Hi, I have a solution that I want to attach a read me file to. I have seen files that have pictures of the screen with toolbars and such for visual reference. How does one do this? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all... I have recently converted and filemaker 5.5 file to filemaker 7.0. I have a field that points to a URL that a script opens in a web browser. Since the upgrade my URLs are not working. It appears that filemaker 7 is putting an extra / in the url that is in my file. I've installed Filemaker 7 Advanced Server and recently updated to 7.0v3. Filemaker 7 Adv Server is currently residing on a Windows 2000 sp4 member server. I have set the options in Filemaker Server to use external authentication. I set the directory settings and the event log says it registered with the directory successfully. I've just bought fm pro 7 after having installed and tried the free download. I had the same problem occur in both the trial and purchased versions. The program installed OK and I was able to use it initially, but it later refused to load - it hangs on Auto Update. I'm not sure when the problem occurred with the trial version, but with the purchased version it happened after the machine was in hibernation for about an hour (I'm using a P4 Toshiba running XP). The error says that Filemaker has detected a problem and will now close. After that I can't get back into the program. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times but no result. I have a Text field where I can record activity- calls to clients, projects etc. Each activity starts with the date (as 12/10/05 but in the text box). I now need to sort the records by the date of the activity entered. Of course, when I do a sort at the moment, it does it by the first digits- which is completely wrong for the months & years. Is there any way to force Sort to recognise the first 6 characters as a date & correctly Sort?

I am trying to get a database to work in multiple countries. Working with dates has proven to be troublesome. What I find is that if I use the GetAsText(date), the result is always US format, no matter what country system the database is running on and no matter whether I use Set Use System Formats [On] or not. Is the GetAsText function simply paying no attention to the local system format, i.e. is this a bug, and just using ghe format the DB was originally created in, or am I missing something?

I'm converting an existing application which runs over a small network. I'm not clear about the syntax for the path definitions for file references. Are the references relative to the folder that the application is in ... or do I need to specify some path that is absolute for all of the client machines? I've read the manuals so far without luck

I am an experienced database/SQL developer just getting started in FMP 7. After poking around for several hours and looking over the documentation, I cannot see how to update a set of records, like the SQL UPDATE statement. I was wondering if anybody has taken the Filemaker7 certification test (I"m sure someone has). I'm just curious to know how hard it was (from a scale from 1 to 10) and what the test primarily focused on.

As I am setting up a contacts section of a database, I'd like to store Word documents associated with individual contacts. (Each contact has a distinct Word document associated with them.) Furthermore, I'd like to be able to click on these documents to have them automatically open in Microsoft Word. I've read another post on this, but apparently even need the obvious spelled out for me . This database will not be on the web or networked outside of this one computer, if that matters. Hello- I have a database with 3 separate layouts. They are all different sizes so that they can open on top of one another allowing me to see the window/layout behind the active layout. The problem is that when I click on the script to open a window it RESIZES the main window/layout to the same size as the smaller layout that should remain in front. When this happens, I can no longer see the main layout in back. Why is it doing this? Any ideas would be very appreciated...

Hi all. I've been able to get my FM solution up and running. It's not the best, but it's functional and I've come to rely heavily on it. I've got Backup backing up my database every night to keep data catastrophes from occurring. Now I've got some strange things going on with my database, though. One of my table has lost all it's fields! The records are still there, as shown in the "define database -> tables" tab, but the fields are all gone. I'm not sure what the best way to deal with this is. I've got "Special Edition: Using FM Pro 7" and it only suggests doing a "File: Recover" to deal with database problems. I'm looking for some direction on a good Backup Software. FM help suggests:A good third-party backup program should provide multiple copies of a database as sources for restoration. A scheme involving rotating backups can accomplish this. Typically, this method involves separate backup copies over no less than a two-week rotation. The file is backed up to a set on day one, a new set on day two, until ten sets of backups exist (assuming a five day work week). On the eleventh day, the first set is reused. I just bought Academic FileMaker Pro 7. I've installed it as the manual instructs, but now when i click on the launch icon, the splash screen comes up, then disappears, and nothing further happens!! The program doesn't open/launch! So i download the updater to see if that would help: 7.0v3, and try and install that, but it says it needs to be installed over v1, v1a, or v2. but i can't find any updaters on the net of those versions, at all! I have inherited an ancient legacy project at the office: an old, FileMaker 2.1 database used to keep track of manual revisions. What are my best options for upgrading this to something more recent? I'm not particularly FM-savvy anyway, is there any chance of taking this to some SQL format?

