-in to disable the Drop-down menu on top of FileMaker? My intention is to disable the menu for users but allow admin/programmers to have "normal" access. The closest plug-in I found is http://www.dacons.net/fmplugins/menucontrol/extfunc/extfunc.html but it cost $89!!!

All, created an activity log dbase and have a couple of fields where I am using a pop up menu from a value list. The problem is that while it all works, it is extremely slow. As I go from field to field it takes 3+- seconds for the menu to appear and once you make a selection it takes a second or two to do anything. I am having trouble understanding how filtered valuelists work. I have done them two different ways. But both ways were from records that were already created and had a reference. What I am trying to do on my next project is show related records through the value list from a field. What I have is a student who wants to join in 2005 and I have a list of classes that have a field 2005. In a Client System i have a Field: ClientType which can be set to "Potential", "Active", or "Inactive" From my main entry system, i like to use X join portals to show all the available records for any given system. In this client system i would like the portal to show any given set: All Potential, All Active, or All Inactive (no problem so far)... or SHOW ALL. That's where i hit my snag. Hello, I'm new to Filemaker... I am trying to perform a Find and have the results shown as a list of rows. Then, when I click on a row, additional fields are displayed below the list in sort of a "preview" area. Kind of like an email program where you have the list of messages, click one, and preview it underneath. I created a portal, which I think is what I need to do. But the portal only shows one record, one row. I don't see any settings for the portal to get it to list more than one item. Ideas, thoughts, suggestions? First time post, I checked for this everywhere and I couldn't find an answer. Anyway, I created a database for a friend with fields to type characters in right to left. (for example: hebrew) 2 problems: 1- no matter what font I set the field to type in, it automatically switches to arial. 2- it types out fine, however when I need to edit the field everything is backwards. I have a value list containing training sessions A, B, C, D, E, and F. I want to summarize these values at the end of my report. Within a record I need to ensure that the numerical value of a particular field falls in a range that is specific for that record. The range is quite different for each record. How do I define that field? Example- I am entering lists of certificates issued by my clients. Not sure if this is the correct forum but here goes... I have a layout with multiple portals. These all work fine and I can add/edit/delete rows in each portal. My question is really to do with adding new portal rows. At the moment new rows are created by clicking/entering on the last row of the portal. This works but is not very intuitive. What would work better is a button above each portal that creates a new portal row. I know that using Go to Portal Row [Last] will do this. However this only seems to work for the first portal. Buttons above subsequent portals incorrectly add new rows to the first portal only. I know this script is dependent on the …

Just a quickie... I am using a portal to display a single field of related data as a visual cue only. Actually, I'm using a portal to show/hide a set of buttons for performing an operation - it only shows up when I set a flag. The problem is, if the user clicks near the buttons but not on them, the portal that they are sitting in gets selected, and this big area of the screen turns black. Is there a way I can keep portals from being selected like that when a user clicks on them?

Hi, I have a value list (pop-up menu), whose values are pulled up from a field in another file. That field is a compilation of 2 date fields in that file (DateToText(PeriodStart)&"-"&DateToText(PeriodEnd))- ie. it is a text field. I'd like these (text) values in the pop-up menu to be sorted by PeriodStart, now they seem to be in random order. Maybe it's supposed to be this way, but I had hoped this would be fixed by v7. Sliding/Reducing size of part does not seem to work properly in certain parts. I have a report that needs to include items from a couple different tables. I am in the process of building a 'cash register' database. The enclosed files will help explain much better. I initially created the database to be all inclusive in one file. As the line items were entered, the subtotal, tax and total were all calculated on the fly. Everything worked great. I am a teacher in the process of creating a database for staff use. The database contains a number of portals. In one portal, I have included a print button which shows in every portal row. I had hoped that the print button would use the field data in that portal row and use it in a letter to be printed out. Alas, it is not working as it appears that only data from the first portal row is being used. Simply, how do I ensure that, if I click the print button in the 4th portal row, the field data in that row gets used in the letter, and not the field data in the first portal row? Many thanks! Frank

Is there a way to create a portal that shows data from two seperate tables. This is what I'm trying to do. I have a table titled builder with a portal. There are two other tables. One is titled Collection. The other is titled DataFiles. Users transfer records from the Datafiles (which is a database of all posible records) into Collection (which is actually what they have). What I need is a way to bring data from Datafiles and Collection into the portal in Builder, and have an icon that tells the user that this record is not in thier Collection. Is there any way to doubleclick a record (field) in table view and go to layout? Obviously I can do it by having the user click a field then click a button that calls the layout, but the user just wants to click or doubleclick on the record and have another Browse layout displayed, without having to also click a button.

