FileMaker Legacy fp3 and fp5

Just curious if anyone has tried to run some version of Filemaker on the Lindows OS?

I have a layout that has a space problem and need to consolidate some of the buttons to clean things up. Is there a way to have a popup field show scripts and when you click on a given script, the script is performed? I have seen solutions where you select the script from a pop-up value list and then click a button to activate it. That works, but is there a way to just click the script without having to click another button to activate it? Thanks, hj

So I installed version 6 on my Mac running OS8.6, and it won't open. Apparently, it can't find a file named "MPLibrary". I called the folks at Filemaker, and they said that they were aware of the problem, but had no solution. Downloading the 6.0v2 fix didn't help. I don't know about Mac OSX or the various Windows versions, but for Macs running an OS lower than "X", DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT; YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

Please bear with me, this is tough to explain. I am using 6.0v3 on a Mac running 10.2.1. Everything was fine until I added the 8192nd record. With 8191 and a total line in list view, everything works fine. When I added five more records and sorted, the last four records and the total line disappeared, to be replaced by a copy of the first five records. They aren't really there, though. Selecting one of them and switching to form view shows the correct record, but I don't see it in list view. Table view works fine. It looks like there's a wraparound situation at 8192 records and I suspect it's a bug or program limitation since 8192 is 2 to the 13th power. Bad luck, I guess…

I would like to be able to take a PDF form and use that as data entry to a FM Pro 5.5 db. I would also like to be able to output data from FM Pro 5.5 to a PDF form. Is this possible? If so, can I connect them without using a Web server?

Hi, Did anyone ever experience wierd date readings on FileMaker 6 running on OS 10.2? I should add that the files are being served from FileMaker Server 5.0, but this shouldn't make a difference. In addition, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to the changes, because other date fields (identical ones) show up properly. For example: Date of Birth shows up as "1/12/2045" but is really "1/12/1947". FM 6 just added 50 years. But other date fields show up exactly as they should. BB

I was wondering if it is possible to connect Acrobat 5 (Mac) forms to FM Pro 5.5 (Mac) without using a web server?? If so, what are the steps involved? And if it cannot be done without a Web server, what server could I use with OS9.1 and what would be the steps from there? i have heard alot about filemaker 7 moving to SQL and not being devloped for mac os 9, but i have heard nothing about it being devloped for windows. am i just scaring people or can i take it for granted that they will be devloping it for multi platforms as 5 and 6 were. just a thought, as unfortunatly, we are currently phasing out macs but we are running a big filemaker db

Hi everyone, I am wondering if any of you have had this experience. I opened up a database yesterday that began shaking erratically as though it was trying to perform some operation and was confused at to what to do. No data ever showed up on the screen; only the database window with the tool bar at the top which was flashing and changing. any ideas on what may have caused this? thanks Chris

I downloaded a trial version of FMP6.0. Afterwards, my FMP5.0 files were routed through 6.0 to open (unless I opened the 5.0 program first). I trashed the 6.0 trial version, but now, all FMP files continue to try to go through 6.0 to open (stopping at an error message "6.0 can't be found"). I have searched for that isolated file that sends all files to 6.0 and can't find it. What is the cause of this, and how do I fix it? Thanks for a suggestion. Maxwell Morlay PS I'm on a PC.

I've recently set up a file for scanned images (2x2 slides). We have huge slide collection and I wanted to digitize and catalog these for easy access and use in PowerPoint presentations. After some reading I decided to link the OLE objects in a container for each record. This is supposed to decrease the file size as well as allowing for updates, etc.. I have found the file size to be about 50% larger than the sum total of all the scanned images. What is the deal with that? The few other fields in the file contain only a small amount of data. I don't know if this is just my system, but when I enter text into a field in browse mode and the text is larger than the field, the field gets larger with each character I type beyong the space of the field, looking as if it was adding a return above and below what I'm typing.... when I switch to the next field it stops looking quite so sloppy, but still it doesn't look like it's displaying the data correctly. I'm thinking this may just be because I'm using a non-English operating system, but has anyone else encountered anything like this?

