I love rumors as much as the next guy, but this one hits kinda close to home. Ran accross this tidbit this morning that FileMaker was being moved back in-house at Apple. http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=115 Seems kind of far-fetched, but with all the buzz about changes @ Apple and what the WWDC will bring @ the end of this month I wondered if anyone else has heard anything recently about this? Seems to me there was a "Microsoft is buying FileMaker!" scare not so long ago. Not that this would be a bad thing, and I definately don't want to fan any fires, just thought it would make for interesting DevCon conversation this year at Pheonix. thanks

Currently we use FM Pro for managing and billing a special needs handicapped transportation company. By October of this year I need to start submitting claims in Hippa Compliant X12 format for batch submissions (multiple claims). Does anybody now any reference points to finding supplemental software, or otherwise, to convert my billing info so that it is in compliance? Any and all help will be appreciated!

I am wondering if anyone has experienced problems having a Windows based machine, or a Mac with OS 9 host a file, and then try to open that hosted file as a guest in an OS X environment. I am getting multi-user issue, stating that the file is a single user. I have rechecked, the multiuser connections, the TCP/IP, and everything is correct. So why can't the OS X get into the file as a guest? thanks for any help, paul

I am trying to get Excel to access data in an FM database via ODBC. Both the applications are on the same machine, no network, no server. In OS9 this was possible & easy using Intersolve ODBC drivers supplied by FM. In OSX it seems less straightforward. The DataDirect text driver supplied in the FM6 installation has no info as to how it should be configured, and using this alone (with its corresponding configuration app) Excel does not recognise that ODBC is even installed..... Howerer, using Openlink's dirvers (and configuration app) I can get Excel to recognise ODBC, open Query and request a DSN. Problem is how to configure the driver, be it either a generic on…

I'm curious about whether any of you can give me any feedback on how fast Filemaker performs on OSX compared to OS9. I have OSX 10.0.4 which was shipped with my G4. I have never upgraded to a newer version because I still mainly run OS9. When I run FM 5.5 on OSX it seems to run about 4 times slower than it does on OS9.2. This applies to all operations: finds, big replace operations, scripts etc. This really worries me. Are the newer versions of OSX faster? I hope so. I can't imagine having to eventually migrate to a new OS that performs so badly compared to the old one. Is FM6 faster than FM5.5?

Hardware: Imac G4 700, G3 350, IBook SE DV Software: OSX 10.2.4, FMPro 5.5 (also tried FMPro 6 Trial version) Soooo... we have little network set up, the Imac being the host computer and the others connecting to it as clients. Aside from speed issues this has always worked like a charm. We have been using a local Cable service thorugh which we also connect to the host DB via TCP/IP. Just yesterday we switched to a faster xDSL line, got a new modem, hooked it up to the router, and here's where the strange behaviour started: The host DB on the IMac takes much much longer to start up, something like 5-10 minutes or so (previously: about 20secs). If we host…

I noticed that when I double-click a FileMaker v5.5 database that resides on the Desktop of my OS X client computer, it launches FM but doesn't open the database. If I place an alias of a database on the Desktop and move the database to a nested folder, works fine. Anyone else notice this Desktop No Launch issue?

OSX 10.2.4; FMPro 6.04; I've installed it 2wice. I've run a Disk Utilities, Repair, repair Permissions, fsck, etc. Yet when I open a FMPro shared database being server from a FMPro server it open fine. I do a search for a particular record; it finds it fine. But if I select "Print" it begins the script, starts to change layouts and crashes ("Unexpectedly quit"). I've repeated this as root as well as another user. It is not able to be replicated on other stations. Is this a FMPro issue or a Mac issue? Sounds like FMPro to me?? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I've got filemaker server running on linux... Connected to it are a mac osx, windows nt, windows xp computers, and one mac performa 6200. (All have fmpro 5.5) I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for enhancing performance on the mac performa (operating system 8.1). The only program I want to work on performa is filemaker 5.5. All my databases are connected via relationships and menus and there are numerous scripts that run. On the performa, it is pretty slow. The performa has 64 mb memory, os 8.1, dave, and filemaker. I dont know what virtual memory cache RAM disk extensions allocated memory for filemaker 5.5 should be set to…

I am building a data base for a local Hospice Services provider (as a volunteer). I have been able to design on my Mac, and transfer the files to my laptop PC without any problems. However, when I tried to load the files onto one of their office PCs, I found that some of the layouts had "rearranged" themselves. Specifically, on a layout the graphic elements (a bunch of check boxes on a form), and all of the fields were offset about half an inch towards the top of the page. I also found that the colors of variousl elements were much darker than the ones on my Mac (or on my laptop). I know I could use merge fields to keep those in their places, but why do the graphics…

I have a user who needs to access files being hosted on both FM 4 and now FM 5. We are installing FM 6 to get to the FM 5 files. One of our tech people told me that "they" (?) don't advise running two different versions of any software on OS-X. Of course, the user runs the FM 4 in classic mode and would run the FM 6 under X. Or I suppose she could run them both in classic. I have 4,5 and 6 on my OS9 client and don't have any trouble. Is there anything to this, or is it hogwash?

