I'm new to fm and will use it as a photo database. Scenario #1: import alias of photo files and keep originals on the hard drive. Upside: Use less disc space. Downside: If I rearrange the originals on the hard drive I lose them in fm (as I understand it now.) Scenario #2: Use fm as the dateabase and store the original files there. Don't keep any copy on the hard drive. So, finally the question: Is fm a safe/stable place to keep these files. Is there any downside that I'm not thinking of? In the near future I'll be in the range of 100-200 Gb of files. I'm thinking of setting up fm on a 200Gb external drive.

Sorry if I got this question in the wrong spot. I don't know how to include an attachment to my posts. Each time I try, I get an error message that says I need to include a suffix such as .zip or .sit. The file in question right now is a 120 KB filemaker 7 file. How do I go about getting the fp.7 into a format that has an appropriate suffix? Thanks for any direction. Jarvis

I was using omnigraffle to illustrate the idea of a database I am planning to build. Omnigraffle has a style brush which copies styles by alt-clicking with the left mouse button and paste the style by left mouse clicking on the new object in the layout. was wondering if the same kind of funtionality exists in Filemaker pro 7 where by you need to select the format painter only once and copy and paste styles using click or alt-click ing on the objects???

Hi, Does anyone know of a shortcut key combo to open the "Define Database" dialog to a specific dialog? In other words, control+shift+D will open the "Define Database" dialog display showing the last tab that was selected when the dialog was last used. But I'd like to be able to open the dialog showing specifically the Tables, Fields or Relationships tabs selected. Thanks in advance!

I have several databases with 30,000 plus items in each. Each database should have matching inventory but they don't. I thought I could create a new data base that could compare the inventory #s from each of the other databases so that the same inventory # would line up across the page, enabling me to see the discrepancies. That didn't really work. I couldn't get the numbers to line up. Can anyone help me - by telling me what I'm not thinking through in this plan or with another idea about how to find the discrepancies. I have a web forms system which I created at home, and now want to host live from work. At home, I have a DSL line and just needed to plug my computer in and use my static IP in order to let people access the page. Now that I have moved the system to work, we can only get to it using the internal IP (192...), but not from outside. We have FMP set to use port 591 and have given that port a place on the firewall, but it looks like we have done this incorrectly. Are there certain steps to follow to be sure we are configuring the IP and port correctly? We are using sonicwall and are supposed to be LIVE by Tuesday! Any help would be AMAZING!!

I've just installed filemaker pro 6, pro 7 (multi-user licence version with at least 2 seats left), developer 7 and server 7 admin tool on a new laptop (Sony Vaio PCG-K315Z) running Windows XP Home (SP2) and a load of free software. Pro 6 (which we need for accessing current systems) works fine, as does the server admin utility. However when i try and run Pro 7 or Developer 7 i get the following error message twice. Hi Everyone, Could anyone please, please help...a militant developer who gained access to a FM database has somehow limited the access (to define fields, ScriptMaker etc), even we though we have the master password and is now holding us to ransom. Please no comments about using 5.5 or upgrading to latest version. I was given this copy and decided to get my feet wet. The box was originally marked for Mac OS X, but I was told the CD also had the Windows code on it. So, I inserted it and it installed perfectly on my windows xp system. However, like I do with all programs, I went to the FM site to see if there were updates, and found two.. one to bring it to V2 (which it says also includes V3) and another to bring it to V4. I've got a database with a field called number, which holds a number. There are 20,000 or so records. If I want to find the duplicates I just search using the exclamation mark find symbol. No problem! Is there a way to search to keep one duplicated record, and omit the other duplicates? Say I have 4 records with a number 365 in. When I search for ! it returns all 4 of those records. Is there a way for it to return just 3 of those records, leaving one of those in with the rest of the records?? Thanks Ben

