About a year ago I found out that FM runtime v5 could not be networked without having FileMaker on every computer, I talked to the folks at FileMaker to confirm this and I told them that I was considering dumping FileMaker and rebuilding my program in MS Access, at that time they told me STRIGHT BLANK that MS Access runtimes could not networked without having Access on every computer just like File Maker. Access Runtime program’s CAN be networked without Access. If you are considering developing an industrial network able program DO YOUR HOME WORK Then when you think you have all the information needed to make a good decision on the program you wi…

I just bought FM Developer 6, and since I am competent with C/C++, I am interested in making some plugins. However I don't own a commercial compiler like CodeWarrior, so I normally use the built-in OSX compilers like gcc and g++. However the source code for the plugins is much more complex than what I'm used to, using a dozen files or so over multiple directories, which is much more than I'm used to, and such is hard to compile via the command line. I tried doing it but it wouldn't compile, I assume because I wasn't setting it up properly. Does anyone have any tips for compiling a plugin with gcc/g++ on the command line, or better yet, a Makefile for doing this…

I'm developing a simple Java Swing app, the purpose of which is to allow the user to open one of the particular FileMaker database of choice (via a button). It's simple enough for the Java app to call filemaker.exe. But what arguments need to be sent to open the desired .fp5? Thanks. -- Pat

I've got a runtime filemaker app that was built using Filemake Developer 4.0 on a Mac. It was designed to run successfully on both Macs and Windows in general and it does....at least it does for every version of windows its been tested on. My question is: Will this app run ok under Windows XP? Are there any XP/Filemaker/runtime specific issues at all?

HELP! I left another post, but here is the proble. While working on a File Maker 5 file with a form that was about 9 pages long, I received a "You have performed an illegal operation..." message. File Maker closed down and when I opened the file up in Recovered form, I could not drag the Body tab in Layout mode to add additional pages to the layout. Can anyone tell me why not and how I can correct this problem? Thanks. You can contact me at [email protected] or [email protected]. Thanks and I need some help ASAP. DR. Zagar

What I have gathered from reading in this forum is that my runtime solution can not be bound and work as a client. But can someone explain Filemaker's following statement: "You can build your own solution with FileMaker Developer 6. If it [is] intended to run as a stand-alone (non-networked) application, you can bind your solution using the Developer Tool and immediately deploy it. However, if a network solution is required, you need to license and install a copy of FileMaker Pro or FileMaker Server on your target machine, and then host your solution from there." To me this suggests that if I install FileMaker Server I can then host my runtime solution and it…

Hi there, another question, hope you can help... We are designing an application to run with a "Touch Screen", and would like to hide anything on the screen which is not part of our program. E.g. the Windows Start button, The Desktop, the Filemaker Window Title bar etc. Will the developer's runtime output allow us to hide all of the above? We are looking to Purchase a The Developer but are not 100% sure if it will allow us total control over the final product. Much appreciate your comments

Hope someone can help... We have developed an application in Filemaker Pro ver 5.5, and are wanting to create a Runtime versions of the application. We have been offered a second hand(unopened box) Developer version 5. We are not sure if we will be able to use this version 5 of the developer to convert version 5.5 files. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. (The other option is to bite the bullet and purchase ver 6....but at this stage we would like to keep our costs as low as possible...)

A visitor contacted me about a run-time solution (demo). The guy told me that when he clicked on Menu Solution.exe, the program showed an error message. We discussed that over the phone. At the beginning, the message was telling that FMCOR10.DLL was missing. But the file is in the folder!! The guy double-clicked on that file and tried to launch the program. He got a new error message for another FM... file. And the error message keeps skipping from one to another FM... file. I compiled another solution and the guy is still having that problem. I can run the solution on my PC (XP). The guy has Windows 98 with enough RAM I guess. What is going on with that fr…

