I am working with fmp5 for Mac in the office & PC @ home. Layouts on the Mac are loosing or moving the graphics boxes I used to surround fields. Sometimes the bottom line of the box will move & overlap the top line. This problem fixes itself (for the moment) if the window is minimized or scrolled through. I am having a similar problem with my pc. When in layout mode, title fields & entry fields leave trace lines every time they are moved. I really need to fix the mac problem ASAP. The data base is being created for other users & was to be ready for use on 2/15/01. So I guess my basic question is why the hell do I have to keep refreshing the D-base …

I have encountered a peculiar problem.I have a field formatted as a value list. When I click on the field the value list (which draws its values from another file) displays only 10 values, although there are 112 records in the source file. I'm running FM 4.0v1 on an elderly Mac (with plenty of RAM). I'm sure there's a simple explanation- I just can't find it. Thanks

I apologize if this is too basic. I have previously used portals to link to related databases and create new records (in the related db) by entering data straight into the portal. However, now I am getting the message whenever I try to do this that the field (in the child database) cannot be modified until given a valid value, and no permutation of data is ever accepted as valid by FM. I also notice that no list of records shows up in the portal (only the top row is active at all). I have checked that the field types are correct, new record creation is authorized in the related db, and the data entry clearly fits in the parameters for that field. Is this familiar to any…

I have two files. Sites and Letters. The site file has fields with computer information in the fields. There is a Site Name field, System Type field, MaintExDate and a Computer Serial Number field. On site or "Site Name' could have 12 records (12 computers at that site). The Letters file has a portal in it that has the related System Type, Compuer Serial and MaintExDate in it. The relationship is based on the unique site names. So the Letters file displays a Site name and in the portal all the computer systems related to that site. I have been trying to decypher the system by which the FM5 256 color palette is organized without much success. Colors seem to be lumped in bunches without any order, except for the gray scale. Has anybody cracked it, or know of where it is documented? I have determined that colors along a horizontal row seem to go together nicely, but other than that, I am puzzled by how to locate that one right color easily.

Hello, I'm just learning and have tryed out using a Pop Up List which works great. But when I printed out a record I found that there is a box printed around the Pop Up List field. I have a value list, on clicking one of the items, the page refreshes. (on change command). On the refreshed page it displays the selected value as if it is the first possible selection, the value is then duplicute in the list. Since I can't state the problem well, I'll just describe it (sorry for being verbose). I'm trying to do a search of students that are enrolled in our program for the Fall 2000 Computer program. However, when I do a search (the information is in a portal, with semester, year, and program as separate fields), I get all students that have any mixture of those values. For example, I get students that may have had Fall 1999 computer and Spring 2000 tutorial, since FMP doesn't distinguish between rows in the portal. Is there any way I can prevent this? Please ask if anything is unclear. Thanks.

To anyone who can help; APPLICATION: FileMaker Pro 4.1 PROBLEM: Scripting a button SCENARIO: There are 3 relational files. PI (Product Inventory), I (Invoice), and LI (Invoice Line Items). 'I' contains 2 portals, one for "PI" and one for "LI". While in "I", I want to click on a field "Model No" in the "PI" portal and paste it in the "Model No" field in the "LI" portal. I want the paste function to happen in the next available empty "Model No" field in the "LI" portal. I would also like to know if there is an efficeint way to delete portal rows from the main file. Hi. Simple problem--can't believe there's not a solution. I have the EASIEST layout I've ever assembled. All it consists of is a list of text fields. They're all set to slide and shrink, and that works fine. However, when a field splits between two pages, parts of a line are printed on the bottom of the first page, and the rest of the line is printed on the top of the next page. How can I prevent this? It seems rather simple, and I can't believe FMP would allow text to be cut like this. Help. Bevin

I am trying to implement a task tracker which is basically hierarchal in nature with three files: Projects, Milestones, Tasks. I need a Project report which will display the associated Milestones and tasks for the found set. The concept of a portal within a portal discribes it nicely, but seems to be impossible. I thought it might be possible to display from the middle level. Using a portal will show the child-tasks. But not sure how I can group all related Milestones together that are under a singe project. My boss sends me deep into FMP about once a year, so I never really get as good as I might. appreciate any help you might offer

