Am I really the only person to be losing sleep and patience over this ungreat new feature in V8? When setting tab order on a layout, I used to always leave out a few numbers in case of errors or subsequent additions. Now, with V8, I leave out the numbers and FMP just re-numbers them from 1. It is driving me crazy. Anyone know how I can FIX my numbers?

How can I show the window name in the header of the page? I tried to set up a global calc field using Get(windowname) as the calc, but it shows whatever the first windowname is but not the current window. What I am trying to accomplish is have the Window Name>layout name in the header so I don't need to look at the top bar. I find that when I'm navigating all over I wind up with multiple pages open which tends to get very messy. Any suggestions? TIA, Al

am making a Contact Directory and want the first(Last-Name) on each page and the last(Last_Name) on the top of each page. I can get the first(last-Name) by putting that field in the header, but can not come up with a field definition for putting the Last(last_name) there also. If anyone knows how to do this, pls let me know what the formula would be.

I have a 350-seat performance space. For each performance we ask our patrons to give their Zip/Postal Codes at the door when they enter. I need to keep a record of each performance and number of each Zip Code recorded. Most fall in the range of the 40-or so Zip Codes in our metropolitan area, but some happen to come, at random, from Zips we have never recorded before, perhaps from outside the state. I need some advice on the fastest and/or most efficient way to enter all 350 Zip Codes in an individual record for each performance, and have them, if at all possible, self-tabulate as to the number of patrons from each Zip Code. If the user is filling out a form, and clicks "YES" as a radio button for field 'completed', is there a way to automatically do a calculation and put it into field 'total' ? I would like it to do a different calculation depending on which radio option was selected. This without the user knowingly running a script.

Hello - I have a repeating field of 10 values defined in a file, but on the data entry layout, I have only room enough to display maybe 2 of the values from the field. I thought that the user could just enter values and hit tab or Enter to keep adding repetitions, but it looks like you can only enter two values if only 2 reps are displayed. The field doesn't expand for entry, at least, not as far as I can see. Am I missing something that turns this on, or is it not possible? I'm thinking of something similar to what happens when you type beyond the bounds of a text entry field... it expands so that you can keep entering data. Thanks, Jeff

I am creating an inventory list. There is a list of objects, their storage location and a notes section - all in a single horizontal line. I added a container field beneath the notes section so that I can insert a photo of certain items. Is there a way to make a container field recognize when it's empty so that it will slide up? This is my first time working with container fields, is there something special I have to do, or do they just not slide in general?

I have some information I need to compute off 2 other fields in the table. It will only be used on the layout, and never referenced. Do I have to create a calculation field in the database, or is there a way to just create a field or portal on the layout that shows me a calculated result?

I am constantly trying to find a webding or wingding to use (and sometimes other fonts). I have been using them for graphics (they are very resource-efficient). I want the results of each key-combination viewable on one layout (or each font on a separate layout) telling me the key-combination of each. Once I select a font picture, I want to be able to apply colors to it. I already have a ColorCode demo (of Comment's) in place. I would like to also be able to change the size but I'm not greedy (smile). Once I determined the font, color and maybe size, I want to click a button and capture this formatting. I know this is a bit of a vague question, but is it possible to have filemaker generate layouts based on scripts? The reason I ask is because I want to create a table called "preferences", and have the ability to turn certain elements on or off. On a related note, is it possible to have a layout reference/include another layout? The best way I can think to explain this, is that, with mediawiki for example, you can create "template" pages which can then be included as part of other pages. This would also be handy for having a boilerplate header/footer.

Is there a way to allow the user to copy a text box with merge fields so they can easily paste it in another application? Now, I know that I can create a calculation field and arrange these fields however I like and that would solve my problem. However, there's thousands of ways that you could want to format names, dates, phone numbers, addresses and creating fields for each way seems like it would quickly get confusing. I am trying to create a layout in FMP8 which is higher that the maximum that seems to be allowed: something around 111 inches high, according to the rulers on the screen. I need this layout to have another page or two, taking it to around 130 inches or so. Is there a way I can break through this apparent maximum layout height? Thanks for any help.