I have a solution with 30+ files. To host this solution on a network, I use an 'open all files script' at startup. The main file also has a closing script which closes all files. So now I access the solution on a guest machine and when I want to quit on the guest machine, the closing script seems to take forever, about a minute or more just to close the files even if they haven't even been accessed. Why does it take that long and is there anything I can do to speed this up?

Last week the Server that carried a Filemaker Database crashed. The two people that use the file are a MAC and a PC. The PC does not seem to be having problems since the crash but the MAC is in trouble. When the MAC tries to host the file, it crashes. We have tried recovering the file, cloning it, etc, etc. When the PC Hosts the file the MAC does not crash right away, but eventually it does. I have not seen anyone else mention this particular problem and Filemaker's website does not list anything as well. I check the TCP/IP connection and its still on. Any thoughts, my IT department isn't the brightest when it comes to cross platform issues. …

Hi, I'm working with FMD6 - trying to share files over my local network. I'm using OS 10.2.3 and I usually have my firewall switched on by default. I was trying to share files and getting nowhere until I realised that the OSX firewall was on and it was probably blocking the Filemaker port... I switched it off and it works !! So, what I need to know, and I can't find this in Filemaker, is what port number should I allow in my firewall to allow Filemaker to share files locally? I have looked in the prefs/application/plugins but I can't click the configure button on anything except the web sharing - which I have configured OK... Is there somethi…

Tried installing FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my new PowerMac G4 loaded to the max with 2 gigs of RAM running Jaguar. The install stops right at the beginning with a dialog box stating that this computer doesn't have the minimum amount of RAM of 8 megs! I haven't had enough time to try some other options, like taking out 2 memory chips to see if 1 gig of RAM qualifies as more than 8 megs. Neither did I try installing in System 9. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this situation.

I am hosting a FM solution on an OSX machine. I have already created a applescript that, when launched, opens all my FM files. Is there a way to: 1) Somehow set particular times that 3 different applescripts will run. 2) The first script will close all the open FM files, avoiding the message about connected users, or in other words, shutting the files wether there are any connected users or not. 3) Have an applescript that copies the files from a local volume to a remote server volume so that the server will be able to back them up. 4) The timed event from above would then run my already existing applescript that opens all my FM files. Hi, I'm trying to host a series of dbases using Filemaker Pro 6v1 (single license) on a G4 running OS 10.2.2 and I just can't get access to them from our other machines in the office. I currently have an old G3/300 running the dbases using FM6 and OS 10.1.5 and everything runs fine. All the other client machines are running FM 5.5 and OS 9.2.2. I've tried to match the settings of the G3/300 to the G4 and FM. I've made sure no other process or app is using port 80...., the network protocol is TCP/IP, ETC. Is there an issue with Jaguar (OS10.2) and FM or has some network thing changed or.... Anyone have a similar problem as this?

We have just implemented FMP6 on a Mac wireless network, with about a dozen files served by FM Server 5.5 on a dedicated machine. We've noticed that as we're working on the hosted files, our work is interrupted very frequently by automatic sorts that lock us out of the program while they're proceeding. Is there any way to minimize this? Could it be a function of the cache size set at the client desktop level. Thanks. PS: All clients are running OS X.1.5, as is the server.

Hi folks, This is not so much related to File Maker, but it is to MAC OS X warning: I'm very new to Samba and this question may sound completely pathetic, but I'll take that chance. I understand that both W2K Pro and OS X incorporate an smbclient in them (OS X understands NetBios names). What I don’t get is that Samba being a client/server protocol needs a smbserver on the other site to agree to share resourses, right. Than how does OS X workstation directly acceses Win2K pro workstation when both are smbclients? Thanks B

There is a cronic shortage of ERD software for Mac, but I've finally found an excellent program to design my dattabase with. OmniGraffle. Theres quite a few other programs that are more general purpose that can be searched for on Versiontracker.com but I havn't found one close to OmniGraffle. It has got the Falkaholic seal of Approval.