We have three database files currently to track mediations. The first is a Case database file with all information related to cases. The second is a Mediators database file with mediator contact information, etc. The third is a join file (I think) with a record for each time a mediator shows up in a specific case from the Case file. There can be up to 3 mediators per case. Okay, the Case file is set up with a portal to the join file so that we can enter a mediator for the specific case and a record is automatically created in the join file. I have Order records, Item records, and Product records stored in one flat file. I have a layout for displaying information about Order records only. It has a portal on it that displays the line items (Item records) for a given order. The portal displays an Item ID field which has a popup list that lets the user select from a list of Product IDs. When a user selects a Product ID it gets placed in the active Item ID field in the portal, no problem. Now, I have several other Item fields displayed in my portal along side the Item ID field. Hopefully someone can help. Working in FM 3. What I need to do is set up a database, where in 1 record there is a list of possible options (let's say 10). The user needs to be able to choose any number of the options. I then need these choices only to be printed on a separate layout. Possible? I'm guessing a script w/ a looping if statement, since I can't search for multiple fields within one record . . . but, then again, if I knew the answer I wouldn't be asking. I'd like to be able to have portals resorted by clicking on header fields just above the protal. Example: A portal contains the following related fields: F1, F2, F3. Above each field is a text header: "F1", "F2", "F3". When I click on the F2 header I want the portal to be resorted on F2. It appears that portal sorting is completely determind by the sort option setting in the relationship definition dialog and that this can only be set by interfacing manually with this dialog. Is this true or is there a way around this?

Trying to create a ledger card metephor. Transactions in the portal are posted starting at the top and moving down organized by date (most recent at bottom and oldest at top). Would like to display to default at the bottom of the portal and show the last "n" records (The most recent) from the bottom of the portal up. Is there a way to do this conveniently. I know you can do this by setting bits on/off in the child records to allow only those records to show that are most recent. But, this cuts off the ability to scroll through all records. Any ideas?

When printing a report in Filemaker 5, if a field stretches to over a page the text in that field can be split over the two pages. This means that you get the top half of the text from one line on one page, and the bottom half of the text from that same line on the next page. The report has approx. 30 records, each being anything up to two pages long. I know that there was an unsupported feature in Filemaker 4.1 which got around this problem, does anyone know how to get around it in Filemaker 5?

My problem is surely quite simple, but I am a newbie at scripting. Here it is: I have two files: main and second, and a simple relationship on one field. A have another field with the same name on each base. There's probably an obvious and easy way to do this, but I can't find it: I have a portal that displays a selection of records from the same file, via a self-join based on a unique number. This is in order to display groups of records that belong together. What I want to do is to show a mark (red dot) in a portal row when the user is in the matching record. Heres a little trick I just figured out that might help someone else. I was using 5 levels of global conditional menus to drill down to a specific product and grab that products description and price with a lookup. However, not all products need all five levels. So if you first select something with 5 levels then want to go back and change one of the menus in the middle of the series, the later popups still have data from the first selection even if you don't need it. I am getting crazy trying to figure out the following. I have a layout that includes 3 pop-up value lists (from a tab order standpoint they are 1 2 and 3). Those are the only fields on that layout. Whenever I select a value for the first field,the next field (as defined by the tab order) that also validates via a pop-up value list "expands" to display the different values. Looks like the pointer jumps to the next field which in turn displays the different possible values. I could avoid that by having regular fields "between" (from tab order standpoint) the fields that validates via a value list but I am pretty sure that there is another more elegant and simpler way …

I am developing an application in Filemaker 4.0 which I would like to be cross platform. I am using a windows machine. I am developing buttons and copying and pasting to my database but when I do that and open it in the macintosh machine I get the windows logo, not the graphic. The only type I see is BMP which is too large to use. What can I do? I do not have a Mac and I was not going to buy one. I did not want to use other people's buttons. Can anyone help?

