My solution opens several (6) related files on opening. Right now it simply goes to the Layout that has data from all the related files. As it opens, I have to wait several seconds for the screen to draw fully because it has to open the related file and then add that part to the Layout. Is there a faster way to get the related files open and consequently get the screen to draw faster?

I'm using FM5 & Win98. I have a field formatted with a value list built from a field in another database. This field always shows the 1st entry from the other database. Does anyone have a solution so that the current field is empty until the user clicks into it (so that it works like "hard-coded" value lists work)?

I'm getting a freeze / crash after the Initializing screen. It looks like it makes it past all of the fonts. Then the splash screen disappears, but nothing else.... "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program Vendor. FILEMAKER PRO caused an invalid page fault in module DDRAW.DLL at 017f:031b9d4a. Registers:...." Before I go rebuilding that machine, I thought I'd check to see if anyone had any ideas. I am setting up a database of images included in a catalog and would like to find some way for the image name to be automaticly entered into a text field when the image is placed in the container. Greetings- Just joined this list. I have had major failure in my FM4 Database. I have three tiers of records - Invoices, People and Books, and they are suposed to communicate with each other- when I click on a customer to create an invoice it was working fine, but when I entered the record # nothing showed up. The record was marked as sold however, but not appearing on the invoice at all. Also, when I click on the customer ( people) I want to view a previous invoice, the record again is blank on the invoice- yet I know there are several invoices for a certain customer- they all appear devoid of records. Now on a second pass - there are no invoices …

I can't seem to get the script Send Mail to work. The script Open URL(no dialog,"Email Address") with mailto:[email protected] in the current "Email Address" field brings up my Juno e-mail program and I can add subject and text and send that email. But the script Send Mail(no dialog,"Message") with To: specified as field value of "Email Address", cc: left blank, Subject: Text "Message", and Message: "This is a test" does not seem to do anything. (field "Email Address" field in current field contains "[email protected]")

I have verfied that my file size expansion problem described in my post below was due to an IsEmpty function I was using in a script that I had running automatically whenever my file was closed. When I replaced the IsEmpty function with an IF statement, the problem finally went away and has never been seen since. Go figure. This was a pretty big deal because it could have resulted in my file size increasing by about 1mb every week (in addition to other natural increases). In two or three years it could have grown to over a 1gb and this system could be so complex by then that I may never have gotten to the bottom of this problem. Praise the lord.

Hi Guys, I'm exporting records between databases using an intermediate fp5 file to act as a sorting house (i.e. export from database1 to fp5 file, and importing records into database2 from holding fp5 file). However, during the export from the first database I gain 14 blank records, everytime. Any suggestions for a reason? Thanks

I need help displaying data. Each record in the database contains, among others, fields for teacher number, period taught, course taught and period iteration (i.e., whether the course is the first among those taught that period, the second, etc.) I want to display in a table format the courses taught by teachers by period. The teachers should appear in rows and the periods in columns, with the names of courses in the intersections. (To complicate it, sometimes a teacher will teacher more than one class in a period, but that's not really a problem.) We are currently evaluating FileMaker Pro Unlimited for use within our company, and have found very few resources available other than marketing info. I have not been able to find any tools or utilities that would allow printing of various defined layouts from within the browser. Is the browser's print command the only method of printing from within the browser? Assistance would be much apprecitated.

I am just starting out with this file maker program But I have a question? In the demo Christian Thomas, the guy demostrating the product, had the file point to his local machine. How did he do that? I've got FMP 4.1. Everytime I open my database, go into layout mode, return to browse mode then close the database, the database gets larger by about 1.5k. because I've gone in and out of layout mode hundreds of times this database is permanently using up hundreds of kb just so I can have the privelege of using layout mode. What gives? What is using all this space for? An event log?

We have a NT4.0 server running FMS3.0, latest version, all clients running FMP4.1 latest version on W95/W98 and 1(one) client running NT4.0 client latest version. All print on a Brother HL-1270N networkprinter. Only the NT client has serious problems printing complex layouts. I only get data from a specific field, i.g. trailing grand summary, or the last record in a list. I updated all drivers, checked network and printersettings, copied settings from W98 machines and none of this all changes anything to the situation. Anybody recognising this problem? thanks, Wim

