I have a script that is supposed to save a copy of a filemaker file that runs great from my local machine or a mounted network server but won't when hosted on FM Server 5. I checked and that option is grayed out on ANY file hosted by Server. Any ideas? [This message has been edited by signal (edited February 01, 2001).]

I am preparing a purchase request for a 533mhz G4 (single processor) Mac to run FM Server application and, initially, about 50 workgroup databases. We will be using Retrospect backup software to back up designated folders each night. However, some IT staff are suggesting additional config options. Is it recommended we... a) Include a 2nd internal drive? If so, ATA, SCSI...? : Use multiple FM schedules to copy data to both drive locations at frequent intervals throughout the day? c) If we go with a multiple drive configuration, should we configure the drives with RAID? If RAID, mirroring?

I've installed FileMaker Server 5 on a COMPAQ server running NT v4 (SP5). Things were running fine for a few weeks but now that all our Filemaker databases have been moved over to the new server (84 files), the FMSERVER.EXE tasks periodically consumes 99% of the CPU, forcing me to re-boot. The service cannot be stopped. Has anyone else run into this?

(Same question someone else just posted only slightly different. Hope I get a better answer.) I have a bunch of various solutions (approx. 40) on FM 3 server that we need to temporarily serve off another station. Mac environment with the odd PC. Already have another server running FM 5 Server on the same network. Can't convert old db's just yet as not everyone has FM 5 yet and won't for a while. (You know, budget crap.) So, aside from the expected less than optimum network speed issues, if I install FM 3 server on the FM 5 server: a) will FM 3 server overwrite files installed by FM 5 (If so, could I install FM 3 THEN reinstall FM 5 server?) : will the two server sof…

FM running in a workgroup setting with Filemaker server, all - FM Server, and clients - configured to use IPX/SPX protocol. New app in office requires IPX to be removed in favor of TCP/IP. Changed the FM clients to use TCP/IP (Edit, Preferences, Application). Changed FM Server to allow TCP/IP in control panel, then restarted the service. Now the clients can't open any FM files - error message about file set for single user, or host not available. FM on the server machine can't open them either - error message about a network error preventing file sharing. How can I get FM server to share files with TCP/IP?

I have a filemaker server up and running. It is currently hosting some 60 files. I tried adding in a new one but it would not show up on the client when I try to select the file within a script. I have set it to "multiuser(hidden). I could see all the rest of the files which was orginally there (I was not the one who puts up the 60 files) but I could not see my new file. When I try opening it locally on the machine,it says that this file has a network error 10048. Does someone know what is wrong and how do I fix that? Thanks.

Live Oak, et al, We have databases comprised of numerous connected parts for different projects and fax, transmittal, directory components for different projects. Unnecessary parts are hidden, however, the required parts create a long hodge-podge list. Is it possible with FM Server 5 to create separate folders for each project one level down from the current level? Will these be available and openable? Thanks to all for the help. L.

I have my FM Server 5 installed on an NT 4.0 server, and almost everyday I take a backup on my filemaker files. In order to do that I close all the filemaker files, and I stop the FileMaker service, and then take the backup. The problem is, everytime I stop the service, I have to give a different name to the server for the remote administration ; otherwise, at the client machine I cannot open the server for remote administration. I feel that there is something wrong, and I'm starting to run out of names for the server...does anyone have an idea about what could be wrong. Thank You

We have the server edition set up on our server(macintosh) and we have both PC and Mac users logging in using the password system. One machine in particular is having problems with occasionally being locked out of screens or fields to which it has access. Sometimes it works ok, and sometimes it acts like I'm using the wrong password. Has anyone had similar experiences? What could be different about this one machine (Mac)? Does too many open programs cause similar problems or poor network communication? The database itself has 8 or 9 tables with many relations set. I would appreciate any insight you can give me.

Has anyone seen a product that allows changing passwords, editing fields, etc. for databases on an FMP server installation without going through a network share and setting the database to single user? We have a 2GB database hosted outside a corporate firewall, and the current process for doing admin work is to close the database and ftp it to the DBA's machine, Open it in single user, modify, then FTP back. Since FMP server evidently hosts single user files by setting them to Multi-user, we can't modify them in place from the host. Since the files are outside our firewall we can't use a network share to open them in single user. Would appreciate any pointers.

