I am currently writing in FM Pro 6.0 Developer and need to advance to a multi-user environment. What is the best route to take in either replacing FM 6 Dev or complimenting it with a network program developer?

"The more I learn, the dumber I get"! The program is a very simple and straight forward "Vendor Data Base". I want to print a report using 3 of the fields in a 2 column layout. The results I'm getting are puzzling to say the least. The fields are always entered into the form as F1, F2 and F3 (in that order). In preview they may be displayed as F2, F1, F3 or F3, F2, F1. Also, the columns appear to be of "fixed" widths and all equal so that a 4 digit "vendor number" would use a 15 col field size and a 25 char "vendor name" is restricted to the same 15 col field size. IE:# name phone 1234 Town And Coun800-555-5555 En fin: Is ther…

Hi, I have an odd question -- with hopefully an easy answer. On one of my machines, whenever I open a file, it tells me: FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer. ... and only allows me to say OK -- after which it opens the file, but does not allow me to share it. Te problem is that there are no other users using FMP on that machine. This happens consistently, even after restarts. Likewise, when I try to host said file from FS8, it will not allow me to Open the database -- it remains Closed in the FS8 admin. Any ideas -- this is driving me nuts -- and I think the answ…

I have a small FMP v6 network (5 clients) that is working off of Server 5.5. The server is running Mac OS 9.2 and all of the clients are Mac OS 10.4.2 In order to get rid of classic, I've started to set up another server machine that is 10.4.2 and cannot get FM Server 5.5 to stay operational. The FM Config screen has a button that says " Start FM config" or something like that and when the button is pushed, it appears to work for 15 seconds or so and then turns itself off. I'm very limited on my knowledge on FM Server and wondering if 5.5 will work with Tiger. And maybe I should upgrade to a newer version of FM Server. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any suggestion will…

Hi, I've burntt some nights without success trying to install FMSA7 on my W2003 server. The proble is, that I already use easy php (apache) on it. Since FMSA7 wants to use the crappy MS internet server, I have to use another P adress on the same machine for the IIS server. BUT, FMSA7 doesn't seems to like that. I only was able to make it work by diabling the pacvhe server and use only one ip adress. The problem seems to lie in the FMSA7 config interfce which does not allow to set correctly the second IIS IP adress everywehre. At some points it use the apache one. If only there was a config text file for FMSA7 settings I could bypass the FMSA…

Okay, so I have this client still running Filemaker Server 5 on a Windows Server 2000 network. I finally talked them into getting a separate machine for the FMS. It had been on one of the domain controllers. To make things easy, I just bought a cheap machine and put XP Pro on it. Then I put FM Server 5 on it. The machine is part of the domain and using DHCP. However, no other machines on the network can see the databases from Open->Hosts, even if I put in the exact IP address. Any ideas?

Does anyone know what would cause db files to become read-only when deployed on FM Server 7? If the server service is deactivated and we localhost the files, they remain modifiable. This has forced us to sideline FM Server until we can figure the problem out. Incidentals, everything is correct w/network sharing and folder permissions. Environment is XP Pro. Thanks!

Recently we upgraded our FMP server to FMP 8. We've run into some problem with our databases that were running just fine on FMP 7. One of the databases showed up in our event log last night saying it was damaged and being closed. Now we can access it, but as a read-only file. Is there a "FIX" program that can be run on the server to fix a damaged database and if there is how can we run it against this database. I'm not sure if this is where this question belongs or not, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if it should be moved.

I've simplified the approach since posting topic #170311, and I'm still having problems. I'm very unknowledgable of FMS, can't find any downloadable docs at filemaker.com, and am 3000 miles from my client (I'm doing all the work via Timbuktu). Problem: I can't make 'Save a Copy As' work on a server. Here's my proof-of-concept: I "sat" (virtually, via TB2) at a client Mac, and opened a FM file hosted by FMS 5.5 on their local server. I then used Scriptmaker to create the following one-line script: Save a Copy As In the Save dialog I designated the user's Documents folder as location, and "Custom Sales Report.fp5" as the name. I ran the script. N…

We have a folder containing a DB solution that starts from a Main Menu file located within the FM Server (5.5) folder (running on a Windows LAN). To make a shortcut so that the opening Main Menu file is visible in hosts on remote computers do we create a shortcut to the file or the folder...then restart FM Server...and/or should FM Server be stopped before doing it. According to the documentation, Filemaker Server 5.5 on Windows 2003 Server Standard Edition should be compatible. Indeed, I was able to install, also installed the patch to uninstall, and I can perfectly work with the FileMaker Console. But the FileMaker server.exe command prompt does not work... When I double-click this application, it remains open for a few seconds, but then this task is suddenly ended, before I can enter any command! Also on Windows 2000 SP4!

