Script Workspace and Script Triggers

I have 4 number fields formatted to 2 places as decimals. I want an average of these 4 fields. The trouble is not all records will have 4 entries. Some records could have as few as 2. I need it to be able to total whatever is available (2, 3 or 4 field totals) and then average using the appropriate divisor. Can it be done using calc fields or will I need to script it?

how would i make thumbnails pictures, when clicked on opens in a new window, the actual size of the picture??? any1 kno?

I use FileMakerPro for a database which contains articles. Some articles are pretty long so each article use up more than one page. At my "Preview" view , those long articles will be cut off since it can't fit into one page. And on the next page, instead of the continuation of the record, it will contain the next record. Can FileMakerPro print part of the article all the way to the bottom of the page and the rest on the next page (i.e if it's in MS Word, we can do a "Page Break")?

There's a "Copy Record" script step, does anyone know any easy way to create a new record (different DB) and Paste all of the copied data into it? I realize that I could copy a Unique record ID and just use lookups, or relational fields, but I'd like to avoid doing that if at all possible. If not I guess that's my solution. -Arin

Is there any way to take the value from a field and change the user name as appears in the application preferences using a script? The only way I can think of is to use the script command to go to the application preferences screen then have the user manually enter their name.

I'm trying to export FMP 5 records to XL. There are 6 cal fields (text) containing return characters. I export the fields in dbf but it also works using sylk and wks formats. The problem is that when I open the file in XL, I lose the return characters. They are replace by a funny character or by a blank space. I am trying to perform a find based on information in a field in a portal row. An Evaluation database is related to a Student based by a teacher field. The portal in the Evaluation database shows all the students for a particular teacher. I would like the user (teacher) to be able to select a student name from a portal row and find it in the Evaluation database and go to a particular layout. I can't seem to get a selected student id from the portal into the find. Thanks..Steve M

I am trying to find a way to search between two dates. ie. from the beginning of a month to the end of the month. The search would be inputed by person doing the search. However the search dates would be any date that is inputted.... I would like to have two fields to do the search. first field would be the begin. second field would be the end. I have a database of articles. Each record contains title of the article, category and the content of the article. When I use the "Export" function for this database, it will export the whole database into a Text Delimited file and put all the records into one text file. My question is: Can FileMaker export function split the database and export EACH Records as a text file?

I've designed a date field to set the current date (via scripted button) and formatted the date to appear as Saturday, August 26, 2000. The button option is in case the user needs to post date their written report. I field tested the layout by creating several fictitious discipline reports. Everything went perfect till I highlighted the date field to clear it and watched it revert to 8/26/2000. Although it's unlikely this date will ever be cleared, the switch still bothers me. Maybe I've chosen the worng way to get the current date... SetField ["Date 1", "Today"]. What have I missed?

Here I am with yet another problem. I have a customer database and a salesperson database that are related with a "Key" to allow relations between all records. Problem: In the customer database, the sales slips contain a field for the salesperson's name which is selected through a value list related to the salesperson database. I am trying to do the seemingly simple task of creating a script that will search customer files at the beginning of the day and display a list of customers who are celebrating a birthday on that day. Filemaker doesn't seem to like wildcard characters of any sort when doing a find function in a date field. Possibly I have found a limitation with FileMaker but would not like to give up yet so if you have any further ideas please let me know. I have tried most everything. I want to set up my database so that a when a user makes a selection in Field1 (radio buttons) Field2 then shows a figure based on the selection in Field1. So far I have been able to complete this but what I really want is to make it possible that if Field1 is changed in the future then a new figure will be displayed in Field2 automatically. A colleague of mine has just asked me this question, coincidentally one that I looked at briefly a week or so ago and passed on (too hard). We want to quit FMP on the server, but if any people are connencted to any of the databases it stalls: a dialog box appears with the "Ask" button that needs clicking on. Does anybody have a way of reliably forcing FMP to quit on the server and close all connections elegantly and automatically? I have tried error trapping on the server script (ie, Set Error Capture, Close[database], then Status[CurrentError] but the Close step still brings the dialog up. Thanks in advance. Vaughan

i've been using FM5 for around a month, it's my first shot with FM, and i've run into the same problem twice. In find mode, you are allowed to use symbols (< , > , ... , etc.) and that's great and all, but is there a way to do that from performing a find in a script. The first time was for a range, and i decided it would be faster for me to just do it in find mode, but the second time was to help surlyb with his/her(sorry) problem with the Alert Timed Script post. i think the solution for that post would be fairly simple if what i am asking is possible. I've used the GoTo box successfully on past dbs but I always knew, as I was designing, what the choice options were. On this last db I've designed it to create a dynamic value list based on entries made by the end user(s) & including as many as 20 choices. All users will be on individual computers-no server involved and it's FM5.0v3. I am a FM neophyte. I have a database of records. The first field is the day I entered the information in the database. There is another field for the company name. What I would like to do, is to write a script that will 1) search for a specific company name, and 2) then alert me when 60 days have passed since I entered that record into the database.

