FM7 eliminates text wrapping within the files it converts from FM6. Words get cut off at the end of sentences and pickup on the next line. I have tried to clone the file and then import the data, but that hasn't worked. The only solution I've seen and tried that has worked is to create a new fm7 file and then import the data. But as a practical matter, I can spend hours and hours of time recreating all my old data bases. I need to convert my old files and keep text wrapping. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have a interesting problem when I take the focus away from a phone number field. I have a script that automatically formats the data to the appropriate type ex: when you enter 1223334444 it then converts to (122)333-4444 The script works fine(that part atleast). When I lose focus of that field and tab or click on another the data changes to this: -1.2233e+09 Why is that happening and how can I tell my script to retain the calculation? The field is defined as a number and auto enters the calculated value. Thanks! Chris

My company's flagship product needs constant client updating. In better words, there are 7 core database files (that rarely change), and several hundred "modual" files (these modual depend on the core files). Each client has all of the core files, but a different amount of the modual files, depending on thier needs. I get at least one request a day "this client need this modual", or we've completed a new modual, and now needs to be distributed to the client(s) that ordered it. How we're sending out these updates/orders currently is this - I'll modify a "Main Menu" file (copied from the Client's last update) to include a script-run button to open the new modual …

How do I open new windows in front in FM7? Close others? I'm trying to have Window A, when click, OPEN Window B in FRONT for editing Window A, then ON SUBMIT, close Window B, return to a refreshed Window A. Also, a side question: I'm leaning on designing this new database with individual files. I know that with FM7 you can design all files as TABLES and have one, all encompassing, file. What would happen where this one, all encompassing, file to crash, get corrupted, or other mishap? Are my instincts correct? Or am I missing out on the beauty of delivering one file to the client? --soda

To start with I am rather new with filemaker pro So maybe it's very easy but i'm just not seeing it. But i'm working 2 days straight on it. We are working here with a users database. You can search users and get information from it But we want an option to make a letter and you get some templates of the letter. And then the option te save the letter.. But the letter has to be saved in a different database linked to the user where it's sent to But also to multiple users. And the second table has to contain that information. We are using MS FrontPage as the web programming tool. I am wondering if I can connect FileMaker Pro with FrontPage. In other words, if I can call up FileMaker Pro db from FrontPage and use the data to create the dynamic sites. Currently, I set up my local machine as a mini web server. I have WinXP, installed IIS 5, installed FileMaker WSC6. I am new to both FrontPage and FileMaker. couldn't seem to connect them together. I have a text field that logs information from a serial plug-in. The contents will always extend beyond the field, so there is a vertical scroll bar. The problem is that the field defaults to display at the top, while the log information is added to the bottom. Does anyone know of a way to force a text field to default display at the bottom (i.e. scrolled down), even while the user accesses other fields? Thanks!

I may give up on FMP7 after all. It is back to forgetting both its last sort and layout. For example, I hit ctrl-j to show all records, put it in either List or Main view, sort with most recent date first, put with the cursor on the top record, and close. When I open again, it's in List view (whether I closed in List or Main) with the cursor way down in the middle of the database, and sorted to an old, previous sorting order. I had this problem before; at that time I removed all scripts and button assignments before converting the file from version 6 to 7, and that seemed to fix it. But now, with no scripts added (button assignments put back in), the problem is back …

Using FM 7.0v3 Today I entered into find mode for one of my layouts. I did not enter any data into any fields on the layout and just hit the find button. Normally FM will display all records but this time it displayed an error saying, "There are no valid criteria in this request. Type a valid request before clicking Find." I tried the same on other files and tables and all the same. What does this mean? Do I have to enter data to do a find now? This has never happened before. Are my files corrupted, or has Filemaker changed the find mode in FM 7? Can someone enlighten me.

