Hi Guys, I'm asking for advice for a fairly simple problem. My FORM screen has about 30 fields which the user can alter at will. The problem is, the altering at will (as the multiusers are changing fields and then not realising it!), is there a way where I can have my FORM screen so that users can "view" data (so the FORM would not allow any data entry), however when they want to edit data, i'd like them to click on an edit button, which will allow entry into fields. At present with FM6, I do this with two layouts, Layout1 is readonly, and Layout2 is not. when you click on the edit button, it takes you to layout2. Is there a more efficient way of doing this wi…

Hi everyone. I have searched high and low for an invoice example without luck. Currently I have an invoice file that consisits of one record per item ordered. It is working wonderfully, but I want to be able to look at a list of all invoices per customer from my customer file. Instead of showing just one reference to an invoice number, it shows a record for each item ordered in the portal. So if customer A bought three things on an invoice, my portal is showing three occurances of that invoice. However, if I create a line items file and an invoice file (relate them and create a Sum(field) in my customer db, it works. This will take a lot of work to ch…

I have a main table and an accounts table. They are related by "account#". I can get totals and sub totals of the fields in the main table but if I place the calculated summary field from the accounts table in the main table it won't display only get a blank field. Ok, I'm having a new problem with printing. I have a small form where Users can enter in text. As they type, the text box will automatically scroll so that they can type as much as their little hearts desire. The problem I'm having comes when I try to print these forms. I'd like the layout to expand the part to fit in all the text so that it will print nicely. I've tried making the fields very large, and setting them to slide. This works most of the time, but some Users seem to type more than I thought possible - is there any setting that let these fields expand to fit the text in preview/print mode? Thanks

I have a credit card field that I would like the first 12 digits to use the bulletz font and the last 4 to use the arial font. Is this possible? I haven't been able to get it to work but wasn't sure if it wasn't possible or if it was the way I was using the TextFont function. This is the 1st time I have used the TextFont function. When I copy and paste information from a web site into a field, the font format from the web site is pasted with the data. This is not what I want. I want the pasted data to take on the font characteristics I have defined for the field under the layout. I tried Synchronize Field Font under Field Behaviors, but that had no effect. I also searched the manual and online help but was unable to find a solution. Thank you in advance. I imagine this is easy and perhaps common answer.

I upgraded to FileMaker Pro 7 from 6 and now some portals aren't showing information in Preview Mode and aren't printing (though I can view the information in Browse Mode), and also there are pages of blank space between the portals. The portals have repeating fields and I think that the database is leaving space for if all the portal's repetitions were needed even when only a few of the repetitions are needed. Selecting Sliding Up didn't help. This all worked fine in all previous versions of FileMaker Pro. Please help!

When I compare text written in Arial in Pro7 with the same text in Pro5 there are big difference in sharpnes. It seems that in Pro7 the text is not so sharp and clear. I cannot see that there are any difference in settings. Has anyone seen the same problem and know how to deal with it so the text will be as sharp as in pro5.

Is there a way w/out using plug-in to disable the Drop-down menu on top of FileMaker? My intention is to disable the menu for users but allow admin/programmers to have "normal" access. The closest plug-in I found is http://www.dacons.net/fmplugins/menucontrol/extfunc/extfunc.html but it cost $89!!!

I have set up a report that groups data just how I want it, but I would really love to be able to edit the data while it is grouped like that. So sorry if this seems to be a trivial question, but I am a newbie with FM. I am trying to create a report/layout that has a list of parts contained within sections. The parts need to be listed in separate sections in the layout, so for example all parts in section 1 would be on pages 1-3, section 2 page 4, section 3 pages 5-6 e.t.c. I can't work out how to put a page break after each section. I've got the following question: When having a database "treatment" with two related tables "materials" and "work", where a treatment consists of used materials per m2 and work to be done per m2. The objective is to present an overview of the materials used and the price per m2 and secondly, a simular overview of the work to be done with a total of time needed per m2. Maybe it's supposed to be this way, but I had hoped this would be fixed by v7. Sliding/Reducing size of part does not seem to work properly in certain parts. I have a report that needs to include items from a couple different tables. As an example, imagine a Company table connected to both a Contacts table and an Orders table; I need to get a list of companies and, within each company, a list of contacts AND a list of orders all on the SAME REPORT. Is there any way to doubleclick a record (field) in table view and go to layout? Obviously I can do it by having the user click a field then click a button that calls the layout, but the user just wants to click or doubleclick on the record and have another Browse layout displayed, without having to also click a button.

