FileMaker Server General Discussions

  1. I am using filemaker 8 and 8 adv in Windows. I am hosting the files on our server and opening them remotely. I have a script to save a pdf to a network drive. Every time I run it, it shuts down. Anyone else have this problem? Suggestions? Thanks

I need to run filemaker scripts for sending emails, making records, etc. at reguarly scheduled intervals in FMSA7. Does anyone know how to do this? I currently do this in FMP6 Unlimited with an applescript that is activated by iDo Script Scheduler. The applescript tells FMP6 Unlimited to activate the script at regularly scheduled times. I am running FMSA7 on Mac OSX 10.3.9 (panther). Thank you.

  3. Hi. I have most of my applications running under FM6, peer to peer. I have some apps under 7, slowly - very slowly, migrating over. I never installed Server 7. If I do, can I run FM6 applications under Server 7 besides FM7 applications. Then, I just got FM8!! Can I run 6,7,8 under Server 8? Mike

  4. I have installed Filemaker Server 7 on a Windows XP machine. When on the machine, I am able to open remote and open the file. However, from any client machine I am unable to do this. I have made sure the databse is open, and that the user group has fmapp extended privilege on. The box do not display on open remote is not checked. I do not know if there's a conflict trying to run this on windows xp or if there's some other kind of network problem. also, i tried creating a new database and the same problem occurred. I'd appreciate anyone's suggestions.

How do global variables (using "$$") behave in a networked environment (using FMP Server 8 or FMP 8 peer to peer) Are they shared accross the network or specific to the client computer ? Thank you Carlo

  6. I am having some difficulty getting FMS to start. Our IT guy installed it and I have access to view it from my workstation. I've tried opening in a few different ways. When I try to connect via the Server icon in the Admin application a box that says "FileMaker Server "(localhost)(our IP address)" is not running. Would you like to start FileMaker Server and then connect? I click yes and in a couple seconds it comes back up. When I try to connect via the Windows Administration Tools using Action>Start, I get this message: "The FileMaker Server 8 service on Local Computer started and then stopped. 7. Peer To Peer Sharing · Started by MichelVH,

I am sharing several databases via web and network with FMP7.1 on a Mac G5. I have a PC in the same bank on the network running FMP6. It cannot see the files that are being shared when the server ip is entered. Another PC running FMP7 and the other Mac running FMP7 see the files just fine. I tried removing the .fp7 suffix from one of the shared files but that did not help. Thanks in advance

FM Server 7.0v1 allowed Cache size to be set by available memory. 7.0v3 reduced the size of the RAM Cache, as a workaround for some bugs. For example, my Server 7.0v3 installation has a maximum cache size of 224MB on a Mac with 1Gig of RAM. Anyone know if the maximum cache size has increased again in FM Server 8?

If you have a smaller database (where small is defined as less than 5 files and 50 MB of data), would FM Server be necessary? Couldn't I just put the files on a shared folder and the 4 users who use it just run off that? What are some advantages and disadvantages? The reason I ask is because I am proposing FM to my company and I don't know if I should include FM server in it. Also, if anyone happens to know, I am looking for a live connection (real-time) to a SQL database. Can this be done? Pretty much every record that goes into FM also inserts into the SQL database. Vice Versa too. Every record that is inserted into the sql database through a differ…

  11. I've been developing in FMP and FMP Server, for 2 years now. I recently acquired FMP Server 8, and for the first time I'm facing a problem that is totally mind boggling. The solution seems to be working flawlessly, when using FileMaker Network sharing. Once the file is loaded in FMP Server 8, some globals do not hold their value. Most of them, no problem. Other totally lose their value. I had never encountered this problem with FMP Server 7.