We've been having speed problems with a new database that began development with FileMaker 7. We are using the seperation model consisting of: 5 data files (multiple tables within each) 1 Interface file (scripts, layouts, relationships) The performance has always been slow, but we were told FileMaker Server 8 would be much faster, so we have been on 8 for about 2 weeks, and had minimal speed improvements. So, just as a test, I took the interface file, and put it on my local computer, and pointed the file references to the server for the data files. It ran much faster. One thing to note is that we are using hte Mac OS X Carbon and Aqua design, so there are …

I am new to Filemaker. I am switching from Lotus Approach to Filemaker Pro 8. I am hoping to get some help on best practices for setting up FM Server to get optimal performance. I have fm8 advanced for developing our system. I want to use the server version hosted on a loaded dell server that will only be used for hosting the database. We will have as many as 25 clients accessing information at any given time. There will be moderately heavy load on the server for searchs, and adding data to the server. We will be doing a lot of printing on clients with static graphic data that will be hosted on each client. Those are the basics of what we are doing. Any s…

Hi guys, I have a couple of databases that I have added to the server. It's all good, I can open them on the server no problem. However, when I go to a standard computer and use the "Open Remote File" it doesn't appear on that list. I close it on the server and open up the file - I note that the "Turn on Network Sharing to share your open files using TCP/IP" is set to On. Network access to file is set to all users. Strangely, as soon as I close and open it again, network access to file reverts to no users.. what the.. thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, first post here (sorry for the length) and sorry for the irritating cluelessness on my behalf. I have been nominated to put together a proposal to purchase filemaker products for a medium-large sized (~400 beds) hospital here in Australia. The small allied health department would like to construct a database which will be accessible to staff via the hospital intranet. Obviously they don't want to have to purchase 20+ copies of filemaker pro if they can get a web-hosted option together. Filemaker has been chosen as a possibility due to ease of use and the fact several staff members are already familiar with basic filemaker construction (myself included). …

One of my clients wants to take it up a notch and I was wondering if anyone out there had ideas suggestions. Client has 2 locations: One in Houstn, One in New Orleans. Currently each office operates it's own database sturcture that I developed at 2 seperate times. The offices are similar, but the DB's are unique because the business profle is a little differnt. Client now wants both offices to be able to connect into one "host" so all information is one location and accessed through remote connectivity. I was thinking of usingup FM Server (8) and remote users connect in through a T1 line using Terminal Server. I could develop a full blown web based soluti…

I developed a report-generating script which Exports a foundset to TempFile.fp5, Saves-As-Clone a template file SalesRpt.fp5, and finally passes control to a script in the clone, which Imports the TempFile. (The user then can play with SalesRpt.fp5, sorting and printing as he likes.) It all worked fine when I developed and ran it under FMP6.0.4 client. I'm having trouble when I deliver it to the customer to run on his server, and I'm unclear on what happens where in a server environment. In particular, I don't know how to control *where* the tempfile and cloned file get created. The database lives on the server and is served by FMS5.5. Ideally, however, I'd …

I typically use FM in a windows environment, however I have someone interested in deploying a solution in both Mac and Windows. I am considering the upgrade from FM Pro 6.04 to v8 and using Server 7 vs 5.5. After installing the demo, I would like to host several small datafiles. I can host and use them on my local network. I would like to access them via a remote (office) server. How do I add the remote host IP address on a client computer outside the office? This was easy in v5.5 just select specify host and add the IP address i.e. 68.59.121.134 but I do not see this option in server 7. Sorry, I know this is basic.

