Why can't I change the date format? I find it annoying how in filemaker it won't let me type the date in any way i want, eg "saturday may 15 2004" or 2004/05/15" or "jan 22 2003"... In access you can do that, and I think it makes inserting dates easier. I beleive the Canadian date format is yyyy/mm/dd, so for people in Canada it sucks to have to use the year last. Is there a way to change this?

Hi, I have a layout showing for each record in the current table, related records from another table through a portal. Everything's fine except that the last row in the portal leads to the same record as the upper row. Besides, the last row is "invisible", i.e. none of the fields display anything (I set a picture for each row in the portal, that's why I can say there is an invisible row: the picture appears but not field values). The relation between the 2 tables is unambiguous. Any idea

what i am trying to do is build a database where i enter a name in a layout that is like a table. then that name is applied to a generated letter on another layout. but what i am trying to do is make it so that after the name there is a comma. so it would be like: Dear Anyone, what i would like to know is how can i get that comma there without having to type it myself so that the comma is there automatically? any help with this would be great. thanks in advance.

When a button is clicked in Mac, underlying graphics are dimmed. In Windows, however, the area is completely color-inverted. This is really ugly in a database of photographic images, where the images themselves are used as buttons (e.g. to switch between thumbnail and main photo). Is there any solution that would be portable - not dependent upon a user resetting their machine preferences?

Is it possible to update your existing fm solution? For example: If I would make an invoicer solution with some features like products, addresses, invoices,...in one large database and only one window with many tables. Now when my client used database for some time and needs a feature to calculate firm travelling expenses. I many windows programs you get an update, insert disc and run update program wich installs you the new feature. Is this possible in fm or i would have to make solution in many database files like feature one, feature two, etc. and put them together in whole solution? Thanks Dean

Hi All, I have a script that finds records for a particular week eg Term 2 Week 1. Terms and Weeks are global fields that another field (A) uses to work out which week of the year that refers to. I have another field ( that works out what week of the year the current record is in. By going to the All Fields layout, copying the reference from (A), going to find mode and pasting the data in (:, the script finds all the records created that week. Problem is if there are no records I get the 'No Records Match' dialogue. If the user hits cancel, they are taken back to All Fields. Forgive me but I don't have the new 7 here at work so don't remember what it's called. There is an option in find now that will find part of a word - anywhere within the field. I played with it. If I set the find to INDA, it will find Linda - for example. However, I can't get it to work right. I established a global text field to hold the search criteria and a calculation (concentanated text) with FirstName & " " & LastName & " " & PhoneNumber. I applied a little graphic design trick I know to my horribly fuzzy fields and it solved the problem. Select all of your text fields at on time (this is for speed, not a necessary step) then duplicate them. With the duplicated fields still selected, position them on top of the original fields and then nudge them, one pixel at a time. My fields came into focus with the duplicated field just one pixel to the left of the original. By the way, I did this with the original fields having a color fill and the duplicates having a transparent fill plus both fields have black text. Take care, Leslie Davidson

Is there any way to set up relationships that are inexact or "partial"? I'm sure I've gone through this with myself before, but I can't remember if I found a solution or not. To be more specific, I would like to create a relationship between two text fields (globalfield1<-->textfield2) that will act as a filtering relationship. If I put "c" in globalfield1, I would like all values in textfield2 to relate if they start with "c". This is, in effect, much like the way a type-forward drop-down list works. If I put in "ch" only values starting with "ch" are now related, etc. If I were in find mode, this would be the same as looking for "c*", "ch*" etc. …

Well, I'm not getting much feedback on my ActiveX issue, so here's another concern. I have been testing the file sizes of databases containing pictures. Each record has a PNG graphic requiring 8K to store on disk. FileMaker needs about 20K for each picture (after the database is compressed). Am I doing something wrong? Is there a good reason for this? Is it a bug? a weakness in the database structure? This occurs in FM6 as well as FM7. Using a new feature in FM7, storing files in container fields also has a size multiplying effect. Any comments will be appreciated.

