This may be basic, but I can't figure it out. The browser/layout page size defaults to 21cm wide in accord with my printer settings (A4 size), which is about 600 px. I want to set it up for typical screen use which means 800 px would be reasonable. I don't understand why I can't just grab the edge of the page in layout and drag it to the size I want. Is that too much too ask? It would seem so, as the only way i can find to do this is to change the print setup to landscape format instead of portrait. This is an unsatisfactory workaround, as it relies on the printer to set the screen size. Is there a better, simple way to set screen display size…

Is there any way to get around the limitation on the number of rows in a portal? I have a portal that lists a number of events for a fund-raising program for a non-profit, and they think they eventually may have many events. Do I need to artificially limit the number of events (only show the last 25 or so), or is there some way to dynamically expand the size of the portal? I think they wouldn't mind it being essentially infinitely long if they could scroll through it all. Thanks.

Hi Guys I've published a database on a website and on a 'custom seach page' I have a checkbox field with about 20 different value list options but am having huge probelms changing the search from an 'AND' search to an 'OR' search. If for example my value list ranges from A through M, I want the user to be able to search for records containing *any* of A, F or K not necessarily all of them. All I can seem to do is when selecting value list options A, F and K it will only return a record containing ALL options and not just one or more of them. HELP PLEASE!!!!!

... In a portal, when the user just clicks on a row (not into a field), the whole portal row turns black/negative. I've been in the midle of training users before, and they just get horrified when they do this - it's funny to see how quickly they click out of it. I use LOTS of portals and don't want to do some cheesey work around where I have to cover each portal with an invisible button that scripts GoTo Filed[]. This works, but it's a pain to resize and move with every littel adjustment. So, has anyone else found a setting or trick around this?

Hi - schoolboy stuff this for you brainiacs but I'm new to this, especially scripting and calculations! I need to make a value list that automatically determines the week ending dates for the year. Currently you just 'edit...' the list and input it manually, but I want FM to calculate it so I dont have to worry about getting it wrong! How on this earth do I do that? i.e. 28-05-04 04-06-04 11-06-04 etc If you can help it would be appreciated, I'm not built for FM, give me audio or design any day!

Hello. I am new to this forum, and I have a question about FMPRO 6. Currently, I have repeating fields setup where I populate all of my data. However, sometimes not all the fields will be used. I want to make a layout where it will check the value of a checkbox field. If the box is unchecked I want the data across that row to show up on my report. If the box is checked I don't want the data to show up. Also, sometimes I will have all 10 rows populated, but some of those fields will not need to show up. Thus, I don't need to have all 10 of the rows in my layout taking up space (prepping for the worst possible case). I need it to be dynamic, and depending on how many …

I am trying to convert several dbs from FM6 to FM7 and have got stuck on a value list problem. In the db a value list is obtained from a related field with multiple (up to 4) repetitions. In FM6 this works just fine and the value list returned includes all of the data in the related field, incl that in repetitions of the related field. In FM7 however the list returned contains ONLY the values in the first repetition of the related field and those values in the 2nd 3rd and 4th repetitions of the related field are not included in the value list. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? any help much appreciated jw

Has anyone had any success with writting a script (or maybe thee's a built-in function I'm not aware of) to get FM7 Pro to open everytime on a specific layout, irregardless of the layout it was closed on. I have a form that prints out in a letter format. The data is a sum field of 15 fields and compiles all the date from those 15 fields. I want to have a value list that is based off of a calc field sort uniquely, but it keeps alpha sorting. The value list is a pop list that uses a unique internal relationship and is sorted by the calc field. When I place the field in a layout, it shows correctly. When I enter the field with the value list, it sorts alphabetically. Any ideas?

