I work for a doctor, and on the patient tracking database I'm working on, I have 3 Diagnosis pop-up menus. I need to store the diagnosis information from previous patient visits somewhere. Can someone suggest a way to do this? Is there a button I can create? Basically I need to have this information available and have it not take up too much space...seeing as the patients return every couple weeks. I've very new at filemaker pro, and I'm having a hard time figuring out the more complex solutions. Thanks a lot.

I have a problem in getting a relationship made using match fields that have repetitions. Example: Say I have separate repeating fields in a database named Printer Die Number, and Die Size. How can I see the Die Size in a related field when I choose the Printer Die Number. Now all I see is the first Die Size value in the related file, not values that are entered down the repeating list.

Hi, When I'm creating a report from FM I'd like to put page number in one corner in the format of "page X of Y". Displaying the current page number is obvious but I just can't come up with a way of showing the total number of pages in a report (preview mode). Help! I am starting to set up a security system for my database. I am trying to feel out how I need to go about this. Here is the cirteria, and I would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you. When it is completed, there will be around 25 - 30 databases. For now there will be ten users, soon there will be many more users on the server version. I want to be able to either have each user have specific abilities or have about fifteen groups. But if I have the groups I still need to be able to track each individual user's time spent on particualar proects. One of my friends managed to link his Access database to his accounting software so that if a customer's details eg address are changed in the database the change is automatically made in the accounting software. greetings all, I am working with a barcode reader that inputs data into my fields. The barcode reader "TABS" to each line. What I need to do is ,..somehow trigger filemaker to "New Record" I thought of a hand held barcode sheet that I could mauallu read when i wanted to go to the next record. eg,...bar code for cmd + N,....the problem is, the command key does not have a font therefore I cannot generate a barcode for it. I'm currently developing a database system for my school. I defined a number field call SSN(Social Security Number) and would follow the format xxx-xx-xxxx. I would like the dash(-) to always be in the 4th and 7th positions so the users don't have to type it out. In other words, whenever after the users type a number in the 3rd position, the cursor will jump to the 5th position. I having a go at a database for 2 departments to use within our company. 1st is SALES, the 2nd is Production. I need a system that once the sales person has entered his information it then alerts production that a quote is needed. Is there any way of doing this? - At the moment I am using a list view with check boxes against the jobs that need quotes. The only problem with this is that your are relying on the production department to check if any qoutes are needed, rather than the system alerting them to the job. In a FileMaker3 database, we would like to record the number of times a field in a databade is changed. What is the most efficient way of keeping track of the number of times a change has been made? I've created relational image database with a portal in my main.fp5 database displaying multiple photographs (different views of objects) from a related file called Images.fp5. My problem is that I have created layout in Main database that displays medium sized images in the scrollable portal and I want to be able to click on any image( in the portal) to take me to a new layout that shows me the same image fullscreen size. I can get the script to take me to another layout displaying the fullscreen sized portal, but it always defaults to the first image in the sequence. Any ideas? Thanks David Adam [email protected]

if i create a field that is an auto enter serial number, and have the number increase by 1 for every record. on the web form of this database, if i were to sort by the auto enter number then it would come out like this 1 10 11 12 13 14 ... 2 20 21 and so on, so i made the auto number formed like this 0001, 0002, 0003 and so on, and the big boss guy doesnt like the 000 in front of the number, so i was wondering if i could just like block out all the 0's in that field so that only the number is left.

I have a file for Order Entry. It is related to a Customer file. My order entry file lists the Customer and has related fields to the Customer file that will automatically put in the shipping address. My problem is, sometimes I have to ship the product to a different company and address, but still show that it was bought by the 1st company. This does not happen very often. Do I need to put in some kind of script to override the shipping address, and let me insert a different address in without changing my original customer file. I'm stumped, I hope someone will please help me. There must be a simple way of doing this, but I'm new to this. Thanks!