I have a database for my work where i store data for appointments. I have a option where people are either "Renting", "Paying Mortgage" or "Own Home". Also a bit down the page there are other options if they are renting, for example if they are renting i need to find out household debt and deposit. What i was wondering was if there was a way of making so that; If radio box "Living status" = "Renting" then the other radio boxes (Household debt and deposit) are enable, else they are disable and grayed out so they cant be clicked. Is this possible ?

This may be a simple answer (it seems like it should be), but I am having trouble creating a button that will return me to the last layout I visited. I have a couple of pages on my database that are accessible through many routes, and I want to be able to make a button that will take the user back to the layout that got them there. How would one go about alterring the appearance of the default vertical scroll bars included in Filemaker Pro 7. In my opinion the defaults look a little grainy and are unnecessarily different from the scroll bars used in almost all standard applications that basic users are now familiar with. The scroll bar I am referring to is the one that appears for individual text fields in a layout that are too large to be displayed within their given space, not the scrollbar for scrolling down a layout that does not appear on the screen all at once.

I'm in the midst of upgrading/converting a FileMaker database that has lived through ver 2.1 all the way to 4.1... and now I'm taking it to ver 8. It has a lot of layouts and it's certain there are a number of them that are no longer used. Is there any method or tool I could use that would help me find what layouts are not referred to by any buttons, scripts, or triggers? Thanks

Hi, I just discovered that I can display field data by simply using the text tool and typing: <> onto the layout and it will display the data for that record, it even works in IWP. I have a call center database. There are 2 tables: CALLS & PRODUCTS. Each call that comes into the center gets a new call record. Each CALL record is related to a PRODUCT record. Each PRODUCT can be related to many CALLS but each CALL can only be related to one PRODUCT. I have been asked to produce a report that shows the top [variable] PRODUCTS that have had the most calls occuring from [variable] thru [variable]. (the user will enter the variables when prompted) For example; the user would want to see the 5 products that had the greatest number of calls between January 1st and March 31st this year. I've tried changing everything I can think of (and have searched Forums and read FM Help) and my little date calendar won't show in Browse like it does in all the pictures I've seen, even when adding it to new date fields (see attached). It shows in Layout Mode but disappears in Browse. Am I the only one with this problem or am I missing something? I assume it's something very simple. Or can someone give me an FM file where it works so I can see if it displays on my system or try pasting that field into my FM to find out how it is formatted? I might just be due for another break. I had two database and i tried to use the relationship on them. I got confused on the relationship so I deleted the relation and the tables on the relationship (define window). Hi there, Hopefully this will be an easy one for you 'Gurus'. I have a two tables that have a related ID no. Table1 has a portal to enter data into Table2. The problem is that a new record will only be created in Table2 if I enter something into the portal. What I want is whenever a record is created in Table1, a record is also created in Table2 (with the same ID). Hope this makes some kind of sense! Regards Martin

Has anyone used the Movie Library template in FM Pro 7? I was wondering if the "notes" section of it is expandable somehow. I'd like to make it larger so I can see all of the text inside that section without scrolling.

I'm new to filemaker and am curious if it is a good idea to use an image for the layout of the application. Instead of using filemakers built in tools to draw the boundaries of the app I laid out an image that I can change and insert into a duplicated layout when I need a new layout. Think tabs. There is a certain look I'm going for that I can't get with the built in layout tools. Any gotchas, tips or unforseen consequences? thanks in advance

I have a field that is defined as a checkbox set for a particular value list. You can check the first two boxes but that is it. The list has 6 items in it. I have checked the privilege sets, and they seem fine, but the strange thing is that you can check all boxes when logged in as an administrator. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

