Printing

I have 3 fields which I want to slide up, reducing unused space. The text in each field is variable, but will together they always add up to a set number of lines. The 3 sliding fields must appear above other objects/fields in the printed report, but in order to accomodate all the text that could appear in any one of the 3 fields, I have to make them so big that they extend below these objects in layout mode. Consequently, I set them to slide up, also reducing the size of the enclosing part. However, they won't slide past/above these objects in preview mode. How do I get around this?

Hi all, I'm new to FM so please bear with me if this is a silly question : We're running FM off WinXP with a HP N2300 printer. When we print a report (batch of pages, say 20+) each page previews on the screen before/whilst it's spooling, consequently 20 pages take about 3mins to print and lock up the PC. It does finish scrolling through the pages before it finishes printing but I wanted to know if FM has to preview each page before printing or can I set it to just print the whole batch, as it would with say a word doc. As Subject: How to set Layout view in Landscape mode? The orientation is in Portrait mode while I view it on body layout. Is there a way to change the layout view in Landscape?

Is there a way to group a sub-summary part to the body so that a page break does not happen _in between_ those two parts? Here's my problem: I have a sub-summary part that serves as a title (let's say "Fruit") for a number of related records ("Banana," "Apple," "Pear," etc...). The thing is, since that sub-summary part is so narrow (only tall enough to hold the word "Fruit"), it often appears alone at the bottom of a page, leaving the list on the next page untitled. Any advice or help would be much appreciated! PS: Please forgive my cross-posting this problem in this and one other FileMaker forum--I need help!

I thought I would never have this problem with FMP 5.5. We were recently running FMP 5.5 on a Mac OS Tiger eMac with 400 Mhz processor. The printing was real slow, to a HP Direct Jet then a thermal label maker. 10 Labels took minutes. We upgraded the computer to an 1.9Ghz and 512MB Ram iMac. The printing speed has been cut in half. However the printing seems to be too fast. About 1 in 10 lables has garabge (blank or ?>>>>?>> on it). I have added 2 to 3 second pauses between labels in order to stop this. This seems to slow down the printing enough to print correctly but slows the printing down. In addition it brings up screens that…

I can get one record to print using a variable counter within a print script, to print the required number of labels. But am having trouble tring to combine it with another one to loop through each record. Can't find the right mix. Can someone help me out here.

When a user pushes a print button a script is activated that does following. Goto Layout xyz Print(With Dialog) allows user to select printer Return to original layout Alls fine and dandy except if the user cancels the print at the choose printer stage, they get the usual message do you want to continue with script? They allways choose no and get left in the layout that i really do not want them not to be in. apart from setting up a button in the layout is there a way to auto continue script or set up error capture to return them to orginal page automatically? Hi, I have a "products price listing" made of several records printed from a layout with "view as list". Now I need to make a printed index of this price list in order for the reader to quickly locate the product of his interest. To do this I need to know the page number each record is printed on. Have a report where I have a field that calculates two values from two summary fields on a sub-summary line. I would like to sum that field on other sub-summary parts but I get it to work. When I experiment with this I either I get "?" or "0" or some huge total. Any suggestions. We upgraded our databases from FMPro v.6 to v.7.3 and immediately encountered printing problems. This appears to be independent of the computer we're printing from although all are running Mac OS X v.10.3.5 or 10.3.7. Our printer is a 100BaseT networked HP LaserJet 4050N with 8 MB of RAM. I state this because the printer gives an "Out of Memory" error with an FMPro v.7 reports in excess of 4 pages. I've noticed that FMPro v.7 creates unusually large files. For example a 15 page report when saved as a PDF is 3.4 MB in size and also won't print more than the first 4 pages from the Preview program. I have a simple dbase that will print a basic A4 invoice sheet when run on a mac. It includes a header, body and footer. When it is transfered to a PC it would appear that nothing prints except anything in the footer. On a list view it will only print the last record. This is driving me crazy. Other programs print fine to the printer. (Which is a Lexmark X1180). Has anybody come across this, or more importantly have a fix for it. The database is the simplest invoice with nothing clever about it. I just can't think of anything else. Thanks