Hi all; I installed FM Server; As I understand we can run script files by fmserver admin. However, that option is always disabled in my software... My purpose was to run several files from which I am running some filemaker scripts in the files I am hosting to perform some daily or weekly checks and emailing issues... My first question is can we run FM files via this step ? My second question is: Is there any way to enable this option ? Thanks in advance Best wishes

Urgent. Has anybody had a problem with a file where the view to all the data in a table just disappears? You can even do a search on data, and it will return a found set of records, but ALL data is invisible. I have tried creating new layouts, tried looking at the data through new portals, tried exporting, recovering, Nothing. It has happended to two of my clients running both version 7 and version 8, on a Mac network and and PC network. FileMaker in Australia here say that it is impossible. We have sent them the files and they are baffled and say that these two customers are the only customers in FileMaker history to experience this. If you have ever seen it, or even f…

My FMS 7 is running on a dedicated Win2003 Server box and it supports two web servers, one each on separate MacOS X (Apache) and Win2003 (IIS). The web servers connect well to the FMS. However, it seems I can only get XSLT files to work if I put them into the Web Publishing/xslt-template-files folder. I'd like to have appropriate folders on the web servers that I can put XSLT files into, sort of remote template files follder. Anyone know how to do this?

I am running FM server on windows xp. It is a brand new dedicated machine which only has xp and fm server. I have set fm server to backup nightly to the hard drive. However, it copies over the old version every day so I have at most 1 backup copy. I would like to copy the backup daily to another directory (even another drive) and change the name. eg. file is database.fp7. Copies to C:fmdatabackup daily. Now I want to copy each day and make database080405.fp7 and database080305.fp7 and database080205.fp7 and place these in D:fmdatabackup. I would like to keep this as simple as possible. Willing to write a small script but limited experience. Thanks

Hello! We run filemaker Server Advanced 7 for 3 weeks per year at our college to facilitate our course registration and our Quality Management. Absolute low tech DBs. We run them on an eMac wit 1GB RAM running 10.4.2. Everything works fine, except that we have to break apart theclasses to register on different days because of FM-server Advances limit on 100 concurrent log-ons. I've tried setting up a proxy Server and setting this in front of the FM Server, but to no avail. Granted, I did this before we actually had FM Server Advanced running - did it with a normal client version. It worked just fine until user 101 logged on - then the entire web engine fro…

I can't seem to remember how to do this. Must be my first 'senior moment' I have a client running FMS 5.5 on XP They recently received a new license to increase the number of users from 40 to 50. Since I did not physically do the license install, I would like to double check it was done. Question One; How do I see the current registration number? In FMP client I can go to the 'About FMP' drop down and see part of the registration code. On the Server Console, the about FMP box is quite uninformative. Question Two; Most importantly I want to know my user limit before I reach it. How do I see my licensed limit? I know I can right click on …

FileMaker 7 Server on Windows. Main file with multiple related tables with simple relationships based on single key per table. Solution works fine. Internal script imports records from Table A to Table B. Script works fine when run from within main file. Most scripts run without any problems, finding appropriate pathway to host file on server and running without problem or user intervention. I'm running 1 fm7 database on FMS7 on a win2003 server machine (p3, 1 gig ram). With one client connected locally (LAN) I get speeds of 8-10 Kb/s max, wich is ok (still I would expect more from a 100mb/s network). My main problem is that I rarely get more than 4 kb/s and mostly 2 Kb/s when accesed from the internet (WAN). The connection is a Dedicated DSL with 80 KB/s up and this is still with one client connected to the database. (encryption is off by the way on the server). In FMServer 5.5, is there a way to open an Administration window on the HOST computer similar to the "Remote Administration" I can run from the client computers? Is there a bullteproof way of setting this up? I went to devcon this year hoping to find some light on external authentificaton. We use filemaker in our videostore, have FMPro Server 7 running on a dedicated MacMini, 3 files open, accessed by a maximum of 5 computers (usually 2). The database was created about 5 or 6 years ago and it serves its purpose, but unfortunately we're not exactly advanced with FMPro, so please bear with me... Basically we have a "Members", a "Films" and a "Money" database, all film records have numbers which are entered into a Mask of the Members db when they are rented. On return, the fields (film number, date of rental and generated amount) are cleared and certain things are processed for payment and statistics. All relatively basic stuff, me thinks. Yet the s…