Just curious, I had a fairly large solution programmed in FMPv6, and tested it over the WAN a couple of years ago and found it to be dreadfully slow. The server was using a DSL 512k upload connection and I was testing it at home with a 1MB download connection. For me the major amount of time was taken by the opening of the related files and switching layouts in different files. With the new 7/8 feature where you can design a FileMaker based system in one file with many TO's, I presume has made loading FM based systems on WAN quicker which = usable? Has anyone created a solution that they would like to share some of the design ins and out and best/optimal sys…

  14. I've been using Filemaker 6 for a while, and am looking to implement FM 8 at a non-profit that I'm working with. My trial version just expired, so I thought I would ask this while I waited for the org to get around to purchasing. That said, I'm designing the website for the org, and would like to retrieve information from the database for live reporting of statistics, or whatever, as well as potentially feed info into the form. Would I use IWP to accomplish this? If so, how do SQL statements from a page tie into it. If not, any suggestions. This is my first venture into using a database online. Thanks in advance. Greg C.

  17. I am hopeful that someone has an answer to this. I have a solution that is hosted by a provider over a WAN. I have multiple clients logging into this system on Mac's and PC's from multiple locations across the US. This solution has an image module that stores images as a reference. 23. When accessing a database hosted by FMSA 7 using a FM7 client, a dialog pops up after 15 minutes (the idle out time we set) saying that the file is about to close due to inactivity. This despite the fact that it's in use. Pressing Cancel dismisses the dialog for another 15 minutes, but it's a real pain and is alarming some less savvy users. However, for security reasons, we don't want to disable the time out. Why does FMSA think the file is idle? Is there a server setting which we're missing?

On one of my machines, whenever I open a file, it tells me: FileMaker cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using Filemaker Pro on this computer. ... and only allows me to say OK -- after which it opens the file, but does not allow me to share it. Te problem is that there are no other users using FMP on that machine. This happens consistently, even after restarts. 35. Okay, so I have this client still running Filemaker Server 5 on a Windows Server 2000 network. I finally talked them into getting a separate machine for the FMS. It had been on one of the domain controllers. To make things easy, I just bought a cheap machine and put XP Pro on it. Then I put FM Server 5 on it. The machine is part of the domain and using DHCP. However, no other machines on the network can see the databases from Open->Hosts, even if I put in the exact IP address. Any ideas?

Hi Guys, I've got a client who has a system created in FileMaker Pro 6. Im currently migrating the solution to version 8, but the main concern they have is the speed of FileMaker. At the moment, they have 3 users accessing the system, hosted by FMP6. I was thinking that during the conversion, I can sell them FMPS 8, if they see a significant improvement in performance using Server 5.5. Does anyone know where I can download a *Trial* version of FMS 5.5, or does this not exist anymore? Cheers

  39. Hi, I was using a Mac running with FMP552 and Panther to share databases online and the the local network. I have updated the MacOS to Tiger and FMP to FMP7. I have converted all the databases to FMP7. While the Websharing is working perfectly well, the network sharing is not working. When I try to access from a client (with a different Registration number of course), I do not see the databases even if I try to fill manually the IP address of the host. 40. Does anyone know what would cause db files to become read-only when deployed on FM Server 7? If the server service is deactivated and we localhost the files, they remain modifiable. This has forced us to sideline FM Server until we can figure the problem out. Incidentals, everything is correct w/network sharing and folder permissions. Environment is XP Pro. Thanks!

  41. Recently we upgraded our FMP server to FMP 8. We've run into some problem with our databases that were running just fine on FMP 7. One of the databases showed up in our event log last night saying it was damaged and being closed. Now we can access it, but as a read-only file. Is there a "FIX" program that can be run on the server to fix a damaged database and if there is how can we run it against this database. I'm not sure if this is where this question belongs or not, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if it should be moved.

  43. We're using FM7 Server Advanced to host a database to be accessed mainly via IWP (with some FM clients too). The database has scripts which check the client version and jump to client-specific or IWP-specific layouts and scripts accordingly. Today, we ran a session to test it for the first time under load. Our server - an Intel Xeon 3.2GHz with 1GB RAM (which isn't running enything else) - crashed several times when under load. The number of concurrent IWP users varied from around 10 - 50, all accessing from our corporate LAN. 64. Hello. My colleague is running Filemaker Server 7 on an Xserve, and is having trouble getting it to backup with Server's Scheduler to an external drive. For example, look at the screenshot linked below: http://dave.typepad.com/server_screenshot.gif Each Friday, we want to backup all databases to a folder named "Friday" on an external Firewire drive that connected to the Xserve (and so on with every day of the week). How do we specify the correct path in the "Back up Folder" field? Thanks. It's been bothering us for a while.