Newbie here. In learning the app initially, I used File?Save a copy as a few time s before I attempted a sweeping chage to what I had in place. Now, under the Layout arrow on the left tool bar, all those Copies showe up as Tables to view. However, if I go to DEFINE TABLE, they do not show up there. How can I delete these copies from the bLayout list? Thanks all

As I did not find a general filemaker catagory I am posting here.. Has anyone heard that filemaker is planning another release? not a patch as in 7.01 ... 7.02 etc but a full number release such as 7.5 or 8.0? Our company is on a yearly maintanance schedule with filemaker for 50 seats as well as server and server advanced.. The maintenance is for 1 year and will cost us over $3000.00 ..this will allow us to have any upgrades to a new release for a period of 1 year. ok fm7 is making me quite self-aware of my lack of independence. it seems that every time i try to do anything in the define databases dialog (tables/fields/relationships) and close it i spend a solid 20-30 seconds rebuilding my dependencies. i don't have all that much to my system yet -- about 20 mostly empty tables and a tangle of various relationships but no external files. my machine is not a speed demon (G4/400) but c'mon, this is such a drag to work like this. anyone else experiencing this speed hit whenever messing with the relationship graph?

I have a pop up menu that uses a value list: "1 Day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, exact date". These are the values for the next call to be made under the "call menu" field. Let's say I choose "1 week." When i click that pop up menu and choose "1 week" i want a different field ("next call") to display the result of the current date + 7 days. Noob here, Maybe someone can help. First off, let me mention that companies try to sell zip code lists when you can just download one from census.gov. Anyway, i have fields in my database that have city, st, zip....I have a seperate database file of zipcodes that have fields for zip and city along with a lot of other garbage (longitude, etc...no need 4 that). How do i configure my database to call on the zipcode database file so that when i enter a zipcode in my database that it autocompletes my city field automatically? Thanks

I need to deselect everything on a window. I need this because I'm popping up a new window with some editing controls and I get an error that the record can't be modified because it is being modified in another window (the original one). However if by hand I click on an empty area of the orignal window..and then pop up the new one...I can edit the fields. So I need to programmatically deselect everything. Help! ..thanks...Sandy

All, I was having some user interface performance problems (see "Yet Another Performance Question" in this forum), and I think I found something that might be very useful to folks. It appears that if I choose a font that has no associated PostScript font (i.e., it's only a screen font), it really impacts the performance of scrolling, typing, and changing focus from field to field. When I fill a field with text using a font with a PostScript font file, UI performance is snappy. Some of this may be due to using MacOS 10.2.8 on somewhat of a Frankenputer (an original Beige G3 with a G4 processor, Radeon 7000 PCI video card, lotsa memory, etc.), but I figur…

Hi Guys, I've been trying to convince a potential client to have a database system created in FileMaker 7. He is worried about the speed of accessing/creating/sorting records is going to be a very slow process. They are a 25 user system. He is basing his argument on a FMP 6 solution they have, and hence is leaning towards going to a mySQL solution. Have any of you guys got any speed benchmarks against other databases including FM6.

Greetings! New FMP 7 user and need some guidance. I have a layout that contains several fields that pull data from a single table. I've set up another layout that contains a text field that I want to use to enter notes related to the data in the main layout discussed above. I've set up a button that opens the "notes" layout. Here's my question. When I click on the button to load the "notes" layout, I want to be able to be able to enter notes into this field and have it be associated with the record on the main layout page. How do I do this? Anyone know of a way to eliminate the flashing that occurs when running a script that opens a New Window? Add a resize to that and the flash is even more pronounced.