Now I run my find script, everything works o.k. and all found records can be seen in the table but why doesn't my logo/header show up when I go to Preview or Browse mode?? Hi, I''m very new to filemaker..I'm trying to adapt one of the 3 tabbed templates by moving some of the Graphics tab elements higher up so I have more room below. I move the graphics on one form...but then of course they need adjusting on the other 2 forms as well. I've tried copying the graphics I like because they are in the right spot...then I move to the next tabbed form...on this one I paste...but my pasted version does not go to the exact same spot. I have a small DB that is used to collect data from the various faculty here for their yearly interviews. I have them report on their various research/publications etc. and then compile the data into reports used by the admin here. The problem is, I have a layout set up to print these reports, and when I go to preview mode (or when I print) my field headings disappear. All of the data is there, but the labels seem to completely vanish (they look fine in layout mode and in browse mode). We have a interesting problems here where a button that switches between form and table view works fine on a local database but as soon as that database is moved to the network, it starts prompting the message "Do you wish to save changes with the layout". We don't want this but cannot figure out how to get rid of it -- it seems to happen on some databases but on other ones. Help please! Scott

Hi. I have my main table which is comprised of scenes. An intermediary table which contains characters and then the third table which has the notes for each character. I would like to create a portal in the Scene Form that shows the character's notes side by side instead of in rows, so the portal table would look like this: Character1 Character2 Character3 Notes Notes Notes This layout is important because the length of the notes varies and is often several lines long and I would like to be able to see the different characters in the scene on the screen at the same time. Sorry for the constant postings - I was just wondering if anyone else ever had problems when sliding with multi-page reports. It appears Filemaker won't slide past page breaks, so on some lesser filled reports only half a page is full and then it will skip to the next page. Ideally I'd love to have the fields slide up to fill the white space, regardless of what page they are on in my layout. Has anyone figured a way around this?

Hi (sorry for my English) It seems to me that the maximus size of the layout isn't changed (upgraded) from FM6 to FM7... it still is only 283x283 cm2 ! If you have to import fields from other app, and the number of fields is, for example, 600, FM7 "only" places about 442 fields in the layout. And it is impossible to tell to FM to automatically position those fields into two rows... Is this correct ? (or I lost to Know something)

I want to create a printable invoice. I think I should probably be using sub-summary parts, but I am having trouble figuring that out. I have an orders table and an invoices table that are related using a unique invoice number. The orders table has the individual line items that go on the invoices and then the invoices table does a lot of the calculations such as totals, tax, etc. I think the layout should be based on the orders table. But what type of section do I put the line item info into, and what section do I put the total calc fields into? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I think I've got the idea of sliding the fields into my head after a lot of trial and error. However, I can't find a way of reducing the body size. Some of the records I've got only have a small amount of information in them whilst others have oodles. Consequently, some of my entries on my report need to be one line deep whilst others need to be half a page. I'd really appreciate some help!

I have a layout that I'd like to use for printing. I have created a sub summary part and put in <<CueEditStatus>> where edit status is one of three preset values that a user selects for each record via radio buttons. I am having trouble getting the summary to function in the way I'd like. What I'd like is for it to display each Value with the amount of time next to it. Time for each record is obviously from another field in the record. I have no trouble getting the time value however it only summarizes one of the selections from the value list. What am I missing?

Some field labels or other text elements will automatically resize when you format them differently. For example, if you cloned field labels and the new word is much shorter than the original, by applying any different formatting, the borders of the label are resized to fit the new word. Other times this doesn't happen and you have to manually resize the borders to tighten them around shorter words. Anybody have any clue why this works with some and not with others?

Hello! Quick question as to whether there is any way to overcome the normal "window close" controls (e.g. on a OS X Mac, the top left red button). I have certain validation scripts that run upon exiting from a field (using a free event plugin), but they can sidestepped by a user who changes a field and then closes the window (without leaving that field). I could script a close window button, but that's of no use if I don't void the normal OS one. Any way to do this without expensive "menu" plug-ins? Thanks for your assistance. Justin.

