  2. Hello, I have 2 problems with filemaker. I have hide the side navagation bar so the mouse wheel will not scroll to the next record, however I would like to scroll the portal. So for example the portal have 50 lines/items and if I use the mouse wheel I can scroll down all the way to the last record in the portal. The 2nd program is the tab fuction, I I have 2 fields in a portal and I would like to tab down to the next records in the portal but to the same field.     I have two databases joined one to many - "customers" and "equipment" The form shows "customers" information with a portal showing related "equipment". Customers each get unique serial number generated sequentially as they are added. As I add records to equipment in the portal, I want to also generate sequential equipment serial numbers 1,2,3 so that I can join the two serial numbers to get unique customer-equipment number that will be used to tie other joined databases. I compile them and email the doc to a subscription list. Ulitmately, I want to see all my projects and their associated tasks in a printable report.     I have a database that prints out a two page invoice. There is a portal on the layout that spans two pages because the orders have so many items. It works fine for the most part, but if you change the printer then the printable range changes and I have to go in an modiy the layout. Is there a way to link to portals? Can I put on on the first page and then have he second one pick up with the remaining records? Or can you think of another way to get a portal to span two pages?

    I run a Sick Children's Fund where I have a parent table listing the clients (children) and their details including location. In a related table (related by Serial Number)I record disbursements to each client. Each client usually has many individual disbursements over a several month period. I've managed to use the Product Catalog Template and modify it to my needs so it looks and acts like my access database except for one thing. I'm tring to implicated a fairly difficult sorting solution. Heres what it is: Each Record has one assigned keyword and a price value.   13. I am working on a layout that has a text box (edit box) that starts at the bottom of the first page and continues to the second page because it holds a large amount of text. Whenever I print from this layout, the first page prints fine, but at the top of the second page, the first 10 or so lines are the last lines on the first page. Some of the text is being printed out on the first and second pages. I have "Allow part to break across page boundaries" enabled. Does anyone know a solution to prevent the duplication of text on the two printed pages?     There are certain fields where it would be useful for Filemaker to offer already entered completions to a field, depending on what you have already entered. This would operate like the address field in OSX Mail or the URL address in IE, in which drop downs appear with URLs already in the cache to click on, depending on what you have typed.     Hi, In order to stop bad user entry into my database, I need to stop more than 40 orders in total being placed. A customer can have 5 orders, 5 "active" orders that are not set to cancel. But basically the user enters the orders via a portal relating to the orders table. I need a way that when they click the Weightneeded which is a popmenu of weights, a way to check that there haven't been 40 orders.     I have a layout of patients with 2 portals. The first displays all of a patients medication allergies. The second portal displays a patients medications. The second portal has an active field and sorts so that all the active medications are on top. It does display nonactive medications below that to see what may have changed recently. I know it is difficult to print from portals, therefore I would like to make a layout that for a given patient prints there name as the header, followed by their medication allergies and then their active medications.( I would need to limit the medications to where the active box is checked).     Ok guys and gals, this should be fun. I have File A which contains job records, one job per record. File B has late letters that I have sent for jobs that haven't been paid. I need a portal in File A that reminds me to send a second follow-up letter, after 30 days have elapsed and the silly people still haven't paid. I delete the letter from file B when they have paid so there aren't any letters there that don't need to be. I'll create a third file "C" for the second letter sent, but that's another story.   22. Hi, I'm using a value list of elements with checkboxes. For each record, an element is checked if it is used. A record can have more than one element checked. Records are into groups (sub-summaries). Each group needs a summary for how many of each element are checked. I found myself having to create a lot of fields to do this. 3 field for each element of the value list. - a field per element with a calculation with "PatternCount" - a summary field to get the "total" of the calculated field above: - a group summary field for this element Since i have 5 elements in the value list.     Hello, I'm new with FM. I must debug a web page. We had an application running on FM4 someone import pages in FM7. With FM7 we try the FM web server and I have a model (layout) who works correctly in FM7 but the problem is when I try this model in a web page, some icon not appear or not the good icon appear. I think it using 3 tables. The major table can have some "X" for some fields and when it have a "X" it must appear an icon from an other table. Example: When the field Glove have "X" the icon Glove must appear. Do you have an idea why some icon doesn't appear and sometimes it's not the good icon appear? Thanks for your help.

  26. Table A contains investors names Table B contains various funds A unique identifier is a name, fund, and account number. This is a calculation field. I want to fill out a form and I have to choose the correct person and fund. I thought I could use the unique identifier in a value list, but FM won't let me. It won't store the calculation since it uses values from related fields. I can make my own unique identifier instead of calculating one, but this seems an unnecessary thing to do, as the computer can calculate the info. So I do I get this to work in a value list?