I have installed the trial version of Filemaker on an NT4 machine and made all the settings. It is running as a service. Probably because of my inexperience with Filemaker, it just sits there. How do I set it up to serve the database files over the internet from a web browser? Do I need additional plug-ins? Do I need to make settings in IIS? All help will be greatly appreciated. Carl

We have server 5 on a Windows NT machine. The hard drive is partitioned into a 2 gig partition and a 20 gig partition. (we were told that NT needed a small partition to be installed on). FM5 server installed itself onto the small partition. Now the files need to be in the same folder as server 5(on the small partition) we would prefer to have them on the large partition as they already take up most of the small one. When we moved the folder to the large partition, the service wouldn't start any more. Is there a way around this?

My question is when is networked will they be able to see the local host files each other? Or does users have to specify the IP address of server in other location.

I just instanlled a FMP solution on the client's server that runs on NT. The solution exports some FMP files. During the process the solution imports back the data from the same exported files. Now, I run this solution on a MAC FMP server and everything works fine. The only difference is that the exported files are automatically created on the guest's computer, in the FMP folder. Now here is the problem. When I run the same soution on my client's NT server, I get and error message where it says something like "Write protection error. Use another disk..." And on this error message the name of the file that can't be written is mixed with some stange caracters. How can I…

Hey everybody, I've got a relational database of about 12 files installed on a network and everybody there loves it. Only problem is, now they want to use it over a T1 connection with partial bandwidth to remote offices and it...takes...for...ever...for...it...to...work. Is FileMaker not designed for this kind of networking? Does this happen because of the multiple files? Is there an obvious way to fix this? Thanks a bunch, Dave

We have been running FM Server 3 for the last couple of years on NT using TCP/IP. We have 79 databases, approximately 3.4Gb and typically 40 - 50 clients at a time. Over the years the system has slowed down but does work and is reliable. What, if any performance benefits should we expect if we upgrade to FileMaker Server 5?

I am developing a solution on FMP Server 5 on an almost dedicated G4 (after the FMP Server is shut down we use Retrospect to backup many volumes to external Firewire HDs)running OS 9.0.4. My problem is frequent freezes when there is no activity at all. I using a client iMac. Several times a day with or without me using the files being served, the G4 freezes. I suspect its a Finder problem. Several days ago I did a clean reinstall of everything. Is anyone else experiencing problems of this nature?

When I run the FileMaker Server Console Configuration screen, I see 5 'assistant' icons on the right hand window pane of MMC1.1. Nothing happens when I click on those icons, other than Server Monitoring, which simply displays an HTML page. Is this normal? As I have the feeling that those icons should do their respective functions. Extra info: installed FMServer 5 on a dedicated newly installed NT4.0 workstation. Applied service pack 6.a. installed IE4.01 then IE5.5.

Hi, I have installed FileMaker Pro Server 5 on a Windows 2000 Server. The problem is that the FileMaker service will not start. It returns a service specific error code 22. Apparently this indicates either that the chosen protocol is not installed or not correctly configured. This happens when TCP/IP is the chosen protocol. The service will start though if IPX is chosen instead. I have 2 network cards in this server that both have individual static ip addresses. Now I know that TCP/IP is correctly configured as I have users that connect to the Extensis Portfolio server on this box via IP. Does anybody have any ideas ? Many thanks.

I have seen this question asked before in one of the many FMP Forums I visit regularly (maybe even this one) but do not remember if it was answered. Here goes. Each time a master file calls for a related file hosted on FMP Server, an annoying message appears on the user's screen. If that related file is a large one, the message sits there until the file fully opens. This can take even longer if a script runs on opening. If the master file calls several related files............ Does anyone know of a way to suppress these messages or at the very least replace the messages of several opening files with a single message of the developer

We actually have about 110 databases, but this number is growing. We know that maximum per server is 150 databases. Of the following options which is the best selection for our new server, taking into account that the old server will still run with…