Ok, first, thank god for this forum. You guys are wonderful with the answers! Let's see if I can be clear. I have a ticketing system. When things break people are assigned to go fix them. It seems like I should be able to make a report that counts how many records each person has. Then the harder part is also tacking onto that an average completion time. (I do have fields on each record with time the person took the ticket to the time they finish) I can't even get the first bit to work, the grand summary. I must be setting up the fields wrong. Has anyone encountered concurrency problems (ie., two or more users attempting to edit the same record at the same time) with Filemaker3? I have a problem in a multiuser database which I suspect might be a concurrency issue. It occurs when a script in the main datafile runs a subscript in a related file to search for a particular record and then link the current records in the respective files. The script works as required most of the time. But, occasionally, the record in the related file that ends up being linked to the main record is the wrong one (always record no 1 in the related file.) I checked the usual things like making sure the script goes to the proper layout…

I have FMP 5 unlimited and am sharing a database via browsers. At times the web layout fields are interupted by underlying code, could be HTML/CHTML or CSS. The FM layouts are fine, only by restarting the server and getting every user to log in again results in the layouts being displayed correctly. Server and clients are running Mac OS 9.0.4 the Server has no other active apps running. How can I eradicate this problem?

I have a couple of time fields in which on the Mac with FileMaker 3.0CAv4 I can enter the time in a variety of formats, including am/pm like, "5:06pm". However the same fields in Windows FileMaker 3.0CAv3 will not accept times in anything but 24 hour notation (although it then displays them in am/pm notation as specified in the field format). In my Windows version, I have to enter the above as "17:06" or "17:06:00" to have Filemaker accept it. If I try "5:06pm" I get the message: 'The time in this field must be hours, hours and minutes, or hours minutes and seconds, and should look like "13:89:08".' I configured my FilemakerPro for web security. And viewed the security page in the browser. I am new to FileMaker. I want to tie 2 (or more) data bases together. For example, I have a client contact database already made. Now, I want to make a Project Database that is using possibly a client already in the Client Database. (Clients may have more than one project) When I make a new record in Projects Form, I am going to type in a certain Company Name. At this time, I want the Client Name, Client Address, etc, to pull up automatically from the Client Contacts Database to minimize typing. Also, the client may be new in this project. I need to setup a layout to print out a report that uses data from different databases. I am told that I need to print the report from the database in which the data lives in. To achieve printing a page with data from different databases, I believe I need to set up fields in my main database and import the data into these fields. Is this what I need to do? In our adress-file, we have a fax layout. Works fine with scripts attached. Make a fax, print and send it. No need to search for names, numbers etc. This is a great programme! But now "we" want to be able to save important faxes. Not in filemaker though, in our main 'server-computer' (I'm not sure what the english translation is. It's the computer where all the important main work is stored: the network) Is there a script thinkable that get's this done? Is there a script that enables the users to open the network-files to save a fax into a specific file? I hope I made this clear enough for you to help me on this one.... TIA ------------------ Yeti

I'm having a very unusual problem with printing text fields. The margin settings within the text field are not printing. The preview looks fine, but when it prints it is as though there were no margins set at all. I'm using Windows NT, FM 5.0v3 with an Epson Stylus 800 Color printer. My client is also having this problem using a different printer. Has anyone else ever encountered this one?

I have installed Filemaker 5 on a windows 2000 machine and cannot seem to get the shortcut to Define Fields (Ctrl-Shift-D). I can get other shortcuts to work like layout and browse mode. I have a sum field that when printed on the report, it is in a break field based on a related file. This works fine, however, I want to be able to calculate using two sum fields based on this break field. When I set the part to break using a break field in the current file, all works well. When I change all the settings back and sort according to the break field from the related file, the sums work but the GetSummary(sumfield, related sort) doesn't show any results. Is there a limit on the break field from GETSUmmary() that causes this not to work? I have FM5 for the Mac. When I make a container field, I can import Movie, and Quicktime, but not sound. Also, I remember in V.4 I could double click on the container field to have a record/play interface come up, but now that does not happen. Am I missing some add-ons? Has it changed? Am I silly-blind? I set 2 password to access a file. One for full access, and one for guest access, and in preferences I set the file to use guest access by default. I'm wondering if this is possible because it's driving me nuts trying to figure it out. I made a database to keep track of software serial numbers for people in my company. I made multiple fields for software title, version and serial#. So I made fields named software1, software2, version1 etc. I was able to figure out how to search through all the fields at once. Now I want to be able to list my search results. How can I accomplish this when let's say "photoshop" can be in field "software1" in one record and in "software2" in another record? Hi Chuck, I can't solve the "modification date problem" that we have discussed last time. As the field named "marked" is a numberic field, how can i attach a script to it? If i do that, it will become a button but not a field. After i click it (button now), the script run but the value is not shown. Finally, i can't achieve what we have discussed to achieve last time. Hi! I have inherited four databases that are used to track teachers' attendance at workshops. All four databases have a common field, namely the teachers' names. One database has all teachers in it, the other three have subsets of teachers. If I relate the teachers' name field in the "main" database with the corresponding one in one of the other three databases, everything works properly. What I need to do next is to relate the teachers' name field in the "main" database with the corresponding one in *all three* remaining databases, so that the information in all three is displayed (lookup) in the "main" database. I have FMPro 5 running on a mac g3 (OS9). I am using the basic web publishing (the default). it was all working fine and dandy until last week. Now I can't access the database via the web. The browser comes back with "socket is not connected". What's up - it used to work fine & I didn't change any settings (at least as far as I know)!?!?! I am about to update a system for a Car sales showroom (originally developed in FMP2!). I would like the new system to be able to find and automatically insert into various layouts a picture of a vehicle sourced from electronic camera and stored in common folder with filename eg "W234RVT.JPG" (ie vehicle registration number.JPG). My problem is how to get FMP5 to find the picture for an individual vehicle via a database field which already contains the unique registration number, except for the "jpg" bit. I setup my database using the web companion icon and it works fine viewing it in a web browser. The problem that I have is that I don't want users to see the data in the database. I want users to only to be able to create new records. If I go into the web security database and create a user with only the create option I can't connect to the database. If I give the user browse and create rights then I can log and see all the user files. Thanks for any help you can give on how to make the database function the way I want it to. Gary