    I have a number of layouts with subsummary and trailing grand summary parts. Each layout has the sort field and a summary field in the subsummary part, then the summary field again in the trailing grand summary part. When the records are sorted by the sort field for the subsummary part, everything displays fine and correct. However when a reorder is added to the sort so that the records are reordered to be decreasing by the summary field, the summary field content goes blank in the subsummary part.   30. Merge fields inherit font formats. Can they inherit changes in the paragraph formats, specifically tab settings? Our intention is to print complex (and changing) text-intensive layouts by concatenating a record's text fields into a single merge field.     Is there a way to import the custom values from a value list from one version of a solution to a newer version of the same database? When I update a database that I have at a client's site, I typically bring a clone of the update, and run an import script to bring in all their data. The one thing that gets missed is if they edit the custom values of a value list.     Filemaker 5.0 I designed a program at 800x600 resolution and when I installed it the user screen is 1024x768 so it only displays on 1/2 of the screen How do you ensure a window is open to its largest capable size? This meaning the window must fill the user's screen, therefore a 800X600 user will have his window sized to 800x600 and a 1024x768 user will have his window sized to 1024x768. I guess the real question is that this window needs to be maximized as if the user clicked on the maximize button on the title bar and the proportions are right.

    I have a layout in list veiw. There is a footer with all the buttons to set up the printer and print. The print script brings the layout into preview mode and prints. The problem I'm running into is the computer continues to print the footer as well. I know how to tell fields not to print, but how do you tell the footer and everything in it not to print.   40. Hi, I have a members database with a picture field in it. I want to be able to take the members photo with a web cam or digital photo but i've been told i can't do that with filemaker. Does anyone know how i can do this? Is there a new feature in 7, a work-around or a plug-in somewhere?   41. I have defined a global field that is set up for 10 repetitions. On my layout I have 10 fields which each respectively refer to this global field. The entry into these fields is done via a common value list. I basically use this to keep track of different versions. ie/ field 1 = version a14, field 2 = version a15, field 3 = version a14. This setup has been working fine so far until the other day when I put it online to share with other users. What happens is that I set my versions for each of the respective fields based on my defined value list and all looks good.     hi, I have a problem with a portal showing unwanted records, basically a user can cancel an order, but when cancelled the portal row needs to omited somehow from the portal, basica structure of db, tbl_customers, tbl_orders and tbl_turkeys. the reason that i don't want them deleted is due to the business wanting to keep a record of all orders placed. Maybe an export to a file would work? dunno played around with it for ages and still no success. The user cancels the order by pressing a button, this is to stop uncancelling orders and for validation. any help would be great! MnR

    I have this value list that is populated from the USE CUSTOM VALUES option. I use it, for example, to select BillyBob, Skippy or Rex as a good candidate to assign a task. Every now and then I would like the option to de-select these candidates. IE, I would like to be able to click into a field and select (NOTHING), thereby setting the field to empty. I have a Street and Town field in each table. i want to type in Streets and Towns, but to be remembered.     Does anyone know how to lighten up the highlight color so that I can still see my text when it is highlighted? I've looked all over here and also on usenet in some of the Windows groups. In Word and Outlook, etc. when the text is highlighted it changes color to a contrast so you can still see it. Not so with FileMaker. On my Mac at home I can have the highlight color be anything I choose.....I can't find anything like that on the Windows machine here at work....What to do? Thanks. Deborah

    Fellow developers, occasionally I stumble across layout limitations, for example things that work in one layout part but not in others. Example: up to FP6, global fields placed in the header part could only be edited in Form view (since FP7 it also works in List and Table views). Other Example: In FP7 IWP I was not at all able to edit fields placed in the header part.     When viewing the records in list view, a 'current record bar' appears at the side of the record that is current. This moves along side each record as you move up and down. Is there a way to enhance this record bar, so that it acts like a highlighter across the page, from left to right.     I have so far been able to relate tables and have them work normally. I related a new table for medication lists by patient id and name.     Hello, all. My boss wants to be able to enter "canned" text into a text field to save folks from having to type the same phrases over and over. My idea was to have a value list field containing all the canned phrases people typically enter next to a button. The user selects the canned phrase from the value list, clicks the button and the selected phrase is placed into the text field above right where the cursor is. I know the 'insert text' script step, but I can't figure out how to get it to insert text at the cursor. Ideas? Thanks.

    When I switch to a table view the Field Names all show up as a row across the top of the page. Is there a way to make them display vertically in column on the left instead? Microsoft Excel has a feature called TRANSPOSE where you can take a row of field values (A1-A2-A3) and convert them to a column (A1-B1-C1).     Whenever I get emails from my mac in Entourage, I copy some of that info and paste into Filemaker. I have Filemaker set to be ay 9point Helvetica, but when you paste into any field, the formatting is lost and it stays at the formatting that it was from the email. Is there anyway to force the formatting in FM, so that it is always Helvetica 9 point? thanks.

