I'm trying to design a layout for a database in Filemaker that will be used for making a print copy of a portion of the database. Here is the problem: One field in the database (a text field) has huge variations in how much information is stored in each record. For example, the first record might have a short phrase while the next record might have a long paragraph. What I'd like to do is to set up the layout so it resizes the box so that it isn't any longer than the length of the record being displayed. If I can't figure out a way to do this, then I need to make the field box in the layout big enough to fit the longest record, which results in LOTS of blank spac…

I have a two page db that prints to 8.5x11. The two pages print fine, however, when I print the range 1 to 1 both pages still print. Frequently I need only the first page. Any ideas here. Thanks in Advance. norm

Hello, I would like a script to open the print dialog box before printing regardless of platform so the users can make choices. My client has a variety of MACs and PCs. Good old Print[ ] opens the dialog box on the PCs but not the MACs. Couple other details... I only have a PC to test on. This client is in Connecticut and I am in Ontario. We have never had a platform problem before and we just email files back and forth. I seem to be missing something. If I use Print Setup[ ] and then Print[Perform without dialog], the user can cancel the print setup but cannot cancel the print! I was thinking the Print Setup[ ] would force it on the MACs. I have the same consistent problem when printing and its happened before. In this case I have two fields per line on a three column report. I have the fields sliding up. I have the top of the two fields aligned.On occasion the lines don't quite align and sometimes a filed is half cut off - horizontally. I tried different printer settings like 600 to 300, tried raster. In all cases I had the same problem, though on different records. I'm using a HP 5N, but it happens on my 8000 and 8100 as well. Any help would be great because I have someone that needs the report really bad. Please HELP!! Mike

I cannot get the 7th and 8th page to print anything. It prints the header and footer, but the body is blank. I moved the data out and put a black box still nothing. I even dragged the box from page 6 into page 7, still blank. What the heck is going on. It is so frustrating. I understand the printing issues with HPs, but it printed before and just stopped. When printing FileMaker reports to an HP Business Inkjet 2200 printer, served over a local Novell network, using the latest HP print driver and the latest FileMaker update, on a Dell 8300, using Windows XP, data does not print. All that prints out is the footer on some reports, or one data or text field on others. I have no problems at all printing to the HP LaserJet 4050, which is connected directly to my computer. These databases and related reports were created on a Compac system, using Windows 98, using the same printer configuration. Any suggestions on how to get my reports to print to the HP Business Inkjet printer?

Hi there, now i have one system which same as sales register system. The system will let user to key in sales and the can print the receipt in the custom paper size 8.5' x 5.5'. By the way, the system also allow user to print the sales summary report, so now the paper size will change to fanford 8.5' x 11'. I have left many posts about pages not printing correctly or missing. I now realize that Filemaker does not work well with PostScript printer drivers. I had problems on an HP8000n HP4550 HP6L HP2100 Canon A30. None printed the pages correctly. When I tried printing on a epson and a samsung printer no problems. The only thing that differed between printer brands was the layout of text on the printed copy. I am also trying to create pdfs as well. But it happens that acrobat uses postscript printer drivers. This has really got me stumped. I'm runing Windows version 2000 Professional, FileMaker Developer version 6.0v4, working on files being served from FileMaker Server version 5.5, printing from other systems running FileMaker 5.5 produces the same problem. If I am at 100% percent view, the filemaker file prints out of alignment. The text boxes which are above a text field look perfectly lined up only when zoomed in to 150% or more. Very Strange.

Is it possible to allow a user to select which one of two (or more) fields prints on a particular layout? Thanks!

One of the cool features of OSX is that you can create Presets in the Print Window. I've tried creating presets in Filemaker for Printing Current Record and Printing Records Being Browsed. Problem is, the presets don't work in Filemaker. Has anyone found a way to make them work? Also, does anyone know if there is a way to get the Filemaker print info to show up closer to the top of the list in the Print Window of OSX. having the application page show up toward the bottom is quite inconvenient. hi, i'm having trouble getting a dymo label printer 320 to work with filemaker pro 6.0v4 on x.2.6. it just prints out blank labels. we have installed the latest printer drivers for the dymo label printer. we have tried with a new file, which doesn't work, and with other applications (ms word), which does work. any ideas as to what could be wrong? thanks, jd.