I've been used a trial version of FM Pro 6 which expires in two days, and I still haven't received the registered version. I currently have a copy of FM Pro5. Will I be able to open my Pro 6 program and still work on it? I've read that 6 has some features 5 doesn't, and I'd be okay with holding on off on some things. I just don't want to be 'dead in the water.' Any thoughts?

I have never seen this the 'Find Processing...' dialogue box before, but one of my solutions is showing it just when switching from browse to find. (it is does not say indexing it just says processing). I do not think there is anything out of the ordinary, contact info and a couple of portals.

I have just set up 4 computers (4 licenses) on a network (IPX/SPX) with FM5 and installed my solution on the newest, fastest one. Once the host computer has opened the file two of the other computers access the file on the host just fine, however the third does not show any host when the host button is clicked. If I navigate to the file using explorer and click on the file to open (yes, I know I'm not supposed to do it that way) I get a message that says the file is single user (it's not) or the host could not be found. What's strange is that if the file is not open the "errant" computer will open the file as host. This leads me to believe the network connection is workin…

I have recently installed FM 6 updated to 6.0.3 running 10.2 on a G4 466. The problem I have is when I delete a field it takes forever, yesterday after 15 minutes of waiting I had to force quit.(the field I was deleting was not tied to a calc or script.) Has anyone else had this problem? Dean

Why not just buy the Filemaker sw on EBay ? I just browsed their website and found 21 separate deals for all verisons of Filemaker, even the latest version 6.0 . I am not an EBay user and no experience with online trading/buying/auctioning... Anyone here ever bought sw on EBay ? They describe that the sw includes all standard mfg's licensing etc. The prices were all about $$10 to $100 dollars less than FM's prices ! Dear friends, yesterday I have offered a Solution for a VERY BIG international company here in Bolivia, in the petroleum industry. The situation is this: They have an intranet with 150 users, and they want to share databases over it. The databases aren't complicated and the process of building them is easy (really), even being relational etc. I have tell them that FM Pro UL can do the job. IS it correct? I am running FileMaker Pro 5.5 on one machine with OS 9.2 and FileMaker Unlimited 6 on another machine with OS X. I am disappointed with the performance with OS X. Can this be improved by increasing the cashe? Right now it is set at 8192k. What would I set it too? One example of the slowness of OS X verses OS 9 is when I try to display and print photos in the database that are "store only a reference to a file". In OS 9 the are only a few seconds delay between opening that database and having the photos displayed (two per page at 5x7 size). In OS X the delay can be 15 seconds or slower. One of the other posts here notes a similar problem that I have encountered with FM 6.0 and 5.5 when running Mac OS 10.2. This problem did not occur under 10.15. Unless the FM application is already running, FM files that are password-protected do not open when they are double-clicked. These files *do* open if they are not password-protected or if FM is already running. This bug persisted even when I did a complete reinstall of OS 10.2 -- wiped the hard drive clean, etc. Can anyone else confirm this bug? Thanks, Rob

I have FMP v6.0v3 installed on a Mac running Mac OS X 10.2. I have a database that has a few layouts with up to 5 portals. The file is served from a Mac running 5.5 server on X. Three of the portals can have as many as 100- 400 items in them the other two have 1-3 records at any given time. The problem is that when I click buttons that set globals to filter the portals, the screen does not update. However if I minimize the window into the dock and then bring it back the data is there. So it seems I have a redraw problem. This does not happen in 9.x or on Win 98 with the same file. Any one out there having the same problem? Thanks, G

I have used FileMaker Pro for a few months, but still have lots of questions. I've created a file, A, which's used as a search window. I can trigger a script in file A, then go into a bunch other files to do the search. After the search, 2 scripts in file B, are being triggered. First script deletes all the records in file B. Second script imports the search results into file B. The import order is predefined manually. And the files I've mentioned above are in FileMaker Pro 6 format. It works fine until I change the search criteria or make a print in file A. Then I will receive a message from FileMaker. Basically, it tells me that file B is damaged. And it gives…

