Hello. I noticed that it is possible to import pdf files into a container field as a quicktime sequence. It then allows to use the Quicktime buttons to navigate through the pages of the pdf document. Really nice to allow users to view the pdf content. But I was wondering if it would be possible to allow users to print the same pdf document from FMPro, without having to export the pdf file from the container to their computer, then opening it and printing it from Acrobat. Any idea or all-made solution is welcome. Thanks.

I recently upgraded from FM Pro 4 to 7.0v3 and have lost functionality in the "Modification Date" field for each record. In 4.0, the Mod. Date & Mod. Time (2 fields for search capability) were automatically updated for that record when any field in that record was changed. In 7.0v3, the above is true; however, the Mod. Date & Mod. Time fields, in all 900+ records, are updated to the current date/time at FM startup every morning. How do I get the Mod. Date to function as it did in 4.0? Thanks in advance!

I have a field named "Checked out?" I would like this field to have a value of "Yes" if 2 other fields meet certain criteria. The criteria is, field "Checked out by" filled in and field "Returned Date" NOT filled in. This is what I see as a way to see if an item has been checked out or not. I'm in the process of converting our paper based record system where I work to a FileMaker database but have come across a problem when trying to replicate the way we assign unique codes to each client/record. Currently we assign what we refer to as a T No, 235G for example where 235 is the number of records made from the first of Jan that year and the G is the year (G currently =2005). I don't know where to put this but I'm assuming I need a calcualted field. I need to show on a report the latest quote amount for a job. There might be many quotes for one job, some which are declined and some which are accepted. I was thinking that maybe I need to use the max function to find which is the latest date and then get the related quote amount but I'm not sure how to go about it. thanks

I have a field that via a script, pastes a value into a field on my main layout. When using the "If" function, Filemaker will not read the value. EX If ((Grade="A"); "1"; "0"). The field contents are equal to "A", yet the formula still returns "0". Any idea's how to fix this? I have made sure the calculation results match the output. Hello. There's been a lot of talk about cross platform, networked viewing of linked/referenced images in container fields. A simple solution would be to use URLs for file paths, just like your web browser. But it appears FMP does not support URLs for container fields. Is this correct? Hello there, i'm requiring your help yet again. I have a database of 313 graduates that lists their current area of employment via a value list i.e. archival, a/v tech, multimedia etc. I would like to have a layout that calculates and tells me how many of my graduates are in each field. i.e. Archival - 1, A/V Tech - 8, Multimedia - 16 I thought that it would need to be done by some sort of if loop, but i'm unsure how to go about implementing that. Hi everyone, In one of our portals we have a running list of books issued out (numbered). I'd like to create a 'not returned' letter for the prior book. Is there a way to do a calculation on this? For example of the portal please see attached. The top record is the most recent issued book, the second is the prior. I am developing a database for a customer. He wanted me to be able to calculate tax based on a price put in a field. That was not a problem. The problem now is he only wants the tax amount to show if it is resale, but not if it is wholesale. So I was thinking, that I could put a resale button and a wholesale button. If it is resale he just clicks yes in the field and the tax amount will be figured out. Not sure how to do this. I have a database which lists inventory which is ready to be shipped on a scheduled date. I would like to be able to highlite (in a red font) material which is marked as not shipped and has been in the system for more the 24 hrs. is there an easy way to do this? at the moment i am thinking about performing a find and looping through the found set to color the text i need. and when the shipment is marked as shipped looping through again to return the color to black. If anyone has a better idea please let me know.

When I am in the Define Database window I can see how to setup a field and then duplicate it within a table and then change its name. There can be quite a few settings for some fields and this saves a lot of time. What I cannot see is how I can duplicate a field to another table? Also, my FileMaker 7 book seems to allude to the ability that you can duplicate tables but I cannot see how this done either. I wish this application's interface was more intutive it would save a lot of wasted time.