I know there is a function in filemaker to generate a random number. Has anyone successfully applied this to make a script to go to a random record? All our records obviously have an id in the format II#xxxxxx where x is an updating serial number. Any ideas? Thanks

I can't seem to get the TextStyleAdd function to recognize styles when referenced from a text field, placing the style directly in the function works fine, but referencing a field produces no change. Am I missing something? FileMaker Business Tracker is a nice program, but I don't know if it is possible to do this: FMBT has invoice and products. When I input new items in product, I get to enter my inventory in "in stock." field. Now when I create an invoice, and input how many of this product is ordered. Can Filemaker automatically deduct the the inventory from the "in stock" field? Thanks Randy

I'm trying out FP7 and find its new relational database thing to be really awkward. I've been a database developer on Windows platforms for years. Maybe MS technologies have too much influence on me. But I really don't appreciate FP7's second-hand / amateur way of handling relational databases. For example, multiple instances of related tables make it so awkward and confusing to define calculated fields using relations. The relations are not directional. There isn't the concept of primary/foreign keys, which is pretty much the foundation of any real relational database engine. There's no cascading update. Okay so currently I have a nice fairly tight filemaker 6 database. 1. Is it easy to upgrade this to .fp7 (simple file extension change) 2. Are there any annoying bugs that haven't been iron out yet. 3. I'm looking in to having a palm sync setup so is mobile version of 7 much better? 4. What main benefits am I going to get? 5. I know it's usually bad form to dive into a new board with a question, but what I've already found here enabled me to ask a better one than I might have otherwise. So here goes... We've got over 20 Mac clients (mostly 6100s... think "dumpster fodder") running FMP 4.1v1 to connect to a server running the same. Thanks to detailed contributions to this forum (as well as an effective search function), I've learned that this is, ahem, not ideal. It sounds like the ideal config would be a B&W G3 running FMP server v3. We already have both of these assets in-house, so no problem there. I'm new to FileMaker but am very familiar with RDBMSes in general. I'm creating a database that includes both multi-table joins and self-joins. I've defined these relationships in the relationships graph. I want to show users on the detail screens for a given record other related records, either from other tables or the same table. For example, in the DEVIATIONS table, the REPORT_NO field acts as the primary key, and the RAD_LOT_NO and HPTC_LOT_NO are foreign keys from two other tables. We are running FMP pro 6 and Server 5.5 with about 25 files on an all Mac network. When users type in text (notes, etc), it usually goes in as "Verdana" size 10 - I'm not sure where this is set - is it the system font, or default FMP font, or simply the last one that was used in that file? Also, if they copy text from the Finder or other apps, it goes in as whatever font and color and size it was in the other app. Is there any way to force all text to always be the same - maybe a script within FMP, or an Applescript when FMP starts up?

Is there a way to reprogram the wheel on a mouse on windows, through scripting in filemaker, and so this new behaviour only applies in filemaker? Basically I'd like to be able to trigger a script when a user scrolls the mouse up or down. A customised 'next/previous record script' Anyone know of any plugins for this? I have a calculated field that is derived from three other fields, "Organization, Last Name, and First Name." The fields appear in the calculated result in the order shown. The calculated field might display as Organization or Organization / Last Name, First Name or Last Name, First Name depending on which of the composing fields have values. The problem is that a sort, even when including only the calculated field in the sort definition, seems to always be based on the contents of the Last Name field. It seems that in FMP 7 a portal's scrollbar is only visible when the portal's pen pattern isn't transparent. I don't believe this is the case in FMP 6. Is there a way that I can show the portal's scrollbar only without framing the portal?

I have a strange, potentially big problem that just popped up. This morning I tried to work on a database I am developing for my school district. I worked on the db two days ago, no problem. Today the files opened, but I am locked out of editing privileges, ie. I can not change permissions or passwords, define fields or scripts, but I can access the Layout mode. I am using the same full access master password I have always used, but the db acts like I am using a limited password I set up for admin. I have checked all passwords. All are limited access. Then I checked an older copy and the same thing occurred. Then I checked an unrelated db and the same thing is happened…

I am migrating a database written in FMP v3 that I did not write to FMP v7. I have found that the author uses tests like: If ( <condition> ; 1 ; GetAsNumber("") ) ...in number fields that act like boolean flags. Does anyone have any idea why he would use GetAsNumber("") to mean false instead of the number zero? I'm not even clear on what GetAsNumber("") returns-- I think it sets the field to empty/no value. Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to add a new field into a record without it affecting all of the other records? Also - when I added something it didn't format into the layout I had created. Please can someone tell me how to make a button appear greyed-out and un-pressable? I've come across it in a stand-alone database (from Developer), but I can't access the code. The idea would be to make a button "live" only when certain fields have been filled in. Can it be done without a plug-in? If not, what plug-in would I need? If I could trigger a layout from a field, I guess I could do it that way. But how?