I hope this is the correct forum to be posting in! I am looking at the Invoicing database sample that comes with Using FileMaker Pro 5 book. Specifically the screen where you are creating a new invoice and want to selet the customer. The customers are display in a portal and are gotten through a relationship with the Customer database. How are they laying down the three fields pk_cust_id, c_company_name, c_contact_full_name to get them to display? It looks like one field, not three, but it also has a button attached to it? I would like to recreate this but I don't know how they did it. Any suggestions? Cindy

We have a FMP 3.0 Db that contains some letters that we send out to our members. On the letter, there are 4 fields that are lined up vertically: Date Display Currency Display Amount Literal, Amount Display Not every letter has a value for the Currency Display field so we would like Amount Literal and Amount Display to slide up to take out the empty space. No matter what I try, I cannot get the fields to slide up. I wanted to test my logic so I created a new Db with the same fields. I lined up the fields in the same way and set the sliding options. I then previewed it and it looks like it should. Has anyone else experienced this where sliding won't work…

Am I off track or is the "upgrade" to 6.0 a step back in some areas? For an example: Grouping and Ungrouping now uses "R" with modifier keys instead of "G" like virtually every other program, including FM5.5. Can't tell you how much time I spent trying to figure out why my key combo's weren't working. I can no longer Option-click-drag to create a copy of an object. I can no longer click on an object to select it then Shift-drag-click to add other objects to the selection. Hey Guys, I hope this is a no-brainer(Yeah, duh.) but I need some reassurance. I have a software workgroup configuration in which I am sharing 5 files. My question is.... Question: While hosting these files on the "hosting" machine in this software workgroup can you pull/copy data from the "client" machine into a local file without affecting the sharing performance of the workgroup? How does the 1 month trial expiration date in the FM downloadable sw work? Is there some script or FM file which does this ? Or is this a secret of FM that noone knows or talks about....? What language is FM Pro written in ? ie: C, C++, VB, Java what ? Compiled language? Is it written with some compile language even ? Does this help FMP run faster as far as we the end-user see ? Or is it made in some non-compiler interpreter script language like in Unix you have shell asci readable text scripts like Bourne/Korn/C shells? In a single file, is there a limit to the number of records or is the limit solely based on the file size?

I am creating a solution with many interconnecting DBs. For neatness it would be easier to divide the main directory of files into sub-directories. Is this advisable, I can see no reason why not but I have made the mistake before of putting files into completely different directories. If it would cause a problem the next question is why?

Hiya People, I have a dilemma about a project I am doing for a client. The client is using filemaker pro 5.5 client (non server) throughout their organization. I have been asked to redesign a database system to work best in a software workgroup. Currently, they have about 60 files in this workgroup and very likely sharing more than 10 files amongst 6 computers/users at once which is causing the expected instability. I have huge program to controll the University Student Affair Office. Some times if I want to delete a record, I cant do that. When I closed the fmpro and reopen it , then I can do. More specifically, when I want to delete a record if I want to see confirmation message, fmpro can not give thet confirmation message so it can not continue deletin operation. I am a part time FMP developer and have 3 clients running systems on v 5.5, where of course I still carry out maintenance and some development. I am about to start work for a new client , who has to buy v 6.0. I will be buying an upgrade to write the new system in v 6.0. The question is will v 6.0 convert the v 5.5 files to v 6.0, which will mean they will not run on the clients' systems ( they have no reason to upgrade to v 6.0 ). Can I keep 2 versions of FMP on my PC and just use the appropriate version ? SHould I buy a new licence of v 6.0 rather than an upgrade so that v 5.5 is not overwritten ? Thanks all.

