Would I just be able to use FileMaker Pro Web companion to upload my files on purchased hosting space? I have not even touched the Web companion yet. I am trying to get background info on where to start. Does my hosting company need any kind of FileMaker server software to be able to host my database? Do I need to purchase FileMaker Pro Instant Web Publishing software or is this something that comes with FM Pro 5? I have been working with FileMaker since 1989 but this is the first time it has been needed to go up on Web. Any advise would be most welcomed. Thanks, Paula

I have looked around and search for a way to do this but havent been able to so far, I apologize if it has already been mentioned! I have a database of 1800 records, for each of these records I need to be able to search a set of fields for the same data. I am using filemaker 3.0 with a server, windows xp. I have my data on a server, use "hosts" to open from my workstations. On one workstation the "find" button does not work. Nor does the enter key, or Menu/select/perform find. I have uninstalled the software, reinstalled it, and rebooted. What else should I look for? Any help would be appreciated. Don Petron

I have FileMaker Pro Runtime v3.0Bv5 installed on several PCs running Windows 2000 Professional connecting to a networked FileMaker Pro Server hosting a database. Almost all these PCs are setup in the same way and can connect to the database on a daily basis without any problems. However there are 2 PCs that the FileMaker Pro Runtime is having problems ruuning on. Everytime, we open the Solution.exe a little we get the following error: AdsBookings Sol.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. Hi, The problem that I am trying to solve is the following, if you have products with category codes then I want to sum up the number of products in each category and post it against each product. For example Product Code Product1 001 Product2 002 Product3 002 Product4 004 This should show up as Product Code Concentration Product1 001 1 Product2 002 2 Product3 002 2 Product4 004 1 I can think of how to do this using SQL but how can it be done using functions? Hello all! I've been working with MySQL for over a year now, and it works great for the online development I do a lot. But now, I've been contracted by a major research institution to do database work in FMP7. I've never used FMP before, and have been teaching it to myself over the past week while trying to complete this invoice. I've worked with an excellent third party''s FM database for a number of years, currently operating under a 9.2 environment with Mac G3's and FM4.1V2. We purchased the product with a number of user licenses. Unfortunately, the owner/developer of the database software has moved on to other ventures and has not upgraded their product to operate in an environment beyond FM5. Hi All, I'm a DBA but new to Filemaker... We're thinking of using FM7 to make a quick contact management app. I'll need to be able to enter people and companies, and various fields for each. The relationship from people to companies is many to many. Creating the tables/fields and relationships is easy... but I'm having trouble with the layouts, and how to create a simple interface for a many to many relationship in FM7. I have been set a challenge to build a FM database, that can replace a Goldmine Software situation. The database needs to be available on all the client machines when they are not connected to the net, or central network. BUT when they connect back up, they can resync the data back to the central database, so all the other client machines can access it. Presumably this has got to be a case of just the changed information is uploaded back to the central database, but I can not find a function under FM that will allow this. Ideas??

I'm writing an application to track health history for athletes. Essentially each student fills out an on-line health questionaire to which they answer yes or no to each question. If yes, they fill in the details. There are 90 questions on the current questionnaire but it needs to be modifiable by an administrator. I only want to retain the "yes" information for that student. So far i have a Student table and related Health History table. How should i set up the Questionnaire table so as to avoid lengthy scripts?