Using a PC with FP5, is there a way to print out relationships and value lists? Also is there a way to print all scripts without a new page for each script definition? I can print to a text file, but I believe it would be a lot of work to reformat it as I have 96 scripts.

Probably a basic question, but it has me baffled. How do I print just the record on screen, in the current layout? This would be via an automated button. Do I have to script a search to find just the one record of interest, or is there a way to print the record on the screen. At present, I'm printing the first record of a series of records, but not the record on the screen.

Hi All, Here we go... 2 PCs (1 Win98; 1 XP) on a peer to peer network. XP machine is the host for fm file (FM pro 5.5). Using network printer: Brother HL-1270N Problem: If i set-up my printing script (Print restore, no dialog) with these options: lower tray & portrait on the XP machine they do not work properly on the win 98 machine. On the other hand if i change the settings on the win 98 machine to proper ones then that messes-up the settings that were ok on the XP machine!! But in order to print both machines use the same printing script! (or do they? in a network, does FM open a copy of the host file or just a link to the file on …

This is something that has regularly been a problem with Filemaker. On some reports, I will get a single body line where only part of the data is printed, for example , the bottom 1/3 or 1/4. This happens at the same place on each page. All other body lines print perfectly well. This same thing has occurred in the past on other systems with different printers, so is not an isolated occurrence. Any ideas welcome Andrew Bruno

On occasion the first line of a text box will not print. Everything else on the layout prints except the first line of text. Even the perview looks OK. And it's an intermittant problem to boot. Help! I am having problems printing to a local printer (Epson C62) connected to the USB port of my host machine, on a network of 4 PCs running windows xp, fmp 6v4. Every now and then it just crashes when instructed to print. Is there a problem when using printers from the same PC that is hosting the database files? Could it be an overload of resources, or is there another explanation? I use the Productive Computing Plug-In to switch printers. The machine does not crash when doing anything else. It is very stable. Also printing the same task from another networked PC does not cause a crash! Simon

Hi all: I'm in the process of converting a site from mixed pc&mac to all macs. One of the PCs prints bills of lading in triplicate via an Epson FX-880 tractor feed dot matrix printer. This is an impact/pin printer (so it prints onto the carbons of the triplicate form, which is a standard bill of lading form) connected directly to the PC via a serial port. I've been looking for a similar type of printer to use with a mac (and I can use an old mac, system 8 if needed) but can't find anything at all. First things first, longtime database geek, first time FM user. Inherited an app to manage wirelist, along with the template files used to construct tables. I've input data to our facility's wirelist and now (don't know specifically what I did) labels don't print correctly. Template file still prints correctly, but any records I import (as .fp5 records) won't. On the import, I've unchecked any fields having to do with report/label settings, yet the corruption still occurs. Hi there, I've got a little problem, but I think there's an easy solution. I'm working with a database with different addresses. I've made a layout with several records (adresses) on 1 page. However, when a new street begins I would like him to start a new page. So, for example if I can put 30 records on 1 page and the first street only has 10 records, the other should stay empty and on the second page should begin the new street. I think it has something to do with layout parts, but just can't find it. Thx in advance

I have just gone through a large portion of this forum looking at oddball print-spacing problems. The reason is that I recently encountered a really weird problem. A layout consists of (roughly) three rows of fields - two records per page. The data in the third row on the second (bottom) record prints with just the tip of the data showing above the bottom border. This happens on my cusomer's machine but not on mine. Modifying the vertical alignment (as recommended elswhere in the forum) had no effect. I have created a sub summary report that is broken down by year and name. Some of the names are blank and my sub summary displyas a blank field with a 0 next to the set of blank names. I have been trying to print a layout that has a header footer and 8 pages of information. I originally started with linked word documents and when printed on page seven I would get BIG bold garbaled garbage. When I put the information directly into fm as text when I print the layout all I get on page 7 and 8 are the headers and footers but none of the body. Please Help it is driving me insane. I have a multi-user Filemaker system (Mac OS9) where two different types of printer are used, Epson 760 and HP deskjet 843C. I have set up separate scripts that perform page setup for landscape and portrait modes, making sure that the page setup information is stored by 'replacing' the page setup information. The problem is that if I set these on the Mac with the HP printer attached, they work OK, but won't then work on the 760, where both scripts result in a portrait orientation. If I 'replace' the page setup in each script on a Mac with the EPSON 760 attached, the page orientation then doesn't change on the HP Deskjet if I run the different scripts. Is this a …