Is there a way to export selected records instead of the entire set of records that I see in a portal? For example,I like to export the most recent record that's entered in the portal of a relational DB. Also, it seems like when I export records into a new .csv file, they always overwrite the existing records. Is there a way to ADD newly experted records, rather than REPLACE the existing ones, on the new file?

Hi again, Have following problem: When sending mail from my base, according to what mailsystem receiver got, the formatting is changed. Me=Exchange, receiver=Lotus Notes. If I want the text to start 20 spaces from left to right, without clearing these spaces (and text in same area), how do I put text 20 spaces into document? Hello! I have been managing my customer data base for years using AW5 (AppleWorks 5) on my Mac, but now I have hired two assistants and I need them to also have access to the data base so I networked the Macs using ethernet & Appletalk... someone suggested FM 5 but I have two questions: 1. Can 3 users manage and work (view, search and SAVE) on the same database simultaneously? (This doesn't seem possible on AW5 or AW6... right?) 2. I have my customer data base on AW5, is it possible to export to FM5? how complicated of a process is this? 3. Anything else I should know or final suggestions? Here is the situation. I need to chart some data from FMP5 and I prefer to use Excel. I have purchased x2Max's plugin and it works OK but doesn't give my client enough flexibility ie. it only takes numbers, not dates, as data and there for the labels on the bottom of the screen don't always line up rigt, as well, it can't print higher than 72 dpi. What do you get for $380 these days? Anyway, I would like to have an Excel SS in a container (OLE) and be able to send DDE code to MSQuery to query my data in FMP and put that new data into Excel. Hope you can help me with this, I'm building a library database that will be published on my company's intranet. The records includes many types of documents, either on paper or as computer files. I need to create either a button or an hyperlink that will permit a user to download a document by clicking on the link appearing on the fmp results web page. They say that when you are specifying passwords in Filemaker, you can turn off the ones you want. Unfortunately, I've tried and can't turn off Browse not for anything. I can understand why this would be difficult, because you are disabling a vital function of the database. I've got a client with a set of FMP 4 databases that is reporting missing records. Whenever a new record is created, it is assigned a unique ID. The client reports that there have been gaps in the IDs, and the gaps are records that have been recently worked on, but not deleted. I've checked the scripts to make sure that the records aren't being deleted inadvertantly through a script, and the client assures me that they have not deleted them on purpose. I performed a recover on the file, but to no avail. Today I also saved the files as clones, and then imported the data from the originals. I've got a database of class evaluations where I want to get totals and summary data for the evaluations based on different criteria. Most of the reports have each record fall into a single category for the break field. For instance, each class has a single title (and there are many classes with the same title). So getting average evaluations with summary fields and parts is pretty straight forward. But one report is on the category for the class, and a class can fall into multiple categories. Dear all, I noticed the following erroneous behaviour using FM Pro 5.0v3 on a Power Macintosh G3 running Mac OS 8.6. I have a layout for a report which contains some text fields of my database records. In this layout, these fields have a text format specifying the font and style. However, when a field contains superscripts or subscripts, this formatting is ignored and the report shows the formatting which was used when entering the data. I'm trying to prevent users to use FM5 keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl+F, which switches to Find mode, Ctrl+Down Arrow/Up arrow and so on), and to supersede in that way the action buttons which control find and navigation. Does anyone know how to create a layout in an Excel-type spread-sheet format, with the months (Jan-Dec) going across the top? I have a typical database which records invoicing details. It sorts easily enough by month with the months going down the left, but I cannot find how to get the months across the top as column headings, with the appropriate information in those columns. I am new to relational databases and testing many to many relationships and portals prior to completing a larger database. I have 3 files, File A - Employees, File B - Classes and File C - Join File EmpClass. If this looks vaguely familiar, it is right out of the manual. ?? I can see how you could write a stay open AppleScript that has an idle setting of something like 1 minute and on idle does something like this: if application "FileMaker Pro Server" is not in processes restart end if My syntax may be off, but that would be the general idea. Then place an alias of the FileMaker Server application in the start up items folder. I would do it this way so that you have an automatic restart after a crash. I log in registrations for a camp using Pro 5. We have a problem with a corrupt FP3 file, which was apparently closed wrong. When we try to open the file, we get the following error message: "Access privileges have been damaged or tampered with." When we move the file to a Mac (Filemaker Pro 5), we can convert and open the file, but it only has one blank record (and is about 1/100 the size of the original). Is there any manual way to break into one of these things? We can write programs, run Crystal Reports, pay a consultant, whatever it takes. I would appreciate anyone's help with this problem. I am a school teacher creating a Filemaker 4.0 database where students can vote in the upcoming Presidential Election. I am somewhat familiar with FMPro 4.0 but cannot come up with a calculation for the following problem. Students register to vote and are assigned a password using the random number calculation. I have created a new database by copying and renaming an existing one. When I try to reopen the new database, I get a message that the file is damaged and cannot be reopened and needs to be "receovered". When I try to recover the file, I get a message that says I cannot recover the file unless I do so with the version of Filemaker Pro that it was created with. I only have one version (3.0) and all files were created with it - so, I don't understand this message and I cannot get onto the database. Someone please help! By the way this is on an iMac computer.

