I just completed a back-up of my hard drive (on on Macintosh 8.6, using FileMaker 4.0). Then when I tried to open my database, up popped a dialog box: "The access privileges in this file have b een damaged or possibly tampered with." Huh? I"ve never set any access privilege, never set a password. I've tried running DiskWarrior and Norton. I've tried replacing the file with the one from the backup. I've tried trashing my Filemaker preferences. But I can't access my database...and without that, I'm out of business! Can anyone help? Thanks, Dan O'Day [email protected]

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have one dedicated server that runs FM server 5.0. Through a hub 3 Imacs and a PC are connected on this server. Two Imacs and the PC work well. One Imac is terribly slow... I tried everything. - Checked the ethernet connection of the Imac but speed is good with other tasks (internet, copying files from other computers etc.) - Checked filemakers settings and used the same as the other Imacs. - Reinstalled everything from scratch (including a new installation of Os9) - Assigned more Ram to filemaker on the problem mac - Settings are TCP/IP on the problem mac It really looks like there is a local problem with this one I…

My client is currently running FMP Server 5.5 on a G4 with OS 9.1. FileMaker recommends OS X as the operating system of choice because of its advanced networking and file handling features. I have been running FileMaker Pro 5.5 on my laptop in OS X 10.1.1 with no problems whatsoever. Nevertheless, before updating the server operating system, I'd like to hear the experiences of anybody who has gone this route. The server will be used virtually exclusively for FM server ( I will leave file sharing turned on, as I keep update software stored there, and occasionally need to access it. However, sharing will not be available to any other user, so I expect any performance hit…

Here's what happened: I was creating Multiple Users accounts on Mac 9 machine, and when I was done, I logged on as one of the users. When I tried to access File Maker Server, I couldn't even see it on the network. I had to mannually create a new file in File Maker, go to preferences and swith the protocol to TCP/IP (Somehow by default it got switched to AppleTalk). Only then did I see the server in Hosts window. Question: Should it matter if my protocol is AppleTalk? I should be able to access the server with either protocol, should I not? Thanks in advance

I am in the process of setting up a in-house / web server for Filemaker 5 and Lasso. I have been using webstar with our current provider but since I am doing it in-house I am looking at what is the best Webstar or Web Objects? Am I better off creating my web server with OS X or 9.2.1? Any feedback would be great.

I have a major problem with some of my files 'jamming' after data is entered or simple scripts are run. I get the hourglass for anything up to 20 seconds. Everything in the system works, but with these delays on a couple of the files (out of 17). I think it may be down to the kak virus that I thought I had got rid of. The same problem exists with the same files when transfered (via Zip disc) to other machines. Any help greatly appreciated. Andrew Bruno

Similar to a previous forum posting, I have OS 9.2.1 and FM 5.5. The installer works fine but when I attempt to run FM I get either an Apple Type 1 (bus error) or a Type 2 (address error) after the splash screen is displayed and the fonts preferneces built and apple talk connected etc. I have tried removing all refernces to FM including the FM Pro Fonts file and re-installing but get the sam eerror. In desperation, I re-installed our earlier version of FM 3.0 but this gave the sam error. I have tried booting the system with all extensions off etc but still no joy. It has been suggested that these errors may be caused by fonts....anyone have any good ideas what to look f…

I recently moved FMServer v5.02 from an old NT 4.0 server box to a new Windows 2000 server. When I run FMpro v5.03 on the server console it maxes out the CPU and the performane is unacceptable...The reason why i need to get this working is because of remote users that need to connect to the server via pcanywhere.... Thanx in advance! Blair

I've successfully installed fmserver 5.5 on a redhat linux box and it seems fast and stable. However when started fmserver won't automatically launch the databases in /var/fmserver directory. I've checked permissions on the files and they are fine. It will only open the files when I run the command 'fmserverd open /var/fmserver/*' Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the autostart databases feature working?