Hi, I'm new to this post, and only familiar with filemaker and had a strange question. I'm currently maintaining a database that allows a variety of different users to input data. One of these users at some point inputted data into alot of records by cutting and pasting from another document. The consequence, the text in certain textboxes is not the same font as the rest of the text in the layout, and the rest of the records. These records are few and far between, so I'd prefer not to change them back by hand. So, better explained: The textbox on the layout is formatted for Arial Size 11. I have a large text value list that I am unable to add using the "Use Custom Values" option. The maximum character count indicated in the error msg is 30000. How can I define the value list with such a large number of values? Do I use "Use values from another file"? I have tried to specify a text document containing the values with this option but am not allowed to select the file. Thanks

I'd like to set up three layouts to print as letters, to be sent out when a payment hasn't been received. However, I'd like to give end-users the opportunity to rephrase the letters if they'd like, rather than stick with the default I provide. So, some kind of setup screen, where you fill in a global field that contains the message body. I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome by posting so many questions, but here's yet another one... I'm designing a participant tracking database for a study I'm running. I have a self-joined file with a portal on one of the layouts. I want to see only one record of the 'parent' with all related records in the portal. For example, if the the portal is for addresses in a particular state, I want only one screen for that state and all the matching records to be in the portal. Hi all Have a solution where i use the menu magic techinque to display and hide a menu. I added a delete record button to the portal and wrote attached a script to delete the record the user wants. The script works until you get to the delete record request. Nothing happen. I even attach the button to another script that call the delete record script. This works until it comes to the delete record request step and then nothing happens. Hey everybody! Hope everything's funky with you. I've got a question, hopefully somebody's done this before. Here goes: To save paper, is it possible to take 2 separate list reports and put them on a single layout, one in the upper half and the other below? Both list reports, done on separate layouts, change day by day, but consist of ten lines each at the most, so more than half of the page remains empty. I'd like to kill two birds with one stone, if you know what I mean. Something like this: (Header) (Body) ------------- (Separation) (Header) (Body) (Footer) I sure hope it can be done. hey, when I try to paste an image from photoshop into a container field I get the following error: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Buffer Overrun Detected! etc. ... It forces FM to shutdown. It even does this right after a reboot, and with a very small image. If I cut from photoshop, close the progam, and try it, it works. I've had some similar problems with FM6 where I will occasionally get a message that the program is busy, and I'm given an option to retry or switch programs. (Sorry I can't be a little more specific -- I just can't get the error to replicate at the moment.) I have to close photoshop to be able to continue. But crashes …

I have 2 files that contain sales information for our customers for 2003 and 2004. In each file i have created a layout with summary fields that sort the sales so that we can see how much in sales each customer has purchased per manufacturer. I would like to compare the summary information in each file (comparing 2003 to 2004), but am not sure where to start. Is this possible?

I have a database with 3 text fields: area, goal, objective. Area is a value list, and there are about 10 choices. Goal is often repeated exactly on several records. Objective will be unique to each record. I'm trying to set up a way so that "area" is selected, the corresponding goals will show in a portal. I've got it working, but because a goal can be repeated several times with a different objective, I get duplicates showing in the portal. Is there a way so that only one instance of the goal is visible in the portal? I've tried creating value lists based on goal, but the list is really too long to scroll through.

I have at the moment 3 files (not combined them yet). Invoices, Projects and Numbers In the invoice file I have a value list that builds the active projects but rather than coming direct from the projects i have a script that finds the active projects exports to the numbers file where the value list gives all the records in the numbers files. Whenever I design a db that requires relationships of the model sales/client where sales and client info are in separate tables I run into a user-interface problem. Which is the most efficient way to set it up so that the db user can easily access potentially 10,000 clients to enter sales info? That is, when a sale is entered into the sales db the db user must either create a new client or select from a list of current clients. From a pure db design perspective unique client ids work best but then each db user must know the id for every client. Telephone numbers work but are not stable and a single client can have multiple telephone numbers. A find function can work but …

I have a list of people, and a salutation field that allows you to choose how an envelope should be addressed. Choices should be Mark and Anne, Mr and Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Mark Smith, etc. I have this by having a field Salutation which is a value list based on a calculation field (Salutation Calc). If I display Salutation Calc, everything is perfect, but when I display Salutation, it has Mark and Anne, James and Suzanne, Mr and Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Johnson, etc, because it is indexing the calculation from every person's record. Hi! I'm trying to figure out how I can shrink a layout to fit on one page. When I go to Print Properties and reduce (fit to page or custom), the records get smaller but no more of any individual record fits on a page (and no more records fit on a page). Does anyone know how to shrink a too-big layout to fit on Letter Portrait?

