I am trying to add data to a filtered portal The setup is as follows table1 is patients and key is patient id table2 is medlist and has many med entries linked to patient by patient id 1st layout is based on patient and has a portal showing all of the med entries for that patient 2nd layout is based on patients and has a filtered portal showing certain med entries that match a global field in table med entry. This is based on a second table occurence of table medlist. The relationship is between patient id and global field = med name eg: global field=aspirin and it will filter the portal to only show aspirin. I want to add a new portal entry…

Hi, By clicking a button on a portal row, I would like to goto a layout in a related table, the name of the layout is in a field on the same row as the button. ( in fact, the portal contains a list of form letters, so each row in the portal is suppose to open a different layout). How can I get FM to go to to the active row in that portal and take the name of the layout from the field. Without that active row information, of-course FM will goto the first record in the tablet, and take the name of the layout from the field. And the result is that it will always goto the same layout. Have anybody got any good ideas, Thanks.

Hi all I have very little experience in portal but i was wondering is it possible to have a portal to only enter information and not show pass information enter into it. Example: Information enter on 5/12/05 for number of X-ray films expose on a job. Same job different day 5/15/05, want to enter the information for number of x-ray films exposed that day but do not want to see the information from 5/12/05. Is this possible Thanks Lionel

Hello... For this purpose I'm using 2 tables. A master estmiate log and an Events Log. I'm currently using a portal to display a series of events related to an Estimate... The events are "Bid Due" "Walk Through", etc. and list the date and time of each. I want to be able to pull the "Bid Due" date and time only and show them on the main layout page of my Estimate Log. How would I calculate and/or script going into the portal, finding the field containing the entry "Bid Due" and then pulling the date and time to display in the Estimate Log Table? Thanks. Joe

The layout in question requires some editing and I only want the user to be able to edit the records that are visible and leaving a blank one on the bottom would allow them to enter something into it. Hello everybody ! I ran into problems with my solution again I have made a vehicle status system in which every unit has to report it's position by radio every 30 minutes. By clicking units symbol on screen a new timestamp and record is made to a log file. If the unit hasn't reported in 30 minutes the symbol turns red. There is about 20 units at the same time. The different units status is shown in one file on portals. Now the problem is that how to refresh the screen every minute so the over dued timestamps turn to red ? I would like to get the contents of a "child" portal to appear in a single field in the "parent" table. I am familiar with the method which uses the "get (valuelistitems)" for a value list made up of related values. Is this still the best way to do it, or has anyone discovered an alternative? Also, is there a way to get the nth (i.e. 2nd, 3rd, etc.) row in a "child" portal to appear in a field in the "parent" table? I have no solution for this one. Thank you! DSW

Hello- I have a database with each record being a Purchase order, and a Portal setup to find all the statuses of the line items within that PO from another database with every line open from every Open PO in our system. What I need to figure out is how to export the record so that it will list all of the statuses in that PO which the Portal displays. The ideal output would be PO # - Status 1 - Status 2- Status 3- Status 4, etc also is their a way to filter out repeated statuses in the portals so that it lists each status only once? thanks!

I'm trying to sort portal records using a custom sort order based on a value list. The value list is actually in the same file as the portal records. However, the value list does not sort in the custom order as defined by the value list, but rather alphabetically. The value list is rather long, but it worked in FM6 just fine. In a file called Journal, I have a 'Journal' table and data entry layout on which I have three text fields which I will call category, subcategory and subsubcategory. Is it possible to setup a portal to display the relating records so that the portal field will automatically expand or contract to how many records it displays? Or is there another type of field/solution i should use? Hopefully i explained this right

For some reason my portal scroll bar is not showing. I have selected show vertical scroll bar...and it is there because in browse mode, when I click approximately where it should be, the portal records do scroll. Also there is the plus sign in layout view. But why is the scroll bar not visible in any view?

So the old technique of using related repeating fields in a Find interface for performing an AND search on related records does not work in Filemaker 7! Anyone come up with a new work around? I suspect with the new features of 7 it may be an entirely different approach.

