Is there any way to trigger the validation calc when a user exits the validated field instead of when the record is committed? I validate two year fields with a calc, but the validation doesn't occur until the record is committed, in which case it's not clear which year field is being flagged as invalid. This is esp. true if it's the *first* year field and the record is committed immediately after entering the *second* year field (e.g. by hitting Enter key). I suppose I could specify which field it is in the custom error message, but it would make more sense in the flow of data entry to fix such problems immediately instead of several fields later. decker

Is there anyway of creating a global field that is kept in the database? I currently have someone dedup the database by a number 1 - 20000. But once the database is closed I need it to remember at which number it was at so that it can return to this? Any help would be great!

I have A simple Portal... Two Fields Years and Amount All I need is a script or a calcuation that can add 1 to the number in the above row... Meaning when someone types in the first row the first column will be 1 and they fill in the amount when they go to the second line the year automatically says 2 they fill in amount... I can not use the "@@" text b/c I want to do a look up later... Does anyone know how to do this...or am I doing it all wrong? Thanks Joseph

Ok...I know I have asked this before...but I really need some help everyone... I have two tables (FM7) table one is called "Main" table two is called "Policies" I have a portal on the main page that shows all of the polices for that contact. Hello All: I am having a rough day today because I cant figure this out: I have a field in a database that is a text field. It is pulling from a value list of Yes and No. When the user completes the search and the click on a button to start another search, i need to clear the check boxes in the table. They are for reference only. I can get this to happen by using setfield= "". Hello. What is the way to add month(s) and year(s) to a date. For example: - Add 1 month to a date 5/17/2004; - Add 3 months to a date 5/17/2004; - Add 6 months to a date 5/17/2004; - Add 1 year to a date 5/17/2004; - Add 2 years to a date 5/17/2004; - Add 3 years to a date 5/17/2004. I have two fields, field A contains inventory types, field B contains information about a particular inventory item. I need field B to contain a value (not empty) when Field A's content is equal to "item 1" but it can remain empty for any other inventory item that is not "item 1". I'm sure this will be covered somewhere and I would be grateful if anyone could direct me to the correct file or posts. I have a related file with all sportsmen (that's not sexist - they are all men!) list. Unfortunately the file gets large and I don't want to choose a starting letter in a second field to narrow the search in the name field. What I would like to happen is that when I type in the name field, each new letter narrows the names list automatically. Any help appreciated !

Hello I have a script below that finds the first place that 2 fields in a record are empty. I have my files in list mode and they show up as a kind of report. The Problem I cannot figure out is how to get the cursor to go to the 1st record when it is empty, I always have 200 records to start. The present script below gets the cursor to the right place (the first empty record ) but that is not the case when there are filled in records beyond record 1 and a second empty record was for instance, record 16 , the cursor goes to record sixteen but not where it should to record one. Looking up data from another data base with multiple related records is my challenge. My original intent was to set up one database (Location Tracking) for the details and upcoming scheduled changes of advertising for specific locations, and one database (Creative Changes) for entering the creative images/headlines/install dates as they change. Hello All: I have a database with several tables and a few relations that are doing one thing: Asking the user though drop down menus to select a bunch of criteria for our suppliers. Those drop-downs include a carrier, state, region and speciality. Once those have been picked, a 5th field is populated which tells the user how much money they can spend on a supplier for that criteria. As well as Win2K, I use OS 9.2. I frequently transfer stuff to my MAC and back again using ZIP drives or (one way only) CD-ROMs. For some reason I've never been able to fathom, my MAC insists on using ";" as the separator in calculations and my PC uses ",". FMP happily converts back and forth as I move files from PC-MAC-PC-MAC. That was until today! I used a USB Memory stick thingy to transfer a file from PC to MAC and back. The ";" have stuck and my PC FMP wants ";" in that file. It regards "," as errors. Other files are OK. Does anyone have any idea where I might set the separators?

I have a container field which can display a reference to a Word document--right click, Insert File. I would like to click a button (run a script) which would launch Word and load the document. I have read many things that say that using a related file is better than using repeated fields in most cases. So I have stayed away from them (this being my first venture into the filemaker world). Hello all, I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I'm new and having trouble finding the answer to this question. I have a database that contains computer service data. When the machine is repaired, the technician clicks the "complete" button on the form that displays the information for that particular job, which timestamps that particular work order. I lost electricity. I had worked 11 hours straight on the design and was so absorbed that I forgot to back up. Now, when opening the file, I get "FileMaker cannot share file because another User is already sharing files using FileMaker Pro on this computer." It works fine in every other regard, that I can tell. But I can't have it doing this all the time! I have dragged a copy of the file aside and have also 'Save A Copy As.' Not sure where to put this. Sorry if its in the wrong place. I searched and got no hits so I dread my file is trashed. I have 690,000 customers. Boss wanted them in alphabetic order. I so sorted then exported them, deleted all records, closed the file (and it say it was rebuilding blocks or something). I then imported the data back. Now, ever since I did that, every time I close the file it says it's scanning for unused blocks. It never did this before. It is slower than before - before I put them in order. Did I hurt my database?