Hello, Actually I am running Tiger 10.4.1. It may not matter but you never know. Here's my problem. I developed a 35 file solution some years ago. It was originally engineered in version 5. It has been updated over time and HAS been running fine in 5.5 and 6. The solution is being served by FileMaker Server 5.5 on a Panther eMac - only Timbuktu and FileMaker Server are on the Mac - it's basically a server running Panther client. Recently It seemed time to do some maintenance. I followed all the general proceedure, backup, test, etc. I then saved a smaller copy of each file. 34 of the 35 files saved fine. Some time ago, on fmforums, I saw an Amazon banner advertising Filemaker Pro 6. (This banner is still here offering FM6, FM7, FM6 Upgrade....) I clicked the link and found some offers of FM6 at prices from 30$ to 50$. The offer said (and you can read it today too) I thought that the low price was due to the recent release of FM7 and I considered that Amazon is a serious company so I bought some copies of FMP6. I just purchased Filemaker 7 and I am completely new to the environment. I am poking around in the program to get a feel for it. Question: In the inventory template that comes with the program there is a feature in the layout I can't figure out. There is a field to enter item for the item field. Above it in the layout the item text is displayed after you input it. If you look at the object in layout mode it shows <<Item>>. Recently while using FileMaker 5 and 6 on Windows XP(SP2) I have started seeing some very odd errors, and I have not been able to find out anything about them. It starts with this error dialog: Error::3014::EFPCLREG.C::InitializeCustomDataArea Unable to ParsePPD Then, if you click OK, this error appears: Error::1024::EFPCLDLG.C::OEM_BeginSession Unable to InitializeCustomDataArea Hit OK again, and the first error reappears, starting an endless loop of these two errors. I'm using mac os x panther, fm unlimited 6 and fm server. We are using fm for an ecommerce solution and for security we do not want all our databases to appear on the instant publishing home page. We have seen some documentation that says that this can be done by simply ending the database name with an underscore.. eg: database_.fp5 Sadly, this simple solution does not seem to work... our "databases_.fp5" are still visible on the homepage. Can anyone tell me an easy way to keep selected databases OFF our web publishing home page so that we are not offering up our customer information for anyone who cares to look at it? Using Filemaker 4.1 v1: I have 6 database files being shared on PCs (same version on all) using Windows 98 SE. ONLY one of those 6 shared databases exhibits the following problem and only a new laptop using Windows XP Pro: in every field where the text would normally end, it extends somewhat beyond the border of the field before wrapping to the next line i.e. the cursor appears to be located to the left of where it affects the text, each space (right arrow) width is slightly smaller than each displayed letter or number of text. Have you seen FileMaker application shows Greek alphabets? Sometimes when I type in something, it displays as Greek alphabets. Sometimes it just translates the whole message alphabets into Greek alphabets. I am not sure why it does it. Any ideas? thank you. Jackson

btw, I'm on Tiger, not Panther... Does anyone have experience with gigantamongous databases? I have a fairly beefy machine (PowerMac G5 w/ 4 GB ram, dual-2Ghz, SATA drives) and have had significant problems importing and working with ultra-large files. (My import is more than 10 Gb w/ more than 80 million records.) The files sometimes won't import at all, and even when they do if I try to index on a field it crashes the file and makes it unrecoverable. I've called FM, but apparently I'm in uncharted territory here, and they are not able to help despite their best efforts....

Newbie question I suppose, have tried searching but no joy... I'm using FMP7 to implement a fairly large database. At the moment, the form for entering information is 11 pages long when printed. In Layout view, the mouse wheel scrolls up and down the page (using FMP7 on Windows 2000). However, in Browse view the mouse wheel scrolls through records rather than up and down through the current record. Is there any way to change this - at the moment it is extremely easy to scroll to a different record and not realise it, thus entering information in the wrong place!

I have a database for creating internal invoices, whenever someone creates a new invoice the invoice number goes up by 1. However I have noticed that sometimes a number is skipped, ie; the invoice number goes up by 2. This will normally occur when 2 or more users are logged into the database. Has anyone noticed this? Does anyone know of a fix?

I have a customer who accidently deleted all the records in a critical table. Naturally, they have no backups. They have sent me their file, and I see that the file is still as large as it would be if the records were still there. I know that in other database applications, data records aren't removed from the file until a later time. I also know that in older versions of Filemaker, it was sometimes possible to read information in the data files directly. However, when I look at the new files, I only see gibberish. Does anyone have any experience hacking out the data from a damaged FM file? Is it possible to do? If possible, is it a major hassle? Thanks, David

I've been asked to alter the setup of set of db's currently being served out over the web by filemaker unlimited 6. It's not really a web/CDML question so please read on before flaming. Current setup/filepath is: Filemaker/Web/MyCompany/Clients.fp6. There's a couple of other db's within the "MyCompany" folder. What I've been asked to do is duplicate the "MyCompany" folder with all of its db's residing in it and rename that folder "MyCompany2" and place the Clients.fp6 db one level up to reside in the Web folder. This would act as the client db for all the multiple "MyCompany" folders that could be created. One of the issues of course is that then FM will be serving out …

