Big solution built from ground up with v7. I discovered how to use PNG images and photoshop.. now I'm going hog wild with the buttons and such. Are these PNG images gonna turn around to bite me in the #@!# when I go to host this with Server7 over a LAN?

I know this is kind of a speciallized question, but I thought this was the most likely place to get an answer. I don't know if it even possible, but I want to export Filemaker data to a graphics program to automatically build simple figures, specifically geologic cross-sections and columns. This may be more of an issue with finding a graphics program that allows macro-like functions. Can anyone provide some advice? Thanks

Hello everyone.. I have a table named Policies... I have about 50 fields on it...They all fit and looks somewhat nice (If I do say so myself ). The problem is now I have to add about 10 more fields... But there might be a silver lining... On my layout there are 10 fields that only have to do with a certain company (meaning when I know I am using this company I use these fields..the fields have different calc for them along with field names... I have set up a resource table for all icons and sounds. I just found out that if the fields are not global they will disappear from a layout that utilizes them when in find mode. I am about to switch them all to global but before I do can anyone see possible grief with this solution.

Our users have been using my filemaker solution for 3 years without any changes. Now it's time for a change! There is now so much stuff going on in the database that I want to re-do the layouts. I was looking, in particular at the status area. Now what I would like to change is the rolodex-like section of the status area. I'm quite prepared to have a few buttons there, controlling the record navigation, but I'd like somehow to replicate the small button that can move users through whole sections of records, the sort of tab just to the right poking out of the rolodex thing. Hi, Since in layout mode FMP does not have any option to draw a tab view or stylist buttons I wonder if there is any software out there to do that. PhotoShop may be the one, but it is too costly. I just want to draw button or simple graphics for my FMP apps. ANy advised? Thanks

I just had my purchaser freak out on me after changing his layouts around... I changed the navigation buttons around, but he also hated the color. I'm just wondering what you guys think - I know it's not exactly pretty, but I wouldn't say it's downright ugly. As you can see from the screenshot, I use different colors for the main databases. It's not designed to be pretty, but functional.

I would like to have a table for all my icons and sounds, so that each record is an individual item. But I can not wrap my head around how I would call the resource up in a calculation. Currently I have resorted to creating a field for each resource. I have considered set portal row but that would be an extra object not clean.

I must say I adore FileMaker for providing an intuitive, functional arrangement for Tables, Fields and Relationships. And the ability in Relationships to display nothing from the Table Occurence, only the join fields, or everything (providing a cute scroll arrow at the bottom). I don't display anything on them so they remain compact and only expand to work on certain ones as needed. It is so easy to create, modify and simply develop in such an environment. It took a bit getting used to but now I wouldn't want to design any other way. I develop my solutions in both mac and windows and sell them as separate versions. I do all my graphic work on the mac side (photoshop) then develop the solutions on the windows side. The reason for this is mostly an issue of text variables being easier to adjust in the mac version after creating the solution in windows. The most annoying problem I experience is the color selection options available on the windows side is so limited compared to the mac options (ie no: color picker, web safe selection etc.). My FM 5.5 file has a lot of reports. Currently users have to go to a report layout and use buttons to choose the report they want. I would much prefer to group the reports and have users choose the one they want from a pop-up list or menu. When they select an item from the list, the associated script would be activated. A perfect example of what I am looking for is the "Jump To ..." menu at the top of the Right Brain forum on this site. Is there a way for me to associate scripts with items in a pop-up list using FM? The problem is it goes across (left to right) to about 3 A3 sheets but it will only print the first A3 sheet from left to right. Hi all: This is a weird one. I've got a layout where the user enters data for a quote, including the body of a short letter to go at the top of the quote. The client wants to be able to change the size of the text in the letter. Okay, no problem, right? When the quote is printed out, it is printed from a related file (where all the line-items for the quote reside) and the letter body is a related field. Of course, it is formatted to a particular font & size (Courier 12). I've got a script which copies the text in the quote db, then pastes it into the field (really the same field) in the printout layout in the related file. Here's where it gets wierd. If…

I have a DB of photos. Some of the photos are grouped which is shown in a portal along with the photo information. If you click on an image in the portal it will take you to that image and highlight it in the portal. But if you do not click the portal and just manually go to the next record the highlight will remain on the last clicked. So is it possible for filemaker to know the active record in a calculation without the use of a script. (see attached)

Hi all: I've got a bunch of printouts which the client wants to have printed with blue text, just like on an old mimeograph machine (talk about trying to stick with your legacy stuff...) and although I've formatted the fields blue in the print layouts, sometimes the fields do not print blue. Furthermore, I've just noticed that sometimes they do not print in the specified font, either. Hi, total newbie here, im trying to put a graphic in my database that is also a button,when i click it i would like it to show another graphic in its place that when clicked will return to the original graphic??

