Can anyone suggest why my quicktime files play fine on the host machine but won't play appear on the client machine during file sharing (file not found error) ? I have imported the file and not a reference to it and both machine have quicktime installed on them? It is a mystery to me! Cheers Colleen,

Hi there, i'm attempting to set up a bunch of database solutions for my office of about 5 macs which are all on airport wireless. I have FM Pro 7, but wanted to know if I'm actually supposed to be using FM Server 7...which I didn't know existed until this morning. So, i downloaded the trial...and i'm a bit confused as to what to do with it now...basically, how do i access my database files and work with them now? Is each computer supposed to have FM Pro 7 AND FM Server 7? I'm embarrassed that this is such a newbie question...perhaps if someone could let me know if there is a basic user's guide for FM Server 7, that'd be cool as well.

I'm having a strange problem. I'm serving a FP7 file. When I log in to the file, with the full access password, I cannot perform a find.. it tells me that I don't have the proper access privileges. But I have FULL access privileges, so how can this be ? What gives ? any ideas anyone ?? I called Filemaker... they said to try a different file.. hehe but... I would *really* hate to hear that answer a few months down the road.

Hello, I have a .NET application that I'd like to connect to a FileMaker database (version 7) that will be running on an OS X server. Is this possible? Limitations? I've seen something on FileMaker's website that says that FileMaker 7 running on OS X cannot act as a ODBC database server. Thanks for any help, Brian

Hi. I am going to be developing three separate databases that basically are identical. They are at three separte locations (possibly a fourth). We are not sure as of right now if we are getting the T1 line to tie them all together. The current plan is to run three separte databases and use a fourth 'master' to pull information from the three individual databases. Of course one would think, why not have one MEGA database and use the network for all 4. Well, first of all I am not sure if we are getting the T1 line, and I don't know much about handling that many people at once. Question (1). What do you think the best course of action is? 3 separte but equals, or on…

I'm trying to understand how and where to place plugins that clients can download similar to FileMaker Server 5.5. I have a plugin that the user needs. Does it work the same with FileMaker Server 7 in that the users will download the plugin on their extensions folder? Can anyone point me to some detailed instructions on this topic? Thanks. ron

Hello! At the office my FM databases are hosted on an iMac running FM Server 5.5, I want to connect to them remotely. They have suggested that the best way to do it is to call my broadband provider and order a static public IP address that forwards to the private IP address on the iMac. Then, when I'm away, I can simply go to "Open Remote" on my FM and enter the public address. Under this scenario I have two questions: 1. They told me I have to configure port 5003... How and where do I do that? 2. Security: What steps do I need to take to prevent a "hacker" from finding the public IP address and getting in? I'm the only one that will know it and use it but I'v…

We have a networked database made up of various versions of 5/6 we've bought over the years. It has come to a time now that we need to get a box set or vla to allow us to have to concurrent users running the database in terminal services. Is it still possible to get these for filemaker 5/6? I've seen this product on UK website cancomUK - I've ordered from them in the past and they've been fairly reliable so long as the item's in stock. http://www.cancomuk.com/products/searchr...mp;fromlist=yes Judging from the product description it seems like it's what we need. Though I'm suspicious about the price point

I have a multi-user solution shared over max 15 users - 10 all day using fms 5.5 With about 20-25 files - the total size of all files together is 60MB. I am considering adding a very useful feature to the main company database, but this will push the total database size up to about 250MB. It's a large calculation field that needs to be indexed to be part of a relationship. Is this still ok for our uses? Or will there be a significant impact on performance? Our database performance at the moment is fast. What kind of maximum total db sizes is a threshold for a degradation in performance over filemaker server? Are there any accurate formula that anyone'…

We have just introduced Server 5.5 into our small office, onto a file server running windows 2003 server.Workstations are on XP with FM6. This server business is all new to us here, and we are currently experiencing very slow connectivity on all workstations (e.g. opening files from buttons also scripts running very very slow). Its not a huge database, i would say its not even a complex one neither. On occasions it can take 4 to 5 sec onds for a script or file to open from a button. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'm using FM Server 5.5 loaded on a Mac with OS 9.0. My clients use both PCs and Macs. One of my Mac clients needs to print envelopes, but I can't get the envelope format to stick. I have set the envelope format at the Server and also at her computer. Each time she goes to the envelope layout, the format has been lost. Could the problem be in her printer driver - or elsewhere? I have a client willing to upgrade their current FM 5 server to FM 7. They have a 25 client license (FM 5.5) and all clients are running OS X. They are willing to upgrade the server, but are asking why they need to buy 25 more client licenses when they could run a compiled FMP7 app on their server. My question is - What the pros and cons of this approach?