I am building my first fp7 database, a photocatalog with two tables, Image info and Artist Info. The two tables are related by the field Artist. I am trying to build a layout that shows the some fields in the Artist info with a portal to the Image info table that shows all the Images that were created by that particular artist. However, I keep getting the error message Field Missing, for the fields from the related image info table. I get this error whether I try to display a text, number, or container field in the portal. Forgivce me if this has been covered before. I have a situation where a table called invoices has a portal to sales line items. One of the fields in this portal row is governed by a validation calculation. The problem I have is when data is entered into this field (valid or not) unless I click away from the portal row, it does not come up with my custom validation failed message. Is there away round this as I would like it to show as soon as the tab or return key is pressed while in that field. thanks

i've been trying to solve it for some days and still no idea how to do it. i would like to copy all the records from portal-1 into the other one, portal-2, within one record. then i need to be able to adjust the records in portal-2, but keep the original ones in portal-1. has anyone idea how to do that? thanx in advance!

I want a dynamic portal that will filter according to the criteria set forth by the global gt_CurrentFilter... BUT, if nothing is selected in that filter, I want everything in the portal. I need quick help or a suggestion on what I should be looking at todo this specific task. I'm working out a simple many-to-many relationship and in a particular screen where I put an unique object into a specific group. There is a dropdown box that lists all the values for Group_name. When I hit ok, I would like to reference the group name against the related group_ID and use the ID to store the grouping, not the name. This way, if the name of the group changes, it doesn't ruin all my pairings. For this relationship I have 3 tables, one is an object table, one a group table and one a object_group table.

I find it interesting that in FM7 you can define a sort sequence when defining a relationship and then define another when use the relationship in a portal. I would like to take advantage of that latter feature and change the sort sequence in a portal somehow within a script. Otherwise I believe I would need to have a different layout for each sequence I would like to display the data in. I want the user to be able to toggle through different sequencing options of the portal with the click of a button. Is there a way to change the sort sequence of a portal from within a script (without user interaction other than the 'toggle' button)? TIA Tomp

Greetings, I have a solution for my photography studio. In it I have a portal that shows all of the sessions. Within each row there are check boxes to track its status 'in house'. Editting, at the lab, etc. Once the photos are picked up by the client, I would like for us to be able to click a 'hide' option within the portal that will simply drop it from the list... Is there any way NOT to show all of a related record set? That you could somehow have a field that would trigger it NOT to show up in the portal?

Need help with script for button that scrolls though portal records. The portal displays one record at a time and has an up and a down button. When the down button hits bottom, one more click brings you back to the first record. That was easy, it just recognizes the empty fields of the bottom record. What I want is for the UP button to work the opposite way - that is, if the first record is in view, a click on the UP button brings you to the bottom record. Thanks

I've decided to post a working file which eliminates scrolls. I dislike them. In addition, many times it's difficult to restrict a relationship sufficiently and, if I need to sort the relationship or portal, or if there are a lot of related records, portal re-draw, find and sort can slow it down - particularly when jumping from one main record to another. Simply restricting the length of the portal doesn't restrict FM's need to find, sort and calculate the related set for display (and Lord forbid I have unstored calcs in the portal). I'm currently trying to create a portal where I can view calendars for objects in a portal so that I can get it to scroll horizontally (infinitely preferably) to check the object status - i.e. in use. I've managed to generate a calendar for an object that shows 1 year + 4 weeks in a horizontal repeating field but cannot work how to get this into a horizontal scrollable portal. I am trying to make a warning note for a portal populated with registrant names for an event. The warning should show when the same participant is entered in the same event. The portal is in the event file, and links via a many to many join file to a registrant file. How can I set up a script so that a warning notice shows up whenever a registrant is duplicated for the same event? Registrants have unique IDs, and so do Events. Hi! Could someone point me in the right direction with this? I've brought it as close as possible and attached an example (pick one, .zip or .sit)... Two tables: Workers and Tasks. Workers (field initials) have multiple Tasks. Tasks have a status of A, B or C. I want a portal that displays all of a worker's records with a particular status. I have a portal that has records shown in order of "edition #." From 1/25 (1 of 25) to 25/25. It is set to sort by the #: 1 first through 25. Unfortunately, when it sorts - it puts everything with a "1" first so it looks like this: 1 10 12 13 14 15 .....and then goes to 2, 21 - so obviously it is sorting by the first # - how do i fix this? Hello world, I'm building a dvd/cd database and so far it works pretty well. I keep running into trouble when trying to get data (numerical) from the portal I've used. My portal contains disk: content, content type (movie, music etc.) and content size. I used a calculation to "sum" the content size to create a "disk size" field. That works really well, but I also wanted to sum up the size of all the disks. I used a summary field but that doesn't work straight away. I have to re-open the DB for it to re-sum all the disk sizes. Maybe theres a better way to do this?? I'm also trying to restrict data entry within the portal. I used a validation on the co…