    Guess I posted to the wrong area...so here goes again. I have placed a portal on my sales layout from my products list. I can get it to select a record from a pop-up menu to display a record from products...great, however, on the next line when I choose another record the first line is replaced to match the second line. Plus the third row will not show the menu to select another Product ID?? Any ideas? Thanks.

  66. Hey, I have a database on people that are a member of our club. When people leave the club they get a mark 'inactive'. I don't want to delete those records from the database, but just never see them on any lay-out. How do I do this? I know I can search and leave away those records, but this is a bit frustrating for all people looking in the database and doing their searches and having the 'inactives' come up in their searches as they are included in their home made searches. tia, Michel

I have three type of invoice layouts- one for international ,one for US Customers, onve for multiple stores (multiple packing slips and single invoice); and one for international customer I currently have all layouts in Exel.     I have noticed that users are able to change fonts when they enter text into a text field in FileMaker. In layout, I specify a specific font and font size. But users can go into browse mode, go to Format-Font and Format-Size and they can change the font and size for each text field. I have several users doing this, which results in each record's text fields being of different fonts and sizes. Is there any way to prohibit users from setting a different font and size while they are in browse mode?

    In FM6, I used to use the disappearing portal trick described on page 414 of "Special Edition: Using Filemaker Pro 5". Basically you use a portal to make buttons and fields diappear or reappear based on a relationship. I can't seem to make this same bahvior work on FM7. I'm trying to make a "show all contacts" button disappear when the user is viewing the complete set of records, but when the user is viewing a smaller found set, the "show all contacts" button would reappear. Any idea what I may be doing wrong? Or is there a change in behavior in FM7?

    Newbie here trying to set-up what I think should be a simple portal. I want a button that will allow me to add the current date in one field and then on the adjacent line it will allow me to enter as many lines of free text as I want. Each time I press the button the most recent date and note will be added to the top of the list. I can draw this out (see illustration below) but can't seem to define the fields, relationships and write the scripts to get it all to work. It seems to me I'm making it harder than it actually is. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi, As you may guess, I'm fairly new to Filemaker but I love it! Anyhow, I have a small company which currently uses 5.5 - I am (with a little help) rewriting our workflow system. I have some nice layouts but we have some PC's running different screen resolutions to others. Most run 1024 x 768 and the layouts have been designed to fit nicely. My laptop however runs 1400 x 1050 and the layout is too small. If I zoom to 150%, it's just a tad too big but acceptable. What I would like to do is perform a 'calculated zoom' if at all possible, where the layout will zoom dependant on screen resolution. Gang- I'm creating a telephone directory and I need to duplicate the behavior found in many dictionaries or encyclopedias: I need to show in the header the first surname on the page and the last surname on the page. They must both be in the header and appear in the format "surnamefirst - surnamelast" where surnamefirst is the last name of the FIRST record on that page and surnamelast is the last name of the LAST record on that page. I'm at a loss as to how to do this. If I just put the surname field in the header, it correctly displays the first surname from that page, but what must I do to somehow grab the last surname from a given page?

    Is there any way to turn off portal highlighting for specific portals? I have a few one to one relationships that use large sized (as in a 400x400 pixel rectangle containing 10 fields) portals to display information, if the user misses the intended field with a mouse click they are greeted with a large black rectangle. Not the end of the world, but it is ugly and I know it will cause confudion for some of my users.

    I'd like to create a splash screen to open my database. It would have two buttons to navigate to other files -- that's easy. I'd also like to have a portal displaying all records from one of those files. I seemingly need a relationship between the spash screen file and the target file but am not sure how to create one that will let me view all the records by a particular field since there is no inherent relationship and the spash screen will always be just one record. It must be easy but I am missing it in the moment.

  97. I made a picture to better describe what I'm trying to accomplish. Basically I work for an industrial shop that has about 30 machines that jobs are running or reserved on. I'm trying to make a scheduling program where someone can insert, delete, and move around jobs on a whiteboard. Since the people who'll be using the program are not usually around computers I'm trying to make it as simple as possible. I have 3 text fields in a FM database... one is the users name, the other is their function (eg painter or plumber) and the other is the group (a letter reference eg A,B,C or D) that he/she belongs to. Now what I want the main database to do is populate a drop down box based on a matching group reference - for example the main database records says this job belongs to "group a" and we are looking for "plumbers" only)... so I want a pull down list to only have group "a" members who have a function of "plumber" generated from the other database.     I have a little newsletter and sell advertising to supplement the cost. The cost buy an ad depends on the size of the ad and the amount of subscribers. For instance RateCard A is for 1000 subscribers. A 2/3 ad would cost you 50.00. Now if subscription rises, I would create a new rate card called RateCard B. What I would like to do, if possible, is create a DB that contains two value lists and returns the current rate for the publication. The two value lists would be AdSize and RateCard.
