I'm developing a solution with 8 related files. I'll set the initial passwords (one each for manager, user, and read-only) to be the same on all 8 files, so that opening the master file will automatically allow access to all the related. files. After purchasing the solution, the database manager (i.e., whomever has the high-level password) can change the passwords if they want. I hate to make that person go through ALL 8 RELATED FILES to change all the passwords! That will look amateurish at best, and could cause problems at worst if the person makes any mistakes while changing all those passwords, which is easy to do for someone not familiar with Filemaker etc. To s…

I have an application that contains 6 files. All 6 files are opened with one file's opening script. Each file is password protected (they all share the same password). I have a "master" password for designing the files and the operators have a password that restricts their access. To make it easier for my operators, I need a script that eliminates the need for the Operators to enter a password for each file as it opens. I'd like them to only be required to enter their password one time. Any ideas?

I'm new to FMForums and couldn't figure out which forum this question relates to. Is there a way to freeze a record after some field in that record is set? We have several databases that have records that should no longer be modified while later ones in the list still are active. Thanks for the help. Hope to return the favor soon.

I'm selling a 1-year licence for people to use an application that I developed. After that year, I need them to repurchase the licence to continue to use that application. I'm looking for some way to place a message on the screen after they have had the application for one year and must now send me some $$. Or better yet, they must call me for a new access code to use the application. Any ideas?

I have a large database consisting of approximately 80 files each file has up to 12 different passwords limiting the amount of access to the file. As a college we have recently been audited and one of the areas that was raised in the audit was the fact we don't change passwords enough and we should be changing passwords every couple of months. This means that I have to unshare everything to change passwords, which takes me approximately 1/2 day. I have heard of some software that I can purchase that will do this for me but is it possible to run a script that will individually go through each file and change the password. i have already limited staff access by the …

we have a need to lock up our solution short of using dongles. we need to expire the passwords every year and also have a time-bomb on our installer so that the solution is installed x number of days after it was purchased. if something like this already exists i'd love to purchase it and connect it to our solution. if not i would like to have someone else bid on building the functionality into our existing solution. thanks, jodin ravia [email protected]

I'm a new user to filemaker pro and am developing a site for McGill university. I set the access privaleges to a given password, but whenever i load it in Internet explorer and enter username and password i get unkown error 972. Netscape Navigator loads it fine on the otherhand. As does my internet explorer from home. I guess this may be an IE update problem but this would represent serious problems exspecially with students with older PCS that cant get the updates. Is there another way of fixing this?

I have a Mutli-database system, which are all secured with passwords. For the most part, the interface is seemless and the user works in one window, but the system asks for a password everytime another DB is opened. Hi, Can anybody please explain to me how to add my copyright information to the database I have created? I need to do this before creating the runtime program on CD. Does this info get entered somewhere in the help>about> section? I know the FileMaker info has to stay put, but I need to have my copyright info somewhere in my program before selling any CD's. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'm new at the password thing, so excuse my ignorance... We are going to be using a consultant to help us automate our invoicing system and we want to protect some information contained in a specific field. Can anyone explain to me how to do this? I'v tried creating a master password and then a "user" password. When I try to "limit access" to the "user" from seeing this particular field, I somehow end up having <<access denied>> on every single field in the database. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! Kristine

We have a production database of about 35 related files. Yesterday, someone on the network threw away the "main" database and I was forced to restore from the previous day's backup. Here's my question. Is it possible to make the files "invisible" to users while still giving them access to the files. I know it is possible to access Filemaker Server without being logged onto the actual server volume by using the "Hosts" button. However, with most of our users, the process of using the "Hosts" button may be difficult to remember. Is there a script or some other automated procedure that could make it a quick procedure? Thanks for the info.

