Wonder if any one could point me in the right direction, I have one database with only one layout where I enter infomation on different customers. I want to enable instant web publishing so my customers could view their data only. The best way (I think) is to have them login and then run a script which basically finds data under their name but I can't seem to put this into practice! I have searched the forums and most seem to choose Status(Currentuser) etc... but I don't know how to progress further. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Roy

Okay, here's what I want to do: I have a FMP Server running a TON of databases, some are related, most are not. I want to create a login database (edulogin) with two fields: login and password. Then, a second database (edupermissions) with fields: login, database, and permission. edupermissions will relate to edulogin using the field "login". Therefore, for each database that a user has access to, there will be a record in the edupermissions database, including a level of security located in the "permission" field. (everybody got this so far?) Basically, edulogin will be related to edupermissions with a "one to many" relationship, using "login" as the relations…

I have created a database with 5 other related files. The main database grabs the needed information from the other files. My problem is that when I run the main database and related files with the master password I have no problems, when I add the user passwords to the main and related files the main database will not work when I log in with a user password. When I click in a box that should show a pop up menu I get "undefined value". I set up all the files the same and I still get this problem. What am I doing wrong?

I am working with an organization that is going to put one FM client outside the firewall to talk to their ISPs database. The ISPs database will periodically query the FM client new records to upload. I have given them a password with browse and export privileges. The problem I see is that in general, the organization has been very lax about passwords. I am thinking it could be possible for someone sniffing around to find the IP address and that there is an ODBC database there. By trying common passwords, they might take over the database. Is this a realistic possiblity? Should we I get everyone to change their passwords, or can I set-up the client to talk to only o…

Hello everyone Do I expose myself to some apparent risk that I don't know of, when publishing my database on the web? I have included the possibility to add/edit/delet data via the web too. How is my database setup then? I have two logins, one "No password" and one "Add". "No password" requires, guess what, no password but is restricted to a minimum of rights, Browse and Export. Add, on the other hand may do anything possible in a FmPro41-database. I have two identical layouts, named "Layout1" and "Add", "No password" is allowed to see "Layout1" in read-only-mode, but isn't allowed to change to the Add-layout. "Add" again may do anything. When searching the database I…

I am working on a password id system but I am confused about how to pass the password from one db to the other db. Example follows: User db has userids and passwords, Contents db has all the information. I am using the builtin groups and passwords features for the Contents db. The admin would be responsible for assigning the user to the approiate group in the User db. The password is stored in a global field in the User db. Can I send the password from the User db to the Contents db? if so, how? what script function would I use? I am using Filemaker Pro 5.5.

Hello: I have a runtime database that is view only. It will be written to CD-ROM. My concern is that users who have FM Pro on their machine can open up a .USR file, show all records and export these records to create their own direct mailing or whatever. Is there any way to prevent a user from opening runtime files directly in FM Pro? Any comments would be most helpful. Thanks!

Here is a similar problem that after many years I have not been able to solve satisfactory: How can I in the SAME data base (Filemaker 3.0) lock records that are completed, and checked as being correct and at the same time give acces over a network to change, correct, and complete other recently made records and at the same time consult all the records previously made. PS: I am afraid of mistakes during importing/exporting records and I am also scared overwriting a backup with a bad copy. You could try an Activity File. When the user attempts any activity you create an activity record which logs the date, time, terminal, and what I call an "activity string". By using a univeral Global field(s) in which you can set "activity description" you can report back to that field on every meaningful activity a specific text string which is written to the activity record when the user has completed the specific task. I haven't used this with multi-tasking terminals, but the concept should be relative. Been real busy for a long time...Good to be back!