My company has used File Maker for years on MAC computers, but they have decided to switch to PC's. When we transferred the database from the MAC's to the PC the layout on the screen was fine, but when we print the a sheet the layout becomes misaligned. We have sheets of data that display operation numbers in one column and they must line up with the operation data in another column. Well on the screen the numbers line up with the data, but when we print the sheet the numbers no longer align with the data. It worked perfectly on the MAC version, but when used on a PC we have that problem. What could cause this problem? Please help.

I'm working (in Mac) on a cross-platform dictionary with links to audio files for each headword. Does anyone know whether MP3 files linked to container fields are supported in Windows (of what stripe)? What is the Windows equivalent of Quicktime that runs audio files, and is it freeware, and is it supportable in a wide range of Windows versions? I am trying to print directly to the Adobe Acrobat PDFWriter to create PDF files. Occasionaly this will work but what usually happens is that FileMaker crashes. When I look at the details of the crash it tells me that FMTOOLS.dll is the program having the problem. Has anyone else encountered this? If so were you have to find a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm a longtime user of FM Pro but I must admit I only use it in a limited fashion. I would like to chat with other users of FM Pro to better understand the finer points. I've been using FP to run dispatch for my messenger company. Is there any way to dynamically designate the repitition number of a repeating field when using it in a script? That is, can I use a formula result to choose which repitition I want to use? I've been unable to do this either with the Scriptmaker or Applescript.

I have FileMaker Server 3.0 installed on a Appleshare server, being accessed by macs. I have been instructed to upgrade to an NT server and Filemaker Server 5.0 accessed both by mac and pc's. My question is..will the files convert from 3.0 to 5.0 with little or no problems and if they were created using client 3.0 will I be able to access them in a later client?

Is there a way to automatically back up files that are open with FMPRServer 3.0. It runs as a service with Win Nt 4, and I am using dantz retrospect to back up the databases, but it cant back up databases that are in use by the FMPRO Service. I Do know that the mac version of the server has a built in scheduler for doing back ups, but how do i do this on Win Nt?