I have just completed a really sexy quote/report. The final report consists of nine different layouts. Most of them consist basically of one large text field. Each sub-report is a single page except for one, which can run close to the maximum number of pages. At the last minute, my beloved customer announced that he wanted a facility to print PDFs so the stuff can be emailed. It is a runtime/kiosk solution, so no 'save as PDF'. The customer does use pdfFactory to print other bits to PDFs but this is impractical with 9 successive Print commands. Hi all, Weird one here. When I run my current project through developer utilities and create a stand alone solution, any report that is viewed in preview mode loses the little "X" box, and it can't be closed. It just floats there till you quit the app. It does not show this behavior on the Mac, only windows, and only after it is turned into a stand alone app. Any ideas ? Any help would be great.

I need to be able to generate pdfs with amounts of data in a field that is dynamic. How can I have a second page created if the data exceeds the field length? For ex. with a news article only the visible part of the article will print to the pdf

In several different databases, I have a large text field for comments. Occasionally when printing, one of the lines in the comments field will have the first word of the line, then everything else on the line is missing. The next line is fine (prints normally), but there is just blank space for the affected line. Obviously, the data is still in the database. This happens on several printers, and the preview window shows the text normally. The only workaround I have found is that sometimes, slightly adjusting the width of the box in the layout will bring back the text. I don't want to have to change the layout each time this happens though. Any ideas?

Here is a good one. When printing a portal with a HP laser, the third line is omitted. When printing the same portal with a deskjet, the third line printed OK. Where is the catch??

I'm sure there is a very simple solution, and my asking is going to highlight my complete ignorance with databases, (databasi?)however; I am trying to print off a page of address labels that has one label per record. I have created a layout using the avery label settings, and the fields are all layed out properly. However when I browse the label layout in list mode, it shows each record vertially. If I view the labels in preview mode it shows all of the addresses layed out perfectly, however this is just teasing me, as when I try to print in either mode it only prints the current record. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi I use FM 8v2 and have a solution where different scripts have been added with the Print option. On one rapport the program crash (close) everytime - and only when on this layout. I can make a PDF file of the page. I can preview the page but I cannot print it. The error happened after I had done one print where I changed some setting on the print menu. After I have tried to delete the print script, then everything work. Then I added the a new print script - but when I select the option function inside the script FM crash again. OK, been beating my head against the wall about this one for a week or so.... Got a report I need to generate, on annual test scores for students, with sub-totals by teacher, by grade, by school, and a grand total for district-wide. So far, so easy. The kicker is, my boss wants to see the scores separated out by sex, so essentially I need three sub-totals for each level of sub-summary-- scores for girls, scores for boys, and combined scores. Unfortunately, summary fields don't let you filter within the report (at least that I know of)-- i.e., I can't ask for "On the teacher subsummary level, give me Average Scores Total, Average Scores Girls, Average Scores B…

I think I know the answer to this but .... Does anyone know of a way to determine how long a printed text field would be when using a variable pitch font? I have a situation where we are printing a company name on a pre-printed certificate, along with a bit of other slightly variable text. The problem is that the names vary enormously in length. Most fit quite well but some would run to two lines and there just isn't room. What I'd like to do is reduce the font size if, and only if, the name is too big. Very strange, when i script a page setup as landscape a4 or portrait a4, the page size will be correct, however when previewing the page will align in the top left corner. If however during the script i manually goto file print setup and just select a4 and press ok, the page centers correctly. Anybody know a fix for this? Cheers Genx