I am using FM 5.5 on a windows system. When I try to print to my HP Laser, the fields move. I have a text box in the back with the main layout and fields on top of that. They look perfectly laid out on screen, but when printed move all over the place. I think the spacing of the text box text is changing when printed. I got around the problem, by individually moving each field(and after wasting almost a ream of paper front and back) it is now posistioned correctly. But a fix would be nice for the future. Hi, On OS 10.2, I print out with OKI laser and Canon bubblejet. The layout does not syncronize some of the fields printed. Some field are offset from the other, about 5-10 pixels up-left differs. One is more right than the other though. I have no clue what this could mean? Anyone, please?

OK, I think I've narrowed it down a bit. I'm trying to print labels from a table. Using the file that's a 'template' for our wirelist database, I can print fine. Making a copy of the template, I can print fine. BUT... If I _add_ records to the copy, originals in the file print fine, but my additions are all out of whack. SO... Hi, I know this is possible on a Mac, because I have gone to great lengths to get it to work. I can have a button that prints something on one printer and another button which prints something else on another printer, totally automatically, without any other user input. I do this with AppleScripts called from Filemaker Is this possible on a Windows machine? I have a four page layout with container fields (containing pdf forms) set to slide up. page 1 has a text field on top of the container, also set to slide up. when i go to preview mode, even if there is no content on the text field and container field in page 1, the other container fields are blocked by the place where the text field is, and leaves a gap. When I remove the text field everything works fine, but the text field has to be there! Tried all sliding options but no go! I'm working for the first time on a network with 2 printers. Both are HP 2300 dual tray printers, connected direct to the server. Each file in FM6 (Windows) has 8 standard simple scripts for printing ; Tray 1 portrait current record, etcetera, for each combination of tray orientation and current / browsed records. I am having problems forcing filemaker to select the proper print setup for each user in a networked environment using Filemaker 5.5. I am selecting the correct printer using the Change Printer Plug-in. However, rather than using the default address labels we are using Diskette labels. It doesn't seem like grouped objects slide together when printing or in preview mode. I would like a group of fields and their labels to slide up together based only on what is directly above them. When I try this they slide up different degrees and get out of alignment. The alternative, to slide up based on "all above" isn't much help because I have other non-sliding text and lines off to the side which stops any sliding. Is there a way to make grouped objects slide as a group based only on what is directly above them?

The company I'm with reproduces medical credentialing forms for many companies. We use FM6 and PCs. 98% of the forms we have uses an on-screen layout and fields that print out just fine. The other 2% of the forms are copywrite-restricted, so we can't reproduce the pages on-screen. We have to have the fields placed exactly right on the layout, then load an original application into the printer, and print the fields onto the paper. So, it looks like the application was filled out with a typewriter. This works fine. So here's a question i can't seem to find an answer to after a cursory search. I have a join table that i'm using to print a list of results, it consists of a body with the records, and a footer with a couple summary fields of the data on that page (total wages paid, etc). Now this all works great, except on the last page of any printout, there's this huge gap between the last record and the footer. Now, i know i can't have the footer slide up to meet the last record...but is there any other way to achieve the same effect? It really would make the output much more attractive. I have Client_Name, Client_Number and Volume that need to be on the top of each label. The rest of the label then needs to be the list of files that are in that volume. does the 65k limit restricted to actual characters or will it also include spaces within the body of text?