I am looking for a way to control more tightly which layouts and files certain users can access. We already have Group-level access set out for various databases. Our users also have different log-in sites within those groups. I have created a 4-level access system (1 being all access, 2 being all access except developer stuff, 3 for log-in site only, and 4 for their own info only within their log-in site). I have placed fields in an Auth Users file and are check-boxes on the user info screen. We are currently using a global field in our main login database to record the login access information (related to the Auth Users). Then a script is used to set their access-l…

Hello - I'm building a donor database for a small foundation, and I'm wondering whether I should use FM's standard password/permission protection or build a custom one. The situation: The database will contain sensitive information (don't they all?), such as credit card numbers. It is generally only accessed by three people: the donations coordinator, her assistant, and her superior. For these three folks all that's needed are two passwords - one with complete access and one with slightly more restriced access. However, once a year the foundation brings in volunteers to answer phones and enter donations in the database. I want to script this process to control it (check…

Hi All, We just upgraded to FM5 and we're running it on a network of 5 users(TCP/IP). Perhaps we never noticed it before but if I open one particular file before the other users none of them can access the file. They all get an error message that says "HR Databse is currently in use and could not be opened. The file is single-user or the host could not be found on the network." If any other user opens the file first everyone (including myself) can access the file without a problem. Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Thanks for your help. Joe T.

Hello, I would like to add security to my runtime application which will be sold to many (I hope) users. I see too many holes in the password system I've set up. Someone suggested Crypto Toolbox Plugin which can get the users machine ID and encrypt it for a password. Does anyone have enough experience with it to walk me through it some? I have downloaded it and installed it; viewed and ran the test files. There isn't much documentation and I could use a push start here. MO & TIA, Bill

I'm building a school volunteer database that I want to web enable. It's accessible to everyone. Web Companion enables setting up a FMPro 5 database for "entry only". This is very easy and works great with newer browsers which support CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). A user is directed to enter data into a web-enabled form, a new record is automatically generated. When the submit button is pressed, the results are sent to the database, and the results of that record are displayed in a form for review by the user. ONLY the entered form for that user has submitted is viewable. However, when an older browser is detected, the Web Companion automatically delivers a new record…

I am helping to move a FM DB that was created with 3.0 from a MAC to PC Version. When DB was created back in '96 the creator put a "master" PW into play. This was never documented and nobody remembers what it is... Question is... does anybody know a way around the pw or am I just totally @#$#$%! This db is one of the better ones I have seen, getting at the data is easy enough, but I would hate to lose all the forms and "switchboards" If there is anybody out there with a solution or workaround... please help, Thanks [email protected]

I currently have approx 120ish files shared on FM Server 5. Every time I wish to change a password I have to open every file and edit the user group and password manually. This, as I am sure you can imagine is a huge pain in the bum, is there a script that will allow me to enter a password and a users access and will transfer this to every file on the server. Also is there any information on setting up User Names and setting up profiles for a specific User Name. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sean

I hate to be the barrer of bad news. But what you ask is not possible. One thing you might consider is that if the users are createing reports not data entry screens, you might export your data to an unsecured database where the user can have unrestricted access to the layouts fields and scripts.

Are you aware of whether it is possible for users at remote sites to be working on a local copy of the database? The critical matter is that this local copy is connected to a remote master which checks each remote site every 30 seconds and replicates any changes to the other sites. I wonder whether anyone has been able to achieve this, and whether it helps performance of Filemaker within a remote site. I want to do so, as our remote sites are connected only by modem and I would like to have the data as up-to-date and integrated.

We've had some problems with a possible security breach. We have a couple of databases running through Filemaker Server 5 (all users use FM 5) and when you want to connect to one of them, you have to enter your password into the password field (standard pop up window). But yesterday when we were updating the database, all except one of the users showed up during the "I-have-to-shut-you-down-'cause-I-want-sole-command-over-database" process. And after we added the fields we wanted, the one user who didn't show up in the list lost all the records she had entered... Any idea why this happened? And is this possible at all??? This could be a real security issue.

I have a set of 27 files which my organisation uses daily. It would appear that if someone leaves their desk for a period of time (hours?), files are closed (somehow). When the person returns to resume work, the closed files are re-opened (because they are used in a portal) automatically with the default password, which does not have the correct access permissions to allow modifications. This is a real nuisance to people, since they have to quit and reopen the files with the correct password. This takes a minute or two over the network, and they don't like the wait. I've stressed to people that they should never close a window by clicking on the close box, but use "Hide …

I have made a solution that uses a hardware key for protection against piracy. This configuration effectively protects the software of unautorized use, but prevents me from distribution (sales) of my solutions in other countries/cities because although the installation of the hardware key is relatively easy it couldn't be made but all the customers. So I would like to hear about other ways to protect my products. Saludos!