Hi all, I have been using a filemaker db to run school reports (via a runtime file). Previously, I have been able to get access to layout elements through using the master file password. Now I find that, still using this master password, I have limited access - no access to layout mode, define fields or relationships. There are no other master passwords that I am aware of. I am trying to create a relationship that will display all my sales files that have not been shipped. Setup: Table Occurences: "Sales" - source table is sales "Sales_Open" - source table is sales Relationship: "Sales_Open" - self join relation, relates back to the same "Sales" file. Hi, I did a search for this but probably got my wording wrong. I have a new field, called 'avtive record'. I want all of my 400 records to have the value of 'yes'. I set it up so new records default to 'yes', but how can I make all existing records take on that value? Is there a way similar to Excel, whrer you can have one value at the top of a table, then Fill Down to all the other records? I am new to FM6, but getting a firm grasp on its capabilities. I need some advice on how to perform this task. I have a user that needs a report from an existing layout. I could easily give her what she wants if FM would accept SQL statements. I'm a newbie to Filemaker, and our firm has a license to use Filemaker 5.0 Pro. I currently use a "poor-man's" database - an Excel spreadsheet with multiple worksheets. On one worksheet - I have a list of every "firm" that ALL of my clients to business with as a whole (lets say 100 firms). On the other 40 individual worksheets, I have all the fixed info for EACH client (phone, address, etc) and then, about halfway down the worksheet, a have a list of "firms" THAT that client does business with (lets say 15 or so, of the 100). I have a main database with relationships to 3 other databases. After converting these to FileMaker Pro 7.0v2 the main database no longer "finds" the related files. When the related file is called FM7 gives an alert message that the file can't be found. When I click OK, it lists all the files in that folder & I can choose the file that should be opened. After doing so the main database file will relate to this target file fine until I quit FM7. When I restart, the same alert message appears. What did i do wrong? Or what changes do I have to make in the scripts, etc.? Sure would appreciate any help you can give me.

I recently upgraded to FM7 from FM3. I have a small business that I run with FMP, consisting of 3 files - Contacts, Invoices and Products. I believe these came as templets in FM2.1. They are linked together via "lookup" (sorry for my lack of proper FM terminology) and worked perfectly until FM7. The file I am having problems with is Invoices. I had a repeating field that via lookup would bring over product name and price when I entered the part number. Once I converted it to FM7, only the first row would lookup the requested info - the other fields no longer filled in. I am recreating a solution in FM7, and I have to say I am about to pull my hair out. My biggest issue is it has turned my once super-duper PC, into the equivalent of an old 256 (or worse.. the old Apple II i used to have). WHAT THE - nothing drives me more mad than the slowness that has occurred with the shift to FM7. When dragging objects in layout mode i have to wait forever for the item to catch up with the mouse. lets not even start on the font rendering. Has anyone heard anything of a patch coming out anytime soon? I've just convinced them in my last project to convert from access to filemaker... Doesn't look too good!!!

Hello all. I'm sort of new to FM (used it quite a bit a long time ago). I'm working with FM 7 on a project and want to use a popup to select a value from a foreign table to assign an FK value in the current table. I can get this to work but not cleanly. Have been reading about FM7's ability to separate data from interface. I have been looking over the FileMaker tech brief doc "techbrief_fm7_foundations.pdf". In there I found a section regarding the interface and data file separation. I recently had to reinstall OSX due to getting hit by the one and only Mac virus last week before the 10.3.4 fix came out. I found afterwards that FMP 6 on the OSX side would flash up its intro screen and then quit. It still works fine under Classic. I reinstalled but same fault. We have two computers. Both of us have full accesss. The filemaker files reside on my computer. If I open the files first, my partner is allowed access. When my partner opens the files first, I am not allowed access. (I get the message that the files were not closed properly, etc.) Is there any way around this?

How do I do a "Find" in one table and then have that found set be displayed in a related portal? For instance: One table named Client, another Jobs. I use FM to store formulas for radioactive purposes...explaining the how in a textfield... I tried to use the greek signs alpha, beta, gamma in a textfield....together with the 'normal' letters...no way... In Word it's ok In Excel it's ok When I import the XL file in FM : alpha = a beta = b etc... any idea or workarounf for this ? Thanks

I'm certain I'm just missing something but how do I set a specific repetition in field1 based on the value in field2? In other words if field2 contains 6 I want to set repetition#6 in field1 to value X. I've browsed this board and searched docs/etc. but all I've found is the Set Field command which requires a hard-coded repetition #. I'm working on a solution for scheduling patient appointments on a layout that shows seven days at a time. I created a unique relationship for each appointment slot for each day of the week so that when appointments are made, the patient's name is displayed next to the appropriate time. This makes it easier to see exactly which appointment slots are available and how much time (space) is between any two appointments. I don't understand this problem yet. I have a file, and when I create a portal (with scroll bars) and place it in the header or the footer of a document, the portal is nearly unusable because of redraw problems: when I scroll using the arrows strings of bits stream across the portal, when I scroll by a page (clicking above or below the "thumb" of the scroll bar) most of the records are not updated on the screen. (You can see this because when you select a portal row, suddenly the "real" data in the portal is shown. Changing the size of the record w/in the portal changes what goes wrong, but in every case the portal always shows the wrong data after being scrolled. …