I apologize because I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find it in the forums. I have a database running and am using the Web Security Database to handle security. Currently, I have only entered a few usernames and passwords into the database, so only a few people can access it. What I want is for people to be able to create their own logins and passwords over the web. I dont want to have to manually add logins and passwords to the Web Security Database. Is this feasible at all? Thanks in advance, Timmy.

So. I've read some documentation on how to do Record by Record protection using Custom Web Publishing. Basically, what I've understood is that you set up a "password" field in your records. Then, when performing searches, etc., you also search on that password. In this way, only records that match by password as well as whatever you're searching for will be returned. In effect, this is what I have set up. However, when browsing the site, it is very easy to alter searches manually and thus bypass the whole password thing. The end result is that anyone who has a valid password to my database can access any record within it. This is not good. Any suggestions…

I am in the proccess of developing a rather large system for a client of mine. My client has recently requested some advanced security features that will require the implementation of a custom security system. I am well versed in most FileMaker related areas, but custom security systems are new to me. Yes, I know I am in for a TON of rewrite. I get paid by the hour so, that's not an issue . I have learned from experience that my first approach at solving a FMP problem, is not always the BEST way to do it. Becuase of the system size, and the amount of rewrite involved, I want to make sure that I do not overlook anything. Basically, this is what I have in m…

I'm designing my own login script. It's a combination of an admin password and a user password (filemaker security system), scripts that block access and the verification of a entered password for my own login script. I'm using a script that searches a user database for the entered password, if it finds the entered password the username and password are stored in a global field called username and password. And passed to the other databases with the command set field (also stored in global fields). The problem I have with this solution is that it works wonderfully with one user. Butt when I share the database on a FileMaker server I can't pass the informat…

about 6 months ago we moved all our FM dbs onto filemaker server 5.0v2 Some are passwd protected, some are not. One of the passwd protected dbs has two levels of users with passwords. The master and the user. For some reason, as yet unknown, this db when opened bypasses the prompt for passwd entry and deafaults to the user level. Hence its not possible eany more to log with the master passwd. I have tried shutting down the server and opening up this db with fmp v5 unlimited, but the same problem arises. How do I get the passwd prompt back? thanks in advance.

Using FM 5.5 as multiuser with three computers linked with AppleTalk...I think! -) I have login file with same passwords as my FM database. Users open login file from work stations, FM Open=> Host=> Open login file =>enter appropriate password. Once in login file, they give their username and unique login password. If that checks out, they can click to go on into the FM db. The password entered when they opened the login file, is set into the password for the db and then opens it with the appropriate access privileges as setup in db. HERE's the problem: When this is done on the host computer, it works…

One thing about group privileges in FM just hit me hard. I have social security number as primary key and some user shall not be able to see it so I also have a keynumber thas uniqe for each post. I thought that it would be as simple as to set the groupprivileges on that field. I then discover that the field can't be used in any relationship and this puts me in trouble. I don't know the English term for the choice but I think you can understand what alternative it is. My question is if there is another way to make this field "hidden" without creating a new layout? Another question is if there is some way to change the size of the privileg…

Hi- I'm trying to limit the access of certain records for the users of the database I'm creating. Basically, my database is a log open to "x" number of people. When they open the database I'd like only the records they enter to appear. I want to restrict peoples access to certain layouts, but if they are not allowed in a certain layout I want a message to come up allong the lines of "you are not allowed....." I understand the access privileges bit, and how to show messages etc, but not how to establish within a script whether someone has access privileges. I this possible? It is mainly to avoid the horrible grey screen with the 'no access' message that someone gets if they do not have access. Thanks [ April 17, 2002, 04:08 AM: Message edited by: Tom England ]

Hi, small Q. Is it possible to re-login a FMfile protected with a password, without re-opening it? I have developed five files all related and doing one thing or another to a main file. When a user opens the main file, it runs a script that opens the other files as well. I have set passwords and groups up in the main file which work great with the main file only! Question: How can I prevent certain users from getting into some of the related files and or only certain layouts in some related files? I tried setting up the same password and groups for each file hoping for mutual interconnectivity (I just made that up) but it doesn't work. I'm missing something basic. Can someone help?