Is it possible to specify what fields are copied to a new record when the Duplicate command is activated? I published my database using HomePage 3.0, but when I duplicate a record I only want certain fields to carry over to the new record (I have two unique fields that I don't want duplicated). I have a need to set filemaker server timeout for inactivity to 10 minutes for most of the clients for security reasons. However, the clients that are responsible for daily input and access to the data base are also logged off after ten minutes of inactivity. I need a way to allow a select group of people, either with the status(groups) or status(username) that will not log them out for inactivity. I was hoping to write a script that would execute every 9 minutes, causing activity to occur for the select user. But I can't figure out how to get this to work. Any ideas? Is there any way to bypass having to click "Done", when running a spell check loop script if no mispelling occurs in a record? Many records being checked, becomes extremely cumbersome to have to click "Done" when no misspelling occurs in a record. Any suggestions greatfully accepted.

I am trying to script a routine that will take a list of "available" salespeople and put them in order "on deck". When with a customer, I want to move the top person "on deck" to an "On the Floor" list. I want to write a script which finds all records older than two weeks. I tried entering "< // - 14" into the Create Date field, but it won't accept that as a valid date. "// - 14" is okay, and so is "< //" but it doesn't like it when you put them together. I have tried several ways to get around this, and so far none work. I am using FM 4.1 for Windows NT. Hello all, I am having a problem with formatting numeric data for the web. The numbers come out on the web without commas. I have found a way around this using a script, however, according to one book (Database Publishing w/ Filemaker Pro on the Web by Maria Langer) I should be able to use a calculated field to format the field to produce a number with a thousand separator. What i have found instead though is that the script will work in the scriptmaker but will not work as a calculated field. Why is this and what can be done about it? I'm using an employee dbase with no duplicates and another dbase where I keep training records on each employee which does have the employees' ID's several times. These two dbases are related via the Id#. I need to run a report in the training dbase for each department where the number of employees can be counted (once only) even though their ID# is in there several times. We are running a calandar (Just text)to keep track of reservations. Since we are running crossplatform (Mac Server -PC Terminal) we use colors to define the following. Unsecured= (Bold Condended) Paid= (Green/Bold/Condensed) Secured- (Red/Bold/Condensed) I need to know if I can record an action and save it as a script etc. so that it will simplify the process. I am planning to use scripts that use the "Save a copy as" command to backup databases on the server but whenever I invoke it I get the following error message: "There may not be enough disk space to complete this operation. Filemaker will not be able to open this file if this operation fails. Proceed anyway?" The databases in question are between 130KB to approx 1MB, the partition they sit on has 34.5MB free and the partition on which the copies are being made has 14.3GB free. Filemaker 5 PC I have a table of images that I want to use but only want to store the reference to the image. If the user clicks on the image I would like for Microsoft Imaging to open up and allow the user to zoom etc on that particular pic. The insert object performs this just fine except it also embedds the pic in the record causing the fp5 file to grow too large. I looked in FM5 help and there is information on the link created from file but this also embedds. How can I link a picture to another folder and have a preview of the pic in filemakers container and when the user clicks on the pic it will open up that picture in microsoft imaging? Each record in my file contains a text field with the name of a graphics file. I want to do a one-time import of the files (one per record) into a container field. Is there any way to change the "dialog" that runs when a delete record button is pressed? I don't mind the initial "permanently delete this ENTIRE record? but when the user selects cancel, an annoying second message asks if they wish to continue with "this script?" The problem is, most of my users don't know what "this script" is so they aren't sure whether to cancel or continue. I'd rather that after a message asked if they were sure they wanted to delete this record, the script would automatically resume (based on a cancel choice). Is there a way to insert a value list field into another field? I'm working on a script that allows a user to choose 1 of 4 groups, the next step would be to choose from a value list based on what group they selected. I've tried the ValueListItems function, but it only returns what's in the list, it won't let me choose one value. Any advice is appreciated.

I use a date field in the database and I already use that to view current and today views. I have a loan form where there are five separate fields to fill in the loan item information (because they can loan up to 5 itmes). I apologize for the newbie question but I have a layout with 30 column fields, of which, I can only see 15 at one time. Is there a script that will allow me to select a check box (from a value list) in field 15, keep that value, scroll the window to end to see fields 16-30, then move the cursor to field 16. I would prefer the script to auto occur after I select a value in field 15. FYI, field 15 is Type of Reports with a check box value list of Local, State, and Government. PLEASE HELP! - I need to be able to alert a single user on our network to information that needs his attention. The idea is that our sales staff enters in the information, and the estimator does the quote. But ideally I want the system to alert the estimator to the fact that there is a quote that needs his attention. He in turn can then alert the sales rep that the quote has been done. I have a database that has a text field for the location of an image. I also have a container field with the image in it. Currently I have to type in the image name and then load the image into the container. I was wondering if there is anyway to automatically load the picture when the name of the image file was entered? Or conversely to load the image and have the filename entered automatically.