Hi guys/gals, Is there a way to minimise the amount of information streamed from the server by, when logging on to a client machine, copying the latest prices of stock, client details (each in their own respective databases)onto your local computer, then only go to the server for 'live' info on stock availabilty? I hope that sentance explains my question, but, here's some more info if your confused! At the moment I have a 'Point of Sale' database which pulls info of clients and stock from two other databases. There will be 30 computers (iMacs) running from a server and I want to minimise the amount of work the server does because of getting requests from all the compu…

I am hosting a set of databases via FileMaker 5 on a Win2000 box. The databases are set up to share via TCP/IP. Sharing works great when I log into the computer with my Admin password. However, this server is also used as a workstation by technicians in my lab, and they log in with their own non-Admin passwords. When the technicians are logged in, the FileMaker databases do not appear to other clients on our network. I set Win2000 security permissions for the database directory to "full control" for all users, but this did not solve the problem. Any suggestions? Thanks, Scott Sillett

Can anyone help!!! I have a small Mac network running on Appletalk/Ethernet. I wish to share a Filemaker database which is on a PC in the office, with all the Macs as well. I have put PC Maclan on the PC and I can see it on the Appletalk network. However the Filemaker on the PC won't let me share the database over an Appletalk network. Does anyone have a protocol for this or know how I can get round it? For Your Info: I am using Windows 98 on the PC and OS 9.1 on the Macs. I can't run the Macs on a TCP/IP network as they all have a seperate internet connection (e.g. ADSL, ISDN etc.)

In practice it is giving me multiple errors depending on various settings that I have tried. Is anyone familiar with this that could point out some possible pitfalls?

We have currently in our small business 2 Win2000 servers(same build and version) with filemaker 5.5 installed and running. Both servers have been setup almost identically but only one server shows up in the local hosts list when trying to connect from a win98 pc client. There is no conflict whatsoever regarding ip addresses we run an internal 10.10.10.x network and both servers are gated through the same firewall. The user accounts are the same on both servers and we have confirmed that both filemaker programs are identically setup regarding user and protocols(TCP/IP) and multiusersharing. We can ping both servers without trouble and theres no difference in the routing…

Well, I'm still having problems with this server. I set up FM Server on a second machine and Unlimited on this machine. Unlimited machine opens eight databases as guest with Websharing enabled and serves them for the web. FileMaker goes down three or four times a day. I've got 60mb memory allocated to it. I understand that FM cannot handle multiple requests when the results page (i.e html page post the query) exceeds 40KB (more than 15 results). I have a couple databases where this could happen regularly. Could this bring down the whole app? Would it make a difference if I reduced the number of possible results per page?

Hello, This is really a Unix question, since I'm working in the terminal window of Mac OS X. I am running a web-accessible FileMaker database and have just moved it to OS X. So far the transfer has worked. But, I want to run FileMaker as a background process so that (i) a user doesn't have to be logged in for it to be running (i.e. security), and (ii) other people can log in while it's running. I know this is possible in Unix (the apache web server runs in the background). So far I have tried (from the terminal window): I. open -a "FileMaker Pro.app" "Database Name" & I get something like: [2] 795 Then I try to put job 2 into the background with: …

My client has, and would like to keep, basic info/bookkeeping info in Access. The graphics dept uses Macs to produce ads. We are going to use FMP to manage the ads crossplatform (no big deal). G4 / 400Mhz / 192mb. We have a database of over 300,000 customers. When we need to update/search/index etc. large amounts of this database it seems to take forever. We had an independent person set up our new invoicing / database system. He worked only w/ the PC version in the past. He seems to think that similar functions and sized databases on the PC run MUCH faster than our Mac set-up. We are running a 1000/T ethernet so our network hums. Why would we experience such perfoemance slowdown? Filemaker tech support said to allocate 45 mb of ram...any more would be negligable in perfomance benefit. PROGRAM PREFERENCES CONTINUALLY FORGOTTEN I have set up a FMP database on the TCP/IP network here at work. There are three shared files hosted by a dedicated machine. As we all know, for users to access these shared files across the network the 'user name' and proper 'network type' must be set in general preferences. The database works great when FMP chooses to remember this info. However, FMP5.0.3 often forgets the these pesky program preferences . . . username field is 'blank' and network protocol is 'none' . . . How can I ensure that fmp remembers its program settings?