I'm using Fm Developer 5.5. Initially I really liked the database design report (DDR), but now I'm not so sure. Maybe it's just ignorance on my part... 1. In the DDR file, is there a way to sort the field names in the list that shows up on the left side of the fields tab? My file has 488 fields, and they're all showing up in the DDR in the order I created them. I tried to sort the fields by field name in the original db before I created the DDR, but that didn't work. Also tried to sort the fields in the DDR report itself, but couldn't locate a field name that worked. 2. Is there a way to print just one page of the report? My define fields report takes 30 pages, …

A user reported an error while trying to run my solution called StudioSystem which hasn't happened before. As I have next to no experience on Windows and do not understand the error messages, I'm posting here in hope that someone can at least interpret what the errors mean. On launch, there is a message that the progam performed an illegal instruction and will shut down. This hasn't happened before and I suspect that there may be some general stability issues with his system, but that's just a guess. Any pointers would be appreciated. This is what he gets: STUDIOSYSTEM 4 caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE at 0001:0000293e. Registers: EAX=006163…

Hi Developers, I am considering getting a copy of FMD 5.5. As of now I'm using FM Pro 5.0 to develop my databases, but I'm reading that the development is way faster with the Developer(script debugger, DDR). However, I only across our workgroup, not royalty-free runtime applications or the web. Is it worth it for me to get the Developer? Is there a discount since I already have FM Pro 5.0? Will Developer 5.5 work with FM Pro 5.0? Thank you for your input

Should a solution created with Developer version 6 be able to import a folder full of images the same way the FM database can? It's not working for me and I can't figure if it's a setting I've missed or a capability that's lacking. I use the Filemaker Developer 6 Developer Tool to create the Solution and it runs fine, but when I choose Import my only available choices don't include "Folder . . . ". Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I sure wish Filemaker would allow for two sets of scripts in the menu and allow one set to be opened by end users of a solution or a runtime. Printing and page set up is a real problem with all the different systems and printers. The end user should be able to adjust these in the scripts through a edit so they can get orientations of page layout correct and not have to deal with print dialog box. I'm forced to tell them take what I give or Open My scripts to them. Am I missing something here or am I suffering a program weakness?

Hi there, I was just looking through Filemaker Developer 5.5 manual - it did not say anything about "Open Hosts" script step NOT being supported. But when do go to Application Preference of runtime solution, there is no such thing as choosing network protocol ! Has anyone faced the same problem? I have a solution with many fp5 files that open up at the start of the first file. I just put FMP Developer 6 on my Win 2000 machine about two weeks ago and since then I have had the program crash probably 15 times while opening this solution and most of the time, it just says that it encountered problems and that it is closing and creating an error log. Three times it has opened part way and I get a memory reference error message which I am attaching a screen grab of and I have to uninstall FMP Dev and re-install the application to get it to run. I have a field which is validated with unique/not empty/ and custom message that says 'The field is empty or not unique. Proceed anyway?'. Because the validation is not strict, yes, not, and revert field buttons appear on the dialog box. hope this is the right section... i'm trying to walk customers through recovering files. i've given them basically the info that's stated in the developer edition's handbook. one guy wrote to me recently saying that it worked ok, but the messages he saw were quite different from what said they would be. apparently there was a question along the lines of ' the data is not synchronized, do you want to synchronize the data?' or something. i wanted to try this and did all kinds of stuipd things to bust a file like force quitting in layout mode and stuff, but the file always comes back up after the normal consistency check. so here's my rather unusual request - how to ruin a…

Okay, so I've got my solution with about a dozen inter-related files... I plan to serve this solution on my Mac to about ten users at any given time. Some problems I am running into are: The "Window" menu item will allow users to accidently switch windows and end up in a place which is not consistent with the scripted order in which they should arrive there. Also, my scripts which call other files and subsequently hide them, seems to cause problems on the client machines - in that they appear to be looking for the file locally. Do I need to modify all of my scripts to call "Open Host" file?? Some of these alternate (secondary) files are only needed for…

