FM Server 5.5v4 20,000+ record database. 20 networked users. Recent upgrades to eMacs (G4) from iMac (G3). Everything that used to print in OS 9 does ok Except monthly billing statements. But, they print from some computers at some locations. All locations (5) have identical GCC Elite 12 printers with latest ROM upgrades, latest drivers, etc. One office switched to an HP laser and the statements printed fine. The printer resets when the print command is issued (scripted, no user interface)--literally, watch the LCD status go from "receivng data" to blank, to "initializing" and out comes the startup page. I am a fairly new to FileMaker, using FM7 on a Mac running OSX (Jaguar). I have selected to print "records being browsed" under the FileMaker options, but only the first page of the layouts print. I am an experienced FMP developer (non web based solutions only) but a bit stumped by a recent problem. When I save printing preferences using the 'Page Setup' script step in FMP6 on Mac OS X it used to remember settings in the Layout section (like print n-up and border printing prefs). Recently (I think with a Mac OS 10.3.x update, not sure when) it no longer remembers the border settings. So even though I print how I want it printing and then go to the script and save the new settings, next time I print the ******* border has returned. This never used to happen. It needs to be simple to use, So I have added a button onto the form for printing, however I would like to make it so that when the button in clicked the record prints without displaying the button, which is currently in the header. Hi I have several layouts on a DB that are longer than one page in the layout, until things slide up because all repeating fields are not used. Odd thing is the field headings that start out below the page break line don't print, even when they slide up into a single page space. The text in the feilds just below them print, but not the headings. I have tried moving them, changing them, everything I can think of. The "don't print selected objects" checkbox is not checked. I even draged one of the upper headings, that was printing, down into the no print zone, and it stopped printing. Any help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks Kyle

I've been experiencing the following problem when printing out a 10 page form in FMP 6. The form contains a logo (in this case a .jpeg) file in the header. IF the form is 6 pages or under there is no issue, however if the form is more than 6 pages, pages 7 thru 10 only print part of the header and none of the body. Further, if I change the print quality to a lower quality it works fint. Only problem is that the forms look crapy. This dosent seem to be a printer or computer issue, the problem exists in all the envrionments (Windows) that I've dealt with. Anyone ever run into this type of problem? Thanks, Ron

Hi, Presently Im using FileMaker Pro 6 on both Mac and PC, and I have a number of print scripts within my database. At the moment when I hit the print button, it seems to print out the script and not the layout I want. I have to go to the FileMaker option in each print dialog box and choose either records being browsed or current record. Hello, I have a some users that access my FM server via the web. The webpage is written in CDML. When they click on the print button it prints out my print layout that I setup but the print out is big and bold. My layout is configured small with 9 point text and the print out prints on more than half the page. The print out should be only half a page on a 8x11 piece of paper. We WERE using Win98 and FM Pro 5.5 for mail merging data then sending the merged A4 forms in 9 batches to 9 network IP Kyocera Mita printers from FM Pro application all at the same time. This worked but was a litttle slow. We have recently upgraded to XP Pro and FM Pro 6 to print to the same number of printers with the same amount of records. BUT we get to the point of sending a batch of merged record A4 forms to the fourth Printer and Filemaker bombs out stops printing and has to be restarted again. The new PC has plenty of memory and HDD space. We have boosted the Page File and the application memory to the max 32767 and still it will not print t…