Dear Members When printing reports from FMP3 and FMP5, both on iMacs running OS9, I have problems with random text characters disappearing at the ends of words. Hi, I set up fields through which local files can be activated with the contextual menue (FM4). Although it works fine on Macs, my colleague cannot activate files (located on his own disk) the same way on his PC (Win 95). Strangely enough, when the PC file path entered in FM is copied in a Word document, files can be accessed from Word on the PC. The url.dll file is present. in general, is there a way to have files accessible from both PC and Macs despite the fact that file paths are written differently in the two platforms ? (whithout making a web server). Any solution ? What is missing ? Thanks for any advice.

This is very odd.... I just created a new DB and set it for Multi user. But it is not showing up on certain computers... Here is the scenario : We have 11 computers networked to a server. At the moment only 8 of them are on. The weird thing is that only 5 of those computers can see the host of the file and can share. We own 7 copies of Filemaker and 6 of those computers have their own filemaker and rest share the last filemaker since they are hardly used, and they cannot simoultaneously be used. But the computer i'm on can't see it. I checked everythig. All the computer has their own serial numbers (so nothing illegal.. hehe). They all have their own I.P. address…

Hi- We have a very small office (under 10 people), and have been using FMP as long as I can remember. We recently upgraded to 5 (right before 5.5 was released, go figure). Since we don't have an extra Mac lying around, the office manager hosts. Needless to say, the performance is less than stellar- lots of crashes, speed of host computer is horrible, etc. It finally occurred to me (after reading it in the FMP 5 manual) that we could use the never-touched Gateway PC to play host. I don't have the software for this yet- I'm still trying to convince my boss that this is our best bet. So here are my questions (sorry for the long intro): 1. Will there be a problem using a…

I'm not familiar with Citrix, but my client wants to host the database off of a Citrix server and Windows NT. My question - It appears taht through the use of Citrix, each client that connects will not have to have a copy of FileMaker Pro locally installed and go through the standard process of specifying the host. I would also assume that global fields do not work the same way since they are not actually on the users machine. Also - it appears that only the FileMaker Executible can be served and then each user musst go through the process of finding the aactual data files to open. We tried publishing the actual data files instead of the application and it didn't wo…

I'm running FMP 5 Unilimited (connected to WSC on OS X Server 1.2 w/Apace) on an iMac (333Mhz) and I've just upgraded from 64Megs of Ram to 160Megs. Now I've got plenty (70 allocated to FMP - it only seems to be using about 50). So I'm just wondering is there ANY reason performance wise that I should leave VM turned on? Thanks, -Arin

I have set the files to Multi user or multi user hidden. I open the files on one pc then go to the other to open as guest, I have tried on both pcs. Using FMP5.0v3 with unique serial numbers. I can see the printers and other files and folders on the network. When I start FMP and select open then Hosts I get an empty dialog box, I click the locals hosts but get nothing. I expect I am doing something totally wrong and probably missing something simple. Any help appreciated.

I am new to Filemaker so excuse me if this is a dumb question. At our church we have moved a FM database from a users workstation to a SBS4.5 (NT4.0) server so that it will get backed up to tape each night. The problem is that as long as the data resides on the server and is openned from a workstation, it will only open as a read-only database. If I move it back to the workstation it opens just fine. The database was placed in a folder on the server that is shared with full rights to the users that need to access the data. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Chris [email protected]

AAAAAAAAAAARGH! i'm hosting an fm database via FM server, but computers in different zones can't see the host at all. is it a problem with filemaker that it can't see hosts in different subnets? I checked the connectivity otherwise and everything seemed to be working. I'm running the server on NT, and the client machines are both Mac and PC running FM5. I'm using TCP/IP as the network protocol in FM. Is there anything I can do? thanks, Ati, jedi master

In a 10/100BaseT in-house Ethernet network, we have 6 FM 5.0.3 files being hosted on a G4/733 acting as the server, OS 9.1, using TCP/IP as the FM protocol for connectivity with the 2 PC's on the network. There are usually 8 to 11 connected users at any given time, and for the most part, everything works fine; however about twice a day, the client Macs/PCs lose contact with the server files. The server itself is running fine (not crashed), but if I quit FM on any client machine and relaunch, when I press the Hosts button, no files show up. The only solution seems to be to quit the files on the server, relaunch, and have the clients launch and connect again, and sometim…

I'm interested in relating a Contacts FM DB to Form fields in Word 98 for Mac. The relational link would be the last name that I'd like to select from a pop-up window. I could also use a link that would be the first letter of their last name. I'd like to pull their first name, company name, address, ph. no & fax no. from my FM DB into the form fields in Word 98. Can this be done?