FileMaker was working just fine. Then yesterday I got a message on the screen, in a strange black and white window, that I need to restart the computer. so I did. FileMaker does not work anymore. I can click on the app icon, or in the dock. The splash screen comes up, and then it just stops. I removed both com.filemaker.filemakerpro.plist and com.filemaker.pro7.plist from the ~/library/preferences. I reinstalled the program. I updated it again to 7v3. I fixed permissions. It still does not work. What should I do now? OS X 10.3

Thanks to transpower I made progress on my FMP 7 project. However, there are two new problems I ran into and cannot yet solve satisfactory: 1) How can I display multiple records from table rows in layout rows? - I previously assumed that adding a portal would do the trick, but for some reason I cannot highlight the table to use for the record input in the portal menu. I'm currently thinking of buying from an online vendor that is selling FM7 full version retail box for $183.99 and FMS7 full version retail box for $745.00. I'm kinda having second thoughts since the prices seem too good compared to places like Amazon, but it would save me a lot if they are legit. Anyone know how I would go about finding out? Hello All, I have read this note about filemaker maintenance somewhere: I really don't know what can be considered 'regular maintenance' at this point. Maybe I can create a compacted copy, or create an empty clone and import only data from the original file.. I don't know. On previous versions of Filemaker server, when the Database crashed it would re-open the files and perform a consistency check and check every file before it opened it. In Filemaker 7 however, I dont see this happening, is feature lost or is there a way to turn it back on?

I logged into my FileMaker application today and everything looks fine except it's not populated with any data! I can do a "Show all records" and it seems to return the proper amount of records but all the fields are blank! The file size looks nice and normal. Any suggestions?? I appreciate it

I am working on an order entry application. When a user creates a new order, I didn't want the order number to be generated until she hit a confirm button that performed a commit statement. I set up the Order# to be auto entered serial # on commit. I create a new order and start entering in info into some of the fields. If I click out of a field, the order # is generated. Is there a way to force the commit to not happen until they hit the confirm button? Thanks! John

I'm trying to do a mail merge (Microsoft Word 2003) using FMD as a data source. I have installed the ODBC driver and believe that it is properly configured. At least I have followed the instructions on the FM CD. I can see the driver as a System DSN entry. But here's the problem. When setting up my merge, I select the proper driver as a data source, and a dialog comes up asking me for a user name and password. I have never set up any accounts in filemaker, so I don't know what to enter. I entered Admin as a default, but that didn't work. Can someone help me here? I think everything is in place, but I don't know how to connect. Thanks! Brudderman

Hi All, Does anyone know of the existance of a database out there to track the progress of a project, whilst not allowing certain fields to be populated until certain other fields are filled. The user would be warned what fields need to be filled if they tried to go past without filling them. This would happen at roughly different stages through the job. The purpose of this database is to track the processes involved in the production of television advertisements, and to limit the producer skipping past steps involved in the production of a commercial. I have a problem where I am running multiple solutions on the same Server. If I use File References to open these solutions, *sometimes* I get the License Key Conflict error dialog, warning me that somebody else is already using that license key. The machine I am told that is already using it, is mine. This includes if I use the Open Recent files item or opener files. For example, using the machine Mymac1, I go Open Recent >> Solution1, and it opens fine (I provide password etc.). I have a runtime solution that is asking to connect to the internet via port 5003 and wants to accept connections from internet opening port 1201. Any ideas as to why it is doing this and how to stop it. I see no reason why FM runtime should be asking for internet access. Thanks.