I'm building a database for my cabinet shop. I have a lot of different types of cabinets and each cabinet has several possible views. I would like to keep all the views per cabinet on one layout. My goal is to navigate the layout via buttons. If you wanted a plan view, hit the plan view button. If you wanted a side section, hit the side section button. Hello, I have 2 problems with filemaker. I have hide the side navagation bar so the mouse wheel will not scroll to the next record, however I would like to scroll the portal. So for example the portal have 50 lines/items and if I use the mouse wheel I can scroll down all the way to the last record in the portal. I am new to the forums, but not to FMPro, though It's been some time since I last touched it. I edit weekly newsletter featuring articles written by others. I compile them and email the doc to a subscription list. Please excuse if this is too simplistic of a question... I've been building a project/task tracking db and I've just now tried to create some reports. Ulitmately, I want to see all my projects and their associated tasks in a printable report. I've just started trying out filemaker 7, (I'm converting from Access). I've managed to use the Product Catalog Template and modify it to my needs so it looks and acts like my access database except for one thing. I'm tring to implicated a fairly difficult sorting solution. Heres what it is: Each Record has one assigned keyword and a price value. I am working on a layout that has a text box (edit box) that starts at the bottom of the first page and continues to the second page because it holds a large amount of text. Whenever I print from this layout, the first page prints fine, but at the top of the second page, the first 10 or so lines are the last lines on the first page. Some of the text is being printed out on the first and second pages. I have "Allow part to break across page boundaries" enabled. Does anyone know a solution to prevent the duplication of text on the two printed pages? I have a layout of patients with 2 portals. The first displays all of a patients medication allergies. The second portal displays a patients medications. The second portal has an active field and sorts so that all the active medications are on top. It does display nonactive medications below that to see what may have changed recently. I know it is difficult to print from portals, therefore I would like to make a layout that for a given patient prints there name as the header, followed by their medication allergies and then their active medications.( I would need to limit the medications to where the active box is checked). I have a number of layouts with subsummary and trailing grand summary parts. Each layout has the sort field and a summary field in the subsummary part, then the summary field again in the trailing grand summary part. When the records are sorted by the sort field for the subsummary part, everything displays fine and correct. However when a reorder is added to the sort so that the records are reordered to be decreasing by the summary field, the summary field content goes blank in the subsummary part. It still displays correctly in the trailing grand summary part. It doesn't matter which summary field I put on the layout, the one that is included in the reorder goes bla…

Merge fields inherit font formats. Can they inherit changes in the paragraph formats, specifically tab settings? Our intention is to print complex (and changing) text-intensive layouts by concatenating a record's text fields into a single merge field. But we can't do this if tab settings specific to that record won't transfer. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am using FileMaker Dev 7.03 on Windows 2000 SP4 using a Matrox P650 graphics card. When in Layout mode every object I click on the doted outline line is offset by 6 x 3 pixells which makes it very difficult to possion objects. Is there a bug or am I doing some thing wrong?

Filemaker 5.0 I designed a program at 800x600 resolution and when I installed it the user screen is 1024x768 so it only displays on 1/2 of the screen How do you ensure a window is open to its largest capable size? This meaning the window must fill the user's screen, therefore a 800X600 user will have his window sized to 800x600 and a 1024x768 user will have his window sized to 1024x768. I guess the real question is that this window needs to be maximized as if the user clicked on the maximize button on the title bar and the proportions are right.

Hi, I try to copy Icon from Applications, files or folder (using apple-info) and then paste thoses icon in my layout to use it as a Button-icon. But, every time the graphic look crapy, especially when the icon have a bit of a soft edge or shadow. You can try what i mean with the Quicktime icon from OS X . . . I have a layout in list veiw. There is a footer with all the buttons to set up the printer and print. The print script brings the layout into preview mode and prints. The problem I'm running into is the computer continues to print the footer as well. I know how to tell fields not to print, but how do you tell the footer and everything in it not to print. Does anyone know how to lighten up the highlight color so that I can still see my text when it is highlighted? I've looked all over here and also on usenet in some of the Windows groups. In Word and Outlook, etc. when the text is highlighted it changes color to a contrast so you can still see it. Not so with FileMaker. On my Mac at home I can have the highlight color be anything I choose.....I can't find anything like that on the Windows machine here at work....What to do? Thanks. Deborah

Fellow developers, occasionally I stumble across layout limitations, for example things that work in one layout part but not in others. Example: up to FP6, global fields placed in the header part could only be edited in Form view (since FP7 it also works in List and Table views). Other Example: In FP7 IWP I was not at all able to edit fields placed in the header part. I do not look for a solution to the latter problem, but I'm looking for a comprehensive list of "Dos" and Donts" for layouts. The FM docs I know about don't say a thing about this. I have a simple letter layout with a text box arranged with: <<current date>> . However, today, the date displayed is "January 22, 2005" -- my Mac is setup to a server so the date and time are correct. Its probably simple but need to know how to make it read "today's date" -- which in this case, today, is February 11, 2005.