I am using container fields to play back mp3 sound files. When simply assigning a button to goto the field and perform, the file plays and a quicktime-style progress bar appears in the field. Perfect. (- though a timer style counter would be GREAT) When accessing the same action via a script however, only the "script playing" icon appears until after the sound file completes playing. There is no way to access the database at all until the script completes. Is there a way to do this? Can scripts run in the background? Thanks Greg

Hi All, I know this has been asked in the past, but I searched the site and can;t find a straight forward answer. I have a database with several thousand records. One field is called AT Number. By design, many records have the same data in this field. It is important most of the time (makes sense honest!) but now I have a need to only display 1 occurence of each of the AT Numbers. I've searched the Forums for an answer to this, but didn't find what I need. I have a file with 20 related tables. Each table has a field which captures Get(TotalRecordCount) at the end of the day. I had created a layout which had the name of the table and the field mentioned above and it printed nightly. All worked well. Hi, I'm trying to run a report showing sales people's commissions on different orders, sorted by the sales person. Sometimes the sales person gets multiple commissions on the same order (different types of commissions: primary account holder, referral, etc). I have a subsummary in the report showing the total commission amount for each sales person. I also want to show the total revenue of the sales involved, but I can't simply sum the revenue field because it would count the revenue for each commission, including commissions on the same order, thereby doubling the revenue. I have a record for each part, and the portal shows various transactions that have occured, such as recieving and dusbursing and the quantity involved in each transaction. I want to create a 'balance' field that shows how many parts we have. I want it to add up the quantity of parts we received and subtract the quantity of parts we disbursed. I have an application where users are able to import photos into container fields. To keep overall file size down, I want to be able to validate these fields either by the size of the file being inserted (i.e. <1MB) or by the resolution of the image being inserted (i.e. 640 x 480 only). Hi there, I have a container field on my layout page, I go to browse mode, and then drag & drop my mp3 into this field. Then I set up some text on the layout and right click to specify button where I then do the select field and have it choose that container field, and check the box where it says perform or whatever. My problem is that I then put my layout in browse mode, and click the text, but I have to have that container field on the layout for the script to work properly. If I try to remove the container from my layout then the script doesn't work. But I am distributing this to lots of people, and don't want them to see the container field. So I made it real…

Trying to ad soundfiles into container fields. I would like to have the container field holding the sounds, so the soundfiles are not neede anymore. With Quicktime insert the container field, it just uses a link to the file. Only with Insert Sound... does the container field contain the sound. But this is not an option for me because the microphone of the computer is then used and then the quality of the sound really decreases. Also try recording a 1 sec. sound this way, it becomes atleast 3 seconds, depending how fast you click. I've been trying to Paste the sound in the containter field, but I can't get it to work at all. Hello all, Ok so i have a nice formatting calculation on my surname field. So when you put in smith It will capitize it to read Smith. However being from ireland we have a lot of second names like O'Malley and O'Brien. Now the proper function really doesnt work with this guy for obvious reasons it only caps the first letter when it should do it with the first two letters. Hi, I have another newbie question, it's probably answered already, just couldn't find it... I have a file containing workshift data, defining each workshift by following fields: StartDate, StartTime, EndDate and EndTime. Duration of a single workshift can be anything between 2hrs and 20 days. I'm trying to create a calculation field, which would show the hours that elapse during Sundays (00:00-24:00) within each workshift. Is it possible to set up FM PRO 7 to require a data entry person to enter data twice to make sure that the data are correct via requiring a 'match' before they are stored? And is it possible to make the first entry of a data field hidden or asterisk'ed out similar to password entries on websites, to prevent the operator from being biased by the first entry? Thank you! That's simply it - is there a way to deny text formatting to all fields within a database? Data ENTRY is allowed, just not formatting, it MUST stay the way the layout has described it. I've set validation on some fields for size and font and color, but there are 100+ fields that need these options and not only would that be tedious work (though creating a database can certainly be so) it also does not allow me the option to deny alignment formatting, which is one of the most important ones - any suggestions? I know I can separate them into different columns in Excel before importing, but is there a way for FileMaker to do this? In the "Show Custom Dialog" box via the script menu you can enter fields. However there doesn't look like a way to make the field a pull down value list, etc. Is there a way to do this via a calculation?