I have a printing dilemma. In my contact data there is the ambiguous notes field. The problem is at times we need to print full contact data including all history, which means I'd like all the data within the notes field to print. However it can at times be pages long and the field does not allow for this kind function ( b/c I can't predetermine how many pages it may be, and with the 65K limit it's very relative). what kind of field must I replace the existing "notes" field, so that when we go to print it will continue to print until the full contents of the notes field ( and of course whatever else is designated on the layout) to print?!?! I'm having a quirky problem in not being able to get the Title Header of a report to reduce in size when the field at the very bottom of the Title Header shrinks to the amount of data in it. I also have a horizontal line in the Title Header directly beneath the field, and this line slides up as expected when the field shrinks. In the sliding options for the field and the horizontal line I have "Also reduce the size of the enclosing part" checked. Hi All, I wish to be able to preview a letter before printing. I have set up the to, from, date ok but the body text only shows to the field limit. If the body text is greater than the length of the field it cuts off the rest of the text. I have also tried the body text as a merge field with the same result. After the body text I also want to be able to show from and a couple more fields which should shift upwards depending upon the length of the body text. If the text is more than 1 page this needs to be catered for. Is someone able to show how to achieve. Many thanks, Paul

I selected all the fields to sliding up. I set the text to the left-top. I tried "all above" and "Only directly above". I tried to check and uncheck "Also reduce the size of the enclosing part". Machines running Mac OSX 10.2.6 Hi, We have been developing a large DB system using FileMaker Developer 6, it uses multiple Dot Matrix printers which I got to work perfectly by writing CUPS printer drivers. everything was working wonderfully, until we come to install on a client machine running FileMaker Pro 6, and from this machine FileMaker Pro will NOT print to the locally connected USB Dot Matrix printers. it doesn't actually send a job to the Print Center. Hi all... Here's my problem. My database is on a Mac using OS Server 10.2.6 and Filemaker Server 5.5. Three client machines all using OS 10.2.6 and Filemaker 6. The database is quite small - only 1 mb. One of the client machines was used to move a field within the database. After this has happened the client machine is unable to print from anything handled by Filemaker server. It CAN print from Filemaker DBs inside itself. The OTHER client machines print fine from FM Server DBs. I have a report that has several subsummaries and a repeating body part. As it stands, my layout will page-break in middle of a repeating body part. however, i would like for the ENTIRE body part to stick with the subsummary part on a page. if it's not possible, then FileMaker should break right before the subsummary part so the subsummary part and the body part will continue onto the next page. is this possible? and how would i achieve something like that? thank you for your kind help! -khai

All prints OK except for record # 48 (which is at the half way mark of the 2nd column), for some reason this record (and i tried with various data) prints below its own field border for every field. Hello all- Hopefully someone can help me with this. I have a big text field on my layout (a form letter with merge fields). This is followed by a container field which holds the signature for the letter. I have attached a screenshot of what my form letter looks like in preview mode, as well as what it looks like when printed to pdf, which is the same as how it looks if printed directly from filemaker. Basically the signature "moves." Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this? I know I could just move the signature up (to overlap with the body of the letter) and get it to print correctly, but this becomes a major pain if there are any changes in the text of the …

All my previous systems have been written for small networks with only 1 printer. My current system will be used on a network of about 8 PCs with 2 laser printers. All printing will be on A4 paper. I simply ( hopefully!) want the printer to be determined by the identity of the PC (I.e. PC upstairs uses printer upstairs. All printing is driven by scripts and users do not have access to print dialog boxes. Each file has 4 master print scripts ( print current / portrait, current / landscape etc. Many thanks. Andrew

PRT-LetterPortrait1copy (1 copy = bottom Tray) PRT-LetterPortrait4copies (top tray) PRT-LetterLandscape1copy These all work fine on my current system. I set them up thru File->prinSetup... then went into each script and save (replace) to update to the proper setup. All is great so far... Right now when I am printing a page of labels that my previous programmer set up for us, and I hit the PRINT button that he put in, I get the familiar Print Dialog Box that comes up for all our other programs, but if I forget to specify only to print the first page, well it just prints & prints & prints many pages really fast. We then have to try and get it out of the print queue and/or shut down the printer in order to stop it. Hello, We have a hp office jet printer that when printing records from a Filemaker database is very slow. All other apps print just fine, in fact Word docs print blazingly fast. This only occurs when printing a specific form in filemaker. There are 42 fields on this form and really nothing special that would would make it soooo slow. I have tried Increasing the printer memory but that did not help. Any Ideas? Thanks, Michael

