How can continue typing text at second row in layout mode. In v6 that was Enter key at middle of keyboard, but in V7 - not. I use Windows.

hi!, I hope somebody can help me. I am trying to open a file on mac osx. The file is 12.5MB. I just would go up to the password window and when entered it would give a msg " FILEMAKER UNEXPECTEDLY QUIT". I recover bur not a thing!. I have a Calendar Database file that I am trying to network over 2 computers. With the files to be shared residing on computer A (FM6), it can't be opened via Open Remote. The same when it is residing on computer B(FM5.5). When it resides on computer C (FM5.5) (a laptop), it can be accessed by both A & B. Computer C cannot access it if it resides on either A or B. I think I have everything set the same, but appently am overlooking something to get it to work as I want. Ideally computer C won't have to be in the equation as I was just using it for testing and it's the only one that will allow access to the files from the other 2. Any clues as to what I'm missing…

I'm new to Filemaker Pro 7 but have been using FMP since version 4. I'm confident I've understood the basic paradigm changes introduced by FMP 7. When defining tables, WHY is there no "Duplicate" button? It seems like a glaring oversight to me that there's no way to simply clone tables within a file. Am I supposed to re-enter a series of fields over and over again if I want several similar-but-different tables? Suppose I have a group of logging/administrative fields I want in every table, such as DateModified, ModifiedBy, etc. etc. I have to go into every table and add those by hand?!! Hi folks, I created an appointment book solution for a spa/salon that works well as is but is a little slow for their (and my) liking. There are 20 employees with various schedules. The appointments are booked in 15 minute increments and are added, removed, and adjusted constantly. I have used 20 portals to show each employees schedule on the screen with 5 portals showing at a time. Initially, this worked wonderfully as we used finds to seek out openings for particular services and/or employees. The calendar goes out 8 months into the future and you can imagine some of the finds taking quite a while (there are 56 15-minute blocks in a day * 20 employees * 8 months of 7-…

I have a form in which users must enter data into a series of fields. I want to make sure that users have to enter information into all relevant fields. It should work as follows; If a user enters data into "field 2" they must also complete "field 1". At the moment many users are not doing this. Can anyone suggest a solution?

Well, I would say that I am a fairly proficient developer in filemaker 6. I'm not and expert but I know my way around, and I have created some pretty complex solutions. Filemaker 7 is baffling me though. Thing as simple as relationships have me scratching my head. Maybe I'm just too use to 6, and I'm not seeing simple things. Anyway, my question is; can anyone recomend a book that would be good for a user at my level. I don't need a "beginners guide" or anything like that. I need a book that is targeted for someone that knows 6 pretty well and would like to learn 7. If anyone has any recomendations that would be great.

Just started tinkering with FM7 yesterday. I've gotten a pretty good start for not really knowing what I'm doing! But now I'm stumped on something specific, so if anyone could point me to a good tutorial or a thread that I've missed in my search, that'd be great. Here's my problem: I'm trying to create a project management database. I've got most of it going good. In the main screen (project), I want to add at least one task, but have the ability to add more. Also, it isn't just a list of tasks - in addition to the task name, it also needs to display cost, hours, rate and notes. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

We are migrating our web server from Windows to Linux, and are moving our FMU package to a Windows 2003 machine where the web server will proxy it. FMU runs fine, as far as operation goes, but when it starts up, it will not find the FM server, even though it is in the same subnet. When I click on "Local hosts" nothing shows up in the list. If I click on the server name (I've added it to the list) it finds it just fine. The 2003 box can do both forward and reverse lookups on the name/ip of the FM server, and can connect to it fine when explicitly given the name, but it will not find it automatically which prevents FMU from starting up at boot.* Any ideas? …

We have recently installed FMP6 on a Windows XP desktop to print magnet striped cards to a Fargo DTC525 printer. The printer setup is fine, and the layouts look great. The problem is the mag stripe. To encode the data, the printer needs ASCII characters with specified leads and endings. Piece of cake, I made calc fields to create that text for each record. Getting the printer to encode them properly, however, has eluded me. I can print just text to the cards and it looks great. But when I add my calculated text strings to the layout, I lose the printed text and fail to encode the cards properly. When the encoder puts data on the tracks and I run them throug…