This is probably really obvious but i can't figure it out. I keep getting this error when i start FM Server 5.5, "The copy of FileMaker Server has been modified by another program or virus. Please obtain a fresh copy from your locked master disk after determining the cause." I get it every time i start up. We used to have Server 3.0 and got the same error then as well. We upgraded about 2 months ago but that didn't help. If I ignore it and click 'Continue' nothing bad seems to happen. Can someone tell me what the error is, why do i keep getting it and is there a way to get rid of it because it's a bit disconcerting? By the way the server is running on an ol…

Hi All, We have the problem connecting from Citrix to Filemaker files on server from the beginning. And I have no clue to solve it. The problem is that some computers can connect citrix to server and some computers can not. Sometimes we have to change username to log in to server through citrix and it works. But sometimes it does not work? Is the problem from connection through Citrix or the problem of filemaker files on server? Someone has the same problem ? Can someone tell me how to solve it ? Do I look for Citrix issue or filemaker files issue ? Thanks Anh Tran

The FileMaker Server Best Practices document recommends turning off file sharing and other unused services. In various discussions/forums I've seen different interpretations of this statement. In a windows environment (specifically Win2K Server), how _specifically_ does one 'turn off' file sharing? Does this mean not sharing FileMaker data folders, not sharing any folders (what about admin shares e.g. FMServer01C$), stopping a service, changing a windows setting? Similarly, one source led me to believe that simply allowing file sharing (no virus software, no backup software, no direct user access to files being hosted) might 'confuse' the OS and fool it into think…

We are trying to run FM server 7 on a Windows 2003 Server in a 2000 AD domain. I tried to setup external authentication with no luck. When we try to login a database, with a user in a group defined on the domain, we do see a login attempt (successful) to the network, however filemaker comes back with a error message not allowing the user access to the database. Even if its full permissions. In contacting Filemaker tech support, they told me the domain group the user was apart of had to be A) a member of "login as a service" on the domain controller policy and : A Administrator of the machine filemaker server resides. Needless to say, I think Tech support is…

Hi, I'm new to this forum. Currently I have my complex solutions currently running on FMServer 5, and because this server does not support web publishing, I have some simple solutions running on FMPro 5.5 in Web Publishing mode, but it seems you are very limited in the number of layouts you can get FileMaker Pro to publish from a single file (two or three I believe). We just put FMS7 on a Win2000 Server machine. I have followed the directions, but cannot connect to the server to set it up. I have tried localhost via the admin console on the server itself and via remote (which stated that remote admin had not been setup on the server). I did notice that the IP address for the localhost was different from the IP of the machine itself. I cannot set the machine to the 127.0.0.1 as it is a "loopback" address. I do not seem to be able to edit the localhost in the favorites menu of console. It may be that we have a bum CD, the admin pdf file cannot be opened.

I have a unique situation here. We have G-4 hosting or FM database. It has FMS 5.5 running with OS9. We are then using Terminal Services (remote desktop connection) for our users to access the FM app over a WAN. We have a problem here. After we suffer some kind of "Hiccup" or crash of the G-4 (happened a few times now) our user profiles in the Terminal Services Server (WIN2K Server) somehow get corrupted and the CPU in the Term Server maxs out and we crash. We found we can Rename all the profiles (effecifally removing them) and once new profiles are built as users log on everything is great......untill the G-4 hiccups again. Has anyone seen this before? I have a problem.... If I try to sync a file to my pocket pc from a server file (set up to share via mobile companion) I don't have it available to sync when I open it remotely and check the application plug-in details. I have tried sync-ing a standard single local file and this works fine so I assume there is a problem with this? Does anyone have any knowledge of this or any suggestions? Ideally I want to have palms on a number of desktops but if its a case of having to open up a separately synchronised single use file then this could be a bit of a pain as IDEALLY i just want to sync straight from the shared databases. Any help on this would be SO great!!

I just installed FMS 7 Preview on a 500 MHZ G4 with 512MB of ram, running 10.3.3. Install asks if you want automatic startup or manual. I chose automatic. Install went smoothly. Asked me to restart. Say it ain't so. I must have majorly misunderstood what they meant by external server authentication. It looks like, and tell me if I'm wrong, that external server authentication is only for verifying access to the file and assigning the privilege set? The main thing I wanted, and thought we were getting, was for my users to be able to log in using their Windows domain username and password.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I can't seem to find the answer in previous posts. I am running FileMaker Server 5.5 on an old Mac (OS 8.6) and this morning it crashed. The message said that the FileMaker Server has unexpectedly quit, because of error type 2 and that i had to save my work in another application and restart the computer. Is it a low memory error or something because the computer it's running on really is quite old. any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks Veqtor

Hi, I've recently started a copy of Server 5.5 on what I thought was a Grunty 2 month old Dell Poweredge server running Win2k server. The server is also running file & print services for 14 users, and since launching FM 5.5 users have been finding file copying etc much slower than normal, and word freezes when they try to save opened docs back to the server. the copying isn't a big issue, but the MS Word saving/freezing is a disaster. I was under the impression that FM server plays nice with other win2k services (unlike Fm server and Appleshare IP) Appreciate any suggestions / advice. Cheers, Tobes.