Anybody have advice on how to easily manage redundant elements on multiple layouts? I'm talking about things like navigation buttons, default fields, etc. I have some fairly far reaching databases with a couple dozen related tables. If I want to adjust a redundant element on two dozen layouts, that's a chunk of time and a lot of repetitive work. Man, I'm achin' for a framed approach to FileMaker layouts like HTML can provide but that isn't an option (at least yet). So, anyone have a soap box they want to get up on and jabber for a while?

As the image below shows I have two databases: classes and packages. A package contains all the classes in the portal list. I need to flatten the file for a website, so I need one field in the packages db (selected in the image) that lists all the classes that come from the portal. Any suggestions on how to change a specific graphic based on a field condition. Here's what we're trying to do: I am creating a project management database which will catagorize projects into various "stages". We have a number of unique graphics which represent the various stages of the project. I have a field defined as; Portal Row Number Calc Global, from Report_Categories, = Get(Portal Row Number). The field is displayed on the Report_Categories Layout along with a portal to a realted table. The value of Portal Row Number remains at zero when I click into any of the portal rows. In my Master List, there are various records that are "leaders". I have a "leader" layout that provides additional info on leaders, but that is only relevant for those records that are "leaders". How can I make this layout available ONLY to those records that are "leaders". I want to be able to browse through this layout and see only "leader" records. I know I can do a find, but that filters records for both my "leader" layout and my "master list" layout. I also considered making the leader layout unavailable in the menu, and having a go-to button available on ONLY those records that are leaders. Is this possible? I am building a dbase for my school and would like to have a statistics layout that reflects some data such as; how many male/female students (gender field is a value list); what ethnicity (again, value list ranging from 1-5); how many kids have IEP's; and so on. Ok, so I'm completly new to all databases and so far it seems Like FM is the best one i have found. However, I cannot figurre out some of my own problems. So here is the problem: I am trying to create a presenatble report for timesheet info. THat is this information is taken off of timesheets. So the main thing i am trying to do is add up hours. However, I have found no way to keep a running record of the hours so that it adds up all the entries. Canadians as well as those of the "British Empire" do things a little differently when it comes to postal codes. Our system uses 7 characters { Letter # Letter space # letter #} i.e. B2S 1L7. Having worked with MS Access I would simply format the input mask as "L>L >L>". As a result the data that I would enter would be displayed as shown in the example, even though the key strokes were small letters. Similarly when entering phone numbers with area code I would format the input mask as !(999") "000-0000;0;_ Are there similar formating structures in FM? space

I have a FM7 database with 4 tables: AGENCIES, BRANDS, CAMPAIGNS and CODES. The relationships are the following: AGENCIES can have multiple BRANDS. BRANDS can have multiple CAMPAIGNS. CAMPAIGNS can have multiple CODES. I have a single layout named Agency and it has 3 portals: Brands, Campaigns and Codes laid out vertically. How can I synchronize/filter these three portals based on the portal and portal row I click on? Anyone know why, when I try to move a field or object on a layout by clicking and dragging, it duplicates itself and I end up moving the duplicate, leaving the original field irritatingly where it is? I've just returned to using Filemaker after a break of 2 years and I don't remember this happening before. I thought it only duplicated if you did Option-drag. Grateful for any advice.