When using <<fieldname>> in a layout, some of my number fields appear with a $ in front of them in Browse mode...And, none of the non-merge appearances of that field anywhere in the database are set with that type of number format.and, I have changed it to General Format, and leave data as entered, etc, ....I am also particularly challenged on merge fields where the Define Fields creation was a calculation (number).....??---if I am only using it as a merge field in layouts where can I create or change the "numbers formatting"...

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can make a record "invisible" to certain level users after they have entered it? Specifically, a user signs in, is taken to the entry layout, inputs into 8 or 9 fields, then chooses "complete" from the status field. Upon choosing "complete", I want them to no longer be able to access the record (not even to read- it should "disappear"). The VPs who will handle the case will have access but regular users will only be able to enter into new records. (Medical field, sensitive data, etc., etc.) Thanks to any suggestions! Anna

Well it seems to be back for the time being, so I'll sneak in a question or two. I need to have various windows sized to fit on various users' monitor. I've read enough to know that the way to force the size of a window in FM is to create a blank layout and then put a rectangle object on it the size that you want the screen. Switch to the layout, zoom to the rectangle to force the size of the window, and then go back to the original layout. (This is one way to do it at least. There may be more, but I've got this…

Hello everyone. Since FileMaker still refuses to give us a good Aqua UI, I'm trying to mimic Aqua controls and elements. I use Interface Builder to create buttons, tabs, etc., then take screen grabs, and edit them in Photoshop. So far so good. I'm having one slight problem, though. Can anyone tell me if FileMaker supports image transperancy? If so, what image format should I use? I've tried importing PNG, GIF, and PICT. Transperancy doesn't seem to work on any of them. I'm creating a layout that contains an image field and a text field that usually has several paragraphs of text. I am having a seemingly intractable problem with unwanted white space on my layout. I want to print a catalogue of contact information - a very straightforward listinf of names, numes, etc. This is sort by County, and some counties have more than one program to list while some coutnies have only the sentence "There are no programs in this county." The data itself is basic things like names and email, plus one field of"description", which varies considerably in length. Also, of course, some programs don't have text in each possible field (for example, no website). These are all printing on top of each other; no columns or portals or fanciness. I have set …

Hello, I created database for sales. One for product with taxe, one for product without taxe, one for the inventory of products and one for the sales. Everything works great execpt for the receipt. I need to print the receipt on a thermal printer. In the database for sale, I created a layout with portal of product with taxe and an other one with product without taxe to compile all sales of the same billing. My problem is that I don't print on a Letter format, it's a long printing depending of the number of itmes of the sales. Senerio: Purchase order system using one layout for all departments. This layout has a repeating price field of 75 cells (uses the sliding/printing function). Some departments should not see the pricing entires. Because the font color can not be dynamicly changed (from black to white) I will have to 'mask out' the price fonts from behind using a graphic (similar to a maxicode bar code pattern)in a separate repeating field using the cells as containers. Problem: Setting the background field as a calculation, how do I bring in a pattern for each cell used in the pricing field? (Pattern is in a gobal container)without have to write 75 statements.

If my Mac or Windows PC supports the HINDI character set, will Filemaker? Namely, could I have a field with English and a field with a Hindi translation of the english - and depending where I'm sending a report, print it out in either of the two languages? I am using Field A (14 pixels wide) with a pop-up list attached to select the entry. To view the entire list's contents the field would need to be 87 pixels wide. I only need to view the first letter. Three pixel to the right is Field B. It is a calculation field, with entry allowed, to join the text of two other fields. The problem lies in that when I select any field on the layout Field A's 87 pixel wide pop-up list covers the first 60 pixels of Field B preventing viewing the fields content. How can I set the pop-up list behind Field B unless called upon?

