  1. Hello, I have made a runtime solution with two fm databases in it. I want to update a USR file because i want to give new data to a customer. (I figured out the data change in this file) When i put the updated usr file in the runtime folder, overwrite it and then when i try to open the solution filemaker gives the message i could not find the usr file, when i point to it filemaker says the file is damaged. I dont want to send the whole runtime folder to a customer, its just easy to overwrite the old one. Does somebody know a solution for this?

I'm looking for a little guidance. The small business I work for paid a FM developer some pretty good money (around $25K) to write a CRM system to our specs using FMP Server 5.5. This was a couple years ago, and the system is nicely done and works very well. I have no complaint about the quality of the system. We've been using it for a couple years and have TONS of important data we've put in it. But the system is totally locked up - we have passwords to enter data and print reports, but no permissions to change layouts or scripts or do raw data exports. Here's the problem - the developer has many other jobs and interests and is not very interested in working with us…

Hello, I'm well aware that this may be a newbie question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I've spent a good amount of time (about a year) developing a job tracking / scheduling / invoicing solution in FileMaker Pro 7 for our graphic design firm. Several other local agencies have tried it and asked if it's available for purchase. What I'm wondering is this: What's the difference, if any, between a FileMaker Pro "file" and a FileMaker Pro "Application"? Since the solution I've developed is not even a 1.0 candidate, I'm wondering how "upgrades" are handled for future versions. If the end user is using an "application" that's really just a file, how are upgrades han…

I want to create runtime solutions that I can distrubute to users that would simply be an automated "Open Remote" to a specified, static network address. This would save me from having to distrubute FMP 7 copies to 50+ people who are never going to use them for anything except connecting to this database, thus saving me money and them the hassles of connection. I had been trying to recover records that a client had deleted, but the circumstances were stranger: the records were deleted in the source data file, but still visible through a portal in another file. Although I cannot for the life of me see how I could view records from one vantage that were not visible from another, I can say it has something to do with the fact that my client somehow inserted records into the table in question without a required key field, and this somehow corrupted the data table. Do I have to find a PC, install developer, and then save out my solution on the PC in order to get a PC version of my solution? Larry

I've installed Filemaker Developer on a machine that's already got Filemaker client on it. When I run Developer, it just seems to open a version of Filemaker client, and all the Developer features are simply not there. I've subsequently uninstalled the client version, and then run Developer again, still to no avail. Anybody any idea what's going on?

  61. Hi everyone, this is my first posting here! I've search the archives, but if I've overlooked something, let me know. I've developed a solution for the PC which installs onto the computer and then opens in kiosk mode. It works fine except that it prompts me for a username the first time it opens. I am a Mac girl, so I don't know if that is something that happens natively in Windows 2000 or something I can change in my solution. Anyone have any ideas on this one? Thank you all in advance!

Hello everybody! I have a problem with using EventScript for validation calc. On my machine it works fine, but when I put an application on customers machine, validation failed. I have a few similarly fields for validation. EventScript does not recognize a valid script parameter in triggered script. When I turn on debug, I saw that problem is on script parameter. EventScript, always takes a ScriptParameter for previous field. On both machine is FileMaker7, runs on Windows XP. Any suggestions? TIA

I'm quite a number of weeks away from this - but this issue keeps crossing my mind: So I've been working and working on my application - adding fields, deleting fields, adding/deleting tables, test data, relationships, layouts etc, etc. On some level, as clean and as neat as I might leave it - are things internally messy? In strict theory - I guess the answer would be no. My gut seems to feel that somehow this would be very, very annoying - but a "fresh" database would somehow be "cleaner" than the existing database that I

When creating a runtime Filemaker creates 2 files, 1 the runtime, 2 the database data. Since I'm going through beta trials right now, is there a way to distribute new runtimes but not new database data files. I don't want to have to worry about asking people to import there old data into a new database.

I was told that FM Developer could make a file that runs on a computer or website that does not have the FM program installed, for read-only or limited data entry. Is that available and how do I set it up? I cannot find anything in the help files maybe because I am not using the right keyword.

  68. Background: We run a v5.5 Server, v6 Clients on a Windows Server/Network. We have 200+ files on 3 Servers. We take copies of our financial files (about 15-20) each week and each month. Our managers & accounting department use these files to track our data on a weekly & monthly basis. Wish List: I would like to automate the process of Renaming the files & Updating the Internal Links. At this point, we come in Monday morning (or the 1st of the month), and use the FileMaker Developer Tool to perform this process. The files are large, and at this point, I move them to my machine, rename them & move them back to a special folder on the Server.…

I'm new to FM Developer and trying to understand a few things. My understanding is that the developer utilities allow you to make a "single" file that will run stand alone. When I process my database I am left with two files and a folder named "extensions". Is this normal? Is there a way to condense everything down so that it will run with a single file?