I posted once before, but decided to take a step back and post a more general question. I want to use the Photo Catalog template to create a Photo Database with more detailed fields. Am I correct in assuming the following: 1) Create the photo database from the template, then place it in the Filemaker Server 5.5 folder on our FM Server computer. This way, the Filemaker clients can "see" the database when you go to Open External File >> Hosts. 2) All referenced photos should reside on the network (in this case, a MAC server) so that all computers can "see" the photos. Is this all correct so far? My main concern at the moment is that some users are …

I am new to filemaker and made the mistake when installing FMS7 on my tiger server, that I also installed the FMPro7 software. Evidently this is a big problem as I can't get the web sharing to work (which is our primary need for the software). This server is also our webserver, but that is on a second IP, the first is to be dedicated to FMS7. Anyway, when I wiped out the Filemaker by search and destroy, I ended up corrupting my OS X web server. Is there a better way to remove the program, such as an automated way as there would be on windows. Even a clean reinstall still has problems, and FM support led me to believe that it was becasue I installed both server and cl…

Hi; I have been using fm7 since approx 1 year before. I am happy with FM. I made two different databases one of which is for laboratory optimization (15 people), and the other is for department optimization (100 people), I will host these 2 dbs from one MacOSX server G4... With FM7 it is getting difficult to host several files to this much people... So, It seems reasonable to buy advanced server at this point. But, to make bosses believe that advanced server is really neccessary, first I should believe it will be enough...Because, it is quite expensive and no demo is available as I know... In brief, I have two questions: 1: a) Will all the scripts …

We are serving a number of files on Server 7 running on a Server 2003 box. On a regular basis when using the Open Remote command, the Local Hosts view in the Open Remote File dialogue will not display the server. Changing the View to Favorite Hosts or Hosts listed by LDAP and then switching back to Local Hosts will get the server to display. This always happens on clients when Filemaker 7 is run for the first time but it happens regularly on all clients on an intermittent basis. So far I have suggested that all clients save the server as a Favorite Host but I wonder why Local Hosts has this issue. Does anyone know what would cause this and if there is a solution…

This happened last summer on a different machine: Server cannot be seen in Hosts list. Server is working (Dell PowerEdge 600/Win 2K Server/FM Server 5.0), and you can force it by specifying the IP address, but the host is gone by name. This loss did not effect anyone using the files at the time, but anyone trying to open a file hosted by that machine was SOL unless he knew the IP Address.

We are hosting 8 databases and have 15-20 users and web access. The database are hosted on a G5 dual x-serve, with 8 GB of RAM running Mac OS X Server v10.3.9 and Filemaker server advanced v7.3. This is a dedicated server with no other applications running. We have been running these database for a month with no issues. Yesterday the speed of the databases where fine in the morning and dropped significantly in the afternoon. Today the first user experience a significant drop in speed after only performing 3 tasks (which included a simple find and viewing and updating 1 record at a time). Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for as the culprit to the d…

Hi there, I have a problem with exporting to *.tab files. I'm running 3 databases on a separate filemaker server which are controlled and hosted by Filemaker Server 5. The clients which connect to it are Filemaker Pro 5. I have several functions in one of the three DB's which make it necessary to export and import records. Every function is at least done once manually tot set up an Ex- or Import order and then the script is adjusted to disable the dialog box and make the procedure fully automatic. Now here's the problem. When this database is hosted by a client an others connect to it, it works just as fine with the export and import functions. But when this…

I work for a small company and we want to upgrade to Filemaker 7 Server, we are also in a position to purchase a new server to host our email, website, and data storage and replace the 7 year old boxes we currently have in place. Here's my question we are going to purchase Windows 2003 Small Business Server Standard, FMi says they only support 2003 Server Standard Edition, I have been told this is because Small Business Server comes with an Exchange server and it may cause conflicts with FMP 7 Server. Has anyone successfully run 7 server on a 2003 server box configured with Small Business Server? Thanks

I would like to use our Filemaker members database as the only store for email addresses and make those addresses visible to our desktop email clients. I am thinking that this should be accomplished through an LDAP directory of some sort but am clueless as to how to make this happen. We are running Filemaker Server 7 hosted on Windows Server 2003. Seems like their ought to be a way to marry Active Directory with our database so we don't have to maintain our list in multiple places. Can someone give me some pointers...I am new to this stuff. Apologies if this is not the right forum for this post.