I'm curious about a couple things with the DDR Report (database version) SOME ISSUES: Is there something wrong with my template, or are others running into these annoyances? 1. calculation field info does NOT indicate data type (Text, number, etc) 2. most calc fields display the formula both as a calculation itself AND1?! as an auto-entered calc. Writing the manual for a solution, I am a bit puzzled by what the developer manual 5.5 states on chapter 5-7: .quote. Tell your users what to do once a file has been recovered. Tell them to: 1) recover the damaged solution file 2) open the recovered solution file in the runtime appl 3) Save a compressed copy.. 4) Give the compressed file the same name as the original filename .end of quote. What I do not understand are two things. Why is step 3 and 4 necessary, and the second thing: why saving compressed.. Hope you follow my non-understanding..thanks in advance. Harryk

The manual states that in the runtime solution folder a folder named 'claris' should be available. (start of Chapter 5). The additional files delivered on the CD of Developer 5.5 and installed as Filemaker Developer 5.5/Filemaker Developer Tool/Runtime Files do not contain that folder. Can any developer shine a light on this? I expect the missing of certain claris files only can give problems importing graphics, but I'm not sure. I do not have a clean spare mac to try out.. I wouldn't be the first to conclude that it's half a product.. Indeed, the fact that the sort order of the fields showing, is the creation order, (I think) and not an alphabetical order, is a pity. I noticed that in one case which I forgot, sorry, the referencing lay-outs are not reliable, and do not mention all lay-outs for a given occurence. When choosing an item in the portal on the left, for instance a field, the portal resets itself to the start. The selected item disappears. You've got to scroll through the portal to find the selection again to choose the next item. I wonder, is this a Filemaker shortcoming, or would there have been a way with some more i…

I have a runtime solution with some complicated print scripts. I print without a dialog box because I do not want my users choosing the wrong options. We intend to produce a CDrom for distribution to our dealers with runtime versions of some of our solutions that have been produced on FMP 5.0 and FMP 5.5 These include price lists, parts lists, inventories etc. It is not intended (at this time) to have them on the web. I've been using FM Developer 5.5 for several months under Mac OS 10.15 and now under 10.2. Unfortunately, I experience fairly regular crashes when using the Developer Tool to make runtime solutions. For 10.2, I wiped my hard drive clean and did fresh installs of FM 5.5, and still experience periodic crashes. After a crash, I trash all of the FileMaker-related preference files, restart, and eventually crashes disappear for a while. I've attached a crash log on the outside chance that someone might be able to interpret what is going on. Thanks.

I'm making a cross-platorm runtime solution. Things work pretty will, but the PC runtime solution folder includes (1) the runtime engine = good, (2) the target file = good, and (3) many .dll files =bad. In otherwords, the PC user experience is awkward becuase she/he must view all of the .dll files. I distribute the PC soluction with these files tagged as "hidden", but unless the user has the "Do not display hidden files" option checked for their folder properties they will see all of these darned .dll files. I'm developing an application in which the user can create, edit and delete records. The final records need to be displayed in full screen mode (rather like a PowerPoint presentation). Hi Folks, I wish to develop an application to distribute around my company (for use in many separate occurrences of single user mode) in which one of the "bound" db's is also (still) to be used in parallel by a "normal" FMP application. It is simply not worthwhile …

For this, we need a database where I can browse the information that I need, On this Database there are not going to be any update once the software is pack, so is going to be read only and is local is not client server application. What I need is that when the users install the software in the computer, they can have the access to the database without no need of the entire program of the database would not be installed. I need only a runtime from this Database, I will use Java as an interface. Those File Maker could help me with that?

I created a runtime program and it works with timelimits. The user has some minutes or houres to complete a task. Is it possible to create a watch (clock) that moves with time so the user can follow the time flow without any clicking.

Last night, I was bee-boping around, creating my solution in FM Dev 5.5. All of the sudden I got an illegal operation, so I restarted. When I tried to open my solution again, it said that it could not be opened, and to run the Recover feature. I did so, and it said that all 1500K of info had been recovered. I went to open it, and still got an illegal operation (filemaker.exe was causing an invalid page fault, by the way). Then I tried to open it on my Win2k machine and still no joy. It says "filemaker pro.e.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." So I check out the knowledge base on the FM website, and the…

On the Filemaker website, where they mention system requirements, there is no mention of Windows XP. Does anyone know if FMP Developer v5.5 works with Windows XP?