  70. I've developed a FM7 runtime solution that I now have a client for that wants to run the runtime applications out in the field on laptops (it's a construction estimating program) and then when those laptops come back to the office they would then sync their information with a master database running there. Am I correct in saying to do this the master database back in the home office has to be running using FM Server rather than just the standard edition FileMaker Pro?

Hi, I am new to the runtime process. Can you import filemaker data into a runtime version? I created a runtime out of a clone of my solution for test purposes. Thanks in advance.

  72. Thanks in advance for any help from a NEW FileMaker User! I was tasked with setting up a 50 screen display system - sort of like an airport's Arrival/Departure info screen. The info to be displayed changes daily and there must be site-specific info on each of the 50 displays. I was given FileMaker 7 Developer to work with. Aditionally, I have the requirement of accessing the database from each site using a Web Browser, WITHOUT user intervention. I'm not sure at this point that FM 7 Developer will do the job. Using Dev7 on XP I created a custom dialog box to delete records. I activated the first two buttons. Scripted button one to delete a record. Scripted button 2 to cancel the dialog and exit the script. All worked as expected when tested. Compiled the database to runtime. Launched and tested the dialog. No problem. Exited and opened the file with Dev7 and tested again and work as expected until I activated the dialog box and instead of using the "Cancel" button I closed the window with the windows close box. When I did this the record was deleted just as if I had clicked the "Delete" button. I confirmed that this behaviour was repeatable in my other solutions. The number on…

  74. I am considering releasing a runtime database which, as I've read on this forum, is a single-user solution only. If a user wanted to upgrade to a multi-user environment (buy as many copies of FMP as they need)am I correct in thinking that they can just export their data from the runtime into the full version without any problems? Of course, I would supply them with the .FP7 file and they would import the data and launch the database using that.

I have cleaned up the code and configured it to run as fast as possible but yet the database still takes too much time loading. I was wondering if one could configure the standalone app to run in the background. then when it was called by the user it would not have to load from the beginning thus saving time.

Hello everyone. I have a FM solution that uses the Troi serial plugin. Works great. Rolled it into a standalone runtime application (not kiosk) with Developer 6. Now the serial plugin transmits but does not receive. It looks like the script dispatching thing isn't working, since that is necessary to receive, as I understand it. In the main (HERD) database, I got the message: "Sorry, FileMaker is unable to read the disk this file is on." It would not allow me to continue and it corrupted the new file (and I was not able to recover it.) Please note, this is my 3rd release of the software and never had this problem before. After playing around, I thought maybe it had to do with the size of the file (approx 2.5MB…

My client is planning to upgrade from a WIN and Mac/Citrix/FMP V6 network to possibly OSX or Win Server plus FMP V7, probably not FMP Server as their traffic is minimal. They are also considering Developer. Question. If we have Developer and we develop Custom Functions, can we put them into the 'standard' copies of FMP? The FMI documentation implies that you can but it is rather vague. If we can, how do we get them into the standard copies?

I am sure this has been asked before. I just didn't see a post that blatantly asked, is there any way to improve Filemaker's number crunching ability. This is what I have. I have two files. The front end has a layout with fields that pull those numbers in from Datafiles. The problem is, when I go to that layout, it takes about seven seconds for everything to load. 88. After runnning some scripts I noticed that one of my tables no longer showed up in one of my portals. Going to other layouts, I see the table also does not show up in portals there either. I can go to the missing table layout, and make new records with the matching field for the relationship, but these records also do not show up in the portals. I closed the file. When reopening it, I was told I needed to recover the file. I did, but the portals still remain blank. I created a new relationship to the missing table, and created a new portal, but still the table data does not show up. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Hi, I'm not really sure where this post lives, so I'll put it here. I want to include my own help files and at the moment I use a number of html files and the Open URL command to link to various bookmarks in them. However, I thought about using the .chm format (probably Microsoft only ?). The problem with that is there appears to be no way to "Go To" a bookmark. Usually .chm files are called using a form similar to: <filename.chm>::<html file>#Bookmark. But you cannot append things to the end of a name in the Send Event command. Any ideas Cheers, Roger.

Hi, When I build a runtime, I occasionally get <No Access> in fields in layouts. I'm baffled because the privilege set has access to create, edit and delete in all tables, so it can't be that.
