  1. I am having some problem with flashing... FMP blanking parts of my layout and redrawing them (rather than just redrawing over the existing such that you don't notice it). For example, as I step from record to record in my list layout, the majority of my layout does not get redrawn... it looks nice and stable. In contrast, my tab bar flashes... it gets blanked and then redrawn each time. In my List layout, the body and the column titles are stable... except the sort buttons in the column headers flash (along with the tab bar).     I need to print the items in a portal to a pre-printed form. The pre-printed form has 14 rows for information on each page and my portal can have any number of rows. Therefore, I need to find a way to print only 14 rows at a time from the portal. The information to be printed will be entered via a portal. And since each portal of information has a unique ID, could I sequentially number each item when entered and then have items with numbers 1-14 show initially to be printed?     Hi, I hope someone can point me in the right direction on this one. I have files A and B. File A contains a portal showing related records from file B. So far so good. What I want to achieve, is to select a portal row so that I can see all the fields of that related record in a second (single row) portal on the same layout. Hope this makes sense.     I have two fields First Name, Last Name. I defined a value list called Names and it will use values "Last Name" and "First Name" then I created a popup field that plainly displays the valuelist of those fields nicely, However, after selecting the name you are looking for and moving on the the next field the pop up value list field only displays the "Last Name"? at first I thought the layout of the field was to small to display the "Last Name" and "First Name" so I expanded it but it still only shows the "Last Name" any on how I can make that display both?   5. Silly post, but irritating. The Text Formatting Toolbar seems to have disappeared. When selected in either Layout or Browse mode, the tick appears in the vie [color:"blue"] [color:"blue"] w menu, but no toolbar ! I've looked outside the print area, but nothing there.

    I've got a big database spanning over several files, those files has different fields. All this is linked together via a menu system. But, how do I do a search function that finds the criterias in more than one file? If it was so that every field was unique, this would have been no match, but now, I've got some fields that is unique, and some that isn't. I want this search function to both contain a "multisearch" that seeks for the inputted criteria in every single field in every file, and a "normal" search function that let's you input one criteria per field.   8. I have a label layout in which I deleted the footer because I thought I didn't need one. Now it turns out I do need the footer. I have repeatedly gone to part setup and tried to create a footer, but for some reason it won't let me create one. I have also tried to drag the part icon on the the status bar onto my layout, and selected footer as the part I wanted, and that also is not working. Anybody have any thoughts?

I would like to create a portal in that same file that lists a particular field of each of those records within that file, so that I can have a clickable list. While viewing record 3, I can see the list,click and be taken to record 8, etc. I have tried creating a self relationship on a global file to no avail. Is this possible? Thanks

  11. I have a layout that has a sub-summary that is sorted by a field. The part appears before the records belonging to it does. I don't have 'allow part to break across page boundaries' checked. I interpret this to mean that if the part can't fit on the current page, FM starts a new page. Instead, the part is displayed across 2 pages. Is this a known bug, or am I misinterpreting what this function ('allow...') does? Steve

    Hi. I've been scouring this forums, and I'm getting that there are issues with value lists and calculated fields. Basically, here's what I need: I need a pull-down menu of customer names (calculated based on various text fields) on an invoice so that the user can select the item, and have it auto-fill in the address. Right now, I have the "left value" in the value list as the ID number, and the "right value" as the calculated name. So, the pull-down menu isn't showing all the records from the customers table.     Hi, I have set up a layout in a file called orders which has a portal on it, the file also has a relationship with a line items file. When I enter a id in the portal the other fields are filled in via a calculation, which is great.   17. Hello! I have a CDML-based form that displays a master record along with related portal records from a secondary table. Ideally, I would like to be able to edit both the master and portal records from the same form at once. When I submit the form for the master record, I get a 102 error (field name not found). When I remove the portal fields, this error goes away. This must mean that the 102 is generated because FM looks for those field names in the master table? Is there a way to edit the related records?   25. I was hoping someone could offer me a solution to a problem I've been having with a record keeping database I built for my 6th grade classroom. Our district uses a standards based grading system that Use "O S G N" instead of "A B C" for scores. I created a script attached to a button that allows me to sort based on a custom value list so that O is first, G is next, and so on.   26. A cryptic subject but I will try to explain the problem. I have two fields, say "x" and "xcode", where I have a value list connected to "x". When you choose a value in the value list the "xcode" is set to a numeric value for example "1" if you choose the first value. This is performed through the calculation LeftWords(x; 1) Now I want it to work both ways because when I import data from another file to the database it usually only contains the numeric code. The sales file draws a related image into the Sales file via a normal relationship (uniqueID) and that's fine.   32. I just inherited an interesting project. One of the things it does is bring out a 1 to 8 page report.... Using about 20 portals. The good thing is that the author made most of portal share one lineitems database (using dynamic keys method, and not using all fields) so in theory I could print from the line items, but there portals from other databases. so it won't be easy. As well, the author made it so if the portals are empty, they do not print (and shorten the report). I havn't really figured out how he pulled this off. I think he is using print sliding.     I have a multi-table solution running off of FMS 5.5 (all clients are FMP 5.5 too). Multiple platforms are accessing the server. The solution utilizes dynamic value lists based on relations. Everything works great, _except_ on NT clients. The pop-ups show blanks. You click on it, and a single row of nothingness appears. This only occurs in NT (v4, sp6). 95, 98, XP, Mac Classic, and OS X are all fine. Any ideas, solutions, experience? Many thanks.