Hi, A client of mine is running a solution since one year. His set-up is NT server running FMP5 and 12 PCs (win95 & 98). A couple of weeks ago someone in the company decided to doanload a Service Pack Upgrade from Microsoft and installed it on the server (great idea!! this person is Not computer litterate and just was on the MS site and thought it was a cool thing to do!!!). Since then the clients do not "see" the host files anymore. I have reinstalled FMP, but nothing. The solution for me is to install the files on another machine, then no problem. Any suggestions?? Thanx, Steven

I am having several problems: Info: Database shared on a Novell 3.12 server, PC’s on Windows 95/98. 1. Why is it that I have different number of record of the same database on different PC’s? Why is it that when a client captures or updates a record the information is not available to the other PC’s but yet on the PC that created the record the information is there? 2. Why is it that we have to recover the database all the time?? 3. Our last problem was that we had on the database over 340 records and between the morning and this afternoon we are mysteriously down to 240...:? Any help will be appreciated...!!

Hi all, I have a Mac (G4) running FMPserver over tcp/ip (10 mac clients + 1 PC). The PC (win98) does not "see" the host's files. (It sees the other Macs and printers in the Network browser and it connects to the internet through the router). I have reinstalled FMP and checked that tp/ip is the protocol. I have set-up Mac/PC soilutions before and never had this problem. It usually works fine without any configuration. Any ideas of where to check ?? Thanks, Steven

A few threads have danced around this, but my situation may be a bit different: I have a brand-new G4/533 (384MB, OS9.1) on which I have set up a likewise new FMP5 server app. Even without any databases running, the server will crash 1-2 times a day as long as the FMP Server app is running. With databases open, the same 1-2 (sometimes more) crashes. I have gone to an OS9.1 base set of extensions; I have tried adding RAM (up to 200; that seemed to help for a while, but now the crashes have returned); I have turned VM off and set Energy Saver to "never;" I have run Norton and TTP, optimized and so on. I have even dragged out the dead chickens and waved 'em over the dang th…

Recently installed 5.5 on three machines.(Home Ethernet) Everything was fine for about a week but then one of the Mac's started to Dial-up (Remote Access) whenever FM5.5 was launched. Now the other two machines have started to do this. I have trashed Prefs(all three), reloaded(2) turned off ALL networking(3) but still get the dialup at launch. I have removed ALL FM Files from each machine. FM5.0 did NOT do this. it does NOT go anywhere once connection is establised with my ISP. :??

Help! Does anybody know why I can no longer open my files? I'm a Mac user but use my corporate-issue Dell to serve about 22 FM databases (and do nothing else that requires human interfacing!). About a week ago I started running into a problem where the first files to open would do so quickly, but then FM would report an error when it seemed to reach some limit. The error declares something like "the temporary file can not be created, the disk is full". The disk is only 2 of 6 Gb full. Checking the "About FM", it says that 63.5 of my 64 Mb of RAM are used, which strikes me as a problem. Here are some other details that might help: Windows 98 version 4.10 FM Pro …

I am running a collection of FMPro scripts and apple scripts to import a tab delimited text file twice a day. The first script runs and shuts down the database(to get past the record lock problem). Then the second copies the files from the server. The third then opens the files. The Problem: Sometimes the files that were updated show non printable characters. ( the square blocks ) And the strange part is the corrupt data is not contained within it's self. The fields that is linked to other files seem to be the problem. If I rerun all of the scripts (which deletes the files and puts new ones in its place) then everything is fixed.

I have a database that always opens with text somewhat garbled, some of it missing. When I click on the zoom box or hit F3 the database crashes. The weird thing is that immediately afterwards, it opens properly. This happens consistently. The same database opens on Mac without incident, so it seems to be a Windows problem (Win 98). Any clues?