I have a client installation that I am about to move to FileMaker Server. They don't have the luxury of a dedicated network server - let alone a dedicated FileMaker database server - but a makeshift server running Windows 2000 Pro has been doing very well for them (they only have 3 computers on the network). I tested the eval version of the server on the W2000Pro machine this weekend, and performance was fantastic. However, I tried to run a copy of the FileMaker Pro 5 software on the W200Pro system running the server software, and it was unbearably slow. I know it isn't something that you should normally do, but is there a reason that it was so slow on the same machin…

OK, I can't avoid it. I have a client who wants a web site built with FileMaker Pro and Lasso. They are putchasing FMP Server 5, FMP Unlimited 5 and Lasso 3.5. No problem, I can do this, says I. EXCEPT, I'm an avowed Macintosh guru, not a Windows guru. I tend to have an alergic reaction to Windows, and have stayed away from it whenever possible. I have developed solutions for Windows, but it's always been the client side that I had to worry about, so Windows 9x, FMP for Windows, and Virtual PC on my Mac has always been enough. What do I need to know to set this up. What dangers do I need to look out for. I'm flying up to Sacramento in about a month to set this up…

I currently have a multi-platform solution with about 25 db files that are tied into fmserver. Is it possible on both the mac and pc platforms to send a user directly into the server without choosing host and then the FP5 file? If you want to change properties on a live server (such as increasing the number of clients) do you have to close the Filemaker Server under the Services window in Windows (NT)? This is FM Support's advice. So why am I asking, you might wonder? The server hosts a very busy database. I'm loathe to take it down to perform an upgrade that doesn't work (as I did recently - following similar advice). I'd be obliged if anyone could confirm this from experience.

Dear All, I don't really know if this problem is related directly to FM Server 5 or FMP5. My problem is, after I have installed Microsoft Data Access Components(MDAC) 2.5 on my Windows NT Server, I can no longer administer/open the FM server from a remote machine. I can see the Serve's name, but it is dimmed and cannot be opened. That only happened after installing the MDAC. I don't know if installing it has chaged anything. I checked the network configuration, and everything is still the same. I tried reinstalling the FM Server, and the FMP5 on my machine, but nothing has changed. Hi all- This is probably a really simple question, but I'm doing everything without documentation so here goes.... On an NT system running FMP Server - to share/add data to a FMP database for an internet site, does the FMP application and database file need to remain open? If so, is there another way of doing it without staying logged onto the system. The server it's running on is in a area that alot of people pass through, and I don't like the idea of not being able to log out just to keep an application running for an indefinite period. Thanks in advance for any help....

We have a client who is running FM server 5 on Mac OS 9.0. At the beginning of the day (after teh server starts up), the database is access and displays the results quite quickly. As the day progresses, the access and display takes longer and longer to complete. On one firm, it goes from an instantaneous refresh to nearly 3 minutes. FM Server 5 is the only application running. The server has 256 Mb ram, and was originally OS 9.0.4. We have since backed teh system to 9.0. We've even tried upping the cache and increasing the amount of ram allocated to FM Server 5. Still no change in the symptom. All we've been able to do to allieviate this is to shut down FM Server…

I created a database for my school for as a Community Service Logbook. As the details of the database aren't relevant (I don't think anyway), I'll just tell my problem. I am not the administrator for the school's FMP Server, so I am not knowledgeable about how it works, however the admin told me what the problem was but he wasn't sure what was causing it, so I said I'd post it on this forum and see if anyone might have some ideas of what could be causing it. When he tries to open the file through the server it says "error occurred;unable to open file" He is able to open it off the desktop as a regular file, but not through the server. Any ideas of what might be causing…

I have Filemaker 4.1 and we are looking to upgrade our system to multi user. I have downloaded the trial version of FM Server 5 and FM Pro 5 to my network installed Server on to the NT Server but I cannot seem to find anywhere to open any of the files I want to make available across the network. After installing FM Server there is no way to open any files ...? The marketing material suggests that it is easy to set up but I have managed to find a way to make it complicated I think. Any idea what I might have forgotten to do ?