    I have a one to many job_header to job_items. I have a field setup in the job_items db called 'category' which is either P, L or O. I have a calc field of: If(Job Header to items::CATEGORY="L",Sum(Job Header to items::CHARGES)*.6,0) and also If(Job Header to items::CATEGORY="P",Sum(Job Header to items::CHARGES)*.35,0) I finally add these two calc fields together with: tot_com=L_com+P_com to display the total of the fields in the portal out on the form. I drag out the portal, select "Item" in the show records field, click okay, drop a field on there, and nothing. The portal shows a list-type box and nothing else.     I have a portal that displays a list of documents and has 2 buttons: one to move a document up one row, and another to move a doc downone row. The portal is sorted based on Sequential # (number field). The scripts work for a number of moves and then one or the other screws up, but not always the same one. I can't figure out why.     All, I have 2 databases - FileA and File B. I have succesfully created a simple conditional value list in File A. I now want this list to be used in File B So far.... I have created an external value list in File B linking it to the conditional value list in File A. I have then assigned this list to a field in File B. BUT this doesnt work. I've got a classified database, producing ads for a newspaper, and I'm trying to work on an efficient way to enter and export these ads to go into Quark. Sure, I know, you're all saying XTags, right? I have seen it in a solution where it appears u set up colors and icons and such to be used in an application and it puts or uses those colors etc... in the interface. The interface is made up of a bunch of tabs across the top of the screen and they are all different colors. The final solution appears to be missing some files which i assume are used for development only.     You'll have to let us in to the secret of what each record in your file represents. It's hard to tell you how to summarize when we don't know what we are summarizing. It sounds like you need summary fields and multiple subsummaries on the layout. First a subsummary by month, then another by doctor. Wizards are great if they solve your problem, otherwise you'll have to dive in and understand how it all works. -bd

In an attempt to not have to scroll to the bottom of the portal window to create a new record (automatically), I have created scripted buttons that create a new record from the student database into the attendance database and sets the status of attendance.     Each one of my records refers to a specific auction number. When an auction doesn't sell, it is duplicated, and the previous item # is put into an "old item number" field.     I'm working on a receiving db where I'm getting the raw info from an old DOS accounting system (so I can't set everything up right the first time!). I'm currently importing two files into two dbs. I have a header file (PO #, date, name of vendor, etc.) and a line items file. The line items come to me flagged by a status field as either Open or Complete. Typically, a 100 line PO could dribble in from the vendor over several months, meaning any given line item could go from Open to Complete without affecting the status of its neighboring line items.     I have been using portals for a long time. But - never think of the connecting files as Parent and Child. I just want to make sure I have each one labeled in my head correctly. For this example - I will use Invoices and LineItems. The invoices db has a portal to the lineitems for individual line entry. The parent file would be the LineItems database and the child file would be the invoices databases. Correct? When I have a field that is definded by a value list, I don't get any pop up menu when i want to enter data! My questions are this: where did it go?     Situation: In my layout I have a nicely sized portal with a number of fields inside, each field has some space around it for legibility sake. Problem: When someone clicks on the row without clicking inside one of the fields, the whole row turns black to indicate it is selected. Similarly, if I change the fill color of the portal to a dark color (it is currently white) a lighter contrasting color will appear. Question: Can anyone suggest a more refined way to handle this, for instance a lighter gray on a white background. Or is this built in and unchangable?