(Mac OSX; FMP 6) One of our users had an FMP 6 file open when her computer crashed. Now when we go to open the file, FMP just shuts down: we get the splash screen and the password box, but when we enter the password and hit enter, FMP closes and gives us the error message "The application FileMaker Pro has unexpectedly quit"... Hello, I am trying to query through a table record by record to add up a certain field of the records that qualify under the if statement: If ( qualification1 and qualification2 and qualification3; Sum ( add up certain field of all the records that made it through the if statement ) ; 0 ) However, the if statement goes through the first record only and, if it qualified, adds up all of the table's entries, regardless of whether they qualified individually. I am in desparate trouble. I have a nine file data base that tracks donations and participant activities for a non-prof that helps cancer patients. It has been running on FMP 5.5. I have to use 5.5 because that's what they have on their PCs. This data base runs on their Windows machines, while I have been updating it at home on my Mac (OS 10.3.3, G4 Dual, 1.5GB RAM). There's nothing I hate worse than someone hanging up the phone before even taking the call which I continually seem to get when I call Filemaker at (800) 325-2747 and pick option 1. I also really hate to get customer service representatives that are obviously poorly trained and cannot actually provide any service. I was attempting to simply get a receipt for a package I bought from them valued at several thousand dollars. I wasted about 35 minutes on the phone before finally giving up and trying through email. Hello all... I have recently converted and filemaker 5.5 file to filemaker 7.0. I have a field that points to a URL that a script opens in a web browser. Since the upgrade my URLs are not working. It appears that filemaker 7 is putting an extra / in the url that is in my file. I've installed Filemaker 7 Advanced Server and recently updated to 7.0v3. Filemaker 7 Adv Server is currently residing on a Windows 2000 sp4 member server. I have set the options in Filemaker Server to use external authentication. I set the directory settings and the event log says it registered with the directory successfully. Hi all, I want to add some fields to an existing database of ours. When I go into the client and do: File, Define Fields. I get the following error: "The command cannot be used with a shared file. To use this command, make sure that you are the only user of "MainMenu". Filemaker the program is not current installed on our server (at least i dont think so) its just the services that are on there. Do I need to install it on the server and run it from there? I am developing 7 web based questionnaires - with data being stored in FMP databases - using FileMaker Pro 6 Unlimited. Several of the databases have very similar structures/questions - what I want to know is would it be better to have one database for each questionnaire or to have several questionnaires sharing the same database (though not using all the fields). I want to minimise the server response times - will have thousands of respondents - keen that they get their pages served up to them as rapidly as possible. I've just bought fm pro 7 after having installed and tried the free download. I had the same problem occur in both the trial and purchased versions. The program installed OK and I was able to use it initially, but it later refused to load - it hangs on Auto Update. I'm not sure when the problem occurred with the trial version, but with the purchased version it happened after the machine was in hibernation for about an hour (I'm using a P4 Toshiba running XP). The error says that Filemaker has detected a problem and will now close. After that I can't get back into the program. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling many times but no result. FMP 6 for Classic (9.2.2) is running very slow on the G4 dual 867GHz that I'm using at work. The problem is in just about all features I've tested. For example, if I click any menu item, it takes ~10 secs for the menu to display. If I switch modes, it takes about 10 seconds for that mode to display. I've trashed the FileMaker Pro 6 folder and reinstalled; the problem persisted. I've installed FileMaker Pro 6 for Mac OS X. It runs properly under Jaguar.8. If I use the latter, however, the host from which I need to access a shared database does not display in the Hosts dialog. Any suggestions??? Many thanks in advance and cheers!

I have a Text field where I can record activity- calls to clients, projects etc. Each activity starts with the date (as 12/10/05 but in the text box). I now need to sort the records by the date of the activity entered. Of course, when I do a sort at the moment, it does it by the first digits- which is completely wrong for the months & years. Is there any way to force Sort to recognise the first 6 characters as a date & correctly Sort?

I am trying to get a database to work in multiple countries. Working with dates has proven to be troublesome. What I find is that if I use the GetAsText(date), the result is always US format, no matter what country system the database is running on and no matter whether I use Set Use System Formats [On] or not. Is the GetAsText function simply paying no attention to the local system format, i.e. is this a bug, and just using ghe format the DB was originally created in, or am I missing something?