I am doing report cards for a school district. I am using FileMaker 4.0. I have Report Card Comment boxes where a list of comments pop up. It says Student does this or that. I want the Student first name to show up -- instead ofthe word student. How can I make the student first name and then the comment text flow together. The standard <<NameF>> does not work in the popup menu or list --- Is there anyway to make it work in a popup list situation? After duplicating or saving a copy of our database (approximately 300MB) to a CDROM, I can preview, browse, export data but not add or edit data. I've tried saving or writing to both a regular CD and a rewriteable CD. I assumed that writing to a regular CD restricted or turned on the Read-Only restriction. I can't figure how to get rid of this. I need to constantly update and transfer interoffice data but our database is too large to save on regular floppies etc. I do not have problems with saving any other programs or files to CD with full access and editing,just FileMaker program. Any solutions, recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Hello all: Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I haven't found an answer to the problem so far. Here it is: I have a db created in FMP 5, and its shared as Entry Only in the Web Companion. In IE 5 and 4 on Mac and Win, the Entry Only layout works. On Netscape (Mac, Win I haven't tried yet) I get a short attempt to build the Entry Only layout, wich terminates prematurely, and then builds a List View layout, which allows full manipulation of the data. This is exactly what I don't want!! I need a 'data drop box' without further access to data for web users. Is it possible to do a search from two fields of one field. In other words, I have a database that has two views/layouts, one is a search layout that has the fields for CD number, Job number, File name, and Location. The other layout is where the actual data will be put in has fields for CD number, Location, and Contents. In the Contents field there will be a job numbers: next to each job number will be a file name (I am doing this to simplfy input). I want that when someone types in the search field a job numer or a file name that it will search for either one or both in the contents field of the other layout. Can I create custom user interfaces for Web Companion. The default themes are boring and I didn't find any info on the manual. Basically can I create a custom browser page for WebCompanion, or is it only possible on different versions of Filemaker? I'm not talking about the html page which loads first. Using Claris Home Page and FMP5 Unlimited. When we modify a html page it seems like it takes a long time for a browser to pickup the changes. Is there a cache or something that needs to be flushed? Why aren't the changes reflected as soon as the file is saved and the browser page refreshed? I've tried starting and stopping services on the server for FMP5 Unlimited, deleting browser history, quitting browser and even restarting browser computer. Nothing seems to help.

hi out there! my problem: data from a *.rtf - file including specially fotmatted characters (e.g. sub- or superscripted) must be imported to a fileMaker file. if i convert the *.rtf to plain text, the formatting is (of course) gone. drag and drop won't work. converting to excel won't work (keeps the formatting, but FM kills it while importing the spredsheet). santa won't work. anybody can help? im located in germany, so excuse my english, please. greets, chris

Hi! I'm new to this forum... Hopefully someone can offer me some insight with a problem that I'm having. I have FileMaker 4 Web Companion running on my web server. The site runs WebSTAR 4.2 on port 80 and FileMaker on 591. I used to have the two applications on different machines, but because of a hardware problem I have had to load both on the same G3. Anyway, I'm having problems with crashing. When I try to quit Filemaker I get an error that says "FileMaker is unable to close xxxxx.fp3. The disk that this databse is on cannot be updated." If I drag copy, or copy a field in layout view, no problem, but if I drag a new field from the tool bar, the text alignment gets all screwy at certain sizes. Some of the data will center in the field on the first line (with any alignment on!) and the rest will drop down and move left. Whats up? Thanks. Don

In other words I want to allow people to input data in the database but after all the data is input when someone does a find for specific record or records, I don't want them to be able edit the data that is found. A client wants our company to add a database for their homepage which is on their ISPs server (it's propably UNIX). I'm not talking about simply exporting the database to .html they basically want the database on that server in a similar matter as it would appear if it would be server with 'WebCompanion'. Does their ISP need to have some sort of special filemaker support? Or does the server have to be strickly a Macintosh or a Windows-PC? What do I need to be able to view/modify the database with my WebBrowser when the database is actually on a UNIX machine which isn't running filemaker. I'm using FM Pro 5 Unlimited and am trying to serve the data using FM WebServer Assistant. So far so good. The problem comes when I try to display my some of the data. I've converted data in FMPro to display percentages. I've then used HomePage to generate the html and cdml tags for the page. Unfortunately, the data displays as decimal type, not percentages. (Though the database is displaying percentages) Can someone please help me? I've done everything I know to do, but it still displays in html as decimal data.