Okay here how it is I have a list of records which belong to a group Each record has a group field which is a drop down value list So you can do a search for a group via this value list great! however when making a new group what I want to do is to 1. Goto the list of records that belong to new group 2. Custom Dialog - asking what the group name should be 3. This is then added to all the Group fields (not taking out any groups that have already been added - i.e keep multi-select) What is the best approach for this? I can't add to a value list unless it is linked to a field can i? Any help would be great? Thanks

Is there any way to use different value lists for the same field (on the same layout) under different circumstances? I need to pull up a pop-up list of Contact ID's for correspondence. If the correspondence is outgoing, the From ID value list should be populated entirely by employees (gathered from a related table). If the correspondence is incoming, it should be populated by everyone else (gathered from the same related table as the employees). When I try to do it using "related values only" the short employee list pops up rather quickly. But the longer list of everyone else almost never pops up and sometimes causes FM to freeze. I am not sure which script definition I have to use if I make the following script: I have a pop-up menu and several items, if I click on "Different" there musr appear a new field next to my pop-up menu where I can add i manually. I know I can also choose for the option "Other" for the preferences of a pop-up menu, but this way will add it to the pop-up menu. Which I dont want. I have the following: Field- Regions Field- Stores Each region has different 'stores' associated with it. Ok, so here is my problem. I have a IWP accessed database, a username is needed to enter the DB and make a new error report (its for a company that need to report errors). When the create a new report (read:record), I want the script to go and find the AccountName in another table, then bring the phone number and other details to the current record. I have a multi-user database that has been used by my company for several years. i did not create it however i have modified it several times. we use it to print all different types of labels. Lately a curious thing has been occuring. While i am one of the only people to have the admin password (and the only one to ever use it) the font has been mysteriously changing on all the layouts. We all use macs here and it is a little frustrating because I have to change it back on about 50 different fields because our labels have to match our company profile using a similar font (Helvetica Bold), in bold style, size 14 and the font always gets reset to plain, size 12, Gill Sans. …

I have a situation where I need to print a lunch menu. Each item has a description of varying length, so I need to 'slide' additional descriptions up so there's not big gaps in the list. Sliding doesn't seem to work with portal contents. If I make the text box (and first row of the portal) large, the size doesn't decrease for shorter descriptions. I thought maybe I could use "<<fieldname>>" on the page and slide them which does work, but I don't know how to set this to show fields from multiple records... e.g. <<fieldname_record1>>, <<fieldname_record2>>.... Hello again, I wonder if it is possible to have something like recursive portals in FMP 7. I will try to explain what I have in mind. Going back to my patients/episodes of care/visits model for a medical practice. Lets say we have a table called patients with all the patients details. Each patient can have several different episodes of care ("episodes" table) and for each episode of care each patient could be seen one or more times ("visits" table"). Hi Guys and Girls, Hope you can help me out and stop me looking like . I'm printing out some envelopes. At the min, when it's printing a title and first name i get Mr(GAP)David(GAP)Smith because i've put a " " inbetween the fields in the layout - which is all very well and good. When the person doesn't have a title though, the (GAP) is still there, and so pushes the rest of the name out to the right by one space. So my question is, how do i get rid of this gap when there isn't a title, but yet retain it when there is? I was thinking of making a field (say "Gap") that checks whether there is anything in the title field, and if there is putting a space into it…

Hi, I have real estate forms I need to keep in original format. I would like to insert said form into a FM layout and then set fields onto the form so they show the database information in my data files. No luck trying to do this. My forms are in acrobat.pdf format now. Appreciate all thoughts and tips. If not able to do a form in FM can I somehow have a pdf document import data from FM?

Hi, I need to create a field where I can select multiple choices from a value list. I was using check boxes, but I am trying to limit the layout to one page. I need to either create a pop-up list that I can make multiple selections from or I need to create a check boxes list where I can hide the boxes selected. Is there way to do either of these things? Hello, I have 2 different databases. One that I use for official orders and the other for quotations. I was able to create a script to import the content of a quote to an actual order using serial numbers but when it comes to portal informations, I only get the first line of the quote portal into my order. I have a portal with title's & names. i have specified a sort order for the portal based on value list from another file. the sort it returns is alphabetical. when i change the sort order to ascending or descending the sort function works fine. when i select any sort order found in the "specify" box it does not seem to recognize the list and defaults to a alphabetical order. this has only occured since migrating to 7. it worked perfect in 5.5 any thoughts??