Hi, First, sorry for my english... I hope I can make my self clear. I'm developping a FM layout for a lowyer firm and they are using Time Slice for time spent in jobs. But the data have to be exported to FM, because its where they have the relative data, so that they can input time spent v client costs. I have tried to find a way to make the clock work in FM but no success... It's suposed to have a button to start, another to pause and another to stop. I am putting the finishing touches to my first Filemaker Pro database which is documenting various artefacts I have been researching for my PhD. The database is relatively simple with one main table and two related tables. The link between the three tables is the Record_ID which is just an auto-entry running number series. Record_ID is the foreign key in the two related tables. I am a novice at designing layouts and recently started my own company and am trying to develop a FMP layout close to what I am used to seeing at my previous job. We had a "company info," "work site info" with a button that would create a record in a seperate window from the "work site info" page. Making a small database to webpublish so people in the building can get product ETAs. I've given my buyer full access to edit records, and the sales people have generally restricted access as they only need to view the records. I did make a comment field, that I want to grant the sales guys guest access to be able to edit. To do this, I have to use a Boolean calculation to give access to only this one record. I don't actually need to calculate anything. I simply want to give this privilage set [guest], access to this one specific record [comments]. Sorry for such a stupid question, but... I can't get my default text color, style, size, etc to stay at want I want. I want the text to be a certain font, 12, Plain, Black, etc every time I drag a field from the tool bar or click the text button. I haven't been able to locate the answer to this in the Forums. I have done what I found in the FM Help, and it works for that session, but it switches back to Red, Bold, etc when I quit and come back to the app. I know the answer is simple, but I can't seem to locate it!

Well, I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of the border that appears around the field when I put a check into the checkbox (from the Browse Mode). Any thoughts? In Filemaker 7, OS 10.4.5, on an Imac, the Geneva 10pt font displays poorly, scrunched up, spaced out, etc. impossible to type correctly, but on other Imacs, powerbook, it displays just fine? Looks good in MS Word, etc. What's up?

Hello all I have created radio buttons to toggle between "active" and "inactive" clients. I am trying to find a way to change the background color of the entry depending on which is selected. So "active" clients will have a white background and "inactive" clients will have a gray background. I have no experience with scripting or any advanced FM techniques, so I am at a complete loss in trying to figure out how to achieve this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Among my layouts are letters (text boxes?) built using the "insert merge field" function to bring data from those fields into the letters. These include dollar amounts, name and address info, dates, etc. I have always been unable to format these merge fields when they are numbers or dates. For instance when the merge field has been a dollar amount drawn from the database, I have not been able to format the number as a dollar amount. I have had to place a typed "$" before the place where the merged field inserts the dollar amount into the lettter text and cannot even get Filemaker to place a comma into the number. Is there any way to add multiple colours to a value list. I am trying to create a list shoing project status (Active, Pending, Inactive, Prospect) and would like to have the colours Green, Yellow, Red and Purple respectively. To date I have overlaid coloured text over the list but depending on the operating system I have seen it shift plus it would be cleaner if I could do it without the overlay. I appreciate any help you can provide and am very appreciative that a forum like this exists as I've been using FM from back in the Claris days of version 1 and am now migrating (from scratch) to 8 ... ugghhh

Hi - I'm brand new to FM Forums and hope that this question isn't too ridiculous. I've built a system to track timesheets. I've designed a weekly report which provides each employee's hours (one page per employee). I wanted to take advantage of the Alternate Background Fill in the BODY part set-up but it's not working. The manual said that even numbered records use the fill background but it doesn't seem to use the actual RECORD NUMBER field. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Debra

I am designing a template to use on all layouts in a template I am creating in fmp 5.5. This template will be used by many different users/different machines/os. I am creating, buttons, graphics in Photoshop. Are there any standards I should consider regarding use of jpegs, color type constraints (web colours). Should I assume a display resolution of 800x600? I have read about Win/OSX issues related to font size (recommended 11 Arial/Verdana) Is there a function I put into a script that checks display resolution to display a message. Any help is much appreciated as always.

