A Windows client has the FMP files on one computer, but does most of the work from another computer on the network (each computer has its own copy of FMP). When importing a pic into a container field by creating a link to that pic, then closing and reopening the files, the client can only see the pic if the file is opened on the "server" computer. They can't even see the pic on the computer on which the work was done. :

I'm using FMP5.5 windows ver and I need to keep a link from my FMP data file to MS Access 97. When I create the ODBC link, Access says I have to many index's. As I need the indexes and have deleted as many as I could, I thought "Why not export all the data to a FMP 5.5 file and ODBC link to it?" So I created a DSN file for the new exported FMP file and proceded with my external link from Access. Here is the problem, After I select the new file source, Access wants me to select a Link Table and there are none! When I created the link to my original file it showed all the data files to choose from. What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it? Thanks.

Greetings Folks I am losing leading zeros - when I create a tab seperated text file, leading zeros are retained. BUT then I need to save the file as an Excel file - which means importing tab seperated file into Excel & then saving it there. (this is the format required for uploading my stuff to a specific web site) - at this point all my leading zeros disappear from view. I have tried importing data both as General & Text format - with the same result Any help appreciated Regards Sean O'D London

I'm just wondering if anyone knows how to obtain the path to a referenced image file in a container field. Basically, I have a customer who has multiple people entering data and some are storing references to image files and some are importing the image into FileMaker. It would be nice to be able to somehow tell whether you are dealing with a reference or the actual image on a record.

I have an FM 4 database of about 1400 records with a container field for a quicktime movie. The movies themselves are stored on 7 CDs, called CD-1 to CD-7. Under earlier versions of the Mac OS (8.1), if the CD in the drive was not the one for the current record's QT file, the OS would prompt "Insert CD-5". Under the newer OS (X) the error dialog simply says "Please locate file <filename>" without any path information. The path data must be held in the db somewhere, because it is still accessible to OS 8. Does anyone know how I can winkle the path out and stick it into a field so that I can build my own error message? Many thanks, Dave

I'm using FMP 5.5 for windows and I have a question that I'm sure has been solved or asked before. I would like to use one file maker file (Like a menu) to serve all utilitiy functions i.e. export and import into or from various data files. So I've created a Utilities file and from there I want to export data from my orders file, invoices etc... My problem seems to be that when I use the export from the script command it wants to export from my Utilities file and I can't tell it to use my Orders file. Thanks for your help! Jim

As a newbie (I haven't worked with FMP since '94) I'm tasked with migrating some existing FMP apps to a SQL based backend database. The ultimate goal here is to have ALL of our data reside in a single repository (MYSQL) without having to rebuild a significant number of our user interfaces. We have significant time and effort invested in building interfaces with with FMP and I'd like to keep them, only have them connect to MYSQL. I've tried using ODBC to connect, but it's not a real 'live' connection ... instead it imports the data into a FMP database, so I end up with a 'copy' of the MYSQL data. Since input is occurring at both ends (MYSQL and FM…

Hello all, As a newbi to Filemaker Pro 5.5, I have what I think would be a common request. I want to open a scanner program or any program for that matter i.e. (HP scanjet application) from within my file maker application. So the user can hit a script button that will open the scanner app and then the scanned image can be save to a container field all in one procedure. I have found external procedure calls for web use or email but nothing else. Any help is appreciated! Thanks, Jim

Hi All, I have recently inherited a database. One of the issues I am taking care of is an importing script. I have noticed that after this import is completed, there are multiple Replace commands to set data in other fields. I know that Replace in multi-user is destined to fail due to record locking. My question is, does it also have the potential to fail if the records are brand new (due to the import), and no users would be on those records. My analysis is, it is still possible these records could immediately lock, if say, a users database is on a record that has a portal that might relate to a newly imported record "all of a sudden". I…

how does filemaker handle directory structures (e.g., relative references?)... that is to say, if i have a file "Contacts.fp5" in directory c:foo and want to import from c:foo2, I would want contacts.fp5 to have an import step to import from the ../foo2 directory... does it actually store this other directory, or does it store "c:foo2" or neither?

Hello all! I've been lurking here for a week or so wildly consuming (as fast as I can without getting heartburn) the knowledge you have to give on FMP. This has been a veritable Kings Buffet (or rather 'Queens' Buffet)! So here's my first question to you. We are proposing a database driven web site to a non-profit that currently uses GiftmakerPro, a fundraising software solution. Is this program difficult to integrate with FMP? We give our presentation on Monday and I'm sure I'll need to be able to address this issue to the board. We will be using FMP 5.5 Unlimited/Lasso to develop their site with. Thanks in advance! Can anyone please explain to me how to link a FM Pro db into Access 97 (win98) using ODBC. How to add a header to an exported text document 1) I am exporting about 10 records or so to a text Document. I need a particular text string that always stays the same to be the very first item in the text document. Is there any way to get filemaker to insert the text string at the first of the text file as it exports. The string never changes. I know I could create a field in filemaker and enter the text string in only the first record and not the rest of the records, but just wanted to know if there was a more elegant way. I create large (>5000 images) databases of plant photographs, to be used across Mac and PC. Of necessity this means checking the "Store only a reference to the file" option box. Can the box's default be set so it is NORMALLY checked? It's not a trivial problem, because a .jpg file accidentally imported directly into Mac FM is decompressed and stored as a 2 Mb implant, rather than 100-200K. Proofreading 5000 records is a major job that involves putting the referenced graphics "out of sight" and testing whether they are still shown in the file.

I have a FileMaker Pro database utilizing subscripts and superscripts. When I export this file to a flat text file, the subscripted numbers turn into just plain numbers (e.g. CO2 for the chemical symbol for carbon dioxide). Is there a way to get this data directly into MS SQL database with super and subscripts intact? Any and all help is greatly appreciated, thank you.