I have looked for a good thirty minutes in the online help and been through all the menu choices (I think) but still can't find it. Setting defaults (for formats): 1. My label fields always come up 9 point, bold, arial and I have to change them individually after the fact. 2. My text fields come up with effects-embossed; don't want that. Using IMac OS10.2.8. Up graded to FM7 and converting files from FM5. There has been some talk about FM7 slow speed. From my perspective the solution is so slow I don't want to actually put it to use in the company until there is a fix but I'll continue converting the scripts and upgrade features until the fix is available (assuming it will be). I wonder if my slow speed is due to using OS 10.2.8 and not the latest version of OSX, or I truely have a bug. Seeemingly simple question: I created a merge field (name) that consists of theses 5 individual fields: title, first name, middle name, last name, suffix. that would yield e.g. Mr. John Henry Doe, Jr. My problem is that on the layout, in layout mode this text box takes up too much space on my layout. When I try to shorten it with the "handles" it just creates a 2nd line so that the "volume" of that text box is the same. This takes up too much space on my layout, cluttering the area, making it impossible to add adjacent fields on that line. I use filemaker as my database from which I sell business leads. I have one client who only wants businesses in a particular SIC code who also has a fax number. I have many fields per record including SIC code and Fax number. I am hoping that someone can tell me a simple way without using scripts which I've never done, how to do these in find mode. I realize to enter the SIC Code in the SIC Code field, but I have no idea of what to enter into the fax field. I've tried "=", and "==" as well as "=" with the omit button checked, but none of those work. Is there a way to toggle into the define database dialog box without having to mouse click the drop downmenu bar at the top of the screen? The menu bar suggests a combination quick-keystroke of ARROW-COMMAND-D but this only brings up the ability to select an existing field to place on the layout. What I am trying to do is get to the Define Fields dialog box so I can create a new field or amend a new one. Can this be done with keystrokes or am I chained to the mouse? Merging a name: Field1: FirstName; Field 2: MiddleName1 Field3: MiddleName2 (some people have 2 middle names); Field4: LastName In Layout, I use the insert merge field function to put the fields together and I leave a single space between the inner merged fields. However, if the person does not have a middle name(s) I am left with extra spaces that make it look askew. Example: John Jacob Jinglehimer Smith would have the appropriate blank space behind Jacob and Jinglehimer. However, if his name is John Smith with no middle names it will come out John Smith with 3 blank spaces between John and Smith. I guess I could put no spaces between the merge fields and try …

Hello. I am a brand new convert from MS Access... Just got FMP 7 Dev out of the box and was exploring a little. I opened a couple of different templates and tried to double click on the area where you would insert a picture and the entire program keeps shutting down, erasing all my entries. I can't figure this out. Like I said I am brand new to FileMaker (I bought Dev 7 to hopefully learn and then convert my workplace from MS Access!). Hi, I'm a newbie trying to make a script and, after a few days of messing with it, am in need of some help. I'm making a Medical Record script for my summer camp kids which has 3 tables. Demographics, Encounters, and Medications log. My script uses the patients name as the constraining information and goes to each table, looks for the patient, and then prints the data. What I should end up with is the demographics cover sheet showing name, age, etc.; a list of all meds I've given and a list of all encounters. I have a fields with a sum of different values (e.g: FieldGTotal=field A+field B+Field C+etc...), where Field A,B,C,etc are regular numbers. In one field I have a pop-up menu which gives me the option to choose the percentage(ex: 10%; 15%, 20%). What I am trying to do is to add the percentage chosen from the Pop-up menu to the total of the "Field GTotal". I tried using some of the scripts (couldn't figure it out); I also tried to use the value list (sum of Fields A;B;C... + %Field)- but it didn't work either. Any suggestions? We plan to have a users registration database driven by Lasso. We will always allow data from Lasso into all fields. However, in an effort to acheive data consistency, we will manually authorize these user accounts. Certain fields should only contain data that is validated by a value list. In the event that a particular field doesn't validate we'd like to clearly identify it by changing to field style for that record to indicate so (perhaps bold and red). I don't think record-level formatting is possible, but perhaps someone has come up with a clever workaround. We cannot provide the value lists on the Lasso side due to confidentiality issues. Hello, I have used filemaker 6 for some time (being self taught) and have the update to 7. I have only installed it on my PC so far to play with. I am having difficulty getting out of the mindset of creating new databases for everything I need to relate (i.e v.6) Could someone please give me the brief low-down on how to better structure my db's or is there a whitepaper somewhere? On a Database Record we have 12 fields where we enter the number of Hours Worked on a project for an employee. Each of the 12 fields contains the number of hours worked on a particular stage of the design process. (There are about 1500 records in this database). What I need to do is reduce the number of Stages in the design process to about 7 by combining some of the processes. So, for example we will combine Fields 1 & 2 and also Fields 7 & 8. What is the best method to use to add the "Hours Worked" in field 1 to field 2 - for all the records.