Hi, I am running FileMaker Pro Server 5.5 on a G4 under OS 10.1.5. Everything is working fine for offsite access via TCP/IP, but for local users the Local Host option is blank. In other words the served databases do not show up. Local users seem to only be able to access the server via the Internet. What am I doing wrong? Is this a function of FMP Server 5.5, the OS, or what? Also, I am used to using FMP Server on OS9. On OS X it seems very different. I cannot for the life of me find the old familiar File/Folders/Guests window. Did FileMaker, Inc. remove these vital windows from Server on X or am I missing something? Thanks for the help, -Jedi

I know nothing about MAC's and I need to find about 25 staff's MAC systems, to determine whether they will need to upgrade (?) to run FM Pro 6. What questions do I need to ask each person about their specific computer to be sure they are compatible. Do MAC's have the same needs as PC's? I know what a PC needs (RAM, Windows vs. etc) but I'm in the dark on MAC's. Do they need OSx? RAM size? Some staff will be accessing through web from home, so I need to be able to tell them if they have to upgrade in any way.

I've been running FMP 6.0v1 under OS 10.1.x and recently upgraded to 10.2. FMP 6 seems to run without problems. I had a need to open a database solution in FM Developer 5.5 (since there is no 6) in order to export a DDR file for analysis. Filemaker Developer 5.5 failed to launch with an "unexpected error occurred: code 1000" error. A copy of FMP 5.5 unlimited on this same machine fails with the same error. After re-installing Developer, it opened correctly and I was able to export the DDR file. I then re-launched FMP 6, did some code fixes, closed 6 and tried to launch Developer 5.5. I now get the same "code 1000" error I got prior to the re-install. I'll re-…

I need to build/Share a database. I've got FM5 (Mac and PC) and one other user here, out of the 4 that will need to share this data, as an older version. 1. With so few users, do I need to get FM Server, or can we simply set up one machine to host the data? The usage will be very low, with each photographer updating data one record at a time as a shot is completed, maybe 10 times a day. 2. Will the web companion allow us to build a solution on one system and have that host it as web pages to the others...or is that worth more trouble than a few CAL's would cost us to do it the other way? Thanks thrill seekers!

For all those whose posts I've read here, who are having problems with 5.5 having updated their system to X.1.5 - I got it sorted, finally. The problem was the preferences file for FMPro. I just deleted it and bingo - now FMPRo starts up, just as before. This is in the "Your Username"/Library/Preferences/FileMaker Pref. Folder, not the general root Preferences folder. It's not a standard text file so you can't edit it or see what's wrong with it. It would be nice if you could... I guess the update to X.1.5 or the networking update changed some features of networking, so when FMPro tried to access the TCP/IP network, it found something which didn't fit any more. …

I'm looking for basic stuff, like how to uninstall applications, basic file management, and maintenance. Does anyone know any URL's they would like to direct me to? Thanks. Paul

Hi, I'm using FMP5.5 on OSX 10.1.1 and have a problem where Filemaker will die when opening a file and give a EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS error. Certain files will open without a problem, but others just kill the app before it opens them. I fired up 5.5 on my Windows machine (didn't want to have to go back...) and all files open without a hitch, so I imagine the error doesn't lie in a bad relationship or erroneous calc field. I had a similar error when I tried to Print Preview from an open file and FMP didn't like my OSX HP printer drivers. It would die every time I tried to preview, but worked fine when I uninstalled the hp software. Any ideas/suggestion…

I'm trying to view my web pages served by filemaker without any kind of network connection and I'm running into problems. This is no problem under Mac OS 9. I simply enter some static IP, launch filemaker, a browser, and type in the local static address. Everything runs well. However, I can't seem to get this to work under Mac OS X. The browser never manages to connect -- as soon as I plug in to my network, even still just accessing the localhost, it suddenly works. Anyone know a work around? I'd like to be able to work while I'm on the airplane, etc... (w/o switching back to OS 9) Thanks! Jeffrey

I am getting a Javascript error (Could not process the request due to a syntax error) when trying to connect to a FMP database using Omniweb. it happens while I am trying to load the index page, not processing a find. works great with all other browsers, so I am guessing it has to do with Omniweb. anyone aware of problems with omniweb? thanks

I have an application written in FM 4 running under OS 8.1 which included a container field for a Quicktime movie. The original quicktime movies occupy 7 CDs and when the user clicked on the container, the system would prompt "Please insert CD-6" (or whatever the CD was called). Running the same application under OS X generates a different error message: now it says "I can't find file 'filename'. Please locate it" and it opens the standard open file dialogue. This is not helpful if you have 7 CDs to search. FM must preserve the path information for the container object somewhere, to make available to OS 8. If I can make that visible by copying it into a field, t…

