I am presently setting up my surgical office with electronic medical records (EMR)on FM 8 pro Advanced Windows (5 pack) and have it networked in the office (front desk to the examin rooms). The combination of Scansoft's Dragon Naturally Speaking (voice recog software) and a wireless microphone putting data into FMP is awesome. I was wondering about the ability to connect the office computer running (FMP) to my home computer (FMP) and visualize the same records and making changes to the database. Of course security is an issue with medical records. If anyone has any suggestions (VPN, communication software...) it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all

I have been using FileMaker Pro on a Mac since 1996 so I am well used to it. Since I upgraded to Version 7 I discovered that I needed a new manual. i have bought Schwartz & Cohen's "Bible" and have constructed their tutorial Address Book. When I entered my homepage in a button "Open URL" I found that it would not open any site to which I need to login. Is this usual? Also, I still cannot use Dial Phone as I used to prior to version 6. Why is that, please? Terry

I have read several posts regarding files not opening on FMS 7/8. I have a similar problem. I have been developing many solutions in FMP 7/8 Developer, hosting them on a 7 server (Win 2000 Server SP4). I just upgraded that machine to FMS 8. All but two files opened as normal. One (1.66GB) opened after I opened it in FMP and allowed it to fully open. The remaining file (1 GB) will not open, even saving compressed would not help. The event log shows that the FileMaker Server Helper cannot be started (error1003), but that was FMS7's helper, which I set to manual start. Max Files hosted =30, have 15 now.

I set a back up schedule but every time it hits the backup time, it disables itself. I have the enable clicked but it "unclicks" when the time comes to backup. So far it has never backed up with filemaker server advanced but it did backup with filemaker server before I upgraded. What's the scoop group? Anybody else having this issue?

I was wondering what you guys think of the encryption built into filemaker server advanced 8...Do you think that this is secure enough to allow users to login without the use of vpn? We want to make the users jump through as few hoops as possible, so we would like to stay away from vpn and definitly not use citrix, remote desktop, etc...

Is there a way to have FM Server 7/8 send email instead of the client FM Pro in a hosted database? We're currently running FileMaker 7 Advanced Server, and there may be a need in the future to have a hosted database be able to generate email upon certain actions. I need the email to be sent from the server, not every client that would be connecting to it. It seems like this is doable via Custom Web Publishing, but what about via just ordinary FileMaker networking? I've dont this in the past with Tango (and FM 4), but my current employer doesn't want to use Tango or anything similar, so I'm pretty much stuck with whatever functionality FileMaker has built in...

Looking for someone to possibly help out trying to sort through the mass amounts of server errors i am getting using Filemaker advanced 7. I called tech support and they blammed it on the Xslt. So I need to have someone look through the xslt pages and find any errors that might be causing problems with server. I got a new server, running win2003 and FMS 8. Has of today I'm hosting 80 databases with an average of 5 users per database. The most users that I have had at the same time is about 30. I got 2gig of ram. I'm wondering how the system would perform if I had 200+ users logged at the same time. How much ram should I get more for that scenario. Is there a rule that I don't know about (like a terminal server requires 80 megs of ram per users) fo FMS8. Please don't answer has much ram as you can get!!! Fred.

I am having a heck of a time figuring this out. I can access my Filmaker Pro 6 Server from a Mac remotely and local with no problem however from a Windows copy of Filemaker remotely I have no access. My copy of FM Server is behind a firewall with the ports 5003, 50003, 50006 being forwarded to the server. Are there additional ports that need to be configured for Windows? Any help would be appreciated.