Hi, I have been converting/rewritting a complex application from version 5 to version 8. Many challenges along the way but this one really stomps me: the printing is totally messed up. Comparing the two systems, printing to the same printer, from the same machine, all is fine up until the print preview: everything looks the same, then when printing, in version 8 the text is double spaced, the font size is larger, things get truncated,... OK, maybe there is another way to do this but I wanted to keep it simple so maybe there is a good suggestion out there. I have a portal, within which I may have 1 record, and may have as many as 150 records in it. I want to format a page to print the records in the portal but I cannot seem to find a way to do this so it uses only as many pages as necessary. If I put in 'show 75 records', the portal takes up more than one 8.5x11 page on my page layout, but I assumed that if I clicked the box in the the sliding/printing feature, it would ignore the format. I've been using FileMaker for many years. All of a sudden, the first page of my documents is printing as Page 0. Also, I generally use Palatino as my font, but it prints as something else (looks somewhat like Helvetica) so I just changed the font to Helvetica. I've gone into the Print Dialog Box, selected Copies and Pages and then FileMaker. It says "Number pages from 0" (don't know how that happened). I change it to 1, but it won't hold the change and the first page still prints as Page 0. I've tried trashing my preferences. I've been trying to figure this out for two days and I'm desperate. PLEASE HELP! By the way, this is happening on all my FileMaker files.

Filemaker Pro 6 won't print anymore! When I attempt to print a document(Invoice, Purchase Order etc.) from my database I get a warning dialogue that reads: 'Sorry, Filemaker is unable to continue printing. ... if a printer is disconnected temporarily due to a wireless network crash or just a general crash of some type whether it be printer or something else... filemaker will still try and send a print job for about 5 minutes before it gives up... is there someway to check if the printer is responding before printing? cheers, genx

I have a letter templates file set up so the user can enter the text 'firstname' in the body of a letter. Then in the main file a substitute calc that puts the clients first name in to the letter. My problem is trying to format the letter so it does not allow the text to break into the next line. i hope this is clear ? eg i get Rob ert instead of Robert Depending on the number of characters in the person's name it might or might not fit.

Is there a prize for weird problems? Anyone struck this? I have a customer who has just upgraded a solution to V8. (Well, I did the upgrade.) Some reports print with only the left vertical half printed. It happens at random and applies to all the pages in that report. Next printout might be fine. An HP laserjet, from memory. Hello, my first post. I have a layout that has 5 fields (columns) with 20 repeats (rows) of each field. I formatted them in to a spreadsheet style of format with calculations, etc. Rarely does the user input in to all 20 rows. (they are recording chronological bank transactions) How can I print this page, but have only the fields that have data in them print, and only these fields have BORDERS around the fields. Presently I have a graphic of the exact size and dimensions of the 5x20 grid on the layout, so it prints all 20 rows. Kind of silly really. i have 2 layouts that are basically identically set up, however some of the fields are changed in the second one. the format stays the same, but some fields are specified differently. Layout one: i have an area where i enter transmittal data for architectual drawings, the data is on 10 repeating fields in each column. With or without data, if i print i see the lines in between the repeating fields and all of their borders. Layout two: same set up, same area, however the repeating fields arent the same exact fields. The formatting is identical. I am collecting related records from multiple tables and defining different layouts which I would like to print as one continuous report. The layouts are quite complex and using portals doesn't give the flexibility I need. Does anyone know how to disable the form feed that happens on each print step and currently produces one page for each layout. Alternatively, is there another approach? I'm using FMPro 6, and have a field in the "body" part. It is set to slide to accomadate large or small amounts of text. In preview mode, and when printing, if the field crosses to another page, the break always happens in the middle of a line of text. So, page one has the top half of text on it, and page two has the lower half. Any fixes for this? Thanks! -wing

I have a form, that when printed has one field that prints , for one of my privilege sets. This privilege set has modifiable access to this field. All the fields on this layout are from the same table, and have the same permissions. However, just this one field prints . When they view the layout in Browse, they can see the text and even modify it. Why? I've looked everywhere I can and have not found a logical reason for this to occur.