I moved a bunch of FMP Server hosted files from our OS 9 server to OS X server. I have a file for example Alternative School Master2002.fp5 being hosted by the FMP Server. I can access via FMP using Open Remote and then navigate to the OS X fmp host (xserve1) and then open the file. Now I have users that will via the finder Navigate to the shared directory and double click on the same file! When the file was hosted by FMP 5 Server in OS 9 the double clicked file would open as a guest of the FMP Server. Now under OS X is warns me that I'm about ready to host a database on a remote volume. This gives me the impression that I am trying to open the database twice. In fact I …

Running FileMaker Server 5 on Windows NT. Here's a typical performance monitor screenshot. My problem is every once in a while (probably once or twice a day) I get the little double-arrow cursor with the squiggly line. FileMaker basically freezes up for a minute or two, then finally resumes where it left off. Most often this seems to happen when switching layouts, and I can see half the elements on the layout have been drawn (based on the front / back level). The rest of the layout just shows blank, until it kicks in again. This has happened to at least one other OS 9 machine, so I don't think it's just me...

Hi, I have FMServer installed in a G3 running OS 9.2, hosting 30 files. It is accessed by 25 Macs running OS 10.3.3. We are getting an Xserve Raid, so I guess these are my options: 1. Keep FMServer in the G3 running OS 9.2 2. Moving FMServer to a G4 running 10.3.3 3. Moving FMServer to the Xserve What option would you go for? Thanks a lot in advance!

A client has reported a strange problem. Some of their local machines have screen savers or go into sleep mode. When they wake up, the FileMaker screens they were on have changed and sometimes, there is no found set in whatever file is up front. Anyone heard of this, and if so, know a workaround? These are all Macs, by the way, some running OS X, some running OS 9 (FMP Server is on an XServe). Thanks, Gary

On a network running Windows 2003 server, one user is accessing via Terminal Services. All works fine, except that for one issue. An "Opener script" has been created that connects to a hosted database that uses FileMaker Server 5.5. This works on all the LAN stations, but does not work on the station connecting by terminal services. Any ideas anyone? FileMaker Version: 6 Platform: Windows XP

I've noticed some weird behaviour with global fields since using filemaker server. I set a global on a client machine, then when everyone has quit filemaker, with the server still running, the global returns to the value it was before. Is there a way to reset the value of this global to something different without taking the server off-line? Thanks

I'm trying to set up Directory Services in FM Server 7, but I'm baffled. The FM Server Admin manual says to check with your Network Administrator, but that's me! I have not set up LDAP or Open Directory before, and the Open Directory manual that comes with Panther Server is too verbose. Anyone know of some good resources for setting up an OS 10.3 server as an Open Directory Master with LDAP, and then what settings go in the Directory Services pane in FM Server to get it all to work?

Has anyone ever successfully ported filemaker through a firewall? I have spent many hours attempting to acomplish this for my database people to no avail. I have the specific settings from filemaker.com with the correct port # and filtering schemes for UDP and TCP filtering. I am now starting to think that my firewall is correct and that the server is not. Configuration is as follows: port 5003 for all filemaker traffic. Block port 5003 for UDP in both directions but allow TCP. Export services for port 5003 to the filemaker host. We are using NAT so a static IP is not possible. Thoughts anyone????

If I put a certain file in the autoupdate folder on filemaker server 5.5, say a word template (.dot) that I use with macros to perform a mail merge - can I use the filemaker auto update feature to download an updated version of that file on startup? By simply going External ("FMSAUC-UpdatePlugin", "letterplain42.dot") or something? Basically is the autoupdate plugin restricted to just plugins/.fmx files or could I use it for other support files that I use with our database? Flipping handy if I can auto download new versions of our templates to clients rather than having to add it to our network startup scripts. FileMaker Version: 5 Platform: Windows …

Hi, This is how this system looks like: FileMaker Server 5.5 v1 running on a G3 in OS 9.2. Accessed by 25 users running FM6 under OS X : They are changing the server to Panther, so I guess it's the right time to move FM Server to a G4 (OS X ver 10.3.3, 500Mhz processor, 512 MB SDRam). According to the FMServer 5.5 Administrator's Guide of FMS 5.5, it can run under OSX, but it wouldn't be able to open FM6 databases (only FMP 5.x) ... does that mean that we have no option but to upgrade to FM Server 6? Thanks a lot in advance! :

Strange installation on OS X... I had one user installed on a G4 / Panther. named fmserver. I had this machine prepped with FMS 5.5v4.. I installed Server 7 and it assimilated this user account my home directory was not accessible it puts the server's home directory in Library. and I am assuming it is creating an fmserver user. When I installed it on my powebook I had no problems. Just make sure you don't have a user fmserver on your machine prior to installation.