Hi everyone. I've tried combing this forum and other sites for this info but to no avail. Is it possible to have certain words contained within a text field "link" or go to a different record in the file when clicked on? So rather than having a button go to a record, somehow make selected words in a text field do it. Basically make the functionality like that of a web browser in a way. Hello, I encouter some problems with SendEvent. For instance, if I use SendEvent(aevt;odoc;"winword.exe sometext.doc"), winword.exe will be launched in the FM current directory. The path of the current dir seems to be done by the last "file operation" : Insert File, Inset Object, etc. Is there a solution to get or set the FM current directory ? My boss asked me if this was possible on filemaker. I responded by saying I don't know, I'll have to do some research. Now I'm posing the question here. He basically wants to measure the amount of emails sent to particular email accounts. He wants that total and auto-updated into fields in the filemaker database we currently have. Im trying to preform a search on a calculation field whose definition is as follows: Indicator = GetAsNumber ( Feedback_Survey::UnusableRecordCount ) the result of this calculation yields a 1 or a 0. I want to perform a find to separate values of 1 and 0. My find criteria is simply >0 however this yields no results. I am no developer, but merely a one man operation who has self taught himself Filemaker over the last 10 years. In trying to convert my FMPRO 6.0 database over to FMPRO 7.0, many of my scripts became corrupted and will not work. Unbelievably, Filemaker either did not anticipate this problem or did not have the foresight to include the script debugger in the standard version. Hi everyone, Does FM Pro 7 allow us to lock the file at a specified time? For example: there are 2 users (A and : who have access to FM Pro 7 files that are stored in a server. User A enters some data and at the same time user B wants to enter some data to the same file too. What should I do to avoid conflict between user A and B? Hello- This might not be to difficult, but I've been struggling for a while now. I have a db hosted in Mac OSX shared over a LAN with several WinPCs as clients. I use FMP7. The clients in the WinPCs are not able to "see" many images in the Container Fields. Instead, there a message that reads "QuickTime and a TIFF (uncompressed) descompressor are needed to see this picture" or "QuickTime and TIFF (LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture". Now, I CAN see these images in the Mac, I figured the PC had something missing, so I installed QuickTime onto the PCs, but I still have the problem. Well, that's about it! My original file works fine. When I make a backup on a CD (Using Toast Platinum) the file becomes "unmodifiable," and I cannot change the privileges or, for that matter, use it at all. I.e., no new entries, etc.

I need to know how to generate a client number based on the record number. Easy enough. Problem is that they want some special functionality that is beyond me: Let's say we have records 1,2,3,4. With client numbers 101,102,103,104 respectively. We delete record 2(thus deleting client number 102), and rather than assigning record 105 to the next one that is created, they want it to assign client number 102 since that number is no longer in use. How would I do this?

I am presented with an opportunity to become a salaried FMP Developer of an organization but they require taking and passing the FMP Certification test. I am not sure if this is the right place for this, please move it to the proper forum if there is a better place for it. i work for a small company of 4 employees. 3 are at one location and the owner works from home. we attend many conferences over the course of the year and collect names and addresses of people who come by our booth. we have over 2000 so far and i foresee this # getting much bigger. I've got this problem, with a complicated database I sometimes need long table names or field names. Most lists for these are resizable, but filemaker doesn't seem to allow me to resize other views (the define fields pane is a great example). Am I stuck with these skimpy views? A user that accesses FM Server 5.5 via FM Pro 5.5 got this message "file nearly full" while in a file. The user was just starting to type when message was displayed. The user had to close FM Pro 5.5 and when the user tried connecting using TCP/IP, the server was not listed. I input the address of the FM server but nothing happened. I then rebooted the Server PC and the user was able to logon and see her files without any messages or errors.Why would this happen? Could it be a memory thing with the OS or a fluke?

Running a W2K Server test PC running Server 5.5. Running XP Pro SP2 on another test PC which is running 5.5 Pro. The FM 5.5 Pro PC(XP Pro)just had meta expert fonts installed on it using ATM. Now when accessing the FM 5.5 Server all the fonts in FM Pro 5.5 are not readable, looks like Egyptian characters. I uninstalled the meta expert fonts and the problem went away. Is there info somewhere to fix this issue?