    can anyone suggest a way to do the following. I need to be able to create "x' number of related records in a portal where x is the total months between 2 dates. Basically i have a date range from 1/1/2002 to 3/1/2002 which equal 3 months (anyone know how to calc that to reach "3") and then create "3" related records starting with January and ending with March. The end result would be that i select employee A in the portal from a value list, FM would then create 3 records with the same employee name which auto incremented months ending on March. does this make sense?   64. OK ... so all you supergeniuses out there, see if you can help me with this. I have a calculated field showing in a checkbox format in a cell. Shows up beautifully. But, I wanted a button to sit over each checkbox, for when the user tries to check the boxes (as a calculation, it won't let them, of course).     I have two database files. "Contacts" and "Projects". The "Project" database is using two portals to display related entries from two relationships from "contacts" called "primary" & "secondary". For each "Project" Record there are several primary contacts and each primary has several "secondary" contacts related to it. The number of "secondary" contacts for each "primary" is not known but i would like each to be displayed associated with the proper "primary" contact. Theoretically placing a secondary portal in each line of the primary portal. Any help would be appreciated.

Items are dealt with and then deleted from portal but how can we retain the items (archive them) in the Line Items file when they are deleted on the portal?     I posted this message in the Define Fields area - but I really think it needs to be in here. I am duplicating invoices - that have a portal on them. When I duplicate the invoice - the general information duplicates, the date is increased via my script, and the inovice number is increased. But - the portal information (line items) does not move over as well. Here's my problem: I have three related files: Departments Staff Projects Departments and Staff are related such that for each Department there are multiple staff members, and each staff member is associated with more than one department.     I'm working with a database that has pop up lists in it. One of the pop up lists, when not being used (waiting for an entry) shows a title, i.e. Select Sport and then when u click on it all the different sports show up, but 'select sport' does not. How does one title the pop up list so it's not blank without actually putting a text box over it cuz i don't believe that's how it's done in this case.   78. I think that this is the correct forum. In layout mode on my computer if I click on the Layout pop-up menu, it brings up all of the layouts but they go off the bottom of the screen. This gets a bit annoying if the layout I need is the last one on the list. On other computers though if the list goes off the screen it shows up in a second column and makes my life a lot easier. Is there any reason for this. A bit petty I know but does annoy me!!!

    Hello, I've just tried porting a runtime solution to Mac and most everything works okay. One odd behavior; in a portal that shows only one row at a time, the "go to next row" and "go to previous row" scripts do change the row number but the field data remains what appears in the first row. If you click in the fields, they update to what should be in the row navigated to. The full version that I brought to the mac, navigates the portal rows as expected, only the runtime appears not to update portal row data.   83. Hi! I know this is a little anal, but it really makes my data entry interface UGLY, so here goes. I made this lovely little data entry form, with fields scattered all across it, many of these fields are the same color as the backrgound so that they are invisible if they don't have data. However, if I start entering data in a field, all these semi-transparent highlight borders appear around random fields across the layout, usually every field at once. Is there any way to stop this?

I'd like to create an "event log" wich keeps track of items such as "user ID, script name, file name, and results such as: email successfully sent, email successfully received, script executed normally, script error occured, etc." Since i want a centralized file, i figured i'd use a portal.     I have 2 database tables: The parent database table (Contract) displays related Contract Logs, from the Child database table (Contract Logs) via a portal. From the parent database, I can use the command Goto Related Record to select the relevent record in the Child Database. Is there anyway that once a record in the Child Database is selected, the relevent portal row in the Parent Database can be selected. Everytime I try to highlight a SPECIFIC portal row (by file contents for example), only the first row gets selected. The other portal row option (first,last,next etc) aren't specific.   90. i have built a splash screen for my DB, that basically has a graphic that simulates a progress bar and a global text field below it that shows progress text. the script that runs has a series of actions and before each action, i run a sub script that sets the global container field (that shows the progress bar) with the progress bar graphic and also the next text to appear below... problem is that it only updates the screen every so often even though i have Refresh Screen at the beginning and end of the subscript and even a goto Field (with no field listed) at the end of the script.

In ten years of using FMPro, I had never run into the fact that there is a 255 character limit for each value. And, since I was exceeding that number, the phases would truncate.   98. I just recently had a need to print a list through a portal. I noticed that it only prints the shown part of the list. I was wondering if there was a way to have it print the entire list, similar to how a columnar list/report does. I tried making a columnar list and placing related fields in it, but it only shows the first related record, not the entire list.     I am using FM 4.0v1 and have made a value list from another db to display in my main db. The value db has fields that list the type and grade of material. Since is it hard to determine what type of material is being chose by just looking at the grade I have check the box that says show information for other fields. But only the first matches showup in the value list in the main db. Example: Grade Type SA234 Pipe SA516 Plate SA106 Pipe Value list will only show SA234 and SA516 (along with the type) put not SA106 could someone suggest what I am doing wrong?