I'm running a simple 2 file database hosted on FM5 Server (on a Windows network). With all other files on the server I can change user through Access Privileges remotely. On the DB above I can open Access Privileges but the options are greyed and I can't change them. Even working directly on the server I can't change them. Any suggestions please. Thanks Stephen

I was recently told there was a built-in feature in FM 6 Server that could automate backups -- I don't have a copy in front of me; so I wonder if anyone could enlighten me to this feature? Does it exist? Does it exist on the Windows side? Can you target another drive on a network, etc.?

Hi all! We've just bought a new fms advanced and we've read about using one processor to serve our databases in our LAN and the other one for WPE. I'd like to know if you could use both processor to serve databases in the LAN, I'm afraid not,... Are you able to serve several databased stored in several servers? Any comments?

I have the FileMaker Server 7v3 running on a Windows 2003 Server. I was able to connect to the server via the FM Server Administrator Console until I changed the Client Authentication Method from "FileMaker Accounts Only" to "FileMaker and External Server Accounts" using the Domain Groups. I do require a password for the Administrator Authentication. I was able to use it to connect to the server for administration from the server or remotely until the change. Now I only receive "logon failed" when I type in the Administrator password. I can use the domain groups to remotely access the database. That feature works great! Why would the Client Authentica…

I went through the postings I found but still don't know what the problem is... Sometimes it occurs that "...maximum numbers of licensed users are currently using this copy..." (you know) appears when a client starts FMP7 (.0v3). Is this still something FileMaker has to fix? I can't see any problem here...we're running FMS7.0v3, every client got it's own copy ov FMP7, server settings should be fine...so what is it?

I have set up a container field in my database and store .jpg pics of clients in this field. I am using fmp 5.5 on a windows system. The files are on the server in a shared enviroment. I store all the files on the shared drive on the server with "Store only a reference to this file". Sometimes the picture shows up and sometimes I get the above error message. Also, teammember A can add the file and then no other teammember can view the file. I'm sure this is a simple solution that has been addressed many times before, but I haven't run across the answer yet. Anyone out there that can help? Thanks

Windows Server 2003 environment, using authentication against Active Directory, everything works fine. The question/issue: We can authenticate domain users (DomainA) to FMP Server 7 in the domain the FMP Server is installed, however, users in (DomainB) do not seem to be working. Both domains are in the Active Directory trusted forest. Admin users from one domain can log into the other. FMP Server however only seems to be authenticating against the one. Thank you for any thoughts!

I have 2 users using an identical config, iMac with Filemaker 7.03, OSX 10.4.1. One one them periodically has an issue where typing comes to a crawl. After typing a whole sentence on the keyboard, only about half of the sentence is actually entered into the text field. Very slowly, the rest of the characters come in. Both users are accessing the same networked database. Quitting and relaunching FM seems to temporarily fix it, but it happens at least once a day. Has anyone experienced the same behavior? Could it be an OSX 10.4 thing?

It seems my FMP Server 5.5.v4, Mac G5 1.8 GHz, OS 10.3.9 insists on corrupting or otherwise refusing to host the files it has been hosting for the past year with almost no previous problems. I've tried many things including repairing the hard disk via disk utility in OS 10.3 journaling mode, repairing preferences, flushing system cache. After each reboot I can launch FileMaker Server Config and click "Start Server". The indicator changes to say the server is running but soon reverts on its own to the Start Server button. when I click the button again I get the message "Unable to start server. Another instance of FileMaker Server is already running. Requested command …

Hi, heard of a few people who updated to 10.4.2, after which their Server 7 Advanced was disabled in the sense that they try to either show the databases (fmi/iwp) or the configuration console (fmi/config) in the browser and get 'page not found'. Has anyone done the update already? I think I'll wait until I see that FMI confirms it should work ;)

Hi all, We're running an FM Server 5.5 under Windows 2000. I understand that keeping "windows file sharing" turned off is a big time requirement. Coming from a UNIX background, I would like to install cygwin so that I can run an sshd server on the Windows 2000 box so I can make backups from a UNIX-based backup server [currently the FM Server is making local backups to a separate directory on the same PC via the FM backup function]. I would like to know if installing sshd is considered 'safe' since to FileMaker Server. I assume so, but I wanted to check with the wizards here first. Thanks, /vjl/

