Value Lists

Is there any way, other than using the first letter of the entry, to select the first item in a pop up list? In other words, I can select the SECOND item with the down arrow key (one keystroke) and enter (second keystroke). If I don't want to use the alpha keys, I have to hit down and then up and then enter to get the first item (three keystrokes). I'd like a key that selects the first item regardless of its first letter. Thank you. Deborah

I have a layout with 5 popup list that ether says active or complete. Its basically a list of things to do. The popup lists are labeled 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. What I need to happen is, when complete is selected in 3, list 4 and 5 will automatically change to complete as well. Any help you can give is much appreciated.

I have a drop down box on a layout that needs to display a list of values from one of three different tables based on the value of another field on the layout. For example, there is a drop down box called "person type" which can be either P for party, W for witness, or A for attorney. When P is selected, I want to poulate another specific menu with names of related parties, and so on. All, created an activity log dbase and have a couple of fields where I am using a pop up menu from a value list. The problem is that while it all works, it is extremely slow. As I go from field to field it takes 3+- seconds for the menu to appear and once you make a selection it takes a second or two to do anything. I am having trouble understanding how filtered valuelists work. I have done them two different ways. But both ways were from records that were already created and had a reference. What I am trying to do on my next project is show related records through the value list from a field. What I have is a student who wants to join in 2005 and I have a list of classes that have a field 2005. I created a seperate occurance to equal the two filds accross the tables and I made my value list based on the classID field. hi, i want to compile a number of separate fields defined to appear with checkbox, and each having only a single value (eg. field S1 containing value S1, field S2 containing value S2, field S3 containing value S3...), into a single new field "publications" i have created using the list of values (S1, S2, S3...) defined to appear as checkboxes. i do a find for values S1 in field S1, and check the S1 box in the new "publications" field, then replace (cmd-"=") to set the value S1 in "publications" for the found records. i try to do the same for the value S2, but this doesn't seem to work, the replace asks if i really want to set the value "S1" for all found records...…

From these selections I would like to copy the names of exercises into separate fields(within the same record) excercise1, exercise2, exercise3, ....exercise10. I have a value list containing training sessions A, B, C, D, E, and F. I want to summarize these values at the end of my report. For instance, I have a field where only one of the training sessions (A through F) can be selected at a time for the participants of the training. Within a record I need to ensure that the numerical value of a particular field falls in a range that is specific for that record. The range is quite different for each record. How do I define that field? Example- I am entering lists of certificates issued by my clients. The unique reference number on each certifcate must fall within a specific range, say 201 to 250, for that client. Hi, I have a value list (pop-up menu), whose values are pulled up from a field in another file. That field is a compilation of 2 date fields in that file (DateToText(PeriodStart)&"-"&DateToText(PeriodEnd))- ie. it is a text field. I'd like these (text) values in the pop-up menu to be sorted by PeriodStart, now they seem to be in random order. I need a dynamic value list but have not seen any examples of exactly what I need. I have 2 tables... LEADERS & GROUPS Each GROUP needs to be assigned a LEADER. I get the LEADER value list from the LEADER table... not a problem. But once a LEADER has been assigned to a GROUP I no longer want them to display on the value list. There are certain fields where it would be useful for Filemaker to offer already entered completions to a field, depending on what you have already entered. This would operate like the address field in OSX Mail or the URL address in IE, in which drop downs appear with URLs already in the cache to click on, depending on what you have typed. Hi, I'm using a value list of elements with checkboxes. For each record, an element is checked if it is used. A record can have more than one element checked. Records are into groups (sub-summaries). Each group needs a summary for how many of each element are checked. I found myself having to create a lot of fields to do this. 3 field for each element of the value list. - a field per element with a calculation with "PatternCount" - a summary field to get the "total" of the calculated field above: - a group summary field for this element Since i have 5 elements in the value list. Table A contains investors names Table B contains various funds A unique identifier is a name, fund, and account number. This is a calculation field. I want to fill out a form and I have to choose the correct person and fund. I thought I could use the unique identifier in a value list, but FM won't let me. It won't store the calculation since it uses values from related fields. I can make my own unique identifier instead of calculating one, but this seems an unnecessary thing to do, as the computer can calculate the info. So I do I get this to work in a value list?

Is there a way to import the custom values from a value list from one version of a solution to a newer version of the same database? When I update a database that I have at a client's site, I typically bring a clone of the update, and run an import script to bring in all their data. The one thing that gets missed is if they edit the custom values of a value list. I have defined a global field that is set up for 10 repetitions. On my layout I have 10 fields which each respectively refer to this global field. The entry into these fields is done via a common value list. I basically use this to keep track of different versions. ie/ field 1 = version a14, field 2 = version a15, field 3 = version a14. This setup has been working fine so far until the other day when I put it online to share with other users. I have this value list that is populated from the USE CUSTOM VALUES option. I use it, for example, to select BillyBob, Skippy or Rex as a good candidate to assign a task. Every now and then I would like the option to de-select these candidates. IE, I would like to be able to click into a field and select (NOTHING), thereby setting the field to empty. I find that in FM7 a value list in a field formatted as Pop-up List is very, very slower than when the same field is formatted as Pop-up Menu. Does anyone agree with me? Thanks for any help.