Is there a point of no return with the usefulness of field indexing? What if I just index every field -- I have done this in Orders and ended up with a 700MB database. Will I receive a speed hit from the sheer bloat of the file and having o to reindex a lot of fields that cancels out speed gains from indexing? I have a flag that should be set to yes if a job status is "NA" and the current date is within 15 days of a requested date (Estimated Delivery Date). The flag that I am setting via the calculation is also the "key" field in a relationship to another file where a user can view all exceptions. Hello; I currently have a product database (photo catalog) and I'm having a difficult time using string functions to create a calculated field based on the 'File Name' field. I've named the product images with the product number (ex. rh0001.jpg). I'm trying to calculate the 'product number' field by stripping the .jpg from the 'File Name' field (ex. rh0001). I've tried the formula: Product Number = File Name - Right(File Name, 4) and I get 0001 as a result. Does anyone know how to just strip the file extension from the File Name field? So if this student bought homework 1, 2, 3, then I would check the box. But this student A has a brother, which has another fild called "family". Hi All, I have something like this ... Total Money = km * $0.80 for all old records. If i want to increase 80 cents to 1 dollars and i want to keep old records as 80 cents ... just for new records are 1 dollars. It means for new records Total Money = km * $1. I am converting a FM5/6 database to FM7. In the original I have a Calculation Field (Times used) that gets the "Count" of how many times a serial number is in a field (Serial Number). When I converted that one Database the same calculation works. This is the calculation of the converted file. "Count(Serial Number of Software::Serial Number) However, when I try to recreate that calculation manually in the new database it does not work. I am attempting to create a database that will accept accommodation bookings and want to have a field that will calculate the number of days that will or have elapsed between dates, for example. I need some real help...In more than one way... Here is the situation: I have a pull down field that automatically fills out address, phone, contact etc... information automatically. Does anyone know if there is any after market plug-in that can enable "type-as-you-go) technology? I have used the Clairvoyance script that is available in Scriptology, but I have found this to be impractical inside my organization. Wow you guys I hope this is an easy one Here is the set up: I have fields that I can enter information in these fields are formated for Numbers ($ & 1,000 seperators)...This is great...But when I bring these same field in the form of <<amount>> to my report they change into percentages (%). Okay I am so frustrated right now! I have made several databases over the last few years and just last week my boss informs me I have been doing them all wrong. Now I am self taught and my databases have all been working but I have never used the Auto entry function. Hi! I created 3 global fields: 2 Text (pop-up menu with value list) and 1 Time. When I enter data on any of them the same data does show up on all records as a global field is supposed to work... However, in the rest of the machines on the network (all Macs with 0S 9.2.2 and using FM server) the changes on such fields do not show up... The change is only reflected on the individual machine where the change was made. I tried quiting FM server and opening the db from one of the machines as the host (I thought it was a FM server issue where it wasn't sending those changes) and then having all other machines connected to it but same thing... What's the solution…

Hi I have a summary field which is a total of a calculation field. The summary field only updates after closing the file and reopening it. I tried changing the storage options but I get a message telling me I cant change the storage options as the calcultion is based on a related field ( which it is). any ideas? thanks

I experimented briefly on my trial version to see how the new feature of inserting files into container fields works. It seemed pretty easy but I couldn't work out how to open the files once inserted in the field. I'd imagine you could do this perhaps with a script linked to button or something?? Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, for storing multiple documents in a single record I assume you would use a repeating field? Any tips? FileMaker Version: 7 Platform: Windows 2000

I have a grand total for each customers order for each record. But now I want to also have a Supreme grand total of all of the totals in every record add up into this supreme total. is this possible ? Does it involve the summary parts ? I can not make heads or tails of the summary parts and if anything that they do.