Hi All, Having read some of the pasts posts, i am not sure of my options so here goes (at the risk of asking what has already been answered). I am using FM 5.5v2 on PC. What am i doing wrong... I have created several scripts for various printing options. Legal or Letter, Landscape or Portrait, Upper or Lower tray. All the various combos seem to work, but none of them will remember the number of copies. How come i can set most of the other features of my Brother HL-1270N network printer but NOT the copies. Using WinXP FMP6v2 and either a Lexmark laser printer or an HP inkjet I lose 1 row of entries when I print labels. I am trying to print 3 columns and 10 rows per page. I get a page with 10 rows but page 2 comes out *after* skipping a row of 3 entries! i.e. the first page has entries 1-30 then the second page has 34-64. Either printer is set up fine for any other apps. They print to the bottom of the page if needed.

Hi, We Have a Windows 2000 network running FMP Server 5 and FMP 5.5v2 clients. We have created a layout that produces a certificate for our students and merges their details into it. However when I print to a HP LaserJet PS 2100TN it works. When I send it to a Tektronix Phaser 850DN printer it will not. What happens is that it gets sent to the print queue and looks as though it has printed but nothing comes out! I have looked at the Windows 2000 server print log files and it too thinks that the document was printed. I am baffeled. This Tektonix Printer has never caused a problem before. System: Windows 98 SE with FileMaker Pro 6.04 Problem: Whenever Print Setup is opened (or called out as a Script Step,) the user gets the following error message; "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down, etc." FileMaker shuts down, and if it is opened again, the splash screen shows up briefly and then the same error message shows up. Is there any way to print out a report efficiently with a field that varies in length? What I have in mind is printing a name, and then print a field next to it that may have from one to fifteen lines of text. If there is only one line in the text field, then the report would print the next name on the following line. In other words, the length of the text field determines when to print the next record.

I'm trying to arrange a layout to print a report, sorting values by department, in multiple columns, to converve paper space. Problem is, I can only print across first, then down, which doesn't look right since everybody starts reading down one column, then goes to the top of the next one only to realize that there is a problem with alphabetically sorted data. If I arrange the layout to print first across, then down, I can't arrange sub-headers and sub-footers for each department being reported and printed. (I need the sub-headers and sub-footers to run from end to end across the A4 sheet, you see!). Please, report-savvies, help! TIA Alex.

I've got a Windows PC in a networked environment (FM Server, 15 clients, been running for 18 months) and when a certain script runs, it prints two different things on two different printers, then sends a fax (through WinFax, another printer in Windows' eyes). The problem is, I was using ProPrint, which worked fine, but we had to replace one of the printers with a new one (new driver, too) and now ProPrint has stopped working. I thought, to hell with ProPrint, I'll just use the Print Setup step in ScriptMaker and deal with it by hand, but Print Setup just doesn't stick. Hi. I have a multi-page report that usually runs 2 to 3 pages. The report contains many variable length, multi-line text fields (all in the Body). A single field can vary from 1 line to 50 lines. Each of these fields is separated from the next by a header-like line. Each of these varible length is made very long on the layout to make sure all lines of a long value will print. I use Sliding to eliminate blank space being left when a field's value is short. The problem is that often a line gets sliced thru horizontally. The top piece on one page and the bottom part of each character on the following page. How do I make Filemaker break cleanly between lines? Doug

I am printing various sections of a report. Eventually, this will be duplicated double-sided, and each section needs to start on a RIGHT-hand page (odd page number). It's always been simplest just to find one section at a time and then print it, setting the initial page number in "filemaker options" in the print driver. Today I produced a pdf of a 14 page, legal size spreadsheet like report from Filemaker. As usual, it was very lary, 1.2 MB, and slow to upload via dial-up. One recipient brought it up in Reader and tried to print it. It didn't print. I had him initiate print again, from Reader, and had him bring up the Printer status screen. It showed the file being prepared for the printer growing by 25 MB per page. At 245 MB his old Win98 computer froze. I have created a relational database that tracks the travel of different people on a theatrical show. One database holds air travel info, another hotel info, a third handles car info and then a master DB which contains all the traveler's personal details. I want to be able to print a one page summary of all the travel details for each person, but I am not sure how to approach it. I view all this info through portals in browse mode from the Main DB. Should I just try to set up portals on my print page and do it that way. Is there any way to create summary layouts in all the different databases and then merge them into one report for each traveler. My ultimate …