I understand that FileMaker 8 only shows five records at a time in list view on the web. If the status area is showing, you can click the "book" and it jumps the list forward to the next five records. How do I build a button that does the same thing? I want to hide the status area, but any button I make only moves to the next record, not to the next page. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, all - I'm putting together a layout for a report. The reported information includes some fields in other records, which I'm displaying through a portal. In any given report, there may be only a few related records, or a couple hundred. I'm trying to figure out the best way to represent this in the layout. Should I just make a "worst-case" guess for the largest number of records any report might have, and then put the slider on it? It seems like sort of a sloppy way to do it, but I can't think of another. Thanks...

I recently made the switch from FileMaker 6 to FileMaker 8. In my 6 database, I was able to display a found set as a table in a web browser and then when you clicked on one of the records, it would change to Form View. Now, in version 8, it no longer wants to do that. Is it still possible? How is it done? Displaying in List View is not much help, as version 8 only displays five records at a time. Anyone know a way around that? Thanks!

I have a table full of event data that I can easily show on a layout using a found set by the date of the events. I would like to create a layout that has the found set of a requested date listed and then right next to it show the following dates events listed. Using portals and a self-related table, I can't get this to work. And I haven't had any luck finding a previous post related to this topic. I'm trying to set up reports for items that are in production, shipped or in graphics on a 7 day, 30 day and 60 day sheet. I'm also having issues seperating the products, like small bags that are shipped on a 7, 30, 60 day report. Same with Large bags, totes, purses ect. Any and all help would be appericated.

I just found the forums and will preface this by saying I _just barely_ can manage to work with FMP7.0 vs2 at work. 8-) We've just upgraded, and I need to be able to have the cell borders appear when I preview & print. Since it doesn't appear in the soft preview, I figured this was a layout problem rather than a printing one. I've tried going into layout view (normally I use form), and tinkering with the field borders, but they still don't appear in Preview or Print. I have a database (see attached file) containing a list of customers. I have their adresses stored in a seperate table so I can keep track of their previous adresses. Well, I have a way of finding weird things. I've repeated tests and it does this on all my test files as well. Please notice the little black phone in photo 1. That is layout mode and the phone should be under the status area (no kidding). When I switch to Browse, photo 2 is the result. And the bugger moves around (photo3)! How I broke it: In layout mode, scroll slightly to right then enter Browse. It only does it on this one little graphic so it's not a bug. As usual, it's just me. I have an FM Pro6 database that has a long field stretched over several pages to accommodate six or so pages of text. It prints a header at the top of each page. The problem is it prints the field text directly on top of the header. It looks like a double exposure or a piece of paper that had something printed on it and was run through the printer again and something different printed on top of it. It didn't do this before and does not do it on all printers. I can also duplicate it by using Adobe distiller to print to a pdf. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

I have entered all my data in lower case and now would like to chane to upper case in all layouts. I can do this manually but when I export the data even though in all alyouts it is now uppercase it still exports as lower case.

I am refactoring a large multifile database into a group of very simple building block elements. I almost have all the layout overhead removed and need just one more piece to make it really work. Instead of fixed layout elements I use a color theme library. On the layout I wish to use tranparent modifiers to make the interface move in 3D as a context indicator to the user about what needs to be noticed in particular data states ( an interface much like those used in mission simulations ). I've written a database in FM8/Mac, and am testing it on Windows. Fonts look terrible. I've used Tahoma (one of the MS core fonts for web) throughout, and hadn't anticipated any difficulty. But the fonts are much too large when I open the database in Windows, and it makes my layout look very poor. In a search, I found out that other people had encountered this. But I didn't find any solutions. What are people doing to work around the problem? Should I make all the fonts smaller on the Mac (ie. basically compromise the Mac layout) so it displays correctly on Windows?

Real fundamental question here; if I want to make graphic changes to a layout, I do a save as, which adds the "copy" to the layout name, then work on the copy. Once I have made the changes to my liking, do i then change the name back to the orginal and have it replace it? Or am I better off working on the original and if i screw up, use the copy. Make sense?

