FileMaker Server v7 - v11

Discussing issues with Server version 7 - 11 ( .fp7)

  1. Started by BSkelding,

I'm trying to find a way to protect a folder from being accessed from the "Open" menu in a Filemaker client. Currently I've set it's properties to be hidden in the Windows OS. However, if a user knows the name of the directory or a file from the hidden location was the last file accessed it will be visible in the Open dialog box. Is it possible to have Filemaker Server hide or protect it but still allow it be accessed from scripts?

Could someone please tell me what type of harddisk is recommended for Filemaker Server 7 for Windows, with 20 to 50 users? The server is only for filemaker so the size is not that important. I don't think the database would exceed 1 GB. Thanks, H.P.

  5. I installed Server 7 and went into the administration with no problem. Since then I installed Server 7 on an XP client (as I see so far this is required for the new remote admin(?)) After going back to the server, I can't connect. I have the right IP but when I click Connect I get a long delay with no hour glass then nothing happens. I've closed everything on the client and tried rebooting the server. ??

Hi there, i'm attempting to set up a bunch of database solutions for my office of about 5 macs which are all on airport wireless. I have FM Pro 7, but wanted to know if I'm actually supposed to be using FM Server 7...which I didn't know existed until this morning. So, i downloaded the trial...and i'm a bit confused as to what to do with it now...basically, how do i access my database files and work with them now? Is each computer supposed to have FM Pro 7 AND FM Server 7? I'm embarrassed that this is such a newbie question...perhaps if someone could let me know if there is a basic user's guide for FM Server 7, that'd be cool as well.

  8. I'm having a strange problem. I'm serving a FP7 file. When I log in to the file, with the full access password, I cannot perform a find.. it tells me that I don't have the proper access privileges. But I have FULL access privileges, so how can this be ? What gives ? any ideas anyone ?? I called Filemaker... they said to try a different file.. hehe but... I would *really* hate to hear that answer a few months down the road.

Hi. I am going to be developing three separate databases that basically are identical. They are at three separte locations (possibly a fourth). We are not sure as of right now if we are getting the T1 line to tie them all together. The current plan is to run three separte databases and use a fourth 'master' to pull information from the three individual databases. Of course one would think, why not have one MEGA database and use the network for all 4. Well, first of all I am not sure if we are getting the T1 line, and I don't know much about handling that many people at once. Question (1). What do you think the best course of action is? 3 separte but equals, or on…

Hello! At the office my FM databases are hosted on an iMac running FM Server 5.5, I want to connect to them remotely. They have suggested that the best way to do it is to call my broadband provider and order a static public IP address that forwards to the private IP address on the iMac. Then, when I'm away, I can simply go to "Open Remote" on my FM and enter the public address. Under this scenario I have two questions: 1. They told me I have to configure port 5003... How and where do I do that? 2. Security: What steps do I need to take to prevent a "hacker" from finding the public IP address and getting in? I'm the only one that will know it and use it but I'v…

It has come to a time now that we need to get a box set or vla to allow us to have to concurrent users running the database in terminal services. Is it still possible to get these for filemaker 5/6? I am considering adding a very useful feature to the main company database, but this will push the total database size up to about 250MB. It's a large calculation field that needs to be indexed to be part of a relationship. Is this still ok for our uses? Or will there be a significant impact on performance? This server business is all new to us here, and we are currently experiencing very slow connectivity on all workstations (e.g. opening files from buttons also scripts running very very slow). Its not a huge database, i would say its not even a complex one neither. On occasions it can take 4 to 5 sec onds for a script or file to open from a button. We just put FMS7 on a Win2000 Server machine. I have followed the directions, but cannot connect to the server to set it up. I have tried localhost via the admin console on the server itself and via remote (which stated that remote admin had not been setup on the server). I did notice that the IP address for the localhost was different from the IP of the machine itself. I cannot set the machine to the 127.0.0.1 as it is a "loopback" address. I do not seem to be able to edit the localhost in the favorites menu of console. It may be that we have a bum CD, the admin pdf file cannot be opened.

I installed Server 7 and it assimilated this user account my home directory was not accessible it puts the server's home directory in Library. and I am assuming it is creating an fmserver user. When I installed it on my powebook I had no problems. Just make sure you don't have a user fmserver on your machine prior to installation.