I have 3 text fields in a FM database... one is the users name, the other is their function (eg painter or plumber) and the other is the group (a letter reference eg A,B,C or D) that he/she belongs to. Now what I want the main database to do is populate a drop down box based on a matching group reference - for example the main database records says this job belongs to "group a" and we are looking for "plumbers" only)... so I want a pull down list to only have group "a" members who have a function of "plumber" generated from the other database. I have a little newsletter and sell advertising to supplement the cost. The cost buy an ad depends on the size of the ad and the amount of subscribers. The simplest explanation is to say that I have three tables, two main record tables and a join table between them. On the layout for one of the main tables, I have menu set to display a value list which is defined to show only values from the other table starting from the join table. I have several dynamic value lists that are all dependant on each other. When I change one value in a value list I would like the value lists that are dependent that list to be refreshed or automaticlally show a blank. This will force the user to select data from those fields. The problem is that when I change one field the remaining fields still shows data from a prior selection which might not necesarily be a member the value list. What I am trying to do is this: I have a field, "Denomination" which consists of a value list with different coin denominations: half-cent, large cent, small-cent, two-cent piece, three-cent piece, etc. I have another field, "Type" which should be the specific type of a particular denomination. Is there a way to change the value list that shows up in a popup list based on whats shown in another list? An example would be: You have a layout with 2 popup list. The first one gives a list of office products(pens, pencils, paper, etc.) The second popup list will give a list of accessories that go with the product selected in the first popup list. The catch is, that the contents of the accessories list in the second popup list changes everytime the product in popup list 1 changes. So if you selected pens in popup list 1, pocket protector would show up as an accessory in popup list 2, however, it would not show up if pencils or paper was selected. I hope this doe…

There must be a simple solution - but I can't find it. When a user enters a ctiy name I would like to add the postcode and state at the press of a button. The postcodes come from a value list based on all cities and postcodes already entered. I would like to do this by using the vlaue lists and there seems to be all the functions except one. The value list for postcode and town can be put into two global fields with 'ValueListItems ( Get ( FileName ) ; "Postcodes")' and ValueListItems ( Get ( FileName ) ; "City"). I am working on a DB for employee tracking and I have a field called "Employee Status". I have a drop down of 5 items. 2 of wich are the words "Vacant" and "Contract". If I select either of those two words, a second window pops up and asks for two date values that must be entered. If I write a calculation for the "Employee Status" field and define as such. In table 2 I want 2 fields to contain related checkboxes in that when an item in field 2.1 is checkboxed, it is automatically checkboxed in field 2.2 Ideally this would be both ways so that when an item in field 2.2 is checkboxed it is automatically checkboxed in field 2.1 an example DB is attached. I have the following value list: A B C A&B A&C B&C A&B&C If I use a Pop-up List the values display correctly, but if I use a Pop-up Menu the last value shows as A&B&&C even though if it's selected the field is set to A&B&C. Normally this wouldn't be a problem and I'd just use a Pop-up List but the rest of the program is almost done now and I'm using Pop-up Menus and find they seem quicker and better for the program I'm building. I believe I saw how to do this once but I can't find it again. I have a contacts field that I want to add a pop up menu to. It currently has contacts in the field. I would like to create a value list that contains those contacts and will be populated with any new contacts that are entered. I thought it had something to do with a self join but I couldn't get it to work. Contact Field: Either select a value from the list or enter in a new contact. In our FM-system, we have a separate file for suppliers (printers, papermills, prepress ...). I have tried to make a dynamic valuelist for each type of supplier, which works fine as long I'm in the same file. For example the field PRINTER_LIST (calc = "printer") is related to the field TYPE. Then I want to use this value list in another file in the system, I create a value list in the second file using "Use value list from another file". But that doesn't work... Any ideas? I have created a dynamic value list via a relationship. I would like to have another dynamic value list that is a subcategory of the first value list. I am trying to use checkboxes, and they aren't showing anymore. I have about 30 layouts using them, and they are all fine. Now on new layouts I try to use them and the values come up, but now actual boxes. They appear if you left click on them, but cannot be selected and disappear when the cursor moves. This is strange... I've set up a simple database with two tables... one holding a list of all possible entities (ValueTable), and another that uses those entities (MainDB). I have a value list that pulls data from the ValueTable table. Hello everyone, I thought I knew how to do this but I just can not figure that last step out. I have made a portal that indexes its self from a checkbox simply names Yes... That works well.. I would like to flip this around... meaning I want my portal to display everything that is not checked off. Hi I tried to make dynamic Value lists to each dynamic field in a portal, meaning - if I change a the field in a column, then I get a different VL on that field. I played with it, and I can't index the field that stored the VL, thus I can't make it a VL... Hi, I have a layout which contains a popup-list. How can I stop users from typing in there? I had validation being done by FM7, but went to my own vallidation scheme and now I either have to stop them from typing in there - or compare the selected item in teh list and then see if it's in the table which the value list uses to render itself. Oh and also these fields are just copied values - not related. sorry, one more thing, I would like to the ability to let the user click a button and add an item too. I have a field "Category" that is defined as a value list containing Member Officer Resource And I have value lists for each of those Categories. I want to have field ("Role") next to it on the layout whose content is chosen from a drop down list. The drop down list that is displayed in the Role field should be conditional upon the the contents of the Category field. I work in the print industry and I am in the process of creating an estimation database. What I would like to do is have two drop down menus for specifying the type of paper depending on the type of printing. Here is what I mean: If I choose color printing in the first field then the second field will show the paper choices for color printing. If I choose B/W printing in the first field then the second field will show the paper choices for B/W printing. Hello Together, contrary to check boxes where you can select more than one box I thought that radio buttons work in a way that you can only choose just one. I have added 3 radio buttons in my db and I can check all three of them, better: when I check them I can't turn them off anymore. Then what I did was write a script and create a button for it. I now used 3 check boxes instead of 3 radio buttons. I made the button invisible placed the button/script ontop of a check box. The effect was that my script did clear the other two boxes but I can't select the one I want. Is there a trick to it?? How can I use the radio buttons that if I selct one the other tw…