I need to have a TABLE VIEW type layout that puts field names in a column on the left and record values in a spreadsheet type grid on the right. In microsoft excel this is accomplished by copying a row of values and doing a "PASTE SPECIAL" command that would transpose them from being distributed horizontally to being distributed vertically. For example: The values in cells A1-B1-C1 would show up on the spreadsheet as A1-A2-A3. Is there a way to format a layout like this in FM7? Thanks.

The problem is the following: I'm parsing a txt file which contains color information in the format of a number from 0 to 16777215. I know that FM7 can deal with that numbers. For instance, instead of TextColor("Hi";RGB(255;0;0)) you can also use TextColor("Hi";16711680). I also know how the calculation is done: Red * 65536 + Green * 256 + Blue. The bad thing for me is that the txt files I'm parsing have interchanged RED and the BLUE values, which means that e.g. Red=255 and Blue=16711680. Is there any chance to reconvert from number values to RGB values?? If so, I could easily interchange R and B in a calculation afterwards.

Hello everyone, I have a field that I want the user to view but not edit. The field has a scroll bar. I also have a Data Entry Screen where I modify and edit the contents of that field. How can I allowed the user to use the scroll bar without changing the contents of that field. When I uncheck the box for Allow field to be entered in the Field Behavior, it does not allow the user to scroll down when there is more text to be viewed. Thanks for any help

I want to run a script whenever a user commits a record in a specific table. Now, I can place a "Save" button on the data entry layout for that table and have that button execute a script that commits the record and performs other steps but the user can commit the record without ever clicking on my button. Maybe I'm not the only one to note this.... but on my mac (10.3.3) FMP 7 trial doesn't seem to be expiring. The expiration date just seems to move back every day so there are always 30 days left. I already own FMP Dev, but you would think FMI would want others to actually pay for a copy rather than just using the demo forever. (I also have a demo for winXP that actually does expire)

Is there a website or something that will help me design a calculator type search. I want to create a page that looks just like a basic calculator. However, the only difference is that this program will do finds instead of calculations. I'm sending a beginning file. My first step is to have my numbers apear in the cal view window when I press any one of the number keys. Yes I can do this on the keyboard but I want to do it by my mouse. Restore. I was wondering if anyone has a script that restores from an existing backup where the back up is created by script in a different directory and different file name such as filenamebac.fp I've been finding that the backup works okay one or two times and then tells me the file is locked.... I assumed it was open/ so closing the file before starting the backup process worked okay but creating a restore script has proven elusive since it doesn't seem to find the file directory or if it does the file is locked or in use... even though the script is closing the file. I found that FM7 scripts run by ActiveX did not work in VB6 applications using Sax Basic (VBA clone, www.sax.net). The same scripts work fine in FM6. I never had a problem with ActiveX before. In order to have something FileMaker tech support could reproduce, I put together simple Ver 6 and Ver 7 examples using FM and Excel. These are attached; you click the button in Excel to create a new record in FM. The FM6 version works reliably; the FM7 version eventually crashes at random times. I have been asked to assess whether or not it would be possible to build a solution for my company using Filemaker 7. ...and I'm hoping I can even explain what I'm trying to do! I have a very large file, and each record has an ID such as 121, 121A, 121B and so on. I would like to strip the letters off each one, leaving just the number, and then combine each record. That I have no idea how to do, but here's the way tricky part. Each record is a geographical area and has population info as well as percentages. Some of the percentages are based on real-world data such as gender and ethnicity, but some other percentages are not calculations based directly on population data. I learned about the text color function here a couple of days ago and it makes my head swim with new ideas. This took me to the RGB function where colors are represented by numbers. Is there some kind of a color chart available that corrolates the RGB number with the color? What would be really cool is to click on a color and have the number present itself. What would be cooler is to click on a color wheel and have the color selected trigger a script that put the appropriate values into a field box that could drive the Text Color Function. Hi, I am trying to set up a database where the operator types a few letters of a name, clicks a button and is taken to a form to fill in other data. Clearly, I can use find view then go to the form but I am hoping to cut down the steps. The other thing I would like is for the operator to be able to type letter combinations from anywhere in the name ie first name or last name. Pop up lists won't identify multiple examples of a name eg smith. If I use a concatenated First and Second name in a pop up it is better but I can't go from there to the form with that client's details. Any ideas Thanks David Devitt

