  1. Hello all- After upgrading to FM server 5.5 and FM pro 5.5, I had some difficulty creating my opener file. In my script the step: Open [Mydb.fp5(*)] would show the asterisk rather than the IP address of my host, regardless of whether or not I checked save relative path. The users that are physically in the same office with me were able to use this to connect to the server. However, users outside of my office would get an error =100 (file not found). The only way that I was able to get FM to insert the actual IP address of my server (rather than the asterisk) was to create this script from one of the off-site client computers. Does anyone know …

A curious question: I have noticed on certain Windows machines the layout pop up menu appears across the entire screen showing all of the layouts. Most Window machines display the pop up menu vertically and one has to scroll through the menu to find a layout. Anyone know why? Is is a setting in Windows or FileMaker? I would like to see all layouts if possible. Status(CurrentPlatform): Win 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP(Home) [bleah!]; FMP 5-6x

  4. I am working with a complex FM solution called Ebase (www.ebase.org), created for non-profits. This database contains a number of server side files (these are the data files) and a number of client side files that control access by clients. All client machines get an identical set of files. This design was created to allow users to customize their database to handle new functionality (by modifying the client side files) while allowing the developers to control key files (server side files) for the purposes of creating upgrades to the system. This is on a Windows 2000 network, set up by a consultant. Dell server running FM Server 5, clients running FMP 6. Should be…

If open our DB on the XP, I can not open it as a guest on any of the other systems. The open files do not show up in the Open Remote. If I move it to one of the 98's, all other computers (including the XP) can access as a guest perfectly, so this should mean file sharing is properly set up. The XP has the Remote Data Access Companion box checked, and Zone Alarm is set up exactly as the other systems. Would this be something in the XP system's network setup, or the XP's i…

I'm curious about whether any of you can give me any feedback on how fast Filemaker performs on OSX compared to OS9. I have OSX 10.0.4 which was shipped with my G4. I have never upgraded to a newer version because I still mainly run OS9. When I run FM 5.5 on OSX it seems to run about 4 times slower than it does on OS9.2. This applies to all operations: finds, big replace operations, scripts etc. This really worries me. Are the newer versions of OSX faster? I hope so. I can't imagine having to eventually migrate to a new OS that performs so badly compared to the old one. Is FM6 faster than FM5.5?

I've run a Disk Utilities, Repair, repair Permissions, fsck, etc. Yet when I open a FMPro shared database being server from a FMPro server it open fine. I do a search for a particular record; it finds it fine. But if I select "Print" it begins the script, starts to change layouts and crashes ("Unexpectedly quit"). I've repeated this as root as well as another user. It is not able to be replicated on other stations. Is this a FMPro issue or a Mac issue? Sounds like FMPro to me?? My problem is that when we open the files up on the host system, is gives me a message that it is opening the files from a remote volume. For some reason, I can no longer get the DIal Phone script step to work. I get the "Hang up you modem" box, but nothing happens. I know the modem in my B/W Mac G3-350, running OS 9.2, is working, because I can send faxes with it. This feature was working until I had to do a disk rebuild (from the bottom up - new installation of all OS and application files). The modem is set up as ATQ0V1E1S0=0, Prefix is DT (I'm using this on private line), Hang Up is +++ATH, speed is set at 28800 (highest one available in FMP 4.0). It's frustrating because I have grown very accustomed to this neat time saving feature. Anyone know why this problem happened?

Go to www.no-ip.com for all the info. We have just implemented FMP6 on a Mac wireless network, with about a dozen files served by FM Server 5.5 on a dedicated machine. We've noticed that as we're working on the hosted files, our work is interrupted very frequently by automatic sorts that lock us out of the program while they're proceeding. Is there any way to minimize this? Could it be a function of the cache size set at the client desktop level. Thanks. PS: All clients are running OS X.1.5, as is the server.

FMPro 5.03 (in the start-up screen) shows "TCP/IP failed to load". Then it will not connect to our server....which allows only TCP/IP connections. The computer has no difficulty connection to the internet or other processes requireing a TCP/IP connection. This appears to be only a FMPro issue? I've tried re-installing. Help!!

  61. I am running FMP 5.5 in Classic environment with OS X.2. In the layout mode using a single mouse click/hold to select an element causes the selected element to duplicate, which makes trying to move an element with the mouse a very frustrating experience. The problem is occuring on 3 Macs: 2 desktop G4s and a laptop G3. Never had this problem in OS 9.2 before OS X.2.

I was wondering... I am having trouble program sharing FM 5.5... is it a networkable program? We have only installed it on one computer, we are just trying to get everyone to access it. If it is... what settings are we missing? We have activated File Sharing, activated the proper groups and set the executables and proper files to be shared. Any ideas? Thanks! KC

I was wondering if anyone might know why the following is happening: I have a database that is accessed by a few users (2-3) on a Windows 2000 server (db resides) and Windows 98 (Client O/S). This database has a relationship with an images db. The problem lies when the file is opened by any user (client or server becomes the host) not all the records appear in the database. Then whenever the hosted file is opened by another user (a Guest of the Host) all the records are visible??? The password used to open the file is full access and NTFS and sharing permissions are full control as well. - Does anyone have an idea as to why and what could be causing the problem?…

FMP 5.5 v.1 is installing ok but when I try to update it to v.2 I get an error writing file "a88b3.msi" ( I think the name changes when I do a new installation) and the message says to check if the file exists (it does) and if I have permission to access it (I do). The file is located in c:windowsinstaller . It is not the first time I install this updater and I never had any trouble but it is the first time I install it on a Compaq computer Does anyone have a clue? Thanks Brigitte

I am running server 5.5 on W2K Server with db files and 50 + users (all internal). Occasionally the ability to see the list of db's in the "host view" is lost. Users can still get to the list by specifing the host's ip address. The situation is corrected only by a re-boot of the server. This on happens every infrequently and I'm not sure I can associate an event with occurance. Question? (well two actually) can the FM server be "re-freshed" without a re-boot or stopping the service? And, is there any method by which time in the "send message to all" dialog can be extended beyond 30 seconds (other than the disconnect notice which allows longer time). Thx

I'm not sure this is the right category for this question, so I apologize if it's not. I am frequently having problems with my FM files becoming damaged. I go through the recovery process, but the whole thing is a huge pain when having to compensate over the network for the damaged file. It happens on several files, and it has happened several times to the same files. Is there something I can do to prevent this? Is it an embedded flaw in the program, or is Windows that is causing the problem?

I have foolishly lost all data from a database. I intended to create a copy of a database, then delete all records in the new database to start a new seperate database with all the original layouts, but ready to put new data in. Instead of 'Save a copy as' I simply copied the original db, and pasted into a new folder. I have then opened the new db, and deleted all records. What I didn't realise is that when I opened the new db, it actually looked for and opened the original db, and then all records deleted!!! I have restored it from a backup that was made on Friday (it is just on a normal NT server as does not need to be shared) but just opens with no data in. …

Hi folks, This is not so much related to File Maker, but it is to MAC OS X warning: I'm very new to Samba and this question may sound completely pathetic, but I'll take that chance. I understand that both W2K Pro and OS X incorporate an smbclient in them (OS X understands NetBios names).