Good day, I want to import files I have been working on in Windows XP over to a MAC. I've just tried converting my largest database (ca. 11.500 records/330MB), and I'm beginning to see what version 7 is worth. And disappointingly, that doesn't seem to be a lot... I run FileMaker on the following systems: 1) Mac os X 10.3.5 (Panther) on G4/450MHz DP, 1GB RAM, ATI Rage128 Pro/16MB 2) Windows 2000 Professional with SP4 on Intel Pentium III Coppermine/1GHz, 512MB RAM, onboard GPU (Intel 82810E) With version 7 I've noticed: 1) File-bloating; converted files (from *.fp5 to *.fp7) seems to grow to an average rate of 40%, in some some cases even more. I'm stuck with my databases, and I'm fairly new to this, so please excuse my naivity. This is my first post. I have a database with about 15 records. This database refreshes on a monthly basis to produce about 15 invoices, that's all good and easy. Each record is an "order/invoice" for a "client" and has 10 fields for any of the many of products they can purchase. The 10 fields are named "product 1" "product 2" etc to 10. These fields then typically have data typed into them describing the product eg. "newspaper", and usually have from 1 to 6 different or similar products per order/record. Hi I am totally confused by this one... I have a Staff Detail layout where Staff info is updated. On this form I have a button to display staff Report of all the Staff. I am opening this Report in a new window. The problem is the when the report opens in a new window, the Staff Detail layout also adjusts to the new window size. I don't want this to happen. The Staff Detail Window is open in "Maximize" mode initially and I would like it to remain that way.... Thanx

Hi, I'm trying to create a report from a database where I have different items and their locations (selected by radio buttons), there can be many entries for each item as they are located in different places at different times. What I need is to take the newest date entry for each item and use that to create a report that tells me how many of each item is in each location at any time I choose to view the report. I have a bunch of files in a folder with systematized filenames in the following order: name123_a.pdf, name125_b.pdf and name231_x.pdf. I want to import the files (automatically) and then fill out the following automatically: name language The name is the first letters and numbers separated by a hyphen, thus: name-123. The "_a", "_b" and "_x" refer to what language the file is in, where "_a" is English, "_b" is Norwegian and "_x" is both. Is it possible to automate the insertion of file names in the proper format, and the words English, Norwegain and English/Norwegian just from a file import action? Any help gratefully received. P

I have a database which contains equipment and a date tested. As an example equipment may need tested annually. How do I generate a reminder that a particular piece of equipment is due for test by either automatically producing a weekly/monthly report or having a pop-up box appear on screen to remind the user that a piece of equipment is due to be tested. On my standard letters I have a line which contains details of the client such as title, surname, DOB, Address line 1 and postcode. at the minute I have to have the field size set to the largest so if someones surname has 20 Characters in it i have to have enough space for this then if the next client only has 4 characters I end up with a big gap befor the DOB . OK...Can anyone explain to me how exactly does the imbeded image in the FM container field gets "automatically" udated when changes occur to the OG image. I have insterted images into container fields using an OLE connections and I've changed the link options to update automatically but the image still does not update automatically. Why do I have to go and update links manually even after I've specified it to do it automatically...Help ! Any suggestions on what the best way to handle images (Illustrator) is !!!!

I have a script that is copying data from a field on one file, and pasting it into a field on another file. I have a portal that is looking at the information on the file where the data is being pasted. When I click on the button that runs this script and goes to the layout with the portal, I get an error message saying "This record cannot be modified in this window because it is already being modified in a different window" and the script is not completed (it copies but not pastes). But if I click the button a second time, it works fine. What do I have to do to make it work the first time round???

Hey, I have a contact management db were each record is given a unique auto-entered serial number. The serial number is used as the key for lots of relationships. If a user creates a record for Mr. Smith, with all of the address and phone info, and then has to create a record for Mrs. Smith, the first thought is to duplicate the record and then change the name, saving all of the time of address and phone data entry. The problem is that the serial number duplicates too. I've the ID set to be unique, and don't allow user overrides, but the duplicate record command creates two records with the same ID, and this has the potential to be fatal. Any ideas on how…