After poking around for several hours and looking over the documentation, I cannot see how to update a set of records, like the SQL UPDATE statement. I'm a newbie in need of some help... I'm trying to figure out a script to copy an entire record from one layout and table and paste it on another layout from another table. It's for an inventory db I'm trying to develop and I want to transfer one record from one location's inventory to another location's. Filemaker Pro takes about 3-4 minutes to startup but once its up it runs ok. Has anyone ran into this before? I have read that it has something to do with the system fonts so so i reloaded them but still no luck. Maybe I'm doing something wrong or maybe this is not even the right path. As I am setting up a contacts section of a database, I'd like to store Word documents associated with individual contacts. (Each contact has a distinct Word document associated with them.) Furthermore, I'd like to be able to click on these documents to have them automatically open in Microsoft Word. I've read another post on this, but apparently even need the obvious spelled out for me . This database will not be on the web or networked outside of this one computer, if that matters. Hello- I have a database with 3 separate layouts. They are all different sizes so that they can open on top of one another allowing me to see the window/layout behind the active layout. The problem is that when I click on the script to open a window it RESIZES the main window/layout to the same size as the smaller layout that should remain in front. When this happens, I can no longer see the main layout in back. Why is it doing this? Any ideas would be very appreciated...

Hi all. I've been able to get my FM solution up and running. It's not the best, but it's functional and I've come to rely heavily on it. I've got Backup backing up my database every night to keep data catastrophes from occurring. Now I've got some strange things going on with my database, though. One of my table has lost all it's fields! The records are still there, as shown in the "define database -> tables" tab, but the fields are all gone. I do most of my work at Little House (for Senior Citizens [over 50]) in Menlo Park, CA. Our Computer Lab has about 20 Macs; one uses OS 7.5.2 (the good old reliable standby), several use OS 9.2, and 5 use OS 10.3.8. FileMaker Pro Vers.4 only works on OS 9 and below. Although OS 9 is also available on the 5 macs using OS X, I have trouble printing directly from FM because the printer network is not set up to work with OS 9. I'm looking for some direction on a good Backup Software. FM help suggests:A good third-party backup program should provide multiple copies of a database as sources for restoration. A scheme involving rotating backups can accomplish this. Typically, this method involves separate backup copies over no less than a two-week rotation. I just bought Academic FileMaker Pro 7. I've installed it as the manual instructs, but now when i click on the launch icon, the splash screen comes up, then disappears, and nothing further happens!! The program doesn't open/launch! So i download the updater to see if that would help: 7.0v3, and try and install that, but it says it needs to be installed over v1, v1a, or v2. but i can't find any updaters on the net of those versions, at all! Newbie here. In learning the app initially, I used File?Save a copy as a few time s before I attempted a sweeping chage to what I had in place. Now, under the Layout arrow on the left tool bar, all those Copies showe up as Tables to view. However, if I go to DEFINE TABLE, they do not show up there. As I did not find a general filemaker catagory I am posting here.. Has anyone heard that filemaker is planning another release? not a patch as in 7.01 ... 7.02 etc but a full number release such as 7.5 or 8.0? Our company is on a yearly maintanance schedule with filemaker for 50 seats as well as server and server advanced.. The maintenance is for 1 year and will cost us over $3000.00 ..this will allow us to have any upgrades to a new release for a period of 1 year. Does anyone have any idea what this message really means? "FileMaker Pro cannot host files because another user is already hosting files using FileMaker Pro on this computer. Multi-user (shared) files will not be available to FileMaker Pro guests." V6 on Citrix. Note that we do not use Server. There were two users sharing 4 files. The third, and subsequent, user(s) get this message. Oh, and multi-user files are available for some things. Am not after a solution to the problem - the network+Citrix is a shambles. Desperately waiting for replacement gear/software. I'd just like to know what the message means. It is ambiguous.

ok fm7 is making me quite self-aware of my lack of independence. it seems that every time i try to do anything in the define databases dialog (tables/fields/relationships) and close it i spend a solid 20-30 seconds rebuilding my dependencies. i don't have all that much to my system yet -- about 20 mostly empty tables and a tangle of various relationships but no external files. my machine is not a speed demon (G4/400) but c'mon, this is such a drag to work like this. anyone else experiencing this speed hit whenever messing with the relationship graph?