Hi all! I am not a professional developer but working on simple project for my company in China. FM7 is working well with Chinese in data input, edit box and label. But when I create reports or use field other than edit box, the display of chinese character will turn to retangles... sometimes, part of the data is ok but another part is not... can anyone help? many thks. I am needing to deploy a custom CDML solution where users will basically be creating and editing records. There are no scripts called from the pages or that run while the database is used, nor are there calculations on the layout accessed via the web. There is one relationship and about 30 fields on the "create" and "edit" pages. I am wondering if anyone has any kind of metrics/experience about how well FMU 6 under Mac OSX performs over the web on a single server relative to number of users. In FileMakerPro7 I clicked on the Help Menu to look for something. A message said the English Help Files were not installed. It directed me to use the installer to install the English Language pack. I did not buy FileMaker Pro 7 yet, but I would like to know: Is it possible to integrate a calendar into the database? Because I want to use it to keep a list of the people on my paper route, with information about them, and also have a calendar integrate with the database ie. start dates and stop dates of service for a specific customer. And when I enter that someone has gone on vacation, it would pause adding on how much the person owes until they restart. Hello all, i would hate if i am wrong but i tried on my Mac and on a Windows Machine, and i am getting some weird things. I am on v3 at the moment. See attached File for my Examples, and let me know if it is the same for you. My user is running on Windows XP, and is complaining that he can easily lose the cursor when he is entering data. The cursor is small and it blinks very slowly. I suggested that he change that in the Control Panel but he claims it had no effect and since I am working on a Mac I cannot verify that. Is this a configurable option?

I am wondering if I can force the user to close a window only with a button I put in my layout. So the user can't use the icon in the corner of the window or the keyboard equivalent. Or is there a way to make sure that a certain event happens before the window closes. Say I have a popup window where data is entered. Before the window closes I need to write that event and the content of what was enter into a log record. I can make this happen by using a done button the writes to the log then closes the window. But if the user closes the window in some other fashion my write script won't execute first. Any thoughts? TIA

Forgive me if this question seems too silly, I'm a novice with Filemaker. I need two users to share access on our network to a filemaker database. We have Filemaker Pro 7. Can I simply place the Filemaker file on our File Server and have the two users open the file directly from their shared folder on the server? Or does the database file have to be hosted from a client machine running filemaker 7?

Hello- I have a database that has addresses. How can you make a field that would combine the text values of individual fields (like a merge)? For example, I have fields for "Street No." "Street" "City" "State" and "Zip". I'd like to have a calculation field called "Full address" that would combine all of these separate fields into one. I've noticed that files that are converted from v6 to v7 convert with a syntax like this: file:FileName The help file shows this to be the proper syntax: file:FileName.fp7 Both ways seem to work but I would think that it would be better to explicitly identify the file name including the extension. On the other hand, maybe this is a way of keeping solutions non-version specific. Any thoughts?

Here is my situation: Currently I have 2 files. 1. An interface file with one layout 2. A data file with 3 tables. The tables are: a. Machine shop b. Glass shop c. Electric shop The three shop tables have the same amount of fields, the same field name, and all calculations are the same. The only difference is that they are named differently. In the Interface file, I have created a layout call shop invoice. I am converting an Excel spreadsheet to FM Pro 7. There are about 21000 records but lots of duplicates. There are only two fields, Job ID, and Job Description. I need to eliminate all of the duplicate Job ID's but can't figure out how to do it. I have done a find for duplicates under Job ID, but it finds all of the duplicates, and if I delete found, it deletes all of the records. I need it to keep one record and delete the dups. Can someone offer any suggests on how to do this, other than manually. TIA Elliot

I'm currently on FM Pro 6 (full version) on Mac OS X and I'd like to upgrade to v7. I can either upgrade for $150 or buy the academic version for $150. But then I checked on eBay and saw some auctions where I can buy FM Pro 7 for $50 or less. They *say* that they guarantee authentic, unlicensed, never used, full version software. Still, I thought I would check here and see if anyone had any experience purchasing such software on eBay. Help! I have been using my database for years, now all of a sudden, when I create a new record, all is well till I hit enter, then I can no longer edit the fields, nor can I find the record I just created. When I do a find, it tells me no records match the request. All my other records are fine. The database is 24 mb and almost 23,400 records. Hmmm, have I hit a limit? What is happening? Thanks