I am running FM8 on one client station and FM 8 Developer on another. I have FM Server 7 on a dedicated Imac G5. This system is running a task management application for communicating between my office and my cabinet shop. The default screen people see us a columnar type layout. Records are color coded depending on current status. If the task is "In Process" the color code is yellow. If there is some urgency to the task the font color changes to red. The problem I am having is updating the screens. When a status has been changed on one station it does not necessarily upgrade on the other station, without someone hitting a sort button on the other stat…

We are using FileMaker Server Advanced 7, and are utilizing Instant Web Publishing (iwp) for users to access the databases. Is there a way to tell who is using the databases? If the client had FileMaker Pro 7 installed on their desktop and performed an Open Remote we can see the users who are on through the FileMaker Server Admin tool. Second question, our user forgot to log off when using iwp and now the record is locked. Is there a way to unlock it without having to close and re-open the file? We also noticed that the locked record could be accessed through Open remote. Now that isn't so good if we have users accessing the database through the we…

Hi, I have a simple database with some table. One of these tables is called Countries: it contains a list o almost 200 countries. Basically I just tri to order this countries by name: -sortfield.1=name&-sortorder=ascend. So i decided to restart my engine and now it works fine again: no changes made to xslt file or to the query …

I am very new with FM and FileServer. Sorry in advance for a silly question, but I can't find a direct reference to this problem. I created a database on my (client) computer with a container field that has pdf file links - actual pdf files are not in the database. I installed FileServer on our Server computer fine, loaded the database on the Server and can access the database as a client no problem, but when trying to open the pdf file link, it cannot locate it. Any easy answer to where the pdf files need to be or how I tell the server where they are? Thanks!

One of our users is running FM Pro 8v2 on a G5 Mac with OS x 10.4.5 FileMaker consistantly crashes when the user puts their cursor into a date field that has a Drop-Down Calendar on it and then clicks somewhere else (e.g. desktop, another FM window, a button, etc.). If they click a button it will perform the script up until the point of 'user-interface'. Meaning that it runs fine until the user has to click or type something. This only happens on the Mac and with FileMaker. Has anyone else seen this or have any ideas what could be causing it. I haven't moved the machine, changed memory or anything so I doubt it's hardware related. Thanks

I'm running Mac OSX and Filemaker 7 Server. I have a LAN with 4 computers attached. I have successfully gotten a FMP7 network up and running and all works well. My question is, how can I access the database files from another location such as my work? Can I "open remote file" from my work location? If so, how does FMP7 know how to find the data base...through the IP? If you can help, that would be fantastic. Thanks, Orbiter

Hi, I am having a strange problem with the Server Advanced 8v2 on Mac tower. My main file never passes the consistency check. I have to turn the consistency check off to get it to start up. The log just says that the check failed. I performed a recover on the file and got the same thing. If I put a clone of the file with no data in it, it starts fine. It therefore something about the data itself that is causing it to fail. It is a large file of about 4.5 Gigabytes. Does anyone have any ideas? Scott Wright

Hi, This question is related to the topic below: http://fmforums.com/forum/showtopic.php?tid/171863/post/185201/hl/scripts+odbc/ Bear with me while I give you a little background on the project: I'm an ASP developer working with a Filemaker developer on a project to build a public website that draws a lot of data from our client's FM database. Whilst I'm pretty experienced with Access and SQL Server, I'm a complete idiot when it comes to Filemaker so the whole project has been a steep learning curve for me. The client's FM database has been migrated to a Windows Server 2003 box running FM7 Server Advanced. We're upgrading to FM8 Server Advanced in…

Has anyone figured out how to backup to an attached firewire drive (La Cie)? The filepath is valid (filemac:/LaCie d2 117 GB/Server 8 CQI Backups/) but no scheduled backup occurs. I am trying to install the FileMaker Server 7 Advanced 7.0v3 update, but I am running into to some barriers. I am getting messages that there is not enough disk space. This is a windows 2k server with two disk drives and we have FM Server 7 installed on the secondary/ d drive because the main drive that runs w2k had less than 500 mb of drive space when we ran the initial installation. I know that the FM server updates call for approximately 100 MB of free space on the hard disk, but I thought it refferred to the disk where Filemaker resided-- in this case the d drive. It seems that the updater is looking at the c directory which there is now less than 100 mb of space. I…

While they perform adequately (albeit slow)under OSX, when we try to stop the server using FM Server Config, the dialog box says it is shutting down (and that it may take a few minutes, the server never stops. It can take half an hour or so before we must force quit. It is consistant across all of the Macs. Why is this?