I'm developing an application in FileMaker Pro. How can I design it so the user is required to enter a registration code they receive from me before it works? Also, since they need to renew their registraion every year, the code will need to expire in one year. This protection can be as simple as a message that shows on the screen if the registration code is missing or invalid. Any idea how to place this in a FileMaker application? Thanks in advance for your help.

I am using FM 4.0 and "bound" my files in kiosk mode. It seems that sharing and/or TCP/IP protocol is not supported in this mode... Is there any other way that I can still run my files in kiosk mode while getting data from host files? Furthermore, I noticed that in higher/newer versions of FM, the "binder" or kiosk is no longer being discussed. Is there other ways to eliminate the menu bar... as if running it in kiosk mode?

I recently upgraded from Developer 5.0v3 to 5.5. Here's a problem that was fixed in 5.0v3: "Fixed a problem where importing data from a file with repeating fields, and splitting the repetitions into separate records, FileMaker Pro created new (blank) records for blank repetitions." I'm having the same problem in FileMaker Developer 5.5. Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't it make sense that if they found and fixed the problem in 5.0v3 that it would be fixed in 5.5 before it was released? Here's what the FileMaker website says, in part, re: Developer updaters: "FileMaker plans an update to FileMaker Developer 5.5 to bring the product into synch with fixes made…

I'm just about finished building a solution which I wish to offer access to about ten users at once. My solution is rather complex (in that it has a menu driven system of multiple related files). I've built my own Log-in and password management system (in-spite of reading many more cons than pros to this) and I have attempted (so far) to make the User Interface as simple and intuitive as possible for my less computer literate colleagues. So my goal is to give users as little access as possible to the usual FileMaker features, while having them use my scripts and buttons as much as possible. While at the same time, I may wish to modify parts of my solution as it is rolled…

Hi, Can anybody please explain to me how to add my copyright information to the database I have created? I need to do this before creating the runtime program on CD. Does this info get entered somewhere in the help>about> section? I know the FileMaker info has to stay put, but I need to have my copyright info somewhere in my program before selling any CD's. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi folks, I have a client running FMP Server 5.5, using both macs and pcs. I have been developing for them for sometime at their office. I can develop a new db for them from home on my pc. This is a dumb question but for the life of me, I can't find an answer... Do I buy FMP Developer for my home office? What if someone started developing something there and I take it home to finish it? Will that cause a problem? Recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Has anybody actually succeeded in using the "Rename files and update internal links" in the Developer Tool v. 5.5? I tried many times, with different files, names etc., nothing works. The bound solution still asks for the original files. Neither references to external scripts nor calculation fields nor relationships get updated to reflect the new names. Any help will be appreciated.

So I have this really excellent runtime, created on a Mac with OS8.x. (I also have a Windows version, created using Windows98, but that's beside the point). The question is, what do I need to do to have the Mac version run on OSX? Will the current runtime do the trick, or do I need to add some .dll files? etc., etc.

I have mindvision 8 for OS X and when testing the download installer I get Error creating file error 1008;5, -5000, You do not have sufficient privileges. This is only after putting on the web for download and testing. When I used the installer from the same drive it installed fine however when I tried to access the solution folder I get no priv's again until I showed info and changed priv's for that folder. I have been using Mindvision with 9 for years without any hiccups and was wondering if anybody knows anything about these priv. issues I'm seeing. Mindvision seems to be working fine as I get all the right dialog boxes so I'm thinking it's something else. …

The solution has been developed with FM Pro 5. I checked the solution and every thing is fine. I got other clients using Mac OS 9.2. They have no problems with their solutions. Any idea? Bikeman

I've just upgraded to 5.5 Developer. My project previously runs fine in version 4 of the runtime. I've converted the files over to version 5, rebound them with the new binder, but none of the buttons work in the new version? The opening screen has one button which simply implements a "Go to Layout ...", not even this works. Using a Mac in the first instance. Frustrated, I used the old files with the version 4 binder and everything works fine. What might I be doing wrong?

