FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. Please help, I have just installed FileMaker Server 5.5 on our Mac OS Xserver machine and am trying to "serve" some files on our LAN. We have a mixture of Macs (some OS X and some OS 9.2). The problem is that the Macs running OS 9.2 can not "see" the files being hosted by the Xserver machine while the Macs running OS X can see the files being hosted. I don't know why this is (I am a Filemaker newbie) and really need some assistance. Thank you in advance for ANY help.

  2. I have a database that contains data as well as images. It is hosted with FM Server 5.0 on a Mac with OS 9.2.2. When a Mac laptop with a secondary monitor at a remote site logs on, the data is visible and editable, but the images are not. When the secondary monitor is unplugged from the laptop, the images are viewable (on the laptop monitor). Does anyone know why this happens and how to fix it. My client can't unplug their secondary monitor every time they want to see the images. - thank you

  3. Hi everyone, I hope you can help me with this one. One Mac with Webstar 4.5, Lasso plugin 3.6.6, Filemaker 5.0.3 and Webcompanion 5.0.6 on Os 9.1 Another Mac with Filemaker server 5.5.1 on Os 9.2.2 serving all databases The first lasso page using an inline is served ok. But Webstar won't listen anymore to more requests. And it hangs when i try to quit webstar. But when i open the same databases directly in filemaker client, then there is no problem and every page is served ok. So it seems that the link between client and server is behaving strangely. I tried switching from appletalk to tcp and back. The same problem is occuring with fm server 5 but …

  5. OSX (10.2.3) running Filemaker Server 5.5v2. Serves up files just fine. However my backup schedules do not run. I read the install instructions before loading to the letter. Logged in as root and installed program. Restarted after install and logged in as admin user and started Server Config. Served up the files from the Server App Folder (like was said to do). I have created different B/U schedules backing up the files to different places on the harddrive plus an external volume and none run. I attempted running it by the pulldown menu Run Schedule, but that too does not initiate action. Nothing in the log other than people logging into differnt DB's. Any sugg…

  6. from: http://www.filemaker.com/products/fm_requirements.html "Our plan is that the new FileMaker 6 line will be our last developed for Mac OS 9." Why would anyone with FMPro 5.5- and Mac OSX+ want to invest in FMPro 6? Why not just wait for the version to be written for OSX+ Or does 6 really have that much more to offer? It's still single-threaded without queueing in ScriptMaker isn't it?

I'm sure this issue has probably been addressed at some point, but it's sure new to me. If I'm serving a FileMaker database to various users across a network, how do I handle users who need to access the databases from somewhere without a network connection (like from a tradeshow booth)? Is there a way to dump all the data from a served "online" database down to a local database that can be browsed "offline"? Obviously, changes couldn't be made to the "offline" version because then the databases would be out of sync and all kinds of headaches come to mind. Any thoughts are appreciated.

  11. I develop and support a registered database that is used by non-profit organizations in 22 different states and resently a couple of these states have encountered a problem that while working in the database suddenly all the users will lose connection with the server. After the users each shut down and restart they can get back into the database except one table gets 'lost'. Sometimes this can be fixed by stopping the FileMaker Service on the server and restarting it. This problem has happened in 3 states, each having the problem with a different table. One state has had this happen quite often and to the point that the table gets damaged and other tables lose data. …

  15. I tried everything suggested in the previous post. I am running FM Server 5.5 on a Windows XP Pro Machine and I want to back up FMP files to a Novell Server across a Novell Network. Is there anything special I need to do. I've tried to set up an account to log on to the remote machine, but I can't figure out what FM Server is actually doing when it attempts the backup. I get an error every time that the remote volume was not found. I've tried UNC names and mapped drive names and nothing works. I think that the workaround described in the knowledge base works in Windows networks, but not with Novell Networks. Any ideas?

I wonder what the "network kb" in the usage of the remote admin means. I use the server speed statistics from anatolifrom one of his earlier posts as my reference. The only thing which is poor in my statistics is the "network kb" (around 300). What does this mean? Does this depend on the hardware - the design of the files or simply the amount of data you send over the network (the more you send, the higher the number of network kb?) Another speed problem is finding results over calculations. Sometimes it's not possible to use indexed, stored calculations. (ex. total of invoice). Does anyone has suggestions ?