FileMaker is an Apple susidiary, yet OS X 10.1 breaks several features in this great program. I am no talking about the absence of the toolbars (a yippee yippee Windows sop I can do without), but something much more essential to developing FileMaker solutions. I am a FileMaker developer and after updating to OS X 10.1 I can no longer copy and paste when in calculation dialog boxes. FileMaker tech support tells me that the bug is in OS X, not FileMaker. What a pain this is when editing a number of calculations or script steps containing calculations that are similar enough to copy, paste and change the variable necessary. So I am now launching the Classic version to …

I am running a Database with 10 Files on a Server(3.0 v4German)and 3 FM4.0 v2 German und one FM 4.03 English(for programming, its easier to do this in English, the German translations are quite awfull). Last August I got a Cube, last month I got 1 new IMAC. These 2 Mac termiate the connection to the server und freeze after a while. The server notes "cube(imac) doesn t answer, connection is cut.". Relunching the Filemaker with Apple, control and esc FM will work a while and freeze again. [ April 19, 2002, 09:20 AM: Message edited by: macgyn ]

Has anyone tried to benchmark the latest crop of G4's or any other computers running FMP? Any link to a page would be great! I really need to know if a Dual G4 will be significantly faster than a single, and or if OSX will run faster than OS9, etc. thanks Chris

On some days, when the computer is feeling more temperamental than other days, when we try and open our main database, a message pops up " 'Client gen info' is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network" The server *is* on the network, and our way round it is to open it through filemaker, via clicking on 'host'. This always works, so it's not a huge problem, just abit annoying. Especially when you have to do the same for all the related databases which open with it. Our office has 5 client iMacs working on 1 server iMac, connected via TCP/IP (although the same thing used to happen when we we…

I use a Windows platform for development. If I were to write a (brief) user guide for my app in MS Word, how would I connect it (or fold it into) to the app as a pop-up help screen? Making it a part of the app is preferable, because then it would work on a Mac.

I've been running DB files on FM 5 UL on a G4 server. Some are accessed both via the web (using Webstar/Lasso) and FM clients. I have put aliases of all the currently active DB files in the Startup folder so if I have to do a server restart, they open back automatically. I am migrating the DB files over to a new additional G4 running FM 5.5 Server, and opening them on the original FM UL copy on the old server for web access. I've run across a problem, maybe because I'm not particularly technical, with the new aliases I created. I created them, moved them through my own workstation desktop (because sharing is off on both servers) and they don't work because i…

1) I want to create a three level password system for a peer to peer FileMaker network solution. Does the password level of the person who opens the solution on the file host determine access of guests who access the solution subsequently? i.e. if a level 2 person opens the solution first, can a level 1 user login with greater access? 2) If a level 3 user logs in with access to only 2 of the 6 files in the solution, will the relational data still appear in the accessable files even though the user does not have priveliges to open the parent file? Any insight would be wonderful. ~Dennis

Installed OS 10.1.2 and when I launched the OS 9 native version of FMPro v5.5 instead of it opening it classic, it just crashes. I then installed the OS X native version and all was fine. However, like most intelligent sys admins, after I experimented for exposure, I went back to OS 9. Now when I double-click a FMPro db on my desktop, it produces a bogus error about incorrect installation, missing system components and insufficient memory. If I launch FMPro and do a File:Open, no problems. Obviously the OS X version is causing the OS 9 version to misbehave. Anyone know if this is a known issue or am I special and will have to deal with it accordingly?

I am using a FM5 solution for document management by importing a referrence for scanned documents into a containor field. These cannot be used for "find" so the identifying data (used to find the document) needs to be entered manually. Can OCR'd scanned documents be entered into a text field that can then be indexed for "find"? If so, any suggestions on such a good scanner and OCR application. My Umax Astra MX3 is rather slow with 20 sec per scan and the OCR is useless.

However we want remote access for our teachers from home and FM tells me I need to do something to Port 5003... manuualy unblock it or some such thing... essentially at the moment when online at home through remote access, FM can't find the host file when you click on "Locate Specific host" and input the IP address Thanks... We have been using FM Pro on our Macs for many years now. We have about 10 computers networked (ethernet), running FM Pro 3.0v5. Recently, we've been having problems while clicking a "print" button to print an invoice. The button is a simple "change layout and print script." One computer in particular will crash when that button is clicked. We just got a new iMac to replace the one that was crashing, and it also crashes. It is an intermittent problem and the computer is fine otherwise. There is no other software running on this new computer (ie other extensions, etc that might interfere). Any ideas?: Mike