Dear All, I have desigend a layout/report as Table View. In layout mode I have inserted a logo into the header. Now I run my find script, everything works o.k. and all found records can be seen in the table but why doesn't my logo/header show up when I go to Preview or Browse mode?? What can I do do get the desired result and the header/logo shows above my table? Thanks in advance, Andy

Hi, I''m very new to filemaker..I'm trying to adapt one of the 3 tabbed templates by moving some of the Graphics tab elements higher up so I have more room below. I move the graphics on one form...but then of course they need adjusting on the other 2 forms as well. I've tried copying the graphics I like because they are in the right spot...then I move to the next tabbed form...on this one I paste...but my pasted version does not go to the exact same spot. How do I easily get my graphics to the exact same spot on the next form? (So that when I browse from one tab to the next the headings/graphics features are perfectly aligned.) Still learning the basics: File One Job Number Item completion date completiondatecalc IsEmpty(completion date) = 0 result is text File two jobnumber completioncalc constant "1" portal: item I would like the portal to only return those records of file one matched by job number where there is a completion date. When I try to establish a relationship, completiondatecalc::completioncalc constant, I get an error message saying that using "completiondatecalc" will not work since it is not indexable .... I have a layout that has portals to two different tables. Right now, it seems to print OK. I've read that this should be avoided but I don't see how with my present set-up and needs. Is there any reason to expect problems with this in the future if it is working now? Neither of the portals has more than one line. Thank you.

To have a portal sorted in diferent ways I have the sort order of the relationship based on a calc field, which takes its value from a global field. By changing the value in the global field I change the sort order of the portal. The problem is that I have a mix of text and number fields on which I need to sort. If the calc field is formatted to be a text result, the number fields are sorted as if they are text - for example in ascending order I get 1, 105, 2, etc. If the calc field is formatted to be a number result, the number fields sort correctly but the text fields don't. Is there a way round this?

I have a small DB that is used to collect data from the various faculty here for their yearly interviews. I have them report on their various research/publications etc. and then compile the data into reports used by the admin here. The problem is, I have a layout set up to print these reports, and when I go to preview mode (or when I print) my field headings disappear. All of the data is there, but the labels seem to completely vanish (they look fine in layout mode and in browse mode). We have a interesting problems here where a button that switches between form and table view works fine on a local database but as soon as that database is moved to the network, it starts prompting the message "Do you wish to save changes with the layout". We don't want this but cannot figure out how to get rid of it -- it seems to happen on some databases but on other ones. Help please! Scott

Hi. I have my main table which is comprised of scenes. An intermediary table which contains characters and then the third table which has the notes for each character. I would like to create a portal in the Scene Form that shows the character's notes side by side instead of in rows, so the portal table would look like this: Character1 Character2 Character3 Notes Notes Notes This layout is important because the length of the notes varies and is often several lines long and I would like to be able to see the different characters in the scene on the screen at the same time. Sorry for the constant postings - I was just wondering if anyone else ever had problems when sliding with multi-page reports. It appears Filemaker won't slide past page breaks, so on some lesser filled reports only half a page is full and then it will skip to the next page. Ideally I'd love to have the fields slide up to fill the white space, regardless of what page they are on in my layout. Has anyone figured a way around this?

Hi (sorry for my English) It seems to me that the maximus size of the layout isn't changed (upgraded) from FM6 to FM7... it still is only 283x283 cm2 ! If you have to import fields from other app, and the number of fields is, for example, 600, FM7 "only" places about 442 fields in the layout. And it is impossible to tell to FM to automatically position those fields into two rows... Is this correct ? (or I lost to Know something)

I want to create a printable invoice. I think I should probably be using sub-summary parts, but I am having trouble figuring that out. I have an orders table and an invoices table that are related using a unique invoice number. The orders table has the individual line items that go on the invoices and then the invoices table does a lot of the calculations such as totals, tax, etc. I think the layout should be based on the orders table. But what type of section do I put the line item info into, and what section do I put the total calc fields into? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I think I've got the idea of sliding the fields into my head after a lot of trial and error. However, I can't find a way of reducing the body size. Some of the records I've got only have a small amount of information in them whilst others have oodles. Consequently, some of my entries on my report need to be one line deep whilst others need to be half a page. I'd really appreciate some help!