I like the new ability to (at layout level) provide Undo to people. Too bad it wasn't at the field level (or is it?). I use Ray's Audit log for 7. It somehow tracks each field change (i can use it but don't really understand it). Why can't that information be reversed to provide our guys with a revert ability at the field level? New to FileMaker - trying to calculate fields based on two variables: for a school math assessment database I want to set some fields that will return certain numbers if two things happen - if the year is "xxxx" and if the grade level is "xxxx" then the certain fields will equal specific values. I started with a Case calculation for each of those certain fields, but then I realized that those results would only be good for one year. I didn't know how to make the results be possibly different in different years. I have a situation where I think the best solution would be to use a series of repeating fields. After searching/looking through many posts here, it seems that there is some sort of resistance towards using repeating fields. Hello, I am trying to have a price looked up and automatically filled in to a sales record in a portal. I have attached a graphic of a simplified version of what I want to do to help explain. I basically have four tables, a list of products, a price chart, a client page and one to record all sales. When inputting a sales record I want the price to be looked up after selecting the appropriate currency and product name from pull down menus but I have so far been unable to get this to work. Hi I need a calc to give me the week number preceeded by the last 2 digits of the year ( 2004 =04 or 2010 =10 but the catch is that I need the week to be from each Wednesday through Tuesday and change dynamically. Ok, so I am fairly new to FileMaker, but so far have had great succes in creating a database to manage a create orders for my business. However, I have run across one small problem with Get ( TotalRecordCount ) I have defined a field to assign each order a unique number using an auto-enrty of the calcualtion Get ( TotalRecordCount ). This ensures that each new record is assigned a unique number when it is created, based on the number of records in the table. It works fine as long as I am browsing ALL records. I have put the following into a calculation: Year ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) & Case ( Length ( Month ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) = 1 ) ; "0") & Month ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) & Case ( Length ( Day ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) = 1 ) ; "0") & Day ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) Since today's date is 4/29/04, I'd expect the result to be 20040429. FileMaker returns: 200404029. I have checked that the result of "Length ( Day ( Get ( CurrentDate ) )" is 2, NOT 1. What am I doing wrong? I've come across a function that must be in FM but I can't seem to find it. In a layout I have three fields for the creation of an unique order number an dthe fields are; 1 the year field 2 digits 2 the week field 2 digits 3 the order number What I need to get working is that the year field gets filled in automatically only with the last two digits of the year. I don't want to turn indexing off but I am unsure how indexing works in the background. Does it keep information from a long time ago indexed even if it doesn't exist anymore? I have a group of databases that are extremely slow on the server (lots of records, lots of indexing). I am just wondering if it is possible to clear the indexes in the background or to clean them up. Could indexing slow down the databases like this after time? Is there a program I need to view this kind of information? Thanks! Marcelle

So I thought I'd post a vindication of two potentially useful contexts for them (beyond storing global graphics, and other uses I've seen experts recommend). Hi there- Although I've used FM for several years, I've never progressed beyond the pre-scripting (and other bad*** stuff) level. I have a timestamp field that is auto-enter upon the commiting of a record. What i need is a field that returns the previous day of the record. Not 24 hrs. If someone commits it on 4/28/04 at 12:01 AM, then it should say 4/27/04. I looked through the date functions and didnt see anyway to extract the date from a time stamp field so i used: LeftWords ( timestamp ; 1 ) this returned the date of the timestamp value. So, i added a - 1 to the calc. Leftwords(timestamp ; 1) -1 But this gives me a ? in the field. I hope this is the forum for this question. I'm having difficulty resizing groups of fields. I have no difficulty resizing a field with the object size box. the trouble is, I can't seem to resize multiple fields. Several fields will widen to the new measurement while others will widen slightly. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to add sequential numbers to a document. The numbers need to go from 0001 to 9999. I have the numbering all figured out but, I can't figure out how to make the zeros print without adding a decimal point. (Ex; 0001, 0002, 0003 etc.) On the Mac I changed the field to format as decimal and set the fixed number of decimal digits to 3. Then I deleted the "." from the decimal separator box. Not very sophisitcated but this worked fine and just left a small space where the decimal would be but, when I view and print the same file on the PC a small square appears where the decimal should be! Can ya help me out??

I have a question about how unstored calculation fields work. Do unstored calculation fields take any storage space in the database or hard drive? Are they only stored in RAM on the clients computer. Do the calculations evaluate at the moment they are displayed on the screen. Does FM Server (5.5 or 7) store any of these unstored calcs for faster access. HI All, Cyborg Sam was great in helping with my last problem so now I'm wondering if someone can help me out again. I have a database with 10 fields each of which have a drop down list of several different options. I have a date field which is a projected project end date. I have a calculation which calculated weeks to that end date. I have a 2nd calculation which highlights the row a color depending on how many weeks are left. My problem is that we allow projects to not have a projected end date. Both the records that have "0" weeks left (Basically this only applies to records with projected end date equalling current date) and no date are showing the same status.