Hi All, I would like to know the best way to copy a complete layout from one database to another. I have this system that is doing all the wrong things. It is running FMP 5.5 Client and sharing files and also mapping a drive in order to share hosting more files. It goes against everything FMP tells us about sharing files running FMP 5.5. There is no hope of getting FMP Server. Here's what is happening the main file populates a lookup file and that lookup file populates another lookup file. I want to copy all the layouts of these lookup files into one file. Instead of using multiple files I want it to generate new layouts within one database file. I am having problem…

Somebody please help this inferior filemaker user want-to-be. I have two fields: Feet inches For example, the data may be entered like so: 5 feet 2.25 inches 6 feet 1.75 inches 9 feet 11.25 inches 8 feet 6.50 inches All inch data will be in one-quater inch increments. If possible it would be great if it was more geared toward the Mac than windows as that's what I work on 90 % of the time. I don't know the first thing about XML but want/need to learn. Also, do you need to know HTML first or can you learn XML without it?

Is it possible to "host" a solution on a server using FM Unlimited and have "guests" access the files via a LAN without needing their own copy of FM Pro? If so, how many guests can do this?

Filemaker 5.5 (OSX) "unexpectedly quits" when I open a certain file but works fine with all other files. Addtionally, the file wll open fine with Filemaker 5.0 (OS9). I have tried recovering it but that doesn't help. Why, oh why? Is there an OSX preference or something that is problematic? I seem to remember a thread about this somewhere.

My brand new FM PRo 5.5 manual which I kept into my hands about 10 times, is falling apart. Pages get loose, the page binding obviously is bad. Do others also have that experience, or has there been used some occasional monday-morning glue in my case..? Harryk

I am new to FileMaker Pro. I currently have a copy of FMP 5.5 and have been creating a database to track the work we are doing. My boss would like to have this on the Internet so our customers can view the status of their jobs and submit new work to us. I am not sure how many people will access this externally. I will only have approx. 10 people access it internally. Can I do this with 5.5 or should we upgrade to 6? What would Unlimited offer me? I have a frustrating problem were when I start FM 4 the menu bar and pull-down menus are blank or displayed in a very strange way. The keyboard still controls FM. If you know where a menu item is you can guess on its' location and it will work. Also the layout does not display correctly, large portions are blank. Searched FileMaker technical database. Found references to fonts causing problems. I have reviewed, examined, replaced, etc. the fonts and have come up with nothing. Followed all the other suggestions I could find in that database. I have set up a script to zoom my window to the apporpriate size and set in my preferences for this script to run on opening the file. It is not working. I can run the script manually and it works fine, but not on open. Any ideas. I want my windows to be sized correctly all the time.

I have ten copies of filemaker PRO. One copy is hosting the files on a server. I have started modified my companies old filemaker and after creating some relationships, everything became slow. Not that is was fast to begin with, but now it's to slow. Some of my file are over 600MB. That seems like a big file for a desktop database solution. Would upgrading to Filemaker server help? If I spend the $700 to get a copy of server and it does nothing for us. My boss will not be a happy camper. Any input would be helpful.

I am looking at purchasing FMP now that I'm moving to OS X. I've looked at the demo, but one thing I would like to do I haven't delved into deeply enough to know if it is possible. Currently I use OmniForm to manage data for a two-page form we use regularly. For a given proejct, there may be 10 to 200 records for each form. Most of the data is entered on screen, other information is added by round tripping tab-delimited files to FoxPro or Excel. The forms eventually need to be printed and/or made into a PDF file using Distiller/Acrobat. Is it possible to create two input pages for an FMP database and have the two pages printed consecutively for each record?

I have two fields "StartDate" and "StopDate". What I would like to have happen is for both fields to zero out at midnight of the "StopDate". How can it be done? Thanks

I periodically do a "save a compressed copy" for the files in my application. Today after doing that, one of the files would not open saying "the access pivileges of this file appear to be damaged, contact FileMaker Inc." I had a backup so that is not a problem for now. But I am wondering if this file is heading south, and why would it be working before the "save" but not after. Thanks

I'm trying to create an image database... we are a landscape design firm...we have images over 1.5 gigabytes and will probably have over 2+ before the year is out... I am operating filemaker pro 5.5 on a peer to peer network...the images are all on one computer and when I save the image as a reference the all the computers take forever + a day to load... however, when i just import the images in container fields...it is fast... I have not imported all images...but I have imported about 100 as just a regular import and i couldn't even import more than 10 as reference files because the computer kept locking up... I was working on a database on a remote server whereapon the connection dropped out. after reconnecting I was able to make a copy of the file but was locked out of it. I can move it to the trash but it wont delete (the sever is on MAc OS9.2) and I am running OSX. How an I unlock this file?