How to copy data from a matching source record to a result record and not overwrite the original result record data when it is different. An .fp5 file contains records from two similar FileMaker Pro 6 databases, the result file and the source file. Greetings, I am trying to create a database that will automatically create a document number when the user clicks "Create New" button. To do this, I have created another table, which I will used as a counter of sorts. It will keep track of the last number used, and when the new document is created, it will up the number by one in both places. I am not sure how to access the counter from the scriptng page, though. There are more than one type of document, so it will have to be able to find the exact field I am pointing it to, and change it after the creation process is complete. I'm converting a multiple file application from FM5 to FM7. When leaving one file for another via script the screen is white for almot a full second before the new window is presented. I had a similar problem FM5 years ago and found that hiding the file I left AFTER entering the new file's layout solved the problem but such is not the case with FM7. After some experimentation I isolated the step that causes the white out: "move/resize current window to size XXX" for the entering file. I've gone back to modify some folder tab images in Photoshop for my website. These images were created months before I installed FileMaker 7. Like an idiot, I rasterized all the text, so now I have to re-create it to make the changes. The font was 10pt Verdana, but I'm unable to match the anti-aliasing of the existing text. Each setting in the new text (sharp, crisp, strong, smooth) is much more dramatic than the anti-aliasing of the existing text. The anti-aliasing steps actually resemble those of FileMaker's, in that each step just gets darker and more illegible. Though I highly doubt it, these different levels of anti-aliasing may be exactly how they were before. …

I am trying to get the first 40 records of the field "id" into a new field "id_numbers". I bulit a script to do this with loop and set field for id_numbers but I do not know how to script or define a calculation that would take the first 40 records and put it into a new field then grab the next 40 records and put it into the next id_numbers record. I have been trying the omit multiple and then delete all records but how to get the 40 records into the one record is beyond my FMP level. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hello from Sweden, I have followed the discussions in this Forum as in the Swedish and a lot of people say that they wish they havent upgrade. Its a lot of problem with the new 7. Many people dont agree they have to upgrade the platform to at least W2000. How is it? Is it woth all the money to upgrade or is it so many people who dont like it so Filemaker have to make changes before they accept? Should I keep my FM5 solutions and buy used licenses for the future or should I upgrade? In FM7 when formatting a field for a value list , when formatted as popup list the response is extremely extremely slow but when formatted as a pop up menu the reponse is very fast. Here's what I am making: I am trying to get a list summary of our products' sales. For each record I want to put a new product. On the sheet of the record/product I want a list of each months sales. With it I want to insert the month sales and products sold (so unit sales and monatary records). I have made a field for the month of sales and well as each sales thing to track. I want the monthly one to be seen as well as a running total for individual product. But I want to keep this all together on one record. Does anyone know of a way to disable the wheel mouse scroll action - but just for filemaker? I'm developing a custom solution which will be relying on a script to move between records, obviously if people are just scrolling down using the wheel mouse, the scripts aren't being performed. I'm waiting for the next version of the securefm menumagic plugin from www.nmci.com to control the ctrl+down/up aspect of record navigation - by setting a script to those hotkeys. Does anyone know how to disable the mouse wheel button scrolling effect in windows - but just for filemaker? Thanks

It seems that the web log (access.log) that the Web Companion produces records activity for one week and then starts over again. Is this normal activity or have I set up something improperly? Shouldn't it accumulate beyond one week? Also, is their an easy way to sort out Filemaker served pages so I can find out which records are accessed most often? I am using Sawmill as a web analyzer but it seems to lump all FMPro? calls together. I know that repeating fields and their shortcomings have been the subject of many posts, BUT I dare to ask - Is there a way of using a variable to nominate the nth element of a repeating field so a loop structure can progressively fill the repeats - ie - get a count of the active repeats, use this to set an 'array' variable which can then address the individual repeats as array is incremented in the loop?? ie instead of RepeatField[1], RepeatField[2] being hardcoded, use RepeatField[Array]???