I am wondering what will happen when dates and times are entered in to the database. Will they reflect the current users location or will they be normalized to one time zone where the server is? If they are local zone based how will that look to the users when records have dates in the future? Or when users create records at about the same time but the times are grossly different. How would I sort records by date or time if they are scattered across all time zones? Could someone give me…

  66. I developed a report-generating script which Exports a foundset to TempFile.fp5, Saves-As-Clone a template file SalesRpt.fp5, and finally passes control to a script in the clone, which Imports the TempFile. (The user then can play with SalesRpt.fp5, sorting and printing as he likes.) It all worked fine when I developed and ran it under FMP6.0.4 client. I'm having trouble when I deliver it to the customer to run on his server, and I'm unclear on what happens where in a server environment. In particular, I don't know how to control *where* the tempfile and cloned file get created. The database lives on the server and is served by FMS5.5. Ideally, however, I'd …

  67. I typically use FM in a windows environment, however I have someone interested in deploying a solution in both Mac and Windows. My question is this can Mac users connect to a Windows FM Server which is the host. And can you still use the external server to authenticate users since Mac uses Open Directory and Windows uses Active Directory?

  68. i have a couple of databases that have related databases. i just want to be able to show the primary databases in the list of databases to chose from. the list is getting kinda cluttered. any one have an idea for a solution. thanks in advance.

Hi I have a network up and running using peer to peer (files on a server) and can access it through a vpn/internet connect fine. That is until I try usung a computer that is connected via airport. A list of the available files doesnt come up. EDIT:This is is true too for an airport connection which is directly off the local network (and not via internet) any Ideas?? Thanks 10.4.2 and FM7 (8 doesnt work either)

  70. I am considering the upgrade from FM Pro 6.04 to v8 and using Server 7 vs 5.5. After installing the demo, I would like to host several small datafiles. I can host and use them on my local network. I would like to access them via a remote (office) server. How do I add the remote host IP address on a client computer outside the office? This was easy in v5.5 just select specify host and add the IP address i.e. 68.59.121.134 but I do not see this option in server 7. Sorry, I know this is basic.

  71. I'm intrested in the script files you can run with server. Is this something you can make in pro? I was hoping to make some auto import scripts. I've looked through some docs, but it still is clear as mud to me.

  72. Hi all; I installed FM Server; As I understand we can run script files by fmserver admin. However, that option is always disabled in my software... My purpose was to run several files from which I am running some filemaker scripts in the files I am hosting to perform some daily or weekly checks and emailing issues... My first question is can we run FM files via this step ? My second question is: Is there any way to enable this option ? Thanks in advance Best wishes

  73. Urgent. Has anybody had a problem with a file where the view to all the data in a table just disappears? You can even do a search on data, and it will return a found set of records, but ALL data is invisible. I have tried creating new layouts, tried looking at the data through new portals, tried exporting, recovering, Nothing. It has happended to two of my clients running both version 7 and version 8, on a Mac network and and PC network. FileMaker in Australia here say that it is impossible. We have sent them the files and they are baffled and say that these two customers are the only customers in FileMaker history to experience this. If you have ever seen it, or even f…

Using FM7 and sharing a couple of files with other remote users. One of the designated users cannot get connected to the available files I'm hosting on my PC. She has the same access and privileges as any of the other users who connect just fine. When she attempts to "Open Remote..." she gets the dialog box with my PC's IPAddress but when she clicks on it nothing appears in the Available Files side of the dialog box. Our network guys tell me she has the same clearance through the router as the others. Does anyone have any ideas about what might or might not be happening properly? In advance, Thanks for Your Help. :

  75. My FMS 7 is running on a dedicated Win2003 Server box and it supports two web servers, one each on separate MacOS X (Apache) and Win2003 (IIS). The web servers connect well to the FMS. However, it seems I can only get XSLT files to work if I put them into the Web Publishing/xslt-template-files folder. I'd like to have appropriate folders on the web servers that I can put XSLT files into, sort of remote template files follder. Anyone know how to do this?

