Calculation Engine (Define Fields)

Please help a newbie! I have a database of our membership - both current and past members. On my splash screen I have successfully included the number of active members (Status(CurrentFoundCount) from the total (Status(CurrentTotalCount). I would like to include on this same layout fields that calculated the number of active males and active females. I have scripts that find these records, I just can't figure out how to get these record totals into separate fields called Males-Active and Females-Active. Your help is appreciated.

I was hoping to get some help on a quoting system I am working on. This is a quoting system for a granite company. In the granite industry the customer is charged based off the height and on certain granite pieces and sometimes it is based off the width and in either case the Sq Foot rate. For example a piece of granite that is: L W H 30” x 6” x 20” So how we figure it is Length x Height / 144 which gives you the Sq Foot of that piece. So using the above size the Sq Foot would be 5 Sq Foot. Now I have to add a one time setup rate and Sq Foot Rate based off the height. Here is my range. Height Setup Rate Per Sq. I have files in a container, reference (shortcut). I want to be able to find a file in this container and have it open automatically. Is this possible to do and if yes, how? I have a script that already finds the job but I want when I find it for the file to open automatically.

I'm looking for help in how to import a folder full of pdf files. I have a database with a container field, but can't seem to find a way to quickly add a bunch of files. It would take FOREVER to do it individually.

Each record of my database represents a department of our company. Fields within each record (department) list employee names and titles. For each department, I need a field that calculates the number of managers, another field that calculates the number of salespersons, and another that calculates the number of administrators. I need the results to appear within each record, not in a summary field in a report. I can create numeric 'if' fields for each employee field, then a calculation field that adds the results. Microsoft Excel has a function called "Goal Seek". In this function you use a variable to affect a constant to produce a desired result. For example: 15% X 200 = 30 In Goal Seek, each of these values is interchangeable. You can select the desired end result or the desired variable and Goal Seek will produce the third value. Goal Seek also allows the mathematical operators to be interchangeable. Is there any way to do something like this inside Filemaker? Thanks, Jarvis

Is it possible to set up a formulas to recognizie a word if it matches a certain percent of another word in a seperate field? My existing small biz file calculates GST @ 7%, but as of July 1, 2006 GST is now 6%. Right now the calculation is simply Total Sale GST=Total Sale * .07. How do have Total Sale GST check the Date Sold field before applying the tax?

I am puttin together a database for the university's public affairs office that I work in. We are trying to catalog all of the images that we have from various shoots. Currently I am up to 2500 images which cause the database to run realy slow. These images were inserted into the container field to allow the other users on the network to see the actual picture and not just the file path refrence that you get when you use the import function. Is there a way that I can get the picture to show up in the container without having to insert the entire picture (someone told me that i should link it with relational keys but that is total greek to me).

I'm trying to create this calculation with little results. What I need to do is have a field calculation ('CALC PHASE') that bases different results based on the contents/value from another field (titled 'PHASE'). In my FM file in Date you can see in field 7/31/2006--if you click direct on the filed, but if you click outside the field it says, july2313200 -- which , of course, is bizarre. Unfortunately, it's this second version which prints out. any ideas appreciated. thanks.

I have a database of Driver Ed students. I need a formula for a calculation field that will calculate the student's age in years on the last day of class for their session. The database already has a field for "birthdate" (ex 11/06/1991.) It has a field for "session" (ex Session 1, Session 2, etc). It has a calculation field for "date of last class" (ex if the session = Session 1 then the last day of class is 9/30/2006. I have a table with one field in called Set Fiscal Yr. This holds the current fiscal yr code. I have a field in my receipt file called fiscal year. I want this field to auto-enter the fiscal year listed in the set fiscal year table. I tried to use a calculated field by having the receipt fiscal year field equal the set fiscal year field but that does not work. Any suggestions?