I'm new at this web hosting thing. A couple of quick questions. What is the best solution for hosting web pages from FMP. What should you use as the back end (ie FMP server etc.) and how should you go about writing the rest of the HTML stuff if you want to have active searching and addition to your database (much like this message board). I would like the interface to be as close as possible to my FMP one that I have designed using lots of scripts etc. Any suggestions? Kevin

I am developing a Filemaker System for a client that has an NT Server which is also the running Filemaker Server 5. All is well except for remote access via an IP #. The person that handles the NT Software has set NT up so that the staff at the clients location uses the null IP numbers 192.168.0.x for the internal access to the NT Server and Filemaker. They do have a DSL line which has a regular IP number. The NT person is trying to provide Internet Security since he has file sharing turned on. He wants to configure the DSL router so that Filemaker is the only item that remote users can see. It has not been successful. Does anyone use a configuration similar to this that …

Hello, In the FileMaker Server Administrator's guide for FileMaker Server 5.0, it says that if you create a shortcut to the database and put the shortcut in the filemaker server directory, you should be able to have these files hosted by the server. However, when I try it, it does not work. Any suggestions? I have tried removing all spaces from the shortcut name. Thanks, Constance

Running FMP Server on NT. In folder are 16 files with one Main file. One of the sixteen must have the ability to delete records. In the Main file these records appear in a portal. With FMP 5 (single user, no server), my solution works, I can delete the records. This one file has the same password as all the others, but that password allows this one file deletion privleges. When running on the server and trying to delete a record in the portal, I get an error message saying that my PW will not allow deletion. I am on a TCP/IP network. Under "Sharing" in "File" menu I am told that the file is running as a guest of NT. What is going on and how can I allow deletion of recor…

My company has used File Maker for years on MAC computers, but they have decided to switch to PC's. When we transferred the database from the MAC's to the PC the layout on the screen was fine, but when we print a sheet the layout becomes misaligned. We have sheets of data that display operation numbers in one column and they must line up with the operation data in another column. Well on the screen the numbers line up with the data, but when we print the sheet the numbers no longer align with the data. It worked perfectly on the MAC version, but when used on a PC we have that problem. What could cause this problem? Please help.

In the Server Administrator's Guide, in the Appendix of Technical Specs and optimization (page A-2) it says: "Turn off file sharing Make sure operating system file sharing is turned off on the server computer." Is this a requirement of Server 5 or a suggestion for optimization? The machine we want to run the as the server is an NT box, serving e-mail and 10 users for basic file sharing and saving. Will we see great degradation of Server 5 if it's not on its own dedicated (non-file-sharing) box? Thanks, Chris ------------------ - - Chris Altwegg | [email protected] Pinpoint Direct Mktg. Sorry if this is deemed rude, but that is pure bull crap. Who ever told you this is probably trying to sell you or your company and a bunch of other NT solutions too. ? We run a mixed network here, and have our FMS running on a Mac. None of the PCs have any trouble accessing it. If you are running FMS 5.0 on a Mac, you can select in preferences - networking to run either TCP/IP only or TCP/IP and AppleTalk depending on your needs. Now restart your FMS app, and any PC not your network host be able to see the Mac FMS server as a Host. One caveat, this assumes that you are running some sort of IP addressing on your network. Hope this clears thing up for you.

any opinions about how to set up for optimal performance under nt? i'm about to buy a machine for our new production system, with about 50-60 users, up to 30 concurrent. none of us in IT are very familiar with optimizing fm under nt, and i'm wondering specifically if fm is multi-threaded, and if multi-processing makes any difference to it, or if a single, faster processor will perform best. otherwise, all the usual junk is covered, i.e., raid5, as much RAM as we can justify, etc. suggestions? glenn

I have been sharring an 8 file database acros a statewide WAN with my staff for about a year now. I keep all of the files on one of my Novell servers. I would like to install FMP Server on this server. In most cases a NOS doesn't matter, but I thought I should ask if there are any hidden issues with Netware. I am currently running Netware 4.1 on our WAN and will be upgrading to 5.1 this year.