I have a layout with one portal. When a button is clicked to add a row to the portal, a duplicate portal shows up on my layout that is above and to the left. This ghost portal does not appear anywhere in layout mode. I have gone as far as duplicating the original layout and deleting all of the fields as well as the portal. I then go back to the original layout and select the fields one by one and put them back into the copy. I recreated the portal because I had a feeling that the problem was with it. HI everybody. Forgive me if this is too obvious for words but I just cannot get it. I want to show all the records in a table so I have a portal based on a self relate to a constant. I want the user to be able to add records as well as edit the others. I have all this working IF records exist within the table. If there are no records I get a message asking me to create a new one (I expected to be able to just add records through the portal - cos I can if there are already records there). I am new to the FM7 World and am having some difficulty with a portal setup. I have created a portal based on Owner information. But the way it is setup I cannot add another owner without going to the owner layout and duplicating the record and changing the owner name. Also one of the standard templates that came with FM7 is the People Management template. On this template once information is entered into the "issues" or "goals" portal another field is opened automatically. I was wondering how that happened. Thanks.

The last table manages the many-to-many relationship for donors and mailings, and includes fields for the DonorID and the MailingID. On a layout based on DONORS, I'm looking at a portal of MAILINGSRECEIVED and see the list of all mailings that have been sent to that donor. I can add records to this portal. This all works just fine - so far, so good. My question is whether I can use a script to add records to this MAILINGSRECEIVED table, one each for a group of donors. I have a portal in which I display an image. I've protected the image to keep the user out of the field, but when the user clicks on the field, the colors in the image invert. This has startled more than one user, but I'm at a loss as to how to prevent it. This only happens when the graphic is in a portal. In layouts where the image doesn't need to be in a portal, the behavior is as expected. This, to me, is a FileMaker shortcoming. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get around this? Thanks, Rick

I have a button that the user can click to add a new line to a portal. The portal is used for entering comments related to a specific store. The fields are DATE, STAFF NAME and COMMENT. The Date field is set up as a regular date field - not auto-enter. The Staff Name field is a value list from another file. and the Comment field is a text field. When the button is clicked and a new line the cursor takes the user to the date field in the last record. But when they tab out of the date field to the Staff Name, the cursor jumps way back up the first record and opens up the value list/pull down. I have a Patient table and a Visit table. In the patient table, there is a portal to display this patient's visits. So, if a patient has 10 visits, the portal of this patient will show all 10 records. How can I make this portal only show the visits whose status equals "failed", for example ?? Thanks very much. I'm attempting to sum a text value for a specific field in each record appearing in a portal. The aggregate function "SUM" works wonderfully for numeric values but no luck for text. I can add values from two text fields by using the concatenate operator "&". Doing so from record to record is not clear to me. Is there a way to add values from a previous record to the present record to form a running total (or list as I wish to do). My ultimate goal is to this within a portal. I have a portal populated with potentially thousands of rows, and I want to print it out for the user. I tried forming a new layout (just for printing) consisting of a very large body part, cramming as many rows in as possible - but it's much too limited, and I can't take advantage of "sliding". I'd like to grey out all but the first portal row.. so that the most recently created record is the active portal record, and the rest are considered to be inactive. I attempted this by creating a container field that would show a grey graphic if the portal ID of that portal record was anything other than 1. So... I have created database for 2nd mortgages and have 3 main tables: Borrowers Investors Mortgages I have managed to get working to point of calculating the mortgage payments, etc. (amortization schedule) which creates "on the fly" up to 300 new records (via scripting) for each borrower. This script relies on showing all records and then deleting them before it creates a new amortization schedule. I have invoices that sometimes need to be duplicated and adjusted. I have all of the records related by an invoice number. Each invoice typically has two related records. I have an Idea of how it should work but this is a little above my scripting knowledge. Thanks for any help!