If Server is restarted the file is open again. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be? Peter

Does anyone have a method of putting simulated, "worst case scenario" load on the FMP Server? We are currently planning on increasing the users from 20 to 120 in the next few months. We would like to try to simulate this if possible so we can see if any change in performance will occur. (both by user perspective, and server resources). We are using Windows NT Server 4.0 with FMP Server 5.0. I believe the server is quite adequate: Hardware Model = Compaq Proliant 1850R Processor(s) = (2) Intel Pentium II Ram = 200 MB Hard disk(s) = (3) 4.3 MB Physical Disk Disk Controllers - RAID config = Hardware RAID 5 NIC Model(s) = Compaq Netelligent 10/100 T…

I can acces the files, and add/remove data but when I go into Layout Mode and change something and go back to browse mode the communicatiuon is lost. It also happens if I add a field. Is complete remote administartion possible with Win2K Pro or does it absolutley need Win2K Server.

  68. I've been struggling with a solution which I'm building. It has a Main File which sort of acts like a Main Menu, and many secondary files which get called through scripted buttons. It was working great as I built it, but now that I'm ready to test it out on an FMP Server, it is giving me much grief. First, the scripts which call other files seem to be looking locally on the client's machine. So I re-scripted almost all of the links I could find to open a specific (Hosted) file where I hard wired the IP it should look for to open the hosted file. This made me quite nervous, in that my iMac running the Server gets its IP Dynamically. However, I figured I'd sort out tha…

Although fm says that win pro is good for 10 users, I understand that Mr. Anatoli has a better performance with a win pro version. Am I right or better start with win2k server greetings

When I click "Start Server", nothing happens. I then wrote a Startup Items, so that FMS starts automatically on reboot. Doing like this, it works - I can connect with clients to the server, but when I start Config.app, it tells me the server is *not* running!!?! Backups get done, but the remote administration always reports "wrong password", even when I type it in correctly! It seems rather strange to me. Has anyone else a similar experience? Or does it work for others in this same configuration? Any help is wel…

  71. I have Filemaker 5.5 v1 Server running on OS X Server (10.1.5) on a PowerMac G4 800Mhz Dual Processor 512MB for a small 4 file contact inventory database. The 5 clients are using Filemaker Pro 5.5 on PowerMac G4 machines running Mac OS 9.2.2. Does anyone have problems with this configuration or any issues with running Filemaker Server 5.5 on Mac OS X (10.1.5). I checked with Apple and Filemaker and they assured me that there are people running this configuration but it has not been certified. Please let me know if anyone has a personal experience.

  72. More FMS 5 woes. We run 5 Mac servers (OS 9.1) on cross platform 100 base T network. One server (G4 400MHz/128mb) FileMaker quit unexpecedly last week damaging some large files (40 to 112 mb). Did recovery, clone, import (the works). (even replaced the software) Now some PCs lose connection to server (no Macs). Host window cannot locate, but can ping server. Service will come back on eventually, then drop again. Sometimes one file, sometimes the whole server. All others users are normal. At wits end. Server set to 80 clients (40 active today) , Files 100 w/ 82 open. HELP!

  73. I have remote users accessing a database on our server from home. She claims that if her connection to the server is unexpectedly broken (even though the server is still running fine) she loses the data that she typed in during the session. My understanding is that the server caches everything and permanently writes cached data to file whenever the system is idle or when the system reaches the cache flush limit (which in this case is 15 minutes). So only a server crash would cause the loss of data... not an unexpected loss of connection to the server. Can anyone confirm or deny this assessment? Thanks, Tony Andrews

We are attempting to get a working online bookstore. We just tried to upgrade to FM server 5.5 on a Win2000 machine. The web companion is on an imac. After upgrading to 5.5 server, the web companion shut down about every hour. So we downgraded to server 5.0. The web companion shuts down once a day at random times. What is happening? Note: The win2000 server is a 200MHz machine that also runs IIS to serve up a folder of PDFs accessed by the bookstore.

  97. I am planning to buy FileMaker Server, but I runned a trial version and crashed at least twice a day. (error message: unrecoverable error (10)) I was told that this is a memory issue, and if I installed Mac Os X this wouldn't happen. (I am quite reluctant to install OS X, but I can't afford crashing, not even once a day) My question therefore is if I should install Mac Os X and go for the OS X FileMaker Server version (the computer that would host the databases is a G3, and the machines that would access the FM server are most of them G4, with Mac Os 9.2), or otherwise the problem above could easily be solved and continue with OS 9. Thanks