We are running Filemaker Server 7 and publishing a dB to the web using custom web publishing and XSLT style sheets made using site assist. There are about 950 records in our database. When I "Show all records" (max=25) and begin navigating through the list hitting the next button, I always get an error about 10-11 pages through the list. The errors on the page and in the logs read: XSLT-CWP: An unexpected error has occurred (null) File: /fmi/xml/fmresultset.xml The line and column fields are blank. Any suggestions? I am leaning towards a timeout of the results list, but can find no place to configure this. Thanks in advance.

  78. Does anyone know if the demo version (trial) has a built in timeout. After X hours the server stops without my command. I'm testing the demo version and want to make sure this does not happen in the real version. Thanks everyone.

  79. I recently set up a FM5.5 server that is hosting about 13 databases. When i open the d.bases from a client machine remotely, the server only shows 8 databases. I would like to know where is another 5 databases? I've checked the server, all 13 databases files are there. Thanks in advance for your response.

  80. I am running FM server on windows xp. It is a brand new dedicated machine which only has xp and fm server. I have set fm server to backup nightly to the hard drive. However, it copies over the old version every day so I have at most 1 backup copy. I would like to copy the backup daily to another directory (even another drive) and change the name. eg. file is database.fp7. Copies to C:fmdatabackup daily. Now I want to copy each day and make database080405.fp7 and database080305.fp7 and database080205.fp7 and place these in D:fmdatabackup. I would like to keep this as simple as possible. Willing to write a small script but limited experience. Thanks

Web server & FileMaker Web Publishing 7.0v3 engine running on Xserve with Panther 10.3.9. All is well with the database solution. Ten+ Filemaker clients connecting fine both internally and externally via FileMaker. We need to post some info via web for clients so I set up the FMServer on one machine and the web publishing engine and FM web server on our Xserve which already has our regular website on it. Then when i zip files and send to client he opens up the files under guest access and then gets the message filemake network sharing not on or available etc... WHY is this happening. 85. My client has moved to another city and has started another branch. She now wants to move her FP7 solution to a server. They are an advertising company. They will be filling container fields with PDF copy. There will be maybe for 5 client machines in one city, just one (Manager)at first in another... Questions: 1)Can they make do with an ordinary OSX machine, or will they need OSX server? 2)How (excuse my ignorance) will remote users log in? Using the server's IP address? Steve

  86. Hello! We run filemaker Server Advanced 7 for 3 weeks per year at our college to facilitate our course registration and our Quality Management. Absolute low tech DBs. We run them on an eMac wit 1GB RAM running 10.4.2. Everything works fine, except that we have to break apart theclasses to register on different days because of FM-server Advances limit on 100 concurrent log-ons. I've tried setting up a proxy Server and setting this in front of the FM Server, but to no avail. Granted, I did this before we actually had FM Server Advanced running - did it with a normal client version. It worked just fine until user 101 logged on - then the entire web engine fro…

  87. I can't seem to remember how to do this. Must be my first 'senior moment' I have a client running FMS 5.5 on XP They recently received a new license to increase the number of users from 40 to 50. Since I did not physically do the license install, I would like to double check it was done. Question One; How do I see the current registration number? In FMP client I can go to the 'About FMP' drop down and see part of the registration code. On the Server Console, the about FMP box is quite uninformative. Question Two; Most importantly I want to know my user limit before I reach it. How do I see my licensed limit? I know I can right click on …

  89. Ladies and Gents: I have been browsing thru several topics about the grueling process of FMSA7 intallation. I am running w2k, basic authorization under iis with wpe on one computer and fms7 on another. I had a problem with some databases not showing up under the "published databases" screen, so I added the fmsadmin extended privilege to enable it to do so...hopefully. However, when I did this, my FM Server wasn't recognized in wpe... and hasn't been recognized since--even after a reinstall of fmsa7. Do I really need to reinstall fms7 on the other machine? It's running great and hosting my databases without a hitch? This program is really a pain to install. I…