Not really sure where to post this one.... I noticed today while in layout mode in one of the DBs at work that the majority of fields are titled with generic slogans (see attachment...replaces field names with things such as "Accessible power", "graphic reporting", "Powerful scripts", "Customizable buttons", etc.). Container fields show the filemaker logo, etc. This is in FM Dev 7 However when the fields are double clicked they show the correct name (and the database works just fine). I have a program that asks for the date when something occurs. Typically the date is the same for all records. I want the user to be able to enter the date for the first record and have it copied to all the other records. However, it needs to be editable since sometimes the date will be different- therefore a global field will not work. I've been using the middlewords function to extract some data from a space delimited source. it worked fine, especially given that the number of spaces is completely variable, except that some of the data uses underscores, i.e. JIM_B and the middlewords function sees this as another space (the same is also true of slashes). Is there any workaround to stop it doing this?

So my Primary Key is made up of a project_id and a project_sub_id. In my case I intend to use this to track books using the project_id and various editions, translations, ect. using a project_sub_id. To rephrase, there will be multiple records for the same project_id but each project_id can have muliple sub_ids which are simply incrementing numbers. Now, getting the project_id to increment is no problem. However, how am I going to get the sub_id to increment properly? Mentally I'm thinking of relating the table to itself using the project_id, finding the current max sub_id and simply incrementing it in the new record by one. My only problem is that I do…

Okay, I'm creating a very simple database (no cmplx relationships), with a single container field. I can click on the field and insert a document, no problem. But when I double-click on the document, nothing happens... no file launches. Any idea why this is happening? Hi I have a FM solution with over 5,000 records and each record has a container field with a PDF file referenced to it. What I would like to do is have a field in each record that tells me the path of it's PDF. Is this possible. Also if I was to move the location of the folder full of PDF's is there a easy way to link the PDF's back to the correct record.

There are two methods of commenting calculations: C style which beings with /* and ends with */ C++ style which starts with // and ends at end of line When reading calculations, C style (appears) more cluttered, requires more typing, and requires remembering to close it. Nesting sounds good but a hard return in the calc would achieve the same results and no close required. C style opens up possibility of errors (forgetting to add the close) or even using it when not needed as FM even demonstrates (I'm sure without meaning to). I am trying to build a database that I can import pictures, pdfs, quicktime and aiff files. I tried the templates that came with my new version of Filmaker Pro 8 but I just cannot seem to make it happen. What I need a database that can be accessed by Mac and PC and has these different types of files in them. I have the pictures working well but how do I get pdfs so you can read them and the sound files to work? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! The GetAsNumber function returns the value "?" when passed the parameter "?". This behaviour confused me at first, just thought I'd try to get some feedback before reporting it to FileMaker as a bug. The question mark symbol is not a valid number and when passed as part of a string it is correctly stripped out as non-numeric, i.e. "1?1" -> "11" But it is not removed when it is on its own, i.e. "?" -> "?" I'm inclined to believe this is not a bug, it seems to go against the logic of the function however a single question mark usually indicates an error in a calculation, I think the function is merely cascading this error e.g. if the following calc …

Hello, I have a layout with a series of repeating fields. Each field has a title included above it. Ex. Things I Like Cars Sports Penguins Earmuffs But for all the records that I have, some of these repeating fields are left completely empty. I'm wondering if there's a way I can make these titles not appear if the field is empty. I've tried a calculation, treating the rep field as a boolean, to no avail, like this: If (Passions; "Things I Like"; "") where Passions is the repeating field of Cars, Sports... Any suggestions? Is there a way to tell a QT movie inside a FMP Container to go to a certain time within the movie? For example, I have a 10-second clip in the container, and I want a button to advance the clip to to the frame at the 2-second point. This is trivial with AppleScript: tell application "QuickTime Player" select movie 1 at [some frame] end tell It appears FMP is unable to control a QuickTime movie in a Layout; only the user may do that.

I would like to be able to store the paths to documents on the local machine within fields. Then I would like to be able to click on the field and have it open the document that is at the path. Anyone know if that can be done?