I am already doing that. Maybe I can shed more light on the problem by adding this: I have a database with over 200 fields in it. When importing records back into the database, how am I supposed to match the fields up so the import correctly? I understand I can save it in a script but what happens if I add or delete fields later? I still have to find a way to correctly import at least once before I can save the import in a script. I have no way to tell what data goes into which fields when re-importing the information unless I can get it to come in the same way it initially went out.

When you specify a specific file for FMP to import and the file is not in the correct location, you get an error message that says FM cannot locate the file and the import cannot be completed. There appears to be no error code you can capture to deal with this issue. Can someone help?

I've got a VB program that currently opens an ODBC connection to FileMaker and finds a particular record. The program then pulls the feild data out of the database and performs particular functions. I'd like to start using the same program to create new records and change field values. However, the feild values aren't changing when the program runs, even though I can see that the feilds are being accessed line by line. Has anyone else run across a similar issue. Here is the code I'm using to access FM: Set cn = New ADODB.Connection Set rs = New ADODB.Recordset Set cm = New ADODB.Command cn.Open "Provider=MSDASQL.1;Data Source=FMTest;database=myDatabase.fp5 cn…

Dear Import/Export specialists, I want to import the Excell file into File Maker Pro 5.0 while creating field names on-the-fly. In other words, I don't wanna go through heartache of creating same fields in FM as in Excell. The scheme that seems good is importing it first into Access (this will create fields on-the -fly in Access), do all my querying in Access, and then export it into FM Pro. I have Local Data Access companion enabled, and File Maker Pro ODBC driver istalled. I created a Data Source in the same folder as Access table, but got an error: ODBC--call failed. Create Table statement is not supported. So from this I understand that FM Pro …

Hi, Would anyone have an idea what could be the problem: The application resides on the Mac OS X server, FM Server 5.0 One of the users is creating records using a copy of the application, locally on her Windows ME computer. She exported the data, sent it to me, and I imported it into the server-based application. The record in question has one letter in one word of one field(out of >400 fields)changed to a period. The user says that no one changed that particular field, and it happened as a result of the import. Since I still have the file that was sent to me, I re-imported it again - and the problem is not there. I was wondering if…

Hi all, I'm new to this list and a (newbie) user of FMP 4.0. From a client I got his fmp database. In this database he made use of 3 containers where he put images (jpg/gif) in. Now I want to export the whole thing to access or whatever. And you get it: where are the container files? I tried to automize a copy/paste action with a program called AutoIt, which copys the fmp image to the clipboard, pastes it into an image viewer and then stores it on my HD with a reference to the record number the image is belonging to. This goes well, but sometimes, when an image is missing, fmp shows only the error "can't find file name.jpg". Since this message…

Greetings I was hoping you guys could enlighten me regarding importing/exporting images in a container field from one file to another. I have a solution that will be installed on a laptop and a desktop. A field agent goes out to a location and snaps a digital photo. He loads his photos into the FM solution on his laptop, along with photo information. He then exports this record as a .CSV or FMP file and emails it to his secretary (oops, office staff) who can then import the file into the solution on her desktop. It appears I have it worked out until I notice that during the import, I am not able to import from or into the container field, because it does …

Anyone here know of a good way (internal or external plug-in) to batch import sound data into a container field? I have a bunch of VOX files I need to get into records in a FileMaker database and I can't see any way of doing it other than the manual way. I know I could batch up path and file name references and keep the files on disk (which, yes, would be the most efficient use of space) but I'd like them in FileMaker all the same. Any ideas?

Overview: I have constructed a DBMS, comprising of over 100 Filemaker Pro 5.5 databases managed via Filemaker Server v5.5. The purposes of the system is to be able to gather every single detail relating to a construction project of over 500 apartments and break it down to specific details relating to each wall, window, door etc. information relating to which is then applescripted into MiniCad for production of drawings. The client's LAN/WAN comprises of just Macs, at their offices, and an iMac in the construction site office which is connected via Remote Access to the main office. Problem: Being, after all, a construction site there are large power fluct…

Hi-I am in the medical field and I email reports to a hospital. I want to design a layout for my report that can be emailed to a pc/windows that does not have fmp but does have the office suite (including access). The layout would have at least 12 to 15 fields, and need to be printed. It would also have to retain its form. I am using fmp 5.5 on OSX 10.1.2. I usually send at least 15 to 20 reports a week. There is no way they can have fmp on their computers. If any one can help-please be very basic-I can be a little slow sometimes! I appreciate your time-Terri

Please excuse this seemingly basic question... I'm attempting to import the data from one data base to another, but the only data that is not being successfully transferred is from the repeating fields. I notice that the option "import values in repeating fields by:..." is grayed out so I cannot make a selection there. Any thoughts? I'm using an old version of Filemaker - 3.0. Thanks!

I've created a calc field containing the contents of a value list that consists of related fields from an external file. It takes a few seconds to come up, but that's another problem. The current problem occurs when I want to export the contents of this field. Unfortunately, when I export more than one record, the field doesn't take the time to recalculate for each record; as a result, the contents of the calc field from the first exported record gets exported over and over. Help.

The program that imports the CSV-file doesn't appreciate these ""'s. How can i prevent the ""-adding ???

Obviously, you'll have to create a new Master file as well. Then it gets tricky, since you have to create records in the new Master file with the necessary IDs. It's doable (I've thought of two methods off the top of my head), but my guess is that whatever you're really trying to accomplish can be better done another way. For instance, if you need a printout, create a leading summary part in the LineItems file when sorted by the ID field, put the ID field in the summary part, do the find, sort and print. That's just one possible alternative solution; there are many others. Chances are there's a simpler way to get the final output you want; I suggest working from that…