On the Filemaker web site it says that FileMaker Server 8 Advanced is an enhanced version of FileMaker Server 8 that lets administrators securely manage and deploy shared FileMaker Pro 8 and 7 database files over networks, intranets, and the Internet. This leads me to believe that FMSA8 advanced includes the Server 8 software. However the installer I have for advanced only has the FMS 8 Web Publishing Engine installer. Did our boys get the wrong thing? We have Server 8 as well, should I install that first then run the WPE? Sorry if this seems elementary but I'm confused!

Hello, I'm gettin' mad about a new (!) filemaker server 8 strange behaviour.. I jsut installed all the web engine (server v2+ WPE + advanced 8 v1 patch) in a Windows server web edition (i Know this is not the proper version of Windows server for FM 8.. but just go on.. I have a surprise for you) and it seems to work for 3 maybe 4 minutes (yeah! minutes!!).. then the CWPE process start to allocate for it self almost 100% of CPU.. you know.. the server simply becomes unusable, CWPE stop to do its 'job', and my site is unavailable. So, I checked the OS version requirements and I founded that the proper version is WS standard edition.. well, we got it too (all pat…

Dear FM Forums, One of the main reasons we want to use Instant Web Publishing is so that we can have a vendor portal. We have thousands of vendors, and we'd like to have an interface where they can login and update some of their information. What are the options for using IWP to give limited access to thousands of users, only a few of which will ever access at a given time, and none of which will ever access the FileMaker solution directly? At first glance, there would seem to be two options: make a FileMaker Account for each vendor that will access the system, or make a generic account that all vendors login with, and implement within the solution a custom set …

I have a server running Server 8.0v2 Advanced where I have had the schedule running hourly backups 24/7 followed by a 15-minute offset cronned shell script to backup the hourly backups to a different server in zipped form. However, yesterday, I found that the schedule which was running fine up until 2 days ago had mysteriously switched to running only at 9:00pm and then again at 10:00pm before jumping ahead to 9:00pm the following day (as shown by the event.log)!! As a result, practically a day's worth of data was lost when I had to remotely transfer the data to a developer for overnight amendments - a lesson not to be forgotten! I was wondering if there is any …

A very unusual situation that I've come across. A client has Server 5.5 on a Windows 2003 server, hosting 32 files, and acessing the database with FM Pro 6. When the database is launched, it opens 15 of said files. The others are only open on the workstation(s) when user specifically wants to. There is one file that, when opening, always gives the error 'Communication with host has been interrupted.....'. I have a number of databases that run across a WAN, using FileMaker Server 8 Advanced. Unfortunately for some users access can be very slow. To make it easier/faster for them to quickly look up an individual record, I would like to encourage them to access the database via IWP. On log-in, I intended to redirect them to a simpler page. But I can seem to find a function within FileMaker that allows my opening script to know if the person has logged on using their browser (or IWP), rather than as an ordinary client. I would have thought there would have been a "Get" function for this purpose. Does anyone know I can identify that the person is using IWP?

Sounds weird, I know... -) while users are working, suddenly one user's cursor changes to a coffee icon (user says "coffee icon", so I assumed it's Java) and then there's only one way out on that user's machine - shut down... they do not use ANY other apps and is not connected to the Net. This happens at random during working on a Windows XP small network with 2 users connecting remotely to another hosting the very simple FMPro7 datafile. This may have already shown up in another topic around here - if it has, I apologize for repeating. I have a coworker who would like me to develope a database for them to use in a certain area of their work. At first, I was just going to develop a runtime application for them. But then they thought maybe someone else might want to use that same database. ...So we got to talking about sharing. But - I've never learned about that, so I'm clueless. So I guess my question is: What do I need, in order to create a file on my computer so that others can use it from their computers too? Do I need something other than FileMaker 8 Advanced? Is it simply settings I need …