I hope this is in the right topic. I have a graphic in a layout that doesn't print the same from PC's (running Windows XP Home) as it does from Mac's (running OSX). The Mac printout is much smoother than the PC one, as if it's changed the resolution. However botht he Mac and PC use the same layout in the same database and the printer dot pitch is the same as far as i can tell. The PC is using an HP LaserJet 4M Plus printer and I tried installing a PostScript driver for it but it didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have three reports that are set to print in sequence. The first script does a find and a sort followed by a page setup and a print command - it then calls the second script, which resorts the data, does another print and calls the third script, which resorts the data, does a final print. All three reports are perfect on the screen, but when I inserted the print steps something strange happened. Until recently we were mostly Macs, but we are migrating to serveral users to Windows 2000. In an attempt to print two different reports, one in portrait and the other in landscape, which ever print job I run first, that is what is used for the next print job regardless if it is in the other print format. For some reason, my multi-page layout, which shows and is functional in Browse mode, does not show right in Print or Preview. Meaning, when I switch to Preview, only page 1 of all 6 pages shows. All of the pages from 2-6 are a single text field, but from what i gather, that should be no problem. Also, the Body extends all of the way from Header to end of Document. I have a requirement to ouput an experience log. The log sheets must have a running total of experience hours in the table. No problem getting that one. But the #$!#$@ thing also has to have a sum of all experience hours on each page. An individual's experience items can run to 20 or more pages. Does anybody have any ideas about how this can be accomplished? It's a throwback to manual records days, and the state checks these by hand using the page totals to compare with the grand total. I can't print in landscape mode to my Epson C82 printer. It gets truncated and reverts to portrait mode. I used to be able to overcome this by selecting "any Printer" instead of "C82..." but that doesn't work anymore. It happens when I try to print envelopes OR reports, the information is truncated so the envelope is worthless and the reports only have partial data. I've seen other complaints of this on the web and people respond by saying they've never heard of this before.... well I have and it's true. Hi. In one of my layouts I have a merged field (which doesn't seem to expand with the cell's contents--I thought they were supposed to?) that slides. It looks really nice in preview mode. My customer has heaps of FMP files and zillions of layouts. Most of these layouts use Helvetica. A year or two back, we found that Helvetica had disappeared from the server and every other machine. Recently, I found it had disappeared off my own machine. Anyone any idea where it might have come from in the first place? It had to be installed with something. I just got a call from a user of my runtime solution that has me stumped. Other users are not having this problem. When the user tries to print an order using the print script, only the footer is printed. There is a header, body and footer in this layout. The program was just loaded today. Created a one page report from a databese. Previw within FMP (6.0v4) shows report ok. when printing the report only the heading shows. When doing a preview from the print dialog (PDF) only the heading shows. This started when updated to 10.3.3. Reports from other databases print ok. We're running FileMaker 6 connected to FileMaker 5.5 Server, running on Windows 2000 Server. Recently, we added some new Dell computers running Windows XP. The problem is that the new computers aren't showing all of the available network printers. We have two servers. The old one is a Windows NT server running Novell server software. All of those printers are showing in the print dialogue box. Any shared printer on the Windows 2000 server are not showing up in the print dialogue box in FileMaker, but they are in other programs. I thought I was being really clever. I made a file called Printer.fp5 that has nothing in it except a bunch of page setup scripts. The idea was that the client could go into the file, do the appropriate page setups for his printer, and set the scripts to use those setups. My report script in the main file calls the appropriate sub-script PortraitSetup or LandscapeSetup in the Printer.fp5 file depending on the current report requirements, and then the main script prints. In theory, any design changes that I might make to the main files and ship out to him would not affect his printing, because his copy of the Printer.fp5 file would not be replaced. In working with an existing pilot logbook I've made some changes in order to do a printed report that will match the layout of my existing paper logbook. At some point in all this the printed output has decided it is going to print the scripts instead of the desired output, yet using the preview option works. (Not preview from OS X/Print Center) What did I trip on to do this, and how can I get it back to normal? I am trying to make a double sided identification card with information in the database. The front side would have a persons name, the rear their photo and personal data. Each side prints on it's own with no problem. My problem is that I want to duplex the card (I have a printer with duplexing capability), but the data doesn't line up on the second page. I am using an Avery business card for the layout. When I print, record #1 is always in the upper left corner. On the back side, record #1 needs to be in the upper right corner. Any suggestions on how to set this up would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a weird problem in FileMaker 5.5 on MacOS 9.2. I've got a database that is used to create a Directory with an index, etc. The on-screen preview looks fine, but when I print it (even from Preview Mode) sometimes a record at the bottom of a page gets shifted to the next one. This of course cause problems since the Index and Table of Contents are both calculated using Preview mode, but what comes out of the printer is different. Comparing the printed text with the Preview version (printed via a screen shot) seems to show that the printed text has a line spacing that is SLIGHTLY bigger than in Preview Mode - the combined increase of course making not eno…

I have a lesson plan form I created and there is a text field for the description of the lesson. I used 9 pt font so the user can put a lot of info in there and scroll bars to view the data on the computer. Howeverwhen it comes time to print the lesson, if any data is not actually visable in the field it won't print. I tried shifting up but either I am doing something wrong or it wasn't meant for that use. I read something about holding the Shift key down when going into Layout mode which will include more options in the Layout menu but I can't makeanything out of it... Does anyone have any experience with the old trick of copying a page in preview mode, pasting it into a page-sized container and printing it? I've used this technique before, cross-platform, but now it's not working properly in Windows XP and 98 with FMP 6. What happens is it turns the page into a lo-res bitmap instead of using the PICT vector data like it does on the Mac. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated! I have muliple printers. I've set up two identical print scripts, one for each printer. I'll print the record to the printer i want it to go to, and "replace" the printing settings in the script for that particular script. Unfortunatly, it changes both scripts. How can i do this? Thanks -ja