When I print a document using filemaker fields, (FM7), the spacing of the fields is way off. On the screen, it appears to be correct, but the printed version is not. The text of the document and the fields are all the same point size and font...I even tried using several other types of fonts...any suggestions?

Hi all, From my solution i'm trying to print on to a paper that contains 3 pre-printed forms(laying under each other on the paper). Form 1 Form 2 Form 3 It's very important that the text prints in the correct place on each form. But the current problem is that the first form is printed correctly but then the second one all text has moved "up"(on the page) a few millimeters and the same on the third form. Folks, Interesting problem. In it's simplest form, I can preview a page and the page looks perfect. Headers & footers are where they are there are no white spaces, etc. etc. When I go to print (HP LaserJet 4050) the print out prints slightly smaller (which creates white space) and now the text from the next page (field) appears on this page (Filemaker doing its slide printing filling up the white space). Which is find except that the text being brought "up" to fill in the space is overwriting the footer. YUCK! On the next page the same text overwrites the header on that page. I have written a script which is designed to print out 3 layouts each on a different type of paper from the 3 trays of my printer. Filemaker seems unable to retain the printer setting of the script to handle this simple task. They just revert to the default setting of the users computer. This was a known issue in FM7, however the FM Knowledge base has now been updated claiming this problem is fixed in version 8. I have just finished upgradeing our systems, so I am now using FM Pro 8 on all of our PC's and FM Server 8 is running on Windows Server 2003. Yet I am still having the same problem. Please help.

Have a report in which one particularly large field spans multiple pages sometimes. When there is alot of text and it spans pages, something weird happens... between the bottom of one page and the top of the next, lines of text are missing. When I print the report, however, it's all there. Anybody seen this before? Ideas?

Hello, I have developed a FileMaker solution for logging my observations and generating report documents of those findings as noted on my inspections. However, I am burdened with having to generate multiple separate documents as opposed to one flowing report. For example: Each report has a Cover Page, and an Observations section. Using Filemaker Pro 8 with OS X 10.4.3, I previously had no problems printing out docs, postcard, etc. Without remembering what had changed (if anything), now when I preview things, it shows a blank version of my doc. Then if I go to actually print, my Epson R200 appears to click and whirr like it usually does when getting ready to print, but then doesn't continue. The print queue manager shows "printing" but then doesn't. What am I doing wrong?

It doesn't matter what database I open or create (new or old) it just comes up with the options page (records being browsed, current record, number of copies, etc) and then I check that it is set up for the correct printer and click okay. I have several layouts in a database that no matter what I set the "Page set up" to it stays on 11 X 17. If I choose letter, it is 11 X 17, Legal, whatever. I'm currently building a Report that is mostly text but has a jpeg (via container) and portal on it that both need to print. Is it possible to have these items slide with the text portion of this report? I've tried all the sliding options, but it doesn't seem to work. It seems as though the jpeg and portal stay where I placed them no matter how much text is in the text area. Below is a sample screenshot. Hi all, I have a report that prints a receipt on a half-size Letter Portrait continuous form but I can't find that paper size (half-size letter) on Epson LX300+ printer. The receipt prints fine but it ejects the whole letter page after printing. I'd like to be able to set the printer not to eject the letter paper to be able to utilize the next half of the page. Hello to all those are searching for a solution to the printer bug in FMP7. I dig a few in this and found a solution. Before you go further to find a better solution let me tell you my quest. I have a solution with 2 printers, one for lables one for invoices. As you could imagine, I hope my FM scripts to change printer to LabelWriter for the labels and to HP for the invoices. There's some plug-ins but I was searching for a free solution. I have a layout that is defaulting to print current record. I need it to print records being browsed. I have switched the setting and executed the print step and the defualt is not changing. I suspect this is very simple and I am missing it.