I'm using FMPro 5.5 with FMServer 5.5 in a multi-user environment. Making modifications to our application is always a pain, because I have to either make changes and do testing in realtime on the system while it's in use (dangerous, if the changes are at all complex), or I have to isolate a copy of the database files on a computer not connected to the network. I can simply copy the files to my local computer, and then disable the network connection, but the instant I re-enable the network connection, I risk having the application accidently open one of my test files (even though the active copy is already open!) I suppose there's an expensive "Developer's Edit…

Is there a way to control how many client stations can have access a record at one time? Hello, I don't know if this is the right place to post this or not, but here goes... Specs: • FM8 Server (v2 update) on a dedicated server(W2K Server). • Users using FM8 (v2 update) on WINXP SP2. User workflow: • User creates new record with script1 on layout1. • Script opens up 3 additional layouts and each layout creates a new record. Problem: Only the user who created the record can see the new record for layout1 AND the 3 additional layouts. The remaining users can only see the new record in layout1 NOT the later layouts. Temporary Fix: We found out that if the user who created the record completely exits Filemaker, the other users…

The only thing I can think of is that this file has been converted from FM6. Does anyone know any settings that would cause this not to open? Maybe something that I need to do in order for the file to be shared? I can think of nothing, all settings are the same as any other file that I am sharing. But this particular file is the only one that …

In Dreamweaver 8 i use a dsn connection to conect to a file maker 8 database which works. However when i look at the tables they are listed as null.tablename. I can still see all the fields of each table despite the null at the front of the table names. When i try to create a recordset it gives me an error that reads: [DataDirect][ODBC SequeLink driver][ODBC Socket][DataDirect][ODBC FileMaker driver][FileMaker]Table Not Found: null. My server is running Windows 2000 SP4 with MDAC 2.6 SP2 I'm using the "DataDirect 32-Bit SequeLink 5.4" ODBC Driver Can anybody help?

We set up a Windows 2003 server, and I installed the Filemaker Server 7 v3 then the Advanced Server 7 v3. I enabled the External accounts in the FM Server and added my global groups in Define Accounts and Privileges. The global groups follow a naming convention, one is named FMDTSBUSUBRW. It is not nested in our Active Directory, when I add myself to the group I am correctly authenticated. But when I add my user to the group, and logon as her, it fails with "Your access privileges do not allow you to perform the action." I am then prompted to enter login credentials, I enter her password and I get the same error. If I enter my credentials, it works! The domain cont…

I've created a solution and I'm deploying it to 25 customers over the internet (25 different db)with 1 to 4 users each that can be connected at the same time. I'm looking for more speed and want to maximise hardware/software performance of my future new server, my question is: Two servers with the same configuration (same number of hosted files & same number of users),running only Filemaker server 8, one with win server 2000 SP4, the other with server 2003. Would The one with Win server 2000 SP4 be faster?

Hi, I'm new to FMP and have developed template that I want to share in a group shared folder on an OSX environment. However, whenever anyone (other than the person who placed the template into the group shared folder) attempts to access the file they get a read only message at the intro and when they attempt to input data they get "field not modifyable". I've tried playing with the options under sharing (tcp/ip) to no avail. Is there a quick fix? Pete

Can someone please walk me through setting up my FMS? Am working with a Mac ServerG5 with OSX 10.4 Until now I have been opening a single File on the server and sharing it remotely. There are about 5 users at any given time, so it works OK. But the FMS does not seem to be running. I cannot connect to it via FMS Admin. When I try to connect, it gives me the message that the FMS is not running and would I like to start FMS and then connect. I press yes and it thinks for a moment, then asks me again. We do this dance for hours. Can someone please help?