I have a database with a number of relations. It is often convenient to see in view A the number of related records in table B (where A<->B is a many:many relation via an intermediate table). So I put a calcuation field in Table A Count (Table B::tUniqID) and this displays the number of related records in B. The problem comes when A is a Table Occurrance that references an table in an different file. I can't create the field locally (where the relationship between A and B is defined). Don't know if anyone else has run across this issue. I reported it as a bug, but maybe I'm missing something. Anyway, I have two tables (T1 and T2) and a join table (Jt). All relationships are by keys. JT records are created from T1, and the T2 key is looked up via a secondary relationship based on a global text field in the join table. (T2 key is looked up based on a text value put into a global field in the JT portal row. See attached .pdf. Global text fieldin JT is via a conditional pop-up list based on text values in T2.) Im deploying Server 7 and I see that when I try to open remote from my FM7 client I only see certain files. The files I see were multi user files when they were created in FMP6. The ones I cant see were created as stand alone. In Server 5 you could have server host single user files. However, I can't find that option in Server 7. Do I need to activate networking on the individual files now or am I missing the way that Server 7 hosts files with networking turned off? Thanks Ron.

Hello, I have spent an hour trying to find this info here, but to no avail. I am trying to help someone with the following problem. There is a FM5.5 server running 2 databases on TCP/IP. The databases are usable via remote TCP/IP when using FM pro 5 and 6 on windows, and in OSX on the mac. There are several OS9 machines using FM5 and FM6, but when trying to connect to the remote database xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, a empty window is all that is shown. The problem is the same on every OS9 machine running either FM5 or FM6. Thanks in advance for any help that will prevent me from jumping off of a small bridge.

Is there a method of doing this in FMP7, where it doesn't store the insert as a referenced link only? I spent a good hour or two playing around with it, and every time I inserted a hardcoded imagewin: link, it would break the link when the image moved like an OLE object. This is important for uploading files and automating inserting them into container fields. If there's not a way to store the image in FMP7 from a "Set field" command, or to be able to use the "Insert image" and have the values based off of fields. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Curious if anyone has come up with a nifty technique for displaying different portals (one at a time, in the same space on the same layout) depending on some variable condition. I have different sets of related information that I would like to show in one common area of a layout, but I do not want to duplicate layouts in order to show the different portals. Being able to hit a button (effectively, to change a global field) and then show a different portal in a "portal space" would vastly improve some layouts. I messed around with the portal "visibility" technique to try to do this but could not come up with a workable solution. Thoughts?