You've already answered question #1. "#2) for local data access (and remote) require a password to get into the database." You can create a button/link for "Admin" (or whatever) which takes client to a name / password entry schema. You can create your own security protocol within FMPro. I do not have the link for "admin", but I do use my own security protocol. Visit my site to see one example. Register a name and password (doesn't need to be you). That is a two-step process. From "Run another script" you will be asked to enter that username and password. A search is performed on that which will allow a number to be incremented or which will ask you to re-su…

Assuming they change layouts through buttons, script the button to trap for the proper Groups, and if they don't qualify for the layout, do a "Show Message" step (to tell them they're not entitled to go there) and then exit the script. That way, the only time it even tries to go to the layout is if the user qualifies for access.

Here is one I dont quite know how to handle. Serving up a database on the web with v5.5. Works fine. Database comes right up. I want to make a little change. I want to add a layout as the default with a spot for a "Login" name with a submit button. If the login name matches a corresponding field from another layout I then want it to proceed to that layout and to JUST that particulat record. My thinking is then I can have clients log in and it would be a way that they go to the specific record JUST for them in my client layout, and then they dont have access or see any other clients records. Is this possible? Larry

Well here I go - I know that you can set up a default password for each database. But..... My application is only accessed via a gateway that I have written seperately - It requires the user to login with a password and userid. Hence gaining access to the main application from where its run. What would be nice if that password could be used as the default password for each of the other databases in my application. Can this be done and how? Another problem I have is when I stop exporting via the security option the users can no longer create records - This I find strange??? Hope someone can help Cheers Michael

Generally what I do is to create a relationship between the access field and a constant field. So that the relationship is only valid when the AllowAccess field is equal to the Constant field. You can then stick the field in a one row portal based upon this relationship. This way only when the AllowAccess field is set can you see the field in question.

The reason I am posting here is that apparently the application I developed "crashes" when the user logs in with a certain password and not with another... I am baffled. I can't make the application crash. I have defined 4 levels of password (no group). 1. No restriction (developer) 2. Can browse, edit, delete, create, print, export (application "manager") 3. Can browse, edit, print, export (writer) 4. Can browse, print, export The crashes happens with the 4th level only. It does not occur consistently (but often enough to annoy the users...). The passwords with multiple groups are not behaving as I think they should. They are not even behaving consistently with one another, nor with what the Access Overview dialog reports. _____________________________ Here's my understanding of the situation: if Password P is assigned to Groups F and G, and F and G have different access to layout L (for example, F=r/o & G=full) then... Hello, We recently upgraded several databases from FileMaker v3.0 to FileMaker v5.0, that were protected with 'master' passwords. Unfortunately the master passwords no longer work in FM 5.0 at master password-level access -- they only work with restricted (although still writable) access. It's as if the v3.0 implementation of 'master password' is not really master password-equivalent in v5.0, but something much weaker. So now we cannot access these databases at the 'master password' level, when we enter what used to be the master password, we just get restricted access. We've tried this on FM 5.0, and FM 5.5, all running Windows NT 4.0. Anyone have any advice?? Tha…

MAC user of FM 5 I'm looking for a plugin or other method to do 2 things. 1) prevent a user of a file to 'save a copy as' when they have access to the entire file. 2) have file quit working entirely after 365 days of use by specific user. I'm clueless to a quick and easy fix. Any help? Thanks in advance

Hello, I'm running FMPro 5.5v1 (Unlimited) but I'm finding it impossible to disable passwords for some users. Using the security overview, (File->Access Priveledges->Overview) I've found it impossible to disable passwords for certain groups. The result is that all passwords are enabled for all groups, which is really lousy. I've read the user guide, and supposedly using the "check mark" cursor over the round circle next to each password, you should be able to toggle passwords as accessible or not accessible, but this simply doesn't work. Clicking on the word of the password or on the circle using the check cursor does nothing - the password was accessible, and …