Hello, I'm a new user in Filemaker publishing, and I have to publish a database in several places. The users should be able to see only the records they are concerned with, and one superuser should be able to see all the records. I really don't know how to do it.

We have an inhouse network running FMpro on Win and Mac systems, and instead of having each user type in his or her password when opening a file, it would be much easier to just have the host use the login username directly as the password. It would eliminate all visible password processing, and users could just open files normally without worrying about it. I've been wandering through the manuals and help files for some time and haven't found a way to do it yet... Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mostly my problem is, I don't know what I'm doing. I have created a form that will be used by a few different users over a LAN. In this form I need to create a script that will enable a user to enter their digital signature into a particular field. I have a 25-30 file solution to be used on a LAN with 4 levels of securiy allowing (or not) wiewing only, editing, new entry, etc. I see two options for security. One uses the available password/groups function incorporated in FMP5 and the other sets up a password file with each staffer given a security level. After logging ina relationship would linc the security level to the name in each file. A script before each navigation or function script would compare the secruty level in the Related ile for the user and the one I define for the function an Halot or allow the function to go on. Any opinions on which is better? Any other options for restricting functions?

We have about 15 users who need varying levels of access to a file with confidential info. We want to be able to identify who made the most recent edit to a record in case there's a problem with the data. Because our users often share workstations and use different computers at different times, we can't use the auto-enter Modification Name feature because the Current User Name won't necessarily reflect who's actually editing the record. Since there are relatively few users, we're planning to set up individual passwords for each person with the idea that each individual's group and/or password will accurately identify the user. I'm developing a Kiosk solution (FM5 and Win98) that has 4 FM5 databases as part of the solution. How does one protect the files so that they can't be opened and examined by a copy of Filemaker that happens to be on a user's machine? I want the files to only be openable by my main file under script control (or by one of my other datafiles also under script control). If I password protect each file, how can I then open them automatically under my control without user intervention? Thanks for any suggestions. Steve

John, I have just read your comment in "Importing and Exporting" about a problem with FM5, paswords and importing. What are the problems? Chris ------------------

I've just started with the Web Security databases for a FMP server that's web-sharing some databases with Web Companion. FMP 4.0v3 and WC 4.0v3 on a MacOS 9.0.4 G4 computer. I've worked out some things, and I am successfully adding new databases and users to the Seb Security databases through the FMP client, but I cannot get the thing happening through a web browser. I've configured WC to allow remote admin with a password. When I connect in through the web browser (into the "Web Companion Security Administration" page with just the "datbase name" field and OK buttons) I cannot get any further. Authorisation fails, even before it asks for a password. Also, I'm not sure…

I'm not sure the best way to ask this question so I am going to give an example. I have about 50 users that belong to about 5 groups. I do field by field access by testing for the client's username in CDML. Is there any way I could add a field to the web security database that contains what group they belong to and test for that instead of thier user name? This would save me a ton of time setting up the in code security. Thanks in advance. Chris

I am currently using Status(CurrentUserName) to automatically install the correct user details on emails and letters. The problem with this is that it is specific to each computer i.e. the user has to always use the same computer, and it can be changed through edit -> preferences. Is there is a way of linking this to a password instead ------------------

I am developing a multifile solution that needs to have several layers of password protection. I want to give the IT administrator the option of chanaging passwords for the user's but without allowing the IT administrator the opportunity of opening up my solution. Is this possible? Second is it possible to rename the "user name" via a script or other device? At present I created a file "passwords" with records containing user names and userdefined passowrds. The User name is a match field for a relationship that populates a hidden field with the correct password in another file. The user would enter the user name in a corresponding matchfield for the relationship vi…

is it logical to allow one of our clients to hosts (from their job site) a few DB's for viewing and submitting over the web? What are the downfalls of restricting access from the host computer to Editing only? We really don't want these guys getting in there and messing around just to try and see what filemaker is all about, but they insist that they host it from there. What are some possibilities? We definitely don't want them to be able to access layout mode, scriptmaker or define fields, and most importantly ACCESS!! (So basically editiing only). What to do what to do? Jeremy

We have restricted users from editing records once they have created them. Is they a way to allow editing access to a particular layout (or field) without compromising the above mentioned security. example- an invoice file has restricted editing access to all records after the original creation. We would like to allow a particular user to edit one field (which can be placed on any layout) at any time... however we don't want that user to have further access. thanks in advance.