I know this should be easy but it is making my head hurt. I have a start and end time with a date that returns number of hours worked on that day. Not sure where to post this question: I would like my FileMaker runtime application to open to a specific size of W-831 H-579. The actual database maximizes itself when the program is opened and will appear 'perfect' if the actual runtime window is that size. Otherwise there is tons of white space. I tried to do this via a script and also with the shortcut icon (put in a parameter to size the application). Not really sure what to put in the script OR the shortcut target field to make this work. Hi gang, I am trying to make a calculation field that will show initials. If a record has a single person, its easy, I just use the left function for the first name and last name. The problem I have is the record has 2 people Only the first name field is populated with an &. for example Terry & Archie. so I tried the following calc. It doesn't work, it only shows "T". Ok I have an auto enter calc that works perfect. We have codes, if the codes isn't statused as being used,( inactive, available...) the appropriate message appears in that field stating the code is basically invalid. Great! But I want to use validation to prevent the record from being committed if the code is not of the correct status. I have tried a few things like validation with requiring strict data type of numeric... but that doesn't work and it screws up my whole autoenter calc. Can this be done... This may be real easy to accomplish, but I'm not sure how. I am trying to input latitude and longitude coordinates into a field, and need to put °, ', " after the numbers. I want to make it so that when I create a Merge Field that the symbol will show up, but I don't want to the symbol to show up if there is no value in the box. Currently I have this as my field. Latitude: <>° <>' <>" it shows up as 34° 54' 1.52" when data is entered and ° ' " when nothing is there. My goal is for the symbols to not be on the form if numbers aren't inputted. Hi - I'm wondering if there is a way to build a calculation field based on whether or not two fields have matching text. In brief, I have several fields in which a composer's last name is entered -- these fields related to a layout that lists, vertically, the composers entered... I am hoping that when the same composer is repeated immediately I can leave the second field blank on this list because it is redundant for my purposes to repeat the name again. I have developed a Dispatch program for a small Wheelchair van service. On each record an incident number or run number is assigned to that record. Right now the number goes in sequencel order. What they want is this the record number to reset to 0 at midnight everyday so they can start over with run number 1 unless a trip has been assigned to that day. Here is what I would like to do. Make the runnumber the Julian Date plus the next run number (example 256001...256002...etc). The only thing is they put in trips days ahead or even months (example 12/31/2005 for trip runnumber 365001) so I would need to match the Julain date to the date of service they put in plus the run…

Both fields are a popup menu and can contain one of the following the values: 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 I have a third field that needs to contain the start value, all the values in between and then the end value. ie if 'fld1'=2 and 'fld2'=6 then fld3= 2,3,4,5,6 (with or without commas) I have tried to create a series of calculations, but I am stumped. I am looking for suggestions and a possible solution to my problem. Here is the goal: I manage a small club, and am creating a database of bands that has all of their contact info, a container with a picture, and a portal to another database that contains all of the attendance and sales data from everytime they have performed at our club. What I want, is another container that contains their music files that I can listen to as I am looking at their data. Hello, I prefer to have dedicated layouts for data entry, and these layouts are usually displayed in separate "mini-windows". Then, after doing some custom validation, I transfer the data into corresponding non-globals. Also, the data entry is done in a separate table, where each logged-in user has his/her own record. I was just curious if other developers do something similar, or if I'm overcomplicating things. It's just that in a multi-user solution, I prefer to keep users out of actual records as much as possible. Regards, Sean

Hi, The situation is the following: DB A ***** Field 1 - unsorted calc Field 2 - unsorted calc DB B ***** Field 3 - portal match The relationship is from DB_A(field 1) to DB_B(field 3) and named "DB_A_B" Field 2 = count(DB_A_B::Field 3) I need to be able to summarize field2..but it is not possible because it is a dynamic relationship (Field 1 is unsorted as it uses a global field in its calculation). Creating a value list is also not possible for the same reason. Any suggestion of how a summary can be accomplished?