I am having some trouble with Filemaker Server crashing during or around scheduled backup times. Someone thought this might have to do with the Database Cache and Flush settings. Currently the Database Cache is set to 40MB and the cache is set to flush every 15 minutes. We are running Filemaker Server on a G4 with Mac OS 9. It is hosting 41 files with 20-30 guests at an average. One file is huge:623 MB. Five are large: 80-130 MB. The rest are under 12 MB. Anyone have any thoughts on this? We are thinking of switching over to NT.

Our File Maker Server 5 had been running just fine. Last week I installed the upgrade. Three times since then File Maker Server has crashed. A common symptom has been the appearance of guests which have IP addresses from our users but no user names. Sometimes there are several with the same IP address. Why?? Where are these unnamed guests coming from? Please help somebody.

I have 750 Megs of Ram on a 500 Mhz G3 Server that is reserved for FM Server 5. I run this on a Novel Network managed by another guy. We have on average about 8 people connected to data files at any time. Most are just viewing. Only 4 have modifcation rights. Solution is 20 files. I wonder if I configure the machine to load FM Server and the files into a RAM disc if it will run any faster? Some things take bloody for ever, like subsummary reports etc. I realize I will have a problem maintaining valid data in case of a crash, but that can be solved. Any ideas? Thanks ------------------

We have just set up a Cisco PIX firewall, and can't seem to get the FileMaker server available thru the firewall. We even tried opening up all ports across all protocols to our DMZ NAT IP addresses--to no avail! We are using NAT so a static IP is not possible. Anyone have any info to fix this? if the fix is to detailed to post here, please email me at [email protected] Thanks

When upgrading from FMP Server 3.0 to later versions of 3.0 we got "Windows NT access violation Errors". This problem is mentioned in Filemaker article 104759. Basically, FMP Server was having conflicts with HP LaserJet 5 and 6 drivers. Filemakers solution was to delete these drivers. Does anyone know if FMP Server 5.0 addresses this problem? ------------------

hi, this is from the FM technical support: "Storing external graphics. When using the Import Picture command, you can use the checkbox to "store only a reference to the file. When this option is used, only a thumbnail image is stored in the container field, along with a reference to where to locate the image on disk." I have a big problem with referenced files - they cannot be found after having copied the database and the images to another computer - is this how FM wants it to be? does "disk" mean the local disk the database was running when the graphics were imorted with the option "store only a reference to the file"? thanks for helping :confused

We have a number of individual users working with filemaker on the Mac. The plan now is to integrate our information resources personnel and have Filemaker hosted on an NT Server. We anticipate about 40 users. Of the 40, about 10 will create small aps and 4 will actively build fields on the server. Do all users require a version of FM?

We are currently running 20 Apple FM Pro 3.0 licences in a multiuser and relational database environment for the recording of scientific data. We are at the point of upgrading to 25 FM Pro 5.0 licences (Mac and a few NT clients) as well as FM Server 5.0. We also intend purchasing an Apple G4 500MHz server to enhance our collection of over 30 Macs. My question is how does FM5 Server integrate with the Apple G4 server. Could the FM5 Server software run on the G4 server running Appleshare IP? If not, how could the Apple G4 server enhance our FM environment?

We're running our production databases on one machine using FM Server 5 and we use automatic backup to back up those files each night. Using Visual Basic, we copy the backup files to our web server (separate machine) and want to open them in FM Pro Unlimited 5 to allow access to more than 10 web users. In order to do this we would have to close the day old files on the web server, then copy the new backup files and open those in the Unlimited application. Does anybody know of an easy way to do this or know of something that has already been created? Thanks!

I have a database with approx 2000 students and need to serve this using FM Server 5. Using the Importing Pictures example in the AppleScript examples which load with FMPro5 I can do a batch import of all their ID photos to a container field. When I share this using FM Server5 client users get the message that it cannot draw the Pict. If I paste PICT files into this database one at a time then they show up fine. Please help ?

Hello, Nice to meet you in this new forum dedicated to our preferred MDBS. Actually, I've got a problem with FMP Server which, as anybody knows, forgets global fields when a users close a file. In my case, I've declared a counter as a GF, but I absolutely need to remember the information for the others users, specially those still connected. Does anyone find a process to keep the data in ? According to my poor english, do not hesitate to contact me if my question is not clear ! Pat