I've run into a situation where I have set access restrictions for a low end user level to only a particular part of the solution. The solution is set up so these low end users can normally only see there own records. However, it is possible for the user to enter find mode and perform a query in a field that I have to give them access to. (I can't cover it up with an invisable box as they are required to enter data in it.) They are then able to see other users records. Am I missing something in FM's security setup that would prevent the Find Mode from being available? Is a plug-in my only option? re: FMSecure or other?

I am using Filemaker 5 and web companion to publish my data on the web. My problem is this: I need different levels of access to my database: some users should browse only, while others should be able to edit, add and delete data. But whenever I operate with a "no password" as well as other passwords, users never get the dialogue box to type in the passwords that will give them a higher level of accessibility. The "no password" seems to dominate. Does anyone know how to solve this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Ida

I'm trying to set up a web based password system for a client using FileMaker Pro. I already have the passwords and ID generated. What I need to know now is how I get it to look at the database, spawn a matching ID and password set to the screen and then remove it from the database. The passwords and ID are already hardcoded into the users area in the server settings under WebStar. I've got the database to hand off variables to the secure e-commerce system of the client (Hosted on another system), once the credit card is validated then it comes back the original server and what I'd like to have happen is that the user then gets the unique ID and pas…

Why is it that you can set up user groups with different access and it even give you the option to make a specific field view only, but then it denies access to the entire layout? I am trying to set up three groups to view the same layout, but one group should not be able to view one of the fields. Now, I can set it up so that I create a different layout for them to view, but how can I set it up so that by using a specific password, it will go right to the correct layout? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have four files related to each other. i have made a password for the first file. When I make the password for the second file and make it for editing only, the second file won't open and it says access denied! I thought editing only would let me get in the file. It doesn't. I must be doing something wrong. Help!! Also, can I make one password for each file and open them allwith some type of script? Help!! thanks, Barry

I managed to lose my little book of passwords before I was able to transfer my admin password from my last client to my home list. I know their passwords, as I gave them a copy of my list, but I kept my own admin password from them for copyright reasons. Trouble is that I lost the password that I need to modify the latest version of the DB and I can't get in, which means working from a much older version and replacing all of the elements from the past year. After you have all had a good chuckle at my expence, could someone tell me how I might be able to extract or disable the MASTER password so I can get into the recent version without having to replicate all that work. …

I am currently using FMP 5 to track projects and so on for our department. Recently, I added a file called weekly reports for developers and team managers to submit their weekly reports. I'm also in the process of putting the final touches on the web version of this. What I need to do is limit browsing capabilities of individual users. We want people to submit their reports through this either through the FMP client on their desktops or through a web browser, but don't want them to see other's reports. I'd appreciate any insight...

I've come across a post or two here and there dealing with similar problems to mine, but haven't seen a response to them. My problem is this: I'm using FMP 5.0 and Claris HomePage 3.0 I've set up the Web Security database to restrict certain functions. When I submit an action, like -find or -new, the login pop-up box displays and I enter my username and password. The problem lies in that when I click OK to submit the info, I get the message Error #4. After seeing this I clicked the back button in the browser and resubmitted the information and it worked fine. Could someone tell me why Filemaker tells me the command is unknown, then proceeds to let me do whatever…

This is kind of a newbie question, but... I have a need to set some security up to lock out some users of a specific layout in a dbase. I set up the passwords and the groups, follow the instructions about allowing access to the layout per the passwords, but with the "general" pswrd, I get locked out of the entire db, not just the specific layout. My "secure" pswrd works fine. What gives? This is in FMPro 5 Servr on a Mac

How can I password protect each individual record. My BBS front end would transmit a username and password. This would create a new record. The user would then fill out the rest of the DB fields. All other users in the DB could view this record but not edit it. The only person that could edit it would be the maker. How do I do this