I have a layout that I'd like to use for printing. I have created a sub summary part and put in <<CueEditStatus>> where edit status is one of three preset values that a user selects for each record via radio buttons. I am having trouble getting the summary to function in the way I'd like. What I'd like is for it to display each Value with the amount of time next to it. Time for each record is obviously from another field in the record. I have no trouble getting the time value however it only summarizes one of the selections from the value list. What am I missing?

I am working on an invoice layout. I have an invoice line items portal on the invoice layout. We have too many products to have the product ID field in the portal be a drop down list. So I created a script that would pop up a window showing all of the products. The user clicks into the product id field of the product they are adding to the invoice and then clicks a button. The button I had going back to the portal and go to last portal row and pasting the product id value into it. It isn't consistently going to the last portal row. I need a dynamic value list but have not seen any examples of exactly what I need. I have 2 tables... LEADERS & GROUPS Each GROUP needs to be assigned a LEADER. I get the LEADER value list from the LEADER table... not a problem. But once a LEADER has been assigned to a GROUP I no longer want them to display on the value list. I have tried various things... but nothing seems to quite work and I am at my wits end!

I have been working an interface solution for some time now. One solution has form the basis for my interface; 15 Minute tabs (http://www.filemakermagazine.com/) . In order to develop my own solution, I re-created Matt Petrowsky solution. My re-creation left me with some perplexing questions. First, one particular text box disappears when I place a background pattern on the body part. The text box just has a caption and is not attached to any field. Some field labels or other text elements will automatically resize when you format them differently. For example, if you cloned field labels and the new word is much shorter than the original, by applying any different formatting, the borders of the label are resized to fit the new word. Other times this doesn't happen and you have to manually resize the borders to tighten them around shorter words. Anybody have any clue why this works with some and not with others?

Hello! Quick question as to whether there is any way to overcome the normal "window close" controls (e.g. on a OS X Mac, the top left red button). I have certain validation scripts that run upon exiting from a field (using a free event plugin), but they can sidestepped by a user who changes a field and then closes the window (without leaving that field). I could script a close window button, but that's of no use if I don't void the normal OS one. Any way to do this without expensive "menu" plug-ins? Thanks for your assistance. Justin.

I was under the impression that relationships could work beyond one level in portals and such in FM7, but, alas, i am not getting the desired results. DB's: Vendor, Category where Vendors can have an unlimited number of Categories assigned to them. I have a "Primary Category" field that sets the vendors specified category to "primary" otherwise, it is considered a secondary category. Hi I am trying to create a daily timesheet to help tract time and costs. I thought I could use the weekly time billing template that comes with the programme and adapt it but have hit calculation problems. I then tried to create from scatch but can't make the portal relationship work. I want the timesheet to work as file attached (Time Sheet Lorna.fp5). I have a value list (pop-up with the 7 stages of our production). What I want the database to do is once you select 'a production stage' from the pop-up menu, is to copy that status to another database called "worktracking" with a date and time stamp (new line entry). I'm building a database for my cabinet shop. I have a lot of different types of cabinets and each cabinet has several possible views. I would like to keep all the views per cabinet on one layout. My goal is to navigate the layout via buttons. If you wanted a plan view, hit the plan view button. If you wanted a side section, hit the side section button. I have a portal that contains information about various projects. I set it up to sort the records by project number. I'd like to give users the ability to change the sort criteria. For example, they may want to sort the records by status, or by date. This seems like something that should be pretty straight forward to execute, but for some reason, I can't seem to find a way to do this. I have a portal in a table that is related to another table labeled employees. The employees table contains all pertinant information for that employee. The portal shows the employees for a given apartment complex. The information is first name and last name and status. I want to be able to click an Icon within the portal and be taken to that employees information page. (The Related Table) 1. If that is possible how do I do it? 2. Here's the deal: File 1, Main, collects student demographic info. Data is also entered into 2 other files, Classes and Tests, via portals in Main.