I have noticed this in both FM7 and FM8, but we never had an issue in FM5. My network is setup with all printers being shared by my primary domain controller. From here all the WinXP Pro boxes get mapped printers on login. It works great for everything, but it seems like many times I go to print in FM7 or FM8 and it prints to a paper I dont have. I have tripple-checked all settings as far as page setup, what paper I have installed in the printer.. and sometimes it does work? Hi, I have a file that is hosted on Filemaker Server. When I connect to it, layouts seem to default to a page setup zoomed at 70%. Is there a way I can change the default print/page setup zoom to be 70% I'm on a mac, and I don't think this affects the PC people that use the file. thanks :

Hello, I am a complete beginner and am trying to print a list for the first time. I have created a list and can view it within the entire data base. Problem is, I cant view this list exclusively in order to print it. I have tried to print this list only, however FM wants to print the entire list. Also, I cant print my list one by one because it is 600 entries! Can anyone please help? Thanks, A

When I print an address list to an envelope layout, it prints every other address. I have carefully checked the options boxes on both my printer (epson 1280) and filemaker and can find nothing that might help. Who might have the answer to this problem? Thanks, Jill

A new problem has just arisen with Filemaker 8; everytime I load the program, it defaults to page size A3 landscape. I duly go to file -> page setup and reconfigure A4 portrait only to have FileMaker forget this next time I open the database. Every other program on my machine is printing fine, so FileMaker can't be picking this up from global printer settings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. Andy Bannister

I have a two table FMP database (I will over simplify for efficiency's sake). The main table is a customer table with Name and Custom ID and the related table is a purchases table with date of purchase and the single item purchased. I would like to create a report that lists each customer and then on the same row the products the customer purchased. For example, if customer John Smith purchased products A, B, and C I would like John Smith's row in the report to reflect A, B, and C on the same line as the customer's name, not via three lines for John Smith with one each having A, B, and C. Does my question make sense? Hope so. Any suggestions would be great.

I am having problems printing the DDR (v8A). No matter which print options I select relative to the frames, layout etc, I get two pages. What I really want to print is the fields and the uses in various layouts. It will be long as this particular file has 500+ fields. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks

Hello, Does anyone know of a way to create a script that would allow a FM runtime user to nudge a printout in various directions? I'm creating a runtime that will allow users to print directly onto a HCFA 1500 form. Since there is variability between printers, drivers, and platforms I would like to give them the ability to nudge the printout up, down, left, or right a little bit to match up data with the preprinted form. Your help is much appreciated!

Hello Together, I'm not sure if I've spent too much time working on this database and slowly start loosing my mind. I have just placed a simple new (text) field onto one of my layouts. I can see it in browse mode but not in preview mode and it doesn't print either. I have looked into Format>Sliding&Printing but the box for "do not print selected objects" is not checked. I have a problem with a text field after update my application to Filemaker pro 7. I'm trying to get FileMaker Pro 5 to print from 3 different trays in 1 printer. On the forums, it looks like people are using third-party plug-ins. Does anyone know of a script that would do it? I am working with a database than was converted from FM 6 to 7. When I go to print, the settings look ok, the paper size is letter. When I click the advanced button and change anyhting in there (such as scaling, or number of copies to print), the paper size changes itself to some odd size such as 17" x 11" and the document does not want to print because the printer has letter size paper. It is not a problem with the layout, it is a pretty small layout and well fits onto a letter-size page. I have made a lovely layout for invoicing that has three portals on the page showing 1. related time billing items 2. expenses items 3. payments made towards this invoice the data for these portals are all related by a serial number to the table of invoices. This is fine but when I come to print I understand i shouldn't use portals because they can not expand infinitely and i can't seem to get them to slide very well over pagebreaks. I print out layouts from FileMaker to integrate (by hand) into a Microsoft Word report. Essentially, I just have a page holder in Word, and when the report is generated, I print from FMP and slip the page into the report. To keep page numbering consistent throughout, I have a text field in the footer of the layout where I type the page number. It's not a "Page Number" field that automatically updates, it's just a place where I key the appropriate number. If I print a single record ("Current record"), it prints properly. However, if I print "Records being browsed", it alters the numbers, seemingly arbitrarily, raising them by two in this instance. Why…