Hello For a long time that I don't do any db, but I have been asked to update one db I made 4 years ago in fm3. And I run into a huge problem. I forgot the master password! This means I cannot access any layout or script definition. This also means I can't do any updating in the db! I emphasise that I have access to all the records [i can even do an export on the records if I want to] and the db is fully functional, only the layouts and scripts are locked. Is there anyway to solve this? It was me who set up the password [and forgot it... I know it is really dum] and to my knowledge nobody else remembers it or wrote it down [phoned all that could]. I will apreci…

Hello, I have a need to allow the data on certain layout to be editable up to a time at which that data is used to create an invoice. After the invoice is created that data needs to be "locked". I know I can accomplish this by directing users to a locked version of the layout and an unlock version based on a status field. My problem starts when users have performed a search and found an unlocked record. If they use the keyboard command to perform another search from the unlocked layout and find a record that has the status of being locked, it will be displayed in the unlocked layout. And my protection is out the window... Any ideas, please don't suggest asking user…

Situation: I have 1 main database that contains all of the actual Data and is the main one for use. As it stands the users can not create or modify layouts in this database. They have requested they be able to create new layouts if needed. So... I created another database with a serial number type of relation to the main one, so if they create/delete/duplicate a record in the Main DB it will do the same in the other. They currently have full access in the second DB but not the Main DB. Problem: I need to be able to prevent them from creating/deleting/duplicating records in the second DB, and still allow them to be able to create Layouts. If they do create on…

I have a job tracking database for our small graphic design studio. I have created a checkbox field that when checked should lock the record to make it uneditable for users with the standard password. I am seeing some strange behavior where theis seems to work when I first engage it, but later or the next day, "unlocked" records are unmodifiable.Any idaes on how to straighten this out? There are only 3 of us so the database is hosted by the first user, not through FMP server. Would a change in host have an effect on this action? I wouldn't think so, but I'm at a loss as to why the behavior seems to lock up all records.

I would like to set a password for a user and allow them to modify only selected fields in a layout. They would be able to see the other fields but only modify their specific fields. I cannot lock the other fields because others will log in and need to modify them. Do I have to create unique layouts for each user? I hope this is clear.

Hello Everyone! I hope I have found the right forum. I have a solution that I would like to have multiple users be able to set up profiles on it. Heres what I mean: Is there a way to have a login screen? If it is a new user, then have them go to a profile setup screen where they can enter their name, address, etc? The reason for this is so that when a user logs in, the letters all have a header with that user's name and address and signature on them. These users don't necessarily have to be on a network, it is possible that they will access the solution from the same workstation. Now that I think about it, it seems quite involved, so any help that you all can offer …

i have a timesheet database for employees... I would like the employees to only have access to their own records and also for filemaker to only list their records and sort based on date. There are 9 employees and i have assigned each to a group and have made the appropriate passwords for them... however, i have not been able to figure out how to create a script that will find and sort based on their groupname? It is my impression that the find command performs the last find you did and you cannot set it to perform 9 different searches in one script? for instance...if i have an employee field... i would like to say... groupname is Robert and Employee field is RM the…

I am trying to set up my remote users such that they aren't coming into the filemaker server 5.0.3 on the default port of 5003. All I am changing is port address translation for port 5003. Setting it so that 9999=5003, both UDP and TCP. When this is done, it doesn't transmit the DB list. If feels like a UDB problem, but I have a sneaky suspicion that FM isn't able to handle this for some unknown reason. Any thoughts, Ideas? experiences of your own? clients coming in using both 5.5 and 5.0 on 9.1, and 10.1.1 (macs only, so far). Server is OS 9.2.2, running 5.0.3. thanks, st

How can I make so that when I want different people to have different access levels from the web they lick on the database name and it asks for a password. Then, depending on what the password is it will give them various levels of access. The only thing I have found so far is it asks you the access level the first time you open the database file. Does anybody know how to do this? Thanks a lot!