When viewing the records in list view, a 'current record bar' appears at the side of the record that is current. This moves along side each record as you move up and down. Is there a way to enhance this record bar, so that it acts like a highlighter across the page, from left to right. So as you move from record to record, it is (more) obvious to the user what record is current. Cheers

I have so far been able to relate tables and have them work normally. I related a new table for medication lists by patient id and name. I can not get the patient id and last name to show up from related records. It just says 0 records. I have posted my database files. The main problem is on layout patients. Any help appreciated. Hello, all. My boss wants to be able to enter "canned" text into a text field to save folks from having to type the same phrases over and over. My idea was to have a value list field containing all the canned phrases people typically enter next to a button. The user selects the canned phrase from the value list, clicks the button and the selected phrase is placed into the text field above right where the cursor is. I know the 'insert text' script step, but I can't figure out how to get it to insert text at the cursor. Ideas? Thanks.

When I switch to a table view the Field Names all show up as a row across the top of the page. Is there a way to make them display vertically in column on the left instead? Microsoft Excel has a feature called TRANSPOSE where you can take a row of field values (A1-A2-A3) and convert them to a column (A1-B1-C1). I'm trying to generate a report that has a list of tasks in a column on the left and a spreadsheet like matrix that contains values on the right. Is this feasible in filemaker? Thanks, Jarvis

Well, I have a layout that displays something, when I change to preview mode, or when I print the layout, it displays a totally different layout... I can't find the field that are printed on the layout mode of that layout?? I hope you understand what I mean, thank you in advance.

is there a way to make a font blink in filemaker? or a trick to make it seem to? I have a check. If field A is empty then field B says "Open". I also have a check that if the record is over a week old and field A is empty, field B says "Open" in red. I'd rather something far more annoying. like blinking. Is this possible? Thanks

Whenever I get emails from my mac in Entourage, I copy some of that info and paste into Filemaker. I have Filemaker set to be ay 9point Helvetica, but when you paste into any field, the formatting is lost and it stays at the formatting that it was from the email. Is there anyway to force the formatting in FM, so that it is always Helvetica 9 point? thanks.

Hey, I have a database on people that are a member of our club. When people leave the club they get a mark 'inactive'. I don't want to delete those records from the database, but just never see them on any lay-out. How do I do this? I know I can search and leave away those records, but this is a bit frustrating for all people looking in the database and doing their searches and having the 'inactives' come up in their searches as they are included in their home made searches. tia, Michel

I am a bit in trouble in solving this. I have three type of invoice layouts- one for international ,one for US Customers, onve for multiple stores (multiple packing slips and single invoice); and one for international customer I currently have all layouts in Exel. Invoice 1: (US Customer)-just a regular commrecial invoice Invoice 2: (Multiple stores)- 1 single invoice with multiple stores/ and different quantities of product for each of them Invoice 3: (Overseas)- Almost same info like "Invoice 1" but has additional fields. I have noticed that users are able to change fonts when they enter text into a text field in FileMaker. In layout, I specify a specific font and font size. But users can go into browse mode, go to Format-Font and Format-Size and they can change the font and size for each text field. I have several users doing this, which results in each record's text fields being of different fonts and sizes. Is there any way to prohibit users from setting a different font and size while they are in browse mode?