I am designing a database for 10 accounts. I would like to enter ALL entries and ALL accounts in the same database, sort by Account number and be able to tell the balance on that certain account (like checkbook registry). Can this be done? When I try to size a field with the object size box I can never get exactly the number I need. For example: I want the box to be exactly .220 inches but the thing always rounds it to .222. No matter what number I enter it rounds it to something that is close. Can I have an exact number such as .220? Please Help.

I would like to automate the importation of each jpg (via its pathname) into a container field within the record. My company has used File Maker for years on MAC computers, but they have decided to switch to PC's. When we transferred the database from the MAC's to the PC the layout on the screen was fine, but when we print a sheet the layout becomes misaligned. We have sheets of data that display operation numbers in one column and they must line up with the operation data in another column. Well on the screen the numbers line up with the data, but when we print the sheet the numbers no longer align with the data. It worked perfectly on the MAC version, but when used on a PC we have that problem. What could cause this problem? Please help.

This is a Mac specific problem but it involves a script step so I have posted it here. The FileMaker version is 4.03. Scenario: I manually export (via menu commands) a found set of records to a Zip100 disk mounted on the desktop. Works fine. I then repeat the procedure in order to specify the export to replace the existing file on the Zip. Works fine. Next I create a script to export these records using the settings I have just created. Then I run the script and the following Apple OS message appears. - "FileName.fp3" could not be created on this disk. Hi Has anyone done any integration wity Quickeys and FileMaker for PC? I have created a QuickKeys script which automatically prints a file to a PDF without any user intervention. I am not sure how to integrate this Quickeys script with FileMaker. I have tried Send MEssage and DDE Execute but have failed so far. Any advice/experiences would be valued. Peter

I would like to create user names that simply takes the user's first and last name and put them together. My problem is, if there are duplicate names, I would like the field to automatically calculate it so that it ends up being FirstLast2, FirstLast3 etc... How would I go about doing that? This might be a simple question but: I need to create a script that will open an Adobe Acrobat document based on the value of a field. The problem I have is how to get the PATH of the document on an applescript. Any ideas?

Does anyone know if you need to build an AppleScript to be able to send mail through FM5 or will the Send Mail function work? Currently attempted to perform script with Send mail on apple and it doesn't work. Currently using Netscape Communicator on Apple. Also tried Eudora Light per help instructions and it doesn't work. Hi there, I'm creating a "Submit" button that runs a script to validate a number of fields on a layout (rather than validating every single field one at a time) and then tells the user what needs to be fixed. Based on some suggestions so far, I have created a number field "Record Acceptable" and "Status Message", a global text field. The intention is that for each record, "Record Acceptable" will be set to 1 for OK and 0 for not. Question 1: I have 8.5 X 11 sheets that are perforated and divided into thirds. Does Filemaker have the capacity to divide a page into thirds treating each third as a distinct page without printing on the first third and then skipping the next two thirds before printing again? If so how? The problem with labels is that they will print only one record per label. I need to be able to print many records per label and have it split if the set that is grouped runs over one page (one third defined as a page). I want to "transfer" a set of records I found in one database to another. One example: I want to find all dealers from Florida in my customer database, then I switch to my invoice database. I would like to generate a report that would show a company name and all the employees of that company. Basically, I want it to search through the Company field, print it only if it is the first occurrence, and print the Employee Name associated with that company. I would want it to look like this: Company A: Company B: Employee 1 Employee 4 Employee 2 Employee 5 Employee 3 I can sort it by the Company field but it does not clump all the employees of one company together and it also shows the company name each time. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

This has got me beat and I feel I have overlooked something obvious. I wish to paste the result of a calculation in the next available repetition in a repeating field (actually a subtraction of two paste(current time) fields) for a particular record. It was then intended to have a running total field as well which would show the total time. Any suggestion gratefully received. Garry

I need to import multiple records into a sales database. I use the import while matching on a inique field option. The problem is that there are multiple matches per record & I require all of this information. What happens is that Filemaker overrides the data already present with the last match - even if the fields are empty.

Can this be done? Our database have eight order form layouts. Previously we used serial numbers to add an order number to each order form. This was 'wasteful' of order numbers (the accounting database (hosted on AS400) has a five digit limit on numbers and we have about 12,000 jobs a year), and we have to keep rolling it over. A truely global field would enable us to store an number which would increate each time it was used (that part of the script is easy). Unfornately the user specific/no save nature of global field is not useful to us in this situation. I would welcome feedback or suggestions on what we can do. I'm writing a script to generate sequential numbers when attached to a button. It works fine in an individual record, but when I open a new record it resets itself to 1. Is there a way to keep the current number from record to record while continually adding on to said number?

I'm working on a script that will assign a four digit serial number to an account. The format is A001-A999, then B001-B999, etc. I don't know how to get the letter to change over. Should I use a prefix? If so, how?

Does anyone know of a way to "group" a set of feilds so that when i print a layout this group does not split over a page! I need to use sliding printing and each set of feilds varies in length.