Hi, I have a question for anyone out there that can help me. I created an auto-serial number in an edit box that would create a record number for a set of five values. Now, I would like to have one value have a certain set of numbers (say 1 - 100), while having the other four drop down values have an auto serial number value of say, 101 - 1000. I tried doing a calculation with an if statement and a case statement. The problem that occurs with either of these methods is that the four combined values I'm trying to create each have their own individual set of values. Graphics that I've embedded into a FM file in container (not global container) fields are randomly disappearing. The solution consits of around 10 databases, including a "design" database. The "Design" database contains the graphics. I haven't used global container fields because all this is running on a server and I don't want to have to take the server off-line every time I want to permanently add a new field and graphic to the "design" file. So all files, including the design file have a "link" field which is a global field with "1" in it - thus creating a relationship no matter what record you're on. Our product expiration dates are only month and year but I need REAL dates. Users type into text field (ExpDateTxt) as 03/8 or 4/10 or 11-10 etc. First is the month, second the year. This needs to be converted to real date of that month/year and the last day of that date. I've come up with this but it feels convoluted. I want to take into account slashes and dashes and whether they enter a leading zero. My thought was to strip slash/dash, replace with space then use simple LeftWords() RightWords(). Please help! I am trying to create a calculation based on If a date field is >= 12/31/2005 then call it [specified text]. However, it doesn't return any results. "Review C" & "Review D" I have an unstored calc that gives todays date: "Today" I have another field "Next Review" that is an unstored calculation resulting in a date based on the 2 review fields (it figures out which of the first two date fields is next on the calendar). I have a script that inserts the date and time into 2 seperate fields formatted eg. date "Mon, 15 Aug 2005" and "10:35:42 PM" respectively. I have a calculation that concatenates them with some extra text ie. "Last Modified: Date @ Time bla bla. The problem is that although I have used the functions TextToDate(Date)/Time etc... the calculation displays the date and time in the wrong format ie. Hi there, In my database I have a field "Student Number" that auto-generates a student number using the Auto-Enter Serial Number function of that field. However, not all entries into the database are enrolled students, some are merely inquiries, applicants, etc., who do not need a student number. I also have a drop-down Value List for the Inquirers Current Status (i.e. Enrolled, Accepted, Under Review). Hi all, I have a need for a calculation that rounds up positive numbers to the nearest n, with n being equal to whatever value the user enters. I wrote a calc for it that seems to do precisely that but I just have this nagging feeling that it's "taking the long way around the barn". Can anyone simplify this? Hello, I am trying to do a date calculation which requires the date result not to be a weekend. I work at a school and our database contains all the dates of contact between us and the students (ie. 07/08/2005 Sent Info Package). I would like to have a field which automatically shows me the next contact date. The next contact date is based on the reason for the last contact. So far I have this working perfectly (i.e. if the last reason for contact was an info package the next contact date is three weeks after). I'm using the following calcualtion to determine the pay for an instructor based on the number of days a student was enrolled in a course before he/she dropped. This works, but what i can't figure it out is how to make it ONLY look for those students who have a date in Date Dropped. the way I have it setup now it looks through all students. If (Date Dropped - Date Enrolled >= 60, 50, 25) I'd love some help.

I'm having a problem getting the evaluate function to work properly with textColor. The basic format of what I'm trying to do is case (isempty(OverRidePrice); BigSumOfOtherStuff; textcolor(evaluate(OverRidePrice);rgb(255;0;255))) The field result is a number. It works if I set the field result to text. How can I get it to work with the field result as a number? I've tried messing around with getAsText and getAsNum functions, but without success. Hi: When i try to view JPEG files (on a Mac) that are inserted by a user on a PC using "store only a reference to file" option. The Image is replaced by a "The file cannot be found filename.jpg". The server on which the file resides is visible on both platforms. I know this is a problem with how file references are handled on each platform, but I am at a loss on how to fix it. The PC's are on Filemaker 7 running XP. DB is hosted by the Mac.

My Inventory/Ordering/Shipping system has been running pretty well for a year now on FM 7. Recently it's been slowing down a bit, and I've got to hunt down the problem. I've made a few network improvements, and changed some calculations, but I think the big problem is with my design. First, the number of records we're talking about isn't outrageous: there's about 9000 invoices, with 15000 line items; 700 products; 500 customers. Hi Guys, Im working with FMP 6 on the Mac, and I have a question regarding serial numbers. I've got a client with 16 workstations, and files are hosted on a Mac OS X machine with FMS 5.5. I have a field called Jobnumber which is defined as an autoenter serial number field. Everytime someone clicks on new, they get a new record with a new number. My client says that he has a couple of records with the SAME number (-in other words the automatic serial number doesn't work).