Hi, We are using an EPSON TM-U210PD receipt printer to print receipt. We found it slow when using a windows font and the quality is not that clear coz' it's only 9 pin. I have 15 databases running on FMP 4.0 and serving the data to the web on port 591 on a Mac G3 using pages made in Homesite 3. The Mac keeps freezing - anyone else have this problem? Can it be happening when two people access the db at the same time? Or what?

I'm running FM Pro 5 on a local network, and I used the Server Administrator to close a file, then I did some routine maintenance on it (added a new field). When I try to open the file to the server, I get an "unable to open file" message. I've tried recovering the file and opening the recovered version, tried copying it and opening the copy. Neither works. Now that the file is off the server, I can open it in FM Pro, and it appears fine. How can I get the file open again on the server? ------------------ Dr. Stephen H. I have 2 files, one with data input daily and the other with data input once per month with one entry per month. I need a report that summarizes the daily number and also puts the montly (one entry) number beside the daily one for comparison. I have browsed through this entire Forum and was surprised to find no mention anywhere about possible Rounding Errors. I am using FM5 on both the Mac and PC. There are times when FM does not Round correctly to the nearest cent when using the dollars and cents format. This seems to occur when using a calc that first (Sums) the contents of several (Rounded) data Fields and produces a (Rounded) result. It has been of from 1 cent to 3 cents. This is in a DB developed for a county govt using valuations and tax levies and errors just can't be tolerated. Has anyone had this problem? If so, has anyone found a solution to it. Hi, I'm wondering what the best way is to share a database. At least one computer must have remote access to the database. The problem I found is that with remote connection the complete database is send when a remote data request is done. Is it possible that only the requested data is send via the remote connection. I have posted this questions many times but i don't get any answer at all. We have 40-50 FMP5 databases on our POS System that are hosted on FM5 Server. We have 5 counters/cashiers to access the database simultaneously. At various times, (2 to 3 times a day) FMP5 performs an illegal operation and damages some files. This problem is randomly encountered on all of the counters. I am tired of recovering damaged files and backtracking damaged records. I have an Epson Stylus Color 900 printer attached to my Power Mac 7600/132 - there is a known problem printing from FMPro 3.0 to this printer (Mac 'bombs' & requires restart). I have a field in my db called RctID. It's a calc field with number result. I'd like the db to always sort using it as the primary followed by Last name & First name so that duplicate records are thrown to the end of the db. This works beautifully until I quit then reopen. The sort order retains Last and First (even when there are no current records except a blank one) but RcdID is gone (even though it has an assigned number in the blank record). I don't want users to have to open the sort window and select the RcdID every time. Is there a reason why it won't retain the sort order leading with a calculation number field? we are running fmpro server 3.0 over a network with fmpro 4.0 (for the most part) on the user end. I've not had many problems with the setup until recently, where one client on a brand new dvd IMac using OS 9.04 is getting and error message "error in file "unknown"" when she is omiting records. It does it rather randomly with no specific rhyme or reason other than that. the error message says "sorry, filemaker is unable to read the disk this file is on. click continue to try again or click quit and copy this file to another disk." where it won't let you continue so you have to quit. We haven't had that problem with any of the other macs/IMacs we have running here, …