I have FM 5.5 and run on both Mac and PC through FM Server. My problem is when I enter a field on the PC the curser color is the standard Black. But when I enter a field on the Mac the curser color is Yellow and is very difficult to see. Is there a way to change the yellow to black on the Mac?

At long last I am ready to start using my first prototype of a complex solution. I have about twenty files and a few hundred scripts. In order to start running this I am going to make a clone in a new directory. I know that I will have to save each file as a different name but then do I have to go through each file and change every script? What is the simplest way to do this? There is a part of the current project I am working on that I need help with... in even thinking about designing. I must make a db that will monitor attendance of staff members. Every day, the time cards are pulled and they must be entered into the billing system I am building. How exactly would you think to construct a db of this sort? It can pull the employee info from the employee db by employee number... so that's set... but there have actually been many occasions where I have wanted to add this kind of info to a db and not sure how to go about it. I don't want to make a field for every day of the year... or a field in the employee file with every day of the year…

I defined a relation to a file called "AMP Tour Settlement LineItem.fp5" in the Define Relationships its shows as "AMP Tour Settlement L#4CDF9.fp5" Looks like FileMaker chokes on file names longer then 31 charactors still. Anyone else noticed this?

Here's my trouble, I've got a FMWSC (from Unlimited 5) running on Mac OS X Server v1.2 via Apache. I've got several machines attached to this WSC, some Win 2000 PCs, an OS 9 Mac, and an OS X Mac... One of my PCs (a 1.4Ghz P4 w 256 Megs of Ram running Unlimited 5 and W2k Pro) tends to crash quite frequently (sometimes FMP will just quit...) anyway if it's down for too long (I'm guessing more than a couple of hours - I haven't timed it) The Web Server Connector looses the entry for that machine. So I can have someone on-site reboot the P4 and get the DB up, but it's still no use to my Web customers as the WSC doesn't know it's back up and running. Does anyone…

Here is what I'm trying to do... I have used FMPro to conduct a survey (each completed survey constitutes a single record within a single .fp5 file). The survey includes (among other things) 8 "comments" fields where participants can expand on certain survey responses. What I'd like to do is produce a report that will cluster/group all of a particular comment type together. So, if Comment #1 received 10 replies (out of, say, 100 respondents), then I'd like my report to display Comment #1's 10 responses together (one after the other) in a separate section of the layout. I am using FM Pro Unlimited to access databases that are hosted from FM Server. These databasess are served up using the Web Companion. Frequently FM Pro Unlimited ends up taking 99 to 100% of the CPU which forces me to reboot my web server. Can someone help?

Is there a way to have FMP create a log file of any changes that have been made to a db? We had some strange things happen to one of our dbs and we haven't worked on it for awhile. I was wondering if someone else got in and made any changes. A log file would be able to tell me when the change was made. I don't know if this is possible but I will take any input you can give. Hi I have imported some old fm3-databases into fm5, most things work by now but references based on relationships don't. the usually consist of an entry-field on first database which is compared to a formula-field on the second (formula works correct, i tested). While does worked in Fm2, i dont know why not in fm5. would it be a different index- approach? some references work partly, i.e. if i put in the surname only it's ok, but if I write "Surname, Name" (delimited by comma like it worked in FM2) it doesn't work anymore would really appreciate help, tried so much for nothing ....