I have two files, main.fp7 and reader service 2.fp7. Both are hosted with FMServer 7. Whenever I go to a related rcord in one file OR open the other file, the original file closes. This screws up some import functions I'm trying to do. Does anyone have any ideas why both files won't stay open? The perplexing thing is that if I access the files using Filemaker 8, both files stay open, if I access using FM 7, they close. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hi all A customer has FMP 5Server running on a Mac. After a controlled shutdown due to an expected power down, Filemaker Server refuses to open FMP files. In FMserver a database is selected to open, but nothing happens. No message on error or anything else, it just ignores the open request. When we tried to open the files from a standard FMP, the files open without any problems. Any ideas? Regards /U

Is it possible to save a copy as in FM Server 7? I am hosting a file from a FM 7 server , but cannot save a copy as remotely from a client machine. The "save a copy as..." option is grayed out in the file menu. I am trying to find some preference that wasn't set properly, but there doesn't seem to be any. If I recall correctly, I thought the "save as a copy" option was possible in FM server 5.5.

I'm having major performance problems with Filemaker Server 8v2 serving to both FM7 and FM8 clients, on a particular layout. The layout which this effects is relatively basic. It contains three fields, (a Record ID, and 2 text descriptions). It also contains two portals, one with 5 text fields. the other with 8 text fields. There are no calculations fields at all on the layout. When there are only one or two clients connected to the server, finds on this layout runs fine. However during the day when there are 20 or so users connected to the server, moving between records takes 20+ seconds from one to the next. The keys for the portal relationships are b…

PCs on our domain are able to log in without any problems. However, when I connect a Mac to this server it never prompts for a username/password and does not show any available databases (only accessible databases are visible). Does anyone have experience in a similar configuration that would be able to help me?

The problem in a nutshell: I can do all the finds that I want in my database when I open it locally in my FM7 Client (updated to v3, on OS X Tiger), but when I open it via FMNet on a Windows-based FM7 Server, some of the finds that worked on the client give me "no records match that set of requests." Two paragraphs of background before I describe the problem in detail. I've been developing a moderately ambitious database project to keep track of computers, who they're assigned to, the issues with them, etc. I wanted a way to keep track of the history of assignments of a computer (e.g. computer X was assigned to person A from 1/1/2000 to 8/1/2000, then then to pe…

I'm having a problem with remote users intermittently losing their connection to my FileMaker server. I'm running FileMaker 8 Server on Mac OS X connected to a business-class cable Internet connection. All of the clients are running FileMaker 8 under various operating systems. In the databases, I've disabled idle disconnections for each privilege set. On the local network, we have no trouble with users being disconnected. However, when users access the server remotely over the Internet, they experience seemingly random and intermittent disconnections. This occurs with clients both in the local region as well as those connecting from our London office. I rea…

I was reading a post which implied that some files could be stored client-side to speed things up. I assume this is with the seperation model... Could someone please describe how this would work if I made a solution with 3 files (Data, Logic, GUI)? Would a user basically be able to store Logic and GUI on their system, and then upon opening these - somehow access the data file remotely through the host? Would anything change if the host is off-site (WAN)?

hello all, I updated an Apple PM g4 from 10.2.8 to 10,3.9 OS X version. I scheduled some tasks on my cron tab (in fact the same cron tab used on 10,2.8). This cron makes a 'rendundant' back up of the back up files saved in a Volume (a remote apple g5 machine). this is the path: /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/FileMaker Server/Data/Backups the terminal application autofill help me to reach this path but, when I try to move to a sub dir (we can call it xxx) with cd xxx command, the out put notify me that xxx doesn't exists! (I know this is not true). I try the same thing on a 10.2.8 eMac and the same path works properly!!! Could you help me to un…

Hello, I am a FileMaker beginner--we are a nonprofit in Boston and our FM designer is currently in San Francisco. He made modifications to our FM files over an FTP online system. He had to use a FM version 8, while we run on FM version 7. When I reinstalled the new files into our server system, the office was able to read the files...but not modify them. When the FM server is connected we get an error message that reads "FM cannot share files because another user is already sharing files using FM Pro on this computer." When the FM server is stopped, we are able to read and modify the files on the server computer--but no where else. Please help! …