I'm trying to make it so invoice totals only appear on the last page of the invoice. I have a field, gLastPageNum, which keeps track of the total number of pages before printing. I tried putting a calculated container covering the footer with the calculation, If(Status(CurrentPageNumber) ? gLastPageNum, gWhiteContainer, "") Where gWhiteContainer is a container in which I pasted a solid white rectangle the size of the footer (which I created in FM). It's not working. Am I going about this the right way?

I created a large, light-gray box and placed it at the back of the body's layout underneath transparent fields merely for aesthetics . When I place a portal over this box none of the fields show any data. Fields outside the portal and over the box revea their data. I moved the field in the portal front-most and made sure that it was solid (filled, I used "white" in my scenario) as well as made sure the portal was solid. Nothing If I make the portal tranparent, the first record in the portal reveals itself, but no others Maybe I need to figure out better ways to make a "nice-looking" layout -Jeff

Is there a way using FMP (Dev 6) to format a field to use a pop-up list only when requested? For example, the user clicks into the field, but only calls the value list when he/she clicks a button located next to the field which has a down arrow symbol on it (actually the fmforums post writing screen is using exactly what I'm looking for ....). I'm trying to develop something that keeps a user from accidently changing values in a field formatted with a pop-up list. I'd like them to actively call the value list using a button or something rather than having the list just appear when you tab/click into that field. I know this has been looked at before but there must be a way.. I am wondering if there is a way to make this work with custom buttons? When I use "go to field" the field is selected but the menu does not pop up it takes another click to get the menu to open. Please see the attachment. It's the best I can do with the brains I have. Is there a way to skip rows in a portal? I want to use a portal with 25 rows to show appointments for a particular day, but want appointments to show up appropriately spaced throughout the day rather than simply in consecutive rows. Can this be done? Any help would be much appreciated.

I know you can change the layout ordering via the layout menu, but the problem is that whenever I open my database, or go to it via the web, it always goes to one specific layout type... and it's not the first layout in the layout order. How do you change which layout type it opens to? I'm just trying to make it start with a list I made. Thanks!

I am curious as to the best method of inserting buttons into containers. I'm not getting good results when there is text included in the button. Looks very pixelated when in the container, but if inserted directly on to the layout (not in any container field) it looks fine. Few details before the questions... Buttons are from Photoshop saved as PNG Files 96dpi on a mac , however, they will be used only on a Windows network when I'm done with the solution. I've tried a few different graphic settings "reduce and enlarge" seemed to work best, but still not to my satisfaction. I have a Sales file where I can choose a product from a value list defined from a Product file. I have products in my Product file that have been withdrawn that I don't want to appear in the value list but I still want to show in the Product file. Hi everybody, I have made a portal..but i have problem working with it. if i include a field in the first row it wouldn't be apear in the browse mode! I want to do the following: I want to make a portal and put a field on it with the name of journalist in the paper file. Beside it i want to have a button(thus in the same row)which goes to the related record in journalist file. I converted a FMP database which consisted of more than 10 files, from version 5.5 to 7.0. The conversion created a lot of problems and issues. One of the problems is that a field (in file : use a popup list that is designed to use an external value list in a relational file (file A) that shows related values only. This value list (in file : works fine in the Browse mode, but does not show any value in Find mode. I didn't have this problem when the files were in version 5.5. Has anyone seen this problem before? Do you know how to resolve it? Any comments will be appreciated. Thanks!

Whilst it is true that the objects that are contained within a portal are not there on the layout until the data in the join fields match, but - and this is my problem - the user can still click into the portal itself even when it is "invisible". Is there any way of preventing the user from inadvertantly clicking in the area of the screen where the portal will appear (when the join fields match)?