First some background. We have a multiple (>40 tables) file .fm5 database being served by FMserver to a mixed bag of macs and pcs. The server is an XServeG4. Twice in the last couple of months, I've seen some odd and rather frightening behavior: scripts with a "Set Field" step don't work properly. The step "Set Field (othertable::fieldN, fieldA)", instead of setting FieldN in the other table to the value in FieldA in the current table, sets it to a value taken from a different field in the current table. Is there a way to run a script when a window is closed. Running a script on close only happens when you close the last window of the current file. Im having a little problem with filemaker 7. I have a layout with a portal of records. When you click on the portal line a new window is created with more information on that related record. In the new window I have 2 buttons that I created(Save, Cancel). The Save button calls a script and checks the 2 fields that are editable and makes sure everything is filled in fine and then saves. The Cancel button calls a script that Reverts the record and closes the window and goes to main window. Is is possible to use a variable or field in the right side of the equation for the "Specify Find Request" option that is now part of the Perform Find Script Step? It seems like the only place I can enter a field is in the left side of the equation. On the right it looks like I can only enter an operator and a constant. I want to show a record's record number in one of its fields. I have tried using a calculated field set equal to Status (CurrentRecordID) but when I look at it in browse mode, nothing displays in the field. We installed DataDirect 32-bit sequeLink 5.4, but ODBC administrator doesn't identify the driver. (we examined the list, and found all drivers are microsoft branded.) I am completely baffled trying to configure the ODBC drivers. I have a web site that uses a PERL script and flat text file to server dynamic pages. I want to use FM7 to run backend operations off the database. I have the drivers installed, no problem. I go to ODBC Configure, add a new File DSN, follow the steps in the Filemaker Help, click the OK's to quit. When I go to FM and try to import from ODBC the data source doesn't appear, nor is there any way to navigate anywhere. Just the Cancel button. Back to ODBC configure...... Back to FM..... I am lost. Hello- Whenever I add or modify a calculated field, in order for it to take effect, I have to re-enter the fields that it depended on. Is there a way to make the fields update themselves automatically? For example, to find out the age of a client, I enter their date of birth into "DOB", then via an auto-entered calculation "Age" will be populated with the correct age depending on the date in "DOB". But, for records that had the DOB entered BEFORE I added the calculation to "Age", the "Age" will not update. Good afternoon forum, I have a database which I use to send out customer and vendor correspondence. Until now we've simply printed out the letters and faxed them off. Now that we have email addresses for most of our contacts, I'd like to be able to automatically generate an email with the appropriate letter attached as a PDF. I recently updated to 7v2 and there was little difference in launch speed on OS 10.3.3. I even manually ran update_prebinding from the command line to try and fix this. Yesterday I updated all of my machines to 10.3.4.... FM7 launch speed increased dramatically. Even on my G3 ibook 500, it launches almost immediately. Newbie question #1: The radio buttons in my database operate sluggishly. I click on the radio button and about 0.5 - 1 second later the button graphic changes to indicate that it is selected. Now 0.5 - 1 second later may not seem like a long time, but its enough time to make the end-user wonder if he/she clicked it correctly in the first place. I can reproduce this delay in a brand new 1 table file with only 1 field. Not sure if this is a bug in FM7 or a bug within my database - I can recreate this over and over. I have a layout that contains fields from that table (ids), related fields (codes and cost) and 1 related field from a table more than 1 table away (product name). When I add a record to this layout, the related codes and costs get filled in correctly but the product name does not. To make this appear I need to go to define databases (on the relationship tab), then double click on a relationship and then close the dialogues back to the layout and it magically appears!? I have a problem with the constrain found set script step. Basically, it worked for my client, and then they 'upgraded' (still need to know the version) and now the constrain found set is no longer an option in the perform find script step. Hello- I am trying to put together a calculation that will determine how many days it has been since an invoice has been submitted. I tried the following calculation: DayOfYear ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) - DayOfYear ( DATE SUBMITTED ) The problem is that it fails when the dates span 2 calendar years. Has anyone else seen this behavior yet? Freeze Window does not work in a script that also calls for printing in the script. See below. Go to Layout [Layout 1] Freeze Window Go to Layout [Layout 2] Print [Restore; No dialog] Go to Layout [Layout 1] Refresh Window As soon as the systems dialog "Printing Page 1 of 1" comes up Layout 2 is also drawn though it should not be. I'm not sure why, but using a 'Set Field' command when switching to a layout in one of my scripts will Set the field the correct value, and then leave the cursor in the field even though it's not allowed to be data entered in browse mode. Users can then type in anything and everything they want, and then when the leave the field it saves it. Unless I'm blind, I can't see the 'Exit Record/Request' script step they had in FM6. I could do a Insert Calculated Result in another field (I think, at least), but that seems rather silly.