I have a layout which extends past a page break - I have colour fill in the body and a header with graphics and text - when in preview mode, the second page has no header, and the body fill extends all the way up the page, but the field which crosses the page break starts the correct distance down as though the header is there - messed around for some time trying to find the problem before taking out the fill colour - presto the header re-appeared on page 2. Tried the same layout in FM6 and it works fine - is this a bug in FM7??

We have a Mac OSX Server (Panther) running Filemaker server and another running the client with the Web Companion Plugin. We are a school and the purpose of this is so parents of the students can check attendance, missed work, and etc. We are using cdml of course to move some variables from the web to filemaker. Hi all: I just recently purchased FileMaker and is awesome! Now, being a newbie, I haven't found a way to do the following: I created a db with text fields. In one of them, called "software" I'm using a value list. I chose the field format checkbox set and "include 'other...' item to allow entry of other values". This works great, but no I can't find a way to make this to print the extra information I add in "other". Thank you for your help and cudos to this forum. Amazing!!

I would like to create a unique serialnumber on each of my clients. I would like to use the three first letters of the companys name and then have three numbers that will increase with one number for each client whos have the same first three letters. Hello, I need a bit of help with a problem. My company enters dispatch orders into an FM 5.5/6 database. Each time a new record is created, the next available 'Pro' number is automatically input to the PRO field. It's just an auto-entered serial number, obviously. Now, we have branched out to remote offices from 3 additional cities, all tied into our FM server, using the same database. I have a portal on a layout that uses a pulldown menu to populate the first field of the record. Once one record is in, though, it won't allow me to use the pull down menu again...I have specified that the relationship can be used to create records, so it isn't that. Whats the best way of storing tables in FMP 7.0? I know you can now create one file which contains all the database tables for the solution as opposed to creating a separate file for each table. So which is the best for a case where I have: one table with 200+K records (yearly increase of about 300-700 records) three tables with 20K records ( yearly increase of about 20k-30k records each) one tables with 8k records ( yearly increase of about 8-10k records) There are other tables with less data and a lower yearly increase, but all the same they are currently in one file. I have run into a problem over the last couple of days. I am building a solution and I needed to delete a field I found obsolete. I opened up Define Database. select the field and hit delete... then the defined database dialog just konks out. So I went back to Define database and see the field still there but now when I try to delete it, FMP 7 says that the data definitions are being edited by someone else (ie me!) Now here is the weird part... After this happens, my scripts will not execute. I start a script and it just hangs on the first step -- I have to cancel the script to exit it. OK... In scriptmaker there's a 'print setup' script step, which lets you specify certain settings for the print setup dialog box, and then save them with the script to let you perform that script step without showing that dialog. However, how do you store the settings from the 'print' dialog? Everytime I flash up the print dialog it can give users the opportunity to print the script and field definitions. I want to be three copies of FileMaker Pro 7 for a small business. The software costs a lot more in Europe than the U.S. I need to know that if I purchase in the U.S. can I legitimately install and register the software in Ireland. If I buy online from the U.K. each copy will cost me $435.44. If I order from the Irish Apple Store it costs $498.19 per copy. I can buy online in the U.S. for as little as $220.00 per copy. Well, Using the trial version works but it seems slower than version 6. I like all the features they have added but they missed the biggest feature of all, Panther style graphics and buttons, They still have the 80's style buttons and graphics for scroll lists, buttons etc. its hard to make the databases look modern and reflect the current GUI's, They should of incorporated GUI design elements from either MAC Panther and or Windows XP. I was hoping that they would also have some sort of TABBED BUTTON Design elements but they didn't! Have a look at check boxes and scroll boxes, they are still 80's ugly!!!