Hello everyone, I am a little confused about the client server aspect of fm7. Is it a client server database or a fileserver with some additional plugins. I am less interested in having people from the internet access my system, than the internal network. I understand that all internet connections will be client server... what about regular network connections? My confusion stems from statements about plug in that will perform on the server rather than the client... what about normal queries and sorts? Or do you have to buy additional specific, expensive plug ins to take advantage of the client server aspect. Thanks in advance for your help. Jason…

OK I have a question. I've started purchasing a few plugins for our company, to extend the functionality of our database. I use filemaker server 5.5 on a windows 2000 machine which serves the database all day long to about 15 guests in total. 11 windows users, 4 osx users. I've managed to get the autoupdate feature working kind of. How do I get the mac format plugins, onto the autoupdate folder on this windows 2000 machine without breaking the macintosh formatting of the plugin? I just unzipped the archive which came with my plugin - and try emailing the osx plugin file over to an osx machine, dropped it into the FileMaker Extensions folder as ins…

Hi, I am running FMPro Server 5.5 on a Windows 2000 machine. I want to be able to access the database remotely via the web. I set up the server and it is currently running under services. I had it working to the point where when I typed the servers ip and port 81, it came up, but without the database that was created. Now, after resetting it up, it doesn't come up at all. Any ideas? Or know of any tutorials that could help me out? All help is appreciated! Thank You, Ryan FileMaker Version: 5 Platform: Windows 2000

Can someone help? I'm developing a .NET application that needs to connect to filemaker server to make use of FM files hosted by the server but I'm getting connection errors. Does anyone know how integrated FM Server 7 will be with Windows' Active Directory? Before I started with Server 5.5 (currently using it) I read about the AD integration and thought I could define FM permissions by AD user/group - obviously I couldn't. I'm planning to upgrade to FM Server 7 when it arrives - right now my FM setup doesn't have user-level security and before I go and spend 30+ hours building it into my 9-file system, I want to know if my efforts are worthwhile. If FMS7 will be able to read usernames and logins from AD then I'm going to wait. Any info? Anyone get a pre-release version of FMS 7 yet? FileMaker Version: Server 7 Platform: Windo…

My setup is as follows: FMP Server v5.5 running on OS X v10.3.3 (G4 tower) FMP Client v6 running on OS X v10.3.3 (2 iBooks and 1 iMac) My problem: When trying to open a file with FMP Client v6 being served by FMP Server v5.5, I get unexpected quits. The crashlog file generated says that a "EXC_BAD_ADDRESS" AND "KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE" has occurred. If I open this same file directly with FMP Client v6, it opens properly. If anyone has any insight into this problem, it would be appreciated. FileMaker Version: 6 Platform: Mac OS X Panther

I am running Server 5.5 on Windows 2000 Server. If a user login to check backup schedule from FileMaker server console, he won't be able to see any schedule at all. (But he can create a backup schedule but it will disappear when he logs back in) But i can see all the backup schedule if i log in as administrator. Does anyone knows how to make a non-administrator privilege person to see/edit backup schedule from Task scheduler in FileMaker server console??? Thanks in advance. I've been serving a multiuser file in-house with 6 users for years now. No problems. As we upgrade to FMP 7, I'm wondering if I should invest in FMP 7.0 Server, but don't know the advantages. We're not publishing the files. I guess my question is - what is the difference in a mult-user file and a served file? tks Version: v6.x Platform: Mac OS X Jaguar

I have setup a Windows 2000 Server and installed FMServer 5. I have a Linksys Wireless-B access point hanging off the W2k server and two Windows Desktop PC's with Linksys Wireless-B USB Network Adapters. The desktops and the W2k server see each other. I can ping and share files/printers. I have FileMaker Pro 5.5 installed on the desktops. When I try to access the server files by clicking Host the files don't apprear. I have tried entering the IP address of the server but get the same results. Both the desktop computers have NIC's. The onboard NIC's are attached to a Netopia DSL modem for Internet access. I have the Internet connection and the wireless connection on differ…