I have a Patient and a Visit table. Each Patient has 0-n Visits, and the two tables are linked thought Patient_ID. In the Patient table, there is a portal to display the Visit Information. However, in the Patient table, when I change the Patient_ID, the Paitent_ID in the Visit table is NOT updated automatically, therefore, this updated patient doesn't have visits any more while it had visits before the change. Do i need to go to the visit table to manually update the Patient_ID there too??? Please help. Jie

Copying Portal Rows and adding new portal records without having to add it to the bottom row of a load of line items. This is only a little discovery but it's made layout formatting and copying of portal information a breeze for me. I have three tables, *Students, *Classes, and *Families. *Students and *Classes have related fields (~First Name, ~Last Name, ~Class Name). I need to have two+ layouts set up with portals on both layouts that contain this information. Hi everyone. I am not new to using Filemaker, but I am new to working with the layout of a database. So forgive me if my terminology is a bit off... I have a template that I have been using and have been making some modifications to it to fit my needs..I have adjusted the fields in a portal, but now when I browse the records in list view all the lines are double spaced, and I want to get them back to being single spaced. I am curious as to the most efficient way to move data from one portal to another. I have a portal that displays drug name, dosage and instructions. I move the information from this portal to a patients drug list in another portal by first putting the text into a global field using: SetField [ x;y ] where x is the global field and y the portal data GoToField [ z ] where z is in the other portal GoToPortalRow [ last ] SetField [ z ; x ] Is there a better way? I have a customer layout showing all of my customer and a portal on that layout from the orders table, showing all the orders placed by a customer. Some customers have many order, so is it possible to do a search function that would find a certain criteria within the portal information? For example, do a search for all order by that customer on a certain date(date is a field already in the portal)?

I am having trouble with "portal creep". When I display a large number of entries in a portal window and scroll down by clicking in the elevator bar, after about 10 windows worth, I notice that the top entry is only half displayed. The more I scroll down, the more the rows have "crept" up in the window. I've tried resizing the portal row size and the portal area, and FileMaker insists it knows what it's doing. Example, if I have eleven rows in the portal area and each row is 20 pixels, Filemaker won't let me set the area size to 220 - it insists on 221. This may be what explains the creep - but it actually seems like I'm creeping by a fraction of a pixel with each click.…

I'm trying to develop a task manager program and I'm really stuck at this next part. What I have is a punch list of activities that need to occur. Each time something needs to be added to the list a new record is created. The main parts of this record include a TASK description, MEMO field and START-STOP times. I have just created a database for the school I teach at which displays, among other things, a student's misdemeanours through a portal. Each portal row has a preview/print button to either preview and/or print the contents of that portal row in bigger detail in a separate layout. Clicking this button on some of the portal rows correctly displays the field contents of that row in the new layout while clicking the button on other portal rows causes FM to display the first record of the database and then exit from FM7 when a Continue button is pressed (which pops up when the portal row's button is clicked). Is there a way to make portal borders with vertical scroll bars more attractive? So far that only method I've come up with is to make the portal's borders invisible, and position little triangles (I used the Webdings font, in a text label) over the now-invisible scroll buttons. But for some reason, those triangles always disappear in one particular portal - even though I used the Format Painter to copy that portal's appearance from another's. Thank you for any suggestions.

I'm building an office appoinment scheduler. If a slot (a field) is open (empty) I want the background green and if closed I want the background red. I have the container calculation field which holds the color behind the time slot field. The color changes fine based on if the field is empty or not. However, when any field is clicked into, the color changes to white. This only happens when the fields are in a portal. Any way to remedy this? Thanks, Toffler

Here is the setup: I am looking at a job sheet that has a portal that lists associated rounds. I have a button in the first row of the portal (which duplicates with each row) that directs you to the related record in rounds. In my old system (Filemaker 5), it would take you directly to the round from which you clicked on and all the other related records would be present. Now in Filemaker 7, it takes you to the first record no matter where you click on the portal. The relationships are the same from new to old. What's the deal?