I have a pop up menu that uses a value list: "1 Day, 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, exact date". These are the values for the next call to be made under the "call menu" field. Let's say I choose "1 week." When i click that pop up menu and choose "1 week" i want a different field ("next call") to display the result of the current date + 7 days. Let's say i choose "3 months." When chosen, i want the "next call field" to display the current date + 3 months. Let's say i choose "exact date." Noob here, Maybe someone can help. First off, let me mention that companies try to sell zip code lists when you can just download one from census.gov. Anyway, i have fields in my database that have city, st, zip....I have a seperate database file of zipcodes that have fields for zip and city along with a lot of other garbage (longitude, etc...no need 4 that). How do i configure my database to call on the zipcode database file so that when i enter a zipcode in my database that it autocompletes my city field automatically? Thanks

I need to deselect everything on a window. I need this because I'm popping up a new window with some editing controls and I get an error that the record can't be modified because it is being modified in another window (the original one). However if by hand I click on an empty area of the orignal window..and then pop up the new one...I can edit the fields. So I need to programmatically deselect everything. Help! ..thanks...Sandy

All, I was having some user interface performance problems (see "Yet Another Performance Question" in this forum), and I think I found something that might be very useful to folks. It appears that if I choose a font that has no associated PostScript font (i.e., it's only a screen font), it really impacts the performance of scrolling, typing, and changing focus from field to field. When I fill a field with text using a font with a PostScript font file, UI performance is snappy. Greetings! New FMP 7 user and need some guidance. I have a layout that contains several fields that pull data from a single table. Hi Folks, I'm stymied. I have 16 related files that make up a database solution. Most of the "work" that the people in my office do is from one of these files (Members). I have a script that runs whenever you open the Members file which opens all of the other files. THis used to work like a charm, but since I recently expanded the database (enlarging it from 8 related files to 16 related files), this script has been crashing at random times (not regularly so that I can isolate the problem, but sporadically). The script basically says: Open (file1) Open (file2) Open (file3) etc... GoTo Layout (main) Toggle (maximize) THen it performs a find for reco…

FileMaker was working just fine. Then yesterday I got a message on the screen, in a strange black and white window, that I need to restart the computer. so I did. FileMaker does not work anymore. I can click on the app icon, or in the dock. The splash screen comes up, and then it just stops. I removed both com.filemaker.filemakerpro.plist and com.filemaker.pro7.plist from the ~/library/preferences. I reinstalled the program. I updated it again to 7v3. I fixed permissions. It still does not work. What should I do now? OS X 10.3

I purchased FM7 a few months ago. While I had experimented with the trial versions over the last few years, I hadn't really done much with Filemaker since version 3 (whoa! a long time ago). I then convinced my primary client that he could use Filemaker Pro to manage some key (but simple) business data. Hi, While I was out of town, the server crashed, and the people in office recovered the files half on Macs & half on PCs without correcting the date format on the PCs. Now, the files randomly have different date formats of MM-dd-yyyy or dd-MM-yyyy which is driving me crazy for my date sets and period based searches. Does anyone know how I can set the date format of the file? Thanks in advance, Partha ............. Thanks to transpower I made progress on my FMP 7 project. However, there are two new problems I ran into and cannot yet solve satisfactory: 1) How can I display multiple records from table rows in layout rows? - I previously assumed that adding a portal would do the trick, but for some reason I cannot highlight the table to use for the record input in the portal menu. Does anyone have a TAPI phone system installed that has popup? I have been speaking to a company (http://www.cti-uk.com/pop.asp) and the software they have is an active x can you embed this into filmaker and use them? Hello All, I have read this note about filemaker maintenance somewhere: I really don't know what can be considered 'regular maintenance' at this point. Maybe I can create a compacted copy, or create an empty clone and import only data from the original file.. I don't know. On previous versions of Filemaker server, when the Database crashed it would re-open the files and perform a consistency check and check every file before it opened it. In Filemaker 7 however, I dont see this happening, is feature lost or is there a way to turn it back on?