In MacOS it seems that you cannot get the value list that is attached to a field formatted as "menu" to display, unless you explicitly click into the field. In does not display if you tab into it, and into doesn't display if you go to the field through a Set Field script step. If you format the field as a list, however, it displays the attached value list. But, in Windows, a field formatted as a menu, shows its value list if you either tab to it, or use the Set Field script step to go to it. Is there anyone who knows why this is so? And could you make the menu value list display perhaps through the use of AppleScript? Thanks for any help, Daniel

in 5.0v1 is it common for files to get corrupted? I have had this a couple of times. The Recover ... function says its worked but as soon as the file is opened FM quits and needs a restart as it claims I still have a copy running after it's quit! ps. I hope this is an appropriate place for this message - I couldn't see a better one.

Everyone: I'm looking for some advice. My small office had (until recently) two separate networks: 1) a 35 user network running FileMaker Server 3.0 and macs and a few pcs on FileMaker Pro 3.0 2) a small 5- mac network running FileMaker Pro 3.0 with a host machine running "Multi-user" files from its own version of FileMaker Pro 3.0. We recently combined both networks to share a high-speed internet connection (we had two different isps previously). After the conversion, the smaller network users could only access files that were opened through the FileMaker Server software on the large network server machine. We have, at this point, put all of our files on the same …

I just completed a back-up of my hard drive (on on Macintosh 8.6, using FileMaker 4.0). Then when I tried to open my database, up popped a dialog box: "The access privileges in this file have b een damaged or possibly tampered with." Huh? I"ve never set any access privilege, never set a password. I've tried running DiskWarrior and Norton. I've tried replacing the file with the one from the backup. I've tried trashing my Filemaker preferences. But I can't access my database...and without that, I'm out of business! Can anyone help? Thanks, Dan O'Day [email protected]

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have one dedicated server that runs FM server 5.0. Through a hub 3 Imacs and a PC are connected on this server. Two Imacs and the PC work well. One Imac is terribly slow... I tried everything. - Checked the ethernet connection of the Imac but speed is good with other tasks (internet, copying files from other computers etc.) - Checked filemakers settings and used the same as the other Imacs. - Reinstalled everything from scratch (including a new installation of Os9) - Assigned more Ram to filemaker on the problem mac - Settings are TCP/IP on the problem mac It really looks like there is a local problem with this one I…

My client is currently running FMP Server 5.5 on a G4 with OS 9.1. FileMaker recommends OS X as the operating system of choice because of its advanced networking and file handling features. I have been running FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my laptop in OS X 10.1.1 with no problems whatsoever. Nevertheless, before updating the server operating system, I'd like to hear the experiences of anybody who has gone this route. The server will be used virtually exclusively for FM server ( I will leave file sharing turned on, as I keep update software stored there, and occasionally need to access it. However, sharing will not be available to any other user, so I expect any performance hit…

Here's what happened: I was creating Multiple Users accounts on Mac 9 machine, and when I was done, I logged on as one of the users. When I tried to access File Maker Server, I couldn't even see it on the network. I had to mannually create a new file in File Maker, go to preferences and swith the protocol to TCP/IP (Somehow by default it got switched to AppleTalk). Only then did I see the server in Hosts window. Question: Should it matter if my protocol is AppleTalk? I should be able to access the server with either protocol, should I not? Thanks in advance

I am in the process of setting up a in-house / web server for Filemaker 5 and Lasso. I have been using webstar with our current provider but since I am doing it in-house I am looking at what is the best Webstar or Web Objects? Am I better off creating my web server with OS X or 9.2.1? Any feedback would be great.

Similar to a previous forum posting, I have OS 9.2.1 and FM 5.5. The installer works fine but when I attempt to run FM I get either an Apple Type 1 (bus error) or a Type 2 (address error) after the splash screen is displayed and the fonts preferneces built and apple talk connected etc. I have tried removing all refernces to FM including the FM Pro Fonts file and re-installing but get the sam eerror. In desperation, I re-installed our earlier version of FM 3.0 but this gave the sam error. I have tried booting the system with all extensions off etc but still no joy. It has been suggested that these errors may be caused by fonts....anyone have any good ideas what to look f…

Hi guys/gals, Is there a way to minimise the amount of information streamed from the server by, when logging on to a client machine, copying the latest prices of stock, client details (each in their own respective databases)onto your local computer, then only go to the server for 'live' info on stock availabilty? I hope that sentance explains my question, but, here's some more info if your confused! At the moment I have a 'Point of Sale' database which pulls info of clients and stock from two other databases. There will be 30 computers (iMacs) running from a server and I want to minimise the amount of work the server does because of getting requests from all the compu…