Is there a way to create a new related record in a portal which will only show that new record. My problem is that there are hundreds of related records and over the web it takes ages to show up within the portal and then even longer to edit. My solution is therefore to display the single related record in the portal but I need to create a new one each time. Any suggestions??? PLEASE - I AM IN URGENT NEED!!!

I am trying to display records from a portal where I only have limited vertical space (ie. not much height but plenty of width). I thought I could create 3 identical portals and place them side by side so they would look like columns. In the Portal Setup window I select the initial row of the 2nd and 3rd portal to 9 and 17 respectively as I am displaying 8 rows in each portal. This works fine to display records and I can easily add new related records using a script/button but I am trying to navigate using 'previous' and 'next' buttons and cannot get from one portal to another this way. Hi guys, I've just imported some 2000 records and I could bake a cake let alone get a coffee in the time it takes to sort the records in the portal. Seriously, it takes a full 5 minutes to sort. In fact I just changed one field so it's automatically re-sorted and in the time I've written this and gone to the loo (tmi i know) it still hasn't finished the sort. Indexing is turned on. I imported 230 records before and had the exact same problem with length of time to sort. Any ideas? Edited to add: If i perform a normal sort it works fine. Hi, all - I'm brand new to FileMaker (I'm a MS Access user on Windows) . I have two tables in a contact management database, one containing people, one containing contact actions. They are joined by a third table that allows me to link more than one person with more than one action and vice versa. My people table has a layout with a portal that allows me to see which actions have been taken for each person. Is there any way to be able to add actions directly into that portal? Hi Everyone. I am stuck on something and I have been working on this all morning and I am not able to solve my problem so I thought I would throw it out there to a few others that use filemaker. This may sound really dumb, but I can't get Filemaker Pro to make a portal. In layout view, I click on the portal box, draw it, and the portal setup box comes up. Everything in the "Show related records from:" box is shaded out except "Define Database" and everything else in the portal setup box is greyed out too. I'd like to use "Current table," but it's greyed out. If I try to define a database, every box in the portals setup box is still greyed out. Does anyone have an suggestions? I know this is something dumb... but I would really appreciate any help.

Greetings to all, This is my first post to this board. I am having troubles with some simple calculations in a portal field. In my portal I have 4 dynamic value lists that work in a hierarchy. Once the first is selected the next drop down populates, and so on. Once a certain set of criteria is set then a "Fee" field is to be caluclated. The problem is that the "Fee" field is showing up with the correct calculation in the portal but not in the respective table until I "click" in that field. Sorry if this has been addressed before, I couldn't find it in any previous posts. I am using the Portal Visibility Trick and I am stuck on a problem: The portal is set to become visible when a certain value is selected from a field's menu. However when that value is selected, the portal does not appear. But if I click on the background of the layout, then it does appear. If I go to fill in another field on the layout however it does not make it appear. Only clicking on the background makes it come up. I have 3 db's. The first has a 'Priority' field where numbers 1 to 10 can be inserted. The second db has a calculated result which is just the value of the first db's priority field. The third db has a portal with a relationship with the second db with a sort by 'Priority' so it will list jobs with Priority 1 at the top of the portal, then 2, then 3 etc. The problem is when I alter the priority in the first db although it is changing the priority number in the portal it is not refreshing the list in order of 1,2,3 etc. unless I close the db or go to a different layout and go back again. Is there any way to modify how the layout pop-up menu (in status area) works? For example, grouping layouts into sub menus, or a "more" option like under the Windows menu. For users it's not a problem, but as a developer there are many more layouts visible. Scrolling up & down the pop-up menu becomes tedious when working between layouts. Also, I seem to remember seeing a pop-up menu which spilled into a 2nd column instead of the scroll arrows - was this in a previous version?? I would like to be able to change the fill pattern of a field or button based upon changes of value in another field. I learned earlier this week (thank you All!) how to change font color conditionally. The text color function will make a font turn red if the PRIORITY FIELD is set to "urgent".