I was hoping the FM community might be able to give some feed back on a error my fileMaker 5.5 server has been giving me lately. I just ran into a problem where a Find (for all records with a null value) would find one "ghost" record (so there were N+1 records listed). The status display would show "Found: 11892, Total:11891". I recovered the file and it seem to have fixed that issue, but this it the first time this has happened, and I recently updated from FMSA7v4 to FMSA8v2. Anyone else see this problem? Is it a problem in 8v2? Seems like a deadly / nasty bug to me...

Hi all, Just installed FM 8 Server Advanced. On of the new features is the ability to easily edit the home page. We were running 7 and I had edited this page in the app package. It was an easy setup, and I was able to drop my custom page into the IWP folder. The problem is - with v8 - FM replaced the browser username / password authentication with a webpage form. After just getting off the phone with FM, I've been told that this page is not editable. It is ugly and could possibly be confusing to my users. It has a blue bar at the top that says INSTANT WEB PUBLISHING and it tells you to enter your name and password the the database "xxxxxx" and th…

I'm sure this has been talked about ad nauseum. We're in the hardware business (www.dealexpress.com) but we also use FM8 to run the company. I'm on a quad G5 but our server is an HP Blade system, dual Xeon MP 2.0 2mb. I'd like to know what the fastest server platform is, Mac or PC, and if dual (or more) processors is important. Cost is not an issue for us.

We're experiencing a problem with a FM7 application being accessed via a Citrix Metaframe XP server. When the remote user connects and views the FM7 app in Citrix, the "sort records" command is disabled, although we are certain that command is enabled in the privileges for that user. We're wondering if there is a firewall issue, as this application is set up on a network in a school environment. The user is connecting from outside the school network. When connecting via Citrix inside the school, the "sort records" is available, but outside the school network, the "sort records" is disabled. If this is a firewall issue, we're not sure what to do about it. Citrix serve…

SSO/Ext Auth was working perfectly until now. Our .fp7 files were moved from one SAN to another. The FMS Application is running on its own machine. FM Server8 v1 was not touched. Now when you try to open the Main Menu file, it prompts for Account Name and Password. Ext Auth works fine once you re-enter your window account name and password. Help! My users (42 of them)are used to SSO and automatic FMP access. Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Hi All, We have Filemaker Server 5.5 and clients that use Filemaker 6.0. There is a Filemaker file that is 430MEG. The end user claims nothing has changed for over a year and that they never had an issue until now. For the past month the end user tells me it takes them 5 minutes for this file to open. I confirmed this by trying to open the file on my laptop. Once the file is open everything is fine. I contacted Filemaker Tech Support but they don't support Filemaker Server 5.5 or Filemaker 6.0 so they were not helpful to me. Could anyone provide any suggestions I could try? Thanks so much, REM

I just finished creating a solution (or updating an existing solution) and after moving it to FMS Server 7 Advanced a new feature I've added to look up user has stopped working. After watching the "Companies, Contacts & Details - Optimizing your data" from ISO FileMaker Magazine I included in my solution the ability to type all or part of a users name in a Global field, then pressing tab should show only user containing what I typed. This is done with a portal and 2 calculation fields. If I have the database open local from my computer this feature works perfectly but if I open it remotely from FM7 Server (version 7.0.1) it does not work. Any guess as…

Hello, I've seen this question posted in a number of forums and I haven't seen one solid reply or example. I realize the Filemaker Server Advanced CWP capability is new from Filemaker (as it replaces CDML for FM7+) but it has been well over a year since it has been available and I have yet to see a good working example. I also realize that Filemaker is embracing the web's future in XML. I've purchased the Filemaker Professional Series Foundation Series II documentation from Filemaker and Beginning XSLT by Jenni Tennison. I've been developing with Filemaker 5.5-6 for about 2.5 years. I am serious about making CWP publishing work for my organizat…