Hello everyone, I am a little confused about the client server aspect of fm7. Is it a client server database or a fileserver with some additional plugins. I am less interested in having people from the internet access my system, than the internal network. I understand that all internet connections will be client server... what about regular network connections? My confusion stems from statements about plug in that will perform on the server rather than the client... what about normal queries and sorts? Or do you have to buy additional specific, expensive plug ins to take advantage of the client server aspect. Thanks in advance for your help. Jason…

Does anyone know how integrated FM Server 7 will be with Windows' Active Directory? Before I started with Server 5.5 (currently using it) I read about the AD integration and thought I could define FM permissions by AD user/group - obviously I couldn't. I'm planning to upgrade to FM Server 7 when it arrives - right now my FM setup doesn't have user-level security and before I go and spend 30+ hours building it into my 9-file system, I want to know if my efforts are worthwhile. My customer has been running FMP V3 under Citrix for a few years. Although this was not a supported combo, the performance was reasonable. We did have initial problems but the then H/W supplier managed to give everyone their own copy of FMP.exe. It worked. Recently, I talked them into upgrading to FMP V6. What a shambles! I won't describe all the problems but just recently things have become almost impossible. (Basically, losing links to files and using 100% CPU for up to 30 mins doing nothing.) Unfortunately, I do not know just what the H/W guy did with V3. FMP told me that we had to use Server with Citrix, even though I cannot find this documented anywhere. So my …

I stuck a dozen global text fields in a db being served. I put some test data into them while working on a script. Now, no matter what I do, every time this database is opened, on any machine on any platform (even the same machine twice in a row), my test data is back in the globals. I even made a little script to clear these globals I manually invoke every time I open it. If this wasn't temporary, I'd put this script as the startup script. I understand the local nature of globals on a served file, and now know that getting this job done is better with a one-record preferences file across a constant relationship (so the data goes into "real" fields that look and …

  76. Hi folks ! Is it anyhow possible to set up a local backup system for the situations where the server is down ? I mean a system where solution first tries to open database in server. If there is no connection it uses a database locally and later - in next contact with server - updates all new records to server. Is it possible to make a fresh backup to local disk every time the database closes (which can then be used if there is no connection to server) ? Arttu Version: Developer v6 Platform: Windows XP

  81. Hi - head scratcher this one. I'm running Fmserver 5.2 on Windows 2003 Standard Edition. It is working fine on our network but it refuses to display hosted files when connecting remotely. The router has been configured to allow UDP/TCP traffic on port 5003 - the clients seem to connect but it refuses to display any of the files in the host dialog. IS there something I should be doing on Windows Server? Or do I have to upgrade to fmserver 5.5 If anyone has any ideas I should be very grateful. I have a Filemaker 6 script that generates a TV schedule for our channel for the next day, but I don't know how to tell either a) Filemaker Server (which hosts the file with the script) to run that script, or : Filemaker to run any given script (including that one) at a certain time every day. In the case of :, well, I just don't know any way of triggering scripts to run except for during Start-up. Any ideas for where I can get help with either option?

The problem is that the two filemaker servers shut down at 3 AM to backup. The other server is still running so that after the backup and the two servers are back online, the FileMaker Unlimited server doesn't know that they are back online. I disconnected the DB's copied them over to the new server, re-ip'ed the new server to the old servers address and named the new server with the old server's name. The old server is offline now. The problem that I am running into is when a user tries to enter new information into a form on the Filemaker client program it states that "the field is not modifiable". Hi All, Is there any way to recover a damaged file remotely? I am not our server administrator and often work off site, often when I generate new fields or run scripts remotely, the server seems to freeze or my connection with it, this results in the file being closed down. The culprit file can then not be accessed unless I log a call with my IT support to go and restore the "damaged" file locally on the server. It's a real pain in the butt when my IT support takes several days or weeks to respond to a request...this of course results in some serious down time.

It is very little known that FileMaker Server can be run on freeBSD systems with the linux binary compatability installed. This gives you the advantage of a rock-stable, speedy server even on limited hardware. However, the installation process is not entirely trivial, since the FileMaker rpm needs to run some scripts in order to install the software. Following a brief description of the steps involved: 1. Manually create a user and a group namd "fmserver". I choose UID/GID of 5003, according to the TCP port FileMaker Server is using. The user does not have to have many priviledges. 2. If not aleady installed, install the linux binary compatability enviroment c…