I recently upgraded our systems to 5.0.3 and still cannot seem to get one simple function to work in FM. I need to set up heirarchical menus, also known as conitional menus. We have a database known as "products" it contains fields such as Manufacturer, model, description and price. The second database is "proposals". Users in proposals fill in a repeating field with information from products to generate a proposal for our customers. The problem is that products have grown to over 2000 items. I have 2 databases (CustomerDB and JobDB) related to each other. In my CustomerDB, I have a Portal Window that looks at the JobDB. How can I sort the records in this window by JobDate? I am trying to set up (pardon me if I am not getting terminology correct) several different values in a pop-up list. I can define the value lists just fine by typing in all the text I need (over 255) for each value. Then when I attempt to view the field in "browse" and I click on it and chose a specific value, only 255 (approx.) characters of that value will be displayed. The remaining text for that value does not pop up. I can continue typing it in, but that defeats my purpose of having it pretyped and just choosing the paragraph I want displayed in the field. I have a portal that allows creation of new records. Whenever I add a new record, that information is displayed twice, once on it's line, and also in the new blank line where the new record is suppossed to be. So a blank line for a new record is not presented, but when I click on the duplicate 2nd line (where the blank line is suppossed to be) and change something, it will also change the first line. I'm not an expert, but have been using FM Pro for several years. I have a value list called Media, and within that the values are for ex., Chemical Engineering, Design News, etc. Would like to show a summary of how many records of each media, i.e., 12 Design News, 14 Chemical Engineering, etc. Any easy way to do this? I have two fields defined as 'Group' and 'Group Area'. Group is defined as a value list. What I am trying to achieve is that when a user makes a Group selection then depending on this selection a value list is displayed for Group Area. So there is a number of valulist that can be displayed for Group Area depending on the selection made in Group. (Hope this makes sense). I've been trying to do a calculation on Group (i.e. if Group = 'blah' then display valuelist 1 for field Group Area elses if Group = 'blah2' then display valuelist 2 for field Group Area, etc). Dear FileMaker Pro's, In my FMP db I'm using portals with scrolling window to display data from related databases. The empty portal for entry of a new record disappears when maximum amount of portal rows has been used. Users are forced to scroll down in order to add a new record. I do not want a button with go to last portal row which clutter up my layout. Is there a work around or a way to force this line up in the portal? Anyone with a brilliant idea? I have a basic creative request database that has a status pulldown menu populated by a value list for each request. The value list does not have a "complete" entry because I've created a button to mark jobs complete and runs a script. The button marks the job complete and adds a complete time and date stamp in a job log. I'm very new to FM Pro version 5, so I apologize if this is an easy question (I just haven't figured it out yet!) I have a master list of students at my school (approx. 600 kids). Some kids have Goal Plans, some don't. Is there a way that when I do a Find for the kid, that the program can tell me how many Goal Plans are on file, and list them by date in a Pull-Down Menu, to allow me to select a plan and view it? Some kids may have more than one plan per year. Some kids may have one every year. Most kids have none. Hello everyone, I would like to know how a script/calc could look through a group of records and note which was the first to have a checkbox set; then somehow notify the following records of this fact so they could set themselves in response. This is in an estimate where the value of the first item's labor can be taken at full value, while those that follow lose a portion of their labor value due to the implied economy of scale. Hi- first time poster. I'm an editorial assistant at a publishing house, and I'm working on scripting a database where one of the fields contains what is generally a very long string of text and various editors look over each record and insert some HTML code linking it to other records. Now, I've done some scripting so that they merely have to select the text they want linked, and click a button, and the HTML code from the other record will be automatically inserted if it matches the title of another record. The thing they want, though, is for this inserted text to be bold and red. Is there any way to do that?(I know once you start calculations, the formatting gets thrown…

I have a value list defined; I'm sharing my database over the network using web security with edit enabled and no field restrictions on the value list in question. When a remote user edits the value field, a blank field shows on the remote screen even though the change appears on the master database. The only way the change ever becomes visible on the remote screen is for the value list to be clicked upon in the master database manually. Validation is selected rather than AutoEnter. Anyone else ever experience this problem, have any ideas?:

I would like to know if there is any way to link a field containg keywords to a thesaurus (list of terms with synonyms and if possible multilingual). For example, I want the data base to understand that chair=armchair=chaise without having to enter the three terms each time. If the equivalence is set in a thesaurus once for all, when I search for chair, the result will aslo display records containg equivalent values. Thank you for your replies

We are using the CDML field(dynamic) in an add WEB file. However, all it puts on the WEB page is the code and does not pull from the database the required Value list. Following is the code: email: <select name ="email"> [FMP-ValueList: email , Results] <option> [FMP-ValueListItem] [/FMP-ValueList] </select> All that appears is [FMP-ValueList: email , Results] <option> [FMP-ValueListItem] [/FMP-ValueList] Can anyone tell us what is wrong? We can't even get a call to work. Perhaps we are not coding it correctly.