Hi all, Wondering if you can help with a issue I'm having under OS X - 10.3.9 (yeah, old school!) When printing in Filemaker, I can't select my shared laser printer in the print dialogue, although it's available in the Print Centre. The network is a simple ethernet LAN, I'm running a G5 iMac (10.3.9) and Filemaker Pro 7.0v1, the computer the printers are connected to is a G4 tower, not running Filemaker. I have the Network Sharing turned on in Filemaker (for kicks - I don't imagine this is the issue). Anyone?? Easy one?

Operating System: OS X 10.3.9 We're using Filmaker 8.0 in conjunction with networked printers such as HP Laserjet 8100, 8150 and 5100. When attempting to print, some documents show an "out of memory" error message everytime. This only happens on some layouts and only when trying to print on the HP Laserjet 8100 and 8150 printers whilst using Filemaker 8. Any suggestions? As it surely isn't something to do with an actual lack or memory to print mere documents. Plus, not being able to print is far from ideal!

I am creating a report using FMP 8 Advanced. I originally set up the report to print on 11 x 17 paper because of the amount of data in the report. We have since narrowed down the amount of data and I should be able to print on 8-1/2 x 11. I have gone back to the Printer Setup and chosen Letter, Portrait for my paper size and have even chosen a different printer to print to. But the report keeps show the page size for 11 x 17. I have made sure that nothing is printing off of the right side of the page but the length of the page is too long and I am missing data in my report. Hi All, I have a client running FMP 5.5 on a Win2000Pro - She just installed a new printer yesterday (HP Color LaserJet 2550L) and now when she attempts to print anything from FMP 5.5, all that prints is a page with the following info: PCL XL error Subsystem: Text Error: InsufficientMemory Operator: Text Position: 193 I had her change the print spooling to "Print directly to printer", that didn't solve the problem. I had her check Preferences > Application > Memory which is set to save to disk every 10 minutes and cashe is 512. Any ideas? Thanks, Sheryl

I have a custom printing setup for a customer. One of many, but this one has wasted rows. I need to print out a form that shows the following: Date Sold; Who Sold; Total Tax; That I have figured out. What I need is for the report not to show any sales that have a zero (0) in the Total Tax field. So the report is only going to show the sales that had a tax assigned to it. Hope this makes sense.

I need to change the body color of a report based on the value of a field. One way of doing this is to have a calculated container field that looks up a color graphic based on a calculation. The problem with this is that the Sliding/Printing feature won't properly reduce the size of a container field. Anyone know a trick on how to set the body color through scripting?

When printing a merge letter from my MAC (FMP 8 Adv), it prints fine - when User B (Windows XP, FMP 7) prints the merge letter, it gets the first few lines ok, but then the middle of line 4 is blank - but there is words at either end of the line. And then when User C (Win Xp, FMP 8) prints it, there is only text at one end of the line and the rest is blank. The rest of the letter is intact the way it would be - it's like the words were "whited-out". Has this ever happened to anyone? FYI It looks fine on the screen when it prints.

I have a simple database that I have imported PDF's (Scanned documents with signatures etc.) into containers. When I print from Adobe Reader, the PDF's look great, but when I print from FMP (every version) they are incredibly bitmapped. Any advice?

I am experiencing missing data when I print a report. The report sorts by Department, then Job, then Employee, then Date worked. There is then a total by Employee, Job, and Department. The body is each day the employee worked. Many times the body will fall on a page break. Sometimes this is fine; however, sometimes it omits a single day. The totals are still accurate – but the single day is missing. I have tried different printers and have adjusted the margins. Ideas?