This is not really necessary, but I'd like to know if it can be done.... Can a portal's relationship (ie: what table it's related to) be changed dynamically - by a value list for instance. I have a multi-table db and am using the portals to display info only (data entry is via other layouts) from various tables. This sounds really wacky, but I saw this and I'm dying to figure out how it is done. On the CCGant FM7 project they have a calculation field that you can click on, and it shows a regular drop down (though the drop down is not listed on the field format except as an edit). Then once the field is entered, it updates the calculation, but only shows the ID field on the drop down! The rest of the time it's just the calculation. I know plenty of ways to do this with two fields and clear buttons and all that. How do you do this with just the calculation field in the portal? Can anyone tell me? It's worth a dinner out somewhere if I get paid for my work. -Alex

Hi, I'm having a problem with getting all the linked records I should see in a Portal between 2 tables in the same file. The Match field is of the form MA-0107.00 and is indexed in both files. I have sorted each table independently by this field to ensure that there are not extaneous spaces or formatting would preclude a match, and the value does exist in both files. The "master file" may have several instances of the value, while the "lookup" file has only one entry per value. I get about 80% hits, so not sure what is happening. I'm trying to use a portal to show a client's treatment sessions. I'd like to add multiple session details through the portal, but each session should have a unique ID. Although I can enter one session's details, then tab to the next etc, the auto-entering doesn't increment so ~I end up with several portal records with the same id. Obviously this is invalid... I assume this should be really simple but I'm a bit stuck - any help greatly appreciated. Thanks Gerard

Is there anyway to have related data many-to-one data appear in a calculated repeating field instead of a portal? (the reason is I want to use the get(repeating field; repetitionnumber) function and as far as I can tell it won't work with portal information. Ideas on either of these appreciated!!

I have an employee database. Each employee is either "active" or "inactive" which is defined by a field called "status". In my layout I have a column down the left side the I'm calling employee list. In that column is a portal that lists all the employee names. Is there a way to fine tune the portal so that it can display all employee, active only, or inactive only? I am envisioning 3 tabs adjacent the column like All, Active, and Inactive. When clicked the portal is limited to display only that chose. Somewhere I saw a discussion of how to handle multiple portals on the same layout, but now that I need the information I cannot find it. I have defined two portals .. on the same table ... one displays rows 1 and 2 and the other displays rows 3 through 12. So far so good ... the portals display the data correctly. However, I have a script that validates the data - which works fine on the first portal, but ignores the rows in the second portal. How do I specify that I want to access rows in the second portal? And how are they numbered? would the first row in the second portal have row number 1 or row number 3. Or is this mission impossible? Patricia

I have a list of values in a portal. What I am trying to achieve is that if a certain value appears in the portal, this can be used to trigger a relationship. ie. A portal shows all the possible diagnoses a patient has. If one of these diagnoses is "rectal cancer", I wish to be able to recognise this in a calculation - something like Case(portal contains "rectal cancer", 1, ""). The problem I have is that this only works if the diagnosis "rectal cancer" is the first related value in the portal (as I understand it FileMaker only evaluates the first related record). I made a layout with the name of the city and a portal of every person who has this city in their record (The link between the tables is the name of the city, with a unique field in the "List" because I only want one list per city). Am i mssing something that is really simple... I have a table that has a couple of related tables hanging off of it. There are times when a user wishes to duplicate the main table AND its related records. I am currently using a script that duplicates the main record, remembers the new records match field and then does a 'goto related records only' step and then loops through each of the related records to duplicate them and give them the new match field! It's painful, clumsy and slow! ANy ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I have two tables, a customer table and a customer notes table. The customer notes table has a foreign key that is a customer id to relate the tables. I have a field in the customer notes table that determines the type of note. I have 4 different types. I have a portal set up on the customer layout that shows the notes. very strange indeed. all the fields in my portal are displaying correctly except for one which displays correctly for some records and for others just shows a question mark. when i click on that field to edit it, it shows what should be there (a number) but when i exit editing the field, it reverts to a question mark again. any idea what's happnin?