I am working on an order entry application. When a user creates a new order, I didn't want the order number to be generated until she hit a confirm button that performed a commit statement. I set up the Order# to be auto entered serial # on commit. I create a new order and start entering in info into some of the fields. If I click out of a field, the order # is generated. Is there a way to force the commit to not happen until they hit the confirm button? Thanks! John

I'm trying to do a mail merge (Microsoft Word 2003) using FMD as a data source. I have installed the ODBC driver and believe that it is properly configured. At least I have followed the instructions on the FM CD. I can see the driver as a System DSN entry. But here's the problem. When setting up my merge, I select the proper driver as a data source, and a dialog comes up asking me for a user name and password. I have never set up any accounts in filemaker, so I don't know what to enter. I entered Admin as a default, but that didn't work. Can someone help me here? I think everything is in place, but I don't know how to connect. Thanks! Brudderman

Hi All, Does anyone know of the existance of a database out there to track the progress of a project, whilst not allowing certain fields to be populated until certain other fields are filled. The user would be warned what fields need to be filled if they tried to go past without filling them. This would happen at roughly different stages through the job. The purpose of this database is to track the processes involved in the production of television advertisements, and to limit the producer skipping past steps involved in the production of a commercial. I have a problem where I am running multiple solutions on the same Server. If I use File References to open these solutions, *sometimes* I get the License Key Conflict error dialog, warning me that somebody else is already using that license key. The machine I am told that is already using it, is mine. This includes if I use the Open Recent files item or opener files. For example, using the machine Mymac1, I go Open Recent >> Solution1, and it opens fine (I provide password etc.). Then I go Open Recent >> Solution 2, and I get the 'maximum number of licensed users are using this key' error window, and 'the conflict occurred with user "Mymac1"'. …

We have almost 40,000 books for sale in a fmp data base. I created a FMPcalculation field that generates the specific URL address for each title. (I upload that info to froogle to be listed there.) We have moved our inventory to a shopping cart site. I am under the impression that if I create a list of all our titles, linking each title to its URL and post it as part of the sitemap at the shopping cart site, eventually search engines like google will pick up the titles. I use Claris Home Page to create html. It would be painfully time-consuming to make a link for each title. I have a runtime solution that is asking to connect to the internet via port 5003 and wants to accept connections from internet opening port 1201. Any ideas as to why it is doing this and how to stop it. I see no reason why FM runtime should be asking for internet access. Thanks.

Hello, I'm having some trouble getting an ODBC import working in Filemaker Pro 7 on OS X 10.3. I've installed several ODBC DSN's using the Apple ODBC adminstrator. I use both PostgreSQL and MySQL using the Actual Technologies driver and the MySQL driver (3.51). The DSN's test ok and odbctest works from teh commandline, but none of the DSNs are listed in the Filemaker Pro 7 import ODBC list. Why isn't FMP seeing the installed ODBC DSN's? -matthew

Hello all I'm a newbie to filemaker but have recently upgraded from v5 to v7.03. I had a major problem logging into the database which I think I've solved now but I guess only time will tell. Now, I've got a couple of issues with some of date fields, which are displaying ? (question marks) instead of the date but if you click in the date field the date's actually there. Just interested really as a newbie. In the past when looking at fairly well known database the character size entry seemed to be almost mandatory at same time as giving the field in a table its name. I find that it is fairly well hidden in Filemaker with a default of 1, which can be amended. Does anyone know the thinking behind this please? For example by just leaving the default in place, does the database eventually take up more space than if one had carefully thought of a fair size for the field in the first place. Have been advised that if I wanted to design a database, sell and maintain it for an individual or small business (without a NETWORK) then I should purchase Filemaker Developer 7. A study book of Filemaker Pro 7 that I am using, whilst describing the Edit Menu explains that standard commands such as Cut, Copy and Paste etc are there. It goes on to say that the Export Field Contents (still under the Edit heading) lets you export the contents of a field to a file that you can select. Hi, I'm kinda in the dark about how volume licensing of filemaker works. For example if I buy the small team bundle and decide to add another user can I just buy another copy of filemaker pro and as long as the server sees 5 different licenses it'll be ok? Also is the amount for volume licensing the same at any place I try to buy Filemaker from? Don't know if this is FM 7 specific but, here is the issue. I have a large text filed (multiple paragraphs) that I wand to format the display as "full align", as oppose to left align. When I choose the "align full" option the right edge of the text is clipped (partial characters) on the right side of the field. I see this either displayed or printed. I've tried a separate lay out using a merge field, same issue, right side characters are clipped. Any thoughts?

When I migrated an old patient database from FMP 3 MAC to FM7 Win the form would start to jumble when we would scroll down the page. The weird thing is it only does it on two of the three PCs on our small network. The PC it doesnt do it on is identical to the others except for the fact that is has a flat screen monitor. Does anyone think its a refresh rate problem?? I cant get into the inner workings of the PC to check video settings b/c the IT guys have it locked down.