  90. I'm using FM server 7. I have a table that has 25,000 records in it, and I need to make related records in a join table. The two tables are related by a two-field match (ID and Date). I've come up with several ways to do it, but none of them work well, and I'm looking for hints on how to do it better. For purposes of discussion, assume the two tables are named "A" and "B". Also, table A has a many to one relationship with table B (i.e. multiple records in A for the same ID/Date combo), but I only want a single related record in table B. Method 1: Looping set field. Find all records in A with a child in B. Omit these, leaving only those w/o childr…

  91. I am looking into purchasing FileMaker for my company. It sounds like a great tool that would give us the flexibility to choose client/server types of deployments or web deployments. I am interested in your view points on what the best FileMaker software configurations would be for our situation. We are a small sized business that is hoping to grow substantially, so our budget is large enough for Server Advanced if required. Here's our situation: - We currently have 10 people who would need to access the final database. All 10 could potentially be concurrent. We are hoping to double this number over the next year and continue to grow from there. - We ha…

Can you run scripts on FileMaker Server 5.5? This may sound bit odd, but here's why I'm asking: I have a plug-in (Troi Activator: phenomenal!) that allows you to schedule things to take place (i.e. running scripts, backups, etc.). I have programmed my databases so that it'll do certain functions on a preset schedule, but these scripts have to take place on the server. Is this possible?

  94. I have a school that is upgrading there current FileMaker 5.5 system to 8. In the meantime, they want to have remote access to the 5.5 system until the new server with remote access is put in place. I installed FMP Server Config 5.5 on their OS 10.2.8 Server. We are able to see the files on campus, but cannot see them off campus. They do not have any firewall blocking this (they think), and the firewall hardware people say that port 80 is open by default. Is there an old thread about setting this up, or are there certain things I can look for to see if their settings are correct? I am assuming that FMP server uses a TCP port, and that I can turn on the Dir…

Hi there, I created a new database and since I was going to be transferring it over to someone else, within the File menu, under "File Options..." I changed the account which is used to log in. When attempting to open it, it doesn't recognize this account nor does it allow me (admin) to log in either. Is there any way I can get into this file, or have I just lost the entire thing since my last backup??

  96. FileMaker 7 Server on Windows. Main file with multiple related tables with simple relationships based on single key per table. Solution works fine. Internal script imports records from Table A to Table B. Script works fine when run from within main file. Set up utility files on client computer to run various reporting sctipts within main file during night hours using vbs scripts to open utility files. Most scripts run without any problems, finding appropriate pathway to host file on server and running without problem or user intervention. One file however, call an external script in main file which imports records from Table B to Table A. I constantly get an error message…

  97. I'm running 1 fm7 database on FMS7 on a win2003 server machine (p3, 1 gig ram). With one client connected locally (LAN) I get speeds of 8-10 Kb/s max, wich is ok (still I would expect more from a 100mb/s network). My main problem is that I rarely get more than 4 kb/s and mostly 2 Kb/s when accesed from the internet (WAN). The connection is a Dedicated DSL with 80 KB/s up and this is still with one client connected to the database. (encryption is off by the way on the server). Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get better speeds especially fron the internet connections and if yes, what do I need to do. I can understand that part of the database involves calculation and…

I'm grateful for any help I can get with the following: Running Tiger & FM 7 (regular, not server version) a) Normal Mac file sharing works fine but when you try to open the active file remotely, it can not find the open file. Typing in the host address (fmnet:/192.168....) , you can open the file but it is very slow to get going. The bigger issue is that there is a container field in each record with PDF files of each related invoice in the shared file. On the host, a double click will open them but it doesn't work remotely. They will open remotely if you open them through the Finder, just not through FM. I've tried the path: fmnet:/192.1…

Hi, Does anyone know how I can share the content (excel, word files, etc) inside a container with more than one user? I notice if more than one user try to open, say, an excel file inside a container, the second user would get a message saying it's used by another user. This would defeat the purpose of sharing information, which I find a critical shortcoming in fmp.