Hi All, I've installed a FM pro server behind a firewall that can be accessed successfully by FM clients from private (non firewalled) locations, so I know the "server" firewall is allowing outside requests in. My problem involves client machines installed in commercial premises behind another firewall ("client" firewall). Do I need to convince the IT staff to open a port on the "client" firewall so the requests originating from client machines can get out to the FM pro server? Initial discussions with these guys have met with much trepidation, they are very concerned about possible security breaches. Any help with this will be greatly appreciated. Feel free to …

Help! I can get FMP 5.5 to startup at Login, but I don't seem to be able to automatically open up a database. Under Mac OS, you added an alias of the document to the startup file, and it appears that OS X is the same; however, I can't get my database to automatically start up. I added FMP to the startup menu and it works fine, but my file goes nowhere. It works perfectly well if I manually start it up. Any suggestions?

I need to find if files can be shared between Filemaker pro and MS Project. Filemaker currently has the Database info on it, but I need to start running schedules and projects using MS Project. Ihave had this hint below, but don't know much about the two Applications...can anybody help? TIP I RECEIVED. Should be - Does MS Project export tab delimited data? Cuz if it does then you just need to have Filemaker look at the file MS Project exports to. Maybe you have to write a little script and/or set up the correct relationship in Filemaker but it should be do-able. QUESTION I ASKED... Is it possible to link MS Project and Filemaker Pro. If I created a schedule in M…

Using FM4 / FM 5 on a G4/9.1 (German) I get a message "Filemaker kann die Festplatte nicht aktualisieren. Abbrechen/Weiter" (meaning: Filemaker can't refresh(?) the harddisk. Abort/Continue" If you press "Continue" it continues correctly but the problem is that it interrupts my scripts and also indexing new fields or whole databases. It happens almost every 300-500 records (my main database contains 41000 records so I have to press the enter-key really often...). Does anybody know the reaseon for that (does not happen on a Windows System, so it seems to be a MacOS error)

I have (chuckle) programmed a game with Filemaker, originally on the Mac. Part of the deal is that some Quicktime movies and sound fx are reside in global container fields which are then loaded into an 'action' container field with a script and played. This all works quite well. Now I wanted to put this on a Windows machine. I installed Quicktime for Windows and it didn't work. What is there to know about it? And another thing - the Quicktime movie and sound source files take about 2.5 Mb. The Filemaker file which holds them (and presumably adds some overhead to this) is less than 400 K. Where did all the bytes go? Is Filemaker also an award winning compression tool?

Hi guys - Need some help / suggestions. I'm trying to punch through a firewall to a Filemaker Server at a clients, who has a DSL modem, a static IP, and an internet gateway software to route internet internally on his network. According to Filemaker Article 104289, you assign Port 5003 to the server, and allow both UDP and TCP traffic to it. But according to Filemaker Article 106727, this is not possible since Filemaker server cannot utilize Network Address Translation or Proxy type addresses. The only real solution I can see is to put the server computer on its on own real world IP, not firewalled, which is a bit outrageous to my customer. Has anyone else run Filem…

I'm considering developing and distributing a FMP solution I currently use on the Mac platform. The majority of the intended market uses Windows machines and I would like to develope it using FMP so as not to have to reinvent too many wheels. However, primarily being a Mac user, I need to have a better feel for the long term 'robustness' of FMP for Windows. I guess I'm looking for an unbiased assessment of FMP's market status. Before I invest too much time I'm trying to come to terms with the possibility of a worst case scenario such as a succesfully distributed product (and the support implications of that) and the sudden loss of the underlying software engine. …

Some of my Windows users are receiving illegal operations errors when performing operations in files that are doing large calculations. Some of the errors include "Invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL" , "FILEMAKER PRO caused an exception 10H in module MSVCRT.DLL at 0177:7802cd03", and "FILEMAKER PRO caused an invalid page fault in module MFC42.DLL at 0177:5f4012a1". These problems have just began in the last 2-3 months, and no one has made any significant changes to their operating systems. Does anyone have any possible sollutions?