Can anyone tell me how I can ensure that people do not delete records from my database but still allow them to delete an unfinished record. To explain I have a database of credit notes which has certain fileds that must be filled in e.g. ammount. My problem is I can forsee the users entering a credit note and realising that they do not have all the information then giving up. Maybe delaying the creation for a couple of days. This would not be a desirable way of leaving things. I can not leave it that someone can delete an old credit note either for obvious reasons. Has anyone any suggestions?

I'm guessing that the answer is "can't be done", but maybe someone knows a trick I don't. Any way to change Access Privileges (create a new password, modify settings for a Group, etc) while a database is hosted by FileMaker Pro Server 5.5? I know that if I connect as the sole user with full access, I can define fields and do most everything else, but being able to add in a new user without shutting everything down would sure be nice!

Most people here are unfamiliar with Instant Web Publishing primarily because Custom Publishing is where the actions is. For custom to work, users only need BROWSE and EXPORT privileges as an absolute minimum. Try it with Instant.

Hi, We have developed this database and hit apon a snag. We are using the web security database to restrict access to a website. Users register, and the username is generated from their first portion of their e-mail address. We have now discovered after using this system for about 2 months that the Web Security doesn't handle multiple usernames. Is there a way around this? Or is it a matter of making sure that there are always unique usernames? I assume I am going to have to add a script that checks to see if the username is already taken, and if so, append it.

Well I looked through this forum but I didn't see this specific issue addressed. Warning; TOTAL IDIOT question ahead; So I have a solution with several files, it's small, but I made it for a couple of guys who know very little about computers so I wanted to make it as idiot proof as possible; in particular, I wanted to make *sure* they didn't go into Layout mode where they could do some damage. The only easy way I could see to do this was to password protect the files to allow access to layout mode only if the developer password were entered. Here's the stupid part; When they crank open the first database, whenever it access a related file, it prompts for the passw…

I have some Databases that are used by several users, I need a login and passwords with diferent access levels. I really want is that a customized process where I can manage "login users" and "passwords". Both, "login users" and "passwords" must be unique to each user and they given different access levels. The application I'm developing is "multiusers" so we have FMServer an FMPro 5.0 for that, this makes the application be accessed by the same time for two or more users. I need to record the user who makes changes on any records on the database. I really need your help! Thanks a lot!

If you are setting up your own user access/password system rather than using Filemaker's built-in access privileges, and you allow the users to select their own password, here is a simple calculation to check for insecure passwords. Set up a global field called gInsecureText and enter the following text: "qwertyuiopasdfghjklzxcvbnm poiuytrewqlkjhgfdsamnbvcxz abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba 1234567890987654321" Then you can test a Password as follows: Case(Length(Password)<6 or PatternCount(gInsecureText,Password)>0,"Bad","Good") This returns "Bad" if the user picked a password less than 6 characters, or an easy sequence of keyboard …

"Sorry, Filemaker is unable to update the data this disk is on, click continue to try again" is a frequent, often daily message received from a Filemaker Pro 4.1 webbased database running on a Mac G4 server using Webstar 4.2 and Lasso 3.6. When the error message is displayed, the database becomes unacessible on the web until "ok" is clicked on the webserver keyboard. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to correct this problem would be appreciated. How can I cause a password to expire 1 month after initial use of my runtime solution? Since this solution will be downloaded by different customers at different times, I can't set the expiration date to be the same for all users. Ideally I could establish many passwords. The first password would allow the user to run the solution for days 1-30, the second for days 31-60, etc. Users would have to purchase the new password each month, having been prompted by the solution to remit payment. Perhaps a startup screen could indicate the number of days before the password would expire. At the end of the purchased use the file would lock out the user and nullify the previou…