I created a form letter that is linked to my database. The letter looks fine on the screen but when I print it for some reason it creates a duplicate of each record. Instead of printing 45 pages I would have to print 90 to get my work. It says that I have 49 records, but in print preview each record has a caopy immediately after the record. What do I do?

I had a script that performed a print layout without dialog but for some unknown reason when I ran the script I got the message "Cannot access print options. Use the Control Panel to set up an active printer." I checked in Control Panel and had a networked printer set as the default and the printer was working. Hello I'm having a speed issue trying to print a merge. I have created a form that will print 2 sided on our Canon Imagerunners - It pulls information from several databases, and includes a portal with up to 15 lines in it. I'm working on a Win2K machine, using FM6.0 - am I exceeding the print levels of Filemaker? I need to print 5,000 records like this - it took 2 hours to RIP 300 records! There are graphics involved - simple Bitmaps, but several of them.

I have to printo onto a complex form with many fields. I have scanned the form and put the fields over the appropriate places, and it prints well on my printer (a simple Epson Stylus 740). Problem is, I need to be able to print the same form on many many many different printers--laser and deskjet, Mac or PC. Hi, I've been checking some posts and not sure if somebody had encountered exact problem i have right now. I am using a Tally line printer over the network. I have successfully used emulation to print in dot matrix font format that i wanted. But when i tried printing actual records i encountered this problem: In preview mode, i have several records shown in List in each page (i'm using 13.2x11 inch tractor feed papers). But in actual printout, not all records will fit in each page (as shown in each page of preview). Worse is, these remaining lines of records that do not fit in each printed page are skipped. Hi We have our database on a server with 10 computers. The old files were shared using appletalk under system 9 and earlier. Now we are on 9.2 on a Mac but the printing has dramatically slowed down since we changed to TCP/IP sharing. Anyone have and solutions to this slow problem ? I am having a problem with printing multiple 5 row portals on a one page report. In browse and preview mode the lines between portal rows show up, but when I go to print, I get a intermittent line which seems to be interupted by the fields themselves. Has anyone seen this scenario before and more importantly, can you offer advice as to how I can get a solid line to print between the records in a portal?

Hey folks, Anyone else ever see this? We have an OS X machine running fm 6.0 (databases on fm server). Occasionally, the print dialog "loses" the Copies & Pages screen. it's just not there in the menu. When hitting cmd-P, you're taken to the Layout screen (that's the PRINTER'S layout screen -- pages per sheet, border, etc). The other screens seem to be there, but not Copies & Pages. Switching to other apps, the print dialog is fine; all is there. Restarting filemaker seems to fix it (at least until next time), but I was wondering if anyone else ever saw/heard of this. I'm placing hi-res Vector EPS files into filemaker and trying to rotate them 180...they show up fine, but will not print. just get blank boxes. The version that don't have rotation are working just fine. I've tried this one 6.0.4 OSX and 5.5 OS 9.2.2, same results. is this just a limitation of the program? can you rotate Vector EPS's and still print them? thanks!

I saw that one of the fixes with the 6.0.4 patch was the ability to print hi res EPS's to postscript printers on OS X (yaay finally!) however, it doesn't seem to be working for me..Printing to a couple different printers (HP 4v and a new Okidata Color Laser 9300). Both are Postscript. Even saving a postscript file and distilling it results in a low res EPS's. is there some special trick? I've tried storing a copy of the file and not storing a copy. any help would be appreciated! thanks cory

I am printing a long text field that has 'printing/sliding' switched on. This allows me to enter and print out some records that are one page long and others that are several. When I print the pages out the text of the last line gets cut off, half of the characters appear on page one and the other half on page two. Is there a way of forcing a taxt wrap from one page to the next as the same text would appear in a word processing programme? Thanks Wayne