I recently came to a new place running Filemaker Server 5.5 on a Windows 2000 server. I need to make adjustments to the server configuration, but something is wrong with the server management tool: when I try to click on any of the 6 icons in the main view, nothing happens. I would like to just reinstall FM Server but they have lost the CDs. I suspect this is caused by the FM Server directory being moved from its original installation by someone else in the past. I'm not sure what I can do to fix it. Presumably I can alter some file or registry entry to make the server management tool point to the right place, but I don't know where. Has anyone else ever encount…

We are running FM Server 7 on a VPN with 2 users in remote locations using FM Pro 8 to access the files on the server. After approx 45 minutes of being connected and working in the files, FM Server appears to be diconnecting the users. This occurs whether they are adding data to the files or just browsing, so it does not appear to be an idle timeout issue. The VPN connection is still active when it occurs, so it seems to be Filemaker related. Can anyone please advise if there are any settings that we can change to stop this? Thanks

Hi, I've got the following problem on windows: I have full path to the main FileMaker executable file (e.g.: c:Program FilesFileMakerFileMaker Developer 7FileMaker Developer.exe) and need to automatically determine, if this FM was installed for all users or for actual user only. I know that installation for actual user stores data in HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry and installation for all users stores data in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE registry. But which keys should I be looking for? The solution I'm looking for should work for all versions of FileMaker and for runtime solutions as well. For the mentioned example of path, the registry key which should I look for is: HKEY_LO…

I'm writing a job catalogue for a graphics workgroup. It's going to run on an Xserve and be accessed by three Macs. For each of the job records, I'd like to create a folder link which will work by: 1. Click button 2. Switches to Finder, opens the relevant folder I'm happy for users to link manually to the folder when they create the record (but it's an advantage for them to do this via the GUI rather than typing, or cutting and pasting, the path). What's the best way to do what I want? Are container fields the best approach, or is there another way? Can I do it with built in FM functions, or do I need a plugin (such as the Troi file plugin)? We currently serve out about 8 solutions, half of them relational, using FM 5.5 server on a G3 tower running Classic (9.1). Works great. I am retooling a G4 Panther server to run FM 8 server to make the transition to OS X, but still need to run 5.5 for the next few months anyway. In experimenting with some of the 8 solutions (which are working well), I noticed a significant slowdown on the 5.5 side, and I suspect it caused 5.5 server to lock up. Does anyone know if it is ill-advised to run two servers on the same network? I was under the impression that the protocols had little in common. Thanks for any ideas. Dave

hey all, sorry if this makes no sense. We have filemaker pro 5.5 and the host machine seems to run a different script when we open the db than the guest machines. What i need to know how to do is create a new host script as we are mocing machines. And then how to create a new guest script so that they have to wait for the host machine to be up and running before they can access the db. The manual doesn't appear to be helping me here.. any guidance would be appreciated. Not sure i am on the right track !! cheers, RF

Hi all, Happy New Year! Long time no visit to the forum and am pleased to see how much it has improved in it's look and useability. Has anyone had any experience in Filemaker solutions which can either work on a PDA (using Mobile) or/and a laptop which then syncronises with the Filemaker server using a remote access (VPN)? I am writing a sales order system for sales reps out on the road. Most of them will have laptops that are not connected to the Internet whilst on the road. Some will be lucky enough to have PDA's and a copy of Filemaker Mobile. The eventual destination for the data collated by the sales reps will end up on the database which i…

Hi, I recently rolled out a Filemaker Pro 8 server (running on an OS X client machine). We have 6 databases being hosted there with none having more than 3 or 4 concurrent users. The databases are shut down and backed up nightly. In the past when we were using the non-supported/non-recommended method of keeping our databases on a network volume (panther server) and running them from there, one of our programmers would make a copy of the database before she made revisions to it. Now that I’m hosting the databases properly, the programmer wants to know what she should for doing development work. She’s not comfortable with making changes and having them “stick” imm…