The database is currently using Filemaker 6. The problem I am having is that this developer liked to use different types of special characters to mark different types of fields, and now they are causing problem when trying to make a web solution out of the database. Then, I want to be able to display all records where Current Date - ExpireDate is between 4 and 6 months [edited for correction after 1st reply]. How do I go about this? For ease of explanation, let say I am creating a checkbook register. I have two fields "Credits" and "Debits". I am creating a header for the office stationary which included name, address and telephone. Was trying to embed a font icon of a telephone into a calculation just prior to the phone number to avoid writing the word telephone. Actually the calculation is very easy to do with TextFont(text;fontName{;fontScript}) but what I can't find a Font symbol for a telephone icon that is supported by my LaserJet 4000. I'm trying to make a sales report that lists all our customers and their sales total for a certain period and sorts the customers by sales. I had been doing this sort of thing by using a complex relationship between customer and invoice line items with globals for the date range and a calculation field that summed the line items. That worked, but was pretty slow and I though it wasn't the "FileMaker way" since I wasn't using Summary fields. I also need to do some other reports where this approach was getting too complicated. So I'm trying to do it with Summary fields and it's mostly all good except that I can't sort by the sales totals. What's up with…

Hello, I'm working on finalizing my database -- I've come a long way! Regrettably, the wall I've recently hit is a pretty big one. A lot of my calculations in one file take AGONIZINGLY long to compute. I even tried to store them, but I'm unable to do so. :blond: I am a mid-level FM designer so I know when I get the answer to this it's gonna be a 'doh!' minute, but I can't quite figure an elegant way to do this. I've got seventeen number fields in each record - N1, N2,....N17 (representing the players scores [6 regulars 11 guests or former players]) I've got these numbers totalled and averaged. I can't see how to do this in FileMaker - it's easy in Access. After a user leaves a field, I need to 'proper' the data just to ensure that they did not have the Caps Lock on. How do I do this? TIA

I am trying to get a field to show a total of payments in the current fiscal year. I have a table set up to show the fiscal years, their start dates and end dates. I have a field in the payments to show the fiscal year. My first questions is, should I have a calcuation in the fiscal field to determine the fiscal year and how would I do that or should it be a lookup of the fiscal year? Second, to total the fiscal year what calculation would I need summarize this amount? How would this summary know to change from fiscal year to fiscal year?

Hi: I set up a simple DB to illustrate a method I propose to use to Auto-Complete typed in data. I did not want to have an extra record on the DataEntry layout. So I created a record in the table TypeAheadText to hold the Auto-Complete copy. That record is viewed on through a portal the DataEntry layout and copy is formatted in the Data field. The reason for all this is that the DB is used (along with Applescript) to create ads in Adobe InDesign. Is this the best way to use the Auto-Complete feature for this purpose? DataEntryTest.fp7.zip

I'm building a database for my cabinetshop. We fabricate in millimeters but communicate with the customer in inches. We use the Extend function to convert inches to millimeters. If you type in the value 36 inches it displays as 915 millimeters. I would like this value to display in both inches & millimeters, but I would like it to be done with just one field. Is there a way to trick a repeating field into using one calculation for Repetition (1) and another calculation for Repetition (2)? Thanks for any tips, Jarvis

I'm having a problem with the arithmetic for a "subtotal" field that totals up a series of repeated fields. In designing an invoice form, I have repeated fields for product id (linked to a product table with a matching product id field), price, quantity, discount and extended price. This one shouldn't be as complicated as it's becoming... If you want to import a GIF or JPEG into a container from the web, Troi's URL Plug-in takes care of that nicely. But what if you want to import a TIFF or a PDF file? I've also tried using 8.5's web viewer ability, and I don't seem to be able to directly copy from it into a container field. It'll give me either the URL of the image I want or the raw data of the image, but no image. Help!

Since FM7 doesn't recognize 'yes' or 'no' and I don't want my users to have to deal with 1 and 0, I've been creating a calculation "if (field) = "yes", 1,0)" then totalling that field (summary, total of (field)). How do I do this without the middle calculation field? Just total the yes and no responses directly? TIA

Hi, I am just today starting out with Filemaker. I have a couple of questions that may help me on my way. I wish to create a 'Category' table, containing 'ID', 'Name' and 'Parent' field. I would like to be able to do the following. Validate that the 'Parent' field is not the same as the 'ID' field and limit a drop down list to only show records that have a 'Parent' field of zero/null. If anyone has any pointers, I will be glad to hear them.