Server Windows 2000-Dual Pent III 1ghz processors 1 gig mem. Client XP - Pent. IV 2.8 800 FSB - 512 Mem. FMS / FMP 7.0v3 Problem...After a user has been using the solution for some period of time they have been noticing a slowdown, specifically in the drop down lists. I understand that since most processing is done on the Server there is a slight lag time compared to FM6 (at least in the case of the dropdown lists). At first the dropdowns are relativly quick. I didn't believe it either! I made a db solution with several tables fields and all the standard stuff. One of the users recently complained that he had typed information into a standard text field, when he returned to the field later, the text was gone. "It just ate it" he said. lmao....sure it did! Well, I had to eat my own words, we run a spy program which takes screen shots every 15 seconds. I looked and sure enough he entered what he was suppose to, he left the record and created a new one and entered more information then closed the db went surfing on the web for about 45 minutes and when he returned, the text he entered in the text field was gone on one …

I am trying to keep track of peoples time. I have built the necessary 'case' so the calculated time rounds to the nearest quarter hour, but if you try and go from pm to am the calculation gets wacky. I have experimented with the MOD function as well as converting to numbers and then back to time. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks.

I have a custom dialog with an input field and two buttons. The first button, (which I have named to New) is button1, where OK used to be (so it returns 1 when you do Get(LastMessageChoice). The second button, called Return was where Cancel used to be (returns 2 on Get(LastMessageChoice). When I enter something into the input field, and click "New", the text enters into the my "Doctor field" fine and my script continues, however if you click Return, the text in the input field isn't entered into my Doctor field. Is this supposed to happen? I'm thinking FM7 thinks clicking Return is like clicking cancel so it won't enter the text in. If this is the right procedure, i…

I have tried this function on several occations and each time i use it i get the same results. the problem: I like using custom dialog boxes to obtain find criteria from my users. i also like to display dialog boxes to help the user know whats going on. thus when a found count returns empty or 0 i want to display a message saying there are no matching records and to try the search again. ive tried using if get(foundcount) = 0 and get(foundcount)>1 (in this case i was looking for an exisiting occurance of a unique value) each time this function does not trigger the if statement and the script continues on. any ideas?

Here is my problem: Table 1 is SYSTEM. Table 2 is COMPONENT. Table 3 is BANDWIDTH. A SYSTEM can have zero or many COMPONENTS. A COMPONENT may have zero or many BANDWIDTHs. I want to export all data from all tables, to a single flat file. If I export with my "focus" on BANDWIDTH, I only get COMPONENTS that have a BANDWIDTH, and only SYSTEMS that have those COMPONENTS. So, to export the whole enchilada as a single flat file, I need to be on the SYSTEM table, to export all local and linked data. The problem is that, in the export file, SYSTEM data is only in the first row of the export set. Each succeeding row contains data from COMPONENT, or both…

Hi all, I wondered if there is a way to "click" a button in the open database window by hitting the Return key (or Enter key) on the keyboard. This would be extremely helpful to be able to do. In a networked environment, is there any way to determine whether a user logs or times out of the system? I want to prevent users from accidentally logging out FileMaker by closing the last window of the database. I figured I'd write a shutdown script that pops up a little "Are you sure you want to log out?" dialogue if the user closes the last window. However, if the server kicks him/her off after being idle for X minutes, I want the system to skip the warning step. Any thoughts? Thanks! -Rob

I'm getting into V7 gradually. I was looking at the new Transaction Processing today (Open/Revert/Commit Record/Requests). The Open Record/Request does not allow for a Name or Id. Does this mean that we can have only 1 Transaction active at any time? Or, can we use Nested Transactions, and assume that the Revert/Commit operate on a Last In First Out method?

Hi all, I'm trying to run a script on a remotely hosted file (FMServer 7) by using the FileMaker's ActiveX functionality. I'm launching this from within a VBScript (Script.vbs). I'm open to using either native FileMaker authentication or external authentication. I can get it to run locally but it can't find the file when its hosted. I've seen the slow response in FM7 layout mode mentioned a few times, but no one seems to have confirmed if this is only happening in the trial version or in the final purchased copies as well. I just created a new file and tried to do some stuff in layout mode. Not only is the response when trying to move objects around the layout extremely slow, in some cases the objects would not move at all, not matter what I did. My monitor is only 1024 x 768 so I don't think that this is a high resolution issue as has been mentioned on some other forums. Does anyone have an idea what's going on? Hey guys/gals, is it possible to when specifying a backup schedule in FileMaker Server 5.5 to just specify a specific file instead of the whole folder of database files. When I select "Specify" and browse my MAC OS X SERVER for the FM DB files to backup, when I get to the folder, all the files are GRAYED out, making them unselectable.