How do I display a specific image on a layout based upon the contents of a field? Making separate menu layouts for various levels of users is getting to be a hassle. I'd like to use one layout that works for all, but the buttons displayed would be based on the user's passwordd level. So that user pwd "Top" would display button image "Top", user "Middle" would display button "Middle" etc. Using this method I would be able to use the same menu for all and be able to show disabled buttons when appropraiate. I can't quite seems to this set up. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Hi All, i am currently setting up a labels layout. I have used the custom page sizes as it the label i wanted wasnt in the drop down. the label im using is Avery L7163 (99.1x38.1mm x14 labels/page). Now when i come to print out the lables only the left hand side gets printed of the page. There are two labels across the page, but i cant get it to print on the right hand label. Can anyone help on this? Thanks in advance.

I have a file of OS X Themes (buttons, etc.) for Mac OS X system. I downloaded it somewhere, but can't remember where (maybe FM Directory?). The themes are great and offer 8 different colors of buttons. However, several of the buttons have a lime colored line on the left hand section of the button. I don't know how to remove this line. I tried to do something in Illustrator, but my knowledge of that program is limited. Does anyone know how to remove these lines? Does anyone have this file without the lines? I know I've written this in a previous thread but I think people are a bit bored of the title - hehe I have downloaded the Hindi character set and restarted my PC. I can select HINDI as my preferred keyboard character set and write gobbldygook in Microsoft Word and Outlook - no problem. I cannot for the life of me get Filemaker to adopt the new language set set out in the OS - why is this happening? I have been through all the fonts list and none of them work with it so I am stumped! I just get a series of ???????? and nothing even near to he character set I want. please help! Thanks

I recently finished a project that I put this nice aqua look too. It looks great and all, at least to me. The main user of the database is colour blind and can't really see it well. He claims to need dark background and lost of contast between text and background etc (use it completly colour blind i think) My question is, has anyone else run into this? Is there any templates floating around made for colour blind people?

Hi Forum, One of FM's quirks has become a real asset to me. I thought others might be able to use it also. I create my own labels, headings, etc. using 3D text (by stacking 3 texts). FM has a nasty habit of changing labels which are generated when you insert a field onto a layout and have the box clicked that says 'Create Field Label' and you then change the field name in Define Fields! This used to *** me off ... now it tickles me to no end! Create a blank db with only a blank form on it. Create a text field with the first label name you need. Hi all, Within the same file, when switching from layouts to layouts, I'd like to have some layouts opened at 6,5 inches x 3,5 inches, and some others opened at 8,5 inches x 6 inches. A lot of my users have a hard time getting use to the fact that the mouse wheel doesn't scroll down in text windows, it scrolls through records. Somehow I turned this feature off in one of my databases...now I want to do it in another. Anyone know how to do this?

I am working on a solution that scores and tracks student test results (multiple choice test). I have two databases, test_key.fp5 and student_responses.fp5. Each test question has a unique identifier (concatination of test ID and question number). I have a one-to-many relationship established (based on question_ID) betweeen test_key.fp5 and student_responses.fp5. I have a simple calculation field (score) in student_responses.fp5 that checks the student response with the test key and returns a value of "+" if correct or the student's incorrect response if incorrect. Here is my math question. If I find a group of records I would like to count them in groups of nine. I think I have a way to do this but thought there might be a cleaner way. This is pretty simple concept. I have an invoice layout and only want to show data related to discounts if the order has had a discount applied. So if the person paid full price, I don't want to remind them that there could have been a discount by displaying a "discount" field title and empty field on their invoice. So the field title and field content should display only if the order has a discount applied, otherwise the space allocated for this information is blank. If anyone has done this and is willing to share the results, I would appreciate it.

FM 6, Mac 9.2 I am trying to exactly duplicate a Header part from one file in a separate file. Normally, I'd use the object size palette and set exact pixel dimensions. But an odd problem has surfaced. The zero point on the Graphic Ruler in Layout Mode (using pixels as units, though changing untits doesn't change the point) seems to be arbitrarily set to a weird place in the new file. In the old file, if I select the header part, the object size shows me that the header is 14 pixels down from the top and 14 in from the left. This looks about right, as the zero point on the scale seems to be in the upper leftmost corner. But in the new file, Object Size tells m…