Hello: I am running Filmaker Server 5 on a Windows 2000 Professional server. We have 12 client computers on our network. We are losing connection to the host with the following error (Communication With The Host Was Interrupted (20). This usually happens at night and we discover the problem the next morning trying to access files. Also, sometimes we are unable to open files and get an error that the file is Single User and cannot be opened. I've checked the Server's Application log and find the Message (User No Longer Responding, Connection Closed (17)). This seems to happen in the evening at about 9.30 pm and the message is repeated for all client co…

I have around 40 files sharing via FMS 5 and FMS is configured on Windows 2003 server. I have no idea why the performance of the files were extremely slow when the file running on FMS. As I have tried open a same file directly on my computer and running a same script, it will only take around 5-8 seconds to complete the whole process, but it took more than 1 mins when a file was opened via FMS. And, same problem when modify the fields in [Define field], it will take around 30 mins to recalculate the fields for around 7500 records (file size is 170MB), but it will only take 5 mins if opened a file locally. Is it the FMS itself problem? How to fine tune the…

I am hosting about 45 filemaker databases on a filemaker server version 5. Ever since I set up the new server people are getting disconnected. The error they are getting is as follows: Communication with the host has been interrupted and could not be re-established (-20) Any idea what could be causing this error? I have it set up so that it doesnt disconnect them if they are idle. It is now doing it more often even when people are in the middle of entering a record. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hello, Would FMS 5.0 run on Mac Mini? I already own FMS 5.0 for Mac/Win. We are losing our Windows NT server. Though we have a Linux server, upgrading to FMS 5.5 Linux is expensive and the software is hard to find. I would rather buy a Mac than Windows computer. We don't need a lot of performance (the Mac Mini is much faster than our Windows NT dinosaur).

Since upgrading to Tiger, I am unable to paste a file name into the Save Print dialogue box. I save graphic files from FileMaker as postscript files that are distilled. My script copies the file name and when I click the print button the print dialogue window opens so I can past the file name in the the save window. This process worked fine in Panther, but since upgrading to Tiger, I get a beep sound when I try to paste the name. This happens for both FM 6 and FM 7. Has anyone experience this problem and figured out how to fix it? Thanks in advance - Sam

I am running 2 filemaker files on a filemaker advanced 7.03 server running on a WIN 2003 server. One has 37 tables and holds the majority of all of the data. The second file has 10 tables and is used as a dumping ground for a data exchange between a MySQL database and the main Filemaker database. The main database is also quite large. The largest table has 700,000 records and is still growing at a good rate. At times I have had some serious issues with script running and never stopping or just running far longer than normal. Three weeks ago I did a recovery and then created a compact copy of those recovered files and everything seemed to be a lot better. …

I have a simple AppleScript I would like to run 30 minutes after my backups to copy them to a removeable drive if the drive is mounted. Simple enough in FMS 5.5 but when I create a script in FMS7 that is to run script file, choose my AppleScript that is saved as an application, nothing happens. The AppleScript copies the files fine if I double click on it in Finder and I have checked to make sure fmserver has permissions to read and write. Any clues???

I installed server 5.5 on a Dell 3Ghz processor, w/ 1 GB of RAM, and 7200 RPM drive. Filemaker is extremely slow when we open it. On the original pc we already have it running and it is fine, that pc has half the RAM and a slower processor and the same speed HDD. I also installed all database's (total of 18) into the FMPRO server 5.5 folder. Is that where they are supposed to go? Even accessing the database from the server Filemaker is unbelievably slow. **UPDATE** Currently I am not even starting the server up. I just open FP 6 for the clients and use my pc as the host (I open Filemaker 6 first). So lost, please help. Any suggestions?

I have Filemaker Server 7 hosting filemaker files on Windows Server 2003. My data base consists of one master and 12 related tables. On occasion, one of the related tables is not accessible and I get the following message on the client. "Filemaker has been forcefully disconnected by the host. All attached windows will be closed. [from administrator ""]. After I get this message, the only way I can access this file again is to "Reboot" the server. If I try to open the file with filemaker pro 7, it rebuilds itself as if it was open doing a system power failure. All of the other files in my database remain accesible. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