Each table can have a varying number of child records in a related table. Each parent will have at least one child, but can have an unlimited number after that. Ok, this is going to be as detailed and clear as I can make it. I have been working on a quote database for our company and I have run into a problem (for me). The quote is laid out by room name (a field in a leading sub-summary by room name part) then items in the room (in the body, single line of info populated in a list in preview mode) then a sum total of the room items (in a trailing sub-summary by room name part). This give me a printout of all the rooms in the quote with room info and total below. Pretty straight forward until now. I have a database in which I have a list of "Area of Expertise" beside each Area I have a checkbox formatted to display only one checkbox. The user checks the box to indicate that they have experience in that area. There are 34 checkboxes on my layout. Now I want to do a "Summary Report" which will only display the area of expertise that are CHECKED. How do I do this? Do I have to use a calaculation field? Corrected a problem that could cause an incomplete update of records displayed in a portal based on a relationship across multiple tables. Started yesterday morning with a corrupted DB??? Appears I was able to recover data and then import into clone of back-up. NEW DB still seems unstable . . .but working However, on the new DB I cannot get the search to work on checkboxes. I can tab through records and see large numbers with checkboxes checked (different lists for announcements), HOWEVER when I do a find on one of these checkboxes I am told there are no matching records (which I know is not true). Hi, I recently joined the filemaker-comunity. I already read some books and some of the documention. Since I have some background in c++, php and perl-programming, I am pretty suprised by how easily you can create complex stuff without programming. Can someone tell me if this is possible? I was tinkering with the Business Tracker db I downloaded and when I open a pending invoice and click on the product code a drop down list appears with a selection of products available to apply to the invoice. When I drop the list down again to add another item to the invoice the "previous" product is still available in the list. Is there a way to change it so that once a product is applied to a particular invoice it would NO LONGER be available for selection again. I can't see a reason why you would want to apply the same item to ONE invoice more than once. It would make it easier if you could eliminate that item from the …

I currently have a db with 2000 clients in it on one lay out I have the option of senidng a standard letter to the GP so when you click GP letter sent - yes it runs a srcipt which should go to the GP standard letter and print it the return to te original layout. unfortunately i think I have missed someting as when I do this it prints the standard letter for all 2000 clients....not what I want can anyone tell me what i'v missed out.

Anyone else seeing a MASSIVE slowdown in import performance in FM7? I've done some quick benchmarking, and my imports are between 3x and 5x slower than they were in FM6. Of interest: it appears as if the import starts out quickly and then progressively slows down. For example, the first megabyte of a 5MB file may take a few minutes, but towards the end, it's literally importing at a dozen bytes per second. I just upgraded Mac OS from 10.2.8 to 10.3. Had problems, reverted back to 10.2.8, then finally back to 10.3. I back up regularly to 2nd drive using Backup and to CD using Disk Copy.. All files are OK but when I open FMP, all records entered after May 2004 are gone! That is a lot of work kaput. I went to restore from drive using Backup to find that file was the same May date. Assuming the problem was somehow related to the OS upgrade I grabbed the CD which was backed up before the change over and ti my horror, guess what? The same. Does anyone have any ideas? When using the Substitute() function to change the font of some of the text in a field, the entire field changes fonts if the searchString includes the first character of the text in the field. For example: Create a database, "myDB", with a field, "myText", containing the text "some text", formatted with the Courier font. Trying to get a value list that is a repeating field specified in another field I can get it to work, but when I base it on a relationship I seem to loose all of the repeating fields except for the first repeating field. I think I am missing something, but I just can't seem to figure it out, I have changed things back and forth to different relationships, and even creating a stand alone relationship, nothing seems to be working. I am trying to control the opening and closing of windows in my db. In the solution I am developing I have a script that opens a new window/layout to pick from a small list records, the next script step closes the new window you just made your choice from and it is supposed to take you back to the main parent window and complete the rest of the script. I have two DBs that are happily related. However, DB "A" will not lookup a corresponding field in DB "B". Both are text fields, so there is not a compatibility problem. I have followed Hoyle's rules a dozen times and it just doesn't work. I am a FM 6.0 newbie, so I'm figuring it's me or a problem when I installed the software. When I try to "relookup" the field, it tells me there is no corresponding field in the related DB, even though I have established the link. Help!!! It's driving me crazy.