Hi- We have a custom phone log- very basic- and all I need to do is create a button that inserts a new record that acts as a date separator so you can see phone calls from different dates easily. I tried a button using import and also new record but can't seem to get it to work- can I do it all from 1 file or will I need a second file to act as the inserted record? Hi, I have very nice FM 6 pro datatbase with invoicing feature that works just fine. There is one thing that I would like to improve, it's in the report form of the invoice. When I add an item,that has a serial number (Spare Parts) it occupies one line naturally. Further down on the same invoice, it happens that this item reappears because of an other sale and it occupies a new line. Now , what I would like is to have a way of getting the repetitive items to add and so they show up on one line and the quantity shows the added quantity of the item. I have a layout that has a save button (I have auto save diabled) I'm trying to dummy proof this DB as much as I can. My "Save button" runs a small script when saving for validation purposes. BUT...When a user clicks outside of a field or button, a window pops up asking whether to save the record or not. If you click save it bypasses my script and all validation. I'd like to put two buttons at the bottom of a data-entry layout to: >>> Set Pen Color Black <<< . . . . . >>> Set Pen Color Red <<< After clicking on one of them, all text that the user types from that point is stored/displayed in that color, regardless of the particular field being typed into. Basically, it's altering the FMP runtime's default text color. Is there a straightforward way to do this?

Folks, I am using Brian Dunnings Barcode Basics Code 128 barcoding sytem for FMP 8. I have Dymo labels that are 1 inch wide for my barcode and I've already done may label layout so that it prints correctly. I can't seem to resize a barcode to fit in the label space. Resizing the font or changing the style doesn't change the bar spacing. If I change the bounding box size the barcode gets cut off. Perhaps this isn't something that shouldn't be done with barcodes. Will it still be scannable? I Essentially typed in LIB20000 to convert to a barcode to get the resulting size of the barcode. I need advice.

Is there a a way out of this? I had just created the last button (in footer of a list layout), when I went to move it, I discovered clicking on it showed 'item active' on another object and, from then on, nothing else would activate and the activated item would not deactivate. The same object activates whatever I click on. When I deleted the activated object and re-clicked on any item, another object became the only one that would activate. I have tried quit/restart, save as reducing size, export/clone/import, recover db and duplicate layout. Hi. I am not sure that this is beeing posted on the right place in this forum but I hop someone can give me a hint or solution. I woder if it's possible to copy parts of a template to a blank file. Like a button or a calender etc with the scripts and value lists incleded and intact. I have tried to use a template with a very nice calendar that I wanted to include in another solution and it say's in the info to the template that it should be possible but I haven't figure out how. I have made a great looking database -- I think so anyway. My list view has 3 parts the Header, Body, and Footer. Is there a way to remove or hide the line that separates the parts. Hi, I'm sure this is a simple thing to do, but I can't find out how. : I'm using a script which includes New Window. What I want to do ... is ... if the window already exists (out of view ... behind other windows) then bring it to the front, if not, then go ahead and create a New Window. How can I implement a default button (one that is automatically selected by hitting the Enter button) in a custom window? Well where do I put this question!? I've recently moved from 7 to 8.0v2. I use underlines at the beginning of (some) field names. But the underlines won't display. I've noticed the same thing in script field-selection popups. In some of my views, several underlined fields in a row won't display the underline. But it's always missing on the first field. I don't recall (and can't find after searching) any discussion on this. Is this a bug or a feature? Windows and/or Mac? Screen res? 8.0v2 and not 8.0v1? XP and/or ... etc ... Is there a way to create a numbering system when a layout is sorted by sub-summary? I would like to have 1-whatever appear in my layout, but need the # to restart with each newly-found item (by which the layout is sorted). For example, I want to number INSTRUMENTS (this is the sorted layout). I want to see 1-25 (or how many) flutes, 1-15 clarinets, 1-56 saxes, etc. Thanks! George

Is it possible to display records that only conform to a set criteria? For example I have a Invoice line table and I only want to display lines where the invoiced field is equal to a particular number.