I want to have specific field do one of 2 things... If the value is greater than 0 I want the text to be green or have a green image behind the text. If the value is less than 0 I want the text to be red or have red image behind the text. Personally I would prefer the text to change color but I am at a complete loss of where to start.

Please help: i have thousands of records with a formatted date field. I need to duplicate this field and its content for all records and then change the date format of the new fields, so i have two date fields with the same date values, but in different formats. Using FM Pro 8... I'm trying store about 1000 precinct maps of our county in a DB. I want to query the DB so that I only export a limited number of maps at a time. For example, export all maps in House District 35. So I've create some text fields that categorize each map by House District, Senate District, Cong. District, and finally Precinct. However, there are actually two types of maps per precinct (TypeA and TypeB)...and possibly 5 maps that cover one precinct. Any way to ease up the import process? I have a runtime (Dev 6) which requires lots of user input. I'm trying to find an easy way to validate each field for proper text useage (not all UPPER or lower). The following works but it's going to take forever to do for each field. Is there a better way? Linked to all my orders I have necessary artwork that I have supplied to me by means of a pdf file. Why can I not view a pdf as I can a .jpeg file? Otherwise, how can I link to the pdf documents so I can view the related documents. Is it possible to ensure that only the related pdf document has a link to a unique ID field within filemaker??

I'm using a calculation to format phone numbers. Unfortunately, it seems that if I make a field a calculation field, when a user enters data into this field from the web, the field always comes up empty. Ok, that makes sense. So I've changed it to a text field. Let's call it PhoneNumber. Now, when the user types in her phone number, it accepts the text, regardless of the format. Then, I've created a new field called PhoneNumberFormatted. I've made it a calculation field that bases its result on the data in PhoneNumber field. I've searched the forums for information about using a mask to hide user input to password type fields, but not found anything. I'm in the process of setting up a Separation Model system to have a secured back end. Because it's a SM app, the Accounts and privileges can't be globally set, since the clients will be adding their user information to the back end only. Therefore, I was planning on having the UI file open and then prompt the user (on a normal layout) for a user name and password, which will then be used to log in to the back end. This must be simple... I am doing a very basic calculation within an invoice table. The figures Net Total: Calculates all the total prices. I show this as 2 decimal places. The tax is calclated.... also shown as 2 decimal places... but when I add The net total + tax .... the sum is rounded up from the actual figures up to 4 decimal places which results in what looks like an incorrect calculation.... in terms of 2 decimal places. for example: I want to show: 255.22 + 44.66 = 299.88 instead I am getting 255.22 + 44.66 = [color:red]299.89 obviously because the calculation is adding three or four decimals and rounding the fi…

I have a calculation field that subtracts one timestamp from another to capture elapsed time. The formula for this field is: (STOP TIME - START TIME)/60. The result shows how many minutes have elapsed from start to stop. I would like this field to display as minutes if the result is less than 60 minutes and hours & minutes if the result is more than 6o minutes. Hi, Just getting into FM 8. Some really nice changes. I love variables, but I'm confused on one point and the documentation is of no help. In the SetVariable dialog box there is a field for repetition. Does this mean the variable can be repeating? If so, this really makes it a very useful thing in that you can create arrays. But I can't seem to make it work this way... Or does this refer to the repetion number of a field that you are using to set the value of the variable? I have a nested case set in my address book that returns one of three counties if the zip code falls in certain ranges. If the zip code does not match any of the ranges I set up in my calculation, is there a way to let the user input the county himself? I’m a newbie with very limited experience and am working on FM6. I am a photographer and desire to create an a automatic licensing form for my images. I have created an input area with 13 fields of the variable data I will need to enter. I then created a text box and used the fields as merge data with text to link it so it looks like a correct sentence. That is my "merge document". Works great. But now I want this "license" to be able to be used in another database and have absolutely no clue how to get the merged text into another DB. So I am obviously not doing it right Any help would be greatly appreciated.