Dear FM People, I have a field which is defined by a value list with different abbreviations for locations in the US. Also I have created a calculation for this field which goes like =If(Tour Name = "Route_66" , "ORD" , If(Tour Name = "California_Dreaming" , "LAX" , 0)... Now I have one Tour Name which requires a manual input of the abbreviation because it varies. This input shall be selected from the value list. Being that I like to keep data links nice and arbitrary, I'm in the habit of using integer ID's (auto-generated serial numbers in FM) as primary and foreign keys. I have a feeling this just ain't going to be possible, but you never know. I want to join 2 (or more) value lists together. In a typical situation I want to create a value list of Consultant IDs with "All Consultants" at the top, and preferable a divider. For example: All Consultants ------- REP001 Cameron REP004 Sandra REP005 Angelina The name is from a second field. I know of some very "unelegant" ways to achieve this, so currently I have to create custom lists (which need to be updated for rep changes) and then extract the RepID from that. I am creating a page with a series of checklists of "to-do" tasks, i.e.: Opening Spread: x manuscript received x text poured x art received x art placed Lesson pages x design completed x design approved etc... The checklists are based on value lists for each field. I tried basing the value lists on related tables, but in the end I did it just using custom values so they can display in custom order. I would like the user be able to add checklist items. Here's the problem: One table full of items, each assigned to a category. Another which has (20+) fields that get populated by items from the first table (via a value list). That is, each record has 20+ slots for these items. Each of these 20+ fields is paired individually with a category field. Hi, I have a tester who is testing a little program i wrote. She reported that she tabbed over to a popup menu, which normally drops down a list when you tab into it and today it didn't work. She tabs into the popup and no drop down appears. Has anyone seen a case where when you tabbed to the value list, the list did not drop down? I did discover that they are running Fm7 v1 but in the fix list, i didn't see this listed as a bug. they are also running from a server, the server is mac OS X fm7 Server. and her machine is a windowsXp. I would like my users to populate estimate line items by marking checkboxes from a value list. The problem is the value list contains about 75 items. Is there an easy way to have the functionality of checkboxes but also the scroll bar functionality?

Is there any way to make a value list populated by the file system? i.e. to browse directories and select entries from them to be placed into fields. The equivalent in Visual Basic are the Drive, Directory and File list boxes. Any help would be much appreciated.

In FM7 when formatting a field for value list , when formatted as popup list the response is extremely slow but when formatted as a pop up menu the reponse is as fast a fm6. Here is a simple question, but I'm stumped. I have a list of contract records on a summary page, each contract record has a value list check-box which indicates the contract has been signed. The value list has only one entry which is a space (" ") as I don't need the text, only the check box. So, on this summary page (list view) I have a trailing grand summary part of the total of contract amounts (contract_total), but want a total of only signed (contract_total_signed) contracts as well. How do I perform this calculation?

Hi, I'm trying to have a changing value lists field by a case calculation based on field "project". Ex. "project 1" has 2 value lists "categories" & "items" from fields in two other related files, as does "project2" and so on. I'm having trouble with one of the resulting "items" value lists - only 5 out of 103 values in the list appear. Basically i have a field in Attendance call ARC which is a check box value list of Yes or No. Now, I want to display this ARC field in the Student Database but it is not doing it. it just display a box but not the check mark.