Has anyone developed a simple grid layout for displaying thumbnail images from object records? I haven't seen any solution where you can have information from multiple records displayed in a horizontal and vertical direction, like a page of lables. I've tried to make labels with the photo on them, but usually it enters the first photo and then ommits the rest. ANY IDEAS???

Is there a way to "freely rotate" text fields? I have a layout that follows an arced path (seating assignments) and want to rotate name fields to follow the varying degrees of the arc. I can only get the fields to rotate by 1/4 turns. Does anyone know a solution? Thanks, George

Is anyone aware whether it is possible to create a layout with modal behavior? So far all I have seen in versions 1-8 are layouts that can be ignored by users, no modal behavior at all thus. Any hints welcome, and yes you can make a field mandatory but true modal behavior prevents you to even quit the application before answering/adding the needed information TIA Rob

Hello, I am attempting the following: select a whole layout, copy, go to a new layout (the same file, the same table), paste the layout. While the layout is still "intact" based on positioning and formatting, all the fields are blank! It's like the look of the layout came, but the fields became undefined. Help?

I am trying to add a checkbox to a layout. I have defined a value list and formatted the field as checkbox set and included the value list. When I enter the browse mode the field is there but not as a checkbox. To make sure I did it properly I created a new file and duplicated the procedure above and it worked fine. In a layout I have a portal with a field model and then dimesion fields A,B,C,D. pending on the model entered then various fields must be filled in as mandatory. Example: if Model 'E90' then only field A must be filled. If model 'TR' then fields A,B,C must be filled. If Model 'TC' Then fields A & C must be filled. I have added fields to use on a layout in list view. I have played around with the positioning and now have a few fields which are slightly taller than others. It is not easy to adjust the heights of all the fields accurately. When I used Microsoft Access, there was a tool to resize the field if you changed the font size etc. I can't find out how to do this in FileMaker. Any ideas?

I have a simple database with three fields: title, description, and date. I prefer browsing in the Table View. The title is short and only takes one line. The description can be a line or a paragraph or two. I would like to have the row height expand or contract according to how much info is there. That doesn't seem possible. It's either one line or choose a static, custom length. But in choosing the custom length to accommodate the longest description, there's a whole lot of wasted space between rows--printing becomes overwhelming. Any suggestions how to have the rows dynamically expand or contract?

I have a client running FMP8v2 on two Mac OSX 10.3.9 computers over a network. The issue is that when I am on a layout and create a new record (both scripted and using drop-down method), my layout switches. I cannot figure out why. My script (I built to test) forces the layout I want to stay on, but does not seem to do anything. I am logged in as Admin with Full Access so there should be no permission issues. Thoughts? I am designing an estimating database for my landscape company. There are times on the estimate that I would like to text in more information than the description field can show. Is there a way to do this within a limited description field within a portal?: I do not have to read all the information in the layout, but want all of the information printed on the estimate. FM 7 Our solution has 100+ layouts with the same interface for navigation (buttons that look like folder tabs). The graphics for the button (blue if active / gray if not) and the labels (Home, Contacts, Projects, etc) are relationship based - so I can change them whenever needed and have them change on all 100+ layouts. On some layouts with several portals, the button and it's label fill in slow. The whole navigation interface shows quickly, but the buttons in questions (when you click it and go to that layout) fills very slow - showing up the same time the portals fill. A report in Preview mode shows different results on 2 different computers, one running WinXP, the other Win2000. The correct results are on the WinXP. Both computers are running FMP 6 Dev. To compound the problem, they both show the correct results in Browse mode. Any clue as to what's going on?

I migrated a FMP 4 file to FMP 8. The original file has many layouts, which we are working on triming down, however, the first time I opened the file, the scroll control for the layouts had a nice new twist. When you were at the "First" layout, you could scroll UP to the "Last" layout, a very nice shortcut when you have hundreds(!) of layouts. However, after the first opening the scrolling function returned to the original, which requires scrolling through the long list to get to the bottom. We are working on reorganizing the layouts, deleting some, and just not showing all of them in the list, but if I could restore that circular scrolling, it would be a big …
