Unfamiliar with networking, so here goes... A new (potential) client has several computers on a network, and will be getting FMP (in some version) to run a solution over the (Wintel) network. How many computers should be linked before it's worth buying the Server version, how many can run on the one copy of FMP Server, and what else (if anything) is needed? It would be nice if the FMP website were more informative. Ah well.

Previously, I had two computers hooked up, with the fastest one (running Win2k) acting as the host, and a win98 machine acting as a guest over a TCP/IP ethernet network. I had a new, faster computer donated (this is our reservation system for a Little Theatre) so I decided to use it as the host and the other two as guests. The newest computer is an 850 Mhz Duron processor running Windows ME. Once I got the Windows networking functional, I tried opening the database over the network using the Filemaker "hosts", but could only get the Win98 machine to work. The Win2k machine does not "see" the new computer's files as openable when using Filemaker's Open command. …

Hey, I've written some dbs in FMP - but this is first time when use one in a network. It is not complicated, but works so sloooooooowly (having just 3 comps) - it takes about 6 sec to perform all scripts. DB exists in a server (NT 4.0) - it is run as a host and opened by 2 users as guests. All db consists of 5 files (in FMP called databases). Calculation requires to find some data in other files (using perform external script) and then returns to original file. Why it is so slow? I noticed that being a guest - even when I had opened the other file before (having two files opened) - performing an external file - it reopens the file again from the server (host) and…

I need to build/Share a database. I've got FM5 (Mac and PC) and one other user here, out of the 4 that will need to share this data, as an older version. 1. With so few users, do I need to get FM Server, or can we simply set up one machine to host the data? The usage will be very low, with each photographer updating data one record at a time as a shot is completed, maybe 10 times a day. 2. Will the web companion allow us to build a solution on one system and have that host it as web pages to the others...or is that worth more trouble than a few CAL's would cost us to do it the other way? Thanks thrill seekers!

  12. For all those whose posts I've read here, who are having problems with 5.5 having updated their system to X.1.5 - I got it sorted, finally. The problem was the preferences file for FMPro. I just deleted it and bingo - now FMPRo starts up, just as before. This is in the "Your Username"/Library/Preferences/FileMaker Pref. Folder, not the general root Preferences folder. It's not a standard text file so you can't edit it or see what's wrong with it. It would be nice if you could... I guess the update to X.1.5 or the networking update changed some features of networking, so when FMPro tried to access the TCP/IP network, it found something which didn't fit any more. …

Here is my problem, hoping to explain with my poor English. I act habitually in hosting on AIX environment: every company approaches its databases on our servers; every company has a certain number of users who approach the same database (i.e. the 20 users of the company A at the same time approach the files of the company A, 15 users of the B company approach the files of the B company, and so on). On a single server I can accommodate several companies. Now we have acquired a solution developed with FM 5.5 (approximately 120 files) for the integrated management of the Quality System; this usually works on networks with FM server. I've been running DB files on FM 5 UL on a G4 server. Some are accessed both via the web (using Webstar/Lasso) and FM clients. I have put aliases of all the currently active DB files in the Startup folder so if I have to do a server restart, they open back automatically. I am migrating the DB files over to a new additional G4 running FM 5.5 Server, and opening them on the original FM UL copy on the old server for web access. I've run across a problem, maybe because I'm not particularly technical, with the new aliases I created. I created them, moved them through my own workstation desktop (because sharing is off on both servers) and they don't work because i…

I'm no network expert, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question -- but: Is there an easy way to launch a FileMaker file on a REMOTE computer (in other words, to have the file actually open on the remote computer, instead of opening on the local computer)? For various reasons, I would like to be able to host FileMaker databases on a FM Server machine (Windows 2000), and use the Task Scheduler on that server to open the hosted databases on a remote machine (which I use as a web server). This is the *worst* way to share FMP databases! It will lead to file corruption, data loss and wasted time: I've been working with people who believed that daily crash-and-restore is normal! It's not. Others will concur. Get a machine and dedicate it to being a FM Host. Get another license of FMP (or better yet FM Server) and open the databases on this host. Turn off file sharing and web serving and all other non-essential stuff. Delete (or zip) all other copies of the databases from the network (yes all of them!). Get a backup system working for the server. Teach people to access the databases by opening them fom the Host, or create a "opener" file to automate the p…

    1) I want to create a three level password system for a peer to peer FileMaker network solution. Does the password level of the person who opens the solution on the file host determine access of guests who access the solution subsequently? i.e. if a level 2 person opens the solution first, can a level 1 user login with greater access? 2) If a level 3 user logs in with access to only 2 of the 6 files in the solution, will the relational data still appear in the accessable files even though the user does not have priveliges to open the parent file? Any insight would be wonderful. ~Dennis

Installed OS 10.1.2 and when I launched the OS 9 native version of FMPro v5.5 instead of it opening it classic, it just crashes. I then installed the OS X native version and all was fine. However, like most intelligent sys admins, after I experimented for exposure, I went back to OS 9. Now when I double-click a FMPro db on my desktop, it produces a bogus error about incorrect installation, missing system components and insufficient memory. If I launch FMPro and do a File:Open, no problems. Obviously the OS X version is causing the OS 9 version to misbehave. Anyone know if this is a known issue or am I special and will have to deal with it accordingly?

In MacOS it seems that you cannot get the value list that is attached to a field formatted as "menu" to display, unless you explicitly click into the field. In does not display if you tab into it, and into doesn't display if you go to the field through a Set Field script step. If you format the field as a list, however, it displays the attached value list. But, in Windows, a field formatted as a menu, shows its value list if you either tab to it, or use the Set Field script step to go to it. Is there anyone who knows why this is so? And could you make the menu value list display perhaps through the use of AppleScript? Thanks for any help, Daniel