Hi, this is very strange and only seems to happen in one of my databases. But the rolodex buttons to flip between records, and the status area counters seem to be broken in one of my databases. It's a database that normally goes on behind the scenes. When I flip to it after a while the rolodex slider bar seems to disappear and the record counter displays only 200 or so records, and the 'show all records' menu item is greyed out. There is over 30,000 records in the database. For example, I've just done a search for any records that have an id and it returns a correct found count of 33264 but the records number is stuck on 122! Even if I omit 1 record, and t…

Hi, I wasn't sure where to stick this post so here goes. I have a DB that must print reports on a daily basis. Sometimes we have to print past reports, etc. I want to automate the whole process. I am a transfer from Access where I could use a pop up calendar and a print button from a query. So far what I can tell is that in order to get the correct day I have to make a button to send the user from the form to the print layout, then have them go into Find Mode to enter the specific day. For some reason...on only 1 page on 1 layout of my file I have started getting an error tone (beep) whenever I tab to the next field after entering information in any edit box. Does anyone know what might cause this? I have deleted every field individually to see which field is causing it and it keeps happening no matter what I try (I even remade the entire layout to see if it would help). I'm running into a problem with users and permissions. I can get FM to only show the records associated with a particular user (using "<fieldname> = get(username)"), but rather than hiding the records that aren't applicable, I see a "No Access" in the fields. I'd a text field in all records in FM4. I only can find the record by specifying the text up to a certain character in the string. When I specify it beyond that character, I can't find that record. But other records with same text field can be found. The text field is defined as "text with index if necessary". The text string is "Boc-LPYEGSLLLKLLRAPVEEV-HMP Resin". I can find the record only by specifying up to the 1st "V" i.e. *RAPV* (* wild card cahracter). Hi. Is there any way of getting onBlur and onFocus type functionality with FM objects in a layout? I want to run a script to check the contents of a text box field when it becomes deselected and then set the contents of another field accordingly. Aggghh! Sorry. I FINALLY convinced the powers that be that FM would be a worthwhile investment and now I've got til tomorrow to get this database working.... I've tried my best to see if someone reported this before, but no luck. Has anyone experienced problems with buttons in v7. Even simple ones, which I made tranparent retain the borders after it has been clicked, and after the script has run. Not to mention that it isn't possible anymore to build shaded button with the borders toolbox as in prior versions.

I am a school teacher, as part of our afterschool program, we need to setup a system that will track students everyday based on the amount of time they are studying. The concept is: (I figure having records that are based on days would be easiest) 1.When the kids arrive, we can enter their student ID (I have created a relationship with another FM database with student info) This automatically fills in their name and phone number 2. Hi, I wonder if it is possible to have a a table as a field? I'm aware of the table function, but apparently that pertains having records in rows and fields in colums. I guess what I'm looking for is something akin to a repeating field for which I could have multiple rows and assign headers. Thus, each "row" would behave as an entity and "cell" of that row a seperate data item attributed to that row--all wrapped up in a single field. Thanks in advance. Like many others, I cannot figure out how to set up FMU. So help me please! Here is what I have: 1. FM server is hosting some FM dBs on a win2000 server machine 2. one copy of FMU 6.0 3. I do need web server connector installed in order to use SSL. 4. For the upcoming online db, there will be no traffic. I expect less than 10 users every day I know I need webserver box(es), my question is can I install both FMU and web server connector in one box? if so, how should I configure to connector? if not, is there any workaround? say install FMU or the WSC on the file server? I really don't want to buy two PCs, one for WSC and one for FMU. Thanks…

Dear colleagues I am trying to create a script that will backup my databases either one table at a time all or all of the tables at once. The problem is I do not know how to point to a particular table before I exported. If someone has a routine that actually unloads or backs up each of the tables please give me assistance. Help! No matter what I do, when I quit FM Pro 7, most of the time it hangs. The database window closes but it hangs before the program can quit. I've tried reinstalling, re-Disk-Warrior-ing my hard drive to make sure there is no corruption, removing all USB peripherals...what is FMPro 7 incompatible with?

Hey All, The new "Specify Find Requests" option in FMP7 allows the manual entry of static search criteria, is there a way to search on a global value. For instance, I want the user to enter the a SS # through a CUstom Dialog in a gloabal field, then pass this info to the FInd script using the "Specify FInd Requests". Is this possible. I know how to do it with a scripted "Enter Find Mode"=> "Insert Calculated Result" =>Perform Find, but I thought maybe there was a new possibility here... Thanks

I am trying to design a sophisticated find process for any table such as vendors, customers, etc. When the find returns more than one record, I want the user to see the list and click on a box to select the particular record in the found set that best matches the user's find criteria. As I read the Get(ActiveModifierKeys) function description in Help, only control-type keys are assigned numbers, not the mouse click. Any way to accomplish this?