Hello all, I have a yes/no type of variable in FM Pro 5 that I want to use a radio button for. The trick is that I want the user to see the words 'Yes' and 'No' next to the buttons, but have FM actually store a 1 or 0 respectively if the user clicks 'Yes' or 'No'. Is this possible? Ron

Hi, i have a database containing the fields: company, name and phone. on the searchform i want to have a dropdownmenu containing all firms. That is no problem - i can use a valuelist from company. But, the second dropdownmenu should contain now a list of all name in the firm that is selected. I.E. show all names in the list where the firm = 'first selection'. Place the VO Script field on the layout and give it what you think would be the maximum amount of space that it would need. Then while the field is selected, go to the Format->Sliding/Printing. Click on the check box for Sliding up based on All above and click the check box for Also reduce the size of the enclosing part. Now when you preview or print the layout, the part will reduce in size so that it only leaves room for the data actually in the record. Chuck

I am designing a database. I am using multiple layouts and placing fields from one layout into another. My problem is that I created a checkbox value list in one layout. The information checked is "supposed" to appear in another layout(table format) as a single line of information containing only those values that were checked. I can't get it to work!! The info will appear, but it is listed in the field as one value per line (which is impossible to deal with in a one lined table). Is there any way I can format the second field to present the data consecutively? THANK YOU

Working on the county's Compaq with NT, somtimes the where the cursor appears to be is not where the text is inserted. In other words, for instance, if I wanted to put a word into that last sentence between the last two words and went to click the cursor in the space, the cursor would appear to be there but when I start typing the text might appear ten spaces back...

I have a field with checkboxes and 8 items in the value list. The problem is that when I "uncheck" a value, that value is still "visible" to a search, i.e., a search on that value returns the record, although the value is no longer checked. I've converted the field back to a standard field, the uncheck values do not appear... Any ideas would be much appreciated?

Is this possible? I have a set amount of unique values that I want to create a Value List from (These values are IP Addresses). Pretty straight forward you say ... a Custom Value List. I then want a Value List that contains only the IP Addresses used so far. Again you say ... Simple, use a Value List generated from the IP Address field. The point where I get confused is here ... I want the user, when assigning a record an IP address, to choose from a third Value List. This third list is the same as the first list, except, it has been stripped of all the IP Addresses already used (the second list). Can anyone give me a point in the right direction? Thanks in adva…

Hey all, I'm in a bit of pinch where I am depending on a dynamically-generated value list to match a dynamically-generated valueID list. The problem is that FM writes out the text values in Alphabetical order and writes out the IDs in ascending order. I'm not sure this is the right area to post but here goes- I have a large database (1200) of Doctors which are attending our conference. Every year, they have just wiped the database and start all over again as the people register. Can I create a new database to suck the names & information out of my main database, like a pop-up list of names and get it to fill in the fields? I have no clue how to even start. Is there a calculation or script, which would find entries in a field which do not match a value list? In this case, the value list is being imposed after the file has been in use for several years. The "Category" field in the approximately 4,500 records contains all sorts of two-letter codes. I have created a value list and want to isolate records whose data does not match the list.

I having been a fmp user for awhile and now that I have upgraded to fmp 5 I have a question regarding showing a subset of values. I have a database with a field called product name that has dozens and dozens of values in it. I am wanting to have only partial lists show when a category is selected. I have tried setting up a joined relationship for the file and can not get it to work. All help will be appreciated.

Can you have a relationship to a relationship? I have a portal showing item,model and part number all coming from one related file. The item and model are fields in the related file. The part is a relationship to a third file. When I add the part into the portal only one part shows for all items, and models. Is it because its a relationship to a relationship?

I am creating a database that is meant to score some records with keywords once a collection of records have been scored I need to label the subset of records with a category name. I have set up a many to many relational database using a portal. When using a pull down list of established keywords the records show up in the portal. Once this sub set has een found I need to enter test in a field that would assign its value to the visible records. Is it possible to use a variable to get the value of the field and then insert this text into a field in another file?

Ok, so I can make checkboxes...it's fairly simple. I don't know if I've changed preferences or what, but now when I create a checkbox (make the value lists and everything)...the box appears, my text appears..but there are no checkboxes.. it doesn't give me any options to click the x. I've compared my new not-working checkboxes to other ones, and it seems everything is exactly alike. I know my question is vague..but can someone fill me in on something I may be missing..or need to double check? Thanks.

I am pretty new to FileMaker but learning fast. I have a database with 1 field which has a number of Records, at present around 150. In another database there is another field that when clicked brings up the 150 records in a scrolling list. This is fine. What I want to do is in this field is add knew names etc, which will then create a new record in the first database. Is this simple to do?