Hi, As you may guess, I'm fairly new to Filemaker but I love it! Anyhow, I have a small company which currently uses 5.5 - I am (with a little help) rewriting our workflow system. I have some nice layouts but we have some PC's running different screen resolutions to others. Most run 1024 x 768 and the layouts have been designed to fit nicely. My laptop however runs 1400 x 1050 and the layout is too small. If I zoom to 150%, it's just a tad too big but acceptable. What I would like to do is perform a 'calculated zoom' if at all possible, where the layout will zoom dependant on screen resolution. Gang- I'm creating a telephone directory and I need to duplicate the behavior found in many dictionaries or encyclopedias: I need to show in the header the first surname on the page and the last surname on the page. They must both be in the header and appear in the format "surnamefirst - surnamelast" where surnamefirst is the last name of the FIRST record on that page and surnamelast is the last name of the LAST record on that page. I'm at a loss as to how to do this. If I just put the surname field in the header, it correctly displays the first surname from that page, but what must I do to somehow grab the last surname from a given page?

Hello, I am hoping this is simple but I have not been able to find it. I I want to format my field so that when the user pastes text in to the field the field formatting overrides the text formatting. Are there any cautions or common mistakes in creating summary reports with data drawn from more than one table? I'm trying to pull data from two related tables, but am getting invalid totals as well as display oddities (blank lines and multiple total lines in GrandSmry part where there shoud only be one). I have 4 tables in my database. Of those, several are used in a relationship in each table for multiple lookups. (For example: Client_Code, Client_Name, Client_Type, Client_Cost are in two or more tables with different types of data). HI, I am using filemaker pro 6 and what i am working with is a database of ppl who i want to mail letters to, everyone has different sorts of addresses some are long or short. Some ppl have one line in there address & others require more space, what i want is to get rid of all the blank spaces so when i print out the letters there arent all these huge gaps, i really need a step by step here, because i tried the sliding objects and i cant seem to get it to reduce the blank spaces so its more compact, can anyone help me? i would be so greatful....Thanks!!!!

I used to use Filemaker Pro at a previous workplace on OS X and now I have moved to another location which is Windows based but would like to use all of my old templates. I have a database of patients. The table patients is linked in a one to many relationship to medications (each patient may be on many medications). I created a portal in my patient layout to enter/view/edit medications. (ie keep an accurate medication list). Next to each medication is a checkbox field for active so old and inactive medications can be sorted to the bottom. All I want to do is to print a patients active medication list. I have just bought the program, and want to use it for my little business of selling t-shirts & accessories at local fairs here in California. I want to cut down on the amount of layouts I have for various faxes, memos etc. I'm thinking of creating some type of dynamic layout that I can use for all of them (presently we have around 50 layouts). User's would enter information into fields, click a button that would then run a script that would put all of these fields into a calculated field that displays the document. I have a database consisting of many records and layouts. One of my layouts that I use for printing has a subsummary part. Each Record in the database has a number ie; 1m1, 1m3, 2m1, 2m2. When I go to this layout for printing which has the subsummary part it puts a heading over the records in that series. ie; Group 1: followed by records 1m1, 1m2; Group 2: followed by records 2m1,2m2. The group number is derived from the first number of the record. What I'd like to do is add another piece of data to that sub summary. Hi I am trying to add a small graphic to a Container field. I set the graphic format to "Reduce or Enlarge" or "Enlarge" And the "Maintain origianl...." is not checked. But the graphic do not expand to the total field it leaves a white edge to the right and at the buttom (it looks like it make some kind of blur to the color). I have have used a color made inside FM and a graphic made in PhotoShop - the result is the same. Can anyone help me so the graphic fill the field total with not white edge. Jens Peter

I am creating a new application to print the obstetrician's delivery note, the labor and delivery nurse's delivery note, and a new report for the delivery log at the time each note is printed. I want the delivery log to be in landscape mode on legal paper, with each patient's record stretching across two facing pages, with the holes punched in the right margin of the left facing page and in the left margin of the right facing page. I have a fairly small database. Basically there is a Project table and a related Shots table. There is never more than a single project record and, during testing, I had no more than ten or so shot records. But when the number of shot records gets higher (at this point it is still just 64 records) the graphic refresh of some of my layouts slows right down. This does not happen when the file is shared via FileMaker Server, only when opened directly. I am using a pretty fast PC as my workstation (2.8 GHz, 16 MB AGP video) and I get the same speed issues when I run it directly from my desktop, so network issues aren't the problem. I have been so far very successful in creating my database but I am having trouble in displaying a summary of my data in a report and would appreciate help. I have a database of patients each of whom have many visits by a physician. Patient A is seen on 1/1/05 by Dr Y, 1/2/05 by Dr Z, 1/3/05 by Dr X.