Hi, FMP 5.5, OS 9.2.2, HP Laserwriter 4500 and 4050C (color), lots of RAM About a year ago I made some EPS files of some of our business forms (from pdf files) and put them in a database so that we could merge data and print out the forms. So far, so good. A year later it is time to update the forms and lots of problems. 1) After making and testing the EPS files with preview, I Insert/Picture onto the layout, I scale to make sure there is about 1/2" margin all around it and then printer setup, preview and print. 2) Usually, it will give a Postscript error "relating to the show command" The EPS files will print just fine if I drag and drop them…

Why can I not set my body to slide? All my fields will slide together like they should, but when I print I still get two extra blank pages. I went through the user manual, and it says I can slide any object or part, but when I select the 'body' part, I cannot access the sliding/printing options. On one of my forms I'm using sliding/printing to reduce the size of the enclosed part, but I don't want it to disappear completely if there is nothing filled in. I'd still like a box there, otherwise the printout looks very odd. I tried putting the same field behind the one that encloses the unused part, but it doesn't show up when I print. Any ideas?

Hi We have a database that has calculations that go back to prehistoric times. In the interim , before we build a new database, we need to use our existing one. We have 15 minute waits per page and they are printing checks for customers. Can that job be split up somehow. The file is on a network. Can it speed things to have several people doing things on it at once. I am sure the printer can handle it but not the file. Any suggestion would be most helpful Thanks STAn

Has anyone come across this before? If you want to print a layout with a large (50+rows) portal it will inevitably be split across multiple pages. Is there any way of forcing FileMaker to put page breaks between the rows of the portal so the rows are not "chopped" with half on one page and half on the next? Thanks Alex

I have a layout that collects data and another layout that prints the collected data. You amy ask why but this is the way it was received. In any case, the print layout is displaying merge fields instead of data entry type fields. This is just fine except for the merge fields that contain money data or number data fields that I want displayed. I've taken over as office manager and modified a very complex filemaker database, and after changing a few buttons to point to the correct layouts only one of three of my invoices prints out WAY to large! i'd guess 30% bigger! it all fits on the first page (including the footer) but i print out a second blank page (the second page prints out header and footer but no body- all the body is on the first page). SO: what did i modify by placing a button on a layout that would cause only one invoice to print out larger than the others (and spill out onto a page 2)? How can I check the page layout and fix it so its like the others? sorry for being such a noob! T…

Hi all I have a database with both a title header and a header part when i have a record that requires a two page or more printout things work fine,but if the record is only a single page the printer wil print out the second page with only the header and footer on and a blank body. Is there any way in which i can automate the printingso that it will not print the second blank page if there is no information to go in the body . many thanks

In our product database we are using a sliding field to accomodate the descriptions. When we go to print everything looks fine, even in print preview. When it prints the last line of text on SOME items are cut in half, almost like the field is not big enough. It does not happen on every entry, but it happens on multiple printers and when creating a PDF. I have tried changing the default field size, changing font, leaving more space between this field and the next and nothing is working. If anyone can provide any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate it.

I have three database files - Subjects Main, Subjects UF, and Subjects BT. Their purpose is for a database of subject headings for books, where Main has unique headings. UF (Used For) contains subject headings that are obsolete - there can be zero or more of these. BT (Broader Term) contains a heading that is more general than the Main one - there can be zero or more of these as well. There is a 1:M relationship between Main and UF, as well as Main and BT, Main being the parent is both cases. Why would "preview a layout" be much slower than a "browse a layout"? (seems at least 5 times, particularly for small number of records 2 to 10 even) This is a general question. Most of the fields displayed are unstored calculations. Thanks

Hi all I am trying to get fields to slide up in a columnar list layout. I have a field called comment that is a single text field that i have enlarge to accomodate five rows. Sometimes all five rows are filled with data and other times there is only one line. I have check the right side of the sliding box "Only directly above" and "also reduce the size of the enclosing part" and i have also tried sliding with "Only directly above" checked but it does not slide up. It is possible to slide this configuration up The field is formatted as a text field. Thanks in advance Lionel