The last 2 pages of my 10 page report won't print on my new HP laserjet 450 printer. ONLY the header will print, none of the body of the last 2 pages. I am running XP pro, I have the latest driver, Times new Roman font, all margins appear correct. I isolated the last 2 pages in a separate layout and tried to print them, they still won't print - only the header will print again. Even if I tell the printer to print only pages 9 and 10, it won't work. It prints fine on my Cannon printer. I have tried the new HP printer on 2 computers, one brand new and it does the same thing on both computers. It prints normally from all other applications. Any ideas?:

Hi all, This is probalby a question that's been answered many times before, or maybe nobody else even needs to ask it, but here it goes: One text field in my database is sometimes large, and sometimes small. With a vertical scroll bar, it's no problem at all, even if it goes to several pages. But when printing time comes, how do I cause it to print all the contents of the field, which can sometimes be several pages, sometimes only a paragraph. Thank you for any help. Caroline

I am sure this has been raised before but I can't find it in FM Forums. I have helped set up a number of reports at schools, and in some cases they switch between laser printers and deskjets. They are always set to A4, but they set up differently on the page and sometimes print off the page etc. How do I set pages, so that no matter what printer they face, A4 prints properly on the page. Hi ya all, I am totally new to using FileMaker, making just my first steps into using it. Another colleague of mine is having a problem with the printing of mail merged documents in version 5 and I would like to ask the question of the limitation that this feature has. Is there a limit for 9999 records to be printed or no limit? Is is possible that this limit is a Printer limitation and not a FileMaker Pro limitation? I am working on getting my first db to output invoices, Orders etc all with portal lines. I'm use Filemaker solution framework sample invoices to get an idea of how to setup layouts. I notice that all these sample reports have colored rectangles with text reading "Header 118px""Body 28px""footer 29px". What is the "px" notation? Why don't they print on report? Are they only for helping to show the parts? Also I don't see portals used to show line items like I would use on the regular invoice layout for the screen? I have 16 rectangular labels on an A4 paper. There are 8 rows and 2 columns on each page. Now, I have to print on those labels, one record fit into one label. What's the best way to do that ? Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm created a layout(form letter). I have text with several fields over the top. When I go to the preview mode, the text in most of the fields disappears. When it is printed the field text is there but not aligned as it is in the browse mode. I don't have any sliding or do not print objects set. This seems very strange. I have a stand alone runtime distributed to about 80 users. For some users, the first page of a two page report is printing blank, for others it's OK. I developed the original in FM 5.5 and created the runtime in developer 6. (I have also tried a version in developer 5) -same problem. It only seems to be an issue with Epson inkjet printers. What have I done wrong? Any ideas as to how to resolve this.. and, if so, can the solution be distributed to 80 or so users scattered around the country

OSX (jaguar) and FMP 6.0.4 Printing to HP 8150dn when printing the it won't print about .625 of an inch at the bottom it cut's it off every time. I have the print driver setup to edge-to-edge printing but that dosen't seem to matter. When previewing the file even the PDF of it cuts it off as well. the other three edges seem fine at .250 just the bottom is messing up. any one else have this issue? Any Solutions?

This problem occurs both in the printout and in preview mode: I'm having a problem with some objects (in this case, a text label) splitting across two pages. I switched to os x from os 9 and now most of the pages in my database print blank, but if I print the same page in os 9 is works perfect. I have manually printed and used scripts no difference. I created a new database and it printed fine and i then copied some of my layouts from old to new and they would not print either. You would think Apple would get off their butts and fix printing problems with OS X since they tout it as the best ever OS and it is but simple things like printing keep many from making the switch. Hello, I've had a problem using FMP 5.5 and OS X. Basically all EPS graphics on my layouts print bitmapped. I have done some homework on this issue, I've got all the latest versions and when I open the exact same DB file using the classic version of FMP, it prints fine. The problem isn't the graphics. I was lucky enough to go to the recent Macworld Expo SF and I cornered someone from FileMaker and asked him about this issue.
