    Hopefully someone can set me straight on this. I've got a checkbox set for a field, using a value list. I want to be able to predefine which items are checked off, based on other info from the record (i.e. Province) In order to do this, do I need to create seperate fields for every check box item rather then using a value list? Example... Poster types. Value List: Poster 1 Poster 2 Poster 3 Poster 4 etc... If the Province is BC... I want Poster 1 and poster 4 to be checked off. Thanks, Scott

    Has anyone tried creating a tooltip that shows data from the first, previous, next, and last found records? In other words on the button navigation panel, have the customer's name from the first record shown as a toolbar, on the 'first' button, customer's name from the previous record shown as a toolbar on the 'prev' button... etc etc.

    I created a 40 page user guide for my solution using the "Grab" screenshot feature new to OSX.(it creates .tiff files)the thing looks beautiful..until I open with a PC. Each of the 200 or so graphics displays, instead, "Quick Time and TIFF(LZW) decompressor are needed to see this picture" Please tell me I don't have to go in and convert all those gfx files to jpegs...there must be another way!     OK so I have a Contracts table related to a Company table by a CompanyID and the Company table is then related to a Contacts table by the CompanyID. I have a layout based on the Contracts table where I can enter a CompanyID from a value list and then have only the Contacts associated with that Company show up on the ContactID value list. However, it only seems to be working with values already existing in the list. I want to be able to include a button on the layout so that if the user finds the Company (or Contact) they are looking for isn't already included, they can click the button and go to a layout to add the contact, then return to the Contract layout and …

  7. I must be losing it! I know this is so simple that I am embaressed but I am mind dead about this. I have a portal that has worked perfectly up to now. It was originally a const1 type self join. The portal is now using a single key matched to a multi-value selector list of values delimited by a carriage return (so I can filter portal entries by a first letter in a name etc.). All the records show proper match field contents. The current problem is caused when I create a new record on a layout dedicated to the original table instance.     i have a portal on a layout to display servers and their tipout amounts for a restaurant. Now, when I enter the servers into the portal, are they not automatically related? because the second I hit enter, there are no more related records showing. but when i go to the layout that shows all the server records regardless of relation, they exist, and the correct variabkes match up. i will upload the file here to show what i'm taking about. the ones i have in so far that aren't working are under the banquets tab, and then under banquet 1 on the lunch shift of 9/18/2005, 9/23, and the dinner of 9/23. bizarre! thanks! amber tip_share_Copy.zip

  9. Hi, The new new menu sets are nice, but I can't really use them unless I can specify different default menu sets for different user groups. For example, as a developer I need full access, but sales reps would get a limited access menu. Attempts to script menu sets are cumbersome because they return to the default as soon as you switch layouts. Has anyone found a better way? Thanks, Andrew

    Can anyone explain a fundamental method to using portals. For example in using two tables on a many-to many relationship one needs to create join table and then have the join table be the basic portal, though the fields can come from the other tables. I can't get my head around why this should be the case. I'm a novice and its not clear when and why you should use particular tables over others when using portals. Even though there are clear relationships by using a different table occurence as a portal often brings a completely different set of results. Is there a clear method to this?

I can do it by putting that literal value into a global field and matching on that field, but direct from a literal would be tidier. I want to put different product options into value lists, from the same table but selected by an entry_type (option) field value. I could do this with a table per option type, but then loading the data would be a nightmare. David

    Greetings! We have a subcontract form that we use at the office. The info is entered in an entry screen, then when Print Subcontract is selected, it prints out the contract. This form is 8 pages in length, with it being huge text boxes with fields inserted where they need to be. Is there a cleaner,(different) way to do this that you all have an opinion on?     Hi all, I'm using the "Invisible Layout Objects" technique to hide some of my objects. It basaically use a portal and hides the objects based on a relationship. My issue is that this technique is not working in Find mode. It displays all the objects that are suppose to be hidden.     I've been messing about for the first time with the new Custom Menus. A great idea, but there's a few snags. The fundamental problem is the same as what we've been facing for years. That is the blanket nature of the menu access in a privilege set. Taking a basic idea of a custom menu: change the single New Record menu command into separate table-specific commands; "New Contact", "New Company", etc.. I attached these to scripts. If I set the user's menu privileges to "Editing only", then (of course) they could not use the "new" record commands that I'd created; because they weren't Edit commands.   25. OK, Panic over... I discovered that for some reason, while Fm accepted my wonky TO name yesterday, today it does not. I tried omitting all of my non-alphanumeric characters from the name and the merge fields worked again. I narrowed it down to a colon in the name...just a single colon, not a double colon, and I am NOT having this problem with other T/O's that STILL have the colon in the name. I'm going to pull them all out just to be sure. PHEW! ...and NO, FM gave no warning that I could find of this issue. As far as FM is concerned, the single colon is just fine. In fact, it's still fine just as long as you don't use merge fields as far as I can tell.