I'm used to perform a zoom for my windows in every navigation script. I paste a blank rectangle in the background of my layouts that exactly fit the dimensions I need for the windows. But I never did this in list view. I've just tried to paste in the footer an object that has the same most-right and most-bottom settings as the usual rectangle, but this doesn't seem to work. The other day, I was looking at a Filemaker solution for accounting called "EasyAccounting with Filemaker". I found a very interesting implementation of user interface in this solution. They were able to dim fields, portals and buttons on the fly depending on what field or checkbox was filled. I did not know this could be done in Filemaker Pro. This is a great way to help users understand your solution and do error checking without all the dialog boxes saying, "You forgot to fill...". This is strange -- check out the attached screen shot. At the top is a green box, drawn in FileMaker. Overlaying it are some tabs, which are again just FileMaker buttons. They should be solid gray, but instead appear as nearly invisible outlines! Any ideas?

This is both a HELP request and a warning to other developers. Situation Machine Specs: P4 2.4GHz with 1GB RAM on XP Pro English Upgraded both my FMP5.5 Japanese AND FMP5.0 English versions to FMP6 E and J respectively. I'm creating a user list database and I have records that contain fields for company name, region (north east, etc), state, and city, and I've been trying to make the database as userfriendly as posible (lot's of buttons). Hi Forum If I use a merge field which combines several fields, it can end up being a lot larger than the resultant text. Usually this isn't a problem because I just position the merge field to center within the area and it displays fine. However at times, it is a royal pain because it extends too far to the right and either overruns the portal or overruns the layout or jumps to the next line. It's very messy and can cause the scroll arrow to appear on my layout because it extends too far to the right. Is there any way I can FORCE it to remain a certain size but leave the text size the same when it finally displays? I hope this question made sense and that so…

Hi, I have a database with quite a few checkboxes, so many in fact that it's difficult to see which ones are checked and which ones aren't. What I'd like to do is highlight the checked boxes in one way or another. Ideally this would mean bolding the text and/or check mark. Is this possible? Here's how you can duplicate the "Continue" and "Cancel" find buttons displayed in the status area when a user is paused in find mode; so you will not have to show the status area in your layout. Copy any portal (just the portal, without any fields) from another file (it can't be a portal from the file you are in!) If you don't have a handy file with a portal already in it, go ahead and create a new file and a portal. What portal you copy does not matter, as long as it is from another file. Paste the portal onto a layout you use for finds. You will notice the portal shows: <Relationship Missing>, that is what you want, don't assign it a relationship in Por…

Maybe Im just missing something, but here's my problem. I have 2 files. Dont ask questions on why Im doing this, there is a method to my madness. LOL. But I copied all the fields and labels and such from one layout on say FILE 1. Copied them to a new layout on FILE 2. Now with them all selected, I want to make them sit in the same place, so I look at the object size window on file 1 and set them the same on file 2. Now, they are NOT sitting in the same place. Here is why, on FILE 1 the VERY left hand edge on the layout starts at "5". On FILE 2, the VERY left hand edge on the layout is "18". PLease someone help to explain this and how to fix it. I saw a lot of fancy layout, but when I want to design my own layout, why can I just see some very simple components available on the right side, I even can't find the "check" and "radio" button there, I am now using Filemaker Pro 5.5. Do I need another version, or Just set some options? Thanks a lot

FMpro 6 in OSX, The manual says toolbars are not a supported in OSx. AARRRRRGGGH> Is there any workaround? Shareware? A tear off palette? Anything. Dialog baoxes are incredibly slow and inelegant. Help appreciated, Joe

Does anyone know why when I rotate text and change the color to white, the text disappears? I can change it back to black and it will be there, but not white. What the hell is that?? You can't have rotated white text?

Hey, we all (should) know that Macs rule graphics, and here may be another case... I create my image in Photoshop. I can select any active pixels on a layer, allowing me to copy much more than just a rectangular image to the clipboard. I paste the image either on a layout directly or in a container field; it shows up just fine... on the Mac. When I move to the PC, I get a stinkin' ugly white box where the invisible pixels were. Can someone offer me some insight on this? I have an 'Artist" database that I have included in this post. There are 2 layouts, "Artists". and "Artist Report". When you enter data in the "Artists" layout it then displays the spins in a column on the "Artist Report" layout as well as the week ending data in the header for that Artist. As we enter new records we date them exactly 7 days apart. What I would like to do is to get the "Artist Report" to display not only the current week ending date and current spins, but also the previous week ending data and the previous weeks spins. I want to be able to do a find for a particular artist, then go to the "Artist Report" layout…

I am a Filemaker newbie and find the "tab-style" interface (like the one used in the Aqua Template) both attractive and functional. I can't find any references on how to do this. Is FM6 required or can this be done in an prior version? Is there a how-to posted anywhere else in the forums or on this site? Any help will be appreciated!