Hi developers, Forgive my ignorance, I have never implemented any runtime solutions before. I am thinking about it, though, because I need to minimize user access and tempering with layouts/scripts for this one. 1. Reporting solution must be based on our dynamic databases, so if I create a runtime, will it not be static? 2. Having an FMP installed is not an issue (this is not why I'm thinking runtime). An issue is limitting access to layouts/scripts without changing privileges in main databases. But again, will the runtime solution feed on NEW data entered into the main databases AFTER the creation of this runtime. Thanks for yo…

As a newbie (I haven't worked with FMP since '94) I'm tasked with migrating some existing FMP apps to a SQL based backend database. The ultimate goal here is to have ALL of our data reside in a single repository (MYSQL) without having to rebuild a significant number of our user interfaces. We have significant time and effort invested in building interfaces with with FMP and I'd like to keep them, only have them connect to MYSQL on the backend. I've tried using ODBC to connect, but it's not a real 'live' connection ... instead it imports the data into a FMP database, so I end up with a 'copy' of the MYSQL data. Since input is occurring at both ends …

I have recently upgraded from Windows 98 to XP(Home). My Runtime solutions go together ok under XP but will not open on 98. Is there an easy solution or should I look at 5.5. Filemaker 5.0 and Developer seem to work OK although I get the message for other versions of my runtime that the extension I have want to use is in use. Thanks in advance, not an expert, just a avid fan. MAS

Status Current User doesn't seem to work in runtime solution on the PC. It works in my regular Filemaker version on the PC, just not after I bind it. I have a calculation field with the status current user function, and it is coming up as blank. I am trying to tie a registration code to the current user function so that each demo CD that I give out will have a unique registration code depending on the machine that it is on. It's been working great on a mac. Any solutions or alternatives?

This is very annoying as some of my layouts are very detailed and complex. Why is it that when I recover - some of the layouts get screwed up and no longer function. What is going on. My system is quite large with 27 databases and sometimes FileMaker requires me to do a recovery as the file has become damaged for some unknown reason. Is there something I am missing here - after recovery the pop up window says everything is OK. The Data maybe but the layouts are suspect. Hope someone can through some light on this one for me. Thanks Michael.

could someone who runs OS X verify the following for me, please? situation: i have a solution which was bound under 5.0 (classic environment). a user wants to run it on OS X, but doesn't want to launch the classic environment. if the user has FM 5.5, can the main file of the solution be opened with that without having to convert all files (like you have to with .fp3 to .fp5)? if yes, can the runtime engine be trashed? if yes, what happens when one of the bound documents is double clicked? does it launch FM 5.5 or does it generate an error? thanks for any help!

What OS version? Is your client also using Office? - what version? Windows 2000 and Office 2000 or XP installed will sometimes do strange things to unknown extensions, like decide that it is a "Word fast-file", whatever that is, or it decides that the runtime files are Adobe Acrobat files. The extension for the "Word fast-file" does not show up in the File Types list - in other words, it's hidden. You can only see it by opening the Registry. When this happens, the only resolution is to find the offending Registry entry, delete it, then run the EXEcutable of your solution to re-register the extension. I distribute a FileMaker runtime solution on CD and on the web…

The Developer 5 manual states that if I only change the primary file of my solution and do not rename it, I don't need to rebind it. Then it says to make my changes in the original (before binding) primary file. I think I'm missing something here because the unbound file is not recognized by the runtime solution. I put the same three letter extension on it and that does not help. Plus, if the file has the same name and I instruct my end user to put it in the runtime solution folder it will replace the primary file before an import script can be run. Obviously I need help, any comments would be greatly appreciated !!

Lately, i shipped a runtime solution to a client. After launching the program, the first page asks for the user name, company name and registration number which I provide with the cd-rom. This client told me that when she wants to enter any information in those fields, a message told her that the fields are not modifiable. Those fields are text fields. I tested the solution as if I was the client and it worked just fine. I asked her to send me back the solution. In the mean time, does someone have an idea? Bikeman17