  28. I have a relationship/portal question. I am currently using three primary keys: Contact ID, Company ID, and Request ID. A Company can have many Contacts. A Contact can only belong to one Company. A Request can have one Company, and multiple Contacts. The catch here is that because Contacts switch Companies so much, the Request can have one Company, and Contacts from different Companies.     I am running 5.5. Is there a way to check for a particular value in a field. I am making a file which will be used for making Work Orders. I need to make it "User Friendly" because of the denseness of some of the users. Therefore, I am making a layout for each field that is required. I have a field called "Art Status" which has the options, "New," "Repeat," and "Change."     For some odd reason, I cannot see data when in Table or List View in one of my Tables. It can only be seen in Form view. Any ideas? You can see the scroll bar and see some activity is going on, but just can't see the data. I've adjusted the font size and still nothing is there...very weird.     I want to set a button up in my database that allows end users to return to the previous layout. For example, they may be viewing some information they have just searched for but want to quickly view another layout. I need to place a button on the second layout so that they can return (back button) to the previous layout. Much like the back button on a web page. I know that there is a built-in provision for printing in two columns with the text flowing from column 1 to column 2, but I need for the columns to be "balanced."     I have a runtime file using two values lists. Depending on which category value is chosen on one list then the other list displays a list of values available for that category. This works fine except I now notice in FM Advanced that the value list appears to drag, usually displaying what looks to be multiple copies of the 2nd value. Of course chosing it makes the copies disappear. I think this must be a screen refresh problem that has just crept into the new version. It certainly never happened in Developer 7. Any ideas how to fix this?

    What I'm wanting to do is have some kind of windows management(FM windows, not the OS). I'm building a solution that takes advantage of the multiple windows feature that started with FM7. I'm wanting to do things like - remember last size/position for each window for each user, run script upon window exit, resize window based on screen resolution/zoom, position a new window based off an existing window's position etc...     In my solution, I have an In-Out Board where staff names are listed. There about 5 fields on it. These names are from the Staff table and are viewed through a portal on a layout based on a Home table. This home table is basically information about the company and has one record. The problem I'm running into is that only one person can edit one of the staff records at a time, since it is a one to many relationship (Home to Staff). All others are locked out until the user either clicks out of the portal or goes to another screen. Is there a way to allow multiple users to edit different staff records in the portal at the same time? -- Thanks

    Thoughth this would easy but I can't seem to get it to work... I want to store the data a 0s 1s and display as No or Yes. Works great for data in place but I would like a Radio button that allows the user to use Yes No but place the number.     I'm putting together a db to create contracts in selling air-time (broadcasting). Each contract includes the air-time purchase (called "Flight"), the fee for the purchase, and calculations having to do with the breakdown of where the material is to be broadcast. I need a way to be able to list an identifier for each flight, and have relevant info (air-dates, number of broadcast sites, etc) about that flight be pulled from a related table. I have a relationship where ClientID shows me related records for all Order Numbers for that ClientID.     I am having difficulty getting a portal to allow me to create records, and also edit values. I have a people table, and I'm trying to associate children with their parents in a second table called people_parents. I created a second occurrence of people, and made my relationships from people to people_parents to people_for_parents. I then have a portal in a layout connected to people where I want someone to be able to create the parent record. I am able to make this work by pointing the portal at people_for_parents, and FileMaker automatically creates the join record in people_parents.     I am using the FM7 demo for Mac OS X and I've been trying to make a db with greek characters in the fields, values etc. Everything seems to be working fine for text input with the unicode greek keyboard and unicode fonts (eg Lucida Grande) except from the pop-up menus that take their values from a value list written in greek. When pressing the pop-up menu the values list displays only questionmarks " :?: ". Strangely the problem is only with pop-up menus and not with pop-up lists that show the value list perfectly.     For repeating a field... i know that if you use the Last(field) it will repeat something. But is there a function that will clear a field if nothing is in it? So say on one layout you don't enter something and on another layout that keeps a history of that field, that it doesn't even show up on the layout because it is empty...?     Im confused on layouts with summary sections. Lets say I have a database with company and contacts tables. They are related through a companyid match key. So when I print a summary report where the layout is for the customer table, summary subsection shows company::CompanyName, the field in the subsummary is company::CompanyName as well, and in the body I have the related fields for contact::First contact::Last.   60. Is this possible? I have a database of books and articles. I want to take multiple, separate notes for each, so I have created and set up a related DB (Notes SB). I can add notes in the main DB, and I can open a note from the main DB and show the full related record in the Notes DB. The portal in the Main DB layout shows only the first line of each Note, in a list form.     Forgive me for not knowing the exact name of the part of filemaker on the left side of the form that shows the modes and record numbers, but is there anyway I can make a layout that does not show this? I'm making a reports menu which will basically be a 400 X 400 pixel window with a list of reports. It will open on top of the main form. It's soul purpose is to select a report, so there will be no records in it, thus no need to display record numbers or browse, preview and form views. Thanks in advance. Hopefully this makes sense.