Hello, I'm having some trouble getting an ODBC import working in Filemaker Pro 7 on OS X 10.3. I've installed several ODBC DSN's using the Apple ODBC adminstrator. I use both PostgreSQL and MySQL using the Actual Technologies driver and the MySQL driver (3.51). The DSN's test ok and odbctest works from teh commandline, but none of the DSNs are listed in the Filemaker Pro 7 import ODBC list. Why isn't FMP seeing the installed ODBC DSN's? -matthew

Since it is intended to offer secure login and a pleasant user experience for the clients (with access to their accounts only) as well as for the admin (full access privileges), am I ill-advised to attempt this with FMP7 instant web publishing? Just interested really as a newbie. In the past when looking at fairly well known database the character size entry seemed to be almost mandatory at same time as giving the field in a table its name. I find that it is fairly well hidden in Filemaker with a default of 1, which can be amended. Does anyone know the thinking behind this please? For example by just leaving the default in place, does the database eventually take up more space than if one had carefully thought of a fair size for the field in the first place. Have been advised that if I wanted to design a database, sell and maintain it for an individual or small business (without a NETWORK) then I should purchase Filemaker Developer 7. A study book of Filemaker Pro 7 that I am using, whilst describing the Edit Menu explains that standard commands such as Cut, Copy and Paste etc are there. It goes on to say that the Export Field Contents (still under the Edit heading) lets you export the contents of a field to a file that you can select. For example if I buy the small team bundle and decide to add another user can I just buy another copy of filemaker pro and as long as the server sees 5 different licenses it'll be ok? Also is the amount for volume licensing the same at any place I try to buy Filemaker from? I am needing to make a script that will count down from 120 seconds if there is no activity in the program it sends the user back the the main menu and reset the counter if someone types info. is this possible? I dont really see a way from what i know.

Don't know if this is FM 7 specific but, here is the issue. I have a large text filed (multiple paragraphs) that I wand to format the display as "full align", as oppose to left align. When I choose the "align full" option the right edge of the text is clipped (partial characters) on the right side of the field. I see this either displayed or printed. I've tried a separate lay out using a merge field, same issue, right side characters are clipped. Any thoughts?

I screwed up big time while trying to set 'guest' privileges for a file. I am now in a layout with no privileges whatsoever. I cannot access any scripts or file commands that would let me change to another account or change privileges. I cannot 'see' scripts from other files. Any way out?

When I migrated an old patient database from FMP 3 MAC to FM7 Win the form would start to jumble when we would scroll down the page. The weird thing is it only does it on two of the three PCs on our small network. The PC it doesnt do it on is identical to the others except for the fact that is has a flat screen monitor. Does anyone think its a refresh rate problem?? I cant get into the inner workings of the PC to check video settings b/c the IT guys have it locked down. I want to check that once a new record is created and a particular field ('Events') is entered into, that if subsequently 'Events' is altered (but still contains text), that a warning message is displayed. I've put a Windows Filemaker 7 database on our Linux server, so the database can be accessed remotely via VPN. The database will open, but only as a read-only file, no matter what the account or password. Is there some way I can get the file to be writeable on the server, or do I have to move it to a Windows client? -- in which case I can't access the file remotely via VPN. Any suggestions? Bob

Hello, I am running a report where I really want to visually show a field formated with radio buttons or check boxes. When I run this report I want to remove the labels associated with the buttons/boxes and bring the buttons/boxes closer together (without making the font smaller). Since I can only fit so much stuff with an 8" width limitation for printing, I naturally want to bring the buttons/boxes closer together and put the labels at the top. Does anyone have any ideas? filemaker timestamp - 15/2/2005 11:09:03 am when retreived via xml for web publishing is turned to 15/2/2005 11:09:03. its no use to me because i can't tell whether the time is in am or pm. i tried to change the filemaker timestamp to display time in 24 hour format by setting the time format(format>time) to 24 hours. this however didn't change the format of the time nor the xml output. has anyone worked with timestamp in webpublishing? if so please write so inputs. many thanks.

I have a DB which we use for attendance absences. I am writing a simple script for a report to find records where the creation date and the modification date differ. Both Fields are set to auto enter the date and are unmodifiable. For some reason FM will not allow me to compare these two fields. Am I just missing something? again any help would be appreciated.