If I work on a record in the browse mode and then I switch to preview mode, it shows me the first record instead of the one I was working on. How can I change this? For the record: I use the tools in the toolbar to accomplish this. Is it advisable to get rid of this toolbar and let my users use buttons made by me? To control things even more? Using FM 4.1 on Win 2000. I have 3 different files: Orders, Blanket orders, and Credit card. I am trying to find a way to have any or all of these files let me know that the order is due today. I thought about using Find, but I believe that would have to be used 3 times once for each file. Is there a way to do one find accross all 3 files or some kind of script use here? I am more of a user than developer, so am lost as to how to accomplish what I need. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Our FM Server is a Mac and my computer is a Mac. However, I have clients who use PC. Avery labels created on my Mac are out of adjustment for PC users. In order to fix the problem, I had to go to my client's office and use his PC to make another label layout specifically for the PC. Now I have a label layout for the Mac and one for the PC on the server. Is this typical? Thanks for your reply.

I have a category value list and want the end user to only see certain values depending upon which category they pick. The end users also need the ability to edit (add and delete) categories as well as (add and delete) associated values within each category. I cannot, for the life of me, get this application to work. I have a filemaker database solution designed in Filemaker Pro v4.0. It's running on a TCP/IP network. I have a relationship set (in Database A) between two databases (Database A and Database : based on a code field. However in Database A I also have a value list that pulls values from another field in Database B. When you select a value another field in Database A looks up a cost in Database B. I am still building a database, and this started happening about a week ago. I have two layourts for a report, one is a form view, and the other is a table view. There is a botton on both that takes the user from one layout to the other. Now sometimes when I press the button to goto the table view layout, it goes to that layout BUT the header part is not there. When I switch to the layout mode and select layout set up, I only have to close the setup window and go back to the browse mode, and the header is there. I want to share some of my databases over TCP/IP through filemaker. Some of these databases are shared with web companion, others are not. These other databases I would like to view in filemaker from a remote machine. The problem is that I am using a single IP address from a cable modem which goes through a router to share that IP with all of the machines. My web servers and everything else gets shared out to the web through port mapping. I cannot find anywhere the port that Filemaker TCP/IP database sharing uses. Anyone know this port number? or numbers? Please help!

I know I've asked this question already, but I've never gotten the correct answer. They say that you can turn of Browse when setting password options. I've gone into the password dialog box, set a password, but when I click on Browse to disable it, it doesn't turn off...at all at all. I asked the question here, and someone told me to just lock the layout or something. What I want to know is why the browse doesn't turn off when I click on it, how to turn it off, and what will be the situation when I do-with regards to getting records and such. perhaps a really stupid problem: FileMaker unlimited is online. Web companion is running ok. everything works over a browser. But now we want to directly open the database with another filemaker via TCP/IP from another place via web. By clicking "hosts" an putting the IP-Adress, no connection can be built. I have a client that has numerous locations across the country. Each location features a FMP DB running through Windows NT and FMP Server 3. At Several locations everythime we close out of the server to edit the DB the documents are all changed back to Single User status. We then have to close down FMP Server and open each document and change them back to Multi user status. Sometimes it appears that when we change ti to Multi user it doesn't hold and we have to return and change it a second time. Any ideas?

I am working on a purchase order database. The person that originally made the database used FMPro2.1. I have upgraded to FMPro 5. The problem I am having is that the items on each PO are in a repeating field format. I want to extract data to see how many of what item in a certain time period the company orders so that I can set up the max. min. stock levels. If the item I want to look for isn't on the 1st line of the repeating field, thenI get bogus information. Is there a better way to go about this than using repeating fields???

okay, if you noticed, i posted earlier about extensions not loading. . . just so you know, the following problem is from a different computer. . . I have a database in which roughly 40 - 50 new records are entered daily. Right now there are 3122 records. . . the system unexpectedly crashed. On startup this file says it may be damaged and needs recovery. Did that and according to the dialog box, everything went smoothly. How can I put the current time in a global field when a script is run? I have a global field ("Last Update Time") defined as time. I'm back with a new problem. (You out there Chuck?). When I was trying to put together my new database, I kept looking at the layout of another set of relational databases (many to many and very complex) that some hotshot created a while back. I tried not to touch anything, just look at how they were put togeterh. That is I checked value lists relationships, filed names, and formats. I came across something new recently. I had a script that would only work when I inserted a Pause/Resume script specified as indefinately for the duration after a script step that set a field. I couldn't get it to work without the Pause/Resume step, even if I set it to pause for one second instead of indefinately. I spoke with another developer about it, and he suggested that I use Exit Record/Request, which worked. He said that he had come across such behavior on occasion with FileMaker, and to make sure it didn't happen, practiced the habit of putting an Exit Record/Request step after every Set Field request.