I'm wondering about it's usage and if maybe how it's used might have changed from versions befor filemaker 7. So go to a layout, and initiate the relookup on the field that's the key for the relationship that the lookups get their data through. Does this only relookup fields that are on the layout? what happens if i have lookup fields that are from another relationship, I'd assume i need to do the relookup on the field responsible for that relationship too. We are having a problem with the mouse while in FileMaker Pro 5. It's fading in and out and quivering. We've replaced the Mac mouse with a PC mouse... Still the same problem. Tested the mouse in Quark and other programs and there is no problem. FileMaker Pro appears to be running slower also... Can anyone help?

ok so I came into a lab that was using FM and I learned how to get things working fairly decent. there were a few exisiting DB's and I was building tables off of those. In Windows the Escape key is giving me some grief. I would like in a number of situations to use the default button in a dialog box for "OK" or "Continue" but a user hitting the Escape key expects to get the "Cancel" option. I have therefore always coded the "OK" option to button 2, meaning the user always has to click the button rather than being able to hit Enter. Now that Filemaker 7 allows field input within a custom dialog box, the data is only entered via the default button, ie so if the user enters data in the field input, then has a change of mind and hits Escape, the data is entered into the field anyway. I've assembled a project with many duplicate pages that have the same graphics (tab bars, background, etc.) only to find that when I inserted the graphics the first time (waaaay before formatting there size and shapes) I must have checked the Store Only A Reference to the File box. So now I when I want to send out a copy to someone else they don't get any of the graphics. Is there any way to relink these graphics or am I screwed and will have to re-insert and format all of them ( a process I am not looking forward to).

I have created a database which stores lists of documents, that we have archived. There are 25 fields where users can enter what the documents are that we have archived in a certain location. HELP! In migrating my FM6 solution over to FM7 it seems that I have to specify the IP address in all scripts that use the "import records" script step if they are a client on a network with a remote server. This is terrible news for me as I use the solution for hundreds of different clients, all with different Server IPs. My question is: A.) is there a way to specify that I want the import to simply look for the file's name (locally or remotely) - this is how it used to work in FM6 OR B.) is there a way to make it based on a calculation that would go and look for the IP address of the server (if there is one)

Hey all, I have a question about scripting a set field command. I have two tables, Companies and Contacts. I would like to create contacts from the Companies table. I am using a company# field to relate the records, but I can't get the script to insert the current company# in the contact layout. If I manually input the company# in the contact layout, the contacts show properly in the Company/Contact portal. Does this make sense. Hi I have a File that has a "Job" Table. I have another file that has a "Cleint Table" and "ClientContact" Table. Relationship between Cleint and ClientContact is one to many since one client(mostly companies) can have many contacts. Relationship between Job table and Client Table is one to many as One Client can have many Jobs. Now the query, In the file that has the Job Table, I have a form that needs to display Client and Contact Names. Do I need to have a relationship between Job Table and ClientContact table to do it ? I have an ID system in my database which consist of 2 letters (always the same 2 letters) then numbers (which go up 1 increment for every client in the database....ie TB1, TB2, TB3 etc . i want to sort my db so that it is in order of numbers however I am unable to do this as the sort function rads it as text and organises it in order of TB1, TB10, TB100, etc how do i sort this?

Hi All, I am relatively new to FM database development, but find the best way of progressing is by asking the experts! . I am currently using Filemaker 6 and have bought the upgrade to 7, but have also bought Recruiter 1.1. I have not installed either as I am not sure that Recruiter 1.1 is compatible with FM 7? Can someone pls advise me? Since Recruiter 1.1 was just released I figure it might be compatible, but the specs still say FM6? Does anyone know if they are gonna release another version this year? Hi all: I am trying to move into more serious relationship design in FM7 and am, once again, having a bit of confusion adapting my Access/SQL Server knowledge. Using the example of a film production database: I have tables for Talent, Scenes, Locations, Film Info and Crew. Normally I would join all this data in a simple junction table with field names like: junctionID, MovieID, TalentID, CrewID - like that. This table would obviously hold the relationships between what crew and talent worked in what scene of which movie. All fine and well, but how does FM handle that?