I am trying to use a illustrator file as the background for a letter. When the letter prints the image quality is very poor. Can anyone instruct me as to how to maintain the 300 dpi or so image quality when printing?

Hello all, Example: I have an Item Database referenced by a Purchase Order Line Items File. In the Line items File i dont really need any other Info than Item ID and Price to be actually existing. I still want Users to see Item ID -- Category -- Sub Category though when they browse the Line Items. Should i make a new Field in Line Items via my Relationship between Line Items and items, or should i actually create a new Field and make a Lookup via the Relationship? For me it seems to be more clean if i make a field using the relationship, so basically only displaying the fields content rather than actually looking-up the data. I like to keep several windows open during development so that I can quickly see how a change in one layout/calculation, etc affects other layouts and calculations. However, I soon have a proliferation of windows all named 'window'1, 'window'2, etc. is there any way, using FM7 (not developer) to rename windows other than scripting a 'go to layout/new window' which may or may not be the layout I'm concerned with at a particular time. I am new to Filemaker and was wondering what the limits for number of layouts, tables, and scripts are for FMP7. That being said, how do you determine the minimum system requirements for the db? I know this is not a trivial answer in that the size of the layouts, graphics, script length / complexity, etc.. all come into play. We have a major issue with cross-platform compatibility of Fonts. We are using Mac OS X 10.3.8 and Windows 2000 with FileMaker 7.0. This issue has actually plagued us for many versions, not just 7. Basically we have layouts that are for Memos and Proposals, where we have large text fields. On a Windows machine, in Browse Mode and in Preview mode the fonts track differently then they do on the Macintosh. On the Mac it will browse, preview, and print exactly the same. On Windows when we print we get the exact same results as the Mac, but the Preview and Browse does not show it the same, so the user sometimes will reformat their text to make it look good, only to have …

I'd like to be able to calculate the current exchange rate by making a script that looks it up on a website if possible. eg. The quote is listen in American dollars, I'd like to be able to click on a button and it would convert it to Canadian dollars at today's exchange rate. Thanks for any help.

My question is that each student and teacher have stats that are common and unique. Do you think it would be best to create a 'STATS TABLE' that ultimately relate to the contact table? what are the pros and cons?

Hello, I just found this forum and it looks like there is a huge amount of talented people here. As a newbie I am having trouble getting a pulldown list to be in alphabetical order. I made a list of all the inventory I use at my company. Those lists are fine. When I go an area where I create my invoices and select the pulldown menu that has all my 300+ items I sell, they are in a scrambled order. What do you suggest that I do to get them in the order? I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered what I'm pretty sure is a bug: I'm running FileMaker Pro 7v3 I have a file with 68 fields and 9 layouts in which this bug happens. In one layout, I only have a Header part, no Body part, since it's just a custom search form that displays results in other layouts. When I am viewing more than 8001 records at a time in this layout, any fields viewed as popup menus don't work at all. Any edit fields work oddly in that they never show a flashing I-Beam cursor and never give a visible selection, but I can click in them and edit. I just upgraded to FMP 7 (converted my FMP 6 databases) and I have 2 related databases (Projects and Invoices). When I try to edit anything in my Invoices database now, I get an error: "This record cannot be modified in this window because it is already being modified in another window.". I've read through all the posts I could find regarding fonts but did not see this one. It doesn't *appear* to be related to the font smoothing issue. I commonly create layouts for printed reports that have 7 and 8 point text. It seems that Filemaker gets a little confused when displaying on the screen text this small. Consistently I will see any number of the following: 1. Extra space after the last character in a text object. In this case the text insertion cursor will blink in the extra space (as if there were three or four spaces after the last character), but when you press the backspace key will delete the last character. If you don't use a Commit Records/Requests script step after a Set Field step, FM 7 will not exit the record, even if you weren't in it to begin with. This is much different than previous versions where you could take it for granted that a refresh would be forced as long as you didn't use a Go to Field [field] step in your script and had forced an exit of the record at the beginning of the script.