I am serving out FileMaker 5.5 sessions from a Microsoft WIN2K Terminal Server. When a new user starts her first session and launches FileMaker, FileMaker displays the first-run dialog that asks the user if she would like to create a new database, open an existing file, open a template, etc. At this point, the user can check the "no longer display this dialog" option so that she will no longer see this dialog in the future, but I would like to set FileMaker to default to never showing this first-run dialog in the first place, and instead take the new user directly to the normal Open dialog box. Does anyone know how to do this? TIA, Brian

Have been using FileMaker 5.5 on a Mac on our local network. This machine is dedicated to serving up our database here in the office. The last week or so the host keeps dropping off the network. In other words, when I launch FileMaker from one of the other machines in the office, choose open, choose hosts, there is nothing showing up in the list. If I go and quite FileMaker on the server and then re-launch it...it works fine. But within hours it disappears again. This is a frustrating one...I cant seem to find the problem. Also, as a side not, when the host computer all of a sudden stops publishing the database on the local network, it is still publishing it just fin…

ok we have FM Server 5 with 30 databases. i want to be able to host them on the web. we have people that access the files via a FM client to dataentry and regular day to day things. i want to have people access the information via the web. i have no clue what to do. it's not like there are any instructions. where do i put FM Unlimited? does it have to have all 30 programs open to view on the net? what about server? i am very confused. please help Peter

FileMaker Pro 5, Windows Platform. I live in Russia. Initially the database was made and the data were entered on a computer with regional settings "English (United States)". When clients have started to be connected to this database from computers with regional settings "Russia" all data in a database, filled in Russian have a not readable kind. If on clients computers to establish regional settings in "English (United States)" all will be good but so I can not make because many programs in Russian cease to work. I manage a multi-user FM solution over a LAN like most FMForum users here. I'd like to see if anybody has setup a successful chatting system or message board that allows users to communicate to each other. I'm envisioning a sort of popup window saying something like new message or something. I realize FileMaker Inc. probably didn't have this in mind at all, but I'm just curious as to how expandable FileMaker Pro really is.

I receive a fatal error each time I open Smart Publisher (Pre1). Running Win98, database resides on a NT4 server. I believe it is related to a TCP/IP issue but I am new to FM and have no idea how to begin troubleshooting this issue. Any insights or perhaps a reccomended pre1 specific newsgroup?

I have two files [Contacts] and [New Data]. Both files contain the same basic information and are both FM 5.5 files. What I want to do is import the information from the [New Data] file into the [Contacts] file and delete the duplications by Phone Number. Thanks for your help...

Can anyone tell me how difficult converting FMP Mac files to FMP PC files is? I developed a set of five related Macintosh that were for tracking donor activity for a small non-profit charity. I would like to clone them, and then convert them to a PC format for another non-prof. Can I even do this? Will all the field definitions, scripts, relationships, and layouts make the transition intact? This is all volunteer work for a charity. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Is it just me, but the new feature set in FM6 looks rather thin. IMHO this must be a missprint. Should be FM 5.6 Fields in Dialog boxes Constrain found set Digital Image import is this a joke? Where are the new features? Seems like all the things that are 'new' could aready be done with plug ins, or a little thought in a script. Jerry

[color:"red"] I am new to FMP, using v4. All databases are web based and we want to put them onto a dedicated server. I know I have to change the port, but do I have to install Appleshare and put the Web volume on this server? Or can the web volume remain on the file server?

Any FSA members out there download their copy of FM6 from the FSA Members Only area of the FileMaker web site and try to update it with the 6.0v2 updater? I did and the updater won't work. It is looking for a file(c:WinNTInstaller47237f.msi) that is not on my Windows 2000 Pro box. Actually, the Installer directory isn't even on my computer. I read the doc that came with the updater and it stated that under windows you need the FM6 CD. Anyone know how to get the updater to run properly in this situation. I don't really need it, but I like to make sure I am using the latest version.

Got a serious problem when using 5.0 with share files on network (several fm5.0 install using the sames files) When trying to open the main file there's the error : "File may cause a general protection fault"... It's happen on each computers but not at the same time... One day it's the computer #2, another is #6... It'S never happen before with the same computers! Is there anybody here have an idea what is the meaning of this problem? Thank for all your help! We're using Windows2000, latest update...

I've been using fmp for years and I thought I knew it well, but... today I've found that a total summary field doesn't work properly. This happens with a shared database between 2 windows2000 PCs. The solution has been at work for years without problems but recently I installed win2000 to the "client" one. It must be something related with file sharing but I don't know how to fix it... I would be grateful if anyone can help