    I have a rellationship to show a field in a value list from only some of all records in a table. If I tell the valuelist to show all values (7400) it goes fast, if I show the values from a limited rellationship then it goes dead slow, slow like we can go and take a coffe break wile we wait, and thats is just 3800 values!     Hello all, I have two fields in a portal (month & year)that are defined as a pop up list. The pop up list is defined with value lists, month(jan,feb,march,etc)and year (2005,2006,2007 etc). During data entry when you select the year filemaker puts this year in all of the portal rows below, but when you select the month from the list it only adds the value to that field. I need the month to do the same thing, but I can't figure out how the year is able to do this when both fields are configured exactly the same.     I have a portal (working perfectly thanks to mr_vodka) which filters and displays records based on their status (active, completed, canceled)-using global data. Can I define it through an additional value list "class" being (maintainence, electrical, plumbing, painting or all) The majority of the time it would be set to a default of 'all' but occasionally my boss would like to see if any one area is lagging. As you can see I tried to just duplicate g.activestatkay2 with g.activestatkey3 but ran into the problem of the portal only being able to be referenced to one table at a time? Thanks for your help

    Greetings, I would like to be able to have my value list sort by the most popular items. I have a solution for my photography studio, and as we make new orders for clients, it is a pain to sift through all of the products for every single line item. I do currently have it set up so that within the product area, I can see within each individual product which invoices have had that particular item on it. I am wondering if there is someway to 'count' these occasions. So basically any given product would have a number cooresponding to it that is based on total sales. And then to somehow have my value list 'sort' based on this number?

    I am trying to create a script that overlays a checked item in a field called Gap (Yes/No) if true then it checks another field called GapFee which contains a check box of 40% or 50%. If 40% then it goes to a calculated field that is based on a distance travelled. It would take the distance traveled (i.e. 20 miles and then plug it into the calculation (DistanceActual - 15) / 5) * 2 + 5). This formula is either multiplied by 40%. The result of this calculation is the fee a customer pays, which is displayed in another field FeeActual. If the GapFee was checked as 50% then it would loop back to the formula and multiply it by 50% :

    Here's a brain teaser that kept me awake all night yesterday: In my example, I have a simple order system, where you select your items by selecting the item number from a pulldown menu. Most items are for any customer, but some can be made expecially for one customer and are NOT availlable for other customers than the one it was made for. The pulldown menu now shows all the items in the items table. But... I do NOT want to show the items that have a customer-restriction in that list.     My solution is designed for Windows. I was assured we would not be using Macs on it. Of course, I didn't totally believe it but it made my job simpler. We use script-fired popup menus which works wonderfully. We now have a new Sales Rep working remotely. He will be signing in to GoToMyPC and opening a licensed copy on a system only he will use. He will be clicking the 'Opener' FM file on the desktop. Two questions please: 1) Is there a problem opening FileMaker this way?     When I first started playing with Custom Menus, I found that Filemaker added an 'Exit Ctrl-Q' to the first menu and added 'Tools' to the end of the menu line (which couldn't be removed). I had been using Dacons Menu Control for the last 3 years, but its latest version won't run under v8, and Dacons can't give me a time frame for a version that will.     I'm running into a problem in a certain portal in my solution: When I try to create a new record by entering data, the record will not commit merely by leaving a field. Say, I have portal fields f1, f2 and f3: I click on f1, and enter "foo". I click on f2, and "foo" vanishes! I continue typing "bar" into f2. If we are sending 100 shirts, but can only fix 60 in every carton. how can i make it so that all i have to put is the Qty per carton, and the Qty that im shipping and the item number and have the program do the math.     I use a print-layout with a lot of fields (container with most of the time word-content) and I use the sliding possibility as "sliding up based on all above" + "also reduce the enclosing part". However, if this sliding happens, fields that are big are divided by the page break. I don't want this, because many times I have tables in some fields or pictures and breaking it in two over two pages doesn't look nice for a print-out. How can I use the sliding function without having the page break problem?

I want to be able to view a list of songs sung in the past by 3 groupings. 1. Songs sung the least 2. Songs sung regularly 3.   95. This is strange... It only happens when I am using the FileMaker 7 server version, connected to a remote host--not locally. When I click on a field that is set to display a pop-up menu with values from a value list, it works fine when all records are displayed, but if I perform a Find to limit the number of found records and do the same, it turns the cursor into an hour glass and I have to delete the FileMaker process. This happens on more than one pop-up with other value lists, so I don't think it's a problem with the lists. Ever heard of this before?

    Yesterday, I started experimenting with custom menus. I created a menu that I wanted everyone but me to use and set it as the default menu for the file. I then set the open script to set the [standard filemaker menus] as the menu set if anyone with full access logs in. That works just fine, and I get the regular menus. The problem is that as soon as I navigate or run a scipt, the menu set reverts to the default menu set. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

    Hello, could someone help me with a solution for this. I have a portal which shows various Films a client has purchased, the relation is based on the word "sold" in an "Actions" field so I have an "if" function to filter this, which works fine. Now for various reasons a Film may have the word "Sold" in the "Actions" Field more than once, so I end up having the same Film in the portal more than once. I need to create a calculation field in the Orders table that stores the price of the Most recently added product in the list. I also need a calculation field that stores the first products price.
