Hey guys! I'm having some issues with an aplication and though that maybe someone here could help me. I'm running an aplication that uses 17-20 different databases. It was created using FM 6, it is running on a windos xp os, using a filemaker server 5.5. the application is opened using a "start_up" scrip which initializes the file to verify the user. the application verifies the user by pulling information from a "users" database, and comparing to entered information. My problem is that if someone is logged into the databases, and someone else goes in, the system can not figure out what is going on..... o.k., let me see if I can explain this a bit better…

Anyone have an idea as to the best method for utilizing Multiple NIC cards. In the FMS Admin Guide it states: "FileMaker Server works with your network operating system's ability to utilize multiple network interface cards (NICs). You can use multiple NICs and IP address aliases to provide your clients better access to hosted databases."(pg 9) Is this right?: So I've got two cards, with 2 public & static IP addresses, my DNS maps the same hostname "fmp.server.com" to both IP addresses 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2. Does one of the NICs have to be set up so that it doesn't route traffic out? i.e. Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.255 Does my FMS have to have the Host Address as …

Good morning! Anyone know how to get a file being served on FileMaker Server to launch as a start up item? We have FileMakerServer set up on a PC with Windows 2000. It is serving mostly Mac platforms. I'd like my Mac users to be able to launch a served file at start up. On the Mac, when I "Connect to Server" from the Finder and choose our regular server called "Porky", after I log on, the server shows up on my desktop. And, thus, I can drag the icon into the Startup Items. Then whenever I start up, the server Porky opens up requesting the password with which I was originally logged on as when the icon was dragged into the startup items. From there I can have any Fil…

Quick question? Is their a setting in Filemaker Server which will startup and shutdown the Filemaker Server through the course of the day. The problem is when the Windows server starts it's daily back up it will not backup any of the databases due to Filemaker Server is running. What to do?

  6. [DOUBLE-POST] Someone had posted a question a while back (maybe a month or two?), asking what error 6 means when trying to access a file across a network. I can find no documentation for this error, and it seems to be an FM error rather than a Windows one, so i will pretend to be an error 6 authority. I think i have an answer, but i can't find the original post. So here goes (hope you're still on the forum, bud). I hope the pooh-bahs will forgive me for double-posting, but i'm not sure where this should go. I have a local file that looks for a database on the network called "Opener.usr". Last night, running that file, i got an Error 6. When i open the Ho…

  7. I work for an organization that is trying to rid itself of Macs...we have been working on a solution to house our numerous databases and web pages. We were hoping to house databases on a Mac running Server 5, and our web pages on a Mac running Unlimited. Other sections of our organization are utilizing this type of solution VERY successfully...however, since we are no longer able to get Macs, we are starting from square one attempting to do the same thing with Windows. Right now the boxes are running Windows Server 2000 and we are having LOTS of trouble loading Filemaker Server...any advice would be welcome!!!

Friends - I administratively closed a FMP 5.5 file on the server, removed it to my desktop, modified it, and put it back on the server. When I try to administratively open the file I receive error message "Error Occurred;unable to open file". FilmMaker says the resolution of this issue is; "The cloned database must be opened at least one time in FileMaker Pro to set the necessary attributes". I assumed that opening the file on my desktop would do the trick. However, I'm getting the same error message? The only solution I've found is to reboot the server (not a good way to keep friends). I could use some advice on installing FM Server. The manual is a bit sketchy on setting things up. I'm running FM Pro 6 on three iMacs, one of which is the host, where I'm going to install FM Server. Now will I be able to run FM 6 on the host computer and work with the database? Or must it be dedicated? As for installation, I take it that Server should be installed while logged in as the root user. So I'm guessing that the server folder must go in the root directory/folder along with the database files, rather than inside a User folder. Am I getting this right? Help!

The FileMaker Server Best Practices document recommends turning off file sharing and other unused services. In various discussions/forums I've seen different interpretations of this statement. In a windows environment (specifically Win2K Server), how _specifically_ does one 'turn off' file sharing? Does this mean not sharing FileMaker data folders, not sharing any folders (what about admin shares e.g. FMServer01C$), stopping a service, changing a windows setting? Similarly, one source led me to believe that simply allowing file sharing (no virus software, no backup software, no direct user access to files being hosted) might 'confuse' the OS and fool it into think…

The main thing I wanted, and thought we were getting, was for my users to be able to log in using their Windows domain username and password.

  54. All of a sudden my FM Server 5.5 has stopped serving my main database. All the other databases open automatically as the main one used to, but this one won't, on startup, or through manual selection. I checked the log file, which instructs me to open it in FileMaker Pro first. I have done this, both on the server and from another computer on the LAN (which is running Mac OS 9), but still server won't open this file. I have also run a recover on the file and server won't open the recovered file either. Any suggestions anyone? Version: Server v5 Platform: Mac OS X Panther

I have a small group of computers networked together using ethernet. We have used FM with the fastest computer as the host and the rest connected and it has worked great. Yesterday we installed DSL for internet. If I configure the host computer using DHCP it will get on internet fine but none of the other computers can see FM files. You can open a FM file that is on the host computer but if the host has it already open you can not connect. If I configure host using "DHCP with manual IP address" (Address never changes) FM works great but then you can not connect to the internet. One or the other but not both. At all times and with either configuration all the computers…

We recently had a prolonged power outage and the server's backup battery ran out and the machine, running OSX, powered down while the server was still running. Obviously those files opened could not be used and we went backwards to our backup, which luckily was only 8 minutes old. Not much data was lost but if the next power outtage happens at the wrong time, we could lose as much as an hour of data. In OS 9, I was able to have an applescript that would trigger the Server to shut down at the power outage prior to losing battery backup power, thus saving all the data. In OSX this is just not possible, as best I can tell. The server is not scriptable and even with r…

I'm currently hosting 5 files using FM Sever for OS X. So far things are going fine with the exception that for some reason one of the files is not being served. I looked at some of the possible reasons as to why one of the files is not being served such as 1. File permissions 2. The file is set to single user 3. The amount of files that FM Server can host. and all of them are set properly and I have checked all of them numerous times. The FM server automatically shuts down at a specified time to perform some maintenance backups and updates and when the FM Server automatically starts back up, one of the files is not being served. Two of the files open very slowly (15 seconds), and even more slowly the further away from the server the terminal machine resides (10 minutes). The two files are the largest files in size, but not records, and both have many PICTS in containers. The server is a G4 733 OSX running FMS 5.5 v4. To make sure it was not a problem with the machine I moved the files to our backup server, G4 500DP OSX and same result with FMS 5.5 v1 and v4. The fact that the opening was much longer at machines further away made me wonder if due to our firewall, but the slow opening has been seen with our…

Thanks, Riley. You are basically suggesting that I automate what I ended up having to do manually. While this would work, it bothers me that it seems like it wouldn't be very flexible. The way I'm envisioning it, I would have to predefine the funding source categories from the Service file in my find operation in the Clients file, so that whenever we added a new funding source, I'd have to reprogram the find scripts. I'm sure there's a more elegant solution, I'm just not coming up with it yet. Eric

From my Win 2000 PC workstation from which I administer the server I attempted to open the file. The server showed the file as available to be opened, but when I attempted to open it I got the message "Error occurred; unable to open file."