Does anyone know if it possible to change the font color of a field on the fly eg. If someone selects urgent from a DDList box the font color in the the comments field will change to RED?? The solution I currently have implemented is from the previous post and changing the background color but it would be better if i could modify the font color

Basically, I need to have a multimple selections (in a portal row) for a signle record entry: eg. ------------portal------------------------------------- Worker| Products Used| [Jack] [ glue,tile,saw blades] ------------------------------------------------------ the reason for need of a vertical scroll is because the Products list is quite long (200+ records) any thoughts? Hi, I have a FM database and would like to create a value list so that when I click on it I can select a colour, for exmample the field is called Priority, I would like to click on it and select a red or blue box. Is this possible? Thanks in advance. Chris.

i am interested in creating a flash screen for when someone opens their db. however, when fmp is currently opened from being closed (it's usually kept open most of the time) the filemaker pro flash screen comes up, and i don't want users to have to sit thru 2 flash screens if i can make one of them my own, with the company logo etc... does anyone know of a way to turn off the default flash screen? thanks in advance...

Hi All, i think the gremlin says it all!! i need to print out (A3 Landscape) a report layout i have. problem is that it is wider than A3 so what i want to do is print the full lot (width) on several A3 Pages. eg. the width is 3, A3 pages wide but it only prints 1, A3 page wide! it's ok at printing down e.g. prints all records but wont print out all the fields across the report! can soemone please tell me what im doing wrong? thanks in advance

In one of my db's, the Align option in the Arrangement menu is greyed out. I've checked and re-checked the passwords and groups but have not been able to find the magic step that re-enables it. Anything I'm missing?

Coming from the world of web page design, I was wondering if there is a way to make an object on a layout in a filemaker database center to the window size, whether it is in a small window or maximized. This would be a great help on trying to make something work for cross-monitor resolution problems, whethere someone is using 800x600 or 1024x768. Why is it that FMP for Windows will only let me use arial, courier, courier new, ms sans serif, ms serif, and times new roman? On my mac, I have access to all the installed fonts. I understand that there are cross platform issues with using strange fonts, but is there some way of making FMP see all my fonts under windows? Can I use scripts to control the properties and presence/absence of layout elements such as buttons, fields and text? For example say I needed to have "SendReminder" button to appear only when overDue>1. If overDue = 0 the button should not appear the layout. How would I go about that? -ilya

I use Geneva 9pt and 10pt as my main text and Verdana for cases where I have limited width (in portals for example) and have some line entries returning a Bold entry. I use a Mac. Is Geneva cross-platform and does it use the same percentage of field space on a Pc and Mac? From some little knowledge of web page design I seem to recall 9points on a PC is about 20% bigger on a PC. Is this correct? Pete

I messed with the "report with grouped data" in the report wizard and the resulting subsummary parts, but I can't make it look like I want. Thoughts?

I have two fields, front and back. I don't have the ability to do duplex printing, so i already know that i'll have to print all the fronts, and then print all the backs, no biggie. Also know that i'll have to swap the left and right sides to make them match. But how do i create this in a layout? Should i use the label cretor, or somethign else? Thanks

Labels usually print the left column and then the right column. How can i reverse this?

I like kiosk mode. Sure, it has it's limitations - but the ability to design databases where I control every pixel appeals to me (as opposed to having to allow for windows task bar, etc which would mean I never know the users actual useable screen space). The databases I have designed have always been for Macs only and all with 800 x 600 resolution. Now that I want to expand my target users I will have to take into account different platforms and different screen resolutions. I have no problem working out the maximum size each layout can be, however there are some factors I can't control, namely: 1. On a PC, the user may be using Windows classic style or Windows XP style (or others?) which effects the useable height by 8px. 2. Hiya all, I would like to be able to have filemaker not show a border when i am in browse mode, i.e. when the field is selected, i get a black outline, regardless of the bordering of the field... is there a way around this?