I am trying to print a page of two columns containing 10 records per page. Each record has 15 fields, one below the other in this layout. Sometimes some of the lower fields are blank. I think I've tried everything to eliminate the space between records using the sliding option. I've even created a blank non-printing field below all the printing fields as the field to slide up from. No dice; I still have big holes in my printouts. So, rather than have people fill out the same old form, I want to print the FileMaker layout for each family and ask a family member to correct anything that's wrong. So, that means printing the layout for each of about 2000 families. We decided to start with the first 100... did print... said to print pages 1 to 100... it started spooling them, but as it went, it got slower and slower and slower. And then when it started printing to the printer, there's a notable delay between each page... not the normally swift printing that you'd see printing a 100 page document from Word on that printer. I have a document in FM5.5 that I am trying to print. The header information (logo, company address, etc...) will print correctly (in terms of formatting) if it is placed in a Header part. The trouble is, the rest of the document, body, does not get printed. If I make the document just 1 part (body) and put the header information at the top of the body, then it is not correctly formatted and the logo does not appear. Please help! Argh! Have a simple script, allow abort off go to layout page setup enter preview mode (pause) show message if 1 enter browse mode go to layout if 2 print go to layout Problem is it goes to the first record every time. I take out the preview mode and message choice to test and goes to the correct record. I check my reports page which has about a dozen reports that do similar stuff and they all work fine. Everytime I put in the preview again it goes to the first record again. When I return it takes me back to the correct record. I've never encountered this before and it's driving me loco! ricardito

hi my solution was working fine in os 9, but when i switched it over to os 10.3, it no longer prints to my device as 4 color process, e.g. if the color is defined as 100% magenta, it is printing as 38% cyan, 61% magenta. this is filemaker pro 5.5v2. also an embedded vector eps graphic is now printing in low res. i've tried using the same printer ppd that i was using in os 9, as well as downloading the newest one from the manufacturer. (creo/scitex brisque)-a postscript rip. any insight or help would be appreciated...i keep thinking i'm missing something obvious, but i'm running out of ideas. thanks, mike robertson

Alright. I am learning a lot in this forum. It is hard to find books in this town on Filemaker. Here is my question. I have a database that teachers input the students name along with their information. The teacher also can choose from more than one checkbox depending on the infraction. I want to be able to print the information in a nice form so the student as well as myself can sign it. I know I will probably have to use calculations in the fields. I am having a problem printing PDF's inserted in container fields, either through "insert picture" or "insert QuickTime" (for multi-page documents). It doesn't matter whether I insert the PDF or a reference to it, the screen view and the printout are both at very low resolution and totally unusable. I have updated to 6.0.4 but that did not solve the problem. The documents I am inserting are scanned, so could be saved in another format if necessary. I am using a Mac G5DP with 1.5GB running 10.3.1. Any suggestions?

My reports are always fine in preview mode and then invariably have hiccups when printed. My boss just slammed some papers in my face and said she was sick of it. I have tried new drivers (HP Color LaserJet 4550N) but that does not seem to have solved the problem. I have switched all the layout fields to merge fields, also did not fix the problem. Things that are set to slide leave bigger than expected gaps in between lines and some lines just print half way. In a 50 page report, this may happen in only one or two records. I hope this answer is posted somewhere and i just haven't found it.... I am trying to print a report of several different layouts combined into one layout... there are many different fields and I have them all "sliding/printing" up so there isn't any "dead" space when output. All the fields are in the "body" section of the layout. The problem I encounter is that at least one of the fields gets "cut-off/sliced" and the rest of the field starts at the top of the next page. Is there a way to eliminate the cutting of a field? We are creating a game which requires stacks of pick-up cards (like, for example, the Chance cards in "Monopoly"). Each card has a background colour allocated to a Container field, and 4x logo Containers in the 4 corners. These are looked up from five related files. Each card also has a main text field, and a text title which is repeated upside-down at the bottom. Preview Mode shows perfect results, but when printing or saving to PDF the first card (or, on some pages, the first three or so) of each page is the only one printed in full. I have a printing script that I wrote that only works part of the time. Basically, whenever I open the file and print one of the records, it prints fine. If i hit print again on that record or any other record it only prints the FIRST record. If i quit out of the program and go back in, then it will do the same thing (print correctly and then not print correctly). I am using OSX.2 and FM6. I have two or more layouts that I'm planning to combine into one report. Does anybody know if there's a way to set the page numbers so that, say, layout 2 starts printing a page "7" (even though it's the first page of layout 2) and layout 3, say, starts at "12"? These numbers will of course change, depending on the length of each report. In Microsoft Word you can start numbering at any number, but I don't think there's the same feature with FMP. (You can restart at 1, but that's not of much use to me.) Has anybody come across what may be a bug, a problem with reports not appearing properly, when I set up a grouped and sorted report everything is fine it prints and all is as it should be,then I close the file and reopen it and none of the grouping is retained I just end up with a list in the body.
